"The solid-state reduction of ilmenite concentrate with graphite was studied under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1050°C and 1350°C. The rate of reduction increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size, with the maximum extent of reduction found to be 80% at 1350oC with a particle size in the range of -106 +90 µm. The activation energy for the reduction reaction was calculated to be 257 kJ/mole. The trivalent iron oxide was reduced first to divalent iron oxide and then to metallic iron. An annular ring of a partially reduced oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was formed around the core of ilmenite, which grew in size as the original ilmenite core shrank with progressive reduction. The reduction of titanium dioxide also took place during this stage, which produced the Magneli oxides in the form of TinO2n-1. The metallic phase had very high Fe and low Ti contents throughout the reduction, whereas the partially reduced oxide phase adjacent to the metallic phase was high in Ti and depleted in Fe. The metallic phase globules formed during this stage were small and are considered suitable only for leaching and not for other concentration processes. The core of the particle generally retained the composition of the original ilmenite. The purpose of this work was to remove iron and increase the titanium oxide content of the ilmenite to produce a high-titanium containing charge for subsequent smelting.IntroductionThe titanium-bearing minerals ilmenite (FeTiO3) and rutile (TiO2) are the primary natural raw materials used in industry to produce titanium metal and titanium-based products. The common titanium-bearing minerals are ilmenite, rutile, anatase, brookite, leucoxene, arizonite, and perovskite. Although the formula of ilmenite is commonly expressed as FeTiO3, the mineral can accommodate Mn and Mg, which are chemically bound in the form of (Fe,Mn,Mg)TiO3. Ilmenite concentrate can also contain Fe2O3 and Al2O3 in addition to the physically separable oxides such as SiO2 and CaO. The crystal structure of ilmenite is an ordered derivative of the corundum structure with a trigonal-rhombohedral symmetry. Fe2+ and Ti4+ ions occupy the octahedral sites, leaving the tetrahedral sites unoccupied. In each FeTiO3 unit, there are three O2- ions creating three octahedral sites, two of which are occupied by Fe2+ and Ti4+ (Wilson et al., 2005)."

Recycling has become an important part of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) life cycle due to the growing demand for energy storage in applications like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Recycling spent LIBs provides a secondary source for strategically scarce metals, like lithium and cobalt, helping to reduce the environmental impact of LIBs. Organic acids have been proven to be effective lixiviants with the benefit of reduced environmental impacts, amongst which citric acid has shown to exhibit similar extraction performance when compared to mineral acids. Leaching LCO and NMC batteries with 1.5M citric acid and 2 vol.% H2O2 at 95°C, 20 g/L for 20 minutes achieved 93% Al, 90% Co, 96% Li, 94% Mn and 94% Ni dissolution. The strong chelating property of citric acid affects the separation of the metals, providing unique extraction opportunities. The first extraction uses 12 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH of 2.5 and O/A ratio of 2 to separate 96.4% Mn and 100% Al from the PLS in two counter-current stages. Stripping the loaded organic with 1.25M citric acid at an A/O ratio of 3 allows for up to 91% stripping of the manganese in a single stage. The second extraction then separates 96.5% Li from the PLS in three counter-current stages using 20 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH 5.5 and O/A ratio of 5. Australian mining companies are actively exploring for and developing mineral deposits throughout the world with interests in emerging markets such as Africa, Asia and South America. It is important to understand emerging market risk as this will affect the willingness of mining companies and financial institutions to invest in a country, especially with reference to their key asset, the mining licence or operating/concession agreement. Mining companies looking to develop new projects in emerging markets have different risk profiles than projects in countries such as Australia and Canada. Examples of key risks faced in emerging markets include: 1. political - expropriation, nationalisation, contract frustration, currency inconvertibility, war, terrorism, strikes, riots and civil commotion; and 2. legal - mining legislation, arbitration and dispute resolution, trade agreements. There is a problem in the difference in risk perceptions between mining companies, financial institutions and insurers. This can cause different stakeholders to carry out different evaluations of the risks faced by a project, resulting in confusion about the risk margin attached to any project. In a time where resource nationalisation and energy security are prompting governments to become more involved in the mining sector we run through some recent examples of mining companies that have had problems due to the key risks highlighted earlier. Importance of carrying out the right due diligence to replace perceptions with reality: ? early identification of risks - detailed due diligence on emerging market risks that may arise will help with their identification and mitigation, ? make use of companies that can help identify risks and suggest solutions, ? control the cost of financing - risk margin applied to a project ? finance loan will be influenced by the risks faced, and ? risk management and using political risk insurance. There are plenty of opportunities in emerging markets but it is important to recognise the associated risks. Detailed due diligence at an early stage will provide long-term benefits.

