Middelburg mine is an opencast export mine operating in the Eastern Transvaal Coalfields of the Republic of South Africa (Figure 1). The mine was commissioned in 1983, to its original design capacity of 4.25 million sales tonnes which was subsequently raised to 5.5 million sales tonnes in 1989. This increase in export tonnage was brought about through an increase in the mines export allocation and the revision of management strategies. The maintenance of this increased tonnage with minimal additional capital has been achieved through improved operational efficiencies and the upgrading of planning operations through the purchase of an Enhanced Mine Scheduling Software Package (EMSSP/MINESTAR). Simultaneously with this requirement were additional factors that contributed to the implementation of the EMSSP. The mine was owned by a joint venture of two partners and is operated by Middelburg Mine services (Rand Mines Pty. Ltd) (Figure 2). This structure of ownership required the evaluation of numerous planning options to be under-taken concurrently and hence the need for an efficient streamlined scheduling pack-age that could fulfill this requirement. Compounding the EMSSP needs further, were the problems experienced in the export market, these being the external pressure from current and new suppliers in the market place which obliged management to provide solutions to rapidly changing market conditions. These fluctuating market conditions have had a direct effect upon the mine's planning strategies because of the large percentage of the mine?s sales sold on the international spot market. The sanction factor for all South African exporters has had a negative effect upon price and this was compounded further through internal competition in 1987 via suppliers attempting to maintain the market position.

INTRODUCTION General Switzerland is a densely populated country in the heart of Europe. With its total surface of 41.300 km2 and a population of 6,8 million in 1986 the average population density is 163 capita / km2. The population density is lower than in Germany (245 capita/ km2) or the Netherlands (355 capita/km2). The USA have a population density of 26 capita/ km 2. However, sixty percent of the Swiss surface is covered by the Alps and another ten percent by the Jura mountains the remaining thirty percent of the surface is covered by the Swiss plateau where the majority of the population lives. The population in the inhabitated areas is thus substantially higher and may possibly reach those in major metropolitain areas. Due to the high population density in Europe in general and Switzerland in particular future traffic demands cannot be fulfilled sole by car or plane. Environmental and land-use constraints lead to the third option for growing transportation needs: High-speed rail (Bovy, 1990). Switzerland has developed its own approach to promote public transportation and in particular rail transportation: "Rail 2000" (Stalder, 1990). The system "Rail 2000" is based on a series of hubs distributed over Switzerland where easy connections can be made.

Pine Point Mines is located in the Northwest Territories of Canada, about 500 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta (figure 1). Lead-zinc ore is found in numerous localized deposits along a generally east-west trending reef of Devonian dolomite, about 5 miles south of Great Slave Lake. A pumping-test program was carried out in 1968 to guide the design of dewatering systems for several open pits that are partially or wholly below the natural ground-water levels. The hydrogeologic conditions, methods employed and results obtained are discussed.

There is much interest in the automation of entire comminution circuits, At the present technological level it is possible to automate a circuit but to date it has not been done, To successfully automate a circuit, a number of problems must be solved. Not all of them are engineering problems. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of these problems, as certain the implications of these problems and indicate solutions to them. In this paper the term "automation" is used loosely but in the popular sense. Namely, that a plant is automated if a computer is used to control the basic flow of the materials as well as setting the critical parameters in the process. Specifically, the discussion will concern itself with the control of comminution circuits from the dumping of the ore into the primary crusher until the final interface between the comminution circuit and say, the flotation mill in the case of a sulfide ore.

To ensure the continued growth and economic viability of the Western coal industry, both in the domestic and inter- national markets, it is essential for the industry to become more creative and active in confronting the most serious obstacle in this objective; and that is, the inherently long distances which Western coal must be transported inland to reach its major markets. Figure 1 shows the 1982 coal consumption by state for those states where Western coal was consumed. (Except as noted in this paper, Western coal producing states are defined as Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. Any exceptions used will have only an insignificant effect on the content of the paper). This figure illustrates the long distances that are required for Western coal to reach its markets. The total production for 1982 from the Western coal producing states was approximately 220 million tons, of which only 85 million tons was consumed within the boundaries of these states. The remainder was transported to markets outside the area. This map also shows, based strictly on the consumption of the states to which Western coal was shipped during 1982 and not considering other factors which are involved in the marketing of coal, the total market potential of Western coal would amount to a total of 445 million tons. This does not include export coal from the West Coast, which is now estimated to be less than 2 million tons for 1983. In 1980, it had been estimated that by 1985 the West Coast exports would have been at least 10 million tons per year, which will not be attained.

In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is getting popular in deeper open pit mines as a suitable alternative to truck haulage because it offers a lower operating cost due to shorter haulage distance and less truck requirement. Semi-mobile in-pit crusher, currently the most popular IPCC system, is relocated every two to five years, and the short-term plan needs to be updated accordingly. To the best of our knowledge, short-term planning with IPCC is an area of research that has yet to be explored extensively, and hardly any model can generate a shortterm extraction sequence considering an IPCC. This research work proposes a mixed integer programming model to develop a short-term production plan within a time horizon of 12 months. The model's objective is to optimally allocate shovels to minimize the cost of material handling and maximize revenue subject to meeting plant requirements, maximum allowable tonnage variation and IPCC location constraints to achieve production and NPV targets set by the strategic plan. The proposed model will be implemented in an iron ore mine case study for verification. The model is developed and solved using MATLAB. The comparison of results between scenarios with and without IPCC justifies the use of IPCC in large open pit mines from a short-term perspective.

