Worldwide minerals exploration slipped in 1992 from 1991 levels. Although industrial production figures showed the US economy emerging from recession in early 1992, it was not until February 1993 that the lagging indicator of unemployment dropped to 7%. Most other industrialized countries are still in recession. Preliminary data for 1992 showed industrial production dropping in Japan (5%), Germany (1.4%), the United Kingdom (0.5%) and France (1.4%). The slowdown in industrial production led to reduced mineral demand. This resulted in lean cash flows from mining operations, which squeezed exploration funding. Although mineral prices were steady during most of 1992, some mineral commodity prices began falling in late 1992 and early this year. Exploration 1991-1992 According to Metals Economics Group (MEG), planned 1992 exploration expenditures were down by about 5%. Geographically, the leading exploration target was the United States with 21 % of the expenditures, followed by Australia (19%), Canada (18%), Latin America (15%), South Africa (9%) and the western Pacific (7.5%). The remaining 10% was split between Europe and Africa. There were absolute increases in exploration expenditures in the United States and Latin America. Latin America showed the largest increase. The change in the Mexican mining law allowing foreign ownership of mines should result in the inflow of direct foreign investment in Mexico's mining industry.

Several candidate sites have been proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), a facility that would provide over 2000 meters of overburden to screen out cosmic rays that would otherwise interfere with experiments. Types of anticipated experiments include: detection of dark matter and stellar neutrinos, and evaluation of deep microbial life forms. Engineering experiments might include more refined scanning devices to “see” rock defects ahead of tunneling, improved predictive models for groundwater inflows and tunnel support requirements, and improved instrumentation for monitoring in-situ stresses, rock deformations, and pore water pressures. Spin-offs from this research might include more sensitive security detectors for scrutinizing shipping containers, new drugs based on new microbes, and improved sensor systems for tunneling. A site near Leavenworth, WA, was assessed and shown to have numerous topographic and geotechnical advantages. Rock cover is on the order of 2250 meters. The granitic bedrock is suitable for tunneling a variety of large underground openings.

"The initial metallurgical response of the lead flotation circuit at Cominco Alaska's Red Dog Mine was substantially below feasibility expectations. A program of diagnostic mineralogical analysis pointed the way to a number of process improvements, including simplification of the flow sheet and installation of a large flotation column as a lead cleaner. A diagnostic mineralogical analysis of the improved circuit shows that inadvertent activation of both sphalerite and pyrite has been substantially reduced, resulting in significant improvements in metallurgical performance. Directions for further improvements to the circuit performance are suggested by the recent analysis.IntroductionRed Dog is a high-grade, sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposit with relatively simple mineralogy. The primary non-sulphide gangue minerals are quartz and barite, with minor barium carbonate (witherite). The iron sulphate minerals, siderotil, rosenite and copiapite occur variably throughout the deposit. Mineral texture is variable ranging from liberated sphalerite grains visible to the naked eye to intergrowths, particularly between sphalerite and galena, to less than ten microns. Both pyrite and marcasite are present. To date no enhanced reactivity of marcasite has been observed. For this discussion, ""pyrite"" will be used to refer to both iron sulphide minerals. In common with other sedex deposits, Red Dog contains organic and sulphur impurities."

Details are given of a Hydride Fuel System to provide 5 kg of HZ to fuel a Caterpillar 3304 engine previously modified to operate on hydrogen fuel and intended to power an underground mining vehicle. The Fuel System was installed onto the engine and the Engine/Fuel System tested under cold start conditions and a full range of engine loads and speeds. Refueling tests were also performed. The fuel system tested will support full engine power and allow delivery of at least 3/4-power on a continuous basis, from cold start conditions.

