Internal textures of manganese nodules from Clarion-Clipperton zone of northeastern Pacific Ocean are classified into five textural zones: columnar-textured layered zone, cuspate-textured layered zone, cuspate-textured massive zone, cuspate-textured porous zone and massive- textured massive zone. Vernadite is the main constituent mineral in the columnar- and cuspate-textured layered zone. Buserite sometimes occurs in the cuspate-textured layered zone. The cuspate-textured massive zone is mainly composed of buserite. Todorokite is also associated with buserite in the massive-textured porous zone, where cuspates and globes are partially replaced by massive texture. In the massive-textured massive zone, todorokite, buserite and birnessite occur together. The analyzed elements of all zones are also classified into four elemental groups by the cluster analysis of correlation coefficients: Mn group, Cu-Ni-Mg group, Fe group and Si group. Mn group consists of Mn and K. Cu-Ni-Mg group consists of Cu, Ni, Zn, Mg and/or Ca, Na. Fe group consists of Fe, Co, Ti and/or Ca, P. Si group consists of Si and Al. Each textural zone is composed of three or four elemental groups. These four elemental groups are correlated with mineral composition, such as, Mn group with todorokite, Cu-Ni-Mg group with buserite, Fe group with Co-bearing iron-oxyhydroxide minerals, and Si group with silicates.

Based on geochronological data it was confirmed that hydrothermal discharge has an episodic character: active and inactive periods of the seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) formation alternate (Cherkashov et al., 2017). There is an assumption of correlation of the periods of magmatic and hydrothermal activity with the stages of glaciation (Lund et al., 2016). During the cold periods, the level of the ocean was reduced from 70 to 150 m depending on the glaciation scale (Spratt, Lisiecki, 2016). As a result, the hydrospheric pressure on the upper mantle decreased and could provide increased magmatic and hydrothermal activity (Lund, Asimow, 2011). This assumption is confirmed by the correlation of warming and cooling stages with increasing of hydrothermal input to the bottom sediment near hydrothermal fields. According to data (Lund et al., 2014, 2016; Middleton et al., 2015) the peaks of hydrothermal activity, expressed in the layers of metalliferous sediments at the East Pacific Rise and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, roughly correspond to the last two periods of cooling (20 and 60 ka). To test this hypothesis, we tried to compare the sequence of warm and cold periods in the Pleistocene with the dating of SMS reflecting the periods of hydrothermal activity. Results SMS samples were obtained from 12 sites within the Russian Exploration Area at the MAR segment 12-20°N. The results of dating 198 samples by the 230Th/U method demonstrated the absence of correlation between hydrothermal activity periods in different hydrothermal fields (Cherkashov et al., 2017). It was proposed that each field has its own evolutions scenario. Considering this point, only the oldest SMS dating for each field which fixed the beginning of hydrothermal activity was selected for comparison with the cold/warming periods.

In June of 2013, Odyssey Marine Exploration conducted sea trials of the newly installed SeaBat 7150 full-ocean multibeam sonar system on the M/V Dorado Discovery over the Fierberling Guyot in the northeast Pacific Ocean. Fieberling Guyot is located approximately 990 kilometers west of San Diego, California and it rises abruptly from the deep ocean floor (~4300 meters) to a minimum depth of approximately 438 meters. The SeaBat 7150 operates at two distinct frequencies, 24 kHz (shallow to 3000 meters) and 12 kHz (full-ocean depth greater than 2000 meters). Onboard operational data are managed by a suite of state-of-the-art software. A SQL Server 2012 database provides the highly specific management and visualization tools as ArcGIS 10, Micromine 2013, and Geobank 2013 database. The 7150 is mounted on a gondola one meter lower than on previous system and greatly reduces bubble interference. The 7150 generates 880 beams

The face of mining as we know is changing as mining companies all over the globe realize the reality of accessing the vast mineral wealth contained on, and under, our ocean floors. With some land based mineral deposits being fully exploited across the world, deep sea mining is set to revolutionize global approaches to the search for precious metals and other sought after minerals. Previously, the financial and technological implications of deep sea mining outweighed the benefits of access to the mineral rich deposits identified all around the world. The process of marine diamond mining off the west coast of southern Africa started in the late 1950s, and subsequently continued by De Beers to the present day, has proven to be an excellent proving ground for the development of technology and mining systems that ensure a sustainable and financially viable business.

