Carbonyl sulfide (COS) was decomposed to sulfur and CO in a silent electrical discharge. A threshold of about 4 kv at 60 Hz was required to dissociate the gas in a laboratory ozonizer at 790 torr with electrode gaps between 1 and 5.5 mm. Above the threshold value, the reaction rate increased with increasing voltage with helium or nitrogen diluent. With the latter diluent, higher voltages had to be applied to obtain the same yield in the 4-to 12-kv range. The COS decomposition rate increased with COS concentration, but a saturation value was reached at about 10 pct COS. The reaction rate decreased at low linear gas velocities as obtained at lower gas flows, larger electrode gaps, or larger reactor volumes. Increasing gas temperature also decreased the decomposition rate. The presence of solid adsorbents such as quartz wool, bauxite, or charcoal had no significant effect on the reaction rate. The addition of S02 did not affect the COS decomposition rate, but small amounts of water decreased the reaction rate. Over 50 pct of the COS was decomposed at room temperature and atmospheric pressure in a l7-kv ozonizer using a gas containing 0.9 pct COS in helium flowing at a rate of 0.3 liter/min. The average current was less than 5 ma. This method has possible application in eliminating the toxic air pollutant, COS, which is generated in petroleum refineries and in processes involving reactions between sulfurous and carbonaceous materials. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resource potential of the Log Cabin Saddlebag, Hall Natural Area, Horse Meadow, and Tioga Lake RARE II areas in Mono County, California. These areas, along the east slope of the Sierra Nevada, are underlain by Paleozoic metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Log Cabin Mine and Saddlebag Lake roof pendants. The roof pendants are in Cretaceous granitic rocks. Pleistocene volcanic flows cap some of the older rocks, and glacial till and outwash locally cover the bedrock. The region was eroded by alpine glaciers. Four parts of the Log Cabin Saddlebag area have moderate gold and silver resource potential. Moderate potential for gold and silver resources was identified in one part of the Hall Natural Area and low potential for tungsten and molybdenum in two other parts (fig. 1).

Multiple subject classification has increased the total number of entries to almost 5,000. Helium citations are listed by 23 major classifications. The number of subclassifications has been greatly increased to minimize the time required for literature search. The use of automatic data processing has been extended in compiling the bibliography.

Introduction The blasting capabilities of commercial explosives are often rated according to their loading densities and detonation velocities. Both the density and velocity are relatively easily measured, the values of which can be used for determining the approximate detonation pressure developed by an explosive during any given set of blasting conditions (1-5). Knowledge of the actual rate of detonation attained at all points along a charger's length also is considered to give a good indication of how well the explosive is functioning. Many factors affect the density and velocity and have been thoroughly discussed by various authors (4, 6-12). For recording velocities several methods are available, but the resistance-wire, or probe, continuously recording technique has the distinct advantage of providing a record of the complete progress of an explosive reaction from the time it first initiates. Figure 1 is a copy of a typical record obtained by the procedure with certain significant information indicated. The theory and applications of the method are extensively covered in the literature so need not be reviewed for this report (13-18). Only the specific equipment and procedure employed for this investigation are presented.

In deposits of the John Muir Wilderness, tungsten is the principal metallic element. Gold, silver, copper, and molybdenum could be recovered as by-products from most of the tungsten deposits. More than 1 million tons (0.9 million t) of tungsten resources are estimated to be along the fringes of metasedimentary roof pendants. Gold-silver deposits and silver-copper-lead-zinc deposits with small resources are found at several localities. The association of metal deposits with the intrusive-metasedimentary rock contacts and the widespread existence of these contacts, suggests additional resources exist. The area has no known potential for coal, oil, gas, or geothermal energy.

This publication is designed to be helpful in promoting health and safety in tunneling and related operations. The format has been selected and arranged to provide a condensed guide for safety personnel, inspection and investigative agencies, design and project engineers, and others responsible for the health and safety of workmen. All the precautionary measures recommended are based on actual conditions observed, from investigations of fatal or serious accidents, and from research conducted to find ways and means of alleviating hazards and unhealthful conditions. Many of the recommended rules are included in State laws and in the general safety requirements of the construction industry. Explanatory, descriptive, and qualifying information has been largely omitted in this publication to keep basic data in more useful and compact form. Included in the appendixes are special precautions for gassy (methane atmospheres) tunnels and tunnels where petroleum products are encountered.

