Deposits of low-grade iron ores containing abundant goethite are distributed across the world. A common difficulty associated with beneficiating goethitic-rich ores is the poor liberation characteristics of the iron-bearing minerals which often contain finely disseminated gangue minerals such as kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. Microwave-assisted heating has been proposed as an effective way of inducing dehydroxylation and associated mineral transformations in order to beneficiate low-grade goethitic ores. In this research, the mineral transformations occurring in a low-grade goethite-rich sample using microwave radiation was studied. Roasting conditions (up to 1000°C and under various CO/CO2 gas atmospheres) were designed to generate a magnetic product from a goethite-rich, reject waste stream sample sourced from an iron ore processing site in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Conditions (T, pO2) for transforming the raw material from hydrated goethite to hematite and eventually to magnetite are presented. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the raw material and roast products were conducted using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques to identify the mineralogical and chemical changes occurring during the heat treatment. Further steps are suggested to optimise the microwave-assisted magnetising roasting and correlate it with the application of magnetic separation techniques to maximise the efficiency of upgrading the iron content in low-grade iron ores.CITATION:Nunna, V, Hapugoda, S and Pownceby, M I, 2017. The objective of this paper is to examine some modern forms of auxiliary ventilation fabric ducting with streamline design fittings and the efficiency of construction practices. The most dynamic form of auxiliary ventilation is a moveable fan and ducting, which is easy to install and uses light weight fabric. The porous nature of some ducting construction results in leakage and loss of efficiency. Flexible fabric ducting is primarily associated with metalliferous mining and industrial material quarrying. Some applications are found in coal in stone/rock development and with use of dust scrubbers.Forcing auxiliary ventilation systems employing circular fabric ducting have been examined. Leakage of air from ducting is affected by ducting material and construction methodology (such as welded or sewn), quality of installation, number of joints, total length, pressure differences between the inside and outside and diameter. The best ducting system with welded construction can have up to four times less leakage as compared with some systems with sewn construction. It is also evident that the sewn type ducting will deliver less air to working faces and require more fan power, hence higher operating costs to run when connected to the same fan.A case study has also been undertaken to compare predicted operating costs of auxiliary ventilation systems connecting various types of ventilation duct fittings. The study also assesses the technical importance of streamline design with low aerodynamic resistance to reduce the shock losses of the duct fittings. It was found that the system connected with streamline designed fittings is able to provide some power cost savings and deliver more air compared with the system fitted with conventional fitting pieces.Using a ventilation ducting system with a lower leakage and frictional characteristic represents a sound solution to new challenges faced by the industry for increasing demand for better quantities and quality of air delivered to working faces; this is due to higher production schedules and stricter mine health and safety regulations within the Australian mining industry.CITATION:Wu, H W and Gillies, A D S, 2017. A Loss of Strength of Gold Sulfide Concentrate Before Grinding and Cyanidation Using Magnetic Impulse Treatment Gold recovery from sulfide concentrates is going with cyanidation usually. The fine grinding to 95 per cent -0.020 mm is required for refractory concentrates, in which gold encapsulated by sulfides. According energy consumption is 10 and more kW h/ton. At this paper we suggested to use magnetic-impulse treatment with small energy consumption 0.1-0.2 kW h/ton for loss of sulfide strength before grinding and cyanidation. The object of studies was the gold-pyrite flotation concentrate which was produced from ores at the Kumtor Mine, Kyrgyzstan. The concentrate composition, physic-mechanical properties and loss of strength mechanism were studied there. The tested concentrate assayed, per cent: 62.5 pyrite, 10 feldspar, 10 mica, 5 quarts, 5 carbonates, 4 haematite and another. Haematite has intimate intergrowth with pyrite ? partially with quarts. The magnetic susceptibility of haematite and less pyrite causes in these grains and mineral complex the effect of magneticstriction. As a result numbers of deformations are increased and minerals and gold are also exposed. Lateral and longitudinal strains in the minerals by magneticstriction were calculated in this work. By quantitative analysis of pyrite mono fractions were showed next micro impurities: alumina, arsenic, nickel and others elements. These micro impurities are generated a charged dislocation, cracks and micro cracks. The inter-granular links at a boundary of haematite-pyrite, pyrite-quarts, haematite-quarts have disintegrated. The dislocation is depended from mineral modulus elasticity. It was determined an indicator of mineral electro-mechanic sensitivity which characterises a conversion of electro-magnetic energy to mechanic energy. Pyrite has most dielectric constant and electro-mechanic sensitivity as haematite and quarts. The dislocations in pyrite are account for clacks and a loss of mineral strength. Size analysis of the flotation concentrate after magnetic-impulse treatment is shown the increasing the content of thin fractions by comparison no treated concentrate. Magnetic-impulse treatment has increased the effect of the next fine grinding too. The electronic microscopy has confirmed a loss of strength of gold sulfide concentrate. The gold recovery by cyanidation increased too after preliminary magnetic-impulse treatment of concentrate by laboratory tests. The magnetic-impulse concentrate studies at the Kumtor plant have showed that a recovery gold increase in the processing of cyanidation. The consumption of energy also reduced.

