The mining industry, like most other industries, has had a difficult couple of years. What are your thoughts on the industry?s direction in the next few years? I am bullish on our industry. There is no question in my mind that the quality of life we enjoy today is largely a result of our past successes in the minerals and mining sector. I am equally certain that the sustainability of that quality of life and the aspirations of the rest of the world to attain that same level of lifestyle will depend hugely on our future successes and will be the driver for our industry to continue to excel and prosper. Surely, there are going to be challenges along the way. These challenges are not only from the public, regulators and various governing bodies, but also from our industry?s own self regulating efforts. However, we have demonstrated throughout the past several decades that we have the capability to meet these challenges head on and come out ahead.

When it comes to processing industries, speed matters. More precisely, the faster/greater the throughput of finished product out the door, the more quickly money can flow back into the corporate coffers. In this quest for greater output, no processor can afford any weak links in the chain. Especially in the case of bulk solids operations, any one piece of equipment that slows the process down jeopardizes the profitability of the entire plant. However, one clay processor uncorked a pre-existing bottleneck by replacing its outdated separating equipment with a new design that immediately improved output.

Accurate prediction of gold (or other metal) production from a heap leach operation is essential to the economic vitality of any such operation. However, this is also one of the most challenging issues facing managers of these facilities. Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the Cost Approach category for Real Property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves, and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties.

Mining Engineering education is in trouble, if not in crisis. The most visible signs are the decrease in the number of programs that offer the degree, and the continued difficulties in attracting students to the discipline. Unless these trends are reversed, the future of the profession is uncertain, at best. Remedies have been proposed, and some are drastic. They range from consolidating mining engineering education into one or two national schools, to cooperative regional programs, to distance education programs, and to proposals to limit mining engineering to a graduate degree or specialization only. These alternatives deserve serious attention and merit discussion. I hope that one alternative that will remain on the table is the classical and traditional “School of Mines”. A reasonable number of such schools are needed to provide the educational diversity and the critical mass to maintain accreditation and professional registration for their graduates. Most importantly, such an approach is most likely to assure the continued existence of mining engineering as a profession. It also provides the best educational framework to teach mining engineers. However, such Schools are vulnerable, highly susceptible to university budget pressures, and probably can survive only with strong external support.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13-km (8-mile) overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is a conventional three-roller, 35 degree trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design resulted in a 5.4-m/sec (17.7-ft/sec) belt speed, 1,000 mm- (40 in.-) belt width to convey 1.35 kt/h (1,490 stph) and 7 Mt/a (7.7 million stpy) of coal. Despite a high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 m/sec (21 ft/sec) in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput in-crease. In 2002, a new low loss ST2100 1,100 mm- (43 in.-) wide belt replaced the ST2250 that was due to be changed-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to increase the OLC capacity to 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy). Upgrading the OLC by increasing the belt speed was the lowest capital option. Increasing belt width and/or modifying the trough angle to have larger cross sectional area was not an economical option because it would require expensive changes and significant down time of the OLC. To achieve 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy), the belt speed had to be increased to 8.5 m/sec (28 ft/sec). Although such high belt speed looked feasible, there was no information at that time of other OLC operating at such high speed. There was a risk that the conveyor would not operate safely and reliably at higher speeds. This risk was escalated by the fact there was no facility to lower or fine-tune the belt speed once the higher belt speed was implemented.

An environmental management system (EMS) is a key part of a company?s environmental stewardship. Procedures and practices to continually improve environmental performance can provide great benefits in operating the company. Managing site environmental quality data is a key component of this. An environmental data management system (EDMS) is an important element of the EMS for mining and other projects, providing project staff with the information that they need to make decisions that can have a significant impact on public health. Improvements in computers, data communications, and transfer formats have made it much easier to implement an integrated EDMS program for gathering, managing, selecting, and displaying data from the field and the lab. Software now lets users define sampling plans, create files for field data entry, and print Chains of Custody. Laptop and handheld computers facilitate field data entry and may provide automated communication back to the office. Most labs can now create usable electronic data deliverables. QC checks and limit comparisons can be largely automated. The result is organized data that can be efficiently used for reporting, graphing, and mapping, to better understand project issues.

Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME's future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME's Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. Research is currently being conducted at the Colorado School of Mines in the use of high-pressure water for scaling down loose rocks in underground mine openings. In addition to improved miner safety, the adhesion strength of shotcrete applied to rock surfaces treated with high-pressure water is also increased significantly resulting in improved overall support capabilities of the shotcrete layer. Test results show an increase in adhesion strength by a factor of four on a concrete test wall cleaned with water at 21 Mpa (3000 psi) as compared to a surface cleaned at 0.7 Mpa (100 psi).

This paper describes the development of a life of mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world?s largest known sedimentary Copper-Cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity constrained process facility. This paper discusses the main scheduling objectives and constraints, data pre-processing as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach, and results and conclusions.

All parameters influencing the decision for selection of a suitable extraction method were first selected as the base of this study. Then these parameters were categorized in two main groups. The first group of the parameters includes ?geomechanical and inherent characteristics of the dimension stones? such as hardness, RQD, compressive strength, joints plane orientation and spacing, and water content. The second group was named ?technical and economical parameters associated with the investor?s objectives? like for example extraction capacity (production rate), blocks recovery, mechanization, capital investment and operational costs. Finally, the influences of all mentioned parameters on the selection of the most applicable extraction methods have been assessed and discussed.

Lebanon used a TBM for the firsttime to excavate a tunnel in the country. A main beam TBM, built in 1979, bored the 3.8 m (12.5-ft) diameter by 4,020 m (2.5-miles) Madiq Tunnel. The TBM bored through karstic terrain of dolomitic limestone, limestone and marly-limestone rock having near horizontal beds with more than twelve faults crossing the axis of the tunnel. The TBM also encountered more than six major karst features, filled with various combinations of boulders, clay, void space and water. The excavation through these collapsed-breccia zones drastically slowed the TBM?s progress. When complete, which the Madiq Tunnel is a part, the Kesrouane Water Project along the coast will bring fresh and irrigation waters to the parched and heavily populated region north of Beirut. The paper will describe the tunnel geologic features, karst genius, TBM upgrades and performance, and TBM/karst difficult situations