"Szaibelyite–suanite type ore is rich in magnesium oxide and boron oxide. We propose a new method to extract both metallic magnesium and valuable residues rich in boron by reduction using metallic aluminium.Thermodynamic analysis of the reactions between aluminum and MgO, Mg2B2O5, and Mg3B2O6 was carried out. The effects of CaF2 addition, temperature, mass of Al, and pellet formation pressure on the extraction of magnesium were also investigated experimentally.The results indicate that the magnesium oxide phase can be displaced from 2MgO-B2O3 and 3MgO·B2O3 by CaO in the reduction system. The reduction ratio of magnesium oxide was 38% without calcium fluoride addition, increasing to 94% with 5.1% calcium fluoride. The reduction ratio increased with increasing temperature and mass of Al. To obtain a higher reduction ratio, the reduction pellet should be formed under a reasonable pressure.IntroductionBoron and its compounds are widely used in textiles, borosilicate glass, metallurgy, fertilizers, and nuclear shielding. Boron resources are mainly found in Turkey, the USA, Russia, and China. In Liaoning, China, there are abundant szaibelyite–suanite type ores that are rich in magnesium oxide and boron oxide. Szaibelyite and suanite ores are used to produce borax by a carbon dioxide– soda process. Annually, 2 Mt of waste materials containing 3–20% B2O3 and 2–25% MgO are produced during the process. It is necessary to make use of these waste materials containing high concentrations of boron oxide and magnesium oxide to avoid environmental problems as well as for economic reasons (Ozdemir and K1pcak, 2007)"

Designing and optimising flotation circuits are critical for mineral beneficiation plants, and therefore several procedures have been published. The modelling of flotation circuits with the objective of design and optimisation is problematic in that different approaches are used for the modelling of flotation units and regrinding units. Usually, regrinding models are based on particles characterised by their size, while flotation models are based on species characterised by fast and slow classes. The relationship between particle size and liberation can be used, but it requires laboratory studies that are time-consuming and costs are high. It is therefore not surprising that few studies on flotation circuit design and optimisation include flotation units and regrinding units simultaneously. In this paper, it is proposed to model the regrinding stage using species characterised by fine-slow, medium-fast, and coarse-slow flotation species. In deep, the regrinding model is derived from a population balance approach based on flotation species. The fraction of these species at the feed and product of the grinding unit is determined by flotation tests. Then, based on these data, the model parameters can be determined by a regression estimation procedure. A local ore was used to validate the model. The discovery of the gold-rich Main Reef Group of reefs on the farm Langlaagte in 1886 marked the opening of the richest and most extensive goldfield in history. Mining of the narrow reefs progressed from the outcrops to more than 3,5 km, and has made South Africa the foremost mining country in the world. Changes in the political and socio-economic climate create a new challenge to the gold-mining industry. The most significant of these is the emergence of Black trade unions, with their demands for higher wages, improved safety, job advancement, and abolition of discriminatory legislation. Industrial conflicts on gold mines have risen significantly in the past ten years, and are likely to continue in the future, although the causes of these conflicts may change. Events largely outside the control of the gold-mining industry, such as the improved dollar price for gold and the depreciation of the value of the rand relative to major currencies, have enabled the industry to meet the demands for higher wages and to narrow the wage gap. However, labour productivities have improved insignificantly and are a cause of major concern for the future development of the industry. Continued pressure in the industrial-relations area, the inflation of working costs, and the extension of mining operations to greater depths and more difficult areas create major challenges to mine managements and mining engineers. Significant improvements in mining technology, environmental control, and safety will have to be made to ensure the long-term survival of the industry. The unavoidable introduction in deep gold mines of mechanization on a larger scale to meet the requirements of higher labour productivities and a better and safer underground environment will have a major impact on the cost and management structure of these mines. Engineering will assume a more important role on deep gold mil1es, and management styles and structures will have to be adapted to accommodate these changes. The supply of suitably qualified engineers, technicians, and artisans will be a crucial factor controlling the rate of technological change. The industry is well-geared through its Group system to meet these challenges, and to benefit from the experience gained in the operation of highly mechanized mines. However, changes take time to implement and there is very little time left.

