A number of state and federal agencies are calling for development of aquatic life criteria for conductivity. These aquatic life criteria or ?benchmarks? are based on observed correlations between conductivity and benthic macroinvertebrate community composition, generally measured by composite metrics or indices. However, development of an aquatic life criterion for a composite variable like conductivity is made difficult by a number of factors. Based on a database from West Virginia, observed patterns of invertebrate community composition versus conductivity may instead be related to a combination of abiotic (e.g., ionic composition, habitat) and biotic (e.g., life history, colonization potential) factors. Many benthic invertebrate taxa also do not respond to increasing conductivity in a consistent relationship. Many states have determined that a composite variable, like conductivity or TDS, is not appropriate for criteria development, as many studies have shown that toxicity varies as a function of ion composition and can be mitigated by elevated hardness. We conclude that the relationships between conductivity and changes in benthic macroinvertebrate community composition are neither strong nor reliable enough to warrant derivation of a criterion based solely on conductivity.

The mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources. However, consolidations in the mining and mining service industries, along with a generational departure of experienced industry professionals, is challenging today’s mining companies. These challenges are not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies. They oftentimes lack for operating properties to draw experienced professionals from. Also, juniors have to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. This article discusses some strategies developed by Anatolia Minerals Development (Anatolia) in developing its Çöpler gold project in central Turkey.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County constructs twin Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnels through cohesive soils and rock beneath the Allegheny River and a narrow city street in Pittsburgh, PA. The tunnel alignment includes an historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and an office building constructed directly over the alignment during the design of the tunnel sections. This paper provides an overview and update of the general site conditions, TBM tunnel design, and support of excavation for the TBM launching pit. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans are also discussed.

Deep sewer tunnels are required to meet future growth demands of the City of Austin?s down-town redevelopment. The tunnel is 18,000 ft long and varies in finished diameter from 54 inches to 96 inches. The tunnel crosses under Austin?s Town Lake three times and there are four main work shaft sites. Geology, groundwater, foundations, downtown redevelopment, and an active, healthy community put significant constraints on the design. This paper discusses a major underground project for downtown Austin and discusses the risk considerations and the opportunities the design team took toward optimizing the project design for the construction phase.

Independent natural resource Valuers are an essential link between miners and mineral explorers on the one hand and the finance industry on the other. Investors (and regulators) expect the mining and financial industries to be vigilant against the use of inappropriate methodology or use of illogical steps within the chosen valuation method. The Australian Corporations Law generally requires an Independent Expert Report to support mergers and takeovers (as well as for capital raising activities). The introduction of the VALMIN Code (1998) by The Australasian Institute of Mining as Metallurgy, has meant that such Reports, when prepared in compliance with it, are now much more comprehensible and reliable than before. This is because the key requirements of the Code are for transparency and materiality in the Technical Assessment and Valuation Reports prepared in connection with the transaction involved. Transparency is particularly important because it allows the reader to identify and understand the assumptions made to derive a value and to then form a view as to the reasonableness of the result. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Where the reasoning is patently illogical or the inputs are chosen to achieve a particular result, the estimated value must be viewed as virtually worthless. Experience, qualifications, competence and repute are the hallmarks of a professional technical auditor and valuer.

Information gathered while studying geological parameters that govern fine gold deposition in the a1luvial environment can be applied to the technological development and selection of fine gold recovery systems. It is recognized that substantial gold losses occur in the minus 1.5 mn (minus 12 mesh) fraction using conventional sluicing systems. Within the past two decades much attention has been given the design and efficiency of these thick bed concentrators. Studies and comparisons drew information from several foreign and domestic placer operations. These studies concentrated on: 1) the physical and chemical properties of alluvial gold 2) the parameters that control fine gold deposition 3) the geometrical form, components and general working structure of conventional sluicing systems 4) the physical properties which contribute to the overall efficiency of a sluice system 5) the comparison of three major styles of conventional sluicing systems. A dramatic improvement regarding fine gold recovery and water quality was observed when using modern multiple-channel sluicing systems in place of conventional single-channel sluicing systems.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system is an internationally recognized classification system that can be used for preliminary ground control design. The RMR system assigns quantifiable values to predefined classified parameters of a rock mass. Assigning a single value rather than a range to each parameter is a source of uncertainty, however, assigning a single value can be useful for further studies related to RMR ratings. Fuzzy systems are being used in an increasing number of application areas where linguistic rules are used to describe the system. In past decades, fuzzy systems have been successfully used in geotechnical and mining engineering problems to cope with uncertain data as well as with vagueness. In such scenarios, linguistic rules and rating-based classification of rock masses have always been questionable. The objective of this study is to apply fuzzy set theory to the RMR classification system. The fuzzy system proposed in this study is specified for weak and very weak rock masses (RMR<50) based on data collected from Nevada gold mines where 68% of RMR data is in the ?poor? and ?very poor? classes. In this approach, a Mamdani fuzzy algorithm has been constructed to evaluate basic RMR89 rating for the ?wet condition.? Comparison between basic RMR89 and fuzzy RMR shows the fuzzy RMR system is valid to predict RMR from the discrete rating of each input parameter.

