Miners, like many skilled blue-collar workers, are not traditional learners. They have not generally been successful in classroom-type settings, preferring to learn on the job in a hands-on environment. U.S. miners are required to have annual safety training, but they rarely view this positively. In fact, it has been called “safety jail” by many of them, who regard it as a time to get a little extra sleep. The challenge then, was to find a way to develop effective safety training for these people, particularly in view of the fact that their work is among the most dangerous of all occupations. Miners are born story tellers. They share “near-miss” stories, stories about master miners they have known, and stories about how things used to be. These stories not only pass along information about what will happen if a miner fails to respect the mining environ-ment, they also instruct listeners in the culture of mining and the values it embraces. Stories, it seems, are a way to get safety messages to miners, especially inexperienced ones, and using older, wiser miners in these stories is an obvious choice. This paper will discuss how the training videos created to get safety messages to miners were developed, how “master miners” and story lines were chosen, and how the resulting videos have been received in the mining industry.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) defines an independent contractor as “any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a cor-poration, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine.” Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines.

This report presents the results of a research project that gathered detailed information on the composition of the population of mobile equipment used in U.S. coal mines. A computerized data bank containing over 19,000 pieces of coal mine equipment in use in 1976 was prepared with a data retrieval program. Operator protective structure technology is reviewed; field problems experienced with ROPS are discussed.

Immediately following the capitulation of Germany in World War II, the German State was occupied by various allied forces, who supervised all indus- trial activities in the area. Coal production is vital to the industrial life of Germany, and most of the coal is mined in the American- and British- occupied zones of western Germany. The British-occupied zones include the Aachen and Ruhr districts, from which approximately 90 percent of the coal is obtained. Figure 1 is a map of the Ruhr district. Because of the magni- tude of the task of insuring an adequate supply of coal and the necessity for united action, it was deemed best to reorganize the coal-producing facilities in the British zone undor the joint supervision of American and British authorities. As a result, the UK/US Coal Control Group was established accord- ing to the organization plan indicated in figure 2. Headquarters for the group was established at Essen, in Villa Huegol, the prewar home of the Krupp family (fig. 3). One of the many problems recognized immediately by the UK/US Coal Control Group was the necessity of preventing disasters and reducing accidents to work- men in mines undor military-governmont control. Consequently, the United States Bureau of Mines was requested to furnish the services of qualified men to search for the hazards incident to coal mining and to prepare comprehensive reports on the results of their investigations. The authors, who wore selected for this task, spont about a year in Germany and visited all except a few of the smaller mince. Whereas their principal purpose was to investi- gate safety conditions, somo of the operating conditions and practices also wore studied. The results of the studies and investigations are embodied in this circular with the hope that some useful information will be disseminated to the mining industry of the United States, including supervisory officials, safety directors, engineers, and mine workmon.

Against the receding background of the October stock market crash and the December overhang of inventories, the economy began with a shaky start in 1988. As 1988 began, the Administration's estimate of real growth for 1988 had just been reduced from 3.5% to 2.4% and economists and other ob-servers were concerned that the expansion that was 5 years old might be near the end and that a recession might be around the corner. The ensuing moderately strong economic activity, however, belied all the negative signals that were evident earlier, and the real GNP continued to grow at an estimated 2.3% annual rate during the first quarter of 1988, extending the ongoing recovery into the sixth year (table 1.). The relatively accommodative policy of the Federal Reserve Board (the discount rate was cut by 0.25% in January), a strong performance by the export sector, and the revival of consumer spending were major forces underlying the economic strength. But as the quarter drew to a close, signs of tight capacity utilizations were apparent in many of the export and capital goods sectors, including textile, chemical, plastic, metal, and machinery. Employment was at a record high level while the unemployment rate was close to a historical low. Prices were rising at a faster pace than those of 1987, and the dollar resumed its slide after a brief recovery in January and February. These factors gave rise to the fears of higher inflation. Long-term interest rates increased, casting a pall over the prospect of a robust growth for the rest of the year.

Oxidation of mixed lanthanide solutions with ozone at pH 4.5 and at ambient temperature resulted in precipitation of 98 percent of the original cerium present. Corresponding cerium purity was increased from 50 to 98 percent. A second ozone oxidation-precipitation step produced cerium of 99.9 percent purity in high yield from the 98-percent-pure material. Alternately, ozonation at pH 6.5 and 85° C differentially precipitated cerium and rare-earth elements heavier than cerium and left 89 percent of the original lanthanum in solution at a purity of 95 percent. Subsequent recovery of cerium from the heavier rare-earth elements in the precipitate was accomplished by dissolving the precipitate in dilute mineral acid and reoxidizing the cerium with ozone at pH 4.5 and at ambient temperature. The filtrate contained an enriched praseodymium-neodymium-samarium-europium mixture that is amenable to separation by ion exchange or solvent extraction.

It is then deposited Into one of a pair of sumps. Water collecting in the sumps drains Into an adjoining pond for reuse. Thickened are In the sumps is removed and placed In piles.

The Federal Bureau of Mines reviewed the status of tungsten deposits of Utah in 1959. Industrial requirements of tungsten during emergencies have exceeded the domestic supply, and a knowledge of the sources of this strategic element may be helpful in the future. Tungsten occurs as the mineral scheelite in deposits that have been developed or explored on approximately 60 properties in 10 of the Great Basin ranges of Utah, none of which were being worked in 1957-59. Ores from most of the productive areas are similar in that they are contained in tactite deposits on or near the contact of calcareous and acidic intrusive rocks. The tactite ores consist predominantly of the silicate minerals garnet, epidote, and diopside and the carbonate rocks limestone or dolomite. Scheelite, where present, is disseminated irregularly in the tactite. Tungsten ores from Utah mainly have been produced from small deposits worked in World Wars I and II and the Korean campaign. The ores were either hand sorted to a grade ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 percent tungsten trioxide (W03) or were beneficiated in small mills to higher grade concentrates. The largest reserve appears to be in the area of the Notch Peak intrusive in the House Range, Millard County. A large part of the reserve in the House Range is mineralized tactite containing 0.2 to 0.3 percent W03. Research on flotation by the Bureau of Mines has indicated a method of concentrating scheelite in tactite ores that average 0.25 percent W03, with at least 85 percent recovery. The concentrate assays more than 5 percent W03 and can be processed into artificial scheelite ready for industrial use.

