"A set of new blast damage criteria has been developed, with special reference to blasthole mining operations, for assessing damage by incorporating the vibration level, rock properties, site characteristics and the effects of ground support systems. The main objective of this work was to provide a database with reasonable accuracy for use in optimizing blast design, numerical analysis and ground control expert system module development.The new damage criteria allow one to estimate the degree of damage to rock structures in terms of a dimensionless parameter defined as Blast Damage Index (BDI). This allows for the description of blast damage in a unified form, and facilitates the development of codes for numerical modelling to express the degree of blast damage universally. A number of field investigations from several stope production and slot opening blasts at a large underground base metal mine were carried out to verify the developed index. The results show a good correlation between the observed damage and the type of damage predicted from the BDI values.Practical measures are also provided for minimizing blast damage in large underground blasthole mining operations"

The objective s of this paper are: (a ) to examine and discuss the burdens we place on our extractive industry; (b) to compare the levels of taxation in Canada with those in other countries; and ( c) to suggest certain broad parameters within which our taxation policies may be made more rational and stable. Among the burdens identified are taxation, the ownership and use of our resources, environmental issues and the rather emotional issue of so-called 'super profits'. Finally, the paper will address certain broad but key areas of policy which need attention and agreement if our tax system is to be made more rational. Such areas include: whether and if so why the extractive industry should be given incentives;. what circumstances, if any, justify a 'higher' than normal' level of taxation, and, ?if the concept of economic rents is a justifiable one, how might a basis for them be established which recognizes the fluctuating value of much of the industry's output. Note: The paper was written before the 1977 Federal and Provincial budgets were presented. Consequently, the paper does not reflect any changes proposed in these budgets.

"LocationThe Gibraltar mine is located in central British Columbia (NTS 93B/9W), 362 km north of Vancouver. Access is provided by 20 km of paved road from McLeese Lake, which lies 45 km north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Latitude and longitude of the mine are 52° 30' and 122° 16', respectively.The total area of the McLeese Lake site is approximately 1700 ha (4200 acres). This includes the orebodies, dumps, surface drainage collection system, plant site, roads and tailings ponds.Brief Description of OperationOre is mined by open pit methods and is concentrated using conventional crushing, grinding and flotation processes. Copper and molybdenum flotation occurs at an average rate of 40 000 tons per day. Tailing is discharged to an impoundment area and the water recycled as process water. Additional copper is extracted from the waste dumps using sulphuric acid as a leach solution followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning.HistoryExploration by Gibraltar began in 1964, continuing until late 1970, at which time it was announced that the property would go into production. Construction started in early 1971, with initial production in March 1972. Target capacity of 30 000 tons per day was achieved by the end of March and is currently at 40 000 tons per day.Ore reserves as of January 1, 1998 were 184 384 000 tons grading 0.31% Cu and 0.010% MoS2."

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of non-ferrous metals. In recent years, significant progress has been made in research and commercial application of pressure leaching technology to produce some nonferrous metals. Research and development activities include a low-pressure, low-temperature leaching technology for complex copper concentrates, a hematite process to treat pressure leach solutions from zinc concentrates, and a pressure leaching - solvent extraction process for molybdenum and rhenium. Examples of commercial practices include a two-stage pressure leach technology in a zinc plant in Danxia, a direct leaching technology in a zinc plant in Zhuzhou, a high pressure acid leaching process for a nickel laterite project in RAMU, and a pressure leaching technology to treat arsenic sulfides in a plant in Guixi. The development of pressure leaching technology for the recovery of lead, vanadium, gallium, germanium, and precious metals in China will also be described in this paper.

"The Acheson D-3 Pool was discovered in August 1950, and contains 88 producing oil wells on 40 acre spacing. Initial oil-in-place was 118 million stock tank barrels and initial well potentials averaged 2,000 barrels per day.In early 1956 studies of hydraulic interference between the Acheson and Leduc D-3 Pools were conducted on the Carter Petroleum Reservoir Analyzer. These studies indicated that the natural water drive to Acheson would be incapable of replacing reasonable withdrawal rates over the life of the pool. To avoid shrinkage losses a scheme of pressure maintenance by water• injection was therefore instituted in March 1957.This pressure maintenance scheme is notable because pressure is being effectively maintained by high volume injection through one well located on the flank of the pool. Close control on reservoir behaviour is maintained by regular bottom-hole pres-sure surveys and observation of water cuts on producing wells. No evidence of pressure gradients or channelling of the injected water has been observed to date, and the water-oil contact has remained level over the whole field. It is possible to control the average reservoir pressure within very close limits by varying the rate of fresh water injection.Ultimate recovery estimated from the rise of the oil-water contact and calculated water influx to December 31, 1958, is 335 barrels per acre foot, or a total of 91.4 million barrels from the pool. This compares to 217 barrels Per acre foot or a total of 59.4 million barrels indicated from laboratory test data."

