The simulation of multi-component classification with modified viscosity model is the key focus in the current study. The classification of the ores using hydrocyclone is a renowned process and has a convoluted flow separation phenomenon. The highly turbulent flow inside hydrocyclone depends on the operating and design parameters apart from the feed mixture. Slurry viscosity also plays a dominant role in the classification of solid particles under the centrifugal settling action. A heterogeneous mixture with different components would result in different settling and rheological behaviour of particles’ suspension in the water medium. The newly proposed multi-component viscosity model (Mandakini et al. 2020) is implemented as a user-defined function to define the material property during the CFD study of the mixture rheology inside hydrocyclone classifier. The multiphase and turbulence model is solved using the modified Algebraic Slip Model and Large Eddy Simulation model. A comparison of the predicted component performance curves is evaluated with and without the corrected viscosity model. The density and size effect on the particle phase distribution inside the classifier are compared, where the misplacements of the finer particles are carefully assessed. Validation of the component classification in hydrocyclone with the laboratory experiments found a close agreement with the rheology based CFD data. The electrical control of three-electrode submerged-arc furnaces suffers from a number of complexities, mostly due to the nature of the furnace electrical circuit providing power to the furnace where the three electrodes are interconnected within the furnace through the molten metal bath. This gives rise to what is known as the interaction effect 2, where variations in one electrode?s current can cause comparable changes to the currents in the other electrodes, particularly in larger furnaces with low power factor. Resistance-based control of the electrode penetration has largely alleviated these problems, since the resistance encountered by each electrode is predominantly dictated by the length and conductivity of the current path from the electrode?s tip to the molten metal bath, which acts as the three-phase circuit?s floating neutral point. Hence resistance changes due to tip position or conductivity changes beneath one electrode do not affect the resistances beneath the others, effectively decoupling the control of the individual electrodes1. Although resistance-based control is therefore generally accepted as superior to current-based control for the regulation of submerged-arc furnace electrode penetration, a few furnace operators still prefer to use current control under specific furnace conditions. This paper presents the results of analysing the performance of both current and resistance-based control in typical scenarios encountered on industrial furnaces, taking into account a number of factors including electrode penetration, power distribution, efficiency and asymmetry of the electrode currents. In order to accomplish this, three typically encountered scenarios were simulated. The results obtained show that resistance control provides more benefit in all cases, however, the uneven electrode current distribution generated by resistance control when electrodes are on top stops may cause some concern if baking of the electrodes is required in this scenario.

The standard technology for processing of gold-bearing sulfide raw material has many problems associated with the use of cyanide as a gold lixiviant. Therefore, many tests to find alternative gold recovery methods are being undertaken. This paper describes some technological solutions, which can become alternatives to cyanide technology in the future. Pressure oxidation (POX) of refractory gold-bearing sulfide concentrates from five different Russian gold deposits were investigated. Concentrate 1 was gold-copper concentrate. Concentrate 2 was gold-pyrite concentrate. Concentrates 3-5 were pyrite-arsenopyrite double refractory concentrates. The POX tests were at temperatures of 110, 200 and 220 °C and oxygen pressures of 1.5, 2.4 and 3.0 MPa were carried out. Gold lixiviants, such as chloride, thiosulfate, sulfite and thiocyanate were tested. The recovery of gold from sulfide gold-bearing concentrates by non-cyanide methods was 97- 99%, and from double refractory concentrates, 86-93%. The tested reagents are less toxic than cyanide, and their use will reduce of the cost of gold production. These methods make it possible to recover gold in acidic media, and eliminate the washing operation and POX slurry neutralisation. In addition, precious metals recovery from POX cakes using lead reduction smelting was investigated. It was shown that the “POX-pyrometallurgical” technology for double refractory concentrates processing could be used with recoveries of gold and silver of 97 and 96%, respectively. ST Equipment & Technology (STET)’s tribo-electrostatic belt separator technology allows for the beneficiation of fine mineral powders by means of an entirely water-free technology with high throughput and low energy consumption. The STET separator is suited for separation of very fine (<1 μm) to moderately coarse (500 μm) particles, in contrast to other electrostatic processes that are typically limited to particles >75 μm in size. STET has performed exploratory studies with several iron ores including tailings and experimental results to date have demonstrated that low-grade iron fines can be upgraded by means of STET tribo-electrostatic separator to commercial grades (58-65%Fe). Experimental results together with high-level economic evaluations indicate that scavenging processes involving low drying costs, DSO operations and tailings beneficiation offer a commercially viable processing method to recover fine iron that would otherwise be lost by traditional processing. Dry electrostatic processing of iron ore presents a clean, low-energy opportunity for iron producers to reduce costs and wet tailings generation associated with traditional gravimetric, flotation and wet magnetic separation circuits. Moreover, STET technology allows for mining waste utilisation and resource recovery from iron ore fines and tailings, therefore offering processors a novel method to recover fines that would otherwise be difficult to process to sellable grades with existing technologies. Metal dusting is a corrosion phenomenon that occurs in strongly carburizing gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Reaction kinetics and product characterizations of Alloys 602CA and 800 were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results showed that Alloy 602CA is more resistant to metal dusting than Alloy 800. Visual examination and SEM surface analysis showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack after a relatively short exposure period. The amount of coke deposits increased on Alloy 800 with increased exposure from 96 to 336 hours. X-ray diffraction on the reacted surfaces identified graphite and austenite in both alloys and some iron oxides/spinel for Alloy 800.

