The abstract discusses the extraction of silica from nickel laterite ore using a hydrothermal process with sodium hydroxide. The effects of reaction temperature, time, and NaOH-to-ore ratio on silica extraction were investigated. The optimal conditions were determined, achieving over 98% silica extraction. The mechanism involves the reaction of Si in lizardite and quartz with sodium hydroxide, forming sodium silicate solution. Other metals like Mg, Fe, and Ni are enriched in the residue.

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

"Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential for numerous modern high tech applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts and defense applications. The destabilization of REE pricing owing to the global demand and supply deficit has forced many countries to re-evaluate the possibility of indigenous production of REEs. Cost effective and eco-friendly opportunities are being widely explored for extraction of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources such as coal and coal byproducts to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Central Alaska (Healy Coal Mine) and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet (Wishbone Hill) province have been found to possess elevated REE concentrations as compared to average world coal estimates. The objective of the study is to enrich the REEs in the fine size fraction (-75 Microns) from Healy and Wishbone Hill by froth flotation technique. A Box-Behnken design was applied for modeling and optimization of some operating variables on the flotation to maximize REE enrichment. The variables studies were frother dosage, pulp density (% Solids) and collector dosage. Experiments were carried out using a statistical design and the main and interaction effects on response variable was evaluated by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Based on the experimental results the optimum flotation conditions for maximum REE enrichment in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% Solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy coal sample and 10% Solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic equation for modelling and optimizing the response variable is found to be independent of collector dosage for both the coal samples. INTRODUCTION Alaskan coal deposits are distributed in three major coal provinces and are in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks. The climate, vegetation type and sedimentation process has attributed to low sulfur content (averaging 0.3 percent) in Alaskan coals compared to other coal deposits found across the globe. In Central Alaska-Nenana and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet coal province coal resources are contained in Tertiary rocks while bulk of the Coal resource in North Slope coal province is contained in Cretaceous and Tertiary coal bearing rocks [1]. Coals from Central Alaska- Nenana (Healy) and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet province (Wishbone Hill) have been found to possess elevated concentrations of critical REEs as compared to the amounts present in world coals (Figure 1). The Wishbone Hill deposit is considered a relatively small deposit, with about 14 million tons of identified reserves, compared to Healy which has over 500 million tons identified [2]. The REE concentrations up to 286 ppm and 524 ppm on ash basis have been reported by Gupta et al. in 2016 with elevated concentrations Ce, La, Y and Nd which are expressed to be of critical importance by US Department of Energy. Accordingly, the two coal samples possess the potential to be used as a REE resource in the near future under favorable socio-economic and geo-political scenarios. [3, 4]"

The present study highlights the planning and design aspects of a well-known openpit copper deposit in India. The mine has been operational since 1982 and presently reaches a depth of 168 m below the surface. The present planning effort has been given due consideration in view of the recent upsurge of copper prices in the global market. The prime focus of the study has been directed towards examining the possible extent of final pit beyond the current pit outline and generating an extraction sequence of future mining operations. To this end, an orebody model of the deposit has been developed and the optimized pit has been derived using L-G 3D algorithm. A sensitivity analysis has also been performed to scrutinize the possible effects of the changing economic scenarios on the ultimate pit configuration. It has been observed that with the current production rate, mine life can be extended another 40 years. With a five-year production plan, these materials can be extracted in eight push-back schemes. The extraction sequence of these push-backs has been outlined in this paper.

The Atlas Concentrator, reputedly the largest in the Far East today, is located on the island of Cebu in the Republic of the Philippines. It started operation on a 4000 TPD capacity in 1955. An expansion program, coupled with significant improvements both in the Crushing Plant and the Mil, made the Atlas Concentrator what it is today, treating about 14,000 tons of ore per day at a comparatively low cost of about $0.50 per ton treated. The Atlas Copper Mine is at present mainly an open pit operation, with ore supplied from two pits (Lutopan and Biga) north of the Concen¬trator. Development of an Underground Mine, situated on the main ore body at Lutopan, which will be a block caving operation, has been underway since 1963, and this underground mining operation is expected to b e in full production by the latter part of 1966.

Heavy metal ions exist in waste effluents including mining tailings, manufacturing discharges, and smelting and metal plating process wastes. Various methods are available to treat industrial effluents containing high levels of metal ions, but when confronted with wastewater that has low metal ion concentration below 500 mg/L, most techniques suffer from low removal or separation efficiency as well as high operating cost. ELM-based techniques can be used to solve these problems.

