The South American mining community leads the world in recognition and adoption of the latest grinding mill relining technologies. Clearly this region has recognised the benefits of improved relining performance as a defence against the Global Economic Crisis. Five of the six RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining Systems, ordered to date, are either operating or being manufactured for South American mine sites. The sixth is for Sino IronÆs Cape Preston Project in Western Australia. This paradigm shift, towards very short relining times, aims at displacing mill relining activities from the critical path of concentrator maintenance shutdown schedules. The first uses of the RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining System have seen some of the highest semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill new liner placement rates ever observed by Russell Mineral Equipment (RME), as would be expected with two, independent Machines working simultaneously in the one mill. The liner replacement rate, averaged over the whole reline is good (27 per cent improvement over single Machine System in the same mill) but short of full potential. This modest result can be attributed to reline crews unfamiliarity with RUSSELL TWIN 8 System operation. This paper compares a sample of conventional (single machine) RME Mill Relining System performance data with one ædouble headÆ mill liner handler by others. Early performance of EscondidaÆs new RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance is then compared with recent single machine data from Escondida, immediately prior to RUSSELL TWIN 8 commissioning. RME and Escondida look to constantly improving RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance as full operational familiarity is achieved. The preparation of this paper revealed a need to develop a global industry standard for mill relining data collection. A web based platform to develop data collection templates is also discussed in Appendix 1.

Garden Well is a shear-hosted Archaean orogenic gold deposit located 100 km north of Laverton, Western Australia. The Garden Well processing plant is designed for a nominal 491 t/h milling rate and annual capacity of 4 Mt. The plant has three key innovations:1. a scrubbing circuit, expected to reduce grinding power consumption by up to 20 per cent2. a secondary cycloning/gravity circuit, providing a second opportunity for gravity gold recovery (additionally, the circuit effectively increases the leach residence time of the coarse gold bearing fraction of the leach feed by approximately 60 per cent, without any additional tankage)3. the use of mid-stream oxygenation to enhance gold recovery.The Garden Well deposit is free-milling with overall laboratory gravity/leach gold recoveries exceeding 95 per cent at a P80 grind size of 150 ¦m. Three mineralogical domains have been identified: oxide, transition and fresh, with the fresh domain having subdomains of fresh ultramafic and fresh shale. There is a high component of gravity recoverable gold in all three domains.This paper will discuss these innovations and the design challenges and the risk mitigation strategies that were adopted to ameliorate the prototyping risk. The MMG Century mine, which is the largest zinc/lead mine in Australia, began operating in 1999 and ceased mining from the open pit in July 2015, with processing completed in early 2016. Closure plans were developed from 2006, and detailed planning for closure commenced in early 2011 with the appointment of a dedicated closure planning resource. The site will continue to be managed during the active and passive closure phases to complete rehabilitation commitments and demonstrate that closure completion criteria have been achieved.Completion of the mining/processing phase of the project provides an opportunity to reflect on successes, missed opportunities and lessons learnt with respect to planning and execution of mine closure. This paper highlights examples of success at Century and also identifies key learnings and areas for improvement in progressive closure outcomes. Specific examples examine mine planning and execution involving bulk movement of waste rock and construction of permanent waste encapsulation landforms. The paper also provides recommendations for other sites that are planning for closure.Decisions made during the operational phase of the project life can result in a significant increase in closure liability and reduce the likelihood of achieving lease relinquishment. In 1993 a detailed review of drill sample yuuluy was rouxluard through twin and triplet drill holes using open hole, crossover suhreverse circulation (RC) and diamond drill methods. Advances in face-sampling RC methods demanded a further review of the validity and reproducibility of drill sample data. A program was undertaken to drill three RC holes using the latest technology (new face- sampling bits, dust suppressers, cyclones and compressors). Volumetric and mass studies were undertaken to review sample recoveries. Modal analyses on indicator minerals were logged to interpret the relative degree of mineralisation. Ambiguities in the results were immediately apparent and the consensus was for follow-up twin diamond holes using HQ3 coring tubes. The most mineralised RC hole was selected for the first twin diamond hole. This RC hole (MS 313) encountered one intersection of >0.47 g/t; in contrast the diamond hole (MS 342) had nine intersections at > I g/t. Results at hand show definitively that face-sampling RC drilling is not acceptable as a method of exploration for gold deposits of the Woods Point type. Furthermore it is demonstrated that RC drilling should not be used for any type of exploration of high-grade gold vein deposits related to highly fractured or porous hostrock, or areas of previous mining activity. Methods are proposed for reviewing of rates of sample recovery, distribution and cross-contamination. Comparisons also show that in limited metreage reconnaissance drill programs, diamond drilling is more similar to percussion in per metre costs, than it is credited with, and always provides more bang for the Buck.

