"Unique production and environmental problems are associated with multiple seam mining where dragfines are used for overburden and interburden removal. On the production side, the problems are decreased dragfine efficiency in chopdown operations, the general need for spoil rehandle, complications in sequencing stripping and coal handling operations, and potential stability problems in highly stacked spoil. Many variations of dragline methods have been reported in the literature to encounter these problems. Because of the physical properties and peculiar hydrology of sub-arctic region mining of multiple seams in such areas probably could not be done with the methods used in temperate regions.The properties of thawed material would make spoil hard to place in a stable manner and thus would influence the mini sequence. For instance, multiple seam mining which requires some rehandling of spoil and prolonged exposure of overburden and interburden material might be precluded by the instability of thawed spoil and therefore mining techniques have to be modified. Since the deployment and operation of a dragline in modes different from conventional schemes will affect productivity, it will be necessary to study the effects on production of changing the dragfine operational schemes. This paper presents a heuristic simulation model of multi-seam dragline operation of a sub-arctic mine that can be used to analyze the handling of overburden and detailed study of the dragfine performance."

"This paper discusses past and current energy use patterns in the mining and manufacturing sectors of the industrial minerals industry. Information is presented on the primary energy input types as purchased by the industry, the quality and form of the energy actually required by the various production processes, and the residual form of this energy, either embodied in the product or rejected in gaseous and liquid waste heat streams. With the continuing concerns about the availability of energy combined with the rapidly increasing cost of energy as a production input, the reduction of energy usage through improved efficiency will undoubtedly be an increasing priority for the industry during the 1980s. Reduced energy consumption through investment to improve energy efficiency appears to be advantageous from both the corporate and national perspectives.IntroductionEnergy, like labour and materials, is one of the basic production input s to the various mining, processing and manufacturing production stages in the industrial minerals industry. Energy costs, as a percentage of total production costs, have been well above the average for industry in Canada, accounting for more than 50 cents out of every dollar in the most extreme cases. Consequently, energy has always been a relatively important management concern in the industrial minerals industry.The energy supply and price situation in Canada and internationally has been changing rapidly since 1973, following a long period characterized by declining real energy prices and an abundance and wide choice of energy supplies. It is generally accepted that energy prices will continue to increase rapidly, and that there will be uncertainties about the long-term continuity of supply of some energy types. In essence, a period of relative stability has been replaced by a period of relative uncertainty. In such a changing situation, a reassessment of the role of energy as a production input is appropriate.The following sections outline some of the effects of the changing energy scene on the industrial minerals industry. These effects are dealt with primarily in terms of energy costs, because, in most circumstances, a change in the cost of energy as a production input is the end result of both energy price and energy supply changes."

The latest chapter unfolded this summer when the Commodity Tax Review Group released its important report. Whatever sales tax changes, if any, are finally adopted will have profound effects on many aspects of doing business. The capital-intensive mining industry will not escape these effects.IntroductionThe Federal Sales Tax Review Committee, established by the Minister of Finance earlier this year, has published a report that is sharply critical of the government proposals to shift the incidence of federal sales tax from the manufacturer level to the whole sale level (sales to retailers). The Report recommends a continuance of the present manufacturer's tax, for the present, but with significant changes that would increase the tax cost on certain imports, smooth the administrative machinery and make appeals and determinations more open and equitable. For the longer term, the Report recommends a shift of the tax base to the retail level.Reform of the federal sales tax system has been under consideration for several decades. "The object of this paper is to outline a computerized net cash flow approach for practical cutoff grade determinations. A cutoff grade carries not only geological but also economic value, in which costs are balanced against revenues. For different situations, cutoff grades are a 'standard of value' that are determined for the purpose of classifying economic or uneconomic mineral reserves in a specified time frame. In a constantly changing technical and economic environment, the decision to develop or maintain a mining operation at its best economic potential, requires an appropriate cutoff grade strategy, a strategy consistent with short- and long-term operational and corporate objectives and one based on realistic marketing and metal prices forecasts. The use of a project evaluation computer program, in combination with specific corporate net cash flow requirements, shows the most promising and flexible team approach for cutoff grade optimization.IntroductionThe recent recession has had a devastating effect on the Canadian mining industry. Exploration and mining R&D expenditures have been critically reduced and now are believed to be below healthy levels. Ore reserves, mine life and cutoff grades are careening in several directions because of low base metal prices, relatively high costs and sensitive precious metal prices.These conditions demand an improved understanding of the terms ""ore"" and ""cutoff grades"" as they are applied to the planning process and day-to-day operations. ""Ore"" or 'ore reserves"" is a dynamic concept, reflecting a cumulative effect of changes in geological, technical and economic conditions in terms of material which can be mined at a potential profit. By contrast, if economics are not the primary consideration, the term ""mineral reserve"" or ""mineral inventory"" should be used to describe the mineral deposit. For different situations, cutoff grade is ""a standard of value"" determined for the purpose of classifying mineral reserves as economic or uneconomic in a specified time frame. The question of mining at average reserve grade or low-grade material during high metal prices is of paramount importance for cutoff grade strategy."

