The new Roasting Facility at Barrick’s Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, U.S.A. was developed to process 12,000 tons per day of refractory gold ore. The process consists of crushing, dry grinding, roasting, extensive gas purification, calcine quenching and leaching in the presence of activated carbon. The new plant is integrated into the existing Goldstrike facility, treating ore from both open pit and underground sources. The process design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the Roaster facility was performed successfully over a 3½ year period with peaks of 400 engineering personnel and 950 construction personnel supporting the project. The US$330,000,000 project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The commissioning was well planned and proceeded smoothly through a rapid start-up to achieve all primary goals within three months of the start of processing of ore.

Eminent domain overview Eminent domain is the power of the Government or a municipality to take property for public use without the consent or acceptance of the owner. Typically, the agency taking the prop¬erty will make an offer, hoping the owner will immediately accept and allow work to begin. If a mutual resolution regard¬ing its value cannot be reached, how¬ever, the municipality will institute a condemnation action in court seeking possion of the property. This is when the problems begin. The power of the Government to take the subject property is limited by Federal and state constitu¬tional requirements to pay "just com¬pensation" for the property. The exact nature of an owner's prop¬erty has been the subject of much debate and discussion. It is generally under¬stood, though, that property is consid¬ered to be "every kind of right or inter¬est, capable of being enjoyed and recog¬nized as such, upon which it is practi¬cable to place a money value" (US vs. 53 114 Acres of Land). A taking, for condemnation purposes, is considered to occur whenever there is a substantial interference with the free use and enjoyment of the property. Rarely is the necessity for the taking ever challenged and more rarely is the taking ever successfully challenged. When a taking occurs, it is not only the fee owner who is entitled to compen¬sation. Every person holding an interest in the subject property will be recog¬nized. Thus, all persons who at the time of taking have a compensable interest in the property will be made parties to the case (Swanson vs. US). Minerals, like all other interests in land, are recognized as property rights, giving the owner the power to dispose of them as he or she sees fit. Thus, the only remaining considera¬tion is only "just compensation." Ex¬actly what "just compensation" is has been difficult to define. Generally, it is that amount of money that will "put the person in as good a position as the per¬son would have been in had the taking not occurred." The owner must not be forced to sacrifice or suffer by receiving less than full and fair value for the prop¬erty. Every element that effects the value of the land and that would influence a purchaser must be evaluated. Courts have employed a variety of techniques to determine just compensa¬tion but have generally relied on market value as the standard for measuring compensation to the owner. The deter¬mination of market value is based on sales, income, costs, and use. These factors have been employed in various ways but can be summed up as: -The highest estimated monetary price the property will bring if exposed for sale in the open market with a reason¬able amount of time allowed to find a purchaser who is buying with knowl¬edge of all the uses and purposes to which it is adapted and for which it is capable of being used. • The amount the property would bring if it were offered for sale by one who desired, but was not obliged, to sell, and was bought by one who was willing, but not obliged to buy. • What the property would bring in the hands of a prudent seller, at liberty to fix the time and conditions of sale. • What the property would sell for in negotiations resulting in sale between an owner willing, but not obliged to sell, and a buyer willing, but not obliged to buy. • What the property would be rea¬sonably worth on the market for a cash price, allowing a reasonable time to affect a sale. (Michigan Standard Jury Instructions). Special consideration regarding mar¬ket value is given when the taking is only partial, rather than complete. An example of this partial taking is when a state highway cuts across the northern half of a parcel of property, leaving the rest behind for the owner. A variety of problems can be immediately seen. In a partial taking, the owner is permitted to recover not only for the property taken, but also for any loss in the value of the remaining property. The measure of compensation for partial taking purposes is generally the difference between the market value of the entire parcel before the taking, and the market value of what is left of the parcel after the taking (Michigan Stan¬dard Jury Instructions). Determining the partial taking value for mineral bear¬ing lands is the difficult issue.

Mineral extraction activities in the deep sea will expose the local fauna to potentially toxic compounds. However, very few data are currently available on the complex ecotoxicological risks to deep-sea fauna from the potential release of heavy metals, trace metals and Rare Earth Elements (REEs). Nonetheless, this is key information essential to support the regulation of industrial activities in the deep sea. One of the fundamental issues that the MIDAS project will address consists in exploring the concept of whether the existing toxicity test protocols and limits established in shallow-water species are applicable to deep-sea mining. We will detail the specific challenges to recommending exposure limits within the deep sea and show preliminary results of comparative toxicity tests in the shallow-water and in the deep-sea environment.

