The production process of a coal mine can often be interrupted by all kinds of events scheduled or unscheduled and thus often needs gas drainage for a temporary or long-term sealed area. Gas drainage has a relatively high risk, therefore attention must be paid to its design to keep the process safe. Based on the conservation laws of mass and constituents, and under the conditions of the allowable gas concentration limit in the return air route, the relationship between gas concentration and gas drainage flow rate as a function of time during the drainage process is discussed in detail to build a mathematical model of gas drainage from a sealed area. With respect to the gas drainage process, two different conditions need to be considered: one with a methane free fresh air supply, the other with a low gas concentration. This paper presents the derived mathematical models for these situations and then shows that they can be incorporated into one model with some modification. This combined model can be employed to determine the optimum gas drainage flow rate with the shortest drainage time. The application is coded using the C# programming language within the .NET framework. Finally, the application program developed by the author is used to validate the mathematical model through an example of gas drainage with varying rate.

"THE last two years have been years of recession or, perhaps, years of marking time, depending upon whether the observer is a pessimist or an optimist. There has been a slackening in the industrial tempo that has been reflected in many ways in the national economy. As one of the chief barometers of economic health, the consumption and supply of energy reflect this slowing up.These same two years have also seen significant changes in the relation between the sources of energy. In periods of declining demand, it has happened in the past that coal, as the basic or residual source of energy, has shown the effects to a greater extent than the other energies. In these two years, however, in addition to this usual effect, there has been the acceleration in the Joss of market to diesels in the railway consumption category and the continuing decline in domestic consumption. The story of these years is presented in the statistical tables that form the foundation of this paper. Statistics, particularly in the form of tables, are rather dry and are sometimes difficult to follow but the overall developments are illustrated by graphs which present a more striking picture."

Magnesium alloy, being the lightest structural material, is a key candidate for the weight reduction of vehicles in automotive and aerospace industries; however, its poor corrosion resistance and difficulty in deformation are limiting factors. Recently, Al/Mg/Al tri-layered clad sheets have been considered as a promising alternative to improve corrosion resistance and formability of magnesium alloys. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tensile properties and deformation behavior of Al/Mg/Al tri-layer clad sheets at different temperatures and strain rates. Yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation were observed to increase with increasing strain rate. With increasing temperature from -40°C to 180°C, YS and UTS decreased and ductility increased. The strain hardening exponent evaluated via three equations of Hollomon, Swift, and Afrin et al. showed a similar increase with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. The fractographic analysis showed partial debonding of clad interface especially at higher strain rates and lower temperatures.

"Abstract - The Orvan Brook deposit is one of several (Zn+Pb>>Cu)-rich sulfide deposits hosted by the Spruce Lake Formation (California Lake Group) in the northwestern part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. This parautochthonous deposit is hosted by a narrow band of highly deformed, locally graphitic shale that appears to conformably overlie felsic volcanic rocks of the Spruce Lake Formation, and is in tectonic contact with overlying mafic volcanic and related sedimentary rocks of the Canoe Landing Lake Formation. The Spruce Lake Formation is dominated by felsic volcanic rocks and subordinate fine-grained sedimentary rocks, and mafic volcanic rocks (Canoe Landing Lake member). The felsic volcanic rocks can be divided into aphyric and feldspar-phyric rock types. The feldspar-phyric rocks and a few of the aphyric varieties have a Zr/TiO2 ratio of 0.06, and fall into the California Lake Group field on a Y/TiO2 versus Zr/TiO2 diagram. In contrast, the aphyric felsic volcanic rocks have Zr/TiO2 ˜ 0.09 and are marked by high Zr and Th, which is consistent with highly fractionated felsic magma of Spruce Lake affinity. Major and trace element analyses of host rocks suggest that weak to moderate hydrothermal alteration developed on the south side (stratigraphic footwall) of the deposit, which is consistent with a north-younging succession. The sulfide lens strikes east-west for approximately 2.3 km, extends down-dip for at least 500 m locally, and has an average thickness of between 0.75 and 1 m, but is locally up to 5.5 m thick. The contacts of the massive sulfide lens with its host rocks are invariably sharp. Host rocks show evidence of intense ductile deformation as well as later brittle deformation. Compositional layering and sulfide breccia textures in the sulfide body are interpreted to result from deformation or tectonic enhancement of original primary layering. The deposit contains an estimated resource of 2.69 Mt grading 1.73% Pb, 5.95% Zn, 0.37% Cu, 72 g/t Ag, and 0.9 g/t Au. Similarities in bulk d34S between the Orvan Brook (+8.6‰) and the nearby Cu-rich McMaster deposit (+8.2‰) suggest a common depositional setting."