P.W.D. ROSTER OF CONSULTING ENGINEERS (Extract from a letter from the Secretary for Public Works) In recent years a large number of professional engineers has entered the consulting field. Although the names of most of these have been placed on the Department's roster of consulting engineers either as a result of representations made by the South African Association of Consulting Engineers or by applying direct to the Department there are still some who seem to think that canvassing through an influential person is necessary to obtain commissions from the Department. The Department's roster is open to all registered professional engineers who are suitably experienced to undertake consulting work and commissions are awarded strictly on merit. I shall appreciate it, therefore, if registered professional engineers who wish to be considered for commissions by the Department could be advised that they must apply, in the first instance, to be placed on the Department's roster. On receipt of such an application a questionnaire listing all the information required by the Department will be forwarded to the applicants for completion and returning to the Department for record purposes. All names which appear on the roster are taken into account when a commission has to be awarded, due consideration being given to factors such as geographical position, seniority, capability and compatibility. Some of the important properties of solid electrolytes that influence the performance of electrochemical oxygen probes are discussed in the first part of this paper. It is shown that accurate and reproducible measurements of oxygen in liquid steel are possible with commercial oxygen probes only if great care is exercised in the make-up of the chemical and phase composition, as well as the microstructure of the solid electrolytes used in these probes. To prove this premise, the second part of this study reports on the results of an experimental evaluation of new commercially available oxygen probe. An evaluation of the solid electrolytes used in this probe indicated that the consistency of the chemical composition, degree of stabilization, and microstructure of the electrolytes used are well controlled. The successful application of this particular oxygen probe under industrial conditions was confirmed. It was also found possible to make reliable and reproducible measurements, with acceptable uncertainty, by proper handling of the probe. Some recommendations are made as to the interpretation of the e.m.f. response curve and the use of the electronic processing unit supplied with the probe.

Despite their inadequacy, assumptions of isotropy and homogeneity are often applied to the analyses of in situ permeability tests. In this paper, we exam the effects of anisotropy and heterogeneity on Pressure Pulse Test (PPT) and Constant Head Injection Test (CHIT) by means of numerical approaches. Some new findings that offer practical considerations in properly interpreting in-situ permeability tests are presented. Malgré leur manque de précision inhérente, les assomptions d'anisotropie et d'hétérogénéité sont souvent utilisées lors de test de perméabilité in situ. Dans cette étude, nous examinons les effets de l'anisotropie et de l'hétérogénéité sur le test par pression pulsée et le test à injection à charge hydraulique constante par le biais de la simulation numérique. Des nouveaux résultats permettant une interprétation pratique et claire des test de perméabilité in-situ sont présentés. Trotz ihrer inhärenten Ungeeignetheit werden häufig Annahmen über Isotropie und Homogenität auf Analysen von in-situ Permeabilitätstests angewendet. In diesem Papier untersuchen wir die Effekte von Anisotropie und Heterogenität auf Durck-Impuls-Test (PPT) und Konstant-Kopf-Einspritztest (CHIT) mit numerischen Ansätzen. Einige neue Befunde, die zu praktischen Erwägungen zur richtigen Interpretation von in-situ Permeabilitätstests führen, werden vorgestellt.