There are several long-standing rules of thumb that are often quoted in mine ventilation studies. They include airway ‘carrying velocities’ and the critical upcast air velocity range that must be avoided to prevent a water blanket forming. Quoting these rules of thumb may lend an air of legitimacy to a ventilation design, and allow the design engineer to avoid having to study a problem from first principles. But how valid are these shortcuts in today’s rapidly changing world? This paper summarises research into the genesis of several commonly quoted rules of thumb. It finds that they were very specific to the local conditions, practices and economics at the time they were developed. It also presents examples where applying these rules of thumb outside of their original context can lead to unexpected and erroneous results.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2017. This paper reviews the use of crush pillars on mines in the Bushveld Complex and the Witwatersrand Supergroup. Stress measurements were undertaken in order to determine the residual strength of these crush pillars. The results from these stress measurements are compared with previous attempts to determine the residual strength of crush pillars using back analysis. It is concluded that the residual strength of such crush pillars lies in a band between 13 MPa and 25MPa. Using the data from the stress measurements, as well as published and unpublished data, a stress-strain curve for a crush pillar with a width-to-height ratio of 2:1 is proposed. Where further work is required, this is indicated in the text.

Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. Both the habit plane of martensite and the orientation relationship between the matrix and martensite platelets of different habit planes have been investigated in binary titanium alloys with molybdenum, chromium, and iron. The effect of the mode of deformation on the martensite habit plane was studied. A micrograph of an exposed mar-tensite platelet is presented. IN the study of martensitic transformation in Ti-Mn alloys,' two martensite habit planes—{334), and {344)8—were reported. The {334), habit was also observed in unalloyed titanium upon transformation,' although there is disagreement with respect to the exact indices. The other habit plane, {344),, has not been reported in martensitic transformation in any other alloys. The present investigation was made to determine whether other binary titanium alloys with P-stabil-izing elements would exhibit a crystallography of transformation similar to that of Ti-Mn alloys. Furthermore, since martensite platelets can be induced by deformation under certain conditions, it was of interest to investigate whether the mode of deformation, compressive or tensile, would influence the formation of martensite platelets on a specific plane in an alloy system which possesses two martensite habit planes. Experimental Procedure The material used for the preparation of the binary alloys of iodide titanium with molybdenum, chromium, and iron had the following purities: 99.99 pct iodide titanium, 99.9 pct molybdenum, 99.423 pct chromium, and 99.9 pct iron. The compositions of alloys listed in this paper are in nominal weight percentage. All specimens used were prepared and treated according to the procedure described in reference 1, unless stated. For the subzero temperature treat,ment the following experimental schedule was followed. After specimens had undergone the grain-growth treatment, they were quenched into an ice-water bath and were then metallographically examined. In specimens of higher alloy content, no martensitic transformation was observed. In those in which mar-tensitic transformation did occur, only specimens in which the martensite platelets existed as fine needles in localized regions were used. All specimens were reannealed 17 hr at 1200°C, quenched into ice water. and the capsule was broken. They were held in the ice water for from 5 to 10 sec, then transferred to a liquid-argon bath. This stepped quenching procedure was found to be more efficient than direct quenching into liquid argon. In the latter case, as soon as the hot specimen was immersed in the liquid argon, a protective, insulating layer of argon gas formed, and the specimen continued to glow vividly in the bath for some time. In the study of the habit behavior of martensite produced by deformation, specimens were deformed at room temperature either by compression, tension, or rolling. Martensite habit planes were determined by the two-surface analysis procedure described in reference 1. A stereographic net of 153/4 in. diam was used throughout the investigation. "This paper evaluates the history, construction and most importantly the performance of two remedial seepage cutoff walls installed in two major dams in the United States. Beaver Dam, on the White River in northwest Arkansas, was completed in 1966 and seepage through the karstic limestone under the embankment was apparent almost immediately upon filling of the reservoir. Several attempts to stop the seepage by grouting were unsuccessful. In 1994 a cutoff wall consisting of secant piles drilled with 32"" diameter down-the-hole hammers to a maximum depth of 185'?was completed and the seepage was reduced to a negligible amount. It has been over 20 years since the completion of the cutoff wall, and all indications are that the cutoff wall is performing as expected. Walter F. George Lock and Dam on the Chattahoochee River near Fort Gaines, Georgia, was completed in 1963 and suffered the same problem as Beaver Dam due to the limestone on which the dam was founded. Cutoff walls were installed in both embankments (1980s) and solved the problem in these areas, but under-seepage at the concrete lock, dam and spillway structures increased to the point that remediation was essential. The cutoff wall had to be installed through 110'?of water and another 100'?into rock upstream of an active dam that continued to generate electricity during the construction of the cutoff wall. A secant pile wall, in combination with a diaphragm wall, was completed in front of these structures in 2004. It has been over 10 years since the completion this cutoff wall and, again, the cutoff wall is performing as expected. The paper describes the construction of these cutoffs, but focuses on the long-term performance in terms of controlling seepage and piezometric levels.BEAVER DAMBeaver Dam is located on the White River, 609 miles above its mouth, in Carroll County, Northwest Arkansas. The construction of the dam and Beaver Reservoir was authorized on September 1954 by the Congressional Flood Control Act for purposes of water supply, flood control and hydroelectric power generation. THERE are certain facts that the mining industry in Australia is faced with at the present moment which may be accepted as axioms. The industry is at a low ebb, as evidenced by statistics. Metals form the basis of all modern industries, and are necessaryfor the welfare of Australia. Mining is a wasting asset. Every ton of ore extracted is one ton less which c.annot be made good, and it should be our duty to get as much profit froin that ore as possible, otherwise there is a permanent loss to the country.The metal market cannot be controlled by Australia; it is more or less an international matter. Australia has not been thoroughly prospected. There are no mines being developed that are likely to replace those which are being depleted.Our mining engineers are as capable as those in other parts of the world, and have made good where they have been given a chance. There is no one cause for the present depression; there are several, more or less, interwoven. Of course, the war has had an adverse effect, but that has only dislocated things temporarily; it upset our markets, influenced the price of metals, and affected the labour market and cost of stores. Labour troubles made their appearance before the wave of unrest swept over the world. The cause of labour discontent must be investigated, and if possible removed. As each industry has .its·own problems, miners must inquire into their special problems, as there is no sovereign remedy that will suit all cases.It is obvious that we cannot mine ore if we do not know where it is; therefore, the first thing is to discover workable deposits.

