A surface charge sensor has been developed that responds to changes in the double layer properties of colloidal silica during the cationic flotation of silica from taconite ores. Sensor design allows for the measurement of two aspects of the electrical double layer surrounding all solids immersed in ionic solutions. One aspect responds to a flow induced change in the double layer properties of a solid. The other is a function of the chemical composition of the aqueous phase. Evaluation of sensor performance during froth flotation experiments has been encouraging. Process monitoring capabilities are indicated.

The Port of Conneaut, the largest bulk material handling and storage facility on the Great Lakes, is using the latest electronic and visual testing devices to augment and enhance its well established computerized preventive maintenance system. The results of this comprehensive program have been impressive. The remaining life of components can be accurately forcast, and replacement can be programmed around operations, resulting in a significant improvement in system availability and reduced costs for the dock operator and its customers.

The Gaudin lecture is devoted to fundamentals. Given my involvement with column flotation over the last 20 years, this is my topic. I have tried to identify spinoff basic research and provide a personal list of favorites. Two are selected for discussion here. They are single bubble rise and bubble surface area flux. The rationale for such work, as well as some of the findings, are reviewed. Support for fundamental work seems as volatile as the economy (and the link is probably not coincidental). I hope some utility to the minerals industry is evident in the text. Column flotation in its current form originated in the early 1960s. The method was invented by Boutin, patented by Boutin and Tremblay and pursued doggedly by Wheeler. Their aim was to overcome the problem of mechanical entrainment of fine particles in the water carried by the bubbles, which they were convinced contributed to lowering flotation concentrate grades (Wheeler, 1988; Finch and Dobby, 1990). The solution was a combination of columnar geometry, the addition of wash water into a deep froth and the maintenance of an excess of water to the tailings, as compared to the feed (a so-called positive bias). Success at Les Mines Gaspe, Quebec, on cleaning Mo in the early 1980s signaled the start of industrial acceptance, making the column one of the flotation machines of choice today. Over the next 20 years, column applications mushroomed to cover virtually all mineral commodities, as well as nonmineral applications such as soil decontamination, deoiling of water and deinking of recycled paper. In the wake, research groups are continuing to probe the fundamentals, conferences and workshops have been transferring the technology and specialist companies have emerged to service the demand. Innovations were triggered as problems arose (for instance, in gas injection systems) and novel flotation cells, much in vogue in the 1990s, had the door opened. Mechanical cell manufacturers have not been idle - there is nothing like competition to provoke a fresh look at an established business. Flotation-cell technology has probably not seen so much activity since the patent rush in the early days of flotation, which occurred around the turn of the century. For an industry often considered reluctant to risk innovation, this is not a bad record. A good idea will find a place, but patience (not always an innovators strong suit) and careful preparation are required. Two books (Finch and Dobby, 1990; Rubenstein, 1996), three symposia (Sastry, 1988; Agar and Huls, 1991; Gomez and Finch, 1996), and a series of reviews (Dobby and Finch, 1991; Finch and Dobby, 1991; Finch, 1995; Finch et al., 1995) document the period. Like many good ideas, column flotation has been overexposed, and there have been disappointments. The expansion of the United States economy in the postwar period has had a tremendous impact on the demand for energy. Not only has total energy consumption increased at an unprecedented rate, but there have been major shifts in the composition or mix of energy resources within the end-use sectors. Because of the numerous interrelationships between substitutable energy resources and their markets, the energy economy can only be analyzed in terms of the trends of its component parts. This problem takes on additional complexity when attempting to chart the nation's future energy requirements. Total energy consumption can be forecast with reasonable accuracy for periods up to 15 years by relating this to projections of economic indicators. However, forecasting the component parts of the energy economy constitutes a dilemma in that the sum of the projected parts frequently exceeds predictions for total energy. Areas of uncertainty in energy forecasting tend to mount rapidly when proceeding from total energy to the consideration of specific energy resources consumed as fuel, power, or raw materials.

The Refugio Project is located in the Andes mountains of northern Chile, in the Maricunga Hineral Belt. The Verde, Pancho and Guanaco Au ore bodies have been recognized and are Early Miocene in age. Mineralization consists of fine-grained disseminated gold hosted by dacitic to dioritic subvolcanic porphyries. Alteration comprises massive to veinlet-controlled silicification overprinted on earlier potassic and propylitic alteration and surrounded by later argillic alteration. Geologic relationships suggest that the Refugio ore bodies occur within an Early Tertiary volcano overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement rocks. Geologic reserves at Refugio are approximately 300 million grams (9.7 million ounces) of gold. The Verde deposit contains 185 million tonnes of mineable and leachable ore with an average grade of 0.90 glt Au and is currently in the pre-construction stage after a positive feasibility study. Proven and probable mining reserves at Verde deposit are 101 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.02 glt gold. Additional potential exists at to other deposits within the Refugio property (Pancho and Guanaco) but no reserves have yet been defined due to the limited drilling to date.

