THE oil-bearing districts of Poland are found on the slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. The oil belt extends from Gorlice southeast to Stanislawow. It is approximately 250 miles long and 30 miles wide, and comprises four geological districts: the western, or Gorlice district; next, to the east, the Krosno district; the Boryslaw district; and, in the extreme southeast, the Stanislawow district. The amount of petroleum produced in Poland from the beginning of the oil industry scarcely totals 26,000,000 metric tons, or 15 per cent. of the estimated supply. Of this amount, 18,000,000 tons have been taken from the fields of Boryslaw within 25 years; and only about 8,000,000 tons from all other fields within a period twice as long, although some of these other fields represent just as good possibilities as did Boryslaw at the beginning of its development. The Polish oil industry was severely stricken by the war. The retreating Russian armies, in 1915, destroyed a large number, of the existing oil wells, nor was the post-war period favorable for the development of this industry;; the money and credit stringency interfered with the expansion of drilling. But since 1921 there has. been a slow steady increase in production and there is now every reason to believe that conditions in the industry will improve. In fact, an increase in new drillings has been reported for the current year. The production of crude oil in Poland, in 1913, amounted to 1,113,668 metric tons. In 1914, the production declined- to 655,600 metric tons. In 1921, the production was 705,596 tons; in 1922, 712,428 tons, and in 1923, 737,182 tons; or more than 5,000,000 bbl. But the fields have a much greater potential output, which could be realized were the capital available for prospecting and new drilling. The principal producing, and at present most exploited, fields are around Boryslaw and Schodnica. These fields were developed rapidly for in the first year of their modern exploitation the wells were gushers of moderate depth. However, as a result of heavy drilling, the shallow folds have been exhausted and oil can be reached now only by deep drilling. Wells of almost 5600 ft. have been drilled in Boryslaw. Because of these drilling conditions, a large number of engineers and workmen specially skilled in deep drilling are to be found in this field.

The Field Meeting of the Chicago Section proved to be the most enjoyable meeting ever held by the Section. It took the form of a visit to the Northern Indiana Industrial District where the day was spent inspecting metallurgical plants in Indiana Harbor and East Chicago and in amusement at the Hammond Country Club. The weather was perfect and about 50 members and ladies attended the meeting. An inspection of the plant of the Inland Steel Co. occupied the morning. The plant was decorated in honor of the occasion and the company provided attractive souvenirs. It was noticed here that many of the ladies displayed an interest in the inspection and an understanding of the processes that would not have shamed professional metallurgists. While the members of the Section seemed to be most interested in the by-product coke ovens and the by-product recovery plant, the ladies enjoyed especially watching the snake-like antics of the red-hot rods in the wire mill. Leaving the steel plant, the Section enjoyed a ride through the district by automobile and arrived at the Hammond Country Club in time for lunch. In the afternoon some of the members inspected the plant of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, while the rest spent the time at the Country Club in golf, tennis, trap shooting, bridge and other amusements. During the dinner at the Hammond Country Club an informally organized male quartette led the singing in real college boy style. In the evening, E. E. Billow talked on the use of oil burners in metallurgical furnaces, Mr. MacDowell told of the present status of the Potash Industry and the Secretary told of some of the happenings at the Arizona Meeting. Early this year at the University of Arizona in Tucson, a survey was made of student opinion about the minerals industry. Over 100 of the three page questionnaires were completed and these were analyzed by the following categories: 40 Mining Engineering students, 20 Geological Engineering with 2 Geophysical Engineering students, 15 Geology students, 7 Metallurgical Engineering, 26 Underclassmen, 29 Graduate students and a composite of 84 total students. Not all of the results of the survey were predictable. After graduation there is a strong preference toward going to work in the mineral industries. The next most popular options, but trailing the first choice greatly, was graduate work or employment in another industry. A smattering of other choices were for teaching, government or research. None checked the box for drop out.