"The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation contains the bitumen reserves of the Syncrude Mine in northeastern Alberta. This formation comprises sediments deposited sequentially in fluvial, estuarine and marine depositional environments. The Syncrude Base Mine area consists mostly of estuarine sediments, as much of the original marine sediments have been eroded away. These estuarine deposits consist of channel-fill sediments and interchannel tidal flat sediments with the channel-fills comprising most of the orebody.Channel-fills contain, among other lithologies, interbedded sand, silt and clay rich layers that often occur as sequences of inclined beds with dips up to 25 degrees or more. A detailed knowledge of the distribution of these inclined beds, their lithological characteristics and their continuity is very important in assessing the risk of mine highwall instability . Techniques used to identify and characterize adverse structures are reviewed. INTRODUCTIONGeneralThe Syncrude Canada Ltd. oil sand mine is located within the surface mineable portion of the Athabasca Oil Sands area about 40 kilometres north of Fort McMurray in northeastern Alberta, Canada (Fig. I). The company commenced large-scale strip mining of oil sands in June 1977in the area, referred to as the Base Mine, situated in the southeast corner of the company's two lease areas (Fig. 2).The mining method (Fig. 3) utilizes large electric drag lines operating on a single bench with highwall depths up to 60 metres. Feed grade oil sand (= 6 wt.% bitumen) is mined by draglines and windrowed parallel to the highwall crest. Lower grade oil sand « 6 wt. 0J0 bitumen) occurring as waste bands is selectively mined by the draglines and cast back into the mined out pit or placed on the bench and hauled by truck. The windrowed feed is delivered to the extraction plant by a bucket wheel reclaimer and conveyor system. Stripping of Recent, Pleistocene and Cretaceous overburden units is done outside the conveyor systems by mobile equipment. The 4.5 kilometre long mine is split into four quadrants for planning and scheduling purposes, with each quadrant having an individual dragline-bucketwheel-conveyor system.Surface mining of oil sand at Syncrude requires the removal of vast quantites of material. The design of the open pit mine relies heavily on knowledge of the distribution of ore and waste materials, and on the physical characteristics of these materials.The geology of the oil sand below the dragline bench at the Syncrude Mine is complex. Geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological factors play an important role in the design and operation of the mine. This paper describes aspects of the geology that impact on the design and operation of the mine. Some of the methods and procedures adopted by Syncrude to successfully overcome difficulties that the complex geology creates are discussed."

"The virtue of spray drying is that it is a drying method, and so far the only one by which it is possible in one operation to divide a mineral concentrate into its basic primary particles.,In so doing, each particle gets the same treatment and the result is a dry concentrate more homogeneous than any other known concentrate drying process. This is particularly good for a flash furnace requiring a bone dry finely divided feed. The spray dryer also features a very short residence time and due to the very quick operation the solids are kept cool thus preventing any risk of fire or explosions on these pyrophoric materials.There are many spray dryers now in operation in the mining industry and one of the latest applications is in South Africa where a spray dryer is treating a copper-nickel platinum concentrate which is, after drying, fed toan electric arc furnace. Experience has shown that the concentrate should contain 4% moisture for the furnace, and this is achieved by drying the concentrate bone dry and then back-mixing with thickener underflow pulp to provide an extremely homogeneous feed to the smelter. As mentioned before, mixing with pulp would be more of an advantage because we would not be evaporating water which would have to be added again afterwards.One of the first spray dryers to go in was at Western Mining Corporation in Kambalda in Western Australia. "This paper covers the new six-strand curved-mould billet casting machine at the Contrecoeur Works of SidbecDosco. It commenced production of 3 Yz-in. square billets at the beginning of January 1972. Together with two 100- ton ultra-high-power electric furnaces in a new meltshop, it is the principal source of billets for the existing rod and bar mill also located at Contrecoeur. The paper develops the reasoning for casting-to-size 3Y2 -in. billets and for choosing a six-strand machine. It indicates the significance of Sidbec-Dosco Montreal Works' extensive experience in operating a four-strand curvedmould billet machine since 1965 and the ways in which this experience influenced the design and operation of the new caster. Machine features are described in detail, as are the reasons for some of the features. The installation, checkout and crew training are briefly discussed as well as the tundish teeming trials. The first cast on January 5, 1972, is covered and a log is shown of the first casts to an empty ladle. There are operating statistics covering the first 100 casts, which produced 8000 tons of good billets in ten weeks of operation. Machine performance and billet quality were good and the few minor problems encountered are described."