Introduction This text is intended to provide the operator and turnkey contractor with the basic data for sizing vibrating screens to be used in ore crushing plants. The basic capacities, modifying factors, etc.. used in the area requirement calculations were developed empirically and modified to their present values based upon years of practical applications. It must be pointed out that screening is much more of an art than an exact science; however. the information presented here should provide for reasonably accurate screen sizing when applied to many metallic ores. Porphyry-type copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) deposits typically occur in the Phanerozoic rocks and have been well-documented. During the past two decades, a number of porphyry-type Cu-Mo deposits that range in age from 1055 Ma to 2970 Ma have been identified in the Precambrian rocks of Australia, Canada, China, Finland, India. Namibia and Zambia. The Malanjkhand porphyry copper deposit M.P., India is estimated to contain 789 Mt (870 million st) averaging 0.83% copper (mill headgrade); 0.004% molybdenum; 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) gold; 6 g/t (0.175 oz/st) silver and a cap of 7.5 Mt (8.2 million st) of oxide ore averaging 0.8% copper. The economic potential of the expanded copper mining milling, smelting and refining complex is expected to yield cathode copper 118.6 kt (130,700 st); molybdic oxide 830 t (914 st); gold 1.9 t (61,732 oz); silver 46.6 t (1.5 million oz); sulfuric acid 240 kt (264,500 st), copper from leach dumps 11.5 kt (12,600 st); nickel 24 t (26,400 st); cobalt 84 t (92,600 st); bismuth 16 t (17.6 st); selenium 48 t (53 st), tellurium 4.8 t (5.3 st).

Exploration of the Big Island trona beds by Stauffer Chemical Company started early in 1959. During the intervening time, Stauffer Chemical Company of Wyoming has developed a Large trona mine in this southwestern Wyoming area and has increased the over-all production of soda ash from natural sources by nearly one-half million tons per year. The trona, which is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate mineral, lies some 800 feet into the sedimentary rocks of the Green River formation. Present production is approximately 850,000 tons per year being extracted by means of a room-and-pillar mining system. Conventional coal mining equipment is used with some modification to accommodate local conditions. The mined and crushed ore is hoisted to the surface and processed in an on-site refinery. Refined soda ash is shipped to widely separated locations in covered hopper railraod cars. Construction in progress at Stauffer's plant will double the present capacity.

It seems to be a matter of general understnading that title extraction or use of ground water may not be used as the basis of a depletion deduction under the United States Revenue Code And indeed, I have been unable to find any precedent upon which to base such a deduction. It is for this reason that the Shurbet case, which is the subject of my discussion and is now before the Court, may well become a precedent as authority for the allowance or disallowance of a depletion deduction for income purposes. It is well known that the law recognized that capital is consumed in the process of extracting minerals, oil and has, other natural deposits, and timber (underscoring supplied). This exhaustion, or depletion, is likened to the using up of raw materials in manufacturing. The law, therefore, provides a deduction for depletion which is intended as compensation for the exhaustion of assets consumed in the production of income through severance of minerals, oil and gas, other natural deposits, and timber.

The mining-induced failure of the coal seam floor is essential for water inrush. The mining disturbance to the floor, especially in the thick coal seam, is severe, and the water inrush risk is also higher than that in regular thick coal seam excavation. The superposition of many stresses, including in situ stress, mining-induced stress, and confined water pressure, must be considered in the prediction of the floor failure depth. This study adopted the elasticity analysis, FLAC3D numerical simulation, and on-site acoustic wave test comprehensively. The thick coal seam working face of the Zhong-Yu coal mine affected by confined water was selected as the engineering background to study the characteristics of the floor failure. Based on elastic foundation theory and the superposition principle, the mechanical model and the failure depth criterion of the floor were established, respectively. The distribution and evolution of mining-induced stress and the plastic zone in surrounding rock during the mining process are obtained by FLAC3D. In addition, the changes in the P-wave wave velocity in the floor before and after mining were compared and studied by the acoustic wave test method. The range of floor damage depth is determined on the basis of the above research.

Arch Mineral Corporation and Rocky Mountain Energy's Medicine Bow Mine in Wyoming presented an interesting challenge to the concept of mining a multiple-seam, dipping coal in the Hanna Basin. The 3362 and 2962 pits at MBCC were designed in a multiple seam coal consisting of 4 (and in some areas 5) bands of coal; these coal beds are all in the Ferris formation. The area was subject to some localized faulting and a major fault caused a physical restraint that we mined up against in our final cut. Using a 1570 dragline as the principal stripping machine, the concept of developing a bench for stripping the lower seams from the low-wall side of the pit was initiated. The results of this method of stripping were very satisfying for this pit through the completion of pit life and prompted us to use it in other areas at MBCC and at our other operations. Mining a dipping coal presents a small twist to conventional "flat" coal stripping. The spoil has a tendency to continually try to slide into the pit and the increased overburden on each cut as you mine down the dip creates spoil problems unless adequate design provisions are made prior to stripping.

