A five steps remediation program was commissioned in 1998 for the acid generating Lorraine mine site, located in the Témiscamingue region, Quebec, Canada. It included, as the main expenditure, a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) used to limit oxygen migration. After construction of the cover, instruments were installed on site to monitor the CCBE performance. Modified oxygen consumption tests were also done to measure the oxygen flux through the cover. Results from water content and suction data, measured from 1999 to 2003, show that the capillary barriers effects are effective and that the water retention layer stays near saturation throughout the years. Oxygen fluxes estimated from monthly water content measures are generally below 10 g/m2/year. Results from modified oxygen consumption tests made on the site give almost similar oxygen fluxes. A two dimension numerical model of the Lorraine mine site was also constructed to verify that mathematical models could predict realistically the in situ conditions on such a large scale site. Numerical results obtained for three years show a good concordance between measured and calculated values. The results obtained form these different evaluation methods for the performance of a CCBE concur and confirm the efficiency of this cover in limiting acid mine generation.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic-Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the lllawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in the survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the upper part of the llawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey.A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55° has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by combined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

Kidd Mine in Northern Ontario is now producing from Stage 1 of the Mine D expansion project ? mining between 2100 m and 2700 m below surface. Planning for Stage 2 of the Mine D project is already well advanced and will see the mine extended potentially to 3100 m below the surface. To ensure adequate ventilation is maintained at such depths, two large axial fans have been installed on the 6000 Level (1800 m below surface) as exhaust booster fans to operate in series with the surface exhaust fans. The Kidd Mine 6000 Level Booster Fans are a unique installation with unique and often unexpected challenges. These challenges have been met and attacked through the combined efforts of mine and fan manufacturer personnel with a common focus.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1979, 12 companies operated 32 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 64% of production. Washington, Oregon and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States 20%; other Northern States 32%; and other Southern States 16%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1979 was valued at over $6 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1979, building accounted for about 24%; packaging 23%; transportation 22%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 8%; and other uses, 12%.

The Timbarra opencut gold mine is located about 30 km(19 miles) southeast of Tenterfield in northern NSW some 4 hours by car from Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia. It was a small operation designed to produce about 40000 ounces of gold per annum utilising contract mining and company owned crushing plant feeding heap leach pads. This is a standard setup except that the mine owner was in charge of all aspects of drill & blast design even though a contract drilling & blasting (shotfiring) service was being provided. The major problem was that the blasting operations were yielding massive amounts of oversize due to the jointed partially weathered nature of the granite. This was adversely affecting all downstream aspects of the operation as well reducing gold output as ore boulders were being dozed over the side of the mine as they were impinging on mining productivity. The oversize problem had to be solved as the mine was struggling to achieve design gold output. Significant design & trialing effort using minesite resources were utilised to reduce the oversize but this failed even when powder factors up to 1kg/bcm(1.68lb/yd) were used. Dyno Consult from Dyno Nobel were therefore called to investigate, review & trial options to reduce oversize from the top flitch.

A theoretical model is described for prediction of the capacity of fines from porous ores, such as cokes and sintered ores, to be removed by a pneumatic, horizontal-type classifier prior to charging into a blast furnace. First, the influence of variation in the apparent density and drag coefficient of porous ores on removal efficiency is analysed from a stochastic standpoint. The effect on efficiency of collisions between particles in the classifying region is then examined analytically in relation to the ratio of the mass flow rates of particles and air (the loading ratio). Finally, a theoretical model is constructed that takes these factors into account. Theoretical and experimental results are compared and classifying efficiency is discussed from both experimental and theoretical viewpoints.

The reef is a PGE-enriched sulphidic zone, stratigraphically associated with and overlapping the C1d chromitite layer, that was formed by magmatic processes at the 1e-1d subunit boundary. Two distinct patterns of PGE enrichment are related to the presence or absence of Cr2O3 oversaturation during sulphide liquation that occurred during a complex sequence of changes at this boundary

The robustness of the large-sections correction procedure, Hill's fast approximation, Barbery's correction and the PARGEN correction was examined by comparing their ability to reconstruct the true liberation distribution using sectioning data from computer-generated spheres. The results indicate that the flexibility of a correction procedure is related to the assumptions it makes about the continuity of the liberation distribution, locked-particle characteristics and ore texture. Overall, the large-sections procedure appeared to be the most generally applicable. The Hill fast approximation performed well, but this was probably because it partially incorporates the sphere model; the performance of the PARGEN and Barbery corrections varied from case to case.

