The Manto Verde mine is found in the coastal ranges of the Atacama desert, 1000 km north of Santiago, Chile . The deposit is a fault-breccia specularite-oxide copper mineralisation hosted by the Jurassic andesites of La Negra Formation. It is located in a tensional fault that joins twoparallel arms of the Atacama Fault. The mine is in feasibility study: reserves are of the order of 60 Mt at 0.9 wt per cent soluble copper; mining will be undertaken at a rate of 11 000 tpd utilising an open pit and the ore will be heap-leached with acidified sea water, with copper recovery and by SX/EW.

"Kinross Gold Corporation’s Mantos de Oro (MDO) gold/silver mine in northern Chile currently processes 15,000 tpd of oxide ores through a mill, whole ore cyanide leach plant followed by a Merrill-Crowe refinery. With the expected depletion of these oxide ores in a few years a new sulphide mineral deposit, Ladera-Farellón has been identified to potentially replace existing ore reserves. The deposit contains approximately 0.5g/t Au, 6g/t Ag and 0.5% Cu. The principal sulphide mineral in the deposit is enargite (Cu3AsS4) which hosts the majority of gold and silver and the copper. Direct cyanidation testwork has shown the sulphide mineral is refractory with a low gold recovery of 36% and silver recovery of 45%. Oxidation of the sulphides is required to liberate gold and silver and allow recovery of copper as an important pay-metal. Therefore, at MDO a new metallurgical process route with oxidation as a pretreatment step is required for viable treatment of such new sulphide mineralized material with acceptable recoveries of pay-metals.Analysis of flowsheet options was completed based on bench-scale and pilot scale metallurgical testwork as well as with reference to existing studies and operations. The process options investigated assume concentration of sulphides by flotation, followed by either pressure oxidation, bacteriological oxidation or roasting. Preliminary evaluation of flowsheet options focused on process risk, operability, technology availability and the economics of the project with emphasis on use of the existing metallurgical plant to reduce capital cost. Operating costs for each process option were also included in the relative analysis.The challenges of treatment of MDO sulphides, principally enargite and pyrite for recovery of gold, silver and copper center on fixation of arsenic and sulphur capture with environmentally acceptable disposal of residue tailings. This environmental focus was included in the process option selection and comparative analysis.This paper presents a review of the process options considered and highlights comparative advantages/disadvantages of each process with associated environmental issues. Preliminary conclusions are drawn on roasting as a potentially favorable process option for the treatment of MDO sulphides."

The Phosphate Recovery Corporation operates three flotation plants, Nos. 1 and 2 concentrators about three miles northeast of Mulberry, Florida, and No. 3 plant at Wales, Tennessee. These plants represent the first commercial phosphate flotation operation and are also believed to be the largest nonmetallic flotation operation in the world at the present time. The details of this paper will be confined to plant No. 2, this being the newest and largest concentrator in Florida, and the flow sheet being practically the same as at plant No. 1. The No. 3 plant has been operated but a short time and has been shut down since December, 1932, on account of the decrease in phosphate rock production. The phosphate washers usually are located centrally on a known deposit so that about two hundred acres of ground can be mined economically to each washer location. The washers are moved to new areas when the distance becomes too great for economical pumping. The flotation plants are built either adjacent to a washer, so that current debris may be utilized, or on the site of a former washer where there is sufficient accumulated debris available for mining, and the flotation plants must also be moved from time to time. Most of the water used in the Florida flotation plants is recovered after passing through a circulating system where most of the fine suspended matter is settled out, but some make-up water is obtained from deep wells near the plant. Power is obtained from the Tampa Electric Co. through the distribution facilities of the International Agricultural Corporation. Flotation concentrate is hauled from the plant by trolley over the International Agricultural Corporation's trolley system, to the drying plant at Prairie, one mile northwest of Mulberry. This paper will discuss the inherent value engineering associated with the design and construction of approximately 184,000 SF of anchored tieback wall, installed as part of the widening and drainage improvements for KY9 in Campbell County, Kentucky. The total project is 2.2 miles in length. The anchored walls, excavation grading and drainage total to a complete project cost of $28.4 million. This is one of the largest design-build projects undertaken by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It also features another first for the Transportation Cabinet - the general contractor is responsible for quality control/quality assurance. The project is located just south of Cincinnati, OH and is situated along the east bank of the Licking River. The slopes along this stretch of the river have had a long history of movement and instability. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advertised the anchored wall portion of this project to be designed and constructed by pre-approved specialty contractors. The Transportation Cabinet provided the basic design parameters to each specialty contractor. Aspects to be discussed include the site and project history, previous attempts at slope stabilization along existing KY9, the technical proposal and bidding process, and the actual design and construction.

