I HAVE considerable hesitation in preparing and presenting this paper. These machines have been such an intimate part of my own experiences and predilections for such a long time that J would find it difficult to tell the story in an impersonal way. They have had several attractions for me. They were needed for the study of the fundamental features of modern milling, size analysis and accurate batch concentration of the very fine particles. I had been a millman once, a real operating millman, and, when I became academic". I always had the craving to link the academic laboratory with the field, as Rittinger and Richards had done. My first milling experience was with a small concentrator at a tin mine in Bohemia, forty-seven years ago. There was no assay office and the testing of our tailings was by means of a "Vanning Shovel", introduced from Cornwall by Captain Josiah Thomas, the great Josiah of Dolcoath, some fifteen years previously. This was a most effective instrument and it has always been a puzzle to me that it has not been more universally used by millmen. Later, at Freiberg, on the other side of the Erz Gebirge from the tin mine, I was introduced to the "Sichertrog", made out of wood shaped something like a very shallow boat or an elongated saucer, a most effective piece of apparatus when. the difficult technique of handling it was once achieved. Later, in the Slocan in British Columbia, my partner, the late Maurice Bucke, used a short length of flat trough or launder suspended by four wires, with which he got very satisfactory results as a small batch concentrator. In the University laboratory we had frequent need for something of this kind, and many efforts were made to solve the problem. With W. E. Johnston, we were working on the problem of gold-bearing telluride ores, which called insistently for a separation of the very fine telluride particles which existed only in minute quantities in the Kirkland Lake ores. Under this spur there finally developed the Superpanner, which is a mechanized combination of the Vanning Shovel, the Sichertrog, and the Maurice Bucke suspended launder.

The lower and the upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation, Hubei Province, China, contain silicate-type K-rich beds (illite and feldspar), and intraclastic phosphorites, as well as Ag-V and V deposits in a "Black Shale Series". The K-rich beds fonned in an anoxic basin whereas the phosphorites fonned in a more oxic and higher energy depositional environment. The Black Shale Series occurs in the lower and upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation; that in the upper part consists of black illite shale and dark gray dolostone, and contains Se-rich Ag and V deposits. These deposits are of more industrial significance than the previously discovered Ni-Mo polyelement sulfide deposits which occur in the Lower Cambrian Black Shales Series of South China. Studies of lithotype, sedimentary sequence, and geochemistry of the Doushantuo Fonnation have led to more attention being focused on the uppennost Black Shale Series and its Ag-V and V deposits. There are three ore types: black, Ag-V-rich, illite shale; black, V-rich, illite shale; and dark gray, Ag-Vrich, fmely crystalline dolostone. The first two ore types contain 3070 to 5% Corg and the last, 1.25%. The Ag-bearing minerals are naumannite, argyrodite, aguilarite, acanthite, and native silver that occur as inclusions in pyrite associated with barite. Vanadium substitutes for AI in illite and is also related to organic-matter contents. Because (1) the pre-Sinian Kongling Group contains one to three times greater than the Clark Ag value; (2) black, illite shale has a negative Ce anomaly; and (3) there are large occurrences of black, K-rich, tuffaceous, fme siltstone, the sources of Ag are thought to include subaerial and submarine volcanic materials. It is proposed that Ag, V, and Se were absorbed by clay particles and organic matter during syngenetic deposition in an anoxic environment; Ag subsequently was reconcentrated into sulfides and selenides, whereas V was incorporated structurally into illite during early and late diagenesis. These types of Black Shale Series-hosted Ag-V and V deposits are, therefore, considered to be sedimentary-diagenetic in origin.