It is well known that the specific density of minerals has adverse influence on the classification performance of a hydrocyclone, particularly when liberated high density minerals such as gold or uranium are present in sulphide ores. These liberated heavy minerals often misreport to the underflow and recirculate to the system. Such phenomena does result in serious issues in a closed-grinding circuit, such as overgrinding, leading to production of flaky particles (as in gold) or ultrafines, in addition to increased energy inefficiency. In plants which present gold liberated at coarser size, loss of gold due to cyclone inefficiency is sometimes prevented by incorporating gravity concentrators into the grinding circuit to recover the gold. The work reported in this paper looks at whether the effect of density will prevent successful rejection of liberated U-bearing minerals in the –10µm size range of a plant re-cleaner feed, which is necessary to minimize penalty U accumulation in a copper concentrator. The study was carried out using a cyclone rig with spigot diameter of 0.25 inches in combination with batch flotation. It was found that the density effect is almost negligible at particle sizes below 10µm. Consequently, the liberated U-bearing particles finer than 10 µm were successfully removed in the overflow stream as rejects and hence U grade in the copper concentrate remarkably reduced, by 16 ppm. Based on the results, de-sliming of the re-cleaner feed was recommended for plant trial and implementation.

"The operating cost of a gold mine employing granular activated carbon to recover gold can be greatly affected by the condition of in-circuit carbon and its attrition losses. To accurately identify and quantify carbon losses requires careful study. Carbon attrition in the mill can be attributed mainly to physical or mechanical breakage due to the transfer of carbon in the circuit and to carbon oxidation and thermal fracture occurring in the carbon reactivation kiln. Of the equipment involved in carbon transfer, the water powered eductors are the major cause of abrasion and should be replaced with pumps or alternate methods that can serve the purpose. This paper also reviews the impact of carbon stripping and washing on overall operations.IntroductionHolt-McDermott Mine operates a 1360 tonnes per day Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) mill to recover gold. The relatively high carbon consumption and high remaining gold values on carbon after stripping were viewed as a challenging project for research. Extensive metallurgical testwork was initiated to reduce these values. Figure 1 below indicates the carbon flowchart prior to any significant changes in the carbon handling procedures.Carbon consumption after commissioning which was as high as 10""/o of carbon eluted, has been brought down to less than 5%. Ion Exchange (IX) using Strong Base Anion Exchange (SBA) resins is conventionally used to purify uranium from sulfuric acid pregnant leach solutions (PLS), particularly when uranium grades are relatively low. However, the presence of chloride in the PLS interferes negatively with conventional SBA based IX processes, by reducing the uranium loading on the resin. Chloride can be present in the PLS due to the use of saline bore or seawater in leaching, or chloride containing leach/IX reagents. ANSTO has been examining strategies to combat this problem for several years. ANSTO previously reported that a recently developed high-capacity SBA resin was capable of extracting uranium efficiently from saline leach liquors produced at Boss Resources’ Honeymoon in-situ recovery mine in South Australia. The resin was tested successfully in a 2017 Field Leach Trial carried out onsite in the existing wellfield area. While the piloting was extremely promising, the elution was more challenging, with eluate tenors limited to 2 g/L U3O8 using NaCl. This is due to the resin’s strong affinity for the uranium complex, which makes it difficult to elute efficiently by standard methods. In this paper, we describe a novel elution process developed for strong base resins that significantly improves upon conventional methods. The process, developed by ANSTO, is based upon conversion of the extracted uranyl sulfate species to uranyl carbonate, followed by elution with sodium chloride. The loading and elution process was demonstrated in continuous locked-cycle piloting conducted at ANSTO in 2019. The results were excellent, with eluate tenors of 8–9 g/L U3O8 achieved from Honeymoon PLS containing 50 mg/L U3O8, with very little transfer of impurities. In subsequent test work, the eluate was shown to be amenable to uranium peroxide precipitation. The results represent a huge step forward for the purification of uranium from saline leach liquors.

