The article illustrates the Hydromill technology, as applied in urban sites, and its advantages in terms of quality of the end product, mitigation of the construction impact, and optimization of the logistics at the site. Also highlighted are the main features of the excavation equipment and slurry treatment plant. Two recent urban applications of this technology in Europe are briefly described, together with the forthcoming application to the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston. Introduction The Hydromill technology has been used extensively in Europe in the last decade for slurry wall construction in urban environments. In Italy, this technology has been applied by Ing. Giovanni Rodio & C., Impresa Costruzioni Speciali S.p.A. in two large projects. The first project is the construction of Stations Darsena and San Giorgio of the first metro line in Genova. The second project is the "Cut-and Cover" tunnel for the railway link in Torino. Hydromill technology will be used for the construction of the Soldier Pile Tremie Concrete walls of the Boston Central Artery Tunnel Project, contract C14C2, Utility Relocation at Fulton Street.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Tech (Engineering Metallurgy) degree This investigation relates to a multi-purpose electrolytic system. Its primary purpose is to electrowin gold from high or low concentration gold cyanide solutions and/or from gold sludge, and to convert the recovered gold into a gold (alloy) electroform or electrode at the gold mine itself. These operations are carried out sequentially and in situ in the same electrolytic cell. Electrorefining of the gold recovered may also be done in the cell. The system applies to silver as well, and may be adaptable to base and platinum group metals. It could also be used in environmental applications, to remove undesirable metals present in aqueous solution at very low concentration. The work to be discussed forms part of recently filed patent applications. Subsequent and future developments of the system are briefly outlined. The rate of dissolution of solid MgO-C and doloma into liquid in CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO slag at different temperatures was studied under conditions of forced convection by rotating cylindrical refractory specimens in a stationary crucible containing the molten slag. The corrosion rate was calculated from the change in diameter of the cylindrical specimens. Refractory specimens were 13 mm in diameter and 70 mm long. The specimens were rotated for15 to 120 minutes at speeds of 100 to 400 rpm in the molten slag. The rate of corrosion increased with temperature and with the rotating speed of the rod, and decreased when the slag was nearly saturated with MgO. The experimental results confirm the assumption that the diffusion of magnesium oxide through the slag phase boundary layer controls the corrosion process. The corrosion mechanism seems to be the dissolution of the refractory materials into the slag, followed by penetration of pores and grain boundaries and dispersion of the grains in the slag. The head loss caused by metallurgical sampling for slurry streams can be reduced by metallurgical sampler design. When the process volumetric flow rate is reduced by vertical static cutters before the sampling by an equal number of moving cutters to the static cutters, the installation requires less installation head space than other sampling arrangements and is easy to accommodate at suitable locations in the process. Low head loss reduces building costs for the processing plant and operational costs during the lifetime of the plant.The presence of a possible systematic bias in the particle size distribution, solids density and elemental composition between an Outotec MSA 2/50 metallurgical slurry sampler sample and MSA 2/50 manually sampled reject have been studied by a customer. The paired samples were taken as simultaneously as possible. The customer evaluated the possible bias using a paired t-test and provided the assay results to Outotec for further evaluation.The results of the paired t-test showed no systematic bias in particle size distribution, solid density or assayed analytes, except in one analyte with low content and a high relative error. The high relative error in one analyte may have been caused by the same calibration model used in a X-ray fluorescence analyser for both high elemental-content concentrate and very low elemental-content tailings samples. The sampled stream is the tailings of a previous process stage.The results of the t-test were studied further using analysis of variance to reveal the error sources in samples. The results showed no bias between the samples collected from the MSA 2/50 reject and composite samples collected of the MSA 2/50 sample stream. The courier online analyser data was also available for evaluation of representativeness to the process stream.The analysis results of the courier online analysis reveals no bias between the MSA 2/50 reject samples, MSA 2/50 sample stream composite samples and online analysis results during the comparative sample collection period.CITATION:Loimi, J, Minkkinen, P and Korpela, T, 2017. Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

ThERE are several reports in the literature which indicate that both solid-solution hydrogen and hydride precipitates can promote low-temperature em-brittlement of tantalum.1-3 For example, Imgram et al.2 showed that hydrogen additions in the range of 140 to 580 ppm promoted a ductile-to-brittle transition at slightly above room temperature in both wrought and recrystallized tantalum. This contrasts with the observation that tantalum of norma1 purity is very ductile, even at liquid-nitrogen temperature. Imgram et al. also found that hydrogen additions caused a deterioration of notch tensile properties of tantalum. The purpose of this communication is to present some limited evidence that hydrogen can also cause fatigue embrittlement of tantalum. The material used in this investigation was wrought, stress-relieved (1000°C, 1 hr), are-melted tantalum rod (5/8-in. diameter) containing the following impurities in weight percent: 0.005 C, 0.007 02, 0.0005 H2, 0.003 N2, 0.08 Cb, 0.01 W, and 0.01 Fe. Hydrogen charging was done in an atmosphere of flowing dry hydrogen for 3 hr at 600°C, followed by an homogenizing anneal in purified argon for 15 min at 600°C, and cooling in an argon atmosphere. Typical micro-structures of the hydrogen-free and the hydrogen-charged materials are shown in Fig. 1(a) and Fig. 1(b), respectively. Fig. 1(b) shows the appearance of hydride precipitates which, in many cases, formed preferentially parallel to the rod axis. The hydride dispersion was uniform across the diameter of the specimen. The fact that the precipitate was a tantalum hydride was tentatively confirmed by X-ray diffraction on a metallographically prepared surface. After hydrogen charging, chemical analyses by vacuum fusion revealed the hydrogen content to be 0.0295 wt pct. In addition, the oxygen and nitrogen contents were slightly raised to 0.0095 O2 and 0.005 N2.

