TRANSFER to the Bureau of Mines of the responsibility for conservation and production of helium, and announcement that a proposal has been made to the President for commercial operation of the Los Angeles has attracted new attention to the helium program of the Government. The matter is one in which mining engineers, and the mining industry in general, have a peculiar interest. Helium is a byproduct of the petroleum and natural gas industry. It is found in certain of the natural gases which have themselves been discovered, in the main, in the search for oil. If it is to be produced on a large scale, the conservation and development of the fields will necessarily be done by the men of the oil and gas industry. There is no known or expected source of supply of quantities of commercial importance save in the natural gas fields. Not all gas wells supply helium and none of them supply it in important percentages. If it were necessary to prospect a field, develop it, lay pipe lines and build production plants for the helium alone, the cost would be prohibitive. On that basis helium would necessarily be restricted to essential war uses, where cost is subordinate to need. As a byproduct of the natural gas in certain, at least, of the fields in the United States there is distinct reason for anticipating that it may be produced in amounts and at a cost that will permit its regular use in commercial airships.

Iron ore deposits in south-central Missouri have emerged as a possible resource for the rare-earth elements. The Pea Ridge Iron Mine is one such deposit. Rare-earth minerals at the Pea Ridge Iron Mine are contained in breccia pipes consisting primarily of silicon oxides and feldspars. These pipes extend up through the magnetite ore body and appear to be alterations and replacement of earlier hematite. The mineralogy of these pipes is very complex and varied, which could complicate the concentration and extraction of the rare-earth minerals. This U.S. Bureau of Mines !eport represents a study by characterization of the mineral phases to assess the amenability and development of concentration and extraction techniques. Previous characterization of rare-earth minerals has been mainly by transmitted light microscopy. This method along with reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction was used to identify and characterize the rare-earth and associated minerals. The minerals identified were the major ore minerals, magnetite and hematite; the rare-earth phosphates, monazite and xenotime; the rare-earth silicate, allanite; the minor associated minerals, cassiterite, pyrite, and apatite; and the gangue minerals, feldspar, quartz, and actinolite.

"By compiling geological, structural, geophysical, and geochemical information into a 3D geological model, we evaluated the orogenic gold potential in the vicinity of a hidden segment of an important Archean fault zone, the Cadillac-Larder Lake fault (CLLF) in the region of Rouyn-Noranda. The segment of CLLF in the present study is partly covered by Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. Because more than 2000 t Au have been extracted along the CLLF to date, our objective is to evaluate the gold potential at depth along a poorly known segment of this fault. A 3D geological model (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) including the covered segment was built through the compilation and homogenization of available geological data and the construction of 23 cross sections. The geology under the Proterozoic cover was evaluated using geophysical inversions, drill holes (42 in total), and surrounding geology. All available assays were filtered and upscaled to a 250 m × 250 m × 250 m regular cell grid to determine and quantify spatial relationships between geological features and mineralized occurrences using the weights of evidence method. Structural features, such as E-W-trending faults and fault intersections, and certain lithologies with a high primary porosity such as volcanoclastic rocks of the Blake River Group and Timiskaming sedimentary rocks, proved to be very prospective, yielding favourable factors with a weight of evidence index W+ > 0.24. These salient features were then assigned a combination index for ultimately evaluating the orogenic gold potential under the sedimentary cover. The zones resulting in an optimization of exploration targeting were attributed the highest probability, representing ~1% of the initial volume. La compilation des données géologiques, géophysiques, structurales, et géochimiques et leur intégration au sein d’un modèle géologique 3D a permis d’évaluer le potentiel aurifère dans les environs d’une importante zone de faille archéenne sous couverture protérozoïque. Cette méthodologie a été développée en utilisant le cas de la Faille Cadillac-Larder Lake (FCLL) dans la région de Rouyn-Noranda. Puisque plus de 2000 t d’Or ont été extrait à proximité de la FCLL, l’objectifs des travaux est l’évaluation du potentiel aurifère en profondeur de ce segment. Un modèle géologique 3D (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) incluant le segment sous couverture de la FCLL a été construit en utilisant l’ensemble des données géologiques disponibles et 23 coupes géologiques. La géologie du socle archéen sous la couverture protérozoïque a été interprétée avec des inversions géophysiques, des forages (42 au total) et les contacts géologiques exposés. Les teneurs aurifères dans le secteur ont été filtrées et ajusté à une grille régulière de 250 m × 250 m × 250 m afin d’évaluer et de quantifier les relations spatiales existantes entre certaines entités géologiques et les emplacements minéralisés en utilisant la méthode du poids de la preuve. Les failles de direction Est-Ouest, les intersections de failles ainsi que certaines lithologies possédant une porosité primaire importantes comme les certains tuf du Groupe de Blake River et les sédiments du Timiskaming se sont montrés très prospectifs avec des valeurs de W+ > 0.24. Ces entités géologiques ont ensuite été utilisées par le biais d’un indice de combinaison pour évaluer le potentiel en or de type orogénique sous le couvert sédimentaire. Cette méthodologie permet une optimisation des campagnes d’exploration puisque les zones pour lesquelles la probabilité de minéralisations a été évaluée à la plus haute valeur représentent 1% du volume initial."

