"A large-scale expansion to Pacific Coast Bulk Terminals Ltd. has now been completed and placed in operation. The original plant, built approximately eight years ago, consists of the direct rail-car to ship transfer of bulk commodities. The extension includes additional rail-car unloading, a transfer house system for directing commodities to storage or ship, major storage and reclaim facilities, a second shiploader and a second deep-sea berth. In addition to the facilities for overseas shipments, a wood-chip loader and a barge berth have been installed for domestic shipments of wood chips and, occasionally, for other local commodities. The design considerations imposed by the nature of the products to be handled are covered in this paper."

"The Santa Rita mine is located in north eastern part of Bahia in Brazil and is owned and operated by Mirabela Mineração do Brasil Ltda. Typical SABC circuit was designed as the preferred option for the 4.0 mtpa (500tph) to produce a P80 of 125um for flotation. Although the SAG was originally designed to operate with conventional radial pulp lifters, later it was fitted with Outotec’s Turbo Pulp Lifters – TPL (Latchireddi, 2005). The milling circuit commenced commissioning on the 24th of October 2009 and the milling circuit achieved the nameplate capacity within days. with small and relatively simple measures to rectify. Since commissioning, the SAG mill has been working in fully autogenous grinding (FAG) mode with no balls (in contrast to the estimated 10% ball charge) and has been consistently treated up to 650tph.This paper examines the comminution design process, the operating philosophies, start-up experiences, post commissioning optimization and future development works. An evaluation of mill performance relative to the design criteria for the project life to date is also included."

"Ore reserves at Brunswick Mining and Smelting totalled 101(106) tonnes grading 97 grams tonne-1 silver at the end of 1981. Silver is recovered as a byproduct in the copper, lead and bulk concentrates and is lost to the zinc concentrate and plant tailings. Recovery of silver for the year 1981 was 58,5%. The loss of potential revenue is in excess of Cdn $50(106) year-1 at current silver prices and milling rates.Silver is known to occur in solid solution in galena and as tetrshedrite. Evidence indicating the identity and significance of a third silverbearing mineral assemblage is reviewed and the distribution of silver losses is detailed. Characteristics of each the carrier which may be responsible for observed distribution, including size, surface quality, liberation and composition are considered, and the third carrier is shown to have possible implications for improved silver recovery by other Canadian producers as well as by Brunswick Mining.Silver tetrahedrite tailings distributed tailings and losses occur as coarse, free and as very fine unliberated galena in losses of the third carrier are between the zinc concentrate and are concentrated in the finest size fractions. Process alternatives for enhanced silver recovery by physical and chemical means are reviewed."

The recovery of the economy of the Democratic Republic of Congo has allowed for the rapid increase in production of copper from this region, while the increased price of cobalt continues to support the recovery of that country’s economy. This has enabled the modernization of the process technology used, particularly the change from direct electrowinning of copper to solvent extraction-electrowinning. With this change has come a variety of technical challenges in optimizing the recovery of cobalt from these sources. In this paper, we discuss aspects of the flowsheets for the production of cobalt from the ores of the DRC and Zambia, highlighting the technological improvements that have been made. Following this description of the practice, we assess the challenges of further improving the recovery and purity of cobalt from these sources. INTRODUCTION The African Copperbelt (Figure 1) is by far the biggest producer and holds the greatest reserves of cobalt (Sheed, 2015). However, the ores of this great mining region are extracted primarily for their copper content, and cobalt is a by-product. The ratio of copper-to-cobalt is between 6 and 20 to 1, with the ores from the DRC richer in cobalt than those from Zambia. The overall supply of cobalt, shown in Figure 2, is increasing due to an increase in demand for its use as a battery material. Cobalt is used in superalloys, hard metals, pigments, catalysts magnets, tyre adhesives, lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, and wear-resistant coatings, amongst others. Although these generic categories persist, Figure 3 shows how the relative usage of cobalt is changing due to the uptake of electric vehicles in China and Europe. Cobalt is a key element in lithium-ion batteries, and because it is widely anticipated that electric vehicles will be legislatively encouraged, it is anticipated that the demand for cobalt will rise. This anticipated increase in demand resulted in an increase in the price for cobalt, to which suppliers responded over-eagerly, and the price has dropped dramatically in the first few months of 2019, as shown in Figure 4. However, there is a clear cycle of price peaks in cobalt’s history.