At the present time, whether an electric utility uses high-sulfur coal is largely determined by geographical location, clean air legislation, and the age of the power plant. Acid rain legislation may well be the new force to change the use of high-sulfur coal. A number of coal papers were presented at the SME Fall Meeting in St. Louis, MO, Sept. 1986. These papers discussed high-sulfur coal in relation to its economics, trends and prospects, value of cleaned coal, and coal-cleaning technology. The Clean Air Act of 1970 required the reduction of SO, emissions from most stationary electric-generating plant to 0.5 kg (1.2 lbs) SO2, per million Btu of heat input. It was possible for many plants to utilize lower-sulfur coal or a mixture of high-sulfur and low-sulfur coal to meet this emission requirement. This 1970 act greatly increased the use of low-sulfur western coal. The 1978 amendment to the Clean Air Act required all new plants to use Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) to meet a requirement of 70% reduction of potential SO2 emissions to 0.3 kg (0.6 lb) SO2 per million Btu of heat input. With the requirement to use FGD, there was little or no demand for low-sulfur western coal in new eastern power plants. If' new acid rain legislation is enacted, it likely will require sizeable reductions in SO2, emissions by existing coal users. There might then be a shift to greater use of low-sulfur coals. The low-sulfur coals could come from either western or eastern mines or from cleaned eastern coals. Economics will dictate the approach older power plants will take to meet new regulationsuse FGD or low-sulfur coal. Coal use for electric power generation has changed from 1970 to 1985. Table 1, (Land, preprint 86-333) shows the change. The table shows that in 1985, US utilities used about 255 Mt (280 million st) of high-sulfur coal. Some 45 to 54 Mt (50 to 60 million st) of high-sulfur coal is being used in plants equipped with FGD and most of this use is in eastern states. This leaves 200 to 209 Mt/a (220 to 230 million st) of high-sulfur coal being used without FGD treatment. These plants are at risk if acid rain legislation is passed. Most of these plants are in the east and are more difficult to supply with low-sulfur coal. Estimates range from $20 to $30 billion capital investment and from $5 to $9 billion dollars per year operating costs to reduce SO2, emissions from those old medium-to-high-sulfur coal-burning plants. G. W. Land, (preprint 86-333), also presents tables relating to power generating costs and coal types. The author's tables are extracted from Land's tables IV and V. Table 2 here presents costs for a new plant. This includes the impact of different heat rates, fuel costs, fuel qualities, operating and maintenance costs, labor costs, and waste disposal costs. Table 3 compares estimated costs to retrofit an older plant with a limestone scrubber versus switching the same plant to low-sulfur eastern or western coal. Costs of switching include upgrading the electrostatic precipitator and - with western coal - costs of derating. Bhagwat, (preprint 86-325), details the trends in high-sulfur coal markets from 1974 to 1984. He also gives some prospects for high-sulfur coal markets, 1984 to 1994. The prospect depends mostly on whether acid rain legislation is enacted. By 1994, if New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) continue to be applied, high-sulfur coal demand from six mid-west and eastern states is expected to increase by 27 Mt (30 million st). • L. A. M.S. Azun I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author's conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey's lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author's paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, I may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [ ] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [ ] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. T ve B, in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semi-variogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. In 1978, Congress established a series of mineral institutes for a limited time to assist financially in mineral industry education and research. Later, education and research were separated, establishing generic institutes for specialized research that transferred the former research budget from the base mineral institutes program. One of the generic institutes is the Mine Systems Design and Ground Control (MSDGC). It provides for research funding specifically for mining. Other parallel generic institutes were established in pyrometallurgy, comminution, waste management, etc. MSDGC was established at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University(VPI). The founding group included the University of Alabama, University of Kentucky, University of Nevada Reno, University of Idaho and University of Alaska reporting through VPI to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Congress. Other universities also participated on an ad hoc basis.

Canadian mining giant Teck Resources Ltd. will be the exclusive supplier of the metals used in the production of the more than 1,000 medals to be awarded at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Teck, the diversified resource company headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., is providing 2.05 kg (4.5 lbs) of gold, 1,950 kg (4,300 lbs) of silver and 903 kg (2,000 lbs) of copper sourced from its operations around the world. In addition to the raw materials mines, this year?s medals will make Olympic history as they will be the first to contain metals recovered from processing the circuit boards from end-of-life electronics (e-waste) that would have otherwise been destined for a landfill. After mining or production through a variety of smelting and recovery processes, each metal has been refined to enhance the metal purity.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

Condition monitoring is a viable troubleshooting practice among many industries to extend equipment performance, minimize unplanned downtime, reduce maintenance and repair time and costs, and increase related aspects of plant safety. But obstacles abound for mining, mineral-processing and cement operations striving to implement the technologies. Harsh machine environments can muddy efforts. High vibration in machinery can interfere with wide-spread rollout. Staff expertise or skills may be lacking. And costs may be prohibitive. Fault detection has emerged as a practical and cost-effective solution to identify process and machinery faults before failure interrupts productivity or jeopardizes worker safety. Fault detection can be a stand-alone system or connected to plant automation.

Goldcorp Inc. has mining operations and exploration projects throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras; as well as partnerships in Argentina and the Dominican Republic. In rural areas of developing countries it is very common to have mining operations surrounded by diverse communities consisting of people with limited, or no formal education. This is fertile ground for anti-mining NGOs to cultivate. The limited educational backgrounds of the people, coupled with a company desire to maintain a low profile can lead to a problematic lack of trust between the local communities and the mining company. As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, Goldcorp has implemented various programs to build trust at these operations, as well as incorporating this policy into any new projects prior to commencement of operations. This paper is intended to describe two initiatives that have shown positive results for both the communities and the Marlin Mine.