Project Description The Ok Tedi Mine is located approximately 18 km east of the Papua and New Guinea-Indonesia border, on the southernmost extremity of the Star Mountains Range, it is situated almost equidistant from the north and south coastlines. The headwaters of the Fly River system are in the Star Mountains. The open pit mining activities are on Mt Fubilan with a (pre-mining) elevation of 2,095 metres (6,871 Feet) in the Western Province. The mine is in an area characterised by very steep topography and dense tropical rainforest. The pit has been free draining but will cease to be so in the first quarter of 2009. Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) required a drainage tunnel to be driven under the mine, if possible before free drainage was no longer possible. The tunnel was required to be at least 5 m in diameter and 4,200 m (13,776 ft) long, with a possible extension of 1,100 m (3,608 Feet) if the mine decided it was required for additional drainage and underground exploration. The tunnel is being driven up grade at 0.67%, and will be connected to the pit by the raising boring of two 1.1 m (3 Ft. 6 In.) diameter shafts from the tunnel level 250 m (820 Feet) below to the pit. In Tabubil, the adjacent township at an elevation of 640 m (2,100 feet), air temperatures range from a mean at night of 20 (68°F) degrees centigrade to a daytime aver-age of 27 (81°F) degrees. Extremes of 12 and 39 (54°F?102°F) degrees centigrade have been recorded. Rain falls, on average, 339 days each year and totals 8,000 mm (315 inches), and have been known to approach 12,000 mm (472 inches) making the area one of the wettest places on earth. The portal site is at an elevation of 1,200 m or 4,000 ft and the air temperatures are a little cooler and the rainfall a little greater. Access to the mine is by air for personnel and light freight and by ship for heavier goods and materials. The port is at Kiunga on the Fly River 153 km from the portal site. The program for the project was tight, the decision to purchase the required TBM was made in July 2007 and the final decision to go ahead with the construction of the tunnel was made in November 2007.

One of the results of the Earth summit (The United Nations Conference) on Environment and Development - UNDP is the statement of forest principles. Others include: the Rio Declaration which is that the human beings are entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature; Agenda 21-for achieving sustainable development in the 21st century; the convention on biological diversity and the frame work convention on climate change. In the preservation of the biological diversity, Government at various levels took series of steps such as legislation, establishment of forest reserves including strict nature reserves, Forest guards, afforestation projects and others. Omo Forest Reserves is one of the Forest reserves owned by the Ogun state Government of Nigeria. It houses the Omo Biosphere Reserve (that is Strict Nature Reserve of International standard). This biosphere reserve is surrounded by buffer zones, which are meant to serves as protection for the biosphere reserves against encroachments. This study showed that the richest plot in term of species composition (that is plot 15 with the species frequency of 123) is almost the least diverse (with Simpson diversity index of 0.9127 which is 0.0238 higher than the least). It could also be established from this study that the diameter size class of trees with the highest frequencies are the lower size classes (5cm-10cm and 10cm -20cm). These results revealed a magnanimous encroachment on the buffer zones, which is an indication of bad status for the Biosphere Reserves as well as against the spirit of the sustainable use of the natural resources.

Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is one of the most considerable branches of Operation Research. MCDM refers to making decisions in the presence of multiple, usually conflicting, criteria. The problems in MCDM are classified into two categories: Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) and Multiple Objective Decision Making (MODM). However, very often the terms MADM and MCDM are used to mean the same class of models and mostly confused in practice. Usually, MADM is used when the model cannot state in mathematical equations and otherwise MODM is used (Hwang and Yoon, 1980). Decision-making (DM) is extremely important stage in Mining Engineering like other engineering branches. Every mining engineer makes several decisions in daily mining applications. Most of the decisions made by mining engineers are completely instinctive according to their past experiences and there is not any DM method applied in DM process. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is one of the well-known techniques solving the decision problems. The AHP is very simple, and understandable method especially non-numerical data considered in DM process. Equipment selection is one of the prominent problems of mining engineering. Mining engineers have to make difficult decisions when equipment selection stage. As the decisions in the equipment selection have radically influenced the economic life of any mining scenario, these are considered as complex MADM problem. So, the decision maker can evaluate the subjective criteria in the problem of equipment selection. The decision maker wants to maximize more than one objective criterion for equipment selection stage. Among the number of alternatives, the most suitable equipment must be selected according to objectives and alternatives. MADM applications can help the decision maker to reach the optimal solution for the equipment selection. In the mining industry, MADM methods can be applied for the equipment selection because it is a process that includes subjective and objective criteria affecting the selection of equipment among the alternatives.

Limestone-based material shows great promise for removal of arsenic from water. In laboratory tests, it has removed more than 95% or arsenic and more than 99% of cadmium and lead. In addition, the waste material appears to be suitable for recycling or disposal in an ordinary landfill. However, the efficiency of limestone for arsenic removal could be improved. Recent research has shown that iron treatment of limestone can enhance its arsenic-removal efficiency greatly, increasing its attractiveness as an alternative to other methods.

The efficiency of a coal mine ventilation circuit is usually measured by the ratio of the sum of the face quantities divided by the quantity supplied by the fans. Other types of systems use the power delivered to the power supplied to measure efficiency. This paper argues the case that the current measure may be inadequate and that by also looking at the power ratio, ventilation may be better managed. Problems associated with failing ventilation systems would be highlighted earlier so that crisis management could be avoided.

Introduction An integrated oil company has two options in approaching strategic planning. It has to decide whether it is in business for the long-term. I state this in all seriousness. Those who help manage public companies have the responsibility of good stewardship of other people&apos;s money. We must decide whether continued investment in our basic business will generate a reasonable rate of return. With a world surplus of petroleum production capacity, and continuing downward pressure on prices, this question should be addressed by all oil companies. And a positive answer is not necessarily a foregone conclusion in all cases. The decision should be made based on proven competence in finding and developing petroleum reserves on a cost-competitive basis with other producers, and on a frank analysis of future prospects. This should include a realistic assessment of the projected rate of return on specific investment projects. If a company did not pass these tests, its strategy could take one of four paths. Diversification First, it could diversify. But recent history suggests that oil companies are not good at managing other businesses. Second, it could seek a buyer for its business at the optimum return for its owners. Third, it could sell its assets on a piecemeal basis. And, fourth, it could adopt a longer-range plan of self-liquidation by living off current recoverable reserves. In other words, by not investing in exploration and development, it could maximize short-term profit and pass the money back to shareholders in the form of dividends. The Conoco component of DuPont has a below-average cost of finding petroleum, a good track record of efficient production, and a full plate of projects that pass the test of return-on-investment. In short, Conoco is in business for the long-term. That fact, in itself, determines at least one key element in strategy. This is to extend the life of the petroleum reserve base while at the same time maintaining maximum efficient rates of production to provide a strong cash flow. A company that is able to maintain a strong reserve base will ultimately see the value of those reserves escalate as world oil supplies tighten. Our planners expect this tightening to occur within the next decade as demand grows and production in non-OPEC areas of the world begins to decline. An exploration program tailored to meet the requirements of reserve replacement and current production should have two basic parts. "In June or July 2005, the European Commission will present its Thematic Strategy on the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources proposal to the Council and European Parliament, one of the seven Thematic Strategies to be developed and implemented under the 6th European Environment Action Programme in support of the European Union’s Sustainable Development Strategy defined by the European Union’s Head of State at the Göteborg European Council, in June 2001. The time scale for this Thematic Strategy is 25 years (2005-2030). This paper discusses some of the key issues related to the EU minerals and metals industry that needs to be addressed by the Strategy. These are: - the need for access to mineral reserves in the EU and abroad; - the need to strenghten the capacity of developing countries to sustainably promote and regulate the use of their mineral potential; - the need for an EU mineral resources intelligence capacity. There are additional important needs, which are not discussed in this paper, such as: - the need to foster further innovation in mining, ore beneficiation and metallurgical technologies; - the need to integrate and simplify the exisitng complex regulatory framework applicable to the EU mining industry and to effectively implement existing legislation."

Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material&apos;s low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. Hindered-bed separators are recognized as low-cost, high-capacity devices for both classification and density separation; however, since their inception, there have been few significant advances in the fundamental technology. Recently, Eriez has shown through modeling and pilot-scale testing that the innovative approach to feed presentation offered in the CrossFlow teeter-bed separator provides improved metallurgy when compared to traditional hindered-bed classifiers or single-stage coal spirals. This design feature prevents excess water from entering the separation chamber and disrupting the overall fluidization flow rate within the teeter zone. Most recently, a side-by-side industrial scale evaluation has verified that this technology improves overall efficiency and simultaneously reduces the separation cut-point. With regards to coal processing, data from full-scale units indicate that the CrossFlow offers good separation efficiency, high unit capacity, and metallurgical results consistent with laboratory- and pilot-scale separators.

The use of membranes in wastewater systems has increased rapidly in recent years. Microporous or semi-permeable barriers augment conventional chemical or biological processes to meet stringent treatment targets. These developments enable elegant solutions to wastewater discharge challenges and extend the scope of water recycle redressing the overall water balance and operational economics Wastewater treatment processes are discussed by reference to the spectrum of waterborne contaminants and the respective membrane separation capabilities. The role chemical pre-treatment to enable physical separation of metals with micro-filtration (MF) is described and how integration of MF with reverse osmosis (RO) is used to control a broader range of dissolved contaminants Membrane configurations are considered apropos function, operational economics and sustainability. These features are exemplified with case studies. Firstly, MF alone following chemical precipitation for the removal of heavy metals, then MF onto two stages RO of different configurations for TDS reduction and waste volume minimisation and finally an open channel RO alone for the reduction of inorganic COD from a leach stream.

An assessment of U.S. western hard-rock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed, and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hard-rock mining machines. Ninety-six percent of the operators had daily noise doses that exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214%, and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jack-leg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners. This National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was conducted to focus future research on the most significant electrical problems in the mining industry. Data from 1,926 mine electrical accidents (including 75 fatalities) that occurred between 1990 and 1999 were studied. Coal and metal-nonmetal operator- and contractor-reported data are presented. All data used in this analysis were MSHA closeout data, except 1999, which were preliminary data. Electricity was the 4th leading cause of death reported in mining despite being the 14th leading cause of injuries. Electrical shock, not electrical burns, caused 70 of the 75 electrical fatalities reported. About one-half of mine electrical accidents and fatalities occurred during electrical maintenance. Suggestions for mitigating electrical hazards are proposed.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the thermal environment and determine the contributing heat sources within the existing 153 Orebody of Coleman/McCreedy East Mine which would then enable the prediction of the climatic conditions in the mine?s future 170 Orebody. The study entailed continuously monitoring, for a 2-week period, the dry-bulb temperature, humidity and barometric pressure along the existing intake airways from surface down to the 4810 Level and throughout an active mining area on that level. Furthermore, the mining activities and associated equipment that could be responsible for any changes in the temperature and humidity conditions within this mining area were also monitored. These data were then used to develop and validate a climatic simulation of the mine?s mechanized cut and fill mining method. This climatic model was then transposed to the future 5700 Level in the deeper 170 Orebody, to determine the environmental conditions within its production workings and along the main haulage route ascending from that area. Based upon the simulations performed it was shown that the level of ventilation planned for the new orebody should be able to maintain adequate environmental conditions. However, this study did emphasize the importance of the appropriate distribution of airflow in workplaces that used auxiliary ventilation in order to sustain a suitable thermal environment.