Deep-sea mining is in the future perspective of mining industry and it is currently in the technological development phase. The focus of this study is on the electrical power system that provides sufficient energy for the mining equipment at the seafloor, excavating Seafloor Massive Sulfide (SMS) deposits. SMS deposits usually exist at water depths between 1500 m and 4000 m. Despite the similarities of SMS deposits excavation to the open-pit terrestrial mines, more energy is required to drill and crush the ores in the hyperbaric conditions [1], which can be done whether by static trench cutters [1] or by mobile mining crawlers [2]. In addition, the ores vertical transportation by subsea pumps requires several MW electrical power that can be supplied by all-electric subsea motors or hydraulically from water injection motors located on the surface. The power requirements can be fulfilled by an offshore or subsea power network. As the SMS mines are usually in remote locations, the straightforward solution will be an isolated offshore grid mounted on a vessel or platform similar to the most of offshore Oil & Gas projects. These power systems resemble the onshore microgrids for industrial purposes operating in island mode. However, in contrast with the onshore power networks, there are space and weight limitations in offshore infrastructures, which impose the design compactness to be a priority. In addition, having a very high reliability is necessary in the design approach of the offshore projects due to the extraordinary high expenses corresponding to repair and maintenance. The other design criterion is to improve the power system efficiency in order to reduce the size of the power equipment cooling apparatus, operational costs and CO2 emissions produced by diesel/LNG onboard generators. There are a few studies considering power system distribution for seafloor mining industry. Among them, [3] has investigated the AC and DC alternatives for SMS mining in 2400 m water depth by considering Solwara 1 project scenario introduced by Nautilus Minerals Inc. [2]. In this study, a power system design tool will be presented taking into account various water depth, power consumption levels, different distribution configurations (AC and DC) and the aforementioned design criteria.

"The exploitation of marine resources has enjoyed renewed interest with a completely new sector, that of the Deep Sea Mining of mineral resources in the seabed, that is now gaining momentum. Nevertheless, the significant environmental constraints represent a challenge for initiating these new activities, whether this is in terms of the knowledge of the concerned ecosystems or in terms of monitoring and minimizing the impact of these new activities. This paper presents 2 technologies that aim to respond to the expectations of the stakeholders in this area. The first consists of the real-time monitoring of installations/operations and their impact on the environment using the most modern underwater technologies and especially long-term deployment AUV based on AUV docking station solution and autonomous long term observatories. The second consists of a membrane allowing the confinement of an area, the reduction of the emission of particles in suspension and noise reduction.IntroductionDeep ocean environments have been explored since the mid-1800s. As the land-based reserves of hydrocarbons and minerals become depleted, increasing numbers of resourcebased projects are being proposed for shallow then deepwater environments. "We report here on current topics of our project, based on the results of recent cruises and laboratory analysis, about the diversity of compositions and configurations of the hydrogenetic ferromanganese deposits in several Northwestern Pacific Seamounts. This recent research has discovered important aspects of these deposits regarding the mode of variation with water depth, topography and substrate geology, possible bacterial mediation, temporal variation with age in mineralogy, and major and minor element chemistry. All cruises and analysis have been supported by the facilities and staff of the Japan Agency of Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal resources Corporation (JOGMEC), Geological Survey of Japan, and Kochi Core Center (KCC) using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), a monitored rock drilling system, dredges, and manned-submersibles in the NW Pacific seamounts,The results indicate that most of the rock outcrops on the slopes, shoulders, and much of flat tops are covered with maximum 10-cm thick crusts, but the thickness, metal content, and microstructural properties are not always uniform over the seamounts, but variable in space and time. The micro-stratigraphic description of whole-rock samples indicates a history of deposition and sedimentation, which control the diversity in bulk composition and abundance caused by the variable incorporation of iron-manganese precipitates into the deposits during variable environmental conditions. We conclude that hydrogenetic precipitation of iron-manganese oxide has taken place for more than 20 million years at a growth rate about 4-6 mm/my, in water depths below 1000m. The results indicate a fairly continuous and constant metal deposition since the middle Miocene age or older to the present. Our case study of geological sciences at a model seamount within the Japanese EEZ suggests that scientific knowledge is useful and essential in exploring mineral deposits, economic estimation, and designing systems, if supported by well-combined geological and oceanographic and biological research. The distribution map of ferromanganese deposits and geological map will be published soon in 2017 to be issued by the Geological Survey of Japan."