Surface and underground mining operations require equipment with high power output ratings. Haul trucks, loaders, dozers, and other equipment need increasing horse-power to meet production demands. To get more horsepower out of the engines driving the equipment, most manufacturers use turbocharging. Detroit Diesel puts the number at about 90% turbocharged, while Caterpillar estimates 75% to 80% of all its equipment is turbocharged. Turbocharging increases the power output and overall engine efficiency. But it presents some maintenance and operational problems that were not factors when only naturally aspirated engines (nonturbocharged) dominated the scene. A turbocharger is an exhaust-driven air compressor. Using the waste energy in the engine exhaust, a turbine wheel is driven. This wheel is connected by a common shaft to a compressor wheel. The shaft is supported by two plain bearings, or bushings. As the turbine wheel is rotated, the compressor wheel continually compresses the intake air to the cylinders. Compressing the intake air means that more air can be put into the cylinder to burn more fuel. The more fuel the engine can completely burn or combust, the more horsepower the engine can produce. Even though the turbocharger is a relatively simple device, it is a sensitive engine component. It requires special consideration at engine start-up and shutdown. Being freewheeling and exhaust driven, turbochargers can experience temperatures of 540°C 1000°F) and rotational speeds of more than 100,000 rpm. Due to those temperatures and speeds, lubrication is critical to the operation and life of a turbocharger. The turbo is located high on the engine, with the oil supply running through an external line from the sump. The recommended practice is to start the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes before any revving or loading. This allows the oil to reach the turbo and properly lubricate the bearings before high rotational speeds are seen. Turbo oil supply lines can be as long as 1.5 m (5 ft). Depending on ambient temperatures and oil viscosity, it can take as long as 30 seconds for oil to reach the spinning turbo. However, as little as five seconds without oil can damage the turbo's bearings, reducing its life and overall efficiency. Lubrication problems seen at shut-down can also significantly affect turbo life and efficiency. Manufacturers recommend an idling period of five to seven minutes before engine shutdown. This allows the turbo to slow down and cool off somewhat to help prevent oil coking and bearing damage. When the engine stops, so does the oil supply. There is very little oil left on the bearing surfaces and in the turbo oil supply passages. The immediate heat transfer from the turbine wheel to shaft, bearings, and turbo body literally cooks what is left. This high heat without oil flow can cause bearing deformation by actually melting some of the bearing material. The rapid oil oxidation and coking will restrict oil passages, damage bearings and shaft. Besides heat soaking, there is another problem. If the turbo is spinning at high speeds when the engine is shutdown, the turbo must spin-down to a stop without oil flow. With the large size of turbos used on mining equipment, this spindown time without oil can be for as long as 10 to 20 seconds. Fortunately, lack of lubrication at start-up and shutdown and the subsequent bearing damage can be prevented by oil injection devices. These devices hold a reservoir of engine oil. The oil is injected to the turbocharger bearings immediately on start-up and for several minutes after shutdown. Oil injection devices are spring loaded, hydraulic accumulators. They are actuated at start-up by a solenoid wired to the starter motor. Engine oil pressure charges the accumulator during normal operation. Upon shut-down and loss of oil pressure, the device provides oil to the turbo for about two or three minutes. With an oil injection device, the engine can be started and immediately driven without fear of turbo damage. Also, an abrupt shutdown will not damage the turbocharger since the device will continue to lubricate for two or three minutes. A word of caution. Be sure the oil injection device provides positive oil displacement (pressurized oil flow). Do not use a gravity-flow device. Unless it is a true accumulator, the device could starve the turbo for oil on start-up, Ask for start-up and shut-down pressures and delivery times before considering installation. Keep the oil clean, and follow the manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals. These intervals are usually shorter than with naturally aspirated engines. Use oil with a CD rating designed for diesel applications. A multiviscosity oil is preferable. Use a synthetic engine oil, such as Mobil's Delvac 1, Gulf's Super Duty II, or Chevron's Sub-zero Fluid. Synthetics have much better flow properties at low temperatures. They also have greater oxidation stability (they can take the high heat of turbo-bearing lubrication. And they produce fewer deposits because they are more thermally stable. But synthetic oils do cost more - two or three times more. One additional point - maintain the air intake system. Since all mining is usually in a dusty environment, air filters should be changed regularly and intake systems should be checked for leaks. All intake air passes through the turbo. Any dirt or abrasives entering the turbo will damage the unit and shorten its life. While mining is a heavy duty business with severe operating conditions, you can get the life from your turbocharger that you expect by following a few simple steps: • equip the turbo with an oil-injection device to provide lubrication on start-up and shutdown; • change the oil and filters regularly; and • use the proper oil-synthetic, if possible.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Editor's note: This is the first of two articles on maintenance. Part two, "Effective maintenance downsizing techniques," will appear in the October issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Most mine managers are aware that the cost of maintenance rarely goes down unless work is done less often and with fewer people. Fewer people translates into downsizing and seldom means making maintenance more efficient. Even so, mines that have struggled unsuccessfully to improve maintenance and are now pressed to reduce maintenance costs may opt for downsizing. On the other hand, mines with an immediate need to reduce costs may be forced to downsize because they cannot wait for needed improvements to take effect. This can be bad news for maintenance. In any case, the mine must downsize correctly to ensure effective maintenance is sustained.