Narrow reef gold deposits are generally less than 4 m in width and relatively complex geological phenomena. They often display variable geometry, attitude, continuity and internal architecture. Economic grades are mostly restricted to specific structural domain(s) and localised within discrete ore shoots that have a nuggety internal grade distribution. On account of the often extended history of geological events, the specific factors localising gold-rich domains are likely to be unique to a particular mine or even reef. These features lead to a high resource risk and require careful management during both evaluation and mining. The gross form, location and global continuity of gold reefs can generally be determined from surface diamond drilling leading to the definition of Inferred Mineral Resources. It is likely that for the definition of Indicated and Measured Mineral Resources underground development and/or close- spaced diamond drilling will be required. Understanding geometry and continuity permits the resource to be more effectively managed, lowering risk/uncertainty. This in turn will allow for well-informed financial and operational decisions. Most importantly, project expectations and milestones can be set at achievable levels.

Dr Wark said: I have not come to Broken Hill to tell you how to conduct flotation operations; indeed, during my short stay here I have already learned much concerning the process, of the many difficulties which have been overcome, and of those still awaiting solution. My purpose tonight is rather different. All who have been concerned with the operation of the flotation process must have wondered, like myself, why the process is possible at all. In particular, why can minerals which are heavier than water be made to l10at to its surface; why do certain minerals float while others do not; and what are the functions of the added chemicals?I have been asked to describe tonight some of the ways which have been adopted in the Melbourne University laboratory in an endeavour to find answers to these. questions. Knowing that you are just as interested in them as we are and, furthermore, appreciating that were it not for the co-operation of the Broken Hill companies our researches would not have been possible, I regard it as a high privilege that I should have been invited to tell you of our work. Before doing so, I would like to tell you the reasons why the work was started and for whom it has been carried out. Soon after the flotation process had been successfully exploited on a commercial scale a number of investigators sought to determine the theoretical basis upon which it rests, and our knowledge of the function of the added chemicals has been considerably broadened by the published accounts of many workers, particularly in recent years of those working in American universities.The Australian metallurgist played, as you know, a part second to none in the early development of the process, and Australia's mining fields had already reaped such rich rewards from it that, late in 1929, it was felt by some of the leaders of the industry that we should take a larger part in the efforts being made to extend the knowledge of the principles upon which the process is based.Accordingly, several companies - the Broken Hill South, the North Broken Hill, The Zinc Corporation, the Electrolytic Zinc and the Mount Lyell Companies - established a laboratory in the chemistry department of the University of Melbourne for the purpose of investigating the principles underlying flotation.Subsequently another British company, the Burma Corporation Ltd, expressed a desire to co-operate.

