Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world's aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world's commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted's discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville's method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer's work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today's aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:' building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth's crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. "In China, most reserves of rich iron ores have now been depleted and sustainable development of low-grade iron ores has become a critical discussion topic in the mining industry today. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of beneficiating a low-grade, hematite-magnetite ore (assaying 18.64% Fe) for subsequent utilization. In this study, process mineralogy and beneficiation of the ore were carried out in the laboratory. First, mineralogical investigation shows that the main metal minerals are hematite, magnetite and a little octahedrite that cannot be used at present, and the main gangue minerals include albite, quartz and ankerite. Based on the above, a combined process of magnetic separation and gravity concentration has been developed by using laboratory low- and high- intensity magnetic separators and a slimes shaking table, respectively. Factors affecting these separation methods are discussed, including process mineralogy on the tailings of the high-intensity separator, where the iron minerals were found to be finely disseminated in the gangue as inclusions. By applying a two-stage grinding step and a magnetic separation stage together with gravity concentration, a marketable iron concentrate assaying 60.79% Fe at a recovery of 60.23% can be obtained, when the feed assays 18.75%Fe, which provides some useful information for the sustainable use of low-grade iron ore.IntroductionIron is the world’s most commonly used metal. Steel, of which iron ore is the key ingredient, represents almost 95% of all metal used per year, primarily in structural engineering applications and for maritime purposes, automobiles and general industrial applications. By the end of 2009, the iron and steel production in China ranked the first in the world, and reached 0.567 and 0.537 billion tons, respectively. The domestic supply of iron ore was 0.88 billion tons and about 0.628 billion tons of iron ore were imported in 2009."

"INTRODUCTION An inherent aspect of any tunnelling project is ground risk: how it is identified, quantified and managed throughout the various stages of a project. Early identification of these risks, such as adverse ground conditions or potential obstructions is crucial; however specific identification of all risks will inevitably be limited by the extent of the desk study, ground investigation and accuracy of as-built information available, particularly in a densely populated urban environment such as London with a long and varied history of development. It is therefore crucial to have suitable plans and procedures in place for dealing with potential ground risk scenarios if they occur during construction work to ensure the safety of the workforce and to protect nearby critical assets. A number of experiences of potential ground risk were encountered during the Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) works on Crossrail contract C300/410 which was constructed by a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK). The C300/410 works, undertaken in the heart of London, comprised of over 2.5km of SCL tunnels for Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road Stations and the Fisher Street crossover, as well as two 6.2km TBM tunnel drives between Royal Oak and Farringdon. BFK appointed Donaldson Associates as their SCL designers for the works; together they were responsible for excavation stability up to the point of ring closure. Despite the majority of SCL tunnelling works at Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road being through the favourable medium of London clay, there remained areas of local geotechnical challenges. Some of these were expected from the outset, some became apparent as works progressed from records of other nearby excavation works, and some were only encountered during tunnel excavation. Being located in the centre of London meant that there always remained a possibility of meeting some form of obstruction from previous structures. However, identification of all potential issues prior to the commencement of the works was challenging and proved to not be entirely possible. Through a series of case studies, this paper documents incidents where obstructions or adverse ground conditions arose. These scenarios all had the potential to cause safety risks, impact the tunnel design and/or construction methods and ultimately add time and cost to the works. The paper discusses how these challenges were overcome which utilised in part, a progressive risk reduction cycle, feeding back knowledge gained at all stages of construction into the approach for undertaking the works. It also examines what could be done in future to further reduce the ground risk through early identification, communication, education and appropriate contingency measures."

"Repairing and replacing the nation’s aging and crumbling infrastructure has become a major issue with the American public. It is no secret that the upkeep of roads, tunnels, bridges, and water and waste water facilities has been neglected for decades. Cities, states and towns across the United States are now grappling with these issues, ones that will take decades and billions of dollars to fix.Because of this infrastructure issue, the North American tunneling industry is flourishing. Cities across the country are looking to go underground to alleviate traffic issues, transporting water and waste water to more people in more efficient ways.In October, the seventh annual Cutting Edge conference was held in Atlanta, GA. Put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Britain’s Tunnelling Journal, about 175 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world attended. Attendees included owners, designers and contractors. An accompanying exhibit included 28 companies.The theme of the two-day conference was Advances in Tunneling Technology. Speakers examined the latest advances in tunneling technology, its methodology and how these advances can be harnessed to assist upcoming major tunneling projects. The conference featured a tailored, high-end, single-track program of subject-specific presentations that focused on innovation and practical experience. Two in-depth panel discussions at the end of each day were also included.Patricia Mulroy was a keynote speaker on Monday. She is senior fellow for climate adaptation and environmental policy at The Brookings Institution. Like many others, Mulroy believes the U.S. infrastructure in in a state of disrepair. But, she said, no one wants to talk about it. “We need to have a conversation about infrastructure. We cannot be afraid to talk about building it and the cost.” For this to happen, though, the nation needs leadership."