The elements of this approach include clearly defined objectives, technical considerations and personnel policies, all of which are equally important. The goal is a significant discovery before the mid-1990s and the company is confident that this target will be achieved.

"To optimize gold recovery in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, Gekko Systems developed the Gekko resin exchange column (G-REX) as an intermediate step, using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin. Operational experience has been gained at the Castlemaine Goldfields Ballarat gold mine. In near-continuous operation since 2008, the Ballarat plant treats unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of this technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.RÉSUMÉ Afin d’optimiser la récupération de l’or dans des procédés complexes impliquant la lixiviation suivie de l’extraction électrolytique, Gekko Systems a développé la colonne Gekko de résines échangeuses d’ions (G-REX) comme étape intermédiaire, à l’aide d’une résine hautement sélective pour la récupération de l’or qui permet d’isoler les métaux contaminants. This resin is highly selective for gold and silver over many metals, by way of extracting precious metal–cyanide complexes from leach solutions with a pH of less than 11.5. The higher end of the pH scale produces the best selectivity according to the order of preference: Au > Ag > Hg > Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Fe. Purolite produces the resin and Gekko Systems maintains licensing of AuRIX100 resin for use in its G-REX column, as part of its unique suite of gravity gold–handling equipment.Significant cost savings over carbon-in-solution (CIS) systems are realized with AURIX100 resin: approximately 4–12% in capital savings and 27–40% in operating costs (Virnig, Mackenzie, Katsikaros, & Gray, 2004). Additionally, AuRIX100 resin is not susceptible to fouling; that is, the resin does not load with inorganic salts or organic compounds that would affect the loading and extraction of precious metals. To counter any potential for fouling by inorganic salts, a dilute acid wash is periodically conducted in service on the resin to unblock resin pores."

For the past several months 1 have been considering the functions of this Society and its reasons for continuance. The fact that it is now sixty years old indicates that it must have been of value and we all know that it has contributed much that was worthwhile to Nova Scotia and the Maritime Provinces. The question arises: "What is the future of the Society, and how might its activities be altered to suit present-day activities and to be of even greater value?" Let us analyse the various activities in which we are interested and determine which, if any, are of more value than others. First of all, at least once a year we have a two-day convention which constitutes a holiday for the members and their wives. This has always been well planned and has been much enjoyed. Second, there are many social and business contacts made during the meetings and interim meetings. These certainly tend toward better relations and co-operation between the various people concerned. Mine operators meet other mine operators, engineers, people from the education fields, Department of Mines, and so forth. Various sales contacts are made at these meetings which can be of value and use to both the Company selling and the customer. Third, and of greatest importance in any conference, is the exchange of ideas by the members and by authorities from outside, and the presentation of slides and drawings, or actual visits to operations. It is upon this phase that 1 wish to elaborate. These papers are not only presented to our meetings but are generally published in the C.I.M. Bulletin so that members throughout the Dominion have access to them. Many important papers describing new phases of operations have originated through our Society.

In this paper we examine, through pilot-scale testing, the possibility of operating a circuit comprised of two stages of HPGR comminution, followed by grinding through a horizontal stirred mill. In order to assess whether the novel circuit design could achieve the reduced energy requirements indicated in the literature, two more-established circuits, a cone crusher / ball mill and an HPGR / ball mill, were examined using a combination of testing and flowsheet simulation. The results showed that, based solely on the specific energy requirements for comminution, the HPGR / stirred mill circuit achieved a reduction of 9.2% and 16.7% over the HPGR / ball mill and cone crusher / ball mill circuits, respectively.

Photogrammetry surveys were used to document a footwall slab failure that occurred at a surface coal mine located on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. Photographs taken before and after the failure provided the pre- and post-failure geometry of the slope and the failed slab. A 2D finite element model was constructed using slope profiles. The model contained joint elements that represented the bedding surface upon which the slab slid and the model was used to analyze the footwall slope. The in situ stresses, rock properties and the bedding surface shear strength and stiffness properties are discussed. The process of mining out a valley and exposing a highwall was modelled. As expected, elastic valley rebound occurred in the model, but shear stress and shear displacement reversals along the slip surface were also observed. The modelling results provided new insight into shear strength degradation that occurs when the pit floor approaches and then passes a specific point in the highwall.