Stability condition of underground excavations have to be assessed to guarantee safe operations within the quarrying working areas. This objective requires a reliable assessment of the rock mass natural state of stress and of the stress redistribution induced by the excavations. This goal is often complicated by difficult geological conditions induced by tectonic stresses, complex topographies and large and irregular excavation geometries. Consequently, the acting state of stress needs to be measured by specific in situ measurement devices. This work refers on an in situ measurements campaign carried out by CSIRO tests in an underground quarry located in the Carrara marble basin. The difficult path carried out for interpretation of the measurements is described in this paper. In particular, the numerical modeling performed using the Boundary Element Method (BEM) first, to study the influence of both surface topography and excavation geometry and then the Distinct Element Method (DEM) to evaluate the influence of rock discontinuities in the measurement zone are illustrated in this work. Parametrical analysis of the rock mass mechanical features is also described in order to calibrate the numerical models and analyze the experimental results. The work has been carried out trough several phases, which are: characterization of the rock mass through geostructural surveys: this allowed us to classify the rock mass and determine the mechanical and physical parameters necessary for modeling; on-site measurement of stress levels through the application of over coring techniques; numerical analyses for the simulation of excavation phases, using the Examine3D (BEM) engineering analysis code. comparison between the measured stress levels and those numerically calculated and subsequent calibration of the BEM model; Numerical model of the forecasted excavation based on the calibrated (BEM) model.

"This paper describes the modifications made to the Fox Mine copper concentrate bin in order to obtain a continuous flow condition. The design of these modifications is based on test results obtained on Fox Mine concentrate using the flow factor testing machine in the research facilities of Cominco at Trail, B.C.The original design consisted of a cylindrical steel bin on a concrete slab with two slot-discharge openings. Based on predictions of the maximum mass flow hopper angle for conical and wedge shaped hoppers for the concentrate on various potential bin lining materials, Ultra-High Molecular Weight (UHMW) Polymer was selected as a liner.Using the recommended angles for conical and wedge shaped hoppers, the profile of the bin base was changed to suit the existing slot openings.The initial method of fastening the liner resulted in failure of the connections. Subsequent modification to the zinc concentrate bin fastener system proved satisfactory and it has now been in operation for over one year without any separation of the lining material.Utilization of flow testing procedures on concentrate samples has demonstrated that proper design of storage bins or hoppers to achieve continuous flow can be incorporated into the design of new plants."

"Gasification is a process of thermal conversion of solid carbonaceous materials into a gaseous fuel called syngas. Coal gasification is an efficient technology for a range of systems for producing low-emission electricity and other high-value products such as chemicals, synthetic fuels, etc.The paper presents the High-Temperature Winkler (HTW) gasification process, which is designed to utilize low-rank feedstock such as coals with high ash content, lignite, biomass etc. The process is characterized by a bubbling fluidized bed, where coal devolatilization and partial oxidation and gasification of coal char and volatiles take place, and by a freeboard where partial combustion and gasification of coal char take place.The recent development of the high-pressure HTW process is reviewed. Gasification of low-rank, high-ash coals with respect to gasification temperatures, conversion rates, and syngas quality is also discussed. The main HTW design steps required for an industrial-scale design are presented. Special attention is given to the process modelling, including global thermodynamic calculation as well as detailed CFD-based simulation of a reacting fluidized bed. Three-dimensional numerical results of the HTW process are also provided and discussed."

"INTRODUCTION During September, October, and November 1946 the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines, off' the United States Department of the Interior, Pittsburgh, Pa., tested four new types of self-contained breathing apparatus and approved them in accordance with Schedule 13C. Approval was granted with the proviso that certain specifications outlined on the approval plate be made fully effective, and with the understanding that established safe practices in training in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus are of major importance.The excellent records made during the past 30 years in the safe use of self-contained breathing apparatus, some of which required the almost continuous wearing of apparatus during several hours daily for days, weeks, or months, may be attributed largely to the Bureau's system of rescue organizations, selection of physically fit rescue workers, effective training, and educational work done in rescue and recovery operations during fires or following disasters and in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus. Loss of life during wearing of breathing apparatus was due almost invariably to poorly assembled or otherwise defective apparatus, poor physical condition of the wearer, or insufficient training or some incorrect procedure.The newly developed breathing apparatus are of much simpler design than the conventional type used for the past several years; however, it is just as important to select rescue crews carefully and to train them properly in the care, use, and limitations of the new types of apparatus as for the older long-established types, if anything like safety is to be achieved in using them. The Bureau of Mines considers that 1/2-hour and 3/4-hour self-contained breathing apparatus should be used only as auxiliary equipment in mine rescue and recovery work, and their capabilities and limitations should be well understood by those who wear them."