Recovery via gravity is one of the oldest mineral processing methods available. Unfortunately, the use of gravity techniques for gold recovery has been in decline for the past century as more effective chemical processes such as flotation and leach/CIP have been developed. Recently, with the push towards more sustainable environmental outcomes, the benefits of gravity separation have become more apparent. While gravity as a unit process is not usually capable of achieving as high a recovery as flotation or whole ore cyanidation, a combination of gravity devices alone or in conjunction with these processes can offer significant advantages to the operator. This paper reviews the range of gravity devices available, their application and the results that can be achieved by maximizing gravity through the use of a combination of gravity recovery devices. Three case studies are provided.

The Humphrey's spiral is a static gravity separation device which cannot be adjusted to match short-term variations that occur in the feed. Any disturbance in the feed grade, per cent solids or flow rate affects substantially the recovery and grade of concentrate. Such variations must be minimized in order to maintain the desired rate of production and quality of the product for which the installation has been designed. A study has been performed in which the foregoing assertions were quantified. The feed grade, per cent solids, flow rate and particle size were varied independently. Ore from Carol Lake, Nfld., was used throughout the experiments. This consisted of specular hematite and magnetite in a silica gangue.

"The Minto-Chipman Strip Mining Reclamation Project was initiated to re-vegetate the spoil piles remaining from strip mining operations.All available information was studied by the team responsible, and areas being reclaimed in the U. S. were visited, Methods applicable to the N. B. Project were noted for future use.We have both surface and underground mining operations in New Brunswick, Both deface the natural landscape and reclamation varies in difficulty, Surface operation disturbances are the most difficult to correct.Some of the surface mining is carried out next to two main highways and the results are definite eyesores, With this in mind, it was decided to landscape the spoil ground next to the highways and plant “as is"" the ground remote from the public view.The landscaping entailed various degrees of bulldozing from complete levelling to contouring, smoothing and topping, Bulldozing is, of course, the most expensive part of any reclamation project.There are two phases to the planting program; experimental and operational--experimental both prior and, later, in conjunction with the operational planting.Initially in the experimental project, the pH and composition of the spoil was determined using a grid sampling system. Soil samples were tested in a laboratory at the University of New Brunswick."

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A leaches secondary copper sulfides. In recent years, the mine has introduced innovations that have improved the management of mineral crushing, agglomeration, curing, and leaching. The crushing plant, for example, uses the concepts of degree of balance and percentage of time in an operationally balanced state which, displayed in real time, facilitate more intensive and uniform utilization of the crushers. High agglomerate quality is ensured with the correct dose of moisture, which is adjusted to the changing characteristics of the mineral through the use of electrical conductivity measurements. The amount of acid used for curing the agglomerate is also adjusted by using quality control information. Finally, the stockpile irrigation regime is managed using the criteria established by the "Lixiviant Request Rate", which optimizes the addition of leaching solution, creating such benefits as faster recovery, and reduced acid and energy consumption.

"I THANK YOU for the invitation which The Mining Society of Nova Scotia extended, originally to Gordon Berry, manager 'of our Point Tupper Refinery, to join you at this meeting and discuss refining and petrochemicals in their relation to this region. There are natural advantages in Nova Scotia which have made possible, and will continue to make possible, sizeable developments both in petroleum refining and in chemicals. Equally, however, as is the case everywhere, there are certain constraints. For clarity in this presentation, I will state some of these constraints right at the beginning. First, of any future developments from now on, only a small proportion of the products can be expected to go into local markets. I can make the point best with a few figures. Petroleum companies all have market forecasts. None ever work out to be perfect, but the trends are relatively predictable and the orders of magnitude are certainly correct. THE Flin Flon concentrating and metallurgical plants (Figure 1) of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, lie adjacent to the town of Flin Flon, on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, 400 miles northwest of Winnipeg. Since the start of milling operations in 1930, over 50 million tons of ore from the Flin Flon mine have been treated in the concentrator. During the past few years, newly discovered orebodies have been brought into production and their ores processed at the company's main metallurgical plants. All these properties are within a 75-mile radius of Flin Flon and have aided substantially in augmenting plant metal production as well as retarding depletion of ore reserves in the Flin Flon mine. •Current satellite producers are the Schist Lake, Coronation, and Chisel Lake mines. The Schist Lake mine, located 3 ½ miles southeast of the main plant, is a copper-zinc producer. It was brought into production in 1954. The