STRETCHING from New York southwestwardly to Georgia is a great range of hills and mountains consisting of pre-Palaeozic schists, slates, and gneissic and granitoid rocks, known locally by many different names; in Pennsylvaniaa as the South mountains, the Berkshire or Durham and Reading hills, and in Virginia and farther south as the Blue ridge. To the northwest of this range lies the " Great Valley," underlain by Lower Silurian limestones, and known as the Lehigh valley, Cumberland valley, Shenandoah valley, valley of Eastern Tennessee and Georgia and by other local names, but all these are parts of one valley, geologically and geographically continuous from New Jersey to Georgia. Lying upon and along the northern flank of this range of mountains, and dipping northwestwardly under the limestone of the valley, is the Potsdam formation (Primal or No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey), which consists of sandstone or conglomerate overlain by slates. The latter are sometimes arenaceous and occasionally are replaced in part by sandstone. This formation varies from a few feet to several hundred feet in thickness. At the outcrop the slates are completely decomposed, oxidized or disintegrated, forming a belt of clay several hundred feet wide occupying the interval between the outcroppings of the sandstone and limestone. This clay-belt includes a more or less continuous series of iron-ore (brown hematite) deposits, which have been, and still are, extensively worked. The belt is more or less continuously mineralized with iron throughout its length, and hundreds of large deposits of ore have been developed and worked, producing many millions of tons of ore.

THE war is now behind us. We in the mining industry feel a just pride in the part that our industry and our men and our products played in defeating the enemy on the fighting fronts around the world. In five years of mobilization and actual combat, our mines and oil wells produced over 3 billion tons of coal, a billion tons of petroleum, 500 million tons of iron ore, 21/4 million tons of lead, 31/2 million tons of zinc, 5 million tons of copper, 14 million tons of bauxite, 17 million tons of sulphur, 68 million tons of salt, and 3 million tons of potash. It was an unparalleled performance. But what of today? Why the present low production and high costs? Among the black clouds in the mining sky none are so black as that presented by the labor situation. We know it is the result of the legislation and the interpretation of that legislation in the past ten or fifteen years. Since the passage of the Norris-LaGuardia Act in 1932, we have had nothing but a succession of laws, regulations, and decisions that have intensified the strength of the unions and made the operators of the mines and the sources of their financing prartirally impotent

Y., having been" nominated by a large number of leading members, and recommended by unammous vote of the Council, was unanimously elected an Honorary Member, in recognition of his distinguished services to the practice and the literature of mining and metallurgy, his zealous and loyal devotion to this Institute, his fraternal generosity towards professional colleagues, and his effective advocacy, by public utterance and private example, of the free communication of technical knowledge and experience. At the same meeting, By-Law IV., which now authorizes the Secretary to appoint an '1 Assistant Editor," was amended by substituting the words, " Assistant with the title of Editor." The Mariposa estate, a grant made by the Mexican Government to Juan 13. Alvarado, during the time when California was still under the dominion of Mexico, was purchased in 1847 by J. C. Fremont, and the United States patent issued to him in 1856. By sale, or its equivalent, money advanced, the property came into the hands of the Mariposa Company, June 25th, 1863, and through a varied existence of work and temporary inactivity, has as yet been kept as an undivided property, and rests at present with the Mariposa Land and Mining Company of California. I pass over this period of 15 years without giving the history of the ups and downs of the estate, partly because it is familiar to many, and also because I think in such a case this paper would assume too much the character of a narrative. The estate is situated in Mariposa County, California, about 170 miles southeast of San Francisco. It begins in lat. 37' 26' 38'' north, and long. 119' 55' west, and runs 6 miles north; thence 69 miles west; thence 5 miles northwesterly towards the Merced River; thence 84 miles southerly; thence 3 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 2 miles southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile northerly, and thence 2 miles easterly to the place of the beginning; embracing 44,387 acres (70 sq. miles) more or less. To describe this vast estate in detail as to its full geology, its numerous quartz veins, its many facilities to exploit them and work them by cheap methods, would lead me further than I intend to go at present, and I will content myself to describe the latest workings of the company and its immediate field of operations. As long ago as 1860 the late Dr. Adelberg advised the running of an adit from the northwestern edge of the estate at Benton Mills 011 the Mereed River. His object was to undercut the deepest workings of the then paying mines on the estate—the Pine Tree and Josephine. Following this advice, the tunnel known as "River Tunnel " was commenced. IN the four mills of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. in Peru, some 3000 tons of complex sulphide ores are treated daily, with four kinds of concentrates produced: copper, lead, zinc, and pyrite, each containing values in silver, gold, bismuth, and some other metals. Copper occurs in the various ores as chalcopyrite, enargite, tetrahedrite, tenantite, bournonite, and chalcocite; lead as galena; and zinc as sphalerite and marmatite. Small amounts of silver and tungsten minerals are also present. The gangue consist mainly of shale, quartzite, calcite, rhodochrosite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. In general the values are freed with a relatively coarse grind, about 70 prr cent minus 200 mesh being the finest to which the pulps are ground. In Morococha and Casapalca however. sphalerite particles much finer than this contain inclusions of chalcopyrit r. At Cerro de Pasco the silver and gold are present in all sizes of the ground pyrite.