One of the fundamental issues having a great influence on the safety of operations performed in underground mines is the support of workings which should assure their stability in a given geological setting and mining-technical conditions during the life of their use. The process of designing and planning support for roadways may use analytical and empirical, as well as numerical methods. In view of the rapid increase in the data processing capacity of computers and the development of more and more enhanced software for numerical modeling, it seems to be advantageous to use numerical methods in searching for design solutions ? especially in the case of non-typical mining and geological conditions and in cases that need to take into consideration a great number of factors. The assessment of rock mass quality is of basic significance in designing mine supports. Fractures, dividing the rock mass into blocks, have an essential influence on the stability of the rock mass and underground construction. This paper presents examples of the fundamental underground investigations on the rock mass conducted by the Department of Extraction Technologies and Mining Supports of the Central Mining Institute in Poland, such as: penetrometric tests, introscopic examination, laboratory testing of rock samples and ground penetrating radar. Moreover, this contribution also presents examples of applications of three-dimensional numerical modeling for the purposes of stress-strain analysis of the rock mass around mine workings and computer-aided support design by means of FLAC3D (developed by Itasca) and Cosmos/M (developed by Structural Research and Analysis Corporation).

During the latter part of 1937 consideration was given to the construction of a; local smelting plant for producing blister copper. Previously copper concentrates had been shipped to the United States of America. The proposition had the advantages of a saving in cost of realization, quicker financial return and reduced dependence on overseas shipping.The smelter was designed by the existing staff, who had difficulty in obtaining data on small plants, particularly on the reverberatory furnace. Construction was started in March, 1938, and the reverberatory was blown in on January 16th, 1939. One roaster had been operating for several weeks prior to this date.While results and operating technique on this new departure in small-scale smelting are barely beyond the experimental stage, it is felt that the experience gained to this time should be recorded to help fill the obvious gap in published information covering plants of this type.At present there are three copper smelters operating in Australia; the other two plants are equipped with blast furnaces.LOCATIONThe new smelter is situated in a position convenient to the concentrator and to the power plant. AS a portion of a general study of liquid-metal thermodynamics, high-temperature galvanic cells were used to study the effect of added dilute solutes on the activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450° to 650°C. 1,2 The cells were of the type The experimental procedures have been described previously.1 In the course of studies conducted in the bismuth-rich corner of the systems Bi-Zn-Au and Bi-Zn-Cu, marked discontinuities were observed in the electromotive force-temperature relations for a number of the experimental compositions. Above the discontinuity temperatures, the relations, which were linear, exhibited slopes similar to the binary alloy of the same mole fraction zinc, as shown in Figs. I and 2. Below the discontinuity temperatures, the slopes were markedly different, but the relations remained linear. In general, as the amount of the third eletnent was increased, the slope of the lower portion of the relations tended to become less positive. The slopes of electromotive force-temperature relations reflect the entropy of mixing of zinc and, therefore, the occurrence of a discontinuity marks the transition between two different equilibrium situations involving the solution of zinc. A number of other investigators3-5 have used such observations to determine liquidus boundaries in binary alloys. Since the upper portions of the ternary electromotive force-temperature relations of this study had the same slopes as the binary alloys, the discontinuities are interpreted as marking the transition between the single-phase liquid region and the underlying two- and three-phase regions. Reference to the Zn-Bi equilibrium diagram6 confirms that the binary alloys were single-phase liquids at the experimental temperatures. Fig. I shows the electromotive force-temperature relations for the alloys containing Bi-Zn-Au and Fig. 2 shows similar relations for the Bi-Zn-Cu alloys. In the lower portion of each figure, the temperature of the discontinuity is plotted vs the mole fraction of the added solute at the various levels of zinc concentra- tion. Cross-plots from these curves at constant temperature permitted the construction of the partial liquidus surface isotherms shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

