When underground extractions occur beneath or in close proximity to valleys and other forms of irregular surface topographic features, the observed vertical subsidence at the base of the valley is less than that would be expected in flat terrain, while the valley sides are observed to move inwards towards the centre of the valley. The reduction in subsidence at the bottom of the valley is referred to as upsidence and the convergence of two sides of the valley is termed valley closure. Research coupled with mining experience over the past few decades in Australia has identified valley closure subsidence as being very real and quite significant part of non-conventional subsidence effects, which always have adverse effects on natural features, with risks to water flow and aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, we describe a threedimensional numerical modelling approach to investigate the geomechanical mechanisms which cause the valley closure subsidence behaviour, using distinct element computer package 3DEC. The calibrated models can accurately predict subsidence and horizontal displacements, and they are subsequently extended to specifically study the effect of a series of mining geological and topographical factors on valley closure subsidence phenomenon, by developing a range of hypothetical scenarios. Previous analyses carried out using a two-dimensional numerical modelling technique have identified the potential parameters that affect the valley closure subsidence, which mainly include longwall position, horizontal stresses, valley sloping angle, and valley shape. Further three-dimensional analyses regarding the relationships between the major factors and valley closure subsidence are discussed in this paper. The results have significant implications with regard to both the underlying mechanisms that lead to this nonconventional subsidence behaviour, and how these should be incorporated in future valley closure subsidence prediction and mitigation of its impacts on natural features.

"Mercury is produced as a byproduct from gold mines and, historically, has been transferred to recyclers and used for various industrial processes and products. However, under the Minamata Convention on Mercury, adopted in 2013,the intentional use of mercury in processes or products will be minimized in the world. Surplus elemental mercury should be treated as a hazardous waste and consequently, should be converted to a more stable chemical form for long-term storage or permanent disposal. A stabilization method has been developed to react mercury and sulfur using a planetary ball mill. The planetary ball mill can produce high-energy conditions and enable samples to react within a short period of time. A series of tests has been conducted to confirm that mercury sulfide can be produced using a bench scale machine with 2400 mL pot. Under a suitable experimental condition with 25 mm ball diameter, 30%of ball filling rate and 1.05 of molar ratio of S/Hg, a powdered mercury sulfide product was successfully obtained in 60 minutes. The leach ability and atmospheric emission from the product was extremely low. This stabilization method would contribute to an environmentally sound mercury management strategy for the gold industry.INTRODUCTIONDue to its unique physical and chemical properties, mercury has numerous applications, including in industry and medicine. However, mercury and its compounds are highly toxic. For example, in Japan, methyl mercury in waste water caused Minamata disease in the 1950s, which affected large numbers of people (Minamata Disease Municipal Museum, 2001). In recent years, environmental pollution caused by emissions and releases of mercury into the atmosphere, waterbody and land by various emission sources such as coal fire plants, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), non-ferrous metal industries, waste incinerations etc. has also become a significant problem. To protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and its compounds, the Minamata Convention on Mercury was adopted in 2013(UNEP, 2013)Because ground gold ore typically contains mercury at 0 to 100 ppm, mercury is often produced as a byproduct from gold mines (UNEP, 2016). In gold mining operations, mercury can be released from the ore by roasting or by leaching in cyanide solutions and recovery onto activated carbon. According to Yanget al. (2016), 85.1%of mercury in a concentrate was vaporized during a roasting process. Both processes finally discharge elemental mercury as a byproduct. In the USA, more than 100 ton of mercury was discharged from large-scale and industrial gold mining (Miller, 2004)."

"The coal industry is an important part of Canada's economy - as an energy source, employer, and generator of export earnings. Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. IntroductionThe coal industry is a vital part of the Canadian energy scene .• Coal supplies 17% of Canada's energy.• On a per capita basis, Albertans use more energy in the form of coal than they do oil and gas.• The value of Canada's exports of coal last year was equal in value to all the cars we imported from Japan.• Coal is our largest single export to our seco nd largest trading partner, Japan.• The value of coal produced in Canada exceeds the value of any other single mineral produced in thi s country.• In Alberta, the safety record for coal mines is on a par with that of department store clerks.• The coal industry employs about 25% of the total number of people employed in all metal mines in Canada, directly and indirectly accounting for about 50 000 jobs.Coal comprises 71% of Canada' s hydrocarbon energy resources on a crude oil equivalent basis . This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."

