Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

The Belle Eldridge Mine is an inactive lead-zinc mine in Spruce Gulch south of Deadwood, South Dakota. Acidic mine drainage (AMD) produced at the site drains into Spruce Creek, a tributary of Whitewood Creek. The site is on U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. Extensive fieldwork was done at the Belle Eldridge Mine through the cooperation of the BLM and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The site was extensively mapped to identify physical and environmental hazards such as tailings, waste rock, collapsed buildings, adits and workings. An exhaustive search of the historical records of the Belle Eldridge Mine was conducted. Maps of the under-ground workings of the Belle Eldridge dating from the 1930’s and 1940’s were found. The maps were used to correlate currently collapsed features to old adits and tunnels. Using hand corers and a portable drill rig, waste rock, tailings and soil core samples were collected and depth to bedrock was determined and the total volume of waste and tailings pile were determined. Related work examined the hydrology of the site. The site is very complex hydrogeologically. Numerous underground and surface workings and tunnels add to the complexity. Several seeps are located at the site, one of which is producing AMD. Recharge to the site was studied, and a 100-year flood plain map was produced.

Its applications include designing steel mills, planning space shota, or even developing ways to beat the casinos in Las Vegas. Open pit copper mines in Arizona have found themselves in a tangled web of changing rules, regulations, and guidance documents regarding storm water and process water discharges. Dry coal separation technology has particular advantages in the applications in arid and cold regions, or low rank coal separation. The hazardous pollutants in low rank coals can not be efficiently removed by conventional wet coal separation processes because a considerable amount of porose and easily friable low rank coals suffer serious particle size degradation problems in water. In this paper, a novel dry coal separation method with a vibrated air-fluidized bed of magnetic fly ash and magnetite is put forward for dry coal beneficiation. The magnetic fly ash used in this study was derived from fly ash obtained as a byproduct of coal combustion. The vibration?s effect on the uniformity and stability of a magnetic fly ash air-fluidized bed was studied. The 6×0.5 mm dry coal separation results with a vibrated air-fluidized bed of magnetic fly ash and magnetite showed that the probable error E value of separation is 0.06-0.08 t/m3.

We present a review of research and development for coal based clean energy systems aiming for zero emissions to the atmosphere. These systems can utilize all kinds of coal or other solid carbon sources such as tar sands as well as liquid hydrocarbons. The chemical energy of carbon is transferred to hydrogen and used in power generation, in fuel cells, or hydrogen combusting turbines. The waste products of these future power-generating systems are ash, sulfur compounds and CO2. We also summarize current and developing technologies for processing of CO2to produce mineral carbonates for permanent disposal, and associated byproducts.

Enhanced gravity separation appears to be one of the most promising methods for processing all types of <200-µm coal feeds and tailings. Systems based on this technology are reviewed, and the results of investigations based on C900 Multi-Gravity Separator tests conducted to assess the treatment of <200-µm, extremely difficult-to-wash coal settling pond tailings are presented. Multi-Gravity Separator processing tests of ultra-fine tailings with a high clay particle size content (22.6% <10 µm and 60.1% <40 µm) and a 69.56% ash content show that this material can be effectively treated after desliming (<10 µm) of clay-size particles to produce a coal with a 20.6% ash at a separator combustible material recovery of 69.3%. Desliming is shown to be critical in reducing coal ash content and combustible material recovery. Similar improvements are anticipated in the recovery and separation pro-cesses for other enhanced gravity separation systems from the desliming of feeds. Although not a conventional form of treating Multi-Gravity Separator data, the existence of well-defined polynomial relationships based on the product of drum shake amplitude and shake frequency relative to product coal recovery, product ash content and yields at varying wash water flows is demonstrated. Low-amplitude and intermediate- to high-frequency bed agitation are shown to produce optimum ash reduction results.

Clean Diesels fuel-borne catalyst, Platinum Plus, helps improve fuel economy for all engines up to 10 percent while reducing particulate emissions by up to 25 percent. When used with a simple diesel oxidation catalyst, particulate emissions can be reduced by 30 to 50 percent. The use of Platinum Plus enhances combustion in the cylinder, burning fuel more completely. This reduces CO2 and other greenhouse gases and lowers total operating costs by improving fuel economy.

The current state of the copper industry was the topic of discussion at the Copper 99 — Cobre 99conference held Oct. 10 to 13, 1999, in Phoenix, AZ. More than 700 copper-industry engineers, executives, consultants, academics, vendors and other interested parties attended. This successful and well-organized conference was the fourth in a series of international conferences devoted to the mineral processing and extractive metallurgy of copper. The 1999 meeting marked the first time that the conference was held in the United States. The meeting was co-organized by the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS); the Chilean Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMCH) and the Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum(CIM). The meeting was also sponsored by The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration Inc.