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells generate electricity by reacting hydrogen and oxygen. A thin, bipolar electrode material provides a medium for electron exchange with the electrolyte, alternately serving as anode at the hydrogen-rich side and cathode at the oxygen-rich side. Stainless steels have sufficient corrosion resistance to qualify as bipolar plate materials. However, the protective chromite layer increases the contact resistance, the battery’s internal resistance; and thus, decreases the electrical efficiency of the fuel cell. A heat-treatment is proposed and investigated via simulation by ThermoCalc / Dictra and experimentally, to generate a sufficient quantity of conducting surface carbides that breach the protective layer. Once carbide growth is arrested, a subsequent heat-treatment is also needed at a higher temperature to restore the corrosion resistance by filling-in the Cr-depleted layer (sensitization) around the carbide particles.

"Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. Dans le présent article, l’accent est mis sur une méthode novatrice de modélisation de la population à haute teneur par la simulation conditionnelle des volumes discrets d’or (pépites) au moyen de procédés marqués de Poisson et de Cox. La limite d’utilisation et d’autres manipulations ad hoc des données ne sont pas requises; toutefois, il faut une carte des intensités pour le processus ponctuel. Abstract A division of part of the Canadian Shield into provinces believed to represent former mountain belts is attempted, special emphasis- being laid upon radioactive age determinations, the relation of Archaean to Proterozoic rocks, and the structure of the Grenville province. Original data on the distribution of radioactivity within several batholiths and their connection with ore deposits are' presented. The possible growth of continents and a theory which explains the shape and distribution of the world's younger mountain and island areas are discussed and applied to the Canadian Shield in an attempt to explain how the growth and present structure came about. The relation of the major mining camps of northeastern Ontario to fault zones is discussed in the light of this theory. Introduction The valuable symposium issued by this Institute to celebrate its jubilees emphasizes the important role of major faults in determining the location of many ore deposits in the Canadian Shield. Many of these faults are known to extend for long distances. It is therefore widely appreciated that it would be of great value if the pattern, ages, and causes of these faults were better understood. This would be particularly useful if the relations of the major fault systems to petrological and metallogenic provinces and to former mountain belts could be established. Each year the volume of available data, and hence the chance of reaching a fuller solution of this problem, increases. This article is a review of the present situation. It is accordingly based almost wholly upon the work and ideas of others, which are gratefully acknowledged. Naturally, responsibility for the selection and marshalling of the data is the writer's.

The dynamic properties of the KYF-320 flotation machine which is one of the biggest flotation machines in the world were tested and then verified by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Aeration rate testing results suggest that he effect of circulation holes on the fluid state in the flotation cell becomes gradually smaller when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The dispersion degree of air increases with the increasing impeller speed and decreases with the increasing aeration rate, and it increases slightly when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The air holdup increases and then decreases with the increasing impeller speeds and aeration rates, and a maximum value of air holdup is shown at impeller speed of 107 r/min with a value of 12.28%. CFD simulation results are in good agreement with these testing results. Industrial-scale test was carried out using this 320 m3 flotation machine for the flotation of Cu ores. The results show that Cu content increases from 0.06% of crude ore to 1.26% of concentrate, and the S content increases from 0.39% of crude ore to 24.83% of concentrate. Moreover, using this flotation machine 5.88% of power is saved compared to other type of large flotation machine.

"Goldcorp has embarked upon an ambitious, industry-leading, multi-year water use reduction effort. This is a proactive, voluntary effort that reflects our commitment to truly sustainable mining. This effort will focus on increasing water re-use and recycling, and reducing water inputs ultimately towards zero. All of our operating mines are expected to contribute to this effort and are currently in the process of developing plans to meet short and long term objectives. One of the largest needle movers to increase water re-use and recycling is in the area of tailings management. Within five to ten years at Goldcorp, it is envisioned that the need for wet tailings dams will be eliminated and that all new tailings facilities will consist of only filtered or dewatered tailings. Filtered tailings is developing into a mature technology with wide application in mine waste management. This paper describes a conceptual level evaluation on the transition from a slurry to a filtered tailings operation at the Cerro Negro mine in southern Argentina. Key benefits and challenges are highlighted.INTRODUCTION Goldcorp’s Cerro Negro operation is located in the Santa Cruz province in the Patagonian region of Argentina. Cerro Negro has been in operation since 2014 and commercial production was achieved on January 1, 2015. The processing capacity of the plant is 4,000 tonnes of ore per day and in 2016 produced 363,000 ounces of gold and 3.1 million ounces of silver (Goldcorp Inc., 2017). As the mine is located in a semi-arid area, it is important to evaluate technologies that could reduce freshwater consumption and maximize water re-use and recycle rates. The current tailings operation at Cerro Negro incorporates pumping of tailings slurry into a conventionally lined Tailings Storage Facility (TSF). Water is reclaimed from the tailings supernatant pond to the process plant via pumps, however, water losses occur due to evaporation and solution retention within the slurry tailings voids. Converting to a filtered or dewatered tailings operation would allow for increased water recovery prior to tailings disposal, and decreased water losses from evaporation and from retention in the tailings solids void space. This paper describes a conceptual level evaluation on the transition to filtered or dewatered tailings with the primary objective of moving closer Towards Zero Water."