THE PURPOSE of this investigation was to study part of the ternary system Co-Fe-S. Jensen ( 1) established the solubility limits of sulphur in pyrrhotite. The compound with 61.7 per cent Fe, corresponding to a formula Fe12S13, was found to melt congruently at l,192°C. Hulsmann and Weibke(2) determined the Co-S phase diagram from O to 35.2 per cent S. The solubility limits of sulphur in the com-pound Co(l-x)S were not determined. The initial object of the present in-vestigation was to determine the composition at which the compound Coci-xiS melted congruently. Once this was ascertained, it was decided to investigate the ternary system Co-Fe-S from the region of 100 per cent Co(1-x) S to the region of 100 per cent Fe12S13.

"Fluid inclusion studies from the Cinola deposit indicate low salinities and low C01 contents of the ore fluid. This supports a suggestion that the mineralizing fluids originated from pore water in the fluviatile host rock (mid-Miocene Skonun Formation). Bimodal distribution of filling temperatures suggests the existence of at least two temperature regimes centred on 160°C and 270°C during mineral deposition. Independent age and stratigraphic evidence indicates that depth of mineralization is between 1.1 and 1. 8 km, corresponding to a hydrostatic load of between 110 and 170 bars.RESUMELes donnees sur les inclusions fluides du gisement Cinola indiquent de basses salinites et basses teneurs en C01 . When Dame Nature shook her horn of plenty and distributed her bounties over the face of the earth, she blessed the Pacific coast with many riches, but with these she added many offsetting disadvantages or handicaps, designed, no doubt, to effect a proper balance between wealth and economy. Nowhere is the application of the law of compensation more aptly illustrated than in the matter of fuel and power resources. A glance at the map of the Pacific northwest will show that west of the Coast Range batholith we are bounteously supplied with coal, with timber, with water power, and with tributary resources of oil from California. Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, all contain large resources of coal; Oregon and California to a lesser degree, but, compensating the golden state for its deficiency in this respect, oil was placed in the treasure ,chest. Timber, of wide variety and in lavish quantity, covers the forests from tidewater to mountain slope, and within this protected watershed area flow streams which give the Pacific coast states the largest single share of the potential water-power resources of the country. Something over 40 per cent. of the total estimated horsepower of the United States is to be found in the Pacific states, and British Columbia has 15 per cent. of the total for Canada; but of this total less than 10 per cent. has been developed.

"A short description of the chamber lift method for producing oil wells is followed by some comments on compressor requirements and gas utilization. A quantitative analysis of the process is presented and, based on this analysis, criteria are suggested for selecting wells for which this type of lift might be suitable. The analysis leads to the conclusions that chamber lift is an efficient producing mechanism for wells having very low productivity indices (say about 0.05 bbl/d/ p.s.i. or less), but that for such wells optimum utilization of injection gas cannot be attained. It is suggested that the gas injection time per cycle should be kept as low as possible, compatible with a small oil fallback volume, and that the cycle frequency should be in the range of 20-40 cycles/ day. For wells with productivity indices of 0.2 bbl/d/p.s.i. or higher, chamber lift is relatively inefficient; how-ever, if well allowables are low it may offer an attractive, low cost, alternative to gas lift or pumping."

