Nitrogenase activity (C2H2 reduction) was found to be associated with the following grasses in the field: Agropyron dasystachyum, Agropyron smithii, Aristida purpurea, Oryzopsis hymenoides and Stipa comata. Uptake of fixed nitrogen was also demonstrated for these grasses. Two unidentified nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated, one from Stipa comata and one from Aristida purpurea. Cynodon dactylon and Agropyron cristatum were successfully inoculated with the unknown isolate obtained from Stipa comata. The inoculated plants exhibited nitrogenase activity (C2 H2 reduction) whereas uninoculated controls gave negative results.

Longwall mines typically use some form of standing support for secondary roof support in longwall tailgate entries. Although there have been several new support products developed for this application, there remains no universal design criteria to optimize the application of these support technologies. The requirement for optimization and proper support selection is to understand the degree of control that the support has on the ground behavior. The ground reaction curve and numerical modeling was used to evaluate the impact of standing support on ground behavior. LaModel was used to evaluate the impact of standing support on main roof and floor behavior and pillar yielding. The conclusion drawn from this study was that standing supports do not have sufficient capacity to control main roof or floor loading or prevent the resulting convergence of the tailgate entry. However, it is imperative that this “uncontrollable convergence” be considered in the support design to prevent premature failure of the support. A FLAC model was used to evaluate the near-seam roof and floor behavior in conjunction with the global vertical and horizontal stresses. The model suggests that standing roof supports can have some impact on the ground behavior as the elastic response of the rock is exceeded and rock structure deteriorates from the stress concentrations that develop around the tailgate opening. During this phase, the capacity and stiffness of the standing support can be critical to the stability of the opening, as eventually the rock mass will be transformed into a partially detached structure whose weight must be supported by the standing support. This work is part of a ground control program of research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) aimed at improving mine safety by reducing roof fall injuries and fatalities.

One of the primary methods for analyzing roof stability in underground mines is the age-old method of “roof sounding” where a miner taps on the roof and listens for the hollow sound of loose blocks of rock. This paper looks at the feasibility of using noncontact laser-based vibration measurements to detect roof fall hazards with the ultimate vision of improving, expanding and automating procedures for mine roof inspection. Vibration measurements made on loose blocks of rock in underground mines are summarized and compared to estimates of fundamental resonance frequencies for rock slabs of the size responsible for highly hazardous “skin failures.” Both laser Doppler vibrometry and full-field interferometric methods are examined and are considered to be feasible methods for detecting anomalous vibrations in loose roof rocks. Results from simple laboratory experiments using laser vibrometry demonstrate some of the proposed application concepts. While considered a challenge to move these techniques from the laboratory to heavy industrial or outdoor environments, the potential for success in the current application is enhanced by the reduced requirements of qualitative analyses.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health re­searchers conducted a study to investigate the human response issues related to wearing a self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR). The goal was to develop training to educate miners on what they could expect from their units during an escape. Subjects included miners who had experience wearing SCSRs, manu­facturers, and researchers. Results identified nine key areas of concern: (1) starting the unit, (2) unit heat, (3) induction of coughing, (4) unit taste, (5) difficulty in breathing while wearing the unit, (6) quality of the air supplied, (7) nose clips, (8) goggles, and (9) the behavior of the breathing bag. In addition, researchers reviewed the literature on human response under duress. This article describes the expectations training program, which comprises the findings of the SCSR study and what is known about the normal human response in an emergency. The authors present background on SCSRs and the SCSR switchover procedure mandated in the recent federal Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, which provided the impetus for the expectations training. High-pressure shrouded sprays were first tested on a bench to determine air-moving capability and dust collection efficiency. The bench-scale tests indicated that at 500 psi and above, the dust collection efficiency, when sampled downstream of a water eliminator, was about 99 pet for two types of nozzles. However, for the same water flow, the induced airflow was about three times greater in one type than in another. Since the only difference in the nozzles was the spray angle, this factor was important in air movement through a shrouded spray. Full-scale model mine tests were then conducted to determine the reduction in dust concentration behind the line curtain and at the operator position produced by high-pressure sprays in a shroud. The shroud was mounted on top of the boom of a model continuous miner, and high-pressure (greater than 500 psi) sprays were installed inside the shroud. The inlet of dusty air to the shroud was open toward the face and the outlet toward the exhaust line curtain. The high-pressure sprays were compared with conventional sprays mounted at the head of the continuous miner and directing water toward the face. The difference at the operator position (opposite side of brattice) was significant in that, under certain conditions, with conventional sprays an increase in respirable dust concentration of 471 pet was noticed compared with dry operation due to rollback from face. High-pressure shrouded sprays, on the other hand, decreased the dust concentrations at the operator position (opposite side of brattice) by 28.2 pct.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research to evaluate explosion blast effects on mine ventilation stoppings at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). After mine explosion accidents, MSHA conducts investigations to determine the cause(s) as a means to mitigate or eliminate future occurrences. As part of these post-explosion investigations, the condition of underground stoppings, including the debris from damaged stoppings, are documented as evidence of the strength and the direction of the explosion forces. The LLEM data showed that a total pressure of 52 kPa (7.6 psi) destroyed the solid concrete block stopping, ~36 kPa (~5.2 psi) destroyed the hollow-core concrete block stopping, and 9 kPa (1.3 psi) destroyed the steel panel stopping. These results will assist investigators in determining the explosion forces that destroy or damage stoppings during actual coal mine explosions.