The Federal Bureau of Mines contacted 29 organizations--mine maintenance departments and equipment manufacturers--concerning service experience and construction of diesel exhaust-gas water scrubbers. Scrubbers are used primarily on mobile diesel-powered mining equipment subject to 30 CFR 36. Because the scrubbers cool exhaust gas and act as flame arresters, their failure would compromise safety in underground mines. Scrubber maintenance problems and frequency and modes of failure were identified, and construction materials and techniques were evaluated. Three failed scrubbers were randomly selected from two cooperating mines, and their modes of failure were determined. In conjunction with failure analyses, mine water and scrubber water solution samples were chemically analyzed to characterize corrosive properties. Sludge and mineral deposits and different types of corrosion and metal fatigue were identified as problems leading to scrubber failure. The corrosion process is explained; maintenance practices, construction materials, and manufacturing methods that could be used to reduce premature failures and allow longer effective scrubber life are identified; and basic changes in scrubber design are suggested. If type 304 stainless steel is used throughout the scrubber and regular maintenance is performed, long, dependable service can be expected. Other materials such as 304L, 316, or other more exotic steel alloys may be necessary under certain conditions.

The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr2O3. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 16 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, stope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider stopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

Leaching operations combine both metallurgical and hydraulic processes to extract metals from the ore heap. In the design of leaching operations, metallurgical tests and simple hydraulic tests are often conducted to define operational parameters such as leach cycle time, application rate, lift height, and effective leach area. While metallurgical constraints are often the primary focus on leach facility design, the hydraulic factors are also critical to the overall success of the operation. Some of the hydraulic factors that are known to impact solution flow through heaps include: • Ore physical and hydraulic properties, • Variation in ore properties under heap loading, • Ore mineralogy and its susceptibility to chemical and/or mechanical degradation, and • Heterogeneities within the heap. This paper presents a discussion on hydraulic factors that may impact the effectiveness of leaching operations. In addition, methods are presented which may be used to assess flow conditions within active and inactive heaps.