The mechanism of gold uptake from iodide solutions by carbon has been investigated. Adsorption isotherms for gold and iodine were established. For activated carbon, approximately 300 mg of gold and 1000 mg of iodine were extracted per gram of carbon at maximum loading. Examination of loaded activated carbon particles by scanning electron microscopy reveals isolated patches of gold deposited on the carbon surface. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that fine gold particles (1-4 nm diameter) are uniformly distributed within the carbon. Iodine was also observed throughout the matrix. The uptake of gold by carbon from iodide solution involves a combined reduction and adsorption process, where the gold iodide species is reduced to the metallic state superficially and adsorbed in the porous structure of carbon. A few experiments for the gold-chloride and gold-bromide systems were carried out for comparison.

The successful technical demonstration of coarse coal slurry transportation at Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine in West Virginia suggests that it is now appropriate to seriously consider this technology in other applications, especially the transport of ' coal in surface mining. Early examination indicates that coarse coal slurry transport may be highly competitive with existing haulage systems, depending on a number of factors. These factors are not yet completely defined, but certainly will include production rates, coal physical and chemical properties, terrain, soil conditions, climate, water availability and quality, availability of skilled labor and other economic considerations impacting the existing haulage systems.

During 1996, US mines produced 319 t (10.26 million or) of gold metal valued at $4 billion. At yearend, mine reserves were estimated to be 4.7 kt (151 million oz) of gold metal. Almost all of the production was from western states. Nevada accounted for about 68% of national production. Information for this article was obtained through annual reports of mining companies, US Geological Survey (USGS) databases and other public sources. Table 1 shows production and reserves by mine. It divides the mines into two categories. These are producing mines whose primary product is gold, and producing mines for which gold is a byproduct or coproduct. The mines listed in Table 1 accounted for more than 98% of US gold production during 1996. Except the Daisy Mine, the table does not include mines that produced less than 31 kg/a (1,000 oz/year). The pelletizing process for low grade iron ores has undergone continual changes since its inception over twenty years ago. These changes have necessitated filtration equipment changes in order to produce a product suitable for balling. With modern techniques it is now possible to produce pellets of 68% Fe from ores containing as low as 26% Fe. Low grade ores require fine grinding to liberate impurities This shift to finer grinds over the years has necessitated major changes in the filtration steps. Techniques are now available for producing suitable product from ores with Blaines as high as 3600 cm2/gram. This has been made possible by the development of high performance filters. Recent developments have reduced maintenance costs and produced higher production reliability. The paper discusses iron concentrate filtration from its beginning to present day design. It will be shown that the dewatering step prior to balling has gone through four generations of filters. Particular emphasis is placed upon hydraulic studies which have allowed today's optimum designs.

It is the nature of mining to reshape the landscape. Mining is an earth moving process with many of the same activities associated with the regrading of a site for a shopping center, drainage channel, housing project or ballfield. The difference exists only in purpose and duration of activity. The purpose of mining is to, produce a valuable product. The purpose of regrading for construction of a project is to create a predetermined landscape for a specific end use. In both situations the objective is to move earth materials as efficiently as possible. The question is then raised, if similarities exist, can mining operations be directed to shape predetermined landscapes as an integral part of its earth moving activity. This paper will explore the opportunities and issues of shaping sand, gravel and hardrock construction aggregate sites for productive end uses. It is based upon the premise that, as an earth moving operation, the process of extracting sand and gravel includes an inherent capability to shape productive lands as an integral part of the mining operation. In the course of any mining operation non-commercial materials, including overburden, fines and excess sand are handled to extract and process the commercial products. This activity exists regardless of whether or not there is a plan to reclaim the land. Moving this dirt is a basic operational cost. This cost need not be significantly increased when the material is deposited to shape land rather than be stock- piled just to clear the way for mining the deposit. Moving of dirt to create useable land can be guided by the same criteria used to remove the dirt from the deposit: for example, limiting the- hauling distance. Over a period of time earth handling costs can be reduced by minimizing the need to transport the stockpiled material a second time to the new landform location.