In underground coal mining, the specification and control of belt and bunker capacities are complicated by (1) stochastic and intermittent conveyor loading, (2) a limited ability to reduce surge at the mine face, and (3) occasional overlapping of loading from two or more mine faces on the conveyors. Recently, because of longwall mining and other factors, the capacity requirements of most mine conveying systems have risen substantially; as a result, efficient capacity design and control have become important mine planning issues. This paper reviews these design issues and their associated modeling procedures. Design considerations and modeling difficulties are also examined.

Accurate prediction of truck productivity plays a pivotal role in improving the efficiency and profitability of openpit mining operations. This paper proposes a deep neural network (DNN) model to overcome the challenge of predicting truck productivity in openpit mines. The prediction model was built using eight variables and was optimized by considering different train-test split ratios, numbers of hidden layers and neurons, and activation functions. The proposed model’s performance was evaluated using various metrics and compared with other commonly used machine learning algorithms. The results showed that the proposed model outperformed traditional machine learning models by achieving higher prediction accuracy. Moreover, a single-variable sensitivity analysis showed that haul distance is the most influential variable for predicting truck productivity. This study marks a pioneering effort in employing DNN to predict truck productivity in openpit mining, signifying a notable advancement in the field.

We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

"Mine refuge shelters are designed to protect mine workers from hazardous environmental conditions after a mine disaster, but high temperature and humidity levels inside these shelters may pose a significant safety risk. Due to the safety risks associated with human testing, detailed thermal models of shelters and human occupants have been developed using TAITherm simulation software. These models are used to predict the temperature and humidity within the shelter resulting from metabolic heating, evaporation due to sweat and respiration, moisture and heat from the shelter’s carbon dioxide scrubbing system, and heat transfer within the shelter. A detailed human thermoregulation model simulates the sensible and latent heat generated by the shelter occupants, and predicts the occupant’s body core temperature and moisture lost due to sweating and respiration. This information is used to assess the safety of the shelter. This paper presents the technical details of the human thermal model, validation comparing the human model to human subject test data, and results of a mine shelter analysis. IntroductionPortable mine refuge chambers are used in U.S. coal mines to provide protection to mine workers from hazardous conditions following a traumatic event. Although these shelters are designed to supply clean air and sustenance for up to 96 hours, prolonged exposure to the mine shelter environment itself can pose a substantial risk to human safety. Heat generated by the shelter occupants combined with heat from the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system can raise the shelter interior temperatures and relative humidity to dangerous levels that can lead to heat stress in humans. Unfortunately, the thermal burden associated with mine shelter exposure is not well characterized due to potential hazards associated with underground human subject testing. In order to assess the thermal burden on people within a mine shelter environment, a detailed thermal model was created to accurately predict the temperatures and humidity levels within the shelter, and the impact of these environmental conditions on human occupants. The model consists of a mobile inflatable tent-type mine shelter with 23 humans, and includes the surrounding mine environment. The thermal simulations were performed using a validated commercial heat transfer prediction computer software. Additionally, a module of the software provided the capability to simultaneously model the thermophysiology of 23 unique humans contained within the mine shelter. The human thermal models accounted for the thermal interaction with the environment and provided a core temperature response prediction that can be used to evaluate survivability in heat stress situations (U.S. Army, 2003). The models can also be used to determine maximum occupancy in order to maintain safe temperature and humidity levels inside the shelter in specific mine environments, to optimize shelter size for maximum heat dissipation, or to simulate active cooling systems."

In addition to directly analyzing the surfaces of minerals using high vacuum instrumentation methods, some important surface properties of mineral fillers can be determined indirectly by using reactive chemical probe molecules. This technique enables the strength and the number of the surface reactive sites to evaluation and this type of information is useful in predicting interfacial behaviour of minerals. One method of classifying these surface sites is by using Lewis acid/base theory and this type of approach could enable one to predict the adsorption of functional groups in dispersants, thickeners, pigments, etc. Also the adhesion of polymer matrices to the filler surface may be improved.