Vale Inco Ltd. is trialing several energy conservation initiatives in an effort to minimize costs and reduce green house gas emissions. The Ventilation on Demand (VOD) concept is a major project being carried out in various phases at Vale Inco mines. Due to the complex nature of a dynamic VOD system, Vale Inco is taking a systematic approach of testing VOD system components with milestone evaluations of each project. Coleman Mine was selected to pilot test the functionality and robustness of automated louvers in the underground environment; with the goal of optimizing mine airflow such that ventilation would be available for developing a new ore body. This project involved installing automated louvers in the exhaust raises; and installing variable frequency drive (VFD) starters on auxiliary supply fans. Because the VOD project created efficient utilization of the ventilation air in the 153 OB, the 170 OB is currently being developed without increasing the total fresh air into the mine. This paper describes the louver system component of VOD as applied at the mine.

"Operational challenges associated with solvent extraction (SX) plants include the effective on-line management of solids introduced from a variety of process streams. Solids are carried over from leaching circuits due to incomplete solid–liquid separation, may be formed as a result of chemical precipitation within the SX circuits, or introduced from downstream electrowinning operations. Solids in SX settlers result in operational challenges that impact plant availability and reduce optimized name-plate design capacity operation. Most available SX crud and bottom solids removal systems are limited in their effectiveness to handle high total suspended solids in SX circuits. Operations are often forced to take settlers off-line for complete removal of contained solids. These cleaning operations are hazardous, high risk, labour-intensive and costly in terms of production down-time and organic extractant and diluent reagent losses. Production pressure results in operations being reluctant to take SX settler units off-line for solids clean-out, resulting in continued operation of the SX, at reduced levels of mass transfer performance. Crud ForxTM is an SX solids removal system, for the on-line removal of interfacial and bottom solids associated with hydrometallurgical SX processes. A case study conducted at Glencore’s Mutanda Mining copper and cobalt operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo demonstrated the effectiveness of the Crud Forx. Benefits identified were an overall improvement in SX fire risk reduction, SX occupational health and safety and an improvement in copper mass transfer. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical copper extraction and purification processes are often associated with ultra-fine solids distribution profiles throughout the process flowsheet (Virnig et al., 1999). The level and impact of the undesired deportment of solids to process streams varies from operation to operation, but the common denominator for all operations that employ solvent extraction (SX) as a copper upgrading and purification step is that, at some stage, they will have to manage solids (crud) within the SX circuit. Available crud removal systems in the industry have had limited success in continuous, effective interfacial crud and bottom solids removal from SX settlers. Most operations use basic removal methodologies which, at best, only result in delaying the requirement for taking the affected SX settler stages off-line for complete clean-out. This operational methodology results in production loss, increased SX organic extractant consumption and adds occupational health and safety risk to SX operations. The integrated Crud ForxTM/Crud FrogzTM SX solids management system assists operations in on-line SX solids management. The system has been proven to significantly reduce the requirement for off-line cleaning of settlers."