The AusIMM is concerned about the longer tem sustainability of the minerals sector in Australasia. Our contention is that the sustainability of the sector is at risk if we do not:   ò encourage more exploration in Australasia by removing impediments and         increasing incentives; ò fund our university and research centres appropriately to increase both our   prospectivity, and our processing efficiencies; and ò manage our human resources better.   This paper will focus on how we can better manage our human resources to assist in ensuring sustainability of the sector in Australasia .   From a production point of view:   Economic output = f (Land, Labour, Capital, Environment) where Land refers to all of the natural resources used in production. As well as land itself it includes water, forest, fisheries, oil, gas and mineral deposits. Labour refers to the skills and capabilities used by humans in the production process. Capital describes all of the manufactured aids used in the process of production1. The challenge for management is to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of labour in the production process whilst maintaining sustainable development.   The 1992 Rio Summit defined sustainable development as maintaining and enhancing:   ò natural capital û defined as all natural resources, both environmental and   those of traditional economic value; ò manufactured capital û made by human kind, including produced goods,     infrastructure and built environment; ò human capital û defined as the health, well being, intellectual capabilities and   spiritual welfare of individuals; and ò social capital û defined as social relations and consultations within and   between societies, their norms and functionality2.   The minerals sector in Australasia has successfully focused on the technical aspects of each of these components of sustainable development with primary attention applied to natural capital and efficient utilisation of manufactured capital. The technical aspects of human capital and social have also been addressed through an emphasis on occupational health and safety and interaction with local communities however I suggest that, to date, insufficient emphasis has been placed on labour (human capital) to maximise economic output1.   It has become increasingly common practice to identify land as natural capital, labour as human capital and capital as physical capital. That is labour has been treated as a commodity rather than an opportunity to create a comparative advantage and this will be the greatest challenge for mine management to show leadership over the next decade of the 21st Century.   This paper will outline characteristics of the sector which are relevant to the management and utilisation of labour, outline the outcomes of recent AusIMM surveys, review the reasons for the current and future anticipated skills shortages, some innovative responses to the challenges and finally, suggestions on how mine management can show leadership.

Though many mining and mineral processing companies have embraced the principles of sustainable development (SD), there is still a significant challenge of applying these in a practical sense, either in plant design or as part of day-to-day operations. The high-level nature of sustainability concepts often do not translate easily into workable activities or business case evaluations. This makes it difficult for engineers and company decision makers to understand whether their actions are making a contribution to sustainable development and a long-term business case. While several organisations have their own SD tools that can, to a degree, help identify these opportunities, they are largely ad-hoc and lack the necessary thoroughness to defensibly value these opportunities. Recognising these serious shortcomings, the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) has undertaken the development and trial applications of SUSOP« (SUStainable OPerations), a new concept that is somewhat analogous to HAZOP and the wider risk and safety frameworks used in projects today. The key goal of the SUSOP« research project is to produce a holistic, systematic and rigorous framework for project development, capturing, recording and evaluating SD opportunities and constraints against a chosen sustainability structure (eg Five Capitals). SUSOP« is being developed through an iterative process with input from research institutions and engineering companies. This integrated approach ensures that SUSOP«, in its final form, will have the academic rigour and industry realism required to assist the resource sector contribute to societal sustainability by embedding the concepts and processes into the design and operation of their assets in a meaningful and practical manner. SUSOP« has created much traction with both engineering companies and mining and minerals operators. This conference paper presents an overview of the SUSOP« framework and its current suite of processes as well as highlighting, through practical case studies, its capability to incorporate SD considerations at different phases of an engineering project's development.