A shipboard research system capable of operating in waters of up to 2,000 meters has been designed and implemented by the Hawai'i Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) of the University of Hawai'i. It uses a remotely-operated ocean bottom survey camera system, an ROV, the Pisces V submersible, and a submersible emergency recovery system, all aboard the 222- foot R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa. All systems are operated from the stern of Ka'imikai with a mounted Caley telearm and articulated A-frame system. The system was designed for multipurpose use of the ship for launch and recovery of the Pisces V submersible on a lift recovery line (with or without diver assistance), or night-time operations with an electro-optical cable using either the HURL ocean floor sidescan or photo and video system operated at 10 meters above the ocean floor. The 1.14-inch diameter cable is also used to operate an ROV system. The garage/ROV system can also act as a submersible rescue system with a submersible lift capability. The ship is equipped with a SeaBeam and shallow penetration sediment profiling systems. This integrated system approach to deep ocean floor research will make it possible for HURL to carry out research pro- grams on seamount ocean resources and ocean chemistry and climate in Hawai'i and the equatorial Pacific.

One hundred ninety nine beach face sand samples from an equal number of beaches from the Mexican Pacific were studied. Based on petrological and chemical analysis some locations have been studied in more detail. Black sands from the following areas are discussed: (1) west Baja California Peninsula, where black sands rich in magnetite and ilmenite have maximum values of 50% iron and 14% titanium in the very fine sand fraction; (2) east Gulf of California, in its northern portion, the black sands show maximum values of 43% iron and 5% titanium in the fraction 2 to 4 0;-(3) the south Mexican Pacific, characterized mainly by medium sands, moderately well sorted, show that the fine sand fractions reach values of 35% iron and 41% titanium. X-ray fluorescence applied on selected samples constituted by feldsarenites and lithic feldsarenties, showed the presence of rare elements in some of the studied samples.

Many attempts have been made to design and build an AUV that is small, meets the sensing objectives and is cost effective. Many inventors have already designed smaller vehicles but the problem observed is an increased vehicle instability resulting in instrument instability where data gathered is not trustworthy. Additional problems include instrument weight to vehicle weight ratios and the lack of space for power storage and electrical components. The UFOceanic seeks to remedy these concerns by employing a completely different design and propulsion system. Still in the design stage ? now with a mock-up unit for testing, the results are encouraging. We have chosen a very low voltage embedded systems design using multiple PIC processors and fuzzy logic programming. We are designing the craft to rotate for stability and to provide friction reduction to minimize the need for instrument stability compensation and propulsion power. Additionally, we are looking and experimenting with a number of power plant drive systems including flywheels, GNP (plasma), fuel cells and more conventional systems. We of course plan for the UFOceanic to run for months at a time supported by a self-charging system.