"Rio Tinto Fer et Titane processes the ore extracted from the Lac Tio orebody to concentrate the hemo-ilmenite (FeO.TiO2-Fe2O3) mineral that is subsequently smelted to produce pig iron and titanium oxide slag. The ore is crushed, heat treated (roasted) and concentrated using dry magnetic separators. This paper describes a model to predict the magnetic susceptibility of the roasted ore and its behaviour in the magnetic separation plant. The model uses a classification of the ore as a function of the size and magnetic susceptibility of the particles. A subsequent division into mineral species allows the simulation of the magnetic separation process. The model is used to assess various operating options when process disturbances occur.INTRODUCTIONOre processing operations consist of ore size reduction followed by the recovery of valuable species in a concentrate that is subsequently sold for its minerals or metal content. The concentration processes are based on the physical and/or chemical properties of the minerals contained in the ore. Flotation is typically used to recover minerals of base metals such as copper, zinc, lead or nickel. Iron ore and other dense minerals are typically concentrated by gravity separation processes. Magnetic separation uses the magnetic properties of the minerals to concentrate magnetite and other minerals, to clean coal concentrate and to recycle ferrosilicon for dense separation processes (Brophy, 1985).Magnetic separators can be divided into low and high intensity separators and high gradient magnetic separators (Gillet, 2008). Most of the low gradient magnetic separators are built as rotary drums that are operated in wet or dry conditions. Dry magnetic drum separators are used by Rio Tinto Fer et Titane in Sorel-Tracy, Canada to concentrate hemo-ilmenite from the ore extracted at the Lac Tio Lake mine near Havre St-Pierre, Canada. The analysis of production data suggests that process improvement could be achieved by identifying key variables for the control of the magnetic separation circuit and/or by modification to the circuit flowsheet. The use of a process model was considered to be an effective approach to conduct a preliminary analysis of the circuit with a view toward process optimization. However, the literature contains few detailed studies dealing with the modelling of magnetic separation processes."

Malmberget town is located in northern Sweden, approximately 70 km north of the Arctic Circle. Parts of the town overlie more than 20 iron orebodies, consisting mainly of magnetite with smaller quantities of haematite. The mine is operated by the mining company LKAB. Mining started in the 17th century, but not until the railway to the coastal city of Luleå was completed in 1888 did large-scale production commence. Around 1920, mining proceeded underground and today sublevel caving is the only mining method used. Sublevel caving causes subsidence of the ground surface, and buildings and residential areas have been relocated due to the mining activities for more than 50 years. The number of seismic events accompanied by strong ground vibrations is now increasing. In 2008 the mine received a permit from the Environmental Court of Sweden to increase production to 20 Mt of crude ore per year. A prerequisite for the permit was that the mine conducts a number of investigations regarding the environmental impact on the residents of Malmberget. One of these investigations concerned how seismicity will change as production increases and what measures could be taken to reduce inconvenience to the town residents. Today the mine possesses an extensive seismic monitoring system with more than 180 underground and surface geophones. For this study, eleven seismically active volumes in Malmberget mine were identified, and for each of them, a yearly future maximum magnitude interval was estimated based on the current production plan. Relationships between historical seismic events and measured ground vibrations in the town of Malmberget were established, and future ground vibrations caused by expected seismic events were estimated using a probabilistic approach. The outcome was the number of intervals of expected ground vibration per year and per monitoring point. Possible measures to reduce inconvenience for the town residents include blast restrictions, sequencing, and possibly preconditioning. The ultimate long-term solution is an almost complete relocation of Malmberget town. This process has recently been formalized and LKAB is taking an active part in realizing this goal.

WHILE in the employ of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters and the Electrolytic Zinc Oompanies at their South Melbourne Research Station, the writer was detailed to investigate the principles underlying the Parkes Process with a view of determining:1. The Interdependence of the variables:(a) Quantity of zinc required per charge,(b) Temperature of stirring of each zincing,(c) Silver content of the bullion after first zinculg,(d) Silver content of the bullion after second zincing,(e) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting, with reference to the method of working the Parkes Process then in operation at Port Pirie.2. The possibility of effecting improvements in the Port Pirie practice of desilverising, especially with respect to:(a) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting.(b) Quantity of zinc required per charge.The method of desilverising in practice at Port Pirie was a two-stage zincing.In both zincings the bullion was cooled to its solidification temperature and the silver crusts which separated from the lead were completely removed.The crusts from the first zincing were retorted, and the crusts from the second zincing were returned to the first zincing of the next charge.

This article describes two new concepts regarding the CFA (Auger Cast) piles. The first one, MALI Effect, is an approach to control the casting phase, while the second one, NETA Shear, is a technique which converts the drilling rig into a geo-mechanical tool. We look upon the system of the auger and the ground as a piston inside a cylinder. When concrete (grout) is pumped into that system, an up lift force is generated (We call that force MALI Effect). That up lift force reduces the needed tension in the pull up cable. By analyzing the tension force in the cable we detect the up lift force of the concrete. That pushup force is the product of the real concrete pressure at the bottom of the auger by the area of that bottom. As the area is known, the real pressure is accurately calculated. A control loop which is based on MALI Effect is very sensitive, precise, objective, reliable and easy to be used. All the process is based on pure real physical measurements. The system has no assumptions, no comparisons, no parameters, no zeroing and no adjustments. When we penetrate into the ground like a theoretical screw, for about a meter in depth, and then brake the main cable while rotating the auger, a set of forces generates. As the auger tends to keep penetration, but the cable holds it - a tension force develops (We call that force NETA Shear). Analysis of that tension force shows that it relates to the ultimate shearing capacity of the ground.