The underground industry has been forced to reconsider risk management sincethe introduction and implementation of the “Joint Code of Practice for Risk Management of Underground Works in the UK” published in 2003 and the subsequent international version published by the ‘International Tunneling Insurance Group’ (ITIG) in January 2006.What does this mean for major tunnel projects in the US and elsewhere? The discussion will highlight the implementation of the Codes to date, risk management principles embodied in the Codes and the use of risk registers as a projectmanagement tool and the management of risk.

"Longwall abutment loads are influenced by several factors, including depth of cover, pillar sizes, panel dimensions, geological setting, mining height, proximity to gob, intersection type, and size of the gob. How does proximity to the gob affect pillar loading and entry condition? Does the gob influence depend on whether the abutment load is a forward, side, or rear loading? Do non-typical bleeder entry systems follow the traditional front and side abutment loading and extent concepts? If not, will an improved understanding of the combined abutment extent warrant a change in pillar design or standing support in bleeder entries?This paper details observations made in the non-typical bleeder entries of a moderate depth longwall panel; specifically, it explores data collected from borehole pressure cells and roof extensometers, observations of the conditions of the entries, and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall extraction. The primary focus was the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced due to the extraction of the longwall panels. Due to the layout of the longwall panels and bleeder entries, the borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and roof extensometers did not show much change due to the advancing of the first longwall. However, they did show a noticeable increase due to the second longwall advancement, a maximum of about 4 MPa of pressure increase and 5 mm of roof deformation. The observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the first longwall panel extraction began to when the second longwall panel had been advanced more than 915 meters. Localized pillar spalling was observed on the corners of the pillars closest to the longwall gob as was an increase in water in the entries. In addition to the observations and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to validate modeling procedures against the monitoring results and evaluate the bleeder design. ITASCA Consulting Group’s FLAC3D numerical modeling software was used to evaluate the bleeder entries. The results of the models indicated only a minor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall panels. These models showed a much greater increase in stress due to the development of the gateroad and bleeder entries—about 80% development and 20% longwall extraction. The FLAC3D model showed very good correlation between modeled and expected gateroad loading during panel extraction. The front and side abutment extent modeled was very similar to observations from this and previous panels."

An experimental study on the oxidation of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), pyrite (FeS2), covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S) particles was conducted by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The oxygen concentration in the process gas was set to 40% and 70% (by volume) and a heating rate of 40°C/min was used. Response variables included the temperature of incipient reaction, the total exothermic heat of reaction, particle mass, morphology and mineralogy of the reacted particles. Based on the experimental data and phase stability calculations, reaction mechanisms were proposed to represent the behavior of the particles during oxidation. The reaction mechanisms were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of the oxidized particles and by thermochemical and mass balance calculations to reproduce the DSC and TGA data. Overall kinetic models were developed to represent the evolution of the exothermic heat of reaction as a function of time.

The wetting characteristics and water film stability at the talc surface have been studied, particularly the effect of polysaccharides such as guar gum, starch, and dextrin. Talc is a gangue mineral in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores, and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. Talc surfaces were investigated using surface analysis techniques including atomic force microscopy, high-speed video bubble attachment measurements, and wetting film stability measurements using a synchronized tri-wavelength reflection interferometry microscope (STRIM). In the presence of polysaccharides, there is a significant increase in bubble attachment time at the talc surface, but only a slight change in contact angle, which suggests that polysaccharide depression of talc is due primarily to the slow rate of bubble attachment and not due to a change in contact angle. The critical rupture thickness (hc) for a hydrophobic talc surface was found to be 56 nm, while the hydrophilic phlogopite surface of similar structure has an equilibrium film thickness (he) of 25 nm. At low polysaccharide concentrations, the wetting films formed on the talc surfaces were unstable, but at high concentrations the wetting films became stable with similar thickness values as the critical rupture thickness, and bubble attachment did not occur. However, it was found that the critical and equilibrium film thickness values do not change significantly with the polysaccharide type or concentration. The results from this research help us understand further details of film rupture and displacement during bubble attachment.