"The Marvast monazite deposit is located 35 kilometres south - southwest of Marvast in Yazd province of Iran. A representative sample weighing approximately 10 tons was prepared to study the amenability of the ore to physical beneficiation. The size fraction of +1000 µm was removed due to low monazite content and the –1000 µm size fraction was concentrated by the gravity-classification-magnetic methods. According to the results of sample characterization, the representative sample contains 220 ppm REO that is contained in monazite. It was concentrated to 41.5% REO by the above mentioned methods. The recovery of REO in the monazite concentrate was 41.5%.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements are critical metals in many countries (Gupta, 2005; UK Geological Survey, 2011). Increasing application of these metals in hi-tech industries and price fluctuation caused by Chinese production policy has led other countries to focus on their local resources (UK Geological Survey, 2011). In this case, Iran is not an exception.REE mineralization in Iran is mainly located in the central zone. Regarding the exploration data, these deposits are divided into two categories. The first group is iron ore deposits in which the REE are carried by phosphate minerals. The other group is placer deposits where monazite is the major mineral of the deposit. The Marvast placer deposit is one of these types of deposit (Daliran, 1990; Mokhtari, 2008; Torab, &Lehmann, 2007; Alipour, 2014)."

"Gold has been found in many parts of the Bridge River district of British Columbia; but it is from a relatively small area in the valley of Cadwallader creek that most production has come. The ore-bearing area measures 1/2 mile in width by 3 miles in length; and for convenience it is called the Cadwallader gold belt in this paper. In this belt are found the Bralorne and Pioneer mines and in addition several prospects under development.The gold of the Cadwallader gold belt occurs in quartz veins averaging about 3 feet in width and containing about ½ oz. of gold a ton. Except for a relatively small amount of silver, no other metals are produced from these veins. The ore-bearing veins occur in a variety of rocks. They occupy reverse faults and tension fractures belonging to a distinctive fracture system. Some of these structures are ore-bearing over lengths exceeding 5,000 feet and depths exceeding 3,700 feet. The production of the Bralorne mine (1932-1945) is 996,383 oz. gold and 190,709 oz. silver; that of the Pioneer mine (1930-1945) is 777,588 oz. gold and 135,698 oz. silver. These two mines have together distributed about $25,000,000 in dividends.The Bridge River district first attracted attention in 1863* when prospectors were attracted by its small but rich placer gold deposits. Most of the important lode deposits of the Cadwallader gold belt were discovered in 1897 (11). Many years of desultory development followed and it was not until 1928 and 1932 that the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, respectivdy, entered into profitable production."

"Abstract - Shallow submarine hydrothermal fluids from Paleohori Bay off the Greek Island of Milos have been investigated in detail. The extensive gas and warm (max. 93°C) water vents are enriched in major components such as C1-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4 +, K+, Sr2+, H2S and CH4 and depleted in Mg2+, O2 and SO4 2- relative to ambient seawater. Based on zero-Mg calculations, it is deduced that the submarine vent fluids are related to the geothermal reservoir beneath Milos which has a similar chemical composition. Fluid samples from each vent in Paleohori Bay represent a mixture of hydrothermal end-member fluids derived from the upper and deeper geothermal reservoir systems of Milos, a mantle-derived source, a high-chloride fluid resulting from phase separation of geo thermal fluids and a steam-heated CO2-rich meteoric water. Résumé - À l’île de Milos dans la mer d’Égée, des fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux en eau profonde ont été récherchés en détail près de la baie de Paleohori. Les larges émanations de gaz et d’eau chaude (temperature maximale: 93°C) sont enrichies en constituants principaux tels que de Cl-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4+, K+, Si, Sr2+, H2S et CH4 et appauvries en Mg2+, O2, SO4 2- comparé à l’eau de mer environnante. Selon le calcul du zéro-Mg, nous en déduisons que les fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux sont dérivés du réservoir géothermal sous l’île de Milos car leur composition chimique est la même. "The prevalent metal extraction processes for most reactive metals are fused salt electrolysis and metallothermic reduction. The feed material for both of these processes is the anhydrous chloride of the metal under consideration. Dehydration of the feed material is then a critical step in the production of most reactive metals and requires rigorous thermodynamic analysis. Thermodynamic data for most of the reactive metal chloride hydrates have not been measured. Improper dehydration of the metal chloride may lead to a prohibitive amount of hydroxychloride, oxychloride, and oxide. To prevent hydrolysis a certain pressure of hydrogen chloride is required. An estimation and prediction model is presented for the vapour pressures of reactive metal chloride hydrates in an attempt to deduce the conditions necessary for dehydration to proceed without hydrolysis. Thermodynamic data including heat capacities, standard entropies, and standard enthalpies are estimated/predicted for all conceivable intermediate hydrate compounds. Estimations are based on published data as well as trends proven in similar systems. The thermodynamic estimations and predictions are presented for the magnesium, neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium chloride hydrates. INTRODUCTIONThe high reactivity of metals such as the alkalis, alkaline earths, and lanthanides prevents their reduction by traditional pyro- or hydrometallurgy. In their elemental form, these metals are raw materials in the manufacture of intermediate products such as alloys and electronic components. Currently the only two viable metal production methods are fused salt electrolysis and metallothermic reduction. Various feed materials have been proposed for these processes. Using the chloride of the metal as a feed material offers advantages in separation and purity of the final product, as well as lower energy input. Chlorides, however, are hygroscopic and must be dehydrated before use. Improper dehydration will lead to a prohibitive amount of oxychloride which will lower efficiencies and contaminate the final product.Optimum conditions for proper dehydration of MgCl2•6H2O to produce pure MgCl2 without hydrolysis have been calculated from existent thermodynamic data and have been reported previously (Kipouros, 1987; 2001). Calculations were also performed for the case of production of pure anhydrous NdCl3 from NdCl3•6H2O (Roy, 1997)] and the mechanism of dehydration was elucidated. Some thermodynamic studies on the dehydration of chlorides of the rare earths have also been conducted (Sundstrom, 1997; Hong, 1997; Aschcroft, 1968; Haeseler, 1965; Ukraintseya, 1989)."