By elimination of other possible nucleation processes, it has been demonstrated, for commercially pure magnesium and a Mg-Al alloy, that at stresses less than that necessary for triple-point cracking creep cavities are most probably nucleated heterogeneously at second-phase particles. Evidence for the existence of such particles is presented and the role of grain boundary sliding in the nucleation process is examined quantitatively. DURING creep deformation of polycrystalline magnesium and its dilute alloys in the temperature range 0.45 to 0.7 Tm (Tm = absolute melting temperature) cavities form mainly along grain boundaries oriented normal to the stress axis and failure eventually occurs by their growth and impingement.' The possibility of low-ductility creep failure of magnesium-alloy reactor cans during service has prompted a number of studies of cavity formation in these materials.2-5 In this paper divergent theories of cavity nucleation6-10 are examined critically and conclusions drawn regarding the most probable mechanism of formation of cavities in magnesium. The paper is divided into two parts. The first section consists of the review and quantitative assessment of the possible role of grain boundary sliding in the nucleation process. In the second part an experimental program is described where an electron-microscope technique has been used to determine if second-phase particles exist in as-received commercially pure magnesium and in a magnesium alloy 1) THEORETICAL REVIEW Possible nucleation sites for creep cavities are: a) high-angle grain boundary triple points,11-14 b) subboundary/grain boundary intersections,15-18 c) ledges in the grain boundary, 19-25 d) second-phase particles. 9,26-30 Each of these possibilities is now considered with special reference to deformation of magnesium. 1.1) Triple-Point Cracking. The stroh31 condition to nucleate fracture is: " > vr [1] where ss = applied shear stress, ? = surface energy, C = shear modulus, L = length of sliding interface. This relationship is independent of the nature of the interface and it is possible to calculate the stress concentration at the end of a sliding high-angle grain boundary and thus deduce, approximately,* the minimum applied stress necessary to nucleate triple-point cracking. Such theoretical predictions for Nimonic alloys have been made by McLean13 and found to agree quite closely with the minimum stress determined by experiment. Stresses capable of nucleating triple-point cracking should also be sufficient to nucleate fracture at a grain boundary due to intragranular slip, for the lengths of sliding interface in the two cases are approximately equal. Thus the minimum stress for triple-point cracking should represent a demarcation between failure due to general "cracking" and that due to cavitation. Hauser, Landon, and Dorn32 have demonstrated that for polycrystalline magnesium in the temperature range 78° to 298°K the fracture stress is inversely proportional to the square root of the mean grain diameter. As pointed out by stroh31 this result indicates that Eq. [I] describes the fracture characteristics of magnesium at low temperatures. Heal3 has reported that for rapid deformation (112 pct hr-1) of polycrystalline magnesium the transition from cracking to cavitation occurs in the temperature range 175" to 275°C. He also presented the fracture-stress values for the same material tested under similar conditions. From Eq. DURING the summer of 1931, I spent four months in a study of the Willow Creek district, Alaska. This work was part of a general investigation of the territory contiguous to the route of the Government- owned Alaska Railroad. It was conducted by the U. S. Geological Survey to determine the real and potential merits of the mineral deposits, to stimulate development of them, and thus to increase the traffic on the Alaska Railroad.