This research was part of an effort to investigate means of reestablishing non¬polluted hydrological systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. Chemically undesirable overburden material was selectively backfilled with the intent that it would be below the future root zone, be above the reestablished aquifer, and would not be leached as a result of deep percolation. After 2 years the buried material remains above the spoil aquifer and below the maximum rooting depth. Unsaturated water flow from the land surface to the buried material occurred during wet climatological periods. No significant leaching of buried material was observed, however. Overburden sample contamination from drill stem joint grease with Pb, Zn, and Cu additives caused substantial error regarding DTPA extractable trace metals. A grease with teflon and talc additives was recommended for use in future sampling programs. DTPA extractable trace elements in overburden material had no statistical relationship to post-mine ground-water quality. Overburden columns leached with water produced leachates comparable to overburden and spoil ground-water trace metal quality. A depositional model described the Rosebud Coal overburden as a fluvial system with distinct units of sand, silt, and clay, with distinct chemical properties. Physical and chemical characteristics of the model were comparable to the in situ geochemical system, a relationship which may aid in locating overburden materials unsuitable for reclamation.

The depth of underground mines has been increasing due to several factors, such as material demand growth and improving technology. It is a challenge to understand severe failure mechanisms such as spalling, which is caused by induced high stress. To investigate this failure mechanism under high stress conditions, intact rock blocks with small size tunnel were tested at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). The range of rocks, such as sandstone and granite, were drilled (200 mm hole) and tested using a servo-controlled 450 t capacity INSTRON machine. The acoustic emission sensors were attached to the block mass during the experiment to investigate the seismic response prior to spalling failure. The effect of the ground support system towards the failure was also examined by comparing the seismic response of the various ground support schemes.CITATION:Kusui, A and Villaescusa, E, 2016. Seismic events and pillar failures observed in two platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, South Africa, were investigated. We studied the sources of approximately 300 largest seismic events recorded in 2009. Moment tensors of these events were estimated from amplitudes and polarities of P- and S-waves. The inverted mechanisms contain isotropic implosive components in many instances. Analyses of uncertainty of the moment tensor solutions confirmed the significance of the implosive component in general. Several documented cases of pillar failure were considered in detail. For each of these a seismic moment tensor was calculated from an elastic stress model assuming an instant removal of a failed pillar. The geometries and magnitudes of the theoretical seismic moment tensors are in agreement with the observed (i.e. inverted from seismic data). The results indicate that either pillar failure or fracturing in the proximity of the reef (within a fraction of the dominant wavelength of seismic waves) are responsible for a significant portion of the large events recorded in these mines.

Silver is one of the three major metals produced from the Broken Hill mines. The accurate determination of the silver in these ores, therefore, is of economic importance.With due appreciation of the divergence of opinion of many who are interested in the subject of the determination of silver, the writer has been prompted to present the results of some recent experiments on silver losses during cupellation and conclusions from these experiments in the present paper. The losses of silver in the fire assay for this metal are due to silver retained in the slag during the fusion or scorification of the ore, and to silver volatilized from, and absorbed by the cupel during the process of cupellation.The literature describing the results of experimental work on silver losses due to the above causes is extensive, and the general conclusion of these experiments is that the silver lost in the slag is small, but that lost by cupellation is larger and more variable.The term cupellation loss in this paper refers to the total cupellation loss, no distinction being made between the absorption and volatilization losses.Volatilization loss is shown by King to be 0.5% of the total cupellation loss and, as it is generally accepted among assayers as being only a small fraction of the cupellation loss (3) (5), it will not receive further consideration in this paper.The factors causing the loss of silver by cupellation and the precautions to be obs~rved to reduce the loss in this operation are described in (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5). "Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The Mississippi Valley-type deposits occur in massive, homogeneous dolostones from which diagenesis has obliterated all primary sedimentary structures. The mineralisation forms irregular, lens-shaped stratabound bodies, mostly in the lower part of the dolostones. They are composed exclusively of sphalerite, galena, pyrite, marcasite and barite, with white sparry dolomite a common cementing phase. Mineral zoning can be recognised from pyrite and marcasite in the east to barite in the west. Sphalerite, the most common sulphide, occurs basically as colloform and banded crusts and galena as isolated cubic or skeletal crystals, mainly in the centre of the banded botryoidal sphalerite. The combined observations of the deposits' geology, geochemistry and ore petrology suggest a three-stage genetic model: carbonate sedimentation in a shallow-water environment; dolomitisation, probably after compaction, by fluids of connate origin and lateral evolution; and mineralisation by migrating solutions, perhaps related to oil-field brines, that originated in deep zones of the basin during diagenesis of the basinal mudrocks in the NE"