ALTHOUGH MANYSTUDIES HAVE SHOWN an association between operating heavy construction equipment and symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), little research has been performed that systematically characterizes the exposure of operating engineers to ergonomic hazards. This study evaluated: 1) vibration at the seat/operator interface;2) transmissibility of vibration in the Z-axis; 3) psychophysical ratings of vibration level and vibration discomfort; and 4) postural requirements of the job. Results indicate that the digging operation had higher levels of total weighted acceleration than high- or low-idling conditions. Transmissibility data showed that the seat amplified vibration, particularly in the lower frequencies. Seats demonstrated that they may not be sufficient in protecting operators from long-term effects of vibration exposure. High positive correlation was found among subjective ratings (vibration discomfort and vibration level), but moderate positive correlation was found between subjective ratings and quantitative vibration levels. Postural evaluations revealed that the operators were required to assume awkward postures of the neck, shoulder and trunk while performing their jobs. Work-related injuries and illnesses pose a continuing threat to the health and well-being of American workers. The construction industry has been historically recognized as having higher rates of fatality, injury and illness than other industries (McVittie285+; BLS). In 1994, an estimated 218,800 lost-work-day injuries were reported in the construction industry (BLS). Construction also had the second-highest incidence rate for sprains and strains. Although the industry has made progress since then, injuries and illnesses, including MSDs, continue to because for concern.

The main objective of occupational health and safety research is to minimize or eliminate the events that may cause fatal or non-fatal injuries to human workers. A commonly used technique is to devise an “incident prevention plan”, which is more often the product of thorough investigations of past reported incident events. Incident documentation and methodical reporting and systematic and thorough data collection, often help identify the root cause of the incident – in other words, the etiology of the incident. These retrospective analyses of the incidents can efficiently identify the future steps to take to achieve the objective of minimizing occurrence of “events of interest”. This paper introduces a novel technique – “Taxonomic Analysis”, which identifies the root causes of an event (an incident in this case) and can provide future direction for corrective measures to reduce the probability of occurrence of the event. A taxonomic analysis involves systematic and organization of data based on observation, description, and classification. This paper utilizes the rock fall related incident narratives, available with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database (1984-1999), for a taxonomic analysis. The study found that 67.6% of groundfall incidents occurred in supported areas with the remainder (32.4%) in unsupported areas. Some form of rock mass failure appears to cause about 50% of groundfall incidents, although in 39.7% of the overall groundfall incidents or two-thirds of those involving rock mass failure, the exact nature of the rock mass failure could not be determined from the narratives. Human activities factors such as scaling or barring down, drilling or bolting, and setting timbers or cribbing accounted for another 34.5% of the groundfall incidents. Finally, support system failures made up the remaining 15.5%. Results from this taxonomic analysis may suggest focus areas toward which preventive measures and future research activities could concentrate.

Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Com-munity (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to its ex-colonies in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus, indirectly, raw materials production). There is an important reason for this since Western Europe lies somewhere between Japan at one extreme and the United States and the U.S.S.R. at the other extreme as regards the availability of natural resources.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has pursued quartz analysis for the specialized ?lter assemblies of a new worker-wearable personal dust monitor (PDM). The PDM is a real-time instrument utilizing a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM®). Standard ?berglass TEOM ?lters cannot accommodate the desired P-7 infrared analytical method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Novel ?lter materials were tested with the objective of demonstrating this type of analysis. Low temperature ashing and spectrometric examination were employed, revealing that nylon ?ber candidate ?lters left minimal residual ash and produced no signi?cant spectral interference. Avoiding titanium dioxide in all ?lter materials proved to be a key requirement. Fine quartz particulates were collected on prototype ?lters in a Marple chamber, either open-faced or through PDMs during test runs. The ?lters were then subjected to MSHA P-7 analysis and the spectrometrically based analytical results for quartz mass were compared to reference measurements. Also, PDM instrumental mass readings were compared to ?lter gravimetric measurements. Results suggest that the P-7 method is adaptable to variations in ?lter materials and that quartz dust analysis by the P-7 method when utilizing the new ashable PDM ?lters can have accuracy and precision within 10% and 4%, respectively. This is within the declared 13% accuracy and 7–10% precision of the P-7 method itself. Instrument mass readings had modest positive bias but met NIOSH accuracy criteria. Continued work with specialized PDM ?lters is merited, as they are a new type of TEOM sample amenable to ashing analysis of particulates.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has identified ore pass hazards as a significant safety problem in underground metal mines in the United States injury and fatality data show that many injuries are related to pulling or freeing ore pass chutes and structural failures of control gates and ore pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating these hazards and developing methods to improve safety during transport of ore and waste. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate chute and control gate response to various material loading scenarios. Results from computer models indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than theory predicts. Static and dynamic loads were measured in a laboratory setting using scaled ore (sass mock-ups. Field tests were initiated in an active ore pass to determine actual static and dynamic loads. Field data were compared to computer results and indicated that impact and total static loads were substantially less than the computer model results suggested. Damping factors, normal and shear stiffness, and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads.

Standing crib supports have been applied in underground mining programs to resist large roof movements and sustain high-loads. The strength and deformation capability of these systems has been documented under both laboratory and field conditions. The parameter that has not been examined and is not well understood is the effect that a crib or other types of standing support has on the primary and secondary bolting systems. A crib support system with low system stiffness may allow large amounts of closure and deformation and cause the bolting systems to yield or even fail. Conversely, cribs or standing support that are too stiff may experience brittle or buckling failures, negating the advantage of the intrinsic supports previously installed. Utilizing a combination of field measurements and 3-dimensional finite element modeling techniques, the relationship between system stiffness and the subsequent performance of the installed bolting system is evaluated. Additionally, a simple method for calculating the combined system stiffness for standing supports, when using materials with different strengths such as steel, concrete, wood, etc., is presented.

As longwall shields are lowered in preparation for advance, dust from the canopy falls directly into the air stream with the potential of becoming entrained. Historical dust sampling data from the early 1980s shows that shield advance contributed an average of 12 percent to the airborne respirable dust levels found on longwalls in the United States. Data from the 1990s indicates that shield dust liberation had increased to an average of 23 percent. Increased longwall production levels over this time resulted in the need to move a larger number of shields during each shift, while an increase in air velocities on the face was also occurring. These factors combine to suggest that greater quantities of shield dust are being entrained into the face air. A series of controlled laboratory tests were conducted in a test stand simulating shield dust entrainment to evaluate changes in airborne respirable dust levels at different air velocities. Significant differences in respirable dust entrainment were observed. The test facility, test methodology, and dust sampling results will be reviewed and discussed

An investigation was made to determine the mechanical properties of oil shale at elevated temperatures and confining pressures, the thermal properties at elevated temperatures, and to provide mathematical models for mine design for in situ oil shale retorting. A review of current activity in in situ retorting is included with a comprehensive list of references. Tests were run at temperatures from 20°C to 500°C and confining pressures to 1500 psi with shale of 10 to 30 gallons per ton. A major loss of strength occured in heating 140°C with a partial regain from 380°C to 500°C. Higher grade shale had lower compressive strength. Elastic properties showed large variations. Brazilian tensile strength showed a similar temperature sensitivity as the compressive strength. Equations were developed for each property in terms of grade, temperature and pressure. Thermal, electrical and acoustical properties showed anomalies through the temperature range. Creep is a major factor in overall deformation of heated shale. Oil shale was found to be an excellent insulator. Loss of pillar support area at 800 hours of heating would be about 10 percent. Good correlation was found between a finite element model using the developed properties and an in situ heater test.