This chrysotile asbestos orebody is located near the northern tip of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It is some 1818 km (1130 mi) north of Montreal; 480 km (300 mi) north of the tree line and is situated within the zone of continuous permafrost. The open pit ore zone is approximately 0.4 km (1/4 mi) in length some 61 m (200 ft) in width and plunges at 25-30 below surface to a vertical depth of at least 610 m (2000 ft). The orebody was originally evaluated by programs of surface mapping, diamond drilling and bulk sampling. The fibre is semi-crude, possesses excellent strength, and good fibre length distribution.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. Uranium associated with phosphate deposits has been the subject of numerous investigations (1-8). In the land-pebble phosphate deposits of central Florida, uranium is found in the phosphate matrix (ore) and in the leached zone between the over-burden and matrix (1). Between 0.01 to 0.02 percent uranium is found in the leached zone, which consists of apatite and aluminum phosphate minerals (crandallite, wavellite, millisite) (Z). The primary phosphate mineral in the matrix is apatite, and the 0.005 to 0.01 percent uranium typically found in the matrix is associated with this mineral (1). It is generally believed that uranium substitutes for calcium in the apatite structure (3-5). Clay and quartz phases associated with phosphate deposits contain little uranium (1, 6), and no descrete uranium minerals have been detected in these deposits (4). A typical phosphate matrix consists of quartz, slimes (-150 mesh material) and recoverable phosphate. When the matrix is beneficiated, partition of uranium and radium takes place (9, 10). Although considerable data exists on how uranium is distributed in the phosphate deposits, no systematic study has recently been reported on the distribution of uranium during phosphate rock beneficiation. The purpose of this study was to determine how uranium is distributed in the various strata which comprise the overall land-pebble phosphate deposits, as well as how the uranium is redistributed during beneficiation of phosphate matrix. To obtain this information studies were carried out on matrix samples obtained from three different mines in central Florida. Using pilot-plant scale beneficiation, an analysis was performed on how uranium in the matrix is distributed among the pebble fractions, flotation concentrates, flotation tails, and slimes. The uranium level profile for an active mining area was also obtained. Also, since thousands of acres of slime ponds may someday become a source of both phosphate and uranium, a depth versus uranium content profile was determined for an inactive slime pond.

INTRODUCTION The problems involved with moving millions of tons of rock are being addressed by nationally recognized tunnel contractors who have converged in Chicago over the past 5 years. This wealth of expertise has been needed to meet the risk and challenge of constructing the world's largest network of underground tunnels which in turn has required a dramatic advance in the art and science of tunneling. These pioneers, through innovation, adaptation, and hard work, have eliminated the one major concern of The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago - how to move 8 million tons of rock. The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves 122 municipalities covering 866 square miles in Cook County, Illinois. Of these cities, towns, and villages, 53 have combined sewer systems. On an average of once every four days, these systems overflow about 4 million gallons of combined sewage and rainwater into the area's rivers and canals. The overflows occur at approximately 640 outfall locations of which 10% are owned by the MSDGC, with the remainder of the points belonging to various other municipal bodies. All those who own these "point" sources of pollution are in violation of Illinois State and Federal regulations. To enable its member municipalities to come into compliance with State and Federal law, the MSDGC is implementing its Tunnel And Reservoir Plan (TARP). TARP is a regional solution to the problem of combined sewer overflow in the metropolitan Chicago area. The changes in the elemental contents and the structural properties of chalcopyrite concentrate when roasted were studied, and the main reactions contributing to the leaching process revisited. Firstly, TG/DTA measurements were performed to identify the roasting temperatures that influenced the type of species reacting with sulphuric acid leaching liquor. The temperatures of main reactions, whose output may affect the subsequent leaching process, were analysed for the concentrate at hand, and concluded to be generally lower than those reported in literature. Secondly, the obtained results were confirmed by images and XRD measurements on the roasted concentrate at temperatures in between 350 and 600 °C with increments of 50 °C. Finally, the leaching behaviour of the roasted specimens in a stirred sulphuric acid solution examined and the Cu/ Fe selectivity investigated that the maximum Cu/Fe ratio in the pregnant solution would nearly be achieved for the roasting temperatures lower than 500 °C, since the oxidation temperature of iron sulphate is found lower than that of copper sulphate.