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluoridesl.2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02?SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F?XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo-dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

The KX36 kimberlite was discovered using a high-resolution gradient aeromagnetic survey, with follow-up detailed ground geophysics and deflation soil sampling used to assess and prioritize the geophysical anomalies identified from the initial aeromagnetic survey. Prospect drilling intersected kimberlite in the first hole drilled on the KX36 anomaly. Preliminary evaluation has shown that KX36 is diamondiferous, and a more detailed evaluation and sampling programme is currently underway. The area around KX36 has been prospected by numerous companies over the last few decades, with sporadic kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) recoveries in regional deflation sampling indicating the possible presence of kimberlites, but without sufficient resolution to ?home in? on specific targets. Previous (lower resolution) aeromagnetic surveys and soil sampling campaigns also did not define anomalies with sufficient detail to guide prospect drilling effectively. The discovery of KX36 highlights the prospectivity of areas of Botswana under deep Kalahari cover that have been explored previously. During the processing of iron ores, a large quantity of low-grade tailings containing abundant iron values in fine particle size range is produced. Due to the increasing demand in the high-grade ores for metallurgical operations and the stringent environmental conditions imposed on mining activity, it is essential to utilise the waste tailing pond slimes. Recovery of iron values from these tailing ponds not only enhances the life of the existing operating mines, but also enables achievement of a sustainable process. Iron ore tailing/slime (-150 μm) is produced after scrubbing and wet screening of a low-grade iron ore. Tailing beneficiation of iron ore has been addressed either by flotation or wet high intensity high gradient separation. The present paper aims to recover iron values from discarded slime containing assay ~56% Fe, ~6.5% SiO2, and ~7.0% Al2O3 from the Noamundi processing plant by using a high gradient magnetic separator (HGMS). In this process, tailings are effectively processed with a vertical pulsating high gradient magnetic separator to produce a relatively high-grade iron concentrate. The results of investigation indicate that this novel process is capable of producing an iron concentrate assaying ~ 60% Fe and ~3.25% alumina with a yield of ~55 % on weight basis and recover > 65 % iron bearing particles from the tailings. More importantly, the corresponding tailing contained ~45% Fe. It was concluded that this novel process may be effectively used to recover iron values from low-grade hematite tailings. "Excessive amounts of moisture in product coal can influence the efficiency of downstream utilization processes due to a decreased calorific value and handling problems. Stockpiles can be used to decrease the moisture content of coal by means of gravity drainage and evaporation. This paper is focused on the evaporation of moisture from a coal stockpile surface with the aim of investigating the effect of particle size on the rate of evaporation as well as the depth to which evaporation extends.It was observed that moisture initially evaporates at a higher rate from a stockpile consisting of fine particles (-6.7 mm) than from coarser particles (-13.2 mm +6.7 mm). This high rate of evaporation is restricted to the outer shell of the fine coal stockpile. However, for coarse coal, the porous nature increases the depth at which evaporation occurs. Evaporation of moisture was observed up to the fourth day of each experimental run, after which steady state was obtained. It was shown the water can evaporate from the surface into the body of the stockpile, depending on the coal particle size and void spacing. An experimental reclaim depth of 0.4 m was achieved after 4 days. IntroductionCoal stockpiles serve as surge capacity for downstream utilization processes and can also be used for moisture reduction by means of gravity drainage and evaporation. Excessive amounts of moisture in coal can cause handling problems and, most importantly, will decrease the calorific value, leading to inefficient combustion.Research has shown that evaporation by means of wind and solar action is considerably more effective than gravity drainage(Williams, D.J. 2006), but the effect is limited to a restricted depth from the exterior of the stockpile (Boyapati, E. and Oates, A. 1994; CSEM-UAE, 2010). The effectiveness of wind and solar action can be improved by orienting the stockpile perpendicular to the predominant wind direction, maximizing the surface area of the pile, and reclaiming the coal from the pile gradually in shallow cuts over a large area (Williams, D.J. 2006)."