INTRODUCTION This report describes the inspection of parts of the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA)undertaken for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP)by Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc., (PB) in association with Montgomery Watson Engineers of New York, P.C. (MWH). Support for the inspection was provided by AFC Enterprises, Inc., under Construction Contract CRO-333, “WM-11 New Croton Aqueduct Rehabilitation and Inspection Program.” The scope of the inspection work under CRO-333 included assessing the condition of the 10.3 km (6.4 mile) long, pressurized section of NCA and inspection of shafts, head houses and blow-off structures in both the pressurized and gravity sections. The CRO-333 inspection continued investigation work begun under ContractCRO-196, which ran from 1993 to 1997. The CRO-333 inspections were conducted from November 2004 to September 2005. Background The New Croton Aqueduct was put into service in 1891 to deliver water from the Croton River Watershed in Westchester County to consumers in New York City. Figure 1 shows the location plan of Croton Water Supply System. The design flow into Jerome Park Reservoir was 12.7 m3/s (290 mgd) and into the135th Street Gate House, further south, was 10.9 m3/s (250 mgd). The NCA has been operated as a gravity conduit from Croton Lake to Gate House No. 1, just north of Jerome Park Reservoir, since its original construction. The length from Gate House No. 1to 135th Street, which includes a major siphon under the Harlem River, has been operated under pressure. Croton Lake gate house, the north end of the alignment lies at Station 4+75; Shaft 33, the south end of the alignment lies at Station 1628+05. The diameter of the tunnel is 3.2 m (10.5 ft) in the siphon and 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in the Bronx and Manhattan sections. The pressurized sections, constructed in rock, consist of a brick lining surrounded by a mortared and grouted rubble backing. Figure 2depicts a typical tunnel cross section. The increasing demand for pure aluminum and aluminum compounds of industrial quality from kaolinite ore cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria is one of the African countries endowed with abundant solid mineral resources that have not been sufficiently exploited to assist its indigenous industries. A wide array of applications of pure aluminum and its compounds are available, such as paper filling, refractories, adsorbent, catalysis, and paint additives. In this study, the upgrading of a Nigerian biotite-rich kaolinite ore by a hydrometallurgical route was investigated in oxalic acid media. During leaching studies, the effects of parameters including reaction temperature, lixiviant concentration and particle size on the extent of ore dissolution were examined. At optimal conditions (1.0 mol/L C2H2O4, 75 °C), 92.0% of the initial 10 g/L ore was reacted within 120 min. The dissolution curves from the shrinking core model were analyzed and found to conform to the assumption of surface diffusion reaction, and the calculated activation energy of 33.2 kJ/mol supported the proposed model. The unreacted product (~8.0%) analyzed by XRD was found to contain siliceous impurities and could serve as a valuable by-product for certain industries.

Unfortunately from 1991 through 1995, 44 miners were fatally injured in the stone industry. Of these 12 occurred at underground mines from a total work force of less than 2,000 miners. Nine of these 12 miners were fatally injured in falls of roof or rib. A safer environment for the miners can be achieved by evaluating the nature of the hazardous ground and by developing more efficient and effective ground control strategies. Roof and rib conditions in the underground stone industry were observed and assessed at 33 mines in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia [(Figure 1)]. Hazard assessment indicated that those ground failures occurring under moderate to substantial overburden (> 30 m [l00 ft]) were caused by stress concentrations and geologic structures. Ground failures near the surface are caused by solution (water) processes. Selection of the mining horizon and mine layout decisions tremendously influence ground stability.