Ledcap Pty Ltd has developed two software tools for assisting in the determination of life-of-mine (LOM) trucking requirements. The first tool generates haul paths and the second calculates truck travel time over these paths. The two step approach allows the paths to be viewed and if required edited, to better represent the actual site haul routes.The first tool automatically creates haul paths between the mine bench and the dump. To do this the user supplies a master haul route and a scheduled block model. The master haul path and the block model are interacted to create multiple haul routes, one for each pit/dump bench pair in each scheduling period. Each path carries with it a record of the scheduling period it represents and the dry tonnage hauled over the path in that period.The second tool calculates truck travel time over the path. Data from the manufacturer's rimpull and retarder curves are used to calculate accelerations and speed over each segment of the haul path. As the paths are derived from digitised representations of mine haul routes the path f les often have over a hundred segments. This detailed representation of the haul route allows the software to automatically adjust speed for different radius corners and accurately simulates the changing accelerations over the gradient changes that occur in real life mine ramps. Rolling resistance can be specified at a global level, at a segment level and at a period level. This allows rolling resistance to be changed seasonally as well as spatially.Life-of-mine trucking studies attempt to calculate an accurate answer from extremely variable inputs. This paper will detail the features of the two software tools and how the tools provided in the software can assist the mine planner to have greater confidence in their life-of-mine trucking requirements and the subsequent production capacity inputs to their scheduling calculations.

Gold mining in Australia and globally has a long and variable history. In recent years, due to ongoing public concern over long-term environmental impacts, the mining industry globally has been moving towards a more sustainable framework, presented as the æMining, Minerals and Sustainable DevelopmentÆ (MMSD) framework at the Johannesburg Earth Summit in 2002. There are a number of fundamental issues and concerns with assessing the sustainability of mining. Firstly, long-term trends show that ore grades for almost all metals and minerals will continue to decline (some rapidly so), increasing waste rock is being produced due to the trend towards large-scale open cut mining and more complex ores are now commonly being developed. The impact of these trends on the resource intensity, or unit cost, of gold production is of major concern as it could lead to an increase in energy, water and reagent consumption and greenhouse emissions per unit gold produced. A detailed compilation of these fundamental sustainability indices for gold mining has been undertaken, and is presented with respect to indices over time, ore grade and ore throughput. A clear observation is that the resource intensity of gold mining is extremely sensitive to the ore grade, with energy, water and cyanide consumption and greenhouse emissions rising significantly as ore grade decreases. Based on the gold ore resources at operating mines and other known gold deposits, it is most likely that the average gold ore grade will continue to decline, leading to increased resource intensity and consequent environmental impacts (assuming no breakthrough new technologies occur). These findings are of major importance to understanding the sustainability of gold mining. The final judgement of the sustainability of gold mining therefore must take into account the sensitivity of the ore grade in the resource intensity of gold production.