From December 2004 through March of 2005 an extensive geophysical program was conducted to delineate polymetallic sulfide deposits in the Bismark Sea for a major mining concern. Deeply towed sidescan sonar, interferometric swath bathymetry, subbottom profiling, magnetic gradiometry, electrical resistivity, induced polarization. self-potential, gravimetry, water temperature/conductivity and towed video were among the methodologies tested against known occurrences of polymetallic sulfides in 1500 m -- 2200 m water depths. Known active and currently inactive sulfide areas were characterized using the various remote sensing techniques followed by survey with these same tools in other areas where they successfully discovered new prospects. Dredge sampling was used to ground truth both previously known sulfide areas and newly found deposits.

"An environmental impact assessment (EIA) of a deep sea mining project typically describes the environmental baseline, impacts of the project to the environmental values, and proposed management techniques. Comprehensive EIAs also consider the impact of the mining project on existing industries, including deep sea fishing. However, few projects to date have included other industries in the EIA process in more than a cursory manner, due to the confidentiality of the process, conflicting priorities, and bureaucratic limitation. However, if the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (particularly Goal 17: Collaboration) are to be achieved, a new way of thinking will be necessary for deep sea mining projects, starting with collaboration at the very beginning of the project life cycle.STRUCTURE OF PRESENTATIONThis presentation will be in the format of an oral (20 minute presentation).The presentation will cover the process of inter-industry collaboration throughout the life cycle of a deep sea mining project, drawing on historical and existing examples, including that of the Chatham Rock Phosphate Project in New Zealand."

"Seafloor mining provides significant potential economic benefits for many Pacific nations that may be “land poor” but “coastline rich,” meaning they have the potential to utilize and profit from the mineral wealth within their Exclusive Economic Zones that extend 200 nautical miles (360 km) out from their coastlines. Within international waters, mineral wealth is the “Common Heritage of Mankind” with additional benefits for sponsoring states and their people.The Solwara 1 Project build continues with significant progress over the last twelve months. The Seafloor Production Tools (SPTs), Subsea Slurry Lift Pump, riser pipe, launch and recovery systems and winches are now complete with delivery to test facilities and the vessel ongoing. Recent focus has been on submerged trials for the SPTs, but the vessel build continues to progress to schedule. Nautilus appreciates the great support thus far from our all our stakeholders.Our focus is to develop the world's first commercial high grade seafloor copper-gold project in an environmentally and socially responsible manner and to launch the deepwater seafloor resource production industry.Nautilus’s marine research continues, including a 3.5-month series of exploration cruises for Seafloor Massive Sulphides in the Bismarck Sea, as well as fabrication of purpose designed exploration equipment."

"TOML’s ISA Contract comprises six areas (A-F) that span from 118° to 152° W and from 7° to 15° N or over 70% of the CCZ.During a 2015 exploration cruise, TOML scientists found that the a logging system developed by ISA (2010) was able to be adapted and enhanced, to describe in some detail the varied morphology of nodules both within the TOML areas and between them.The shapes and sizes of nodules seen were then found to relate to substrate type and setting, and thus likely thickness and long-term stability of the geochemically active layer. Consideration of the various processes that might influence growth helps constrain nodule formation further. Ocean observatory technologies permit uninterrupted, real-time observation of dynamic seafloor environments such as gas hydrate deposits and hydrothermal vent fields that are of both scientific and economic interest. Such observations enable new discoveries of linkages between physical, chemical and biological processes and could permit continuous monitoring of environmental variables during mining operations. Ocean Networks Canada operates the NEPTUNE and VENUS cabled observatories in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. The offshore NEPTUNE observatory supports instruments at two gas hydrate sites on the continental margin off Vancouver Island, and in the hydrothermal vent fields of the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The primary focus of the gas hydrate field observations is to understand the dynamics of the growth and stability of outcropping and sub-seafloor hydrate deposits. Outcropping hydrates at 840 m depth in Barkley Canyon have been monitored for the past 3 years with a mobile instrument platform known as Wally, which is operated over the Internet by a research group in Germany. This tracked vehicle carries standard oceanographic sensors, acoustic current metres, cameras and methane sensors. Data indicate a relationship between degassing of hydrates and tidal currents. In 2012-2013 two high-resolution sonar towers were added to the hydrate field to provide precision tracking of Wally and to monitor volume changes in the outcropping hydrate mounds. A large subsurface hydrate deposit occurs at the Clayoquot Slope site, where bottom depth is 1260 metres. Monitoring instrumentation is currently being established at this location. IHC Merwede is world market leader in the construction of specialist dredging equipment; it is a company with a rich history. The Netherlands is a coastal western country for which water management is a very important issue. Without the enclosure of the coastal areas with dikes and dunes almost two third of the Netherlands would be flooded. These activities are mostly performed by the dredging industry and are the foundation of the dredging industry as it is today. Besides land protection this industry also carries out infrastructure maintenance and performs land reclamation projects. In essence the dredging industry is specialized in horizontal excavation activities and operations in shallow waters with the purpose of gathering bottom sediments and disposing it at a different location. The development is that the activities are moving to deeper waters to a depth of up to 150m. A few years ago IHC Merwede received a request to perform the shallow water excavation techniques at a depth of approximately 2000 meters for the deep sea mining market. In response to the increasing number of requests for deep sea dredging and mining application solutions, IHC Merwede combined all of its activities in this sector to create a new, specially equipped operational unit, IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining (IHC DSDM).