"This paper reports the results of a finite element study of the geothermal heatflow into dry mine airways. For isotropic and unsteady state conditions the heatflow into mine airways is studied for a range of surface heat transfer coefficients between rock and air, and age of the airway. Dimensionless temperature gradient values are presented in tables for different values of Boit and Fourier numbers and the results are compared with Starfield tables and Gibson algorithm. It is found that Starfield tables have consistently over-predicted the G values with errors ranging from 2% to 10%. The differences between results obtained from the finite element study and the G values calculated from Gibson's approximation method are mapped. The small error values over a large range of Fourier and Biot numbers confirm the suitability of Gibson's algorithm to rapidly calculate G values for estimating the heat transfer from surrounding rock to mine air.IntroductionIn many underground mines heat is a major problem, and the provision of acceptable working conditions requires considerable expenditure on ventilation systems. The rational design and operation of these systems depend upon an understanding of the various sources of heat in the mine. The natural source, i.e. geothermal heat, contributes up to 80% of total heat added to mine air and it is difficult to analyze and predict the heat owing to a number of influencing variables. The problem of geothermal heat flow has been studied by many investigators (Goch, 1940; Starfield, 1966; Hemp, 1987; Amano et al., 1982; McPherson, 1986).The primary concern of this paper is to develop a better ready reference dimensionless transient temperature table for estimating heatflow at any stage of mine airway life."

"During the excavation of underground galleries in a rock mass, reorganisation of the stress field around the site results in damage to the surrounding material. In the framework of research undertaken at the ANDRA underground laboratory in France, galleries have been excavated in a Callovo-Oxfordian argillite formation. The damage has manifest as a number of fracture systems in the adjacent rock. Observations have shown that fractures generated during excavation and storage exploitation are able to self-seal during re-saturation of the site in the post-closure stage. Although indirect evidence for argillite self-sealing has previously been reported, from experiments performed both in situ and on samples, no direct observations of self-sealing have yet been made.For the present study, we performed a range of self-sealing experiments using a newly-developed triaxial compression cell placed within a nano-CT scanner with a 10 µm resolution. The body of the compression cell is X-ray transparent, allowing sample healing to be monitored directly. The samples contained an artificial fracture that had been generated in the laboratory, into which a fluid was injected. The fractures were orientated either perpendicular or parallel to the plane of anisotropy of the material. Our initial results demonstrate that when fluid is injected perpendicular to the plane of anisotropy, the flow-rate has no apparent influence on the kinetics of fracture closure. Permeability varies significantly, from 2.10-14 to 2.10-18 m2 over 116 hours. Post-test observations of the fracture lips show swelling that appears to be orientated perpendicular to the fracture plane and therefore parallel to the plane of anisotropy. Initial results for an injection parallel to the plane of anisotropy suggest that, in this case, the rate of flow affects the kinetics of fracture closure. For a flow-rate of 0.25 ml/min, closure begins after around one minute. In contrast, for a rate of 0.05 ml/min, it is necessary to wait several minutes before partial sealing of the zone is observed. The reduction in permeability is again significant, from 2.10-15 to 4.10-18 m2 over 96 hours. After completion of the test, swelling was observed in elongated zones that lie parallel to the fracture plane and therefore to the plane of anisotropy."

HydroCopperTM is a new hydrometallurgical process for the treatment of copper sulphide concentrates, which has been developed by Outokumpu. The process includes chloride leaching of copper concentrate, solution purification and precipitation of copper(I) oxide, an intermediate product, which is reduced and cast into copper products. The reduction can be carried out by pyrometallurgical methods or hydrometallurgically in an autoclave. This paper discusses the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the hydrogen reduction of copper(I) oxide in an autoclave. The results of the laboratory tests are presented and discussed. Finally, the autoclave method is compared with other options.

IN JULY 1954, the first iron ore from the deposits in the Knob Lake vicinity was mined and shipped to Seven Islands. The beginning of the production may well be the greatest advance in Canadian economy in the past fifty years. In 1955, the Canadian iron ore output was more than twice that of 1954, an in-crease due principally to the iron ore shipments from the Knob Lake area. Previous to this, Canada's iron production was 1.85 per cent of the world's output. Now, this percentage has risen to approximately 5.5 per cent and shows every indication of increasing further as the production rate from the area is increased. In 1955 the Iron Ore Company of Canada shipped over 7 million tons of iron ore and expects to ship over 10 million tons in 1956. Present facilities may be enlarged to handle up to 20 million tons per year. If the expected I 0 million tons per year are exported, Canada's iron exports will be second only to her wheat and newsprint exports. Before production began from the Knob Lake deposits, years of development were necessary in the area. Geologists spent several summers mapping the general area in order to unravel the complicated stratigraphy and petrology. Particular attention was paid to the mapping of the iron formation and all stages of alteration from fresh iron formation to ore were observed.