"In order to establish some links between the 22 specimens found on the site of Les Forges du St. Maurice, their slag inclusions have been analyzed by electron microprobe. Comparison between their contents of various specific oxides allowed us to segregate them into two major groups and even to isolate two sub-groups possibly characterized by some equilibrium between their oxides and/or the type of ores used.In all probability, limes/one coupled systematically with a soil rich in hydrated aluminum silicates was used as a flux.Based upon the existence of a pseudo equilibrium between the slag and the metal, the elaboration of the bulk of the specimens can be ascribed to the indirect rather than the direct method whereas the process temperature can be estimated at at least /400°C.RESUMEDans le but d'etablir des liens entre les 22 objects provenant des Forges du St-Maurice, leurs inclusions de scories ont été analysées par microsonde. "Abstract- The Ontario Geological Survey completed a regional till sampling project between 1984 and 1988 in the Black River Matheson (BRiM) area of northeastern Ontario. The project was designed to aid mineral exploration in the area by documenting the Quatemary stratigraphy and by providing a database of till geochemistry. This paper summarizes the results from the sonic overburden drilling component of the BRiM project carried out in areas of thick drift (> 5 m). Results from till sampling in areas of thinner drift (<5 m) have been presented in a separate paper. Approximately 1100 till samples were collected from 225 sonic drill holes. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (> 3.3 S.G.) and fine (-250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically and visible gold grains were recovered by panning.Gold and other multielement geochemical data were plotted using proportional symbols to high­ light anomalous areas and to demonstrate how to evaluate and interpret a very large geochemical dataset. Thresholds for identifying anomalous concentrations of Au in till samples, defined using the 95th percentile, are 1500 ppb and 12 ppb for the heavy mineral and fine fractions, respectively. The heavy mineral fraction of older tills and to a lesser extent, Matheson Till, display a number of significant gold anomalies in the study area, which in a few cases, are associated with base metal anomalies. The vertical position of gold anomalies in Matheson and older tills varies from directly on bedrock to several meters above the bedrock surface and can provide information of relative ice transport distances."

"Seepage is a major cause of earth-rockfill dam failure. Numerical simulation of infiltration process, distribution of drift, flow velocity and direction after the impoundment can guide seepage control and evaluate its effects. A double field coupling model is established based on soil consolidation theory and the interaction between the seepage field and the temperature field. The simulation is implemented under the situation of core wall setted, core wall not setted, and core wall setted with concentrated leakage. The results indicated that the saturation line height was significantly reduced due to impervious core wall, and the temperature distribution is uniform above the saturation line. If concentrated leakage occurs, temperature distribution of dam was significantly changed, which is consistent with theoretical inference.INTRODUCTIONEngineering seepage field distribution must be calculated in seepage control design, optimization, and correction of new engineering construction of earth dams, as well as in seepage monitoring and evaluation of existing earth-rockfill dams. The aim of calculation is to identify the important parameters in seepage field, such as the coefficient of permeability, seepage flow, pressure, head, and allowable seepage slope, for effectively implementing seepage control design, correction, safety assessment, and anti-seepage reinforcement. These seepage parameters usually can be obtained by in-situ test and back-analysis based on reliable monitoring data.In order to obtain reliable monitoring data and reflect the earth-rockfill dam seepage state and change process, appropriate monitoring technology and monitoring method is necessary. "Mine Gallen is a zinc-rich pyritic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit that occurs in a fault-bounded block of intermediate volcanic rocks. The block is completely surrounded at the present erosion level by the eastern part of the Lac Dufault granodiorite. The volcanic succession includes a massive feldspar porphyry that is probably a subvolcanic intrusion, an andesitic flow unit and lapilli tuffs. The latter are variably sericitized and pyritic, especially in the vicinity of the massive sulphide into which they grade.The ore body is predominantly pyritewith local sphalerite contents as high as 20%; minor chalcopyrite and trace galena are disseminated, but are found mainly along late cleavage. Most ore is a breccia of massive to banded pyrite-sphalerite, veined by massive and complexly banded sulphides. These structures formed by repeated blocky jointing, cracking, sealing, healing and annealing as hydrothermal fluid repeatedly passed through a developing sulphide mound. The deposit is interpreted to have grown on the seafloor in a manner similar to active mounds in the Galapagos rift.RESUME La Mine Gallen exploite un gisement de sulfures massifs volcan géniques comprenant essentiellement de la pyrite riche en zinc. So far, most social performance monitoring systems have not gone beyond listing the impacts on various stakeholders. Executives have had to rely on intuition to devise interventions that would improve the impacts. This paper describes a survey process, known as the Stakeholder 360 (S360), which eliminates much of the guesswork. The paper reviews key studies showing that raising the levels of communication, trust, and common vision among stakeholders leads to the acquisition of the resources needed to improve the socio-economic situation. Therefore, the Stakeholder 360 measures the levels of these three factors in the relationships between a company and its stakeholders, and among the stakeholders themselves. In a validation study at a gold mine in rural Papua New Guinea, the S360 produced a socio-political ?roadmap? that showed management and stakeholders alike which relationships need more communication, trust, or common goals/vision. Management used the findings to create alliances that helped the government move forward on a regulatory regime for the mine closure. The community used the findings to focus its planning for life after the closure. An S360 survey conducted six months later revealed a decline in dependence on the mine and an overall increase in levels of mutual understanding.