Tungsten, silver, lead, zinc, and placer gold occur in the Cucamonga B RARE II area (no. B5174). A strata-bound, scheelite-bearing zone at the Blue Diamond prospect (fig. 1, no. 1) contains an estimated 16,000 tons (15,000 t) of identified, subeconomic resources averaging 0.16 percent tungsten trioxide (W03). There is a high potential for discovering additional tungsten resources at this property. The California-Hercules prospect (fig. 1, no. 5) ha; a mineral occurrence which contains an estimated 1,000 tons (900 t) of tactite averaging 1.3 oz silver per ton (45 g/t), 0.75 percent lead, and 0.72 percent zinc. Another occurrence, at the Blew Jordam Prospect (fig. 1, no. 4) has an estimated 100 tons (90 t) of tactite averaging 10 oz silver per ton (340 ,/t), 3.75 percent zinc, and 2.3 percent lead. There is a moderate potential for discovering silver, lead, and zinc resources at these prospects, which are in metamorphic pendants. There are a few lode gold prospects in the area (fig. 1, nos. 3, 11, 14) are on geologic structures which parallel the San Andreas Fault, northeast of the area. These deposits are not well exposed and have been historically unproductive. Placer gold in area B occurs locally in the beds of intermittent tributaries to Lytle Creek (fig. 1, nos. 10, 12, 13) in concentrations as high as $1.17 per cu yd ($1.53/cu m, at a gold price of $450 per troy oz). The deposits have no significant volume, but could be utilized for recreational panning and suction dredging. In the Cucamonga C RARE II area (No. C5174) placer gold occurrences locally contain as much as $1.23 per cu yd ($1.61/cu m). However, gravel containing the gold appears to be limited to stream beds, and does not occur in sufficient quantity to constitute resources. Recreational panning and dredging also may occur in this area.

This paper on the square-set system of mining embodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the Bureau of Mines general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the paper were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from Information Circulars prepared by consulting engineers to the Bureau on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The square-set system of mining is very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the United States. It is mainly employed for extracting relatively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and-fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50 per cent of the ore may be extracted by square-setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage is mined yearly by square-setting, principally in the Western States.

Apparatus providing simultaneous differential thermal analysis, thermo-gravimetry, and evolved gas analysis, has been developed by the Bureau of Mines specifically for thermal study of oil shale and other solid, natural fuels. The apparatus is described in detail, and simultaneous analyses on a single sample of an oil shale mineral, nahcolite, and a thermal analysis demonstration compound, calcium oxalate monohydrate, are presented to demonstrate the instrument's capabilities.

This final report describes the work performed by Gulton Battery Corporation under USBM Contract No. HO-112033, entitled "Research and Development on Lithium-Nickel Fluoride Batteries For Mint Life Support Equipment". The lithium-nickel fluoride couple was chosen For this investigation because of its high theoretical energy density (626 Wh/lb), its ability to operate at ambient temperatures and the fact that it showed promise as a secondary system. The theoretical energy density of the lithium-nickel fluoride couple is ten times greater than that of the widely used lead-acid battery and three times greater than the silver-zinc battery which has the highest theoretical energy density of the commercially available secondary systems. The experimental program first evaluated the cell components individually. The results of these studies then formed the basis for investigations of cell performance using experimental three-plate cells. These cells consisted of one nickel-fluoride and two lithium electrodes. All work was performed in a glove box under an argon atmosphere which was sufficiently pure to maintain the shiny appearance on freshly prepared lithium surfaces. The major portion of the work effort was concerned with the nickel fluoride electrode. Binder, conductive diluent, fabrication technique, as well as the nickel fluoride active material itself, were considered. Criteria for binder materials were established and six classes of materials encompassing thirteen binders were evaluated. The candidate materials were initially screened for appropriate chemical and physical properties and finally evaluated in three.-plate cells, Two epoxy powders emerged as the most promising binders. Two types of conductive diluent were evaluated. The first is a carbon black of low bulk density and high surface area. This material is a good conductive diluent; however, electrodes fabricated with it lacked good mechanical strength. It was hypothesized that a uni¬form, small particle size, low specific surface area would improve the mechanical properties of the electrodes. Therefore, two samples of graphicic materials, milled to uniform powders in the one-to-ten micron range were evaluated. Electrodes prepared with the graphitic materials had superior mechanical properties, However, their electrical performance was significantly poorer and voltage losses of 0.2 to 0.3 volts were observed. Several electrolyte solutions were evaluated. N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone was tested but found to be incompatible in the presence of lithium. Lithium perchlorate, lithium hexafluoroarsenate, and lithium bromide were tested as two-component electrolytes in propylene carbonate solvent and their performance compared with that of the single electrolyte solutions, Lithium perchlorate gave the best performance. Lithium hexafluoroarsenate was also evaluated in methyl formate and appears to give equivalent performance. The lithium perchlorate-propylene carbonate system is preferred as it is easier to handle and less expensive.

Optimized Operator Compartment layouts based on previous Bureau of Mines activities in standardization and optimization of controls were designed and installed in three operating vehicles. Two National Mine Service 48A-36 TorKars were modified in production prior to delivery to the Quarto Mining Company. An Elkhorn AR-4 scoop owned by Adanac Coal Company was modified in a local rebuild shop. The modified vehicles were then evaluated underground under normal production conditions for a 60 day period. Vehicle operators and management appear well satisfied with the compartment modifications.