This information circular describes mining methods and practices at New Cornelia Branch, Phelps Dodge Corp., Ajo, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The New Cornelia mine (fig. 1) is at Ajo, a town in southwestern Arizona (fig. 2) on Arizona State Highway 85 in the western part of Pima County. The [oncentrator] and smelter are near the mine (fig. 3). Copper ore is mined, crushed, ground, and concentrated, and the concentrates are smelted. Copper is cast in anode form and sent to the Phelps Dodge Corp. refinery in El Paso, Tex.

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

"Whenever a manometer has been used for recording explosion pressures it has been calibrated under a series of static pressures. Whether the readings taken during the rapidly changing pressures of an explosion (dynamic pressures) truly represent the actual pressures therefore is an open question. The authors had hoped to solve this problem by conducting the calibration with the aid of known pressures, applied at about the ammo rate as in an explosion, for example, by means of a cylinder and piston, the piston being driven in by an eccentric cam at a rate which would be determined accurately by the shape and rate of revolution of the cam. If the rate of compression were great enough, then the pressure in the cylinder (to which the manometer is attached) could be calculated from the laws of adiabatic changes of pressure and volume. It seems highly probably, however, from H. T. Tizard's observations on pressure changes in a cylinder during rapid compression (55) 4/ that there is much heat loss, therefore pressure loss, in the very small interval of time during compression; although Tizard was able to estimate the amount thereof, he did so only by relying on his nanometer, which is exactly the procedure that the authors challenge on the grounds that the manometer was not standardized under the conditions of its use. Hence the authors were driven from this scheme of calibration to another, namely, comparing records of ono and the same explosion taken simultaneously on several instruments of as varied a type as possible. If 2 of a number of instruments agree, perhaps both are accurate; if 3 agree, probably each of the 3 is accurate; if 4 agree, it is almost certain each of the 4 is accurate.There was a second objective in the present work. If the Bureau of Mines and the B.C.D. (British Coal Dust) manometers differ in their records, then from a sufficiently comprehensive series of experiments it may be possible to coordinate the extensive results already obtained at the American and British stations.Thirdly, it was hoped to learn which is the best available instrument for observing the pressures of coal-dust and as explosions and, if possible, to indicate means for improvement in manometry."

In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

The local geology, the lack of recorded mining activity, and our field investigation and associated sampling indicate a low potential for mineral resources. Claim records and the literature review failed to show any lode or heavy mineral placer mining claim locations that are definitely in the area or anomalous mineral concentrations in the study area. Field investigations revealed no claims, prospects, or mineralized areas.

A U.S. Bureau of Mines study indicates over 200 million yd3 (153 million m3) of cinder resources occur in the Mount Washington Wilderness. No future demand for the deposits is anticipated. Based upon the geologic environment, the area is considered favorable for discovery of geothermal resources. INTRODUCTION The Mount Washington Wilderness, located about 32 mi (51 km) west of Bend, Oregon, contains 46,655 acres (18,881 ha) (fig. 1). A 6,300-acre (2,550-ha) addition on the northeast and east boundaries has been proposed by the Forest Service under RARE II. The U.S. Geological Survey made regional geological, geophysical, and geochemical surveys, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined, analyzed, and evaluated the economic potential of prospects and commercially important mineral resources.

This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the United States Bureau of Mines and made possible through the cooperation f many mining companies in the United States and foreign countries. The preparation of this paper follows a field study of top-slice mining during which the author visited and discussed with operating officials a large number of iron mines in the Lake Superior region. During this study special note was made of changes in top-slicing practice during the past decade, prior to which the author had acquired several years experience with the method through active connection with a number of mines employing top slicing.

Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person's body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm's center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. Field work began September 16, 1944, but was recessed from December 26, 1944, to gay 15, 1945, because of heavy snows, and was suspended July 12, 1945, when rehabilitation of the New York tunnel workings was completed to the point desired.In its program of exploration of Mineral deposits, the Bureau of Lines has as its promary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as seen .as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. "This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Mines as part of a program of the Solid Fuels Administration to encourage the utilization of anthracite fines, the objective being to determine the practicability of using anthracite fines in the manufacture of packagedThe experimental loss of packaged fuel covered by this report were made at a commercial plant using the Glenn Smith process and ordinarily making packaged fuel from Pocahontas screenings. These lots included several made from straight antimacite mines and others made from various blends of anthracite fines with four different bituminous coals. In all cases an asphalt binder was used. Determinations of the physical properties and the cobustion characteristics o the various samples of packaged fuel were made by the. Bureau of Mines at the Central Experiment Station.The physical tests indicated that a packaged fuel of sufficient strength for ordinary handling can be made from straight anthracite coal or from a wide variety of blends of anthracite fixes with bitunimous coal, using asphaltic binder. However the combustion tests indicated that packaged fuel made from anthracite alone tended to crumble excessively during burning and that as much as 30 to 50 percent of a caking coal may be required In the mixture to produce a block having satisfactory combustion characteristics.The authors wish to acknowledge the. splendid cooperation of Messrs.