"The San Antonio gold mine is at Bissett, Manitoba, on the north shore of Rice lake, 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg. Gold was discovered on the property in 1911, but intensive exploration was not undertaken until 1926. Milling commenced on May 1st, 1932. Total amount of ore milled from that time until the end of 1946 was 1,766,670 tons, having a value of $18,378,317.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe rocks in the vicinity of the mine are Precambrian and include three groups, namely, the Rice Lake series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, basic and acidic intrusions, and a younger formation of sediments known as the San Antonio formation (Fig. 1). The lower part of the Rice Lake series, consisting of flows of rhyolite, trachyte, and andesite with interstratified beds of agglomerate, occupies an area extending southward from Rice lake. The lake itself and the country to both east and west of its northern end is underlain by the next succeeding beds of the series, which are chiefly tuffs, arkose, and conglomerate, but include a thin band of basalt. Northward from the lake, these are succeeded by the upper beds of the series, first a thin band of basalt and, overlying this, porphyritic andesite flows interlayered with beds of volcanic breccia or agglomerate.The Rice Lake series has been invaded on the east side of the lake by a body of basic rock ranging in composition from gabbro to diorite and quartz diorite, now much altered. This is cut by younger sills and dykes of basic rock, probably diabase, the original texture of which is largely destroyed by alteration. Numerous dykes of feldspar porphyry, quartzfeldspar porphyry, and a few of a rhyolite-like rock, occur south of the lake, but are uncommon to the north. They cut the diabase and older rocks.Extending westward from Rice lake and lying with marked angular unconformity against all of these rocks is the San Antonio formation, consisting of cross-bedded, arkosic quartzite."

The history of the flotation process, as applied to the practical field of ore dressing, dates back somewhat less than twenty years; yet this fact may be overlooked in view of the present universal dependence on this process in the concentration of almost all classes of ore. It is therefore interesting to recall that Britannia was the scene of some of the earliest experiments with flotation on a commercial scale. In 1911, sixteen years ago, an Elmore vacuum machine was operated for several months with encouraging results. In 1913, some time before flotation was very generally adopted elsewhere, a Minerals Separation plant, capable of treating 600 tons daily, was operating successfully at Britannia. Considering how little was known of the theory and practice of flotation at that time, the recovery was remarkably good, but it was not until the present mill was completed in 1923 that any attempt was made to raise the concentrate grade by differential flotation, or, in other words, to float the chalcopyrite while rejecting the then worthless pyrite with the tailings. The first ore passed through the present concentrator in March, 1923. As originally designed, the rated capacity was for 2,000-2,500 tons, but this has been increased year by year, until at the present time 4,000 tons daily can be treated economically. During the first few months of operation the concentrate grade averaged only 10-11 per cent Cu, but by the end of 1923 this had been raised to over 20 per cent, due to the elimination of the pyrite by differential flotation. In 1923 the tailings averaged approximately 0.25 per cent Cu, but also in the matter of recovery a considerable improvement has been effected, for during the year 1926 an average tailing of 0.15 per cent Cu was maintained.