The aim of this paper is to study the characteristics of limestone particles (size varies from 4 mm to 20 mm) during its transportation from open cast mines through pipes. The influence of four different size fractions of limestone samples (4–6 mm, 6–10 mm, 10–15 mm, and 15–20 mm) on pipe flow characteristics during vertical transport in a 100 mm NB hose pipe was investigated. The flow velocities in the vertically lifting pipe was varied from 0.95 m/s to 2.78 m/s and a rotary feeder of 2 to 4 tonne/hr. capacity was employed to feed the limestone samples to the lifting pipe. The pressure drop data for the different size fractions of limestone samples at different mixture velocities were analysed. The effect of input volume fraction and superficial velocity of limestone samples on hold-up ratio were discussed. It was indicated that there was no substantial increase in pressure drop of slurry samples in the studied range of concentrations (CW = 4.22% - 12.54%), particle size, and low to medium range mixture velocities with respect to water run head loss data. The hold-up for the larger size fractions (15–20 mm) of limestone samples was found to be significant as compared to smaller size fractions, which may be due to terminal settling velocities of individual fractions of the studied samples.

Spiral concentrators are widely used in the coal industry treating fine (-1mm) coal. Their application was a limitation to the product quality until the introduction of low-cut spirals which allow a lower quality ash product to be produced, thus expanding the market. The Exxaro Grootegeluk 1 (GG1) plant has a two-stage traditional rougher-cleaner spiral circuit using conventional SX4 spirals to produce semi-soft coking coal product at 12.5% ash by mass. The overall plant product is 10.3% ash meaning that the coarser sized coal dense medium separation circuits must compensate. A low density cut-point spiral targetting 10.3% ash would thus be beneficial to the overall complex. The spirals were tested in the two-stage plant environment and in a pilot plant. This paper discusses the findings and compares a two stage four-turn low density cut and conventional spiral. The two spiral technologies were unable to sustain a 10.3% ash product. Pilot test work was also conducted on GG1 coal, demonstrating that an eight-turn low density cut-point spiral achieves the targetted 10.3% ash under controlled conditions. "Centre de Morphologie MathématiqueSpecial problems arise in the evaluation of lateritic-type orebodies (Ni-Co, bauxite) or, more generally, orebodies affected by surface weathering. In this type of orebody, the vertical grade distribution shows, from the hangingwall downwards, a systematic increase followed sometimes by a certain decrease, or vice-versa. These trends appear together with irregular variations from one drill bole to the other.The problem is to characterize a vertical structure that is representative not only of the drill hole but of an entire panel or zone of influence, in order to define mineable thicknesses for given cut-off grades. The vertical grade distribution observed on the drillhole is replaced by a new curve, called &apos;derive&apos; (drift), which is computed by &apos;universal kriging&apos;.Once the vertical study is completed, new &apos;service-variables&apos; are defined in the horizontal plane, such as mineable thickness and the corresponding average grade, economical functions (combination of the grades of several minerals). The local and global estimation of these variables can then be performed by a simple bi-dimensional kriging plan. The global estimation is summed up by several tonnage-cut-off grade curves.The practical valuation according to the above scheme of a New Caledonian lateritic nickel orebody is presented."

In recent years the requirements for a barrier system between the waste body of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and the natural ground (NG) has necessitated the use of HDPE-lined TSFs in South Africa and other countries. The addition of an HDPE liner creates an interface between, inter alia, the tailings and surrounding soils on the footprint of the TSF. It is known that low-strength materials beneath slopes can cause slope instability. One method which can theoretically mitigate this instability of a lined TSF is the addition of stability bunds along the footprint of the TSF. Altering the profile of the footprint to include slope changes which oppose the direction of the failure creates passive slices in a limit equilibrium analysis. The passive slices actively oppose the movement of active slices, resisting the mobilization of tailings, thus greater active slice forces are required to develop a failure surface running along the liner interface. Two scenarios are presented and compared. The first scenario retains the ground profile unaltered and the second scenario includes stability bunds along the ground profile. An in-depth assessment is made of the interslice forces and the interface shear stresses for each scenario. The theoretical background is discussed in greater detail to determine the mechanisms of reinforcement provided by the bunds.