"The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a series of models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with a mediumsized surface blasthole drill shroud with a dry dust collector system. Previously run experiments conducted in NIOSH’s full-scale drill shroud laboratory were used to validate the models. The setup values in the CFD models were calculated from experimental data obtained from the drill shroud laboratory and measurements of test material particle size. Subsequent simulation results were compared with the experimental data for several test scenarios, including 0.14 m3/s (300 cfm) and 0.24 m3/s (500 cfm) bailing airflow with 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 dust collector-tobailing airflow ratios. For the 2:1 and 3:1 ratios, the calculated dust concentrations from the CFD models were within the 95 percent confidence intervals of the experimental data. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, to calculate the model input and to validate the models based on the experimental data. Problem regions were identified and revealed by the study. The simulation results could be used for future development of dust control methods for a surface mine blasthole drill shroud. IntroductionIn surface mines, production drilling is an essential process in blasting to fracture the hard rock overburden for removal. During the process, considerable amounts of respirable dust are produced. Past sampling at the shroud area of blasthole drills had documented time-weighted-average respirable dust concentrations ranging from 8.68 to 95.15 mg/m3 (Organiscak and Page, 1995) and 1.04 to 52.30 mg/m3 (Listak and Reed, 2007). These high dust concentrations, which may contain silica, can lead to respirable dust overexposures for the miners working nearby. These overexposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is ultimately fatal.Two basic methods are used to control drilling dust: a wet suppression system or a dry collection system (Cecala et al., 2012). Dry drilling techniques using a dust collection system are preferred in rural mining locations where a constant water supply is not available, and in the case of rotary drilling where water is associated with accelerated bit wear due to bearing degradation and hydrogen embrittlement. In addition, dry drilling eliminates freezing-related issues with water in colder climates. Dry dust collectors are highly effective at removing dust, especially the finer material, as long as they are properly operated and maintained (Listak and Reed, 2007; Organiscak and Page, 2005)."

Introduction Agrico Mining Co.'s Florida mining division has three surface mines and employs nearly 700 workers. The division produces some 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of phosphate rock annually. It is a good business. And Agrico has made it better by making it safer through a new approach to mine safety. In one year, Agrico - the second largest phosphate mining company in the US - recorded a stretch of one million manhours without an accident. That same year, the direct cost of accidents dropped to $9137 from a previous five-year average of about $50,000. Together with Don Roe, division manager of safety and security, Division General Manager Don Morrow made 1981 a watershed year for safety at Agrico. Morrow called on consultants from Safety Management Services of Du Pont's Specialty Services division to strengthen a safety program that was already better than average. From the late 1970s and into 1981, lost-workday cases (LWCs) were costing Agrico an estimated average of $22,000 each. And they were occurring with alarming frequency. In 1977, the company recorded six LWCs at an incidence rate of 0.64. This was followed by a jump to nine cases in 1978. In 1979, both occurrences and the rate increased - 10 LWCs at a 1.19 rate. The number of LWCs decreased to seven in 1980, with a rate of 0.71. Agrico instituted a far-reaching safety program in 1981, which began to take full effect in 1982. LWCs dropped from five in 1981, to three in 1982. And the direct cost plummeted from $110,346 to $28,828. In 1983, the mines recorded only one LWC. Its $9137 cost represented a reduction of $101,209 since the Safety Management Services of Du Pont had been called in. Through early 1984, the LWC incidence rate at the facility's three mines, phosphate drying plant, and transportation department was down to 0.26. This is 84% lower than the 1982 mining industry average, making it the safety leader among all Agrico companies, including its chemical plants. New Approach Agrico had the basics of a safety program in place when the Du Pont consultants arrived. Characterizing the abrasiveness of soil/rock and the allowable wear of hard-facing products in various conditions is a critical factor in selection of the best material for certain applications related to drilling and excavation in mining and construction industries. The Soil Abrasion Index test machine at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) is one of the recently developed unique systems capable of testing soil/crushed rock abrasion under various conditions, such as dry, wet, and saturated settings. It is also capable of testing the performance of various types of hard-facing materials in a given geo-material. This paper studies the wear properties of different hard-facing materials in various crushed rocks from a surface mining operation in the iron range region of the USA. The hard-facing materials include regular and hardened steels and six different specialized hard facings, based on chromium carbide. The soil/rock include a standard sand and two rock samples from the surface mine. Fourteen abrasion tests were conducted, where the weight loss of each hard-facing material was measured over timespans up to 1 h of testing. The results show the distinct performance differences between the steels with 17 HRC and 43 HRC hardness and the hard-facing products for this application. The results show the possibility to evaluate the abrasiveness of different rocks at a mine or construction site and the performance of various hard facings in similar working conditions. This is a practical solution for selection of the cutting tool or reinforcement of bucket lips and truck beds for comparison of relative wear life between different wear-resistant materials.