A major design feature to consider from the initial pioneering works until reaching full mine production of icy regolith at the South Pole of Moon will be the ramp. This will allow the access of equipment and personnel in and out of the excavation area. Although most of the requirements considered when designing a ramp on the Earth are similar, the fact of working in low gravity, with zero atmosphere, the potential exposure to high radiation, extreme temperature levels and drastic changes of illumination, from intense light to total darkness, are new factors to be included. Transversal sections are obtained according to the progression sequence of the production levels, with changes in length, gradient, friction factor of the terrain and curvature when required by the location characteristics and the specification of the equipment utilized. A MATLAB script was developed to calculate all the variables, in order to obtain 3D generated surfaces from the range of possible profiles.

The literature defines rockbursts in slightly different ways based on their generation mechanisms, field phenomena, and degree of damage, but in a way that is almost consistent. Generally, a rockburst refers to seismic events that mainly happen in underground excavations, for purposes such as underground mining, road and railway tunnels, nuclear power, etc., and that are followed by the collapse and outburst of rocks. Long-term rockburst prediction can be abstracted as a classification problem mathematically, in which we can introduce deep learning to solve it. Further, using deep learning in rockburst prediction can overcome drawbacks such as subjectivity and inconsistency brought from previous traditional approaches. A rockburst data-set, was employed to evaluate the current method for predicting rockburst grade, and the good results of overall success rate were obtained. The results indicated that the proposed algorithms can speed up parameter optimization search, the proposed method is robust model and might hold a high potential to become a useful tool in rockburst prediction research.

"When MacLean Engineering chairman and founder Don MacLean got the first question from a minesite about the possibility of addressing ventilation limits through incremental fleet electrification, he was intrigued. It was back in 2015, and the MacLean scissor bolter was already diesel-electric (jumbo trailing cable), so it made sense to him that if they could engineer a battery drive system for the unit’s tramming cycle, they would have the inaugural electric vehicle (EV) MacLean unit.At that time, there were not any entirely diesel-free hard rock mines in existence on the planet, and that remains the case to this day — although the Borden project in northern Ontario is progressing toward that goal (see page 33). This meant there was essentially zero market demand for battery electric vehicles as well as a complete lack of battery technology to address the battery electrification of heavy haulage. Heavy haulage is the part of a typical mine’s mobile fleet with the largest footprint when it comes to diesel particulate emissions, greenhouse gases and wasted energy in the form of heat.Three years later — the wave of battery electrification that is currently picking up speed across the mining industry promises to hit full swing by the early 2020s when a slew of new build, diesel-free mines will start construction. But this movement toward emissions-free mobile fleets is not a completely new phenomenon. Instead, it is an updating of mining technology from a previous generation. What is going on now is the re-electrification of mining. Up until the 1960s, early generations of battery technology (lead acid) and electric locomotive systems were the norm for material and ore haulage in Canada and elsewhere.The thought of a coming paradigm change in mining was particularly pertinent to Don MacLean back in 2015, as he had been part of the era that ushered in the first generation of rubber-tire diesel equipment, when he was a divisional foreman with Inco in Sudbury in the 1970s. He was part of the operating team that was tasked to build a rail loop on one extraction level of the mine. At that time, events on the ground overtook the project, as diesel-powered mobile equipment became a viable option. Once the first diesel scoop was introduced at Creighton #3 shaft, it was clear what the power, haulage capacity and mobility could do for operations and that era of electric rail haulage underground was effectively over."

Foskor operates a mine in the Northern Province of the Republic of South Africa exploiting the igneous complex at Phalaborwa. It produces about 3 million tons of phosphate concentrate per year by means of froth flotation from 26 million tons of ore of which 16 million is mined and milled on site. The remaining 10 million tons originate at the Palabora Mining Company and is pumped as a slurry to Foskor. Two types of ore are mined and milled namely Foskorite and Pyroxenite. (The main mineral content of this ore is Apatite, Phlogopite and Diopside.) After three stages of crushing the ore is milled using 24 rod mills and 5 verti mills. The apatite is then recovered using four stages of froth flotation. The stocks of Foskorite ore are rapidly being depleted and the PMC tailings will also fall away by the year 2002 so that the whole mining operation will then be centered around the Pyroxenite ore. This will lead to substantial increases in production costs. The recoveries achieved in the flotation plant are largely dependent on the successful operation of the comminution section. Parts of this plant are now 35 years old and the advantages of re-engineering, new technology and automation can only be applied to a limited extent in an effort to reduce costs. It was then decided to investigate alternative milling methods, both wet and dry.