The safe and optimal installation of roof support remains one of the biggest challenges in underground mining today. Traditional hand-held, roofbolt installation in conventional mining has been replaced, in a lot of mining operations, by mechanized equipment. This was a first step to moving the operators out of the unsafe working environment and a start on the trend toward a changed support regime in mechanized mining. However, the challenge of handling of the drill steel itself, as well as inserting resin cartridges and bolts, remains a major hazard and the cause of many lost-time injuries. The paper describes and discusses developments in this area, of mechanized bolting and on-board automation, presenting solutions to known problems, achievements to date, and future developments. The solutions presented will identify with addressing customer needs while touching on possibilities for further technology changes, keeping focus on the safety aspect for operators and the need to bring the operators even further away from the unsafe working environment. The-state-of-the-art technology in mechanized bolting equipment is presented and a brief outlook on the past, current, and future developments is given.

This paper describes DRA?s involvement with the expansions at Tati Nickel, Phoenix Mine, that have taken an initial plant design of 3.6 Mtpa (originally built by Murray & Roberts), up to 5 Mtpa, and eventually 12 Mtpa capacity. Initially, the plant could not achieve the design name plate capacity for the first few years of operation, as a consequence of the notoriously hard and abrasive nickel ore affecting primarily the operation of the crusher circuit. In order to extend the life of mine, Tati? assessed and then redefined the mining plan, choosing to increase the Phoenix mine reserves to a lower cut-off grade. In order to increase nickel units produced, the concentrator had to therefore treat additional tonnage at lower head grades. Site investigations and field tests around the comminution circuits are outlined, indicated that the milling circuit could be increased to 650 tph, from the initial design of 470 tph, for a similar feed grade and recovery. A project was initiated to debottleneck the crusher circuit and achieve the new target throughput. (Project 5M). This was followed by a feasibility study of the impact of pre-concentration by DMS, which after promising laboratory tests, was followed up with the installation of a 200 tph ?demonstration? plant. The success of this demonstration plant provided the impetus to expand the supply to the 5 Mtpa mill from a large preconcentration stage. A gyratory crusher (one of the largest and most powerful) will receive ore directly from the open pit operation, feeding into a secondary-tertiary crushing plant followed by a modular DMS preparation circuit. Four large DMS processing modules have been installed to treat the tonnage, with high expected rejection levels. Finally a review of the DMS process capability on an ostensibly disseminated micro-gabbro nickel ore is given, which shows the remarkable impact that preconcentration can have on an operation, both in terms of profitability and a successful process ?expansion?. The performance of the DMS plant has significantly extended the life of mine, allowing the mine to significantly reduce mine cut-off grades and curb its previously selective mining practice.

The productivity indices of the Republic of South Africa compare poorly with those of its competitors in the rest of the world. The theory of productivity is relatively simple, and various models are available to demonstrate this. The problem is how to apply the theory in practice and to convert it into a practical management system that will guarantee results. The secret lies in a management approach that aims at a continuous improvement in achievement and that involves the entire work force down to the lowest level in the process. Good management systems ensuring the necessary attention to, among others, management by objectives, finance, personnel, maintenance, planning, and control are a prerequisite for continued improvement and staff involvement. The net result of such an approach is described by the term performance management, which encompasses the total integration of al a company's management systems.

Automation in mining requires accurate maps of road networks on site. Because roads on open-cut mines are dynamic in nature and continuously changing, manually updating road maps is tedious and error-prone. This paper investigates the possibility of automatically deriving an accurate representation of the road network using GPS data available from haul trucks operating on site. We present an overview of approaches proposed in literature and test the performance of publicly available methods on GPS data collected from trucks operating on site. Based on shortcomings seen in all tested algorithms, a post-processing step is developed which geometrically analyses the created road map for artefacts typical of free-drive areas on mine sites and significantly improves the quality of the final road network graph.