"The property owned by the Lamaque Mining Company comprises a group of forty-four claims and fractions occupying an area of about 2,458 acres, in west-central Bourlamaque township, Abitibi county, Quebec. It is on ,the outskirts of the towns of Bourlamaque and Val d'Or, about 70 miles east of Noranda, near the eastern end of the belt of greenstones of Keewatin and Timiskaming age that extends eastward through Kirkland Lake into northwestern Quebec, terminating in Haig and Jurie townships 40 miles to the east.The claims on which the orebodies occur were first staked in 1923; No. 3 vein was discovered the following year. The original discovery was made by R. Clark in 1923. This was a small quartz vein containing a pocket of coarse gold on the north side of a hill near the northwestern corner of block 3. It is said that all the gold was removed in one shot in blasting into the vein; elsewhere it was barren. A picket line was then run west along the strike of the vein, which occupied a narrow shear zone, and about 2,000 feet west, in prospecting on either side of the picket line, a large boulder of quartz and tourmaline containing visible gold was found. This led to more intensive prospecting by trenching in the vicinity with the result that the No. 3, or 'float' vein, about 250 feet north of the boulder, was found. Due to low ground this vein was exposed in only one trench. The only other important vein found on the surface was the No. 1, or H, vein, which was exposed in several places by stripping and trenching, but it did not carry appreciable amounts of gold."

"This paper addresses the occurrence and indicated causes of conveyor fires in North American and European underground mines. Some significant convey or fires which have been experienced in recent years in Canadian hardrock mines are then reviewed. The nature of existing conveyor monitoring technology is considered in the context of such fire hazards. Experiences with new monitoring technology recently installed at several conveyor sites at Inca Ltd. mines are then reviewed.IntroductionFires associated with conveyors have long been recognized as a serious hazard in underground coal mines. Recently, however, there have been some significant conveyor fires in Canadian underground hardrock mines. These offer important evidence as to the nature and causes of potential hardrock mine fifes. They also warrant attention with a view to improving over-all mine design, ventilation and emergency preparedness.In addition, a new era in mine communications and monitoring technology has been entered which should offer improved capability to protect against such fires. This paper was motivated by the need to understand the causes and mechanisms of conveyor fires in order to improve their safety. This should be possible through implementing more effective monitoring systems, as well as improving conveyor design. Underground mines are becoming more intensively mechanized, with less human surveillance of equipment and a greater dependency on remote monitoring systems."

"While it might seem like heresy to suggest that ""taxation"" can be a source of financing, never the less some generous tax rules can considerably enhance the tax savings pertaining to a particular expenditure or project. A basic tax knowledge, and careful tax planning, can optimize government participation in a project. INTRODUCTIONIn trying to identify sources of financing for a project, ""government"" as a source of funding is normally thought of in terms of government grants, loan guarantees, interest rate buy downs, property tax waivers, hydro subsidies, and so on. Generally, such concessions are somewhat difficult to obtain, especially in the current period of apparent fiscal restraint. One source of government funding which should not be overlooked is the income tax regime, and, at the provincial level, the various provincial mining tax regimes.While the taxpayer would not normally view a tax system as a potential source of government financing, nevertheless various federal and provincial rules applicable to the mining industry can offer attractive tax deductions - and tax savings - with respect to particular expenditures. In fact, it is not unusual for a civil servant to refer to a tax deduction as a tax ""subsidy"". For example, in the right circumstances, the cost of a smelter expansion in New Brunswick would cost the operator only 31 cents on the dollar, with the federal and provincial governments paying for the other 69 cents by foregoing tax revenues (Table I). In a sense, such tax savings could be compared to a government grant equal to 69% of project costs. Of course, not every project expenditure will generate that degree of government funding. The fact of the matter is that the percentages of tax savings attached to different expenditures cover a wide range, depending on a complex mix of factors. The point to understand is that the tax rules can offer some valuable savings, even after tax reform, and that a basic knowledge of the tax rules can yield some fruitful rewards."