"A technique for on-line simultaneous estimation of gas and solids holdup (volume fraction), based on a combination of conductivity and pressure difference measurements, is proposed and tested in a laboratory flotation column (10cm in diameter and 447cm in height). Fundamental concepts underlying this technique and the effect of relevant parameters are discussed. In the studied range, 3-30 %v/v gas holdup and 2-18 % v/v solids holdup, experimental results showed good agreement between the estimated and actual holdup values (as determined by an isolating technique). The relative accuracy of the solids holdup estimation increased when solids density or solids concentration increased. Frequent re-calibration of pressure transducers was found necessary for accurate phase holdup estimation.IntroductionGas holdup is a key parameter in controlling the performance of flotation columns. For example, flotation rate is affected by bubble size and gas rate both of which, in turn, affect gas holdup. Moreover, gas holdup also determines the slurry residence time which indicates a direct influence of gas holdup on recovery.Gas holdup determination has been the focus of many studies (e.g., Castillejos, 1986; Marchese et al., 1992). Some of the techniques which have been used are given in Table 1."

General: National Asbestos Mines Limited has operated an asbestos mine and mill near Thetford Mines, Quebec, since 1958. As a result of additional exploration of the orebody in 1962-63, it became apparent that long-range mining plans would have to be revised to allow for a large increase in both ore and waste tonnages. It was decided that the task of checking out possible mine designs could best be analyzed by a computer to obtain data from which an optimum open-pit configuration could be plotted. Object: It was desired to arrive at an optimum open-pit configuration with an over-all pit slope of 45 degrees and a minimum operational width of 200 ft. at the bottom. Calculations were based on assay values from diamond drill holes in cross sections of the mine. The computer's assignment was to select and describe, by coordinates, the optimum cross section for the mine. Mine engineers then assembled the various optimum sections to produce the pit outline. As this would not necessarily result in a practical mining arrangement, the computer also provided alternate solutions,

"Cominco Copper Division's Valley Mine is located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia, approximately 275 km by air northeast of Vancouver. The nearest towns are Logan Lake, located IS km to the east and Ashcroft, located about 50 km to the northwest.Preproduction stripping of rock and overburden at the Valley Mine's Lake Zone Pit began in mid-1982 following a decision to discontinue mining in the adjacent Jersey Pit. Equipment and mining methods were carried over from the Bethlehem Copper operations which, with Valley Copper Mines, were merged into Cominco in December 1982.Blasting practices, as carried over from the Bethlehem pits, were designed to provide the fine fragmentation required to meet production requirements using the Bethlehem crusher. However, after mining the first few benches of the Lake Zone Pit, it became apparent that overblasting at the pit limits was causing a number of bench failures, as well as contributing to an over-all reduction of the material strength of the rock mass forming the southwest wall of the pit.With present ultimate pit plans calling for the southwest wall to be as high as 300 m, Valley staff realized that potential slope stability problems should be dealt with as early as possible. This philosophy would enable experimentation on phase pit walls in order to attain the optimum slope angle on the ultimate pit wall.As part of an over-a ll slope stability program, a controlled blasting program was initiated at the Lake Zone Pit in March 1983. In this program, Valley engineering and production staff worked together with Golder Associates in establishing design criteria and evaluating the results. This program resulted in a marked improvement in the soundness of pit walls while maintaining the required degree of fragmentation."

"The Western Research Centre (WRC) of CANMET located in Devon, Alberta, is a modern research facility offering services ranging from fundamental research to pilot plant investigations. Recently, a 0. 76 metre diameter by 7.9 metre high Flotaire column flotation cell was installed as a demonstration unit for Canadian coal producers. Because the column cell is intended to be used for research, development and demonstration, WRC recognized that additional sensing equipment and improved process control would be required to generate good data for subsequent column scale-up and engineering design.A low cost, personal computer based control system was, therefore, designed and installed. This paper describes the stepwise procedure in developing the control strategies, selection of system software and hardware, and installation and configuration of the system.Preliminary performance data on a western Canadian coal sample are also presented. Future testwork is planned on additional coal samples to expand upon existing database."