SUGGESTIONS that existing schools give instruction bearing on the mineral industry, or that schools for that purpose should be established in the United States, began to be made early, and it would require too much space to catalogue them all. Some of the more important may be mentioned to indicate their general character. In the "advertisement to such parents as have now (or expect to have) children prepared to be educated in the College of New York," which appeared in the New York Mercury of June 3, 1754, Samuel Johnson, the first president of King's College, the predecessor of Columbia, said that it was the "design of this college to instruct and perfect the youth," among other things, "in the arts of Numbering and Measuring of Surveying, and Navigation and Geography. . . . and in the Air, Water and Earth around us, and, the various kinds of Meteors, Stones, Mines and Minerals, Plants and Animals; and in the knowledge of all Nature in the Heavens above us, and of everything useful for the Comfort, Convenience and the Elegance of Life . . . " Though the concept that natural science should be used to enlarge the bounds of human life was thus implicit at Columbia from the very beginning (John Stevens graduated from it in 1768, James Renwick in 1807, Horatio Allen in 1823, and A. W. Craven in 1829), it was only during the period of Renwick's professorship of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Chemistry (1820- 1853) that much attention was given to applied science.* Among the Austin papers, published by the American Historical Association,2 there is a draft in Stephen F. Heats of formation of Au-Zn alloys of compositions Au3Zn and AuZn were rneasured at several temperatures by liquid tin solution calorimetry. The data for Au3Zn show that much smaller heat and entropy effects are associated with the a2- a1 transformation than for the a1 - a transformation. This result is consistent with reported X-ray diffraction studies which indicate that the a1 and (a2 phases have ordered structures which only slightly differ, whereas the a phase is disordered. The heat of formation of AuZn(ß') does not change significantly between 322o and 8000 K, confirming that the ß' alloy remains highly ordered to high temperatures. Not many measurements have been made of the energies of order-disorder transformations in alloy phases. In many cases these energies may be conveniently determined by measuring heats of formation as a function of temperature. Many alloy phases approximately obey Kopp's law of additivity of heat capacities; as a consequence their heats of formation do not change with temperature. In ordered alloys, however, a decrease in degree of order with increasing temperature will contribute an endothermic component to the heat of formation. Thus, for ordered phases where other anomalous contributions to heat capacity in the alloy or its pure components are absent, a measured change in the heat of formation may be attributed to the energy of disordering. A portion of the Au-Zn phase diagram1" is shown in Fig. 1. The composition AuZn(ß') has a well-ordered superlattice structure of the CsCl type at room temperature. The alloy is considered to remain ordered to its melting point,1 although, from X-ray diffraction data and electromotive force measurements of zinc activities, Terpilowski3 concluded that considerable disordering began at -673°K. The Au3Zn composition is a disordered fee solid solution (a) at high temperatures. Between 693o and 543oK, the ailoy orders to form the a1 phase, having a structure based on the L12(AuCu3) type, but with a regular distribution of ordering faults in the c direction, making it tetragonal. Below 543oK, the alloy orders further by means of slight atomic shifts, without diffusion, yielding a complex long-period orthorhom-bic superlattice structure, a2.4-7 Heats of formation of Au3Zn(a2) and AuZn(ß') were measured at 363°K by Biltz et al.8 by aqueous solution calorimetry. Heat capacities of several alloys between 14.9 and 38.4 at. pet Zn in the range from 373" to 723°K were measured by Iwasaki ef al.6 Stoichiometric Au3Zn, however, was not included in the alloys measured, the nearest composition being 26.1 at, pet Zn. Also, the heating rate used for the measurements, 2 deg per min, may not have permitted equilibrium to be reached in the neighborhood of the transformations. Heat contents of solid and liquid AuZn were measured between 488o and 1138°K by Kubaschewski.9 It was decided to determine the ordering energies of Au3Zn and to check on the possible disordering of AuZn by measuring the heats of formation of these alloys at several temperatures. The present paper reports measurements by liquid tin solution calorimetry of the heats of formation of the three phases of Au3Zn at temperatures within their regions of stability, and of AuZn at a low (322°K) and a high (800°K) temperature. EXPERIMENTAL Alloy Preparation and X-Ray Examination. Ten-gram ingots of Au3Zn and AuZn were prepared by melting weighed amounts of gold (99.95 pct Au) and zinc (99.99 pet Zn) together in sealed evacuated Vycor tubes at 1060°K, followed by rapid quenching. The resulting ingots were homogenized at 900°K for 10 days. The Au3Zn alloy lost no weight in preparation, the loss from the AuZn alloy was enough to introduce an uncertainty of only 0.1 at. pet in its composition. Filings for X-ray examination were taken from various parts of each ingot and strain-annealed at 723°K for 20 min in vacuo. The Au3Zn filings were quenched rapidly to retain the disordered phase. Diffraction patterns were determined with an X-ray dif-fractometer using copper Ka radiation.