"These 40 years, deep-sea mining for manganese nodules, cobalt-rich manganese crusts, and seafloor massive sulfides has been continuously business and R&D targets. The economy is the most important factor for realizing the venture. Some technological options to increase the economy of deep-sea mining are introduced. They are a mechanical lift, waste rejections on seafloor, a substrate recovery as byproduct, and a pulp lift. An example application of one of the options is economically examined. Not only the same type examinations but also some technological clarifications of the options in detail are necessary.BACKGROUNDManganese nodules (nodule), seafloor massive sulfides (SMS), and cobalt-rich manganese crusts (crust) have been well recognized as future metal sources these 40 years. Among them, the nodule was the first recognized ones. The mining technologies for the deep-sea mineral resources, therefore, have been mainly developed in the major R&D projects for the nodule.The mining systems considered were shuttle miner, continuous line bucket (CLB), and hydraulic dredge ones. The shuttle miner system studied by France was a kind of basic study for autonomous underwater vehicle. The CLB system was an effective approach for a small scale and less investment cost mining (Masuda and Cruickshank, 1995). However, both were considered not effective for a bulk scale production rate mining such as 1.5 million tons per year in dry weight. In the hydraulic dredge system, a steel-pipe and flexible-hose conduit for nodule transportation named “pipestring” and a hydraulic pumpup instrument for creation of upward water flow in the pipestring named “pump-lift” or “air-lift” were adapted and developed. Hence, the hydraulic dredge system became the main stream in the mining system."

In the last two years, C-CORE has developed a new seabed sampler directed specifically at obtaining samples from hard or compacted bottoms such as are typical of marine placer deposits. Samples are required for appraisal of concentrations of saleable commodities, and for determination of levels of biological indicators in the deposits. Recently C-CORE and the University of Victoria have been comparing the performance of the Scott/C-CORE sampler with that of the Van Veen sampler often used for biological sampling. Initial trials of the Scott/C-CORE sampler in 1992 at the WestGold mining site, Nome, Alaska, were described by Jewitt et al. at the 1993 UMI. Since that time the sampler has been modified to prevent overfilling, and to limit turbulent flow of water across the top of the sampler buckets when the sampler is recovered with partly-open buckets. The modifications included shoes to prevent sampler overfill, and flexible rubber shielding over top and sides of the sampler to prevent water circulation. Samples have been taken with both samplers in two field areas, one at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland, and the other near Long Pond in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland. In each area multiple samples were taken with both sampler types, and the samples processed immediately to establish the types and quantities of marine organisms that were present. Species identification is expected to be complete by late August.