"Simulation is a technique for studying the operation of systems by synthetic experimentation. With digital computers it is possible to simulate even the complex production processes in gold mining. This has great potential in that it enables the investigation, analysis and comparison of mining systems to be done accurately, rapidly and at low cost. Two programs have been developed to simulate the principal underground production processes in gold mining.These are the simulation of any stope contract and the simulation of underground transport operations. The programs synthesize these mining activities from a large number of small unit operations. The stope contract program simulates rockbreaking by drilling and blasting and the cleaning of the panels by face and gully scraping. The transport program simulates the functions and movements of all vehicles running on rails on one underground level. The simulation programs provide an effective means for experimenting with mining activities."

The vision of having large, high quality diamond as part of a broad engineering tool-kit for many diverse high tech industries is now becoming a reality however, with the advent of early stage commercial availability of single crystal and poly crystalline CVD diamond.

Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle rearrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by a pulsating fluid flow. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. The particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen and helped and influenced by the feed material that is introduced at one end. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically ?cut? at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired product from the less dense gangue material. The issue of correct pulse characteristics (shape, amplitude and frequency) for the optimal metallurgical stratification of air pulsating jigs has been the subject of much discussion over the years. The accuracy of the dissymmetric stratification depends on the control parameters and the mechanical condition of specific equipment used. This paper will touch on some of the control and mechanical parameters affecting the separation efficiency.

'Gee Whiz', a nationwide schools' science and technology competition, is being screened on SATY1 on Friday evenings at 18:00. Twenty-seven schools from al over South Africa are taking part in the series, which will run for 13 weeks. The participating schools were selected on the basis of their performance in the National Youth Science Olympiad and in Mintek's Minsa science competition, which has been organized on an annual basis since 1988.

RyderTaken as a whole, the difference between the four papers in this session were perhaps more illuminating than their similarities. The titles of the first and second papers contained the word 'simulation', and in both papers random number generation was relied upon in the selection of inputs from empirical distributions, but the nature of the models to which these values were inputs were quite different. The third paper displayed another method of uniting the empirical and the theoretical in a linear programming formulation whose matrix coefficients were measured empirically, and here some apt remarks on computer implementation were included. This paved the way for the last paper which abandoned all theoretical pretensions in favour of a detailed description of computer implementation and perhaps as a result gave rise to the most feeling audience participation.The systems mentioned were developed for the iron, petrol, copper and gold producing industries in the US, Canada, Zambia and South Africa..As with all the parallel sessions, contributions from the floor may have been limited by the shorter time available to delegates to acquaint themselves with the papers before the session. In spite of this, and due largely to the active chairman¬ship of Dr Cook, the discussion during the session which is summarized here contributed much to the information contained in the papers themselves.In his presentation, Dr Calder summarized his paper. He expected that simulation would be used in future on an almost universal basis in open pit mining. It could contribute new knowledge more cheaply than experimentation in the flea For example, this study had shown what was previously thought to be a matter of more shovels and trucks was really a blasting problem, and improving blasting had increased production to the desired level. The simulation had shown that uniformity of truck performance was a desirable factor. It had also been used to study the advisability of a dispatching system.Dr Ramani contended that where equipment characteristics were available, deterministic standard simulation could adequately simulate systems in which interference occurred. Operator performance could be measured against perfor¬mance curves predicted by standard simulation and poor operators spotted and retrained. The present system did not take into account variability in truck loading, for instance. Dr Calder replied that if the number of variables was large, the standard approach became too complicated for operating personnel to follow. He admitted he had not tried it. The variability of truck loading could be coped with easily using the Monte Carlo approach. Operator variability was already incorporated because the time studies are actual."

Optimising the configuration of infill drill holes is an important step during mineral exploration campaigns. However, this optimisation process encompassing all possible drilling configurations within a mineral deposit is highly combinatorial and hard to solve in a reasonable time. This paper proposes using spatial clustering algorithms to divide the orebody into contiguous zones and target the best zones with infill drilling in order to reduce the size of this optimisation problem. Several clustering algorithms are assessed in a spatial context on hypothetical datasets. This evaluation shows that the hierarchical density-based spatial clustering application with noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm can be used in combination with the uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) dimensionality reduction algorithm to identify contiguous zones in the orebody.