"Accelerated expansion of Western Canada's metallurgical coal industry has again stimulated considerable exploration activity in the Rocky Mountain Foothills Belt and influenced much of the R&D related to transportation, processing and carbonization. Preparation R&D has included further pilot-plant work on desulphurization, spherical agglomeration and modified compound cyclones (which are also proving themselves in other mineral beneficiation studies). Combustion research, aside from increasingly stressing control of combustion source pollution, has directed special attention to lignite PF firing and problems arising from lignite ash. Studies directed toward the non-fuel utilization of coal have centered on such diverse topics as active carbons, carbonaceous filter media, plant nutrients and industrial applications of humic acid derivatives. In addition, a number of long-range research projects related to such matters as coal chemistry and pyrolysis have been actively pursued, and further attention has been given to improved sampling techniques and analytical methods."

Measurements of the settling rates and the rheological behaviour of heavy media formed of fine suspensions in water of each of magnetite, ferrosilicon, and galena have been made. For media ranging from 1.6 to 2.8 specific gravity the settling measurements gave initial settling rates of from 0.5 to 0.01 ?cm. &apos;Per minute for magnetite; from 4.0 to 0.8 cm. per minute for galena; and from 35 to 1.6 cm. &apos;Per minute for ferrosilicon. These measurements indicate the ?relative stability of the suspensions and should be helpful in establishing the useful specific gravity range for each medium. Measurements of the consistency of the media were made with a Fann Model 35 rotational viscometer. Aibnormal or non-Newtonian behaviour was observed in the case of each media, the apparent viscosity being dependent upon the rate of shear or the intensity of motion. Measurements were made over the rate of shear range of 10? to 1,000 reciprocal seconds. The apparent viscosities of the magnetite media ranged from 450 down to 4?0 centipoise at 2.30 specific gravity, and from 2,450 down to 700 centipoise at 2.80 specific gravity. In the case of the galena media, the variation was from 40, through a minimum of 6, to 10 centipoise at 2.20 specific gravity, and from 950, through a minimum of 180, to 450 centipoise at 3.6 specific gravity. The ferrosilicon suspensions exhibited apparent viscosities ranging from 42, through a minimum of 5.6, to 9 centipoise at 1.9 specific gravity, and from 160, though a minimum of 35, to 85 centipoise at 2.8 specific gravity. The dependency of apparent viscosity or consistency upon intensity of motion is considered to be of particular significance in applications of heavy media where the medium is in rapid motion.

This paper is in the nature of a protest against the dangerous propaganda afoot for the prevention of new mining undertakings and which is based on the imaginary &apos;blue ruin&apos; conditions supposed to exist in the industry. An article by Mr. G. R. Pratt, A.M.E.I.C. in the first issue of the Western Canada News, February 2nd, 1925, and entitled "Review of Coal Mining in Alberta", is an excellent example of this type of propaganda. The article is a tissue of misstatements, faulty deductions and erroneous conclusions. For instance it contains the statement that some coal measures in Alberta are mined at great depth - whereas we all know that there is no coal mined at great depth anywhere in the province; another error is the classification of all mines under one head irrespective of whether they are mining prospects, &apos;country banks&apos;, or pukka mines equipped with railway facilities; and I believe that suppressio veri is tantamount to suggestio falsi. The bulk of his article hinges on a Table 1, which shows the details of coal produced in Alberta during 1923. Studying this table Mr. Pratt, in the manner of a conjurer producing rabbits from a hat, offers the following for the confusion of the public:- (1) "Waste effort, want of capital, waste of coal resources which result from unrestricted development"; the fact being that the waste is due to the failure of the Department of the Interior to exercise the powers which are inherent in the form of lease.