Beatrix Gold Mine, a deep-level gold mine in the Free State province of South Africa, has the highest methane emission rate of any gold mine in the country. Methane is emitted from underground sources intersected during mining operations and is liberated into the general mine atmosphere. The total methane emission rate for the mine is of the order of 16001/s and the South section of the mine emits approximately 10001/s of methane gas. The mine has a history of gas accumulations which have led to a number of underground explosions. Following the last explosion in 2001 and the subsequent investigation, a number of recommendations were made. Two of these were to consider extracting the underground mine methane to render the mine atmosphere safe, and to declare hazardous locations that require special operating procedures. A number of such workplaces have now been declared at the South section of the mine. Methane gas is a potent, explosive greenhouse gas whose contribution to global warming and climate change is 21 times higher than that of carbon dioxide. To reduce its inherent danger and to mitigate its global warming impact, a carbon credit project under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol has been developed and implemented, the aim being to capture and destroy the methane at Beatrix mine. The mine has constructed an extraction system to capture and extract 400 (Is of the methane. Percentage methane (per volume) of the gas intersected at source is 85%, with negligible concentrations of other hydrocarbons and water associated. The mine contracted the services of Group Five to design and construct the flare and ancillary equipment on surface, and Promethium Carbon was contracted to assist with the carbon¬-related aspects, approval framework, and administration of the project. A number of design and construction challenges had to be faced to extract and transport the gas effectively to the surface of the mine as the emitters are approximately 3 600 m away from the mine shaft at a depth of 860 m. Further considerations were the requirements for the type of column to be used to transport the methane gas, the pressure loss over the system, the safety systems needed to address the risk factors involved in the transport of the methane gas, and a suitable pumping system to extract the gas to the surface. The system operates under negative pressure provided by two blowers on surface delivering the emissions to a flare capable of burning off 450 8/s of methane gas. In this paper a number of benefits for the mine are discussed. These include, but are not limited to, the removal of approximately 55% of the total volume of methane gas from the general body of the air in the geographical areas of the mine where the methane gas is emitted into the atmosphere, and reducing the risk of methane-related incidents. A further benefit of this project is the mitigation of the global warming impact of the methane gas and the reduction of the mine's carbon footprint by approximately 25%. This project could also assist in alleviating the energy shortage being experienced in South Africa by means of the planned generation of 4 MW of electrical power, utilizing the methane gas, as a second phase of the project.

The important theoretical foundations of "green" mining are the distribution and development characteristics of joints, fractures and bed separations, and the seepage and flow behavior of methane and water in the broken rock strata following coal mining. The main focus of "green" mining technique includes water-preservation in mining areas, coal mining under buildings with bed separation spaces grouted to retard surface subsidence, partial extraction and backfill mining, simultaneous extraction of coal and coal-bed methane, coal roadway supporting and underground disposal of rock waste, underground coal gasification, etc.

The 2 360 t/h two module Phola coal preparation plant represents anew era of large plant in the Witbank coalfield designed to extend its life to 2020 and beyond. The plant uses the optimum processing model for Witbank coals, receiving a feed coal size of -50 mm, wet screening it into coarse and small coal fractions 50 x12 and 12 x0.63 mm before processing them in parallel through two primary DM cyclone sections, in order to make a 27.5 MJ/kg export floats product. The sinks are processed through a common high density DM cyclone section to produce a 21.5?23 MJ/kg thermal coal middlings product. The plant design incorporates the largest size DMS equipment used to date in South African coal preparation plants, i.e. 1 150 mm large diameter pump fed DM cyclones and 4.2 m width banana screens. The fine coal is conventionally processed by spirals, whereas the raw coal slimes are filtered using automated plate and frame filter presses and added to either the middlings or discards depending on its quality. The paper describes the database, innovative design concepts, construction, and commissioning.

Conventional augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles were introduced into the New York City area as a result of the damage to existing structures caused by pile driving operations. ACIP piles are often specified where deep foundations are to be installed adjacent to transit facilities, sensitive underground utilities or in close proximity to existing structures. However, loss-of-ground issues associated with the installation of ACIP piles have prevented the wide-scale use of these systems. Beginning in 2002, Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. began using its augered, cast-in-place displacement (ACIPD) system in the New York City area. Like conventional ACIP piles, this system produces almost no vibration. Also, as almost no material is brought to the surface, there is no opportunity for loss of ground. This paper presents a description of Berkel's displacement pile system and a brief discussion of six projects in the New York City area that have been executed with this system over the past two years.