The operation of copper flotation circuit is a challenging task for the site metallurgists and plant operators. To optimise the performance requires meeting both grade and recovery objectives. These plants have numerous pieces of equipment that are monitored by hundreds of sensors. The challenge is to review these sensors and adjust the numerous control inputs to maintain peak operational efficiency for extended periods. There is also a need to respond to equipment failure. These challenges lead to in operational inefficiencies and can result in a reduction in revenue.This paper details an overview of an operational assistance tool implemented at Newcrest's Telfer plant’s copper flotation circuit. This tool is based on a digital twin of the plant. A digital twin is a model of the plant that is simulated in parallel to the normal plant operation. It is fed with the plant data in real time to provide a prediction of plant operation. The model outputs directly generate the metrics that are used to assess the plant performance, and these are compared with the metrics calculated from the actual plant’s operation. Deviations between the model estimate and the plant’s actual performance are used to gather insight into plant health and alert the operator to poor performance. The operators gather more information regarding the root cause by reviewing the model’s inputs that have deviated outside their normal operating range. An evaluation of the plant performance, following the commissioning of the digital twin, showed an overall reduction of acid soluble copper in the tails.This paper discusses the implementation of a digital twin of the plant to monitor plant performance during live operation. It will include details on data collection and cleansing, data reduction techniques, model development, and real-time implementation. Mining for sand was active in South Delhi during the last four decades disregarding all norms of safety. The aim of the paper is to highlight what is proposed to be done for mining in Delhi. Apart from the damage to the landscape, the earlier operations gave rise to visual pollution to the scenic Delhi area and there is immediate need of land restoration and landscaping. Future mining should be planned so that the resultant land surface completely merges with the topography and gradually assimilates with the green belt. Restoration of old workings, land reclamation and details of plantation in old pit areas are included. The project also provides a demon- stration site to show the impact of eco-development leading to new legisla- tive measures, as it is in the Capital of India itself and therefore more accessible than any other area. What has been suggested for mining is not the latest and the most modern equipments from the Western point of view but the right equipment to meet the specific requirement of the country. Financial projections are included alongwith technical details of the project to show the benefits to the society. It is concluded that eco-development is essential for the mining in the Twenty- First Century.

A recent survey of mineral processors undertaken as part of the International Mineral Processing Council (IMPC) Education Commission identified mineralogy as one of the key skills required for mineral processors (the other key areas being comminution, flotation, physical separation, sampling and extractive metallurgy). Past experience in a number of operations has shown what can be achieved when the data outputs from mineralogical tools are coupled with people with the right skills who can transform the data into actionable information. This paper reviews what has been done successfully in plant operations over a period of more than four decades and gives examples of a range of applications with both long and short-term objectives. The examples demonstrate the usefulness of mineralogical data – both basic and complex – in optimising mineral processing operations, whether the data are applied in a simple analysis or in more complex modelling. Similarly, the examples show the range of options available for operations to access the mineralogy information they need – through in-house experts and equipment based in centralised technology centres, through on-site equipment and experts or through external laboratories and consultants.The examples from industry highlight the huge potential benefit of including mineralogy as an integral part of operational best practice and raise the question of why more operations do not utilise what should be readily available data. Successful application of mineralogical data requires skilled people to generate relevant data of the required quality, together with skilled people to interpret the data (this may be the same person). And, as in any project, corporate recognition of the value of this approach to best practice is required to ensure continuing support. With fewer university courses providing courses in process mineralogy to undergraduate mineral processing engineers and chemical engineers, there is an increasing lack of knowledge about what mineralogical information is needed, how to get the required data and, equally importantly, how to turn the data into useful information.CITATION:Evans, C L and Wightman, E M, 2018. South Australia's economic development has relied heavily on the mineral industry. In the late 1840s the rich copper deposits at Kapunda and Burra saved the Colony's economy when South Australia became a world copper producer. Copper lodes developed at Moonta-Wallaroo during the 1860s brought further prosperity when mining activities at Kapunda and Burra were in decline. In addition to those large mines there were many smaller workings scattered through the Flinders and Mount Lofty Ranges producing copper, gold, silver, lead and zinc. Most of the mines of this period were worked by Cornish immigrants who brought their own technology and mining methods with them. These people have left a cultural legacy unique in Aus- tralia. In this Jubilee 150 year (1986) the Department of Mines and Energy, working in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Planning, is helping to preserve and interpret selected historic mining sites, most of which have been neglected since their closure. This work is designed to draw people's interest to mining history by providing interpreted sites for them to visit and to demon- strate the importance of the mining industry in South Australia's cultural and economic develop- Ment.