To have been invited to deliver this second CMMI lecture is an honour that I deeply appreciate. But, when I contrast my qualifications for delivering it, with those of Sir Alistair Framet, who delivered the inaugural lecturet in the series, or with those of other members of the Council, I feel rather an imposter. Far from having been a miner al my life, I have been associated with the mining industry on a part-time basis for a mere eight years. However, I encourage myself with two recollections. The first is the admission of the great Sherlock Holmes that he was often guided to the truth by the erroneous opinions expressed to him by Dr Watson. I may be able to perform a similar service for you. Secondly, I recall that, when I was a member of the Diplomatic Service, I was quite often asked to address representative gatherings of such professional people as the police, architects, dress designers, teachers, doctors, funeral directors, bird fanciers, and so on. Since it would have been pointless to pretend that I was expert in any of their businesses, I used to resort to the technique of announcing as my theme&apos; A diplomat looks at the police&apos; or whatever profession it was. They fortunately took it as a compliment that their profession was apparently one that diplomats spent a lot of time brooding over. They could also afford to laugh of any criticism that I might make because it could be ascribed to ignorance rather than informed malice. I hope that you will do the same.

The 2101 lean duplex stainless steel has wide potential application in storage, heat exchangers, and in the oil and gas industries. This work investigates the electrochemical behaviour of 2101 duplex stainless steel with an addition of 0.15 wt% ruthenium, using potentiodynamic techniques in 1M H2SO4 at 25º, 40º, 60º, and 80ºC. The microstructures of samples were characterized using optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the ruthenium addition moved the corrosion potential of alloy 2101 to a more positive potential. All samples containing ruthenium displayed longer passive regions at 25°C and 80°C compared to those without ruthenium. Alloys without ruthenium had higher critical current density (icrit) values when compared to the alloys with ruthenium. Ruthenium additions decreased the passive current densities and inhibited anodic dissolution. At room temperature the corrosion rate of alloys with ruthenium was lower than these without ruthenium.

The 10th Annual UCT -US Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel at Gordon&apos;s Bay from 31 July to 2 August 1991. The conference was attended by 133 delegates representing a broad cross-section of the mining and metallurgical industry in South Africa. For the first time the Symposium, which was celebrating its 10th anniversary, was extended to two days. A cal for papers was announced and the organizers were inundated with responses resulting in a very full technical programme which consisted of 29 oral and 15 poster presentations.

"Fatigue is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is a causal or contributing factor in many incidents and accidents. Fatigue can be caused by work- and non-work-related factors. There is a lack of information about associations between demographic and other non-work factors, and fatigue. This study aimed to assess associations between demographic, work, living, and socioeconomic conditions, and lifestyle characteristics, and fatigue at a platinum smelter in South Africa. Eight interviews with management and two focus groups with production workers were conducted, and 75 questionnaires were completed by production and other workers. Both work- and non-work-related factors were considered to be causes of fatigue. These factors included overtime, shift work, high workloads, activities performed outside of work, age, race, housing tenure, diet, sleep disorders, stress, and job satisfaction. In general, higher levels of fatigue were reported by younger participants, those who rented accommodation, ate less healthily, had a sleep disorder, and those with high levels of stress and low job satisfaction. As various demographic, lifestyle, and wellness-related factors were associated with fatigue, both work and non-work contributors should be addressed in fatigue management plans. BackgroundFatigue may be defined as ‘a state of impaired mental and/or physical performance and lowered alertness arising as a result of, or a combination of, hard physical and mental work, health and psychosocial factors or inadequate restorative sleep’ (BHP Billiton, 2005). Williamson et al. (2011) define fatigue as a biological drive for recuperative rest. Sleepiness and fatigue are related, and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, sleepiness, more specifically, can be defined as sleep propensity, or a person’s tendency to fall asleep (Hossain et al., 2003; Shen, Barbera, and Shapiro, 2006).Increasing levels of fatigue and sleepiness are associated with lapses in attention, errors, response slowing, fluctuations in alertness and effort, and impaired attention, working memory, long-term memory, decision-making, and creativity (Alhola and Polo-Kantola, 2007; van Dongen and Dinges, 2000). Fatigue is also associated with adverse effects on mood and impulsive behaviours (Alhola and Polo- Kantola, 2007; Minkel et al., 2011; Schwarz et al., 2013). It is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is commonly identified as a causal or contributing factor in many accidents and injuries (Schutte, 2009). Fatigue can also lead to long-term health problems, including digestive problems, heart disease, stress, and mental illness (Shaw, 2003)."

"As part of the planning system at each division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, the Mine Planning Department is required to produce a detailed production schedule for each shaft.Because of the difficulties in producing a schedule which satisfies all the mining constraints, and because of the large clerical effort involved, the full range of possible schedules can never be considered.It has been found possible to produce a schedule using linear programming which satisfies the majority of the many varied mining constraints. Computer programs have been written to enable the mine planning department to use this mathematical system without assistance.The system has a large degree of flexibility to enable the planner to include conditions which cannot be incorporated readily in the linear program. This system permits the more efficient production and evaluation of schedules and reduces the amount of clerical effort."