Production at Knob Lake is currently proceeding at depths which may be as much as 200 feet below the original standing water table. In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. The Polokwane Smelter Complex (PSC) relies on a single 68MW high-intensity six-in-line furnace to smelt a planned 650 000 t/a dry concentrate to produce a platinum group metals (PGM)-bearing matte. As typical of a greenfields venture, considerable attention was paid to the project development and implementation stages of design, engineering, construction and commissioning. Somewhat unusual though, was the role of a dedicated multi-disciplinary "Operational Readiness" and support team, comprising the owners team and specialists from the furnace designer, HATCH, to effect a safe and rapid ramp-up to the design smelter capacity of 68MW. The challenges encountered in developing an effective partnership will be discussed. The modus operandi and roles of the "Operational Readiness" team during the design, procurement, construction and commissioning stages as well as that of the operational support team within the overall ramp-up objective will be presented. "In this work, we apply a method known as the attainable region (AR) technique in order to optimize the milling and leaching process of a low grade gold ore. No work on the application of the AR optimization technique has been done yet on a joint milling and leaching process. The advantage of the AR approach lies in its ability to simplify the optimization problem, as searching over a defined set for the maximum of an objective function is a fairly standard procedure. The objective function we selected was that of optimizing a linear function of the value of the recovered material minus the cost of both milling and leaching. Using the three variables (milling time, leaching time and recovery), we constructed a 3D plot and used it to obtain all the possible recoveries from the different milling and leaching times. The optimum for our chosen objective was then found by overlaying a contour plot of the objective function on the 3D plot. Our results show that the optimum was obtained at 90 % recovery with a profit value of 600, milling time of 30 minutes and leaching time of 1750 minutes.INTRODUCTIONAfrican countries are facing a general increase in demand for electrical power. In South Africa, the demand is now surpassing the supply from ESKOM, the main electric power provider of the country. This has resulted in load shedding strategies being implemented in many local communities in an attempt by ESKOM to cope with the high demand. A potentially better approach is to propose use of energy efficient technologies in the country’s largest power consuming industry; the mineral processing sector.In mineral processing, milling is the highest consumer of energy. The objective of carrying out milling is not merely to reduce the particle size of the feed material, but also to liberate the constituent minerals that make up an ore. This is done so that valuable minerals can be separated from the gangue, in downstream processes, such as leaching. However, the milling process is generally performed relatively poorly, and at a considerable expense in terms of electrical power utilization. Tomanec and Milovanovic (1994) estimated that milling accounts for more than 50 % of the total power used in the concentration process, but this can rise to as high as 70 % for hard or finely dispersed and inter-grown ores. Apart from being relatively wasteful of energy, the milling process is also inefficient with regard to mineral liberation because of the indiscriminate nature of the grinding force."