"This paper attempts to provide a simple analytical solution for the calculation of the stress tensor induced in a two-dimensional elastic ring of a brittle material subjected to general loading on either its internal or external curved surfaces. Airy stress functions and Michell’s expression in polar coordinates are used, and parametric studies are performed to investigate the influence of loading angle and the geometrical aspect ratio of the ring on the maximum induced tensile stress. INTRODUCTIONA proper and accurate estimation of the tensile strength of a given material is a crucial step in many engineering projects; in particular in rock cutting, since rocks are much weaker in tension than in compression or shear. Both direct and indirect laboratory techniques such as the direct uniaxial pulling test, the Brazilian indirect tensile test (also known as the split cylinder test), and the ring test have been proposed and developed to estimate rock tensile strength. Among these, the ring test, initially suggested by Ripperger and Davids (1946), has become particularly appealing for its ease of sample preparation and its unique breakage mechanism in almost a pure tensile mode. Unlike the Brazilian test in which high shear stresses developed in the vicinity of the contact could interfere with the tensile breakage of the disc specimen, a tensile failure starts away from the loading platens in a ring test (Hobbs, 1964)."

M INE production requires the coordination of the talents of men and the use of equipment. Mine operators maintain a continual surveillance of equipment, looking for improvements and modifications that will benefit them. Few give similar attention to the advances made in the education of mining engineers since they themselves graduated. That is not surprising. Education lacks the advertising budget available to manufacturers. A modification to improve a mechanical contrivance is advertised, and an advertiser's press releases get attention by publishers. The whole program for mining engineering education could be revolutionized and no one, except a few professors, would know about it. The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy's newly established General Commit-tee on Education can improve that situation. Nine groups of engineers in Canadian universities are trying to give undergraduates an education that will make them useful to the mineral industry as mining engineers. The tabulation offered here (Table I) is an analysis of the distribution of the undergraduate-teacher contact time.

Poland is the ninth largest coal producer in the world and Coal Company is the largest Polish producer of this deposit yielding 51% of national production. Coal Company mines are located in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. These are underground mines which operate in difficult geological conditions at great depths of up to 1200 m. One of the most common natural hazards in Polish mines are rockburst and seismic hazard impacting on surface infrastructure and habitants. In the assessment of the rockburst and seismic hazard methods of mining seismology play a leading role. This paper presents progress that was achieved in the last few years in the implementation of new seismic monitoring systems and seismic interpretation methods for the prevention of hazard deriving from seismicity induced by mining. This progress in assessment of rockburst hazard and impact of seismic activity on the surface infrastructure was achieved through close cooperation between the Coal Company and Central Mining Institute ? the country?s leading scientific institute in the field of mining seismology. New theoretical solutions are in the process of testing in mines of Coal Company where seismic monitoring systems are installed and controlled by well-qualified personnel. Some directions of further joint actions to increase the effectiveness of rockburst and seismic hazard assessment are presented as well.

Micromixing of the fluid and the particulate phases in a continuous gibbsite precipitator was investigated for three different micromixing states, namely maximum mixedness (MM), complete segregation (CS), and maximum mixedness of the fluid but complete segregation of the particulates (MMF-CSP). The influence of the micromixing on continuous precipitation of gibbsite was studied at different precipitation conditions via simulation. Three different cases were considered with respect to the precipitation kinetics: (1) gibbsite secondary nucleation is favoured with slow crystal growth and agglomeration rates; (2) gibbsite crystal agglomeration and growth are dominant mechanisms with secondary nucleation suppressed; and (3) gibbsite crystal growth is the only relevant phenomenon. Simulation results for the cases (1) and (3) showed that the crystalline products for both the MM and MMF-CSP micromixing states were very similar, but the product obtained from the CS micromixing state was considerably different. This indicates that at those precipitation conditions the fluid micomixing has the dominant effect on the product properties, and the particulates micromixing effect is insignificant. However, when operated under the conditions of fast crystal growth and agglomeration kinetics, i.e. case (2), both the fluid and the particulates micromixing were found to affect the precipitation process, resulting in a significantly different product. "Early efforts to develop formal reporting systems to quantify and classify mineral deposits date back over 100 years. (e.g. Hoover 1909: “Proved, Probable, Prospective Ore”). This was at first driven by mine operators’ need for reliable estimates of what their mines could produce. Disruption of transportation routes by world wars prompted western governments to recognize the need for assessments of strategic sources of metals and minerals that could support domestic industry during times of crisis. Categories were created to quantify mineral potential which were additional to those of mine reserves. Terms such as hypothetical and undiscovered resources entered the lexicon. Capital markets serving the mining industry were traumatized during the latter part of the 20th century by undisciplined and fraudulent disclosure by exploration companies of mineral deposit potential. Government securities regulators pressed for the development of credible reporting codes (e.g. SEC Industry Guide 7: 1981; JORC 1989; SAMREC 1994, CIM 2000). Representative organizations from the major western mining countries generally agreed that there should only be three categories of mineral resources (measured, indicated, and inferred) and two categories of mineral reserves (proven and probable). This was formalized in 1997 with the “Denver Accord”. Acceptance of the standard terminology may have been the easy part, because the challenge for the 21st century is to get general industry acceptance and agreement of the principles behind the definitions of each category. There has been noticeable movement towards this objective in the last few years. This is reflected in part in the updated reporting codes by JORC 2004, CIM 2005; SAMREC 2007; SME 2007; and PERC 2008, and the development of the CRIRSCO International Reporting Template 2007."