"Conventional crushing and grinding is followed by gravity concentration to recover free milling gold. Refractory gold, finely disseminated within the pyrite and arsenopyrite matrix, is recovered by flotation followed by pressure oxidation, cyanidation, and cementation. Non-refractory gold is recovered by cyanidation/CIP processing.A comprehensive test program aimed at improving flotation recovery was initiated in June 1995. Plant testing indicated that flotation tails value could be significantly reduced using mechanical flotation cells. Based on these test results, a flotation circuit that incorporates one of the three existing flotation columns followed by mechanical scavenging and cleaning was developed. Detailed engineering was completed in September 1996. Construction started in February 1997 and was completed in 3 months at a cost of $3.2 million. An on-stream X-ray analyzer was installed to provide real-time arsenic and iron analyses and inferred sulphur value on some of the flotation streams.The new flotation circuit proved to be an instant success. Flotation tails values were reduced by 27%. Final tails solids and solution was reduced from 0.035 to 0 023, and 0.0014 to 0.0006 oz/ton Au, respectively. Based on a mill throughput of 1,620 stpd this decrease in tails value will result in an increased gold production of 7,500 ounces per year. The payback for the project is estimated to be around one year.This paper describes the evolution of the project from bench scale testing to commissioning. Also, the operational and economic impacts on down stream processing are highlighted"

"In this work the dissolution, precipitation and adsorption behaviour of gold in acidic iron sulphate media containing small amounts of chloride ions is investigated via batch laboratory tests and OLI thermodynamic calculations over the temperature range 25-250°C. Chloride ions may be present in industrial pressure oxidation/pressure leaching (POX/PL) operations due to elevated water salinity levels or due to intentional addition as is the case of the CESL Copper Pressure Leaching Process. Thermodynamic calculations show that AuCl4 - may form depending on the free Cl-/Au ratio and temperature, its stability increasing with increasing Cl- concentration and decreasing with increasing temperature. On the other hand during POX/PL, we know that massive precipitation of iron in various hydrolysis products and compounds occurs. Hence of interest is the question how AuCl4 - that may form during leaching interacts with the iron precipitation products. Gold(III) chloride was found to co-precipitate with iron(III) (oxy) hydroxides and arsenates forming in the autoclave but not with natrojarosite. Upon further investigation it was discovered that activated carbon added in the autoclave (as done in CIL) acts as preferential sink for the mobilized gold, hence opening the potential for the development of a direct cyanide-free gold recovery process in acidic sulphate leach reactors.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of gold from ores and concentrates has evolved over the years with processing routes becoming increasingly complex. Given the high value of gold, any reduction in losses during recovery operations constitutes an important economic benefit. One such loss that needs to be addressed is the potential solubilisation of gold during pressure oxidation (POX) of refractory sulphidic gold feedstocks. For example, Agnico Eagle Mines reported a loss in gold recovery due to the formation of a gold chloride complex (Garofalo, 2009). Gold is known to form complexes in solution, such as gold(III) chloride, if an excess of chloride ions are present. The fate of such soluble gold chloride during pressure oxidation and the subsequent neutralization of the acidic discharge slurry will determine if gold is lost or recovered in the downstream cyanidation operation. Thus it is of interest to know under what conditions gold chloride may stay soluble or co-precipitate along primary (formed in the autoclave) or secondary (formed during neutralization) precipitates. Furthermore, the mode of co-precipitated gold, such as adsorption on iron compounds, like goethite and hematite (Machesky et al., 1990; Nachayev, 1984); substitution in one of the precipitated phases; or finally chemical reduction to metallic state would have consequences in terms of gold recovery."

"The mining of the ore bodies at Rabbit Lake has in the past been by the open pit method. This method is presently being used to develop the B-zone and will continue into the future with the development of two smaller ore bodies, the A-zone and D-zone. The Eagle Point orebody will be developed by an underground method which will provide production and employment into the next century.The ore bodies at B-zone, A-zone and D-zone are unique in that they are located under Wollaston Lake. To permit mining by the open pit method a steel-celled dyke has been constructed around the north end of the B-zone. This same dyking method will be used for the A -zone and D-zone. INTRODUCTIONMine development at Rabbit Lake commenced in 1970when a detailed engineering feasibility study established the viability of the Rabbit Lake deposit. In 1972 construction of the mill and camp site began. Construction materials were seasonally hauled to the site over a winter road until November 1973when the government of Saskatchewan completed an all-weather road to within six miles of the operation.In October 1974, stripping of the Rabbit Lake open pit began with the removal of overburden and lake bottom sediments from the previously drained Rabbit Lake. The first ore was processed by the mill in June 1975and by October the mill was producing three million pounds per year.