Introduction A staccato beat rings out across the Australian bush. The stamps are at work, slowly pulverizing gold-bearing ore for a patient, grizzled prospector. This is the State Battery near Marvel Loch, a tiny 22.6-t/d (25-stpd) capacity gold plant operated by the Western Australia government. It is one of many such plants located in remote corners of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. They are miniature custom mills operated for the benefit of prospectors and small mine operators. These state batteries are so called because they are operated by state governments and because the principal item of machinery in the plants are stamp batteries. They are fascinating anachronisms - throwbacks to times past, a century ago, to the hard and heady existence of gold rush days. Marvel Loch plant Typical of these operations, and perhaps a trifle more sophisticated than most, is the plant near Marvel Loch, a small center for mining and farming about 400 km (250 miles) due east of Perth. Marvel Loch. The name evokes visions of a pristine lake set in a cool, green, misty glen of the Scottish highlands. Actually, it is probably a hot, dry salt pan somewhere nearby. Just where the "loch" is difficult to discern. There is no sign of it on the map.

The extraction of thorium from industrial radioactive wastewaters discharged from Rare Earth (RE) plants was studied by the liquid membrane emulsion technique using P507- Span80-sulphonating kerosene-HCl. The emulsion conditions, the technological factors such as ratios of oil to the internal aqueous phase and water to emulsion, and the extraction time etc. were investigated.

The introduction of computer technology to the mining industry has produced many benefits for the mining engineer. The most significant is the dramatic increase in productivity realized by the individual user. This is important during times of competitive market conditions. Software for the minerals and energy industries has evolved substantially over the past decade. But even today it remains difficult to find a system that features the flexibility and integration capabilities to effectively (and cost-effectively) handle the needs of professionals in each phase of the mining industry - from exploration to reclamation. Several national software developers are now addressing this challenge. One Denver-based company, MINEsoft Ltd., offers a software package that is currently being used in each phase of the mining industry. The basic technology used in MINEsoft&apos;s database management system was developed in the 1960s. But during these early years of the computer industry, most of the technology was available only on mainframe computers, and then only as separate entities. MINEsoft&apos;s system unifies these various systems in one package that can be used on most computers manufactured today. Database Management System TECHBASE is a flexible, integrated database management system designed specifically for technical applications. The system features a database manager with no practical limit to the amount of data it can store, retrieve, and manipulate, according to the company. TECHBASE in¬cludes Applications Packages (TAPs) designed to meet the needs of professionals in a host of industries. Clients use the TECH BASE system to prepare many reports, including important EPA information. The package reduces data to a manageable level and enables users to increase productivity with a smaller staff. Mining engineers no longer need to do things by hand. What used to be a day&apos;s work can be accomplished in an hour or two. Exploration "Using the TECHBASE system to generate maps has probably saved us the expense of three or four draftsmen," says Ralph Fitch, regional manager and senior staff geologist with Chevron Resources in Portland, ME. "The system has great flexibility. You can treat it much like a spreadsheet. If you are halfway through with a particular project, the system allows you to add fields and calculations with ease but without starting over." Fitch uses TECHBASE for the "straightforward" plotting of results and generation of geochemical and geophysical profiles. "In exploration," he says, "these are the two key elements ... the generation of maps and data profiles. The system allows you to plot as many elements and variables in these areas that you like." Other aspects are important, too, says Fitch, including drill hole sections. "We use all the basic capabilities the system provides in the complete package," he explains. The Niblack polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits are located on Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska, approximately 50 km southwest of Ketchikan. The property hosts a number of polymetallic volcanogenic sulfide occurrences within the folded Lookout rhyolite volcanic succession. The Lookout deposit is the primary focus of current resource delineation and contains an indicated resource of 4,136,000 tonnes at 1.13% Cu, 2.32 g/t Au, 2.27% Zn, 38.70 g/t Ag and an inferred resource of 1,736,000 tonnes at 1.09% Cu, 1.77 g/t Au, 2.02% Zn, and 25.52 g/t Ag as of March 2011. Sulfide mineralization is interpreted to have formed sub-seafloor, within permeable felsic fragmental volcanic rocks. Sulfide minerals of economic interest include chalcopyrite and Fe-poor, Zn-rich sphalerite. Of considerable importance, the Lookout deposit contains elevated gold that occurs as inclusions within the base metal sulfides.

"Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

However, stability in the highwalls is always a major safety concern during such mining. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that highwall mining operators follow ground control plans that specify the pillar sizes necessary to prevent collapse that would threaten highwall stability.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity in the areas in which we operate. As a member of the ICMM, FCX is committed to implement the 10 Sustainable Development (SD) Principles throughout our business. FCX is also a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit coalition dedicated to protecting and enhancing wildl ife habitat. In alignment with ICMM SD Principle 7 and our Environmental Policy, FCX has set a performance goal to prepare a biodiversity inventory in 2010 and land management plan by end of 2011 for all active mining sites. In 2010 FCX established a Biodiversity Task Force to assist sites in biodiversity management; optimize use of resources around the globe; implement FCX goals and targets; and align biodiversity programs with ICMM principles and guidance. The task force consists of Environment and SD Department management, scientists and engineers from FCX sites, and WHC staff. The Task Force recently issued a biodiversity inventory guidance document to set expectations and provide consistency across the sites when developing a biodiversity inventory and land management plan.

The mine scheduling process defines a mining sequence across the life of the mine and stipulates the amount of ore, waste, and specific blocks to be mined each year so that the highest economic return can be obtained under a number of constraints. There are a number of mine scheduling software packages available. Each claims to be the best scheduler by maximizing Net Present Value (NPV) or by minimizing overall mining costs. These mine scheduling programs follow different procedures and scheduling philosophies based on either mathematical or heuristic principles. There was no study in which the mine production scheduling procedures applied by these packages were discussed and compared. This paper evaluates four open pit mine scheduling programs recently developed and compares them in order to determine if significant differences exist among them. The same input data, which consist of a 3-D block model, an economic set of parameters, and the initial surface topography for a operating copper mine in Southern Peru, was used to test each technique. The following programs were investigated with respect to their ability to optimize the NPV for the case study. 1) M821V1 Scheduler by Mintec; 2) NPV Scheduler by Earthworks; 3) Milawa Scheduler by Whittle Programming; and, 4) Fundamental Tree Scheduling Method (FTSM) developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The results from this case study demonstrate that the scheduling software packages, Mintec, Earthworks, and Whittle obtained similar NPV’s, while FTSM scheduler gave a six percent higher NPV than the other schedulers.

Nowadays, stakeholders have a strong say to the enforcement of best practices by mining and quarrying companies. In most cases there is a direct relationship between sustainable development principles and best practices. Mining companies try to apply best practices in order to sustain their operation without lost time and effort to litigation, and other obstacles. However, when and where there is a lack of state or regional mineral policy, or when the mineral policy is fragmented and touching on conflicting laws, mining operations may be subject to additional administrative hassles, and, thus, operators feel threatened and tend to apply best practices loosely. This paper argues that the only way that mining and minerals operations can be a source of development is to ensure that they are working within the framework of sustainable development. Furthermore, in order to follow the paradigm of sustainable development they would need to be guided by a regional, national or even transnational (i.e. European) minerals policy.

Coal production in the United States in 2007 totaled 1.03 Gt (1,145.6 million st), according to preliminary data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Ta-ble 1). This is a decrease of 1.5 percent, or 15.6 Mt (17.2 million st) from the 2006 record level of 1.05 Gt (1,162.7 million st). Although coal production declined in 2007, U.S. total coal consumption increased for the year. Coal consumption in 2007 in the electric power sector was higher by 1.9 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 1.1 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 5 percent. (Note: all percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2007, while coal imports remained at about the same level. Total coal stocks increased slightly during the year, as some consumers continued to rebuild their stockpiles that had been seriously depleted in 2005 due to transportation issues. The growth in coal consumption during the year was primarily a result of the weather-related increases in the demand for electricity in 2007. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers) in the United States grew in 2007. Coal-based generation also increased, resulting in a 17.9-Mt (19.8-million-st) increase in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in the nonelectricity sector decreased by 3.8 percent to 74.7 Mt (82.4 million st). In the international markets in 2007, U.S. coal exports increased to levels not seen in recent years while coal imports were mostly static. U.S. coal exports totaled 53.7 Mt (59.2 million st), an increase of 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st) above 2006. Coal imports in 2007 ended the year at 32.9 Mt (36.3 million st), 91 kt (100,000 st) higher than in 2006. Coal prices in 2007 were split, with most domestic prices higher for the year while the international prices were overall lower. Most innovations in the mining and processing industries have come from the need to produce more for less. Extracting minerals from the ground is expensive. And it is a constant struggle for mine operators to maintain the line between profitability and loss. The same holds for equipment suppliers. To maintain competitiveness, mining equipment manufacturers are building their machines with an eye to what the customer needs. Equipment makers know that if they do not supply machines that are productive and cost efficient, their competitors will. The result has been that the mining industry can now produce more ore with fewer people and more productive equipment. But, for all of the advances made in equipment, mine operators still demand machines that produce even more, are safer for workers and the environment, require less maintenance and can do the job at lower costs. And equipment manufacturers keep responding with larger, smarter and more technologically advanced machines.