"The Dez River flows from the Zagros Mountains into the great Khuzestan plain, Southwest of Iran. The 203 m high Dez Dam is a double curvature thin concrete arch dam, with a Pulvino, founded on thick bedded to massive conglomerate of Bakhtiary Formation, mainly horizontal and very less jointed at the dam site. Construction work was completed in 1963, creating a reservoir with a total storage volume of 3’315 million m3. The dam body, with some 350’000 m3 volume and (W/H=1.1/1.0), is the dominant feature of the project.Geological and geotechnical studies at the dam site started in 1957 and continued during the whole period of dam construction. Simultaneously, two extensive programs of laboratory testing were carried out in New York and Milan.Most of the results were recorded in the project design documents and in two very well-known papers of Talobre et. al. (1964) and Dodds (1966), however, no detail results are available for most of tests.In order to estimate geomechanical parameters of the rock mass foundation for numerical modeling of the dam body and its foundation, reassessment of the in-situ and laboratory test results using the recent rock mechanics methods was required.This paper explains how the outcomes of those tests, performed more than 50 years ago, were reevaluated and how the definitions and parameters presented in the project reports were re-interpreted using the recent rock mechanics concepts and definitions. Also, the results of classification of Bakhtiary conglomerate using GSI system and application of Hoek & Brown failure criterion for estimating rock mass parameters have been described.INTRODUCTIONThe Dez River flows from its headwaters in the Zagros Mountains into the great Khuzestan plain. "Resin-anchored rebar is commonly used for rock support in mining. The rock properties and environment determine the average bond strength, allowing mine engineers to select the appropriate length and installation pattern for the support. In weak material such as potash, the average bond strength tends to be lower than for a typical hard-rock installation. Determining the failure mechanism by which the support fails in soft-rock applications could lead to improved bond strength and better calculated installed support capacity. This paper reports on research conducted at a potash mine in Saskatchewan and analyzes the failure mechanism of the support.RÉSUMÉ Dans les mines, les barres d’armature enduites de résine sont fréquemment utilisées pour soutenir le roc. "The use of large AG/SAG mills in the mineral industry has been on the rise recently due to a significant reduction in the capital and operating costs for achieving significant increases in plant throughputs. The major reason for downtimes in these mills is the time taken for the replacement of broken or worn liners. This loss of “availability” of these units has a significant impact on the productivity of these plant operations. The ability to predict liner life time and its evolving shape could help to optimize these comminution operations. In the past decades, various models have been proposed to estimate liner wear rate, but because of their empirical nature they could only be used within certain limited operating conditions. In this research, a phenomenological model which could predict the liner wear rate was proposed and tested. This model considers parameters such as; operating conditions, liner hardness, pressure on the lifter, and, relative velocity of particles and mill shell. Data from industrially measured liner profiles were taken during the liner life time at the Sarcheshmeh and the Gol-E-Ghohar SAG mills to provide a solid base to calibrate and validate the model. The comparison of the model predictions with the actual measurements of the liner wear rate showed that the results were in a good agreement at both, the Sarcheshmeh (R2=0.94), and the Gol-E-Ghohar (R2=0.97) concentrators.INTRODUCTIONAG/SAG mills are one of the most important technologies in the mineral processing industry in the recent decades. The “Availability” of these units in a plant operation is one of the most important economic parameter for evaluating their performance. The major reason for the downtime of these mills affecting their “availability”, is the time required to change worn or broken liners (Yahyaei, Banisi, & Hadizadeh, 2009; Maleki-Moghaddam, Yahyaei, & Banisi, 2012). The knowledge about the magnitude and profile of liner wear not only enables more accurate liner life estimation to prevent unwanted interruptions of the SAG milling in mineral processing plants and more strategically plan the scheduled mill outages for liner changes. It also could provide key information needed to select an appropriate liner design (Yahyaei et al., 2009; Rezaeizadeh, Fooladi, Powell, & Weerasekara, 2010a)."

"Total Quality Management (TQM) is becoming a reality in the mining industry. Widely adopted in the manufacturing and services industries, TQM has become the operating style of choice in numerous mining companies across the Americas and Australia. Iron Ore Company of Canada, Inco, MSA, Graniterock, Magma Copper, and CRA's Hamersly Iron - all are pioneers of TQM. These companies and others are confronting the challenges of implementing TQM and are managing the changes required of their people and cultures. What these companies are doing, why they are doing it, and how they are successfully managing the changes are the subjects of this paper.Driving the need for change in these organizations are a host of issues, some of which all mining companies are facing. Requirements from customers for ISO 9000 certification is becoming one of the initial motivators for Total Quality Management. These standards, commonly used in manufacturing throughout the European Community (EC), emphasize quality in the processes that create outputs, instead of just the outputs themselves. Iron Ore Company of Canada, for instance, responding to the requirement of one of its customers, British Steel, has become one of the first mining companies to meet the quality standard. Suppliers who meet the standards are highly desirable to customers who are themselves operating under the ISO or their national quality guidelines."