"This paper charts, briefly, the :salient facts of international trade in minerals and their products and Canada's place in it. It also reviews inter-national agreements, economic groupings and national measures to channel and regulate production and trade in minerals. Canada's mineral industry now produces raw materials worth $3.7 billion per year, making this country a giant among mineral producers. Two-thirds of this production is exported, chiefly to the United States, accounting for about 30 per cent of Canada's merchandise exports and topping all other classes.However, several other nations are also pressing the development of their mineral resources and markets. The Soviet Bloc, China and principally Australia and Africa are becoming important suppliers of basic raw materials to some traditional markets of Canada in Europe and Japan.The outlook for Canadian mineral exports to the countries of the Common Market, Great Britain and Japan is good, although some tariff barriers remain troublesome.Concerning the United States, our most important market, Canada is seeking to have that country lift import quotas on lead and zinc, and re-cent statements by U.S. authorities give hope that this may be achieved soon. Moreover, Canada wishes to obtain easier access to the American market for several of its metals and minerals.Canada is now participating in the Kennedy Round of tariff talks under the auspices of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and is seeking to open wider doors for its exports of products.In summary, Canada has done reasonably well in some mineral commodities on world markets, but has lost ground in others. Any slackening of Canada's efforts in the development and marketing of mineral resources would soon lead to the decline of its role in the world miueral economy."

Copper, as far as we know, was the first metal used by man, and due to the fact that it occurs in many places in the 'native' state, and also to the ease with which it may be shaped, it has played an important part in the evolution of civilization. Copper tools with inscriptions dating back to 6,000 B.C. are known in Egypt, where the metal probably got its start as a useful material in human hands. Just how far back the use of copper in Canada dates is difficult to say, but it was in use by the Indians in the Lake Superior country long before the arrival of the first white man. For many generations the Eskimos also have used copper derived fr0m deposits of the native metal found in the Coronation Gulf district. Due to the metal's many unique qualities, imperishable with age, ancient implements and utensils are apparently as good today as when they were made, having withstood the onslaught of time probably better than objects of any of the other base metals. Copper alloys so well with other metals that today it is second only to iron in its industrial value. Even at the beginning of the eighteenth century the world's production of copper was probably not more than seven thousand tons a year, with Great Britain producing three-fourths of this. One hundred years ago the mines of the United States, Chili, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and Tasmania, which now produce about nine-tenths of the copper of the world, were totally undeveloped. Ln 1926 the world production of copper was approximately 1,658,000 tons, which was seventy thousand tons greater than in the preceding year; but growing demand absorbed the increased production, so that the stock of rough copper throughout the world is comparatively small. Of this huge tonnage of the metal, Canada produced four percent, two-thirds of it emanating from British Columbia, nearly one-third from the Province of Ontario, and the balance from Quebec.

Radar Technologies are successful implemented in the military industry since decades and recently found their way in the mining industry as level gauge radars for bin applications. The latest generation of microwave radar sensors are capable to provide geometrical data of the surrounding area of mining machines, too. Radar sensors are an improvement to laser scanners as they are more robust and able to penetrate dust and mist. Radar sensors will be the key source for operator assistance systems. indurad and RWTH Aachen University conducted a large series of tests at open pit mines and underground coal mines to determine the potential of the new two dimensional Dual Range Radar iDRR. Several applications were determined as highly feasible and are now completed respectively in the implementation stage. The authors are giving an insight in the experimental results, the implementation and an outlook of future applications for this technology.

"Noranda has successfully developed and implemented two leading-edge mineral exploration technologies — hyperspectral remote sensing and 3-D seismic surveying. Airborne hyperspectral imaging provides detailed geological and mineralogical mapping capability at both a regional and project scale that facilitates improved selection of prospective terrain and an accelerated exploration cycle. Noranda, in partnership with Falconbridge, has licensed the exclusive use of the Earth Search Sciences Inc. (ESSI) Probe-1 hyperspectral scanners (128- channel, 0.43 µm to 2.5 µm spectral range) that are capable of mapping in excess of 3500 km2 per day at 10 m pixel resolution. The technology has been successfully deployed on four continents over a broad range of terrain from desert to boreal forest and the high Arctic.To augment the company’s deep search initiatives, Noranda has successfully modified and implemented existing 3-D seismic technology to help targeting massive sulphides located at depths ranging from 500 m to 2000 m. In the fall of 1998 and early 1999, Noranda completed an 18 km2, 3-D seismic program in eastern Canada by successfully drill testing acoustic impedance anomalies locating massive sulphides at depths in excess of 1100 m."

