Refractory gold concentrates often contain sub-microscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulphide minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically, by oxidative processes such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pre-treatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulphides to elemental sulphur, sulphur dioxide gas or sulphate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as down stream operating costs. Iron sulphide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulphuric acid solution that is generated from oxidation of the sulphides. This liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulphide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulphate, but this is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulphate, which then hydrolyzes and re-precipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200OC) the formation of hematite is favoured. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200OC), the formation of basic iron sulphate is favoured. If the ore or the leach solution contain significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favoured. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulphate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulphates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulphate; the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant, and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

Kittilä Mine is a gold mine located in Northern Finland, owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Finland. The mining operation started in 2008 with open pits which were completed in 2012 and production moved to being entirely underground. The mine consists of four separate orebodies, currently producing 2.0 Mt per annum, and requiring over 19 km of development on a yearly basis. The principal mining method is long hole stoping with delayed backfill. Microseismic monitoring was initially tested in the Suuri orebody, in the mining block between the 625 and 500 Levels. A small monitoring system was installed in 2018, after observations of stress-induced damage to the rock mass and in anticipation of future mining at greater depth. The initial goals were to evaluate if useful data could be recorded and test the signal quality of different sensor types. Prior to 2018, ground control related challenges in the Suuri and Roura mining blocks had been mostly related to sill pillar mining and block movements between weak graphitic schist planes. Seismic monitoring in the Suuri deposit proved successful for following the rock mass response to mining and helped support the rationale for early monitoring in the new, deeper mining block in Rimpi at 900 m depth. Preliminary geotechnical characterization and testing of the rock mass showed areas of silicification in the footwall rocks with potentially continuous structural features. Seismic monitoring of the Rimpi area has confirmed the brittle behavior of the rock mass, with strong seismic responses induced by stress changes following blasting being recorded. In addition to this expected behavior, a large magnitude event associated with significant damage in the footwall drive development 90 m above the stoping was experienced. Initial investigation of the rockburst showed two separate damage locations with over 300 tons of displaced rock. The seismic monitoring system recorded this rockburst as a single seismic event with magnitude significantly larger than previously recorded. Additional analyses indicated a possible thrust fault event, triggering two separate strainbursts. Following this event, the ground support system was upgraded in parts of the footwall drives to improve dynamic capacity. Coal/pyrite fines were froth floated in a laboratory cell to examine the rate of pyrite recovery during conventional coal flotation. The effects of collector, particle size and carbon to total sulfur ratio on the kinetics of recovery were investigated. These data coupled with microscopic examination suggest that miniscule amounts of coal that remain attached to the pyrite surface affect the rate of flotation of pyrite.

"The US coal mining industry has suffered a recent decline in profits caused by a combination of decline in commodity demand and more restrictive government regulation, forcing coal mining companies to cease production in numerous mines. A 40% decrease in the total number of coal mines occurred from 1994 to 2000. The number of mines remained relatively constant until 2008 when a change of government sparked a series of new environmental regulations which have contributed to another 15% decrease from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, production has only decreased by 3%, increasing from 1994 to 2008, and then decreasing since 2008. However, this value is skewed by large increases in sub-bituminous coal production and decreases in other coal ranks. Several aspects assist in executive decisions on mine longevity and economic worth. Studies of open source mine data collected by mandated government surveys coupled with commodity history can be used to find relationships between mine closures and these elements, which include statistics on production tonnage, seam height, coal rank, etc. This paper looks at coal mining trends since 1994 by comparing mine, market, and regulation factors that may influence mine closure. INTRODUCTION The US coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history, and regulatory impact. TRENDS SINCE 1994 Each year, US coal mines are required to submit data on a wide variety of categories to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data includes administrative records, production values, and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the following figures."