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23 percent of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with L/D ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests a radial prestress of 3,000 psi or 5,000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3,000 psi prestress, was 54.3 percent for limestone, 40.3 percent for marble, 44.7 percent for sandstone, and 23.4 percent for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5,000 psi prestress, was 74.2 percent for limestone, 51.2 percent for marble, 61.6 percent for sandstone, and 29.7 percent for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room and pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent.

Seismic geophysical methods have long been used by geologists and geophysicists to delineate subsurface features. These techniques work because different types and strengths of soil and rock transmit energy at different velocities. The Crosshole-Downhole tests (CH-DH) and seismic refraction survey (RS) are among the most used methods in engineering applications to obtain the elastic properties of subsurface layers. As a result, seismic methods have evolved into a cost-effective tool for rapidly determining depth to bedrock in engineering and construction projects. The seismic methods are best suited to sediment thickness analysis, bedrock quality determination and detection of the presence of weaknesses in the bedrock before the erection of any civil engineering structures such as bridges, tunnels, dams and portals. Seismic methods are also useful in estimating the rippability of bedrock ahead of construction. These methods are particularly useful for large-scale projects that require a significant number of drill holes, resulting in a substantial investment of time and costs for drilling. The CH-DH and RS methods are typically comparable in total cost to drilling, but provide significantly more information in 2-D and 3-D and therefore reduce the likelihood of conceptually oversimplifying the subsurface conditions. The above mentioned methodologies were considered to be the most appropriate geophysical methods for investigating the shallow structure and the dynamic soil properties of the area where the Ilarionas Dam is scheduled to be constructed. The main target of this work was to prove the potential of geophysical methods in providing accurate information to the civil engineer and to obtain information on the dynamic soil and rock properties for earthquake design analyses for the dam construction. Specifically, nine refraction seismic profiles and three cross-hole-downhole seismic tests were implemented to determine the subsurface conditions of the study area. The tests determined the shear and compression wave velocity profiles versus depth and other crucial parameters such as Young and Rigidity modules. Furthermore, they allowed the detailed 2-D mapping (along several profiles of the study area) of the subsurface variation of the soil and rock dynamic moduli.

Spatial variance of rock properties is an important characteristic of rock which addresses the heterogeneity of mechanical and physical properties and their effect on underground mining. Assessing spatial variance can be useful for both locating potential difficult grounds and performing reliability analysis in the mining support system. This study shows a microscale numerical model for rock material based on continuum mechanics. To consider the spatial correlation factor of mechanical properties in realistic rock mass, this study introduces a spatial correlation concept into the traditional type III extreme value distribution model. Based on the improved microscale random model, we conducted a series of numerical uniaxial compressive tests and one longwall mine model to investigate the progressive failure of rock. The results show that spatial correlation factor can significantly affect the load-deformation curves and fracture patterns. The spatial variance model was applied to a longwall mine that included several cutting sequences to observe the influence of the spatial variance on roof behavior. The cohesion and friction random fields induced failure that propagated randomly through the immediate roof in different entries. The results showed that the spatial variance provides an accurate prediction of erratic roof falls in coal mines.

"Preventing machine-related injuries is one of the major safety concerns in underground coal mines. Severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck, crushed, or pinned by mining equipment such as a continuous mining machine (CMM), shuttle car, or a scoop. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been applied in mining to reduce these types of injuries and fatalities. All of the PDSs that are currently approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in underground coal mines are magnetic-field based and could be affected by metallic objects such as trailing cables. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of trailing cables on the performance of PDSs. In particular, the magnetic field coupled from proximity system generators to a de-energized trailing cable were characterized. The results show that significant energy can be coupled from the proximity system generators to a trailing cable when there is a closed loop in the cable. The effect on PDS performance from the magnetic field radiated around an energized trailing cable was also quantified for different current amplitudes in the cable. It is shown that the magnetic field caused by the electric current in the trailing cable mainly consists of a 60-Hz signal and its harmonics which cause little interference to the PDS. The results presented in this paper can help PDS manufacturers to design better systems that are more immune to these effects. INTRODUCTION An average of 250 injuries occur every year during operation of Continuous mining machines (CMMs), and 43 miners have been killed by striking or pinning accidents involving CMMs in the U.S. from 1984 to 2015 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). In addition, there have been 10 fatal accidents involving mobile haulage equipped with trailing cables from 2000 to 2015 (Noll et al., 2017). In response to these fatalities and injuries the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a regulation in 2015 requiring the use of a proximity detection system (PDS) on all CMMs except full-face machines and proposed a regulation in 2016 which would require a PDS on other mobile underground equipment. Current PDSs approved for underground use are magnetic-field based. The PDS contains machine-mounted magnetic field generators that create fields around the machine. The other part of the PDS is a miner-wearable component (MWC) that reads the flux density of the generators. These systems use the magnetic field strength readings from the MWC to determine whether a miner is at a safe distance from the machine. A stable magnetic field is essential for the accuracy of the system."