Although the mining of metals was well established by the time of the Roman Empire mining skills did not really advance greatly for many centuries. Miners did not have the scientific knowledge to distinguish minerals, to process them, and to obtain the best recovery. Each mine essentially developed its own methods in isolation, most of them dangerous. However, with the beginning of the industrial revolution in the early 18th century there was a rapid increase in mining activity in Central and Western Europe and an accompanying need to educate professionals in the developing fields of science and technology. There was also a need for specialised schools (for example, Schools of Mines) to accomplish this since the universities of the time, formed as early as the first half of the 12th century, were cloistered institutions, focused on the study of classics, theology and law. The earliest attempts at organised technical education were made in 1702 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Frieberg, Germany (Table 1) to service rich copper mines, and in 1747 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Paris. By this time, the industrial revolution was well under way and other Schools rapidly followed, at Clausthal in the Ruhr region of Germany in 1775; in 1777 at Almanden to service the mercury mines of Spain (later transferred to Madrid); in 1780 at St Petersburg, Russia and at Falun, Sweden in 1819. The academic staff for these new institutions were often trained in the original School at Frieberg.

This paper documents a process of data analytics and machine learning applied to coalmine roof convergence data. It follows a publication documenting the formation of the database. For each set of analyses Python scripts were utilised to extract data from an SQL database, with subsequent analyses also executed in Python, utilising open-source tools such as scikit-learn. Preliminary analyses with classic machine learning algorithms included multiple logistic regression, K-nearest neighbours, decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, kernel support vector machine, artificial neural network (ANN), naïve Bayes and multiple linear regression. Results indicated that relationships were complex and non-linear, with the artificial neural network most suitable. An ANN model was then refined through a standard process of hyperparameter optimisation and data augmentation to arrive at a final model. Due to the black box nature of the ANN further insight into how the parameters interacted was sought and found with Shapley additive explanations (SHAP values). SHAP values utilise Game Theory, where each input parameter or feature is a ‘player’ while the data set is the ‘team’. The SHAP value is the impact of each player on the target value, essentially establishing the contribution of each input parameter. The results from all analyses are delivered in the paper, together with insights, applications, strengths, and limitations of the methodology.

The precise measurement of NO2 was historically difficult in road tunnels, hence criteria and design analysis was based on converting from NOx concentrations via a set NO2:NOx ratio. The reliable direct measurement of NO2 is now possible, however design analysis is still dominated by emissions tables and formulas specified in terms of NOx. For converting from NOx to NO2 in a road tunnel environment in Australia, the ratio has typically been assumed to be ten?per?cent. This has generally been based on the recommendation in PIARC (2000) and on the ‘average’ value cited in PIARC (1995).Determining this ratio is important as changes in engine technology and in-tunnel pollution criteria along with improvements in CO and particulate emissions control, may mean that NO2 will become the driving factor for future ventilation requirements. Correct selection of this ratio can directly impact the ventilation capacity and system design.Recent research has indicated that choosing a constant ratio of ten?per?cent for all tunnels may not be appropriate. The in-tunnel ratio has been estimated to be as much as 20?per?cent to 30?per?cent and depends on the location in the tunnel, the type of ventilation system and the traffic/fleet characteristics. This paper discusses the effect of some of these parameters on the NO2:NOx ratio in road tunnels.The findings indicate that the ten?per?cent upper limit on the NO2:NOx ratio in PIARC (2000) may be a conservative value for design purposes for longitudinally ventilated road tunnels of typical length in Australia. A value of seven?per?cent to eight?per?cent may be more appropriate in some circumstances. However, the value chosen will depend on the specific tunnel in question and the confidence in traffic conditions expected. The construction of mine headframes of reinforced concrete is not a new departure as many structures have been built of this, material particularly in Canada and South Africa. This type of construction has been satisfactorily tested in service and is now accepted by the mining fraternity.The two headframes at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited are the first structures of this type to be built in Australia, and provide an interesting application of reinforced concrete design and construction.Reasons for Adoption of ConcreteDuring 1947 the writer visited D.S.A. and Canada and inspected three headframes, of reinforced concrete construction.Leading details are as follows:(i) Hollinger Gold Mines. (Timmins, Ontario) : Height of sheaves 110 ft. Shaft has provision for 4 skips each of 12,000 lb. capacity. Structure incorporates surface crushing plant.(ii) International Nickel Corporation-Murray Shaft (Sudbury): Height to sheaves 153 ft. 6 in. Shaft provides for 2-12 ton skips and 2 cages. Surface crushing plant built integrally with frame.(iii) Asbestos-Johns Manviae (Quebec): Height of sheaves 116 ft. Shaft provides for 2 skips 200 cu. ft.