The aim of this paper is to assess the effect of microwave treatment on copper sulfide ore for ball milling and bed breakage. Liberation analysis of ground products in eight size fractions showed that microwave pretreatment liberated more chalcopyrite particles from the bed breakage product than the ball mill product. In bed breakage, microwave pretreatment caused a 2% increase in chalcopyrite liberation on average. Microwave pretreatment produces more elongated particles in ball milling and more rounded particles in bed breakage, respectively. Microwave pretreatment produces coarser chalcopyrite particles with a wide range of sizes. This effect is more significant in bed breakage compared with ball milling. Micro-flotation test results showed that in ball milling, treated and untreated materials have similar metallurgical performance and there is a little difference (1%) between the average Cu recovery values. However, in bed breakage, the average recovery for the treated materials is about 5% higher than the untreated materials.

The purpose of these opening remarks is to establish a viewpoint, which will form part of the basis for later discussion between panel members and between the panel and the audience. Important issues will be identified. These ideas in the form of questions and answers, hopefully, will provide the necessary background for the ensuing dialogue. Is There An Urgency? We do not believe there is the urgency for immediate control legislation that has been depicted by some Congressional sources, environmental groups, and certain segments of the press. Emissions of sulfur oxides in the United States have decreased 15% during the 19701s, even though the use of coal by electrical utility power plants increased nearly 80%. That trend will continue as the older plants are phased out of operation and are replaced with newer plants, which must meet the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) requiring the use of "scrubbers" to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 70% or 90%. The present Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, by allowing the logical progression of economic events- -depreciation, retirement, replacement, and growth--will produce approximately a 50 % reduction in SOX emissions by the year 2015.

In this paper, we show that the methane emission and the dust generation in under-ground mining currently and in the future pose operational, health and safety conditions which adversely Impact face productivity and worker satisfaction. One solution is the use of a dual-aircourse system of ventilation. In this concept, one aircourse captures and exhausts to the surface the dust generated and the methane emitted in coal/mineral fragmentation while a second aircourse provides workers with cleaner air for breathing and comfort. Various dual-aircourse configurations adapted to the Variable Wall Miner are analyzed and compared with conventional mining in gassy seams, indicating a marked reduction in the required air quantity and the number of aircourses.

If you are contemplating starting a small coal mining operation there is a good possi¬bility that you can not afford it. If you, have already started, you may be on the road to bankruptcy. If you are a small but well established operator you may be trading dollars, or even dissipating your capital, equipment and other assets. A bleak outlook? Yes! Meant to be discouraging? No! Just a reminder that, with todays costs of doing business, high interest rates, rapidly increasing costs and decreasing sales prices, a small businessman/miner had best watch closely or he will be mired in something worse than a soft bottom - namely a cash and credit shortage, and in too many instances In recent times, bankruptcy. We will not dwell on what happens once you are that far gone, though I could cite a good example. But, let us look at what should be done to avoid such a catastrophe.

The wettabilities of agglomerates made from coals of several different ranks were measured by the adhesion technique. Oil levels from 0 to 10% by weight were used. As was expected, it was found that higher-rank coals are more easily oil-wetted and that the surface properties of the agglomerates correlate with agglomeration recovery and ash removal data.

"The Mine Haul Road Optimization Alliance is an Australian industry-academia collaboration which has been developed to support mine haul road operators by fully integrating mine road design research solutions with industry end-user service providers to design, assess, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies required to optimize the safety, environmental and economic performance of a haul road. Initially, a broad overview of the university-industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis, internationally. This insight places realization of a collaboration between Curtin University Western Australian School of Mines Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering (WASM ME2) and the Haul Road Optimization Alliance (HROA) industry members into context of opportunity. Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry can collaborate to deliver a more robust solution to mine haul road design, performance or management needs, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service-providers alike forms the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and implementable solutions. The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver improved mine haul road designs and optimized operational performance, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through focused, end-user driven research and integrated solutions implementation."

Rock dust is applied in underground coal mines to prevent the propagation of coal dust explosions. It is applied either dry or wet. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages, but the formation of caked rock dust particles is cited as a significant concern for wet applications. We conducted a study to evaluate the effect of modifying the rock dust particle surfaces to repel water and each other by the addition of oleic acid and sodium oleate. At a sodium oleate dosage of 1 kg/t, a contact angle of 112o was measured, indicating strong surface hydrophobicity and thus the ability to repel water. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies indicated a chemisorption mechanism, which is necessary for long-term stability of the surface modification. The dispersibility of the modified rock dust samples was elevated by the application of both oleic acid and sodium oleate, thereby indicating a significant reduction or elimination of the detrimental effect of caking. Tests in an explosion chamber showed an 82.8 percent reduction in the dust explosion potential relative to untreated rock test applied by the wet technique.

Subsidence planning and control must be an integral part of mine design in order to minimize the economic impact of underground mining on the surface. Pre-calculation of surface deformations which may cause damage to surface structures must be performed and dam-age criteria must be established, if the response of structures to such movements is to be determined and the extent of damages to be assessed. In this paper the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S.), which can be used to predict accurately the vertical and horizontal parameters of surface movements due to underground mining, is discussed. The Subsidence Response Modeling Program (S.R.M.P.). which can be applied to evaluate the response of buildings to subsidence-induced movements, is also reviewed. Finally, an example is presented demonstrating the applicability of these techniques for subsidence design and control.