INTRODUCTION The Brightwater conveyance system project in King County, Washington consists of constructing about 21 km (13 mile) of effluent and combined influent and effluent tunnels. The influent tunnels will collect sanitary sewerage from the service area and convey it to the new wastewater treatment plant (WTP) site at Route 9 in Woodinville, Snohomish County, Washington. The effluent tunnels will convey treated effluent from the WTP to an outfall at Puget Sound. The tunnels will be constructed primarily under residential areas, busy suburban roads and state highways. This 21 Km (13-mile) soft ground tunneling project faced many design challenges because of the geologic and hydrostatic conditions, long tunnel reaches, and large overburden depths. Boring depths typically varied from 45.7 M (150 ft) to 114 M(375 ft) with a maximum depth of 185.6 M (566 ft) deep. Conventional empirical methods for non-mountain terrain based on a 1:1 ratio of drilled footage per foot of tunnel bore (National Research Council, 1984) for evenly spaced borings provided a good start for the Phase 1 explorations. However a continuation of this approach with closer spacing was deemed inadequate by the geotechnical team for efficiently allocating geotechnical exploration resources for the final design. This paper presents a rational approach that was used to evaluate the value of a particular geotechnical exploration boring, pump test or other in-situ test. The method of analysis, which was initially developed for rock tunnels (Einstein et al., 1978), was modified for the Brightwater project. The method considers the potential construction cost risks resulting from variable geologic conditions, the cost and reliability of the geotechnical exploration and the earned value (cost risk reduction) of performing the geotechnical exploration. According to the previous research, it is found that the thickness of cover is mostly less than 100 m for highwall mining system. However, for most of the Chinese surface coal mines, the mining depth is over 150 m; on the other hand, the shovel-truck is the most common mining technology. As a result, a lot of residual coal will be remained around end-walls. Considering these facts, the calculated methodology of highwall mining system under thick cover is presented in this paper. Meanwhile, numerical simulation of highwall mining system under thick cover was carried out. The outcome shows that the calculated methodology for pillar stability of highwall mining system under thick cover presented in this paper is acceptable. In other words, the highwall mining system is feasible to extract the residual coal around end-walls in Chinese surface coal mines. Thus, not only coal recovery ratio can be improved, but also can increase the production life of surface coal mines in China.

The performance of a rotating fixed bed reactor in recovering copper from industrial waste solutions by cementation is studied under various conditions. The rotating fixed bed is made of stacked woven steel screens to take advantage of two features of screens: the ability to present large area per unit volume and their ability to promote high turbulence. Variables studied are initial CuSO4 concentration, bed rotation speed, mesh number of the screens and bed thickness. The presence of baffles was found to increase the rate of cementation. The data were correlated by a dimensionless mass transfer correlation suitable for the design and operation of large scale cementation reactors.

In Alaska?s southwest corner, in the Bristol Bay region, 476 holes have been drilled to help define the size of the Pebble Project. The results indicate that the deposit holds close to 32 Mt (72 billion lbs) of copper and 2.9 Gt (94 million oz) of gold. The Pebble Partnership, an Alaskan limited partnership of Anglo American and Northern Dynasty Minerals, owns the project that consists of two world-class mineral deposits. Currently in the prefeasibility and prepermitting stage of development, the Pebble Project is one of the largest and highest profile exploration projects in North America. History The Pebble West Project was originally discovered in 1988 by Cominco (now Teck Cominco). Drilling programs in 1997 defined a near-surface mineral deposit of 1 Gt (1.01 billion st). Minerals found included copper, gold and molybdenum. Northern Dynasty Minerals acquired the property in 2001 and, by 2005, it had confirmed a measured and indicated resource of 4.1 Gt (4.5 billion st) containing 1.2 kt (42.1 million oz) of gold, 11.2 Mt (24.7 billion lbs) of copper and 612 kt (1.35 billion lbs) of molybdenum and additional silver. By September 2005, Pebble East, a deeper, but richer deposit had been found. Drill data by the end of 2005 confirmed a 3.4-Gt (3.7-billion st) inferred resource containing 19 Mt (42.6 billion lbs) of copper, 1.2 Mt (39.6 million oz) of gold and 1.2 Mt (2.7 billion lbs) of molybdenum.

Traditionally, the choice amongst different upgrading techniques or in finding the optimum operating conditions for a given upgrading technology depends on whether one is looking at the grade or the recovery of the valuable mineral in the concentrate. In fact, the conclusions are not usually the same. This is because the best technique or optimum operating conditions for the highest grade are not the same as the conditions to achieve the maxi-mum recovery. Therefore, a unique measure that takes into consideration both grade and recovery is urgently needed. Finding such a measure is the objective of this paper. A proposed measure provides a selectivity index in the range of 0 to 1, where 0 is no selectivity and 1 is ideal selectivity. The index can be obtained by plotting the so-called Fuerstenau upgrading curve, which relates the recoveries of the components in products of separation and a running regression applying a one-parameter equation. The measure was applied to assess the selectivity of selective flocculation under different operating conditions when used as a sensitive upgrading technique for ultrafine ground ores. After applying the proposed selectivity measure in the case of the selective flocculation of ultrafine Egyptian iron ore without the addition of cations, it was found that the optimum conditions are pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 0.4 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.55. With the addition of cations, the optimum conditions were found to be pH 11, 1 kg/t sodium silicate and 2 kg/t potato starch with a selectivity index of 0.65. It should be noted that determining these optimum conditions using the traditional grade or recovery measures was highly ambiguous.