Since the discovery of high temperature superconductors has led to extensive interest and conjecture regarding their potential to change contemporary technology, discussions of the impact on the metallurgical and other industries have naturally arisen. In this paper we present data showing the possible impact of these developments on the materials related to the fabrication and proliferation of devices based on superconductor materials. We observe that the largest volume of effort with LTSC will be for the demonstration of high power devices while applied research relating to processing will remain the principal HTSC activity. We also note that in the next decade copper consumption in the US is expected to remain essentially at the current level while the need for Nb and Sn,; two major components of LTSC, will grow at a faster rate both in the US and the world. Although the use of superconductor-based magnetic separation is anticipated to increase, no major impact of these components on the metallurgical industries is expected.

The deterioration rate of any metal or alloy is increased in a erosion-corrosion application because the passivated surface layer is removed by the solid particles contained in the pumping fluid and the material surface becomes corrosion active again. Numerous attempts were made to engineer a stainless steel with higher hardness and unaffected corrosion performance. Alloys of special interest in such an area are the duplex stainless steels particularly the CD4MCu material which has the capability of being hardened due to its ferrite-austenite microstructure. Unfortunately, the CD4MCu with higher hardness comprises different intermetallic compounds which will increase the corrosion rate. The paper is analyzing the erosion-corrosion performance of a new type CD4MCu with 32% higher hardness and superior wear performance. The corrosion performance of this new alloy is better than the corrosion performance of the common CD4MCu material which the industry could supply. The corrosion effectiveness was evaluated with the Huey test, the potentio-dynamic anodic polarization test and the weight loss test whereas the erosion resistance was established with a low stress ball-on-disk type apparatus. The Wilfley hard CD4MCu material had 39% lower weight loss and 32% smaller volume loss than the common CD4MCu alloy The hardness range of the centrifugal pump parts poured and processed with the Wilfley hard CD4MCu is 320-350 HBN versus 250-255 HBN hardness of the common CD4MCu. After approximately 18 months of experimentation and field testing it was clearly established that the life time of the Wilfley hard CD4MCu is higher than the common CD4MCu and consequently centrifugal pumps were supplied to different customers in North and South America. We have seen an explosive increase in the demand for large stripping equipment. It is appropriate that we review this equipment and determine what can be done to improve productivity. While we have used coal mining as an example in the study, much of the discussion will apply equally to other forms of stripping.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines studied the suitability of using flexible tendon cable supports as secondary roof supports at a western coal mine. The supports were installed in longwall tailgate entries and grouted into the mine roof. This paper quantifies how the use of cable supports can improve ventilation in underground airways. A mine ventilation simulator was used to model the changes in airway resistance and airflow and show potential for further ventilation improvements when cable supports are used. Model results indicated that cable support use translated to savings in air pressure around the longwall panel and increased airflow at the longwall face.

So take a few minutes to read the rest of this, and I’ll do my best to dispel a few mythWhat is a joint venture?In some form or fashion, joint ventures are as old as industry itself. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. In the United States’ underground construction industry, joint venture names such as, Healy-Greenfield, Green and Winston, Gates & Fox and Walsh, Shea-Ball, Kenny-Paschen and S&M-Traylor bring back memories of successful joint ventures that operated over many projects.There are nearly as many definitions for joint ventures (JVs) as there are attorneys. A short and simple definition is, "an association of two or more companies engaged in a singular, for-profit business enterprise without actual partnership or incorporation." That’s it. Two or more contractors decide to partner up for one or more projects. One benefit of the JV relationship is that the partners typically do not need to file incorporation documents, or articles of organization within the state where they intend to operate. So it is a relatively easy business arrangement to pull together. In the screening process, used to prepare particles for many applications, shape is known to have a significant effect. The degree of flakiness of construction aggregates has been considered particularly important. The objective of this research was to find values of operating parameters that optimize the separation of flaky from non-flaky particles by slotted screens. Thus an investigation was conducted to experimentally determine the influence of the particle size and thickness on the screening process. The Response surface method was employed for modelling and analysis of the data. Experiments employing a central composite design were performed on a pilot-scale, rectangular-aperture, vibrating screen to examine the effects of the screening variables the mass recovery of flaky and non-flaky particles to the oversize product. The SAS statistics package was used to fit a second-order model to each response and to analyze the fitted surface to determine the optimum levels. The optimization associated with a dual response system was then considered. The results of this study should provide a basis for optimizing screening conditions to obtain maximum recovery of non-flaky particles to the screen oversize while minimizing the recovery of flaky particles, which should be of interest to the aggregate industries.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon &apos;Yankee Ingenuity,&apos; innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