"The Orostar and Scadding were two small gold mines owned and operated by Orofino Resources Limited. Conventional statistical treatment indicates an identical arithmetic mean grade of 0.22 oz/T Au for both mineable reserves. Further, the deposits are both shown to have cut weighted average reserve grade of 0.21 oz/T. Orostar mined out at 0.206 oz/T and Scadding at 0.156 oz/T Au. The combined exploration and development database contained 1394 fire assays, more than enough for statistical confidence in a normal distribution. Therefore this study was initiated to determine, if possible, why the mill head grades were lower than the averages and to experiment with several methods to determine whether a reliable statistical mill head grade estimation method would emerge. Despite the identical reserve grades, distinct differences in the grade distribution histograms are present. By studying the arithmetic and log-normal grade distributions, with some attention to South African practices, this paper reports on those differences which may account for the considerable divergence in the mill head grades. Furthermore, this study casts considerable doubt on the industry standard method of cut weighted averages.The global mill head grades of the two deposits have been derived from the arithmetic average grades by graphic means. This precise method of mill head grade prediction, if applied to complex orebodies, could permit selective grade control and result in direct cost savings by allowing the operator to detect false value stopes, benches or levels and emphasize reliable regions of not only gold mines, but also uranium or base metal deposits."

"IntroductionIndustrial applications of mica utilize two commercially important varieties of mica: muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite mica is a potassium mica with a general chemical formula, H2KA1(Si04)3 h, and is sometimes referred to as a potas hsilicate. Phlogopite is a magnesium mica having a general chemical formula, H2KMgSi(Si04)3, and is distinguished from the muscovite mica by its decomposition in sulphuric acid.Canada is one of the major natural mica producers in the world. A large tonnage of the mica powders is at present mined and processed in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This Canadian mica is of the phlogopite type. A closely related mineral of the mica family which is widely used in the construction industry is vermiculite. It is a dehydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate characterized by a foliated structure. Expanded vermiculite, which is often referred to as exfoliated mica, is used as many types of thermal and acoustic insulation, as loose fill in buildings, as an aggregate in concrete, as an ingredient in plaster and insulating concrete , and in fire-proofing compositions. Natural phlogopite and muscovite mica powders are used extensively as reinforcing agents in organic polymers. They also have a wide range of applications in commerical products. For example, dry-ground mica powders are used in large tonnage as a surface finish in roofing materials and as a bonding agent in wallboard joint cement. Common products such as paint, rubber, plastics and welding rods contain mica. Recent studies have also shown that mica powders can be added to portland cement in the preparation of concrete products, as they could improve the tensile strength of the concrete products. "Abstract - The McDougall-Despina fault set in the Noranda district of northwestern Quebec defines the eastern margin of the Despina cauldron, nested within the district-scale Noranda cauldron. The faults are stratabound in that they displace stratigraphy of the cauldron fill, but do not off-set the cauldron cover. The faults are occupied by dikes that acted as eruptive centers to volcanic members of the cauldron-filling sequence. Measurable displacement across the McDougall-Despina fault set is greater than 750 m, and coincident with post-cauldron volcanism. Feeder dikes cross-cut each other and are typically depleted in Na2O and CaO, and enriched in MgO, K2O, Fe2O3 and MnO relative to fresh flows. Economic and subeconomic massive sulfide deposits occur adjacent to the McDougall-Despina fault set at different levels over a stratigraphic thickness of 3000 m. These include the Corbet deposit, the subeconomic D-68 Zone deposits, and the subeconomic stringer zones of South Rusty Hill and Bedford Hill. Numerous copper occurrences and abundant hydrothermal alteration occur in and immediately adjacent to the fault set.The McDougall, Despina, and adjacent, parallel, ancillary faults define a synvolcanic fault set which controlled the location of magmatism, hydrothermal alteration and mineral deposition during the early evolution of the Noranda cauldron. Significant sulfide mineral deposition commonly occurred in proximity to the intersection of the McDougall-Despina fault set with northeast-trending synvolcanic faults. Recognition of synvolcanic faults is therefore a major objective of exploration programs for volcanic-associated massive sulfide deposits."