ON THE 6TH JULY in the year 1953 an announcement was made to the public that touched off one of the greatest staking rushes in the history of mining in Canada and resulted, in tl1e space of a few short years, in the development of the greatest reserves of uranium-bearing ore in the world. It was ?On this date that the famous "Blind River back-door staking bee" was completed with the acquisition of some 2,000 claims by the Preston East Do me-Technical Mine Consultant teams under the direction of Mr. Franc Joubin and Mr. Robert C. Hart. That story has been told from coast to Coast and is too well known now to re-quire elaboration. Suffice to say that, in the short elapsed time of less tl1an five years from that momentous summer of 1953, three of the Algoma mines are in full production, three more are rapidly nearing full production, five more 1are approaching the production stage, a new hard-surfaced highway, 108, has been built to serve the area, and a brand new, completely planned city, Elliot Lake, is being built to provide the amenities of living to the 22,000 people already in the area.

Experience of the past few decades has shown that long-range predictions made be-fore engineering groups usually fall short of the mark; that is, the actual technical achievements in any period tend to surpass the boldest predictions that any responsible engineer would have made, say twenty years earlier.Instead, I will point out some recent accomplishments or refer to research that is in progress or now being planned in order to suggest important trends to be expected in the next few years. As exploration for new mineral deposits advances farther into the Canadian North, the more the design engineer is faced with the problems of cold weather conditions. This is especially true when designing belt conveyor systems for open-pit operations where the temperature in the winter may go to -40°F or below. Problems with the mechanical components and also with the belting will arise, which in turn may reduce the availability of the system. This paper outlines the problems encountered during cold weather operation and what precautionary measures must be taken into consideration in the design of equipment, as well as in the selection of materials, in order to ensure a system which will maintain production. THE conveying of ore and waste in the pit or to the processing plant poses problems during cold weather, when temperatures may drop to -4o?F or be-low. Troubles with the mechanical components, the belting or the supporting structure may arise, and this, in turn, will reduce the availability of the conveying system.

"The St. Lawrence Granite hosts vein-type fluorite mineralization that was mined until 1977. Recent drilling identified a significant fluorite-bearing structure hosted in adjacent meta-sedimentary country rocks. Several phases of vein fill and brecciation indicate there are three phases of fluorite mineralization, of which the later two phases are volumetrically significant. The earliest fluorite is purple and occurs along joint and fracture surfaces, in fault-breccia matrices, and as stockwork veins. The second phase comprises primarily red, yellow, blue-green, and white colours of fluorite. The latest phase is green with lesser clear fluorite. Identification of fluorite veins in the meta-sedimentary rocks opens up new areas for exploration.RÉSUMÉ Le granite St. Lawrence contient une minéralisation filonienne de fluorite, laquelle a été exploitée jusqu’en 1977. De récents forages ont permis d’identifier une structure importante contenant de la fluorite encaissée dans des roches métasédimentaires adjacentes. Les nombreuses phases de remplissage de filons et de formation de brèches indiquent qu’il y a eu trois phases de minéralisation de fluorite et les deux dernières sont importantes d’un point de vue volumétrique. La plus ancienne fluorite est mauve et se trouve le long de surfaces de joints et de fractures, dans les matrices de brèches de failles et en tant que stockwerks filoniens. La deuxième phase comprend surtout des fluorites de couleurs rouge, jaune, bleu-vert et blanc. La fluorite de la plus récente phase est verte avec des quantités moindres de fluorite claire. L’identification des filons de fluorite dans les roches métasédimentaires ouvre de nouveaux secteurs pour l’exploration."