OPTICAL PROPERTIES of U.S. coals of differing rank have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines, for about 20 years. These investigations have been remade to further the development of an objective basis for petrographic analysis of coal and to add to knowledge of the structure and composition of coal and coal components by determining their optical constants in various regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Various experimental techniques have been used in these studies, including determination of reflectance from bulk specimens and transmittance of thin and ultrathin sections, interferometry, electron microscopy, and election diffraction. Similar studies leave also been made of graphite, the end product of coal metamorphism. The bureau of Mines conducted the first U.S. investigation of reflectance properties of coal components, laying the foundation for petrographic analysis based on arbitrary reflectance classes and for automated reflectance analysis of coals. Optical constants of coals of differing rank and of graphite have been determined in the ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrum. Maxima in the optical constants of graphite were observed in the ultraviolet region and were interpreted to be related to transitions of electrons between the valence and conduction bands. Similar maxima for coals, especially high-rank coals, appeared to be characteristic of the presence of graphitelike layers. A special application of optical theory to absorbing, anisotropic materials like graphite and high-rank coals has been developed. Electron microscopic and electron diffraction studies of coals have revealed various ultrafine structures in coal components and have shown the evolution of an oriented, crystalline graphite structure in high-rank coals.

The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. The Courtland-Gleeson area is in Cochise County about 15 miles east of Tombstone in southeastern Arizona. Rocks exposed in the area range in age from Pre-cambrian to Quaternary. The Precambrian is repre-sented by the Pinal schist. Paleozoic rocks include the Cambrian Bolsa quartzite and Abrigo limestone, Mississippian Escabrosa limestone, and the Permo-Carboniferous Naco Group limestones. Rocks believed to be of Triassic and/or Jurassic age include the Copper Belle monzonite porphyry, Turquoise granite, and Gleeson quartz monzonite. The Cretaceous is represented by andesitic volcanics and various sedimentary rocks. Tertiary rocks include the intrusive and extrusive Sugarloaf quartz latite porphyry and numerous dikes of various rock types. Quaternary conglomerates cover the northern and eastern part of the area. The geologic structure is extremely complex. All rocks as old as early Tertiary have been involved in either tilting, normal faulting, high angle reverse faulting, imbricate thrusting or folding and overfold-ing. Major deformation was initiated during the first half of the Tertiary. Northeast-southwest compres-sional forces caused thrust plates containing lower Paleozoic rocks to override Cretaceous rocks. Subsequently, two large slide blocks of lower Paleozoic rocks, acting under the influence of gravity, moved eastward. The imbricate structure and the gravity slide blocks were then broken by late Tertiary normal faults. INTRODUCTION The Courtland-Gleeson area, or Turquoise Mining District, has long been recognized as an area of extreme structural complexity. Gilluly 2 referred to the entire district as a "gigantic thrust breccia". In 1962, Bear Creek Mining Company completed a two year program of detailed geologic mapping supported by exploration drilling. The purpose of this paper is to present some of the results of this investigation and to provide a structural interpretation based on these results. The geologic map that accompanies this report is generalized and shows only the major and significant features. The area was initially mapped on aerial photographs on a scale of 1 in. equals approximately 500 ft. These data were transferred to a planimetric base using a vertical sketch master. LOCATION The Courtland-Gleeson area is in central Cochise County, about fifteen miles east of Tombstone, and about twenty-two miles northeast of Bisbee in southeastern Arizona (Fig. 1). The area is readily accessible over graded gravel roads from both Tombstone and Elfrida. GENERAL GEOLOGY Rocks exposed in the area range in age from Pre-cambrian to Quaternary. wilson3 and Gilluly2 have published very detailed descriptions of the principal rock units exposed in the area. Only a summary description is provided in Table I. A great number of previously unmapped narrow Tertiary dikes and small irregular masses of hornblende andesite porphyry, lamprophyre, and aplite intrude the Gleeson quartz monzonite in the western part of the map area. The scale of the map prohibits showing them. The aplite dikes are related to, and bear the same structural relationships as, the Sugarloaf quartz latite dikes found in this area. For that reason, and because both the hornblende andesite porphyry and the lamprophyre are post-mineral and post-thrusting, their omission from the map is not considered significant. Because so many of the contacts in the district are fault contacts, because bedding faults appear to be prevalent but are difficult to recognize and map, and because igneous intrusions are so common throughout the sedimentary section, it is virtually impossible to measure an exact total thickness of any of the sedimentary rock units. Nevertheless, neither the field mapping program nor the diamond drilling provided any basis for suspecting that the thicknesses of the sedimentary units are significantly greater or less than what might be inferred from surrounding districts.

Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process.