The other South Pacific islands included in this chapter extend from Papua New Guinea, east of the Indonesian Province of Irian Jaya on the island of New Guinea, to Fiji, straddling the 180° meridian. A number of islands have been omitted from this chapter owing to the fact that their only mineral production remained insignificant to the economy of the respective country or territory. These islands include the French overseas territories of French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna Islands; the independent states of Kiribati, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu; the New Zealand freely associated state of the Cook Islands; and the New Zealand dependency of Niue. The mineral production that did exist in these islands was limited to construction materials such as coral reef limestone, crushed stone, and sand and gravel in minor quantities used solely for domestic consumption. FIJI Fiji, an archipelago in Melanesia consisting of 300 islands ranging from tiny coral atolls, cays, and rugged coral limestone islets to the larger mountainous, volcanic islands of Kadavu, Taveuni, Vanua Levu, and Viti Levu, straddles the 180° meridian about 1,800 kilometers south of the Equator. Fiji has been an independent member of the British Commonwealth of Nations since October 10, 1970.

Whole body vibration is known to affect movement accuracy [1], however little is known about changes in the organization of movement and movement strategies used to limit the influences of perturbations. The specific aim of this work is to analyze the motion and coordination of upper body segments of seated operators performing reaching tasks under whole-body sinusoidal vibration exposure and simulated vehicle ride motion. The long-term objective is to model reach coordination and predict the dynamic behavior of the upper body motion under vehicle vibration exposure. Method The reach task consisted of pointing with the right hand index finger to targets located on touch screens placed in front of the subject, 45° overhead and 90° to the right in the mockup cabin of an HMMWV placed on a 6 DOF ride motion simulator. The task was performed under stable (no vibration) and vibration (sinusoidal vibration or simulated ride motion) conditions. A motion capture system was used to record kinematic data of reflective markers to recreate body link trajectories. Joint angles (torso, shoulder and elbow; Figure 1) were then computed using quaternions. Coordination between body links was defined as a) the joints angle-versus-angle relationships between the upper arm and lower arm, and b) the joint motion onset relationships between torso, upper arm and lower arm in the time domain. Results Angle–versus-angle relationships. The relationship between upper arm vs. lower arm angle and torso vs. upper arm angle for a far forward reaching movement in the stable (solid lines) and vibration conditions (dotted lines) are illustrated in Figure 2. Fig 2A compares the control condition with a 4 Hz lateral vibration while Fig 2B compares the control condition with a 6 Hz vertical vibration. It appears that under vibration exposure the reduced upper arm extension is compensated by an increase in torso flexion. This effect is seen in the last phase of the movements (encircled areas). In addition, the lower arm extension is delayed under 6 Hz vertical vibration (Fig 2B left panel). Time of joint motion onset. The New Hope field was selected for study by; Bureau of lanes engineers because many problems met by, the operators during development and operation were unique to petroleum-engineering experience. Solving these problems is believed to have doubled the ultimate recovery of oil from the field. Since the discovery well was 'completed, in April 1943, an oil-productive area of 4,950 acres- has been delineated by the drilling of 64 wells, four of which were dry holes. Four oil-bearing reservoirs - the Bacon oolitic limestone, and the Hill, Pittsburg) and Elledge sandstones, all, in the Trinity group of the Lower Cretaceous series-- have been penetrated at depths ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet. Three of these reservoirs were found to be closed-type or solution gas-drive reservoirs, and one - the Hill - was an open-type or water-drive reservoir. During the course of the study, the Tide Water Associated, Oil Co. and -Seaboard al Co. of Delaware made available to the writers all well records, electric logs; and coring, production,, and pressure data. The ,writers performed Certain field and laboratory- tests on cores of ,the reservoir racks and' samples -of the reservoir Oils. Analyses of cores from the four reservoirs showed average .porosities ranging from 10 to 18 percent, average permeabilities of 17 to 297 millidarcys, and -average 'connate water contents ranging from 25.4 to 30.6 percent. Subsurface and recombined samples of reservoir oils indicated that the oils in the Bacon Hill, and Pittsburg reservoirs contained ,206 to 422 cubic feet of gas in solution per barrel initially, and that the, reservoir oils were undersaturated with gas. No samples' of oil from the Elledge reservoir were analyzed, and because of meager data this reservoir was not studied in detail. 4 The presence of free 'gas' or a' gas cap, however, indicated that the oil in the Elledge reservoir was saturated with gas. The rapid decline in pressures in- the' four reservoirs during the 'first year of operation alarmed the operators and provoked them to investigate the reservoir conditions to determine the cause.