The International Symposium-cum-Workshop on Management andControl of High Gas Emissions and Outbursts in Underground CoalMines was held in Wollongong in March 1995. Coverage of high gasemissions was virtually confined to instantaneous outburst implications, essentially seam gas pre-drainage. Globally, instantaneous outbursts have been known for 150 years, andthe first Australian outburst occurred in 1895 and Australian occurrences and mines affected have increased since. Few significant coal producing countries are unaffected. The coals affected range in rank from lignites to anthracites. Geological disturbances are the most likely environments for occurrences. The most likely mining geometry is of virgin headings, with some occurrences on longwalls and in other situations. Widespread research into many aspects of the problem has yet to produce a generally accepted explanation. Explosive inducement is a well-known control. Apparently high advance rates increase face gassiness and create higher stress abutments, increasing proneness. The most popular preventive measure, pre-drainage of virgin coal ahead of faces has produced highly successful very long hole drilling performances but without the precision necessary for accurate geometric hole patterns, despite quite sophisticated drilling equipment and hole surveying instruments. For the future, more precise degasification is sought, even from the surface, together with rapid face coal gassiness assessments to confirm lowering below threshold values, as well as other proneness lowering measures, perhaps related to new heading and longwall geometries and to new equipment to provide them. But above all, safe management plans are required for each operation, to safeguard the miners and their working environments, and thus to protect underground coal mining from this mounting threatening problem.

The use of scrapers in mining and earthmoving operations is not new, in fact they are one of the earliest methods of bulk earthmoving. A single machine which can load, haul, and dump material with a minimum of ancilliary support is a highly productive and cost-efficient method of earthmoving. In recent times scrapers have been unpopular due to perceived problems and operational limitations, but the last couple of years have seen a resurgence in the use of scrapers in the Bowen Basin as a primary prestripping tool. The main operational limitation of scrapers is the economic operating range. maximum productivity and lowest cost per bcm is achieved on short leads, as the lead distance increases the cost per bcm quickly reaches and then overtakes that of an truck-excavator fleet. The geometry of a ætraditionalÆ coal mine does not readily allow short leads for prestrip fleets due to the nature of dragline stripping operations. The strip arrangement means that material has to be taken around the end of the pit, meaning a longer haul distance than the actual point-to-point distance between load and dump. This can be alleviated by using pit bridges, however these can cause spoil problems for draglines if not properly planned and have been avoided by many mines. Due to the economic haul distance limitation of scrapers, truck-excavator fleets have become the normal method utilised. Currently more geologically complex mines are opening up, which do not allow traditional down-dip strip mining to occur. Cross-dip mining methods allow for short leads between prestrip loading and dumping areas, hence scrapers and bulk doze are realistic alternatives to a truck-excavator fleet in the prestrip environment. Keeping the lead distance to a minimum a fleet of 657Æs can move material at a very low cost. The other main operational limitation of scrapers is the type of material that can be economically excavated. Hard material can lead to damage to the bowl, free-flowing sand will not readily stay in the bowl leading to reduced load factors. Ripping the material with a dozer prior to excavating can lead to improved loading time, and greatly reduced GET consumption. When considering scrapers for prestrip operations a number of things must be considered: is the lead distance within the economic haul distance? should twin power (push-pull) or single power (dozer pushed) scrapers be used? do I need to rip, what should I rip with? what ancilliary support is required? is there another system already available on-site which is currently under utilised? This paper considers the parameters under which large twin power scrapers are the most effective way of undertaking prestrip operations.

Land disturbed by alluvial gold mining should be restored to a capability or productivity as good as that which existed prior to disturbance.   Effective rehabilitation requires detailed planning prior to mining and must also be closely integrated with the mining operations.   The main constituents of a rehabilitation plan: description of existing site conditions, choice of final land use, establishment of final landform, water management and erosion control, soil reconstruction, revegetation and management of rehabilitated land are briefly described.

Alteration and mineralisation at the Island Copper deposit is related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic quartz feldspar porphyry dykes into surrounding comagmatic Bonanza volcanic rocks. The pyrophyilite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that cross-cuts the Co, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid-mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.

Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

The Mt Wright Project is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Underground Development of the current Mt Wright orebody commenced in June 2006 and the first production ore was brought to surface in June 2007. The orebody is a rhyolite pipe containing fine-grained disseminated gold in a granite host rock. Ground conditions tend to be good to excellent throughout development, with some minor deformation experienced when stope-sized excavations are formed. The mine commenced as a sublevel open stoping (SLOS) operation with the intent to utilise development waste to back fill isolated upper level stopes while developing to the bottom of the known orebody. The mine plan intended to commence production with a bottom-up primary/secondary stoping retreat through the main orebody utilising cemented fill. Some challenges were faced during the initial production phase that included:•Ongoing underground diamond drilling and updating of the block model resulted in some issues reconciling the grade control results to the resource model. This was primarily due to the high variability of grade which in turn caused difficulties in accurately identifying areas of low and high-grade.•The cost of establishing and operating a cemented fill plant to achieve the planned extraction sequence of the orebody had increased significantly beyond initial estimations.•Geotechnical conditions such as stress orientations, ground behavior and response to the forming of excavations learned through the mining of the upper level stopes were different to the assumptions made during the initial design.A number of in-house and external reviews of the mining method were completed which has resulted in a revised mining plan. This paper will summarise the challenges faced and the implementation of the mine plan to date.

A model has been developed as part of the AMIRA P420 Gold Processing Technology Project to simulate the recovery of gold by centrifugal gravity devices. The model (which is available online) uses the simulation methodology developed by Laplante et al (1995) to predict gravity recoverable gold (GRG) recovery under varying operating conditions and circuit configurations. In addition to predicting GRG recovery, the model also predicts the GRG content and size distribution of the cyclone overflow and underflow. The predicted overflow GRG content and size distribution can be used as inputs for a leaching model in which size dependent leaching rates are applied for each size class of GRG and non-gravity recoverable gold (non-GRG) in the cyclone overflow, allowing size-by-size leach recoveries to be determined for GRG and non-GRG. The application of the gravity model and leaching model are demonstrated using a case study. The simulated gravity recovery and leaching performance showed excellent agreement with the measured values. The developed models can be used to assess the sensitivity of gravity gold and leach recoveries to varying feed GRG content, GRG size distribution, gravity circuit feed rate, classifier performance and leach residence time. The described methods can be used to optimise new and existing gravity and leaching circuits.

Due to the international depletion of reserves of traditional high-grade iron ore, the ore resources available throughout the world, especially in steel mills in East Asia, have changed drastically from hard hematitic to more goethitic ore types, such as pisolitic and Marra Mamba ores. The level of impurities and loss on ignition in iron ore has also been slowly increasing. Finally, the proportion of fine material in the available products has increased considerably for most iron ore fines. This has been found to have significant impacts on sinter quality and sintering performance. Magnetite concentrate is typically high in Fe grade and releases extra heat when oxidised to hematite. The amount of magnetite concentrates is expected to increase due to the recent development of a number of magnetite projects. Some of these magnetite concentrates will end in sinter blends. This will not only improve the sinter quality and but also have a beneficial impact on the fuel consumption of the sintering process. However, most of the concentrates available are very fine, which will negatively impact the green bed permeability and consequently the productivity of the sintering process. The lignite resource in the southern part of the South Island is New ZealandÆs largest source of indigenous primary energy. The ten deposits evaluated by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB) have a total recoverable reserve of 6.2 billion tones equivalent to 74 000 PJ of energy or 20 times the original energy content of the Maui gas field. Updating the economics of the original LFTB studies indicates that lignite could be mined for between NZ$1.0 and 3.0/GJ. Its conversion to synthesis gas for production of petroleum products, chemical methanol, ammonia/urea fertiliser or electricity would be in the national benefit and likely to be commercially economic at todayÆs product prices.

In this paper, we developed and implemented a fuzzy logic expert system capable of evaluating the degree of sustainability within the context of gold mining operations. The newly introduced approach of evaluating sustainability in the gold mining industry has the merit of sufficiently handling diverse, sustainable, development-related qualitative and quantitative data owing to fuzzy logic technology capabilities in dealing with linguistic syntax. The economic, environmental and social indicator inputs were independently evaluated and then combined with the aid of fuzzy logic to provide an overall sustainability index on a scale of zero to one. A total of 66 independent indicators were identified and applied in our model. The novelty of this work lies in providing a coherent numerical and automated approach in evaluating sustainability in the context of gold mining operations. In addition, the model can aid policy- and decision-makers in arriving at consistent decisions regarding the degree of sustainability on various aspects of gold mining operations. The functionality of this model will be illustrated through several examples.