The occurrence of borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo is well documented by McAnulty and Hoffer (1) and Lefond and Barker (2). Further investigation indicates the presence of priceite and meyerhofferite in addition to the howlite (1) and colemanite (2). Analcime occurs in addition to the clinoptilolite and phillipsite (2). The Mesa del Alamo area is about 200 !a south of Tucson, Arizona, and 13 km southeast of Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico, just south of the unpaved road to Cucurpe (Figure 1). The geology and mineralogy of northcentral Sonora is known only on a regional basis except for small areas mapped in detail during copper exploration. The study area is within the Basin and Range province of North America from which borates and zeolites are now produced in California. The borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo occur in geological environments similar to those of the Mojave and Death Valley regions of California (3, 4). Thus, a detailed exploration pro- gram in the Magdalena area could result in the discovery of economic borate and/or zeolite deposits.

The design of cover systems for reclamation schemes in tailings requires estimation or determination of tailings materials properties such as compressibility, shear strength and consolidation characteristics. It is very difficult and expensive to obtain truly undisturbed tailings samples for laboratory testing. In situ testing methods have been developed for economically obtaining large amounts of information. Two of these methods are described, the piezocone and the flat plate dilatometer. Both of these methods provide a rapid means of detailed material identification in a nearly continuous fashion for the entire depth investigated. The equipment is described and typical data from a uranium tailings impoundment is presented. The results are compared and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed.

During 1982 Ash Grove Cement Company contracted with Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company to convert a Calcimatic rotating hearth kiln at its Portland, Oregon lime plant from gas/oil to coal firing. Increasing costs of natural gas and No. 6 fuel oil made this conversion mandatory if the plant was to remain competitive. Unique features of this project are 1) the distributors of pulverized coal to eighteen small burners around the inner and outer perimeters of the doughnut-shaped kiln, and 2) the attrition-dryer-pulverizer mill. Ash Grove, a century-old lime and cement producer headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas (Kansas City area), looked at various schemes for multiple burner firing before employing Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company. W.W.T. of Pitts- burgh, Pennsylvania was formed in 1980 by acquiring the Solid Fuels Division of the Pullman Swindell Corporation. This division had been active in developing solid fuel firing for brick tunnel kilns, principally in the Southeast. They continue to supply such systems firing wood waste as well as coal to the brick industry and have also converted two Calcimatic lime kilns for Dixie Lime, Sumterville, Florida, a fluid bed calciner for Texas Gulf in Aurora, North Carolina, and a chrome concentrate kiln for Diamond Chemicals at Castle Hayne, North Carolina. Testing and a proposal have been made for INMETCO, Elwood City, Pennsylvania, on an annular hearth furnace for direct reduction of iron ore to metallic iron.

The Hallmark Distribution Center is one of the most sophisticated material handling and order filling facilities in the world. The 53 million cubic foot facility houses an ultra-modern, computer- monitored distribution complex that handles as many as 1/4 million orders per day. The Distribution Center replaces 16 leased buildings scattered through- out metropolitan Kansas City and, in addition, re-leased 4 floors in mid-town Kansas City needed for creative and administrative expansion. This new facility is the nerve center for distribution of Hallmark products in United States and Latin America. The size and gross numbers of all parts of the system is a significant accomplishment, but the purpose of this paper is to explain the technical advancements in the state-of-the-art of material handling and controls. The system iteself is made up of seven sub-systems including receiving, warehousing, picking rack stocking, towline, order filling, order sorting, and shipping. Significant techniques were used in each of these areas as well as technical advancements in the state-of-the- art. The most significant points are in 4 of the areas and are discussed in this paper.

Introduction My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rap- idly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Griffith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: • Kick's Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modern fracture theory; • Rittinger's Law, which was also clearly not correct; • Bond's Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Griffith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo- scientific reasoning I could not accept; • the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as “the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger's Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1 948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1 956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1 953) in Germany. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1 962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, (Fig. 1) (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959). Irwin (1949) showed from solution of the stress-strain solutions that a small hole in a region of tensile stress reduces stress concentration at the hole, that is, the tensile stress at the tip of a crack or flaw in a solid is much higher than the general tensile stress in the region. The longer the crack, the higher the stress concentration. Griffith (1920) hypothesized that when the regional tensile stress is large enough, then the chemical bonds at a preexisting crack tip are stretched to breaking point, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the bonds break, the crack becomes longer, the tensile stress concentration increases, the situation is unstable and a crack opens up (propagates) a surface of tensile stress, creating its own tensile stress at the leading edge. Stored strain energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the moving stress field, which is analogous to sound propagation through the solid, so the crack tip accelerates to velocities approaching those of sound. The moving crack will pass through regions that were previously under regional compressive stress.