Blasting practices based on sound engineering principles are well established but the successful application of these practices requires accurate information about the overburden geology and close supervision of the drilling and blasting operations. Good design alone is not sufficient to insure good results, but the process may be difficult to control unless steps are taken to measure the variables and to provide management and the operators with the information they need to establish and maintain control. Satisfactory blasting can be defined as loosening and fragmenting the rock so that it can be handled by the excavating equipment, while at the same time, governmental regulations on air blast and ground vibrations are not violated. Optimum practices achieve these objectives at the lowest combined cost of the drilling and loading operations and the blasting materials. Total system optimization, that is, taking into consideration the effect of fragmentation on the cost of operating and maintaining excavating equipment as well as drilling and blasting costs, probably is not a reasonable goal at the present time.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines investigated solvent extraction methods for recovering gallium from filtrates produced from sulfuric acid leaching of hydrometallurgical zinc residues. These filtrates typically had pH values of 0 to 0.5, too high an acid content for effective gallium recovery by traditional extractants. Of the nine extractants studied in batch tests, 0.3M octyl phenyl acid phosphate (OPAP) in a kerosene diluent was the most effective extractant for gallium recovery, extracting up to 99.9 pct of the gallium. This high extraction was possible when the iron in solution was maintained in the reduced ferrous state. Batch tests also showed that a 1.5M-H2SO4 strip liquor recovered 98 pct of the gallium from the loaded OPAP. A continuous solvent extraction system was designed and operated based on McCabe-Thiele analyses of equilibrium loading and stripping isotherms. When 12 L of leach filtrate containing 0.32 giL Ga and 20 giL Fe were pumped through the system in 32 hr, results showed that 95 pct of the gallium was extracted in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:1. Stripping the loaded solvent with a 1.5M-H2S04 liquor recovered 94 pct of the gallium in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:4. A two-stage, 50-pct-phosphoric acid strip successfully removed ferric iron from the OPAP, allowing high gallium extractions to be maintained.

Twenty-five years ago, when I began my sales life marketing minerals, there was little or no contact between sales people and production people. In those days, it was not uncommon for me, as a salesman, to learn of production problems existing in my company from my customers. Today, in my opinion, any successful mining company must keep production people fully aware of circumstances that effect service to the users of the product. Basically, feldspar is presently consumed by the glass and pottery industries the same as 100 years ago. The consuming public little realizes the origin of so many things they use daily and take for granted. Feldspar is utilized in the glass that contains our Coca-Cola, Pepsi, wines, liqueurs, beer and the assorted gob¬lets from which we drink these lovely brews, the industrial glass upon which all industry depends, the bathroom plumbing fixtures that make life so different from the days of the out-house, the beautiful and durable china we enjoy at mealtime. The electricity we use requires insulators that demand feldspar. In our home ap¬pliances, automobiles, toys and airplanes, we find feldspar. I could go on and on, hopefully soliciting your help in making our taxpaying and non-taxpaying fellow man aware of the burdens he may acquire when unthinking, over-enthusiastic environmentalists foist unnecessary hardships upon the mining industry. Feldspar is marketed primarily sized from 20 mesh to 325 mesh. The glass industry requires feldspar ground 20 mesh to 40 mesh size; the pottery industry requires material from 150 mesh to 325 mesh size. One large glass plant may require up to 100 tons per day and more, whereas a small plant may use less than 5 tons per year. As part of other work related to the studies of kinetic factors that influence the flotation of specific sulphide minerals, specially designed kinetic flotation experiments at Cominco included work done on -65 + 100 mesh and -100 + 150 mesh, high purity galena. The flotation collector used was sodium isopropyl xanthate containing radioactive sulphur-35. Radiation monitoring of the galena fractions from stage flotation tests indicated that the adsorbed radioactive xanthate was uniformly distributed among the floated fractions and the non-floated, or residual portion of the galena. This anomalous behaviour could not be correlated to changes in Seebeck coefficients, to lattice distortions, or to the nature of the mineral surface as revealed by infrared spectroscopy and by microscopic measurements.