And a new generation of safety culture experts are telling mining companies how to use it: It is a situation that is still too common in the mining industry: the latest personal protective gear is in place. The safety rules are known and followed. And then, in a moment of inattention or carelessness, a mistake is made and someone gets hurt or killed. Common wisdom claims that such accidents are impossible to eliminate entirely. Mining is dangerous, and some miners will always be hurt and killed. An increasing number of mine safety experts, however, reject the common wisdom. A year with zero mining deaths is possible, they say; with the use of one of the newest weapons to the mining industry in the safety war: the concept of safety culture. Safety culture refers to the set of attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values that influence safety in the work environment. It is also sometimes called the way an organization behaves when no one is watching. Robert Peters, of the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), describes safety culture this way: ?It?s what?s believed on a day-to-day basis. For example, if a miner sees a workplace hazard and he truly believes that his boss wants him to identify the hazard and bring it to the company?s attention, that would be an example of a positive safety culture.?

During the past year the news media has come in for its share of criticism. Some of it, without doubt, is justified. Much of it, like that which has been leveled against some of the rest of us, is not. We can sympathize with the newspapers and magazines, the radio and television stations. Like the coal industry, which I represent, they are a part of the free enterprise system. They depend upon advertising for their existence, and advertisers patronize those media which reach the most people interested in their product. The various news media are therefore In avid competition for circulation. Although they do have an unquestioned influence on the public, they are primarily a reflection of the public and it is in this context that we will consider them. Granted that this reflection is sometimes a bit distorted, let us admit that any subject which does not strike a responsive chord In the public will soon be dropped by the media.

Minproc Resources Inc. is developing a tailings retreatment project in Bolivia at the Colquiri zinc-tin-silver mine, in the Bolivian Andes. Mining at Colquiri has been continuous since 1940 and COMIBOL, the Bolivian state mining company, has owned and operated the underground mine since 1964. There are 10 million tonnes of tailings at Colquiri containing 0.51% Sn, 4.21% Zn and 50 g/t Ag. Minproc plans to mine and concentrate the tailings at 1.15 million tonnes per year to produce feed for pyrometallurgical upgrading. The tailings are moderately complex, with cassiterite grain size ranging from 200 to 5 pm. The marmatite (ZnFeS) in the tailings is relatively easily recovered, with zinc recovery of 80% to a 40%-45% Zn concentrate. The major problem with the zinc metallurgy is that the marmatite is complexed with iron, which results in iron contents of 14%-17% Fe in concentrate. This makes the product very difficult to sell because of the low Zn:Fe ratio. Most zinc smelters require a Zn:Fe ratio of 6:1 or 7:1, whereas this concentrate has a 3:1 ratio. Concentrate sale terms are therefore unfavorable, and the high cost of transportation from Bolivia to the smelters is an additional burden.

Risk assessment is an essential component of mine feasibility studies. However, it is often challenging to identify the appropriate analysis and derive the required input data. The uniqueness of a mining project and the associated technical issues require customization of the risk assessment approach to meet both requirements and characteristics. The uncertainty driving the operating risk in mine feasibility studies and its assessment through Monte Carlo simulation as a component of a cash flow analysis are discussed in this paper. The paper introduces the use of the analytic hierarchy process for derivation of qualitative input and conducts quantification of the three main sources of operating performance delays, equipment, ground and schedule problems, in a cash flow simulation. A methodology for the assessment of operating risk in mine feasibility studies is presented.

Because the Environmental Protection Agency has identified methane as a greenhouse gas, the importance of de gasification through gob wells has become more critical. It has been observed that the degree of methane emission is closely related to the geomechanical characteristics of coal bearing strata, roof, floor, and surrounding coal seams. Monthly production data from 250 gob wells were collected from the Warrior Basin in Alabama, and many interesting correlations were observed between methane production with longwall face width, face advancement rate, number of gob wells in a panel, and geologic columns. Extensive finite element analyses were performed to estimate the characteristics of the emission zone in an attempt to corroborate these findings. This paper describes an investigation for developing correlations between the geomechanical behavior of the methane emission zone with methane production.