"Minerals, minerals, minerals. Elements occur in the earth as minerals. If local physical, chemical and structural conditions are conducive to concentrating these minerals to sufficiently high abundances in the earth’s crust, a mineral deposit will form. If technology is available to extract metals from the minerals economically, then you have a mineral resource that will be mined and processed. Determining which minerals are present and quantifying their abundances, textural characteristics (grain size and shape) and how they are intergrown with each other is the realm of the mineralogist. Geologists use this mineralogical data to understand how the mineral deposit formed, how to find high-grade zones within the deposit and where to find other mineral deposits. Metallurgists use this data to design, operate and optimise processing facilities to extract metals from the minerals. The types, quantity and precision/resolution of the mineralogical data required by geologists and metallurgists are different, but are not mutually exclusive of each other. The mine is currently nearly 5 km long, more than 2 km wide at the operating face and up to 200 m deep. AGL employs a large workforce at Loy Yang and a substantial amount of services are performed on-site by contractors and consultants.GHD provides mine planning, earth sciences, civil/geotechnical engineering, dam surveillance, plant engineering and environmental services to AGL Loy Yang through an alliance framework. GHD is one of the world’s leading professional services companies operating in the global markets of water; energy and resources; environment; property and buildings; and transportation. In addition to GHD’s global footprint, the company also has a significant Victorian presence, including a permanent, well-resourced regional office in Traralgon, approximately 10 km from Loy Yang, as well as a permanent site office.A joint paper on the Loy Yang mine professional services alliance model was written for the AusIMM International Mine Management Conference in 2006 by Woods and Wood. Now ten years on, this paper provides an overview of the present relationship and arrangements, including the continued transformation of the alliance model and maturing of the relationship contract.These are challenging times, with increasing cost and regulatory pressure driving change in the broader energy and resources industry, and locally including both the mining and power sectors at Loy Yang. Flexible models to achieve a balance between internal personnel and access to key external skills, whilst achieving value for money and transparency, is increasingly critical. The right drivers and performance measures are essential, particularly when confronted with potential major technical and environmental risks (considering significant ground failure and fire events that have occurred elsewhere within the Latrobe Valley over the last decade) within a sector that is reducing costs and optimising production.This case study discusses the alliance status and changes, reasons behind adjustments and what the future is likely to hold. The paper also explores the validity of the original objectives and the extent to which they have been achieved. The philosophy of the alliance is to continue closely aligning the objectives of the two companies in the best interests of the Loy Yang site and immediate surrounds/stakeholders. PART 1The quantity of dust present and the methods used for suppression of dust in metalliferous mines has, in recent years, received considerable attention from mining engmeers in various parts of the world. Shortly after the publication of the General Report of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee, South Africa, in 1916, the officers of the Broken Hill South Limited started investigations into the conditions of the dustiness of the air in the underground workings. As the methods used are not generally known in Australia, the writers are of the opinion that the present is an opportune time to place them before members of the Institute. A large amount of the subject matter of this paper has been drawn from the 1916 and 1919 reports of the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee, South Africa, the paper of Mr. Innes published in "The Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Mrica"; also various articles appearing in the Journal of Industrial Hygiene, and the American Journal of Public Health. A great deal of research work into the cause, prevention and estimation of mine dust has been made by the Miners' Phthisis Prevention Committee of South Africa, and officials of the United States Bureau of Mines. The writers considered it advisable to begin the investigation at the South Mine with apparatus and methods developed by the South African Committee.Through the Australian agent of the Cape Explosives Company, inquiries were made preliminary to procuring the necessary apparatus for the determination of dust, from South