"AbstractA number of plant-scale cyanidation tests were carried out in an attempt to uncover the causes of fluctuations in gold recovery efficiency. Computer analysis of the results verified that the treatment of reclaimed waste rock material along with normal run-of-mine ore was having an adverse effect on metallurgical efficiency. Mineralogical examinations showed that the free gold particles in the dump material were heavily tarnished or coated (predominantly by hydrated iron oxide), accounting for the lower recoveries. The indications were that the effect could be counteracted somewhat by using higher than normal cyanide and lime reagent concentrations and adequate leaching times. Analysis of the results showed further that leach pulp density was an important operating parameter affecting extraction efficiency. A variable activation energy leaching model provided an extremely good characterization of individual batch leach runs.IntroductionFLUCTUATING METALLURGICAL EFFICIENCY at the gold concentrator of the S.A. ABSTRACT This paper evaluates the potential of freeze-thaw dewatering using Albian mature fine tailings (MFT). Freezing tests were first performed to study the effect of freezing rate on dewatering efficiency. Lower freezing rate resulted in higher thawed solids content and shear strength. Subsequently, large strain consolidation tests were conducted to investigate consolidation behaviour and how it is affected by freeze-thaw. The consolidation behaviour was presented in terms of effective stress versus void ratio and permeability versus void ratio. The results can be used to predict the field behaviour of Albian MFT and optimize the application of freeze-thaw for MFT dewatering.

"Starting January 1, 1987 employers, employees, and other taxpayers are confronted with a new set of rules dealing with the taxation of travel and housing benefits relating to isolated posts in Canada, and tax deductions relating thereto. The new rules may not be the simplest in the world, but they are reasonably fair and at least offer a hitherto unknown degree of certainty as to how such allowances are to be treated. IntroductionThe first shoe fell on February 26, 1986 when Finance Minister Michael Wilson' s first budget presented the framework for the future tax treatment of travel and housing benefits (so-called ""northern allowances"") provided to residents in remote regions of Canada. The second shoe fell some ten months later on December 22, 1986 when the Minister of Finance filled in the earlier announced framework with detailed rules. We now have a complete picture of the tax treatment of northern allowances. Here is what the picture looks like with effect from January 1, 1987.According to Revenue Canada, the net housing benefit to employees will be equal to the value of the accommodation provided, less any rent they have paid. In major centres such as Yellowknife and Whitehorse, having a developed rental housing market, the benefit amount will be based on the fair market value of the rental accommodation in that location. In other areas, employers will be required to value the housing benefits and, to assist employers, Revenue Canada has provided the following guidelines: Common shelter- $100 per month including the value of subsidized utilities Apartment! duplex-$270 per month excluding the value of subsidized utilities, or $400 per month including the value of subsidized utilities House-$450 per month excluding the value of subsidized utilities, or $650 per month in- c1uding the value of subsidized utilities.The amounts established as the values of accommodation will be adjusted annually after 1987 based on the housing component of the Consumer Price Index."

This paper reviews industrial gases used in primary copper production. Copper smelting industrial gas demand has steadily increased since the first commercial oxygenconcentrate smelting in 1952 [1]. In copper production oxygen for smelting is the dominant industrial gas use followed by oxygen for converting. Nitrogen is finding increased use in copper smelters. Nitrogen is used for porous plugs for copper converting and anode refining [2-5]. Nitrogen can be used for concentrate drying [6,7] and is also used in some Ni-Cu smelters as a coolant in Peirce-Smith converting [8,9]. Industrial gas supply options of cryogenic or adsorbent based on-site plant or cryogenic liquid delivery are detailed.

In his April 10, 1978 budget address, Finance Minister Chretien declared that the federal government will restrict the growth of its spending to less than the trend growth of the gross national product; over the past year, both the federal and a number of provincial governments have taken action to cut back on spending policies. This new emphasis in restraint would seem 10 be a response to a mounting public reaction to the rapid growth of government spending - and taxation - over the past 25 years. Although this relatively new government posture on public spending may be admired by many, to others it raises the question: "Can the growth in government spending really be stopped?" This article comments on just how government revenues - and spending - have grown over the past few years in Canada, and mentions some of the issues relating to a slowdown in that growth.

"PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor underground mine use blasting to develop its tunnels which will cause poisonous and dangerous gases trapped inside mine. To analyze this case, a study of mine ventilation, the dispersion of carbon monoxide (CO) gas concentration and diffusion coefficient is commenced. At the end, the re-entry time formula will be determined. Results indicate that this study is site specific and could only be applied in the place this study executed. The aim of this study is to be further developed by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to find a universal re-entry formula. Thus, its development and production processes require blasting to develop its tunnel. This process caused poisonous and dangerous gases spread and trapped inside the mine, one of them is carbon monoxide (CO) gas. CO is formed in an unbalanced reaction of explosives detonation and could be the cause of headache, blackout and death to people who inhale CO at certain concentration (McPherson, 2011; Hartman, Mutmansky, Ramani, & Wang, 2012). Mine ventilation system is installed in the mine to resolve this problem. Mine ventilation play an important role to disperse CO gas by absorb the poisonous/dangerous gases and deliver clean air into mine. The important parameter is diffusion coefficient, because diffusion is affecting particulates or gasses spreading from its sources throughout the mine. Diffusion coefficient is the total diffusion in axial direction of turbulent flow mainly by convection of bulk motion, advection and eddy diffusion, while the effect of molecular diffusion is appreciably negligible (Widiatmojo et al, 2015). Taylor (1953, 1954) develops a theory about the dispersion by inducing a slow stream of solvent into a capillary tube. Taylor used Reynolds assumption of radial diffusivity to be analogous with the transfer of the matter in turbulent flow as well as the transfer of momentum and heat. Introduction THE Sullivan mine and the milling, smelting, and refining operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company are sufficiently well known to make unnecessary anything more than a very brief account of the events which led up to this Company's branching out into the chemical industry. This development is the result of the 26 per cent sulphur content of the Sullivan ore. Seventy-five to eighty per cent of this sulphur enters the mill tailing, which is stocked at Kimberley. The remainder, contained in the lead and zinc concentrate, is burned off in the first treatments at Trail. Prior to this new development, the sulphur gas was wasted to the atmosphere. In spire of its great dilution with air and discharge from stacks at high elevations above the plant, some damage to vegetation close to the plant was experienced. It had always been apparent that this sulphur should be recovered and utilized if possible, at the same rime relieving, or curing, the smoke nuisance, and constant studies with this in view had, therefore, been maintained. One of the early conclusions reached was that the Canadian prairies would ultimately require large quantities of phosphate fertilizers, as had been the experience of older countries, and that these fertilizers would constitute a large outlet for sulphuric acid which could be made from smelter gases. This conclusion prompted a widespread search for phosphate rock, particularly in British Columbia and western Alberta, with the result that low-grade beds were discovered in the Crowsnest district and to the north therefrom through extensive areas (1). Following these discoveries, an experimental plant was built at Trail for the production of triple superphosphate in order to facilitate field-tests in fertilizing prairie lands.

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. "THE COAL INDUSTRY of the United States• and Canada has made great progress in recent years. Coal mining in •the old days represented one of the most arduous tasks for labour and industry, but over the years great progress has been made in reducing the effort required from labour. Also, the tonnage produced per man, the cost of the coal per ton, and the overall safety of the operation, have been greatly improved.Looking back over the past fifty years:, the era can be divided into four principal parts: (a) hand-loading, (b) track mining methods, (c) off-track mining methods, and (d) continuous mining. For many years, all of the coal was won by hand-mining methods. The first forms of mechanization •resembled the move from the horse •and buggy to the automobile. Early track mechanical mining methods were usually adaptations of the direct methods involved in hand-mining, with each improvement directed toward some specific process. A revolutionary development came about with off-track mining methods. The first efforts in this direction were provided by off-track mechanical loading machines, which loaded the cars •on track and differed from conventional track mining methods only in that the loading machines themselves operated on the mine floor. With the advent -of the shuttle car about ten years ago, true off-track mining came into being, and real progress in this direction began to be made.At the present time we •are at the beginning of a new era -.the era of continuous mining. There will be a period of development with some time needed before the system is generally applied throughout the industry, but -already enough •has been done to indicate rather dearly what the future holds in this direction."

"An investigation carried out to determine the tendency of coals to heat spontaneously in terms of time-temperature curves coupled with the resulting oxidation products in an adiabatically controlled laboratory setup is described. Tests were made at differing moisture conditions, including oxidation and also oxidation with either adsorption or desorption of water vapour on coal.From the experimental evidence, there is reason to believe that the oxidation of coal, although an important factor, is not the predominant one in the development of spontaneous heating. In addition to the temperature increase in coal and the gaseous products evolved due to auto-oxidation, the process is accelerated by adsorption and retarded by desorption of water vapour on coal."