The material for this paper was collected for the most part by C. H. Beal during the years 1916, 1917, and 1918. Many of the conclusions reached in regard to the life of oil wells have already been published by the Bureau of Mines 1 but those presented in this paper deal particularly with the theoretical aspects of oil production. The report discusses some of the fundamental factors governing oil production, taking up first the conditions affecting the. amount of oil in the oil sand, then those factors that control the rate of production of oil wells, and then discusses several related problems, most of which deal particularly with the effect of the production of one well on that of another.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting research to optimize the design and utilization of mine roof support systems. An objective of these efforts is to evaluate the mechanical and structural responses of various mine roof support systems under simulated load conditions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Underground studies are also made to evaluate the in situ behavior of support structures. The purpose of this report is to document practical applications for longwall face and gate road supports that have resulted from these studies. This report is not intended to be an all-inclusive manual on every aspect of support utilization, but it does provide a comprehensive assessment of practical considerations relating to the mechanical and structural behavior of these support systems. Forty-six recommendations are made to provide assistance to mine operators in the testing, selection, and utilization of longwall face and gate road supports. Many of these recommendations offer innovative solutions to everyday problems faced by mining personnel in the control of ground in longwall mining.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a simple fire-retardant treatment for wood. The treatment involves preheating the wood surface at high heat flux (~0.6 cal/cm2 sec) to form an in situ surface char layer (~3 mm thick) on the wood. Laboratory-scale fire tests show that the precharring technique improves the fire-resistance of virgin wood by decreasing and delaying generation of volatile gases through thermal insulation effect of the surface prechar layer.

Under the seventh 5-year plan (1986-90), the Chinese Government continued to implement reform and to open the country further to the outside world in order to accelerate the growth of its national economy. As a result of expanded foreign economic exchanges and domestic achievements in education, science and technology, and cultural and public health undertakings, the national economy was strengthened. In 1988, there was impressive growth in the Chinese economy. The gross national product (GNP) grew by 11.2070 reaching $373.4 billion; 2 the national income grew by 11.4070 to $310.9 billion. The major problem in the Chinese economy was the imbalance between high demand and insufficient supply. Chronic shortages resulted in price increases and high inflation, which averaged 19% for China as a whole and about 30% in urban areas. Macroeconomic stability took precedence over market-oriented reform initiative. Because of rapidly growing inflation, the Government re-imposed price controls and rationing in major cities in the fall of 1988. China continued to be a major world producer of minerals, metals, and fuels. Output of the principal commodities continued to rise. The largest in-crease in production was salt which rose 24% in output in 1988; followed by sulfuric acid, 14%; cement, 12%; soda ash, 9%; caustic soda, 7%; and steel, 6%. For fossil fuels, the increase in output of natural gas was 14% in 1988; followed by coal, 3%; and crude oil, 2%. The output of electricity by thermal-fired powerplants rose by 9% while that for hydroelectric power-plants rose 7%. Although China's overall energy output has increased annually since 1980, the growth in demand continued to outstrip the supply.

Quickly and cheaply consolidate underground slimes to facilitate their use as backfill and permit their easy handling for other reasons. Approach: The slurry containing slimes is pumped into active stopes and electrokinetically dewatered to provide consolidated back fill. How It Works: To densify slimes electro-kinetically two electrodes are placed in the material to be dewatered and densified. Typically, the electrodes are pieces of wire mesh fencing. One is placed on the bottom, and the other is suspended in the slurry near the surface. Figure 1 is a simplified section of a test. A d-c voltage of 100 to 400 volts is applied across the slurry. This causes the solid particles which are in suspension in the water (usually these are negatively charged) to migrate toward the anode; simultaneously, the water moves toward the cathode. Water immediately adjacent to the negatively charged solid particle surfaces contains an excess of dissolved positive ions. A 1981 U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation indicates the Panamint Dunes Wilderness Study Area (WSA) has one active (intermittent) mine,--borrow pit MS 242 owned by the California Department of Transportation (Cal Trans). This mine produces cinders for road base and traction grit. It contains about 900,000 tons of inferred reserves. Examination and sample analyses indicate the Panamint Dunes deposit, covering about 480 acres of the WSA, may have silica resources and the Green Quartz Claim may have copper resources. Carbonate rocks occur in the WSA, but stone resources have not been identified. Adjacent to the WSA, the Big Four Mine contains 35,000 tons of inferred subeconomic zinc-lead-silver resources, and may have additional resources. Sample analyses indicate the Apple 1 Claim, also adjacent to the WSA, may have silver-lead-zinc resources.