The MBS Solvent Extraction System utilises a unique design of mixer- settler having very high capacity per unit area and great flexibility. The development of the mixer-settler is traced through its various stages wherein the independence of mixing and pumping, reduction in settler area requirements and simplicity of plant layout were achieved. The laboratory, pilot plant and full scale tests contributing to the development of the machine are described. The business of mineral exploration and development has become much more than simply a problem of locating orebodies and designing mines. Favorable economic analysis of mining and processing feasibility is no longer sufficient to justify the development of a mine. New laws, enacted by virtually every level of government, require comprehensive land use planning, environmental analysis, mineland reclamation, mine safety studies, and many other considerations. This profusion of new laws says in effect, that the mining company is no longer responsible only to its stockholders. Mineral development today can be compared to a partnership. As in all partnerships, the risks and liabilities as well as the benefits are held jointly by all the participants. In addition to the mining operator, this partnership consists of the public, through its many levels of government, interest groups, and individual citizens. Therefore, you&apos;d better know your partner very well - his responsibilities and capabilities. Mining is considered a high risk venture. The risk on the part of the operator and the lending institutions has long been recognized. The risk that the public and its government take in these mining ventures has now been recognized also. The people and their government have learned that they inherit, through abandonment or forfeiture, the mistakes and problems of individuals and companies regarding these natural resources. In looking through the "Mining Engineering Handbook" recently published by the Society of Mining Engineers, I noted that in their discussion of liability for excavations, the authors quoted from the book of Exodus, 20th chap., where Moses said to his people: "When a man leaves a pit open, or when a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or an ass falls into it, the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to its owner, and the dead beast

The Caribou sulfide deposit near Bathurst, New Brunswick (Figure 1) is illustrative of one variety of strata-bound sulfide deposits. It consists of numerous near-vertical sulfide lenses which are concordant to the foliation and lithologic layering of low-grade metamorphic host rocks. Pyrite is the chief mineral in these lenses, but appreciable quantities of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena are also present. Rocks in the Caribou mine area belong to the Tetagouche Group of Ordovician age. They consist chiefly of (1) quartz-sericite and quartz- sericite- feldspar schists, (2) greenschists, and (3) slate and phyllite. The trends of these steeply dipping rocks define the trace of a tight, steeply plunging fold structure, the Caribou fold (Figure 2). This fold plunges approximately 750 to the north-northwest; its axial plane strikes N.20°E. and dips steeply westward. Sulfide lenses of the Caribou deposit are associated spatially with the Caribou fold. The deposit is located in the fold along the contact between quartz-sericite and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists on the hanging wall and quartz-chlorite-sericite phyllites and graphitic schist on the footwall (Figure 3). Genesis of the Caribou deposit is ambiguous because its strata-bound form suggests syngenetic sulfide deposition, whereas its location within a fold suggests structurally controlled epigenetic mineralization. Acceptability of a particular genetic model rests on establishing the time of mineralization relative to deposition, deformation, and metamorphism of the associated rocks. To establish the timing for Caribou mineralization, the deformational histories of rock and sulfide, respectively, were compared. Epigenetic and syngenetic models can be tested against this interpreted structural history of the Caribou deposit.