The Choco placers, mined continuously since the earliest expeditions of the Spanish conquistadors, were exploited by the Indians prior to the conquest. Platinum is found in varying percentages with gold throughout the Choco placers and is found in minor percentages in some placers in other parts of Colombia. The Choco Department is on the west coast of Colombia between the western range of the Andes and the Pacific Ocean and extends from the San Juan River north beyond Panama to the Caribbean. The first reference in European literature to platinum was by Julius Caesar Scaliger in 1557. He did not assign any name to it but referred to it as an infusible metal found in the mines in the New World. The Spaniards had given it the name platina, which is the diminutive for plata, the Spanish word for silver. Don Antonio de Ulloa first recorded the name while on an official visit to the Choco from Spain in 1735.

If the tonnage of merchantable iron ore remaining in the Lake Superior district is divided by the average of the annual shipments for the past 20 years, it will be found that this ore supply will be exhausted in approximately 35 years. This computed exhaustion period would be an indication of the future activities of the iron-mining industry if it were not for the fact that merchantable ore is being manufactured from low-grade ore, of which there is an almost inexhaustible supply in the Lake Superior district. It is true that at present only the simplest of these low-grade ores are being concentrated to any considerable extent, but progress is being made with the treatment of the more complex ores, and now, in addition to 20 washing plants on the Mesabi Range, three plants are equipped with jigs for the treatment of ore that cannot be concentrated simply by washing. The latest addition to the ore-treating plants of the Mesabi Range is a magnetic roasting and concentration plant at Cooley, Minn., in which ore that cannot be concentrated either by washing or by jigging is roasted to the magnetic state and concentrated on magnetic separators. This plant is beginning its third season of operation, and while it is too soon to make definite predictions, there are strong indications that this new process may make commercially possible the manufacture of high-grade, merchantable iron ore from large quantities of low-grade ore now considered worthless. After the iron oxide contained in an ore has been converted to magnetite, almost any desired grade of concentrate can be produced, using magnetic-concentration equipment of the types now in general use for the concentration of the natural magnetites of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The conversion of hematite (Fe203) to magnetite (Fe3O4) is easily accomplished by heating the ore to a dull red temperature in a reducing atmosphere. The reaction is slightly endothermic, and while it requires 200 B.t.u. to heat to 900' F. one pound of hematite ore containing 45 per cent Fe, it requires only 100 B.t.u. to convert the oxide into magnetite. A series of correlating charts have been prepared to enable the field engineer to predict the amount of stock tank fluid produced by stabilization of first stage separator fluid. The charts shown are particularly convenient for estimating the relative effect of temperature and pressure in economic studies. Further work is planned to investigate the factors affecting stage separation' yo supplement this preliminary work. The direct correlation of separation variables is dictated as a convenience to eliminate the trial and error calculation necessary when using the standard flash vaporization equations. These are obtained by a material balance using the equilibrium vaporization ratio K, and have appeared in the following, or similar. form many times in the literature. where La = mols of any component n in the separator liquid Ko — equilibrium vaporization ratio for any component at separator pressure and temperature Fa = mols of any component n in the feed Vn = mols of any component n in the vapor V = total mols of separator vapor These equations may of course be effectively and accurately solved by use of digital and analog computers. However, these are not usually readily available in field offices and the need often arises for fast results during routine operational problems. Consequently, many methods have been devised in an attempt to simplify the basic calculation.2-14 The methods proposed are generally satisfactory, but