Africa. Fe-26Si-9B (wt per cent) alloy has been identified as a potential high-temperature phase change material (PCM) due to its attractive properties, such as its high latent heat of fusion and low volumetric change during solid/liquid transition. For the successful utilisation of this alloy into thermal energy storage (TES) systems, the development of a cost-effective production method is essential. Presently, the Fe-26Si-9B alloy is produced by mixing FeSi alloys with either pure boron element or FeB alloys. However, the use of pure boron is financially prohibitive, and the carbothermic reduction results in high greenhouse gas emissions and high energy consumption in the production of FeB alloys. In this regard, our study proposes a silicothermic reduction method to produce Fe-26Si-9B PCM by using FeSi alloys and B2O3-based oxides. Accordingly, the influence of various parameters on the production process was investigated, including operating temperature, holding time, B2O3 content in the added oxides, and initial Slag/Metal (S/M) ratio. Based on the experimental results, the optimal parameters for producing FeSiB alloys with over 9 wt per cent boron were determined. Consequently, it was documented that the FeSi alloys and the added oxides enriched with 50– 65 wt per cent B2O3 should be subjected to temperatures ranging from 1550–1650°C, maintain an initial S/M ratio exceeding 1, and ensure a holding duration beyond 1 hr. Moreover, the energy consumption of this process was estimated to be ~1.86 MWh/t metal and the mass loss was lower than 7 per cent. Therefore, silicothermic reduction offers a sustainable approach for producing FeSiB alloys with a boron content above 9 wt per cent.

The Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s long-planned Western Ring Route, a 48 km north-south motorway alternative to State Highway 1 that bypasses the central city to the west. The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway – half of it underground in tunnels – to connect the Southwestern (State Highway 20) and Northwestern (State Highway 16) motorways.The Western Ring Route will link the major population and industrial centres of Manukau, Auckland and North Shore to give the region the connected and resilient strategic road transport system it needs to underpin economic growth and sustainable development. It will also provide a direct motorway link between Auckland’s central business district (CBD) and international airport.The project involves construction of twin 2.4 km driven tunnels with an outside diameter of 14.41 m beneath residential suburbs, a major arterial road and a rail corridor. Enabling works began in January 2012 while tunnel construction using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) began in November 2013.This presentation introduces the Waterview Connection project, its role in the development of the Auckland motorway network, its procurement process, the alliance delivery model and an overview of the project’s design features and construction progress to date.Design and construction highlights of the presentation include the TBM start-up, turnaround and breakthrough arrangements as well as the experience gained during the first tunnelling drive. At 14 per cent, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada. Despite an increase in research and industry commitment to advance and retain women in the mining industry, the gender gap in mining organisations persists.This paper is based upon a recent Canadian survey of 163 highly qualified women (HQW) working in the mining sector. For the purpose of this research, HQW were defined as women with a BachelorÆs degree or higher. This research sought to identify career progression and retention patterns of women who in theory have the educational qualifications to advance into positions of leadership in mining operations. We considered why womenÆs advancement in mining organisations has stalled; examined the career development pathways of HQW; and investigated the interactions of mining workplace culture on HQWÆs career development and retention within the Canadian mining industry. Results?indicated two distinct career pathway trends for HQW. æThe specialistÆ; a career characterised by multiple professional scientific and technical positions, and æthe corporateÆ; a career characterised by professional administrative roles and roles in mid-level management. It was found that neither æcorporatesÆ nor æspecialistsÆ systematically progressed into senior management and executive roles. These findings suggest that HQWÆs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to?workplace?culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrim-ination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Consistent with previous mining sector research, improving work-life balance, work flexibility and mentorship were found as key drivers for HQW to advance and remain in the industry.CITATION:Hughes, C, Scoble, M and Roberts, M, 2012.