IN the development of the incandescent electric lamp one aim of the investigators has been to establish the fundamentals of lamp design, so that the performance of any new lamp may be accurately predicted. The study of the temperature relations in lamps has done much toward establishing these fundamentals. The outstanding differences are the filament form and the bulb shape. The ideal lamp is one in which the filament operates at a uniform temperature throughout its length. In practice, it is necessary to disturb this uniformity by the introduction of supports and terminals. The amount of cooling at the supports and terminals affects the over-all efficiency of the filament as a light producer. "Process control technology holds very significant potential benefits for many mineral and coal processing plants. The impact can be expected in terms of performance improvements (e.g. increased throughput, better quality control, higher availability), through reduced operating costs (e.g. lower reagent consumptions, manpower reductions) and in the form of intangibles (e.g. reduced vulnerability to manpower turnover, increased productivity in the user group). However, the installation of a process control system will represent considerable capital expenditure and will generate an operating cost. No management team would approve the funding for such a project without some reasonable measure(s) of the profitability of a proposed system. This paper describes a methodology for addressing the justification problem. Of particular interest is the approach to quantifying performance improvements, frequently found to be the predominant benefit of process control.INTROPUCTIONProcess control has become widely recognized as an essential component of any processing operation. It has direct impact on productivity, process efficiency and product marketability. The reported pay backs associated with successful installations underscore this observation. As a consequence, many operators who have little in the way of process automation are looking to initiate control projects, while those who currently enjoy some level of automation are looking to upgrade existing control systems (= process + instrumentation + hardware + software + operators + support). While the emphasis here would appear to be on retrofit process control projects, new plants, or those currently in the design stage, will usually find themselves in one of these categories shortly after startup 1."

This paper presents an analysis of the production data for the period 1861 - 1953 from hydrothermal gold-silver deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield. To directly compare the metal content of the deposits a figure of ounces of gold equivalents (oz gold equivalent) is calculated from the value of the gold-silver bullion produced from each deposit. Frequency distributions for ore tonnage and oz gold equiv. appear to be lognormal and show a high proportion of very small deposits, with 90 per cent less than 100 000 tonnes. The deposits when plotted in order of size fall roughly on a smooth curve which suggests that the size distribution is not random. A large proportion (68 per cent) of the total gold-silver extracted from the Hauraki district was contained in the largest deposit û Waihi. A technique used for predicting undiscovered mineral resources is ZipfÆs law, which relates the size of an item to its rank order. The figures for ounce gold equivalents from the major Hauraki deposits fit ZipfÆs law remarkably well. Taking Waihi at 6.8 million oz gold equivalent as the rank one deposit, Thames is number five and Karangahake number seven. A Zipf plot indicates that down to rank 100 (68 000 oz gold equivalent) only 28 per cent of the total gold-silver resource in the Hauraki Goldfield has been extracted. A further 72 per cent or 25.4 million oz gold equivalent, including the deposits of rank 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10, are undiscovered. However, since some deposits will be deeply buried under younger rocks and others will be under the sea only a proportion of the total resource will be discoverable.

As part of a research program to reduce injuries and fatalities in the U.S. mining workforce, NIOSH is investigating the potential use of noncontact vibration measurements to identify hazardous ground fall conditions. In the present study, the effectiveness of remote vibration sources in exciting resonant responses in damaged structures is examined. Initial experiments were performed on a damaged concrete slab in a controlled environment. Vibration response was measured with a laser Doppler vibrometer using both single-point and two-dimensional array recordings. Excitation sources included direct mechanical impacts to remote portions of the slab and a remotely located industrial demolition hammer. Surficial damage was effectively delineated with both sources through visualization of vibration response in spectral bands selected to discriminate wave propagation from large-scale slab resonance effects.

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context in which they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage such as nuclear power generation where international cooperationis eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit its mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions.