The recent paper by Bain (1981) contains an unfortunate, and potentially misleading typographic error. On page 9, second paragraph, Bain states that, "some samples of drill core from the (Candlow) Formation ... contain up to 90 ppm gold and 2 000 ppm arsenic". The gold value should read 90 ppb. In fact, in the original version of the paper (Bain, 1980), the gold value quoted was actually 60 ppb.Bain also refers briefly to some geochemical data which is attributed to me, and which I feel require some clarification.In addition, the paper contains some factual errors relating to the occurrence of carbonate and potential host rocks to Carlin-type gold deposits in the Candlow Formation.

The use of drilling rigs to increasingly mechanize stope drilling has been acknowledged as important for the S.A. mining industry in it ís efforts to tackle the challenges of low productivity, AIDS and an ageing driller workforce. The spin-offs of increased safety, cost-effectiveness and better mining performance provide advantages to all?from the driller to the shareholder. However, implementation or product rollout has varied from outright success to dismal failure. A study of various cases by Novatek and Anglogold TDS showed clear reasons for these differences. Whereas the successes were characterized by clear objectives, accountability, user buy-in, a commitment to make the technology work and no-nonsense reporting, these were typically absent in failed implementations. The attitude at unsuccessful mines was to ?trial? the equipment?even subconsciously, a ?trial? is a test where failure becomes an acceptable outcome. During the study it became clear that mining management are not adequately trained to manage the often-tricky rollout process. They are often also not empowered or clearly mandated to deal with the organizational, human and technical issues that must dovetail to create a success. The output of the study was to develop a basic rollout process that could be used to formally manage the implementation of new drilling technology. Creating an alignment between the mine, workforce and supplier promotes a win-win situation that will not otherwise spontaneously arise.

X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy used for the analysis of mill samples results in improved control of flotation concentrators.Techniques and equipment for sampling pulp streams, filtration and drying, grinding, briquetting and X-ray fluorescence analysis of samples have been developed.The current methods in use permit the analysis for lead and zinc in six pulp samples within 30 min total elapsed from the start of sampling. The X-ray method gives a precision at least equal to the former routine wet-way assay methods.The equipment is used also for pilot plant control, as a means of solving complicated analytical problems and in the rapid qualitative analysis of exploration samples.INTRODUCTIONIn milling and concentrating operations, classical methods for the assay of lead and zinc have been mainly of use for accounting purposes and for the post-mortem examination of plant operations, but have been of little value for rapid mill control. Where attempts have been made to apply these methods to control assaying, it has been necessary to modify the procedures and introduce short cuts which have tended to reduce their reliability.Even with these shortened procedures, the time taken to obtain a limited amount of information rendered them of little value for the control of milling operations where sudden, large fluctuations can occur. In recent years, a number of new and rapid analytical techniques, based on physical rather than chemical principles, have been introduced.These include direct reading emission spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic absorptionspectroscopy.

This paper considers the application of recent laboratory gas sorption data to the understanding outburst phenomena in underground coal mining. Previous use of threshold limits based on gas content and coal rank are placed in perspective. Although this work focuses on overseas research and experience, parallels can be drawn for New Zealand coal settings, taking into account localised mining and geological factors.

The 26th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 15 through 19, 2003, in Arequipa. The convention was sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru). The Institute has been organizing these events since 1954. They are now held every other year. The conventions spotlight Peru’s mineral resources and have contributed to the tremendous growth of the Peruvian mining industry. This year’s meeting consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. It was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. More than 3,000 mining professionals attended. As always, the meeting was well organized, and participants expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for another successful meeting.

The WESTFALIA group of companies developer and manufactures underground mining machinery for complete high-performance longwalls. WESTFALIA uses a state of the art electrohydraulic system as the most important component for the realisation of today's fully automated plow or shearer longwall. The shield control unit (SCU) allows maximum custom designed software flexiblity as well as maximum hardware reliability. The master control unit (MCU) monitors shield support data as well as the plow/shearer position. By using an industry standard PC in an explosion-proof box with an intransically safe keyboard nearly unlimited software capabilities can be obtained with inexpensive hardware. Among various other modes of operation this MCU allows the monitoring and recording of data which can be transmitted to a surface computer. Production and operational adjustments can be made by the mine management based on the MCU information. Statistical analysis of the distribution of roof pressure under various conditions is also possible. The WESTFALIA automation system PM-4 gives the operator maximum flexibility and helps the mine management to run their longwall more efficiently and safely.