INTRODUCTION Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) south of Dallas, Texas, use to be the site of the Superconducting Super Collider. For those of you unfamiliar with the project, this was a multi-billion dollar project taken on by the U.S. Government for the further advancement of technology, medicine, and science. Major components of the project consisted of a Linear Accelerator known as the LINAC; three accelerating rings known as the Low Energy Boosters (LEB), Medium Energy Booster (MEB) and the High Energy Booster (HEB); the East and West Campuses where the Inner Reactor Halls would have been located; and the 87 km (54 mile) main collider tunnel. Unfortunately, this all came to an end on December 6, 1993, with the termination of the project due to the Government's cancellation of funds. This paper will deal with the two of the underground contracts before the termination. These two contracts were the 1122 contract which ran from N25 to N40 and the 1130 contract which ran from N40 to N55. (See figure 1) The 1122 contract was awarded to us in July of 1992 and consisted of the excavation and support of six (6) shaft varying in diameter from 5.5 m (18 feet) to 8 m (26 feet) and ranging from 39.6 m (130 feet) to 61 m (200 feet) deep and the driving of approximately 13,100 m (.43,000 If.) of main collider tunnel. Epigenetic ore deposits in Nevada and Utah occur in clusters or belts in a variety of tectonic settings. Many are concentrated in the western half of Nevada in a region containing numerous, relatively large intrusive bodies. Throughout Nevada and Utah, they tend to be clustered in elongate zones or belts. Some of these belts are well defined by the distribution of mineral deposits, patterns of igneous rocks, alinements of faults, and aeromagnetic anomalies, whereas others are equivocal. The Pioche belt in eastern Nevada and western Utah, the Eureka belt in central Nevada, and the Manhattan belt in western Nevada exemplify the general characteristics of these belts, the close relation of some belts to geologic structure, and the lack of a clear correspondence in other belts. Some of these belts are characterized by alined or en echelon faults that disrupt the north-trending Basin ranges, by belts of Cretaceous and Tertiary granitoid and porphyry intrusive rocks near which the ore deposits occur, and by alined magnetic anomalies generally related to the Cretaceous and Tertiary intrusive rocks. All the mineral belts have produced precious and base metals and tungsten; the Manhattan belt in addition has produced magnesite and brucite; and the Pioche belt, uranium, fluorspar, and alunite. The belts in Nevada and Utah may be related to a variety of factors, such as zones of structural weakness in Precambrian rocks, transverse zones of lateral faulting, localized areas of igneous activity, or a combination of these and other factors. Specific types of ore deposits in Nevada and Utah seem related compositionally to the intrusive bodies with which they are associated. Iron deposits, for example, are associated with mafic intrusive rocks such as diorite or gabbro, whereas copper deposits generally and tungsten deposits almost exclusively are associated with granitic intrusive rocks such as quartz monzonltc and granodiorite.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. The research has demonstrated that the ventilation of large-opening mines improves significantly by including ventilation requirements in the mine planning process and implementing some practical techniques during mining. Planning the location of long pillars to reduce the number of crosscuts between intake airways and return airways, positioning auxiliary fans in their proper locations, and establishing ventilation stoppings with minimal leakage all significantly improve the ventilation of large-opening mines. Mine operators that adopt these techniques in the mine ventilation plan will reduce mineworkers? exposure to airborne contaminants.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project (MPSO) is in Doha Qatar. This technical paper will discuss and explain the three major stages of geotechnical investigation employed. Stage one the tender geotechnical data and how this was used to design the TBM and identify various areas of risk. Stage two was the selection of supplementary geotechnical investigation methodologies. Stage three was the geotechnical investigation by specialist equipment installed on the TBM and providing further data on a real time basis as the TBM was advancing. Analysis of all the data will be provided along with the lessons learned.

The history and development of the FMC Coke process has been reported in numerous presentations over the past 10 years (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) but a short review is desirable, especially regarding the aspects that are influenced by the coal to be used. F'MC has been developing this process in pilot facilities since 1956 and in a modest sized plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming since 1960 (Figure I). This plant produces strong uniformly sized coke briquettes from a completely non-coking coal, namely Elkol, a sub-bituminous coal of the Adaville seam. Since operating commercially, over 300,000 tons have been produced, 90% of which has been used in electric phosphorus furnaces and some 10% of which went for trials in iron blast furnaces. We believe that this commercial use of non-coking coals is a unique experience in the history of coke manufacture.