"Nickel granules are produced for carbonylation by pouring a molten stream into a path of high pressure water. Granules and water are separated in dewatering bins. The overflow, which contains up to 0.1 weight percent solids, was initially cooled and recycled to the granulating step. However, the rate of buildup of these solids in the handling system was intolerable. A lamella thickener was installed to solve the problem by removing solids from the dewatering bin overflow. Its description, application and performance to date are discussed.The lamella thickener treats a slurry containing about 0.1% solids of which about 30 weight percent is less than 325 mesh. It recovers 80 to 90 percent of the input solids in an underflow slurry containing 90 weight percent solids. Since its installation the frequency of cleanout of the recycle water handling system has dropped from about once per month to about once or twice per-year."

NORMAN WEISS, Milling Engineer, American Smelting• and Refining Company: The subject of the Forum on Rod and Ball Mill Liners is very fascinating, and there is no end of discussion when operators get together on grinding. However, the hypotheses and suppositions easily outrun the facts, especially when we •consider the inaccuracy of many reported observations. Still surprisingly small is the number of concentrators even reasonably well equipped to measure power consumption of each grinding mill, together with running time, so that data on this tangible factor, at least, can be obtained with precision. While the more elaborate devices of this nature, producing for each 24-hour period the total power consumption, average kilowatt hours per hour, short-term demand chart, instantaneous demand, and print-out, may cost in the neighbourhood of $2,500 per mill and may be difficult to justify, the combination of an ammeter, watthour meter, and running-time meter will cost only a few hundred dollars, so there appears to be little reason not to in-stall them in view of their numerous advantages.

Archaeometallurgical remains can be a valuable source of information about past technological activities and, by inference, the societies that undertook them. Material traces of former metal-producing or metal-working centres can include raw materials, products, or metallurgical installations such as mines, furnaces or forges. Of these remains, the most common is slag, often left undisturbed since its original production. Physical and chemical analyses of archaeological slag and metal can often reveal the processes and materials involved in their formation. Mineral composition and softening temperature of a slag, for instance, can indicate the conditions of the metallurgical operation, such as temperature and atmosphere and, thus, help identify metallurgical processes which took place at a site(1). The present report illustrates the value of such analysis. Metal-working remains from Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, near Midland, Ontario, on the south side of Georgian Bay have been analyzed in order to determine the techniques and processes used by the 17th-century blacksmith who worked at the mission headquarters from 1642 to 1649. Samples were selected from a very large collection of blacksmith refuse which was excavated from the site by archaeologist Kenneth Kidd in 1941-42(2).

The purpose of the study is to show, through real cases of companies in Chile, the different problems concerning valuing or economically appraising a mining ore resource with the traditional techniques. The study demonstrates that, with the risk analysis and real options theory application, one could determine the most probable value for a mining resource or mining business, and the risks cover of uncertainty scenarios. The study discusses different methods and criteria employed in the ore resource evaluation or mining assets. It also shows a comparative analysis of the different methods in order to explain various distortions, errors, risks and imprecisions of each of them. the companies are becoming aware of the risks' importance and the impact they have on the commercial value and resource estimation models. Now, the real options are the techniques that somehow make it possible to value and control the risk cover of the business. The company valuation could help respond questions like: ? How much is my business worth? ? How much has the investment profitability of my business been? What could be done to improve this profitability and create value?

The need to improve supply reliability while improving our environmental record during the past half decade of low metal prices has required the mining industry to prioritise expenditures. Quantitative Risk Assessments using third party reviewers and specialist risk management teams have assisted in identifying hazards that can both disrupt supply and impact the receiving environment. Graphical displays using risk ellipses can simplify the presentation of the results in a Probability-Consequence (PC) graph. Development of risk acceptability envelopes using readily available financial data superimposed onto the same PC space assists management to prioritise their risks and focus on risk reduction measures. Development of this system and examples of the successful implementation of the system from several recent projects are described.