Cemented rock fill (CRF) is often used to support open stope voids. This allows for the full recovery of ore while achieving global mine stability. In such cases, the exposed CRF masses require adequate compressive strength and stiffness to resist the forces and limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or development mining waste. This means that conventional laboratory samples cannot be readily used to determine the laboratory strength. Consequently, a research project was undertaken to determine the influence of sample size on uniaxial compressive strength. This paper presents the results from CRF samples that were prepared using the same mix design and then cast into moulds with diameters of 150, 240, 300 and 400 mm. The laboratory testing also allowed a better understanding of the effect of particle size distribution upon the overall strength of a rock fill mass. The laboratory results were compared to a database of large-scale results from the testing of fill masses from a number of mine sites.CITATION:Cordova, M, Saw, H and Villaescusa, E, 2016. Detailed petrographic analyses of coal seams from the Newcastle, Illawarra, and Lithgow Coal Measures were made for a number of localities for each of twelve seams. From these analyses characteristic standardprofiles were derived for each seam. Two broad types of profile were found; one in which vitrite-poor and vitrite-rich layers alternate, and another in which there is a steady decrease in vitrite from the base to the top of the seam. From comparison of the petrographic profiles it was concluded that the Great Northern Seam in the Northern Coalfield is a possible equivalent to the BulIi in the Southern; and likewise the Fassifern to the Balgowni...

"Kell is a hydrometallurgical treatment option for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, silver, and base metals from flotation concentrates to refined products on site. The process is cyanidefree, while eliminating emissions of sulphur dioxide, arsenic trioxide, and other toxic species often emitted by smelters and roasters. Kell has been tested on a range of concentrates, including PGMs (UG2, Merensky, Platreef, Great Dyke, Great Lakes, Lake Superior and others), refractory gold-silver, coppergold, and polymetallic concentrates. High extraction efficiencies (>95%) are achieved for value metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, Au, Ag, Ni, Cu, Co) and secondary metals (Sb, Zn, Pb, and others). Studies comparing Kell with smelter-refining show economic benefits: capex 18–33% of smelting; opex 51–66%; electricity consumption 13–46%; and environmental benefits: greenhouse gas emissions 57–61% of smelting, acidification 5–27%, human toxicity 37–62%, and freshwater ecotoxicity 43–55% of smelting. Synergies for Kell plants alongside smelter-refineries include utilization of recovered acid from sulphur abatement systems and excess capacity in precious metal refineries. Kell is unconstrained by concentrate grade and impurities, allowing the co-location of Kell plants for treatment of non-smeltable concentrates alongside existing smelters.Kell has been demonstrated in a nine-week integrated pilot campaign at 1:1000 scale, supporting a bankable feasibility study for a 110 000 t/a plant treating a UG2-Merensky concentrate at Pilanesberg Platinum Mine (PPM), owned by Sedibelo Platinum Ltd, which has along with South African Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), invested in Kell. Zimbabwean Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with KellTech for a centralized PGM concentrate processing plant."

Shortly after Denny, Robson, and Irwin published their first paper in 1937, on the prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium, experiments were begun on the practical application of the discovery.It was thought at that time that aluminium powder, to be effective in aluminium therapy, would have to be intimately admixed with siliceous dust at the latter's source. There followed several years of experimental work underground, during which the application of aluminium powder was tested in:(1) Speakers on machine columns, vibrated by drills.(2) Vials placed in drill holes to be blasted.(3) Both homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture with explosives.(4) Packages with tamping.(5) Compressed-air lines.(6) Special compressed-air ejectors for use while drilling and after blasting.(7) The discharge of ventilation fans.(8) The filters of respirators.It was concluded from this research that any adequate method of introducing aluminium powder into a mine atmosphere would require too much extra gear, supervision, and aluminium p;wder, and would interfere unduly with underground routine.Later, animal experiments by Denny, Robson, and Irwin2 showed that aluminium powder provided effective therapy when inhaled independent of silica dust. Therefore, some means of surface treatment was deemed more practical.APPARATUS USED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALUMINIUM PROPHYLAXIS SAMPLINGA basic requirement was a method of sampling to assess accurately the particle-size concentrations of dispersed aluminium powder. This circular is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines describing mining and beneficiation methods and costs at various mining operations throughout the United States. Inclusion of the Abbott mine in this series is of particular interest, as the complex geology and the character of the deposits make their exploitation a unique operation. The mine operates on a high-cost, comparatively small-scale basis, and only the persistence of an aggressive management has enabled it to maintain its rank among the major mercury producers of California. Rising costs and decreasing metal prices, which continuously threaten the low profit margin, are reflected in increased efficiency of operation. This report summarizes past operations and describes, in detail, the geology and ore deposits; exploration and mining methods; and furnacing and condensing operations. It covers the entire operation from initial exploration to the actual production of mercury. Comparative production costs for 1944 and 1958 are of special interest.