do not eliminate trial and error methods and the necessity of subsequent calculations to obtain the answer in volume terms. The purpose of this work. therefore, was to develop accurate charts that would give the result directly in gallons. When using stage separation the recoveries would be lower than those shown, for stabilization usually gives about 95 + per cent recovery on the potential stock tank components in the separator liquid. The recoveries are shown in terms of a 14 psi Reid Vapor Pressure product which has a true vapor pressure of 14.7 psia at 98°F. Consequently, this product represents a stable stock tank liquid under normal storage conditions. To estimate natural gasoline re- coveries by stabilization the volume shown may be multiplied by 1.20 for 18 Ib RVP natural gasoline and 1.36 for 26 lb RVP natural gasoline. PROCEDURE The five analyses shown in Table 1 were chosen since they were representative of wellstream compositions often found and had almost the same propanes plus liquid content, expressed in gallons per 1,000 std. cu ft of wellstream. The distribution of the components though is widely variant. A temperature range of 0-100°F. and a pressure range of 200 to 1,250 psia was chosen inasmuch as most separations fall within these limits The K values used were modified values of those originally published by Katz and Hachmuth.' In the range chosen these have generally given good results when predicting fluid recoveries. The choice was somewhat arbitrary, for the authors' personal experience has shown that

A CORPORATION would go into bankruptcy if its affairs were conducted as are those of the state of New York, according to the Committee on New York State Government Reorganization of the American Engineering Council of the Federated American Engineering Societies, in a report to the chairman, of the Joint Judiciary Committees of the Senate and Assembly. The report, just made public, was signed by the three members of the committee who were appointed by Herbert Hoover. They were H. de-B. Parsons, chair- man, Paul G. Brown and Lewis B. Stillwell. Although the American Engineering Council is a national organization, it decided to aid in governmental reorganization in New York State because of the magnitude of the task. The Council's committee in its report urged the passage of three state reorganization amendments for consolidation of departments, an executive budget system, and a four-year term for the higher state officials. From earliest recorded times, limestone has been employed in the industrial life of peoples of all sections of the world where it exists. It is widely distributed and therefore has been available in almost every country and has been employed for a variety of purposes. Its earliest use was for buildings, since it is more easily quarried and dressed than most other kinds of rocks and so could be utilized by early inhabitants, poorly equipped with tools. The next use was in the manufacture of lime, which was employed by the ancients in mortar. These two uses of limestone are still all important, but they have been overshadowed in scores of regions by literally hundreds of new applications for raw limestone or products made from it. Anyone familiar with modern manufacturing processes can quickly call to mind many industries in which limestones are essential, and new uses are continually coming to notice. Any enumeration would probably be incomplete and soon out of date. Origin of Limestone Disregarding details and unusual types concerning which often there is insufficient evidence and considerable difference of opinion, limestones have been formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from solution through the action of organisms, both plants and animals, or in a limited number of instances by chemical reactions without the intervention of living forms. Some of the organisms extracted the calcareous material in order to build up hard structures, either as bony skeletons or as coverings (clams, snails, etc.), whereas others in their life functions emitted substances that resulted in the precipitation of the soluble constituents outside the organisms themselves. In some instances the organisms utilized only calcium carbonate but in some cases other compounds as well were precipitated. Various materials have been found in the hard parts of animals, and for that reason it is almost impossible to find a pure natural limestone; that is, one composed entirely of CaCO3.