Crushing and grinding account for the major portion (60 to 80 percent) of the overall expenses for ore processing. Autogenous (AG) and semiautogenous grinding (SAG) have been considered a step forward in comparison to conventional grinding circuits with several stages of crushing and using ball (and/or rod) grinding mills (Bassarear, 1982, MacPherson, 1989, Pithois, Casalis, 1983, Maripuu et al., 1983). However, there remains room for improvement to existing AG and SAG technologies and both technologies have immense economic benefit potential. Experience gained by the Technics & Technologies of Disintegration Ltd. (TTD) in the research of grinding processes shows that grinding in AG and SAG mills can be performed in a more effective way. The company's approach comprises the following elements: ? Novel mill design. ? New liners and lifters. ? Novel discharge grid design. ? Technique of treating material of critical particle size. Comparative tests that demonstrated the usefulness of these innovations are described in this article. Currently, there are hundreds of AG and SAG mills in operation throughout the world. Application of new internal elements of the mills and reconsideration of the circuit design of the existing grinding equipment using present technological solutions would significantly increase the throughput rate and diminish power requirement.

The marble deposits of Yule Creek were first discovered in the late1870s. Minor quarrying occurred between that discovery and the early 1900s. Major development occurred in 1905, when Channing Meek, with some help from the Rockefellers, raised $3 million to develop the Colorado Yule Marble Quarry. That is $50 million in today’s dollars. Some of the words used to describe the marble deposit were “gigantic, remarkable, flawless and immense.” Boosters proclaimed, “The marble age is here.” Obviously, dreams were big for Marble.

Rroundtable 2009, a Knight Piésold and Co.-hosted roundtable discussion on mine closure and cover design was held at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV on Feb. 12, 2009. Knight Piésold?s Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce, as well as Knight Piésold representatives Cynthia Parnow and Corey Conrad from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from the Tucson, AZ office were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to approximately three-dozen attendees from four states. Attendees included personnel from seven mining properties and attendees from corporate offices. The majority of attendees were people directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Other attendees were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus. The purpose of Roundtable 2009 was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to mine closure and cover design associated with almost any aspect of a mining operation. This type of forum provides a less inhibited format for discussion, when compared with traditional conferences and symposia. In the roundtable format, lively discussions are encouraged. This discussion was the fourth in the series of Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to heap leach pad design, construction and operation; design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities and site-wide water considerations. Resource estimation is the science of determining the amount and quality of a given material in the ground that has the potential to be mined at a profit. This is because during this time computers have become more widely available and more powerful and software packages have become more comprehensive and user friendly. Over the past three years The Mining Geology Company with the support from Vinacomin Group has developed the Coal Geological Modelling and Reserve Estimation ? VMG system. The VMG system enables the geological and mining engineer to start at the reserve estimation for the mine design and planning. The VMG system enables the national and international standards (NI43-101, CIM-Canada; SAMREC Code, Africa, and JORC Code, Australia) and user friendly with menu driven thereby permitting the engineer with minimal computer training to rapidly learn and utilize the system. Geological and mining data input through digitized map files and drill-holes information files stored in the database that is an integral part of the VMG system with the main function for collection, validation, and recording, storing and processing of data will include both ?primary? (observation and measurement) and ?interpreted? data. It is recommend that data be stored digitally, using a documented, standard format and a reliable storage medium that allows for easy and complete retrieval of the data. The coal reserve estimation through standard polygon methods with the increased use of these mathematical techniques (geometrical modelling, geostatistical method, least square method, ?) over the last ten years corresponds, to some degree, to a decrease in both the amount of the coal deposit mapping and, in particular, coal seam structural interpretation and modelling, and permit rapidly evaluation of coal seam and overburden quality and quantity. The understanding of the relationship between the coal mineralization of interest and the likely related complicate geological processes and structure that govern its emplacement and geometry within the geological framework is essential to the establishment of the geological controls for coal mineralization. System outputs includes: drillholes summary reports, stratigraphy, cross-sections, isopach maps, structure, contour maps, premining and post mining topography maps, and 3D perspective view on coal seam structure.

In the Santa Eulalia mining district, Chihuahua, Mexico, the main mineral zone occurs in a gently warped dome with simple associated structures and contains orebodies distributed through a vertical range of over 900 m. The stratigraphy of 1945 m of geologic column is described and an abrupt shrinkage is documented in the volume of limestones immediately associated with large orebodies. Termed collapse, this shrinkage occurred during the course of mineralization. Contacts of limestone with igneous sills, and 366 m of fossiliferous limestone beds, particularly the main fossil bed, have been important localizers of ore-bodies. Up-dip gravitational controls may have been important. Fractures have exerted only local controls and over short distances. Thrust zones have displaced diabase sills and in turn have been intruded by upper members of a group of rhyolite porphyry sills. Mineralizers were related to the rhyolite porphyry, and ore has been introduced to the limestone where certain sills lie between the displaced segments of diabase and have been cut by north-south fissures. Speculations are raised that fields of unreleased strain may have influenced orebody locations; the district's zoning pattern may be a reflection of the filtering effects of large volumes of limestone; and that metal-rich brines mobilized by or incorporated within the invading porphyry might be the source of the mineralizers. PRODUCTION AND LOCATION The Santa Eulalia district has a production record approaching or exceeding 35 million tons of silver-lead-zinc ore from replacement bodies in limestone. In operation since the first years of the 17001s, production has been confined to two intensely mineralized areas separated by 2 km of barren limestone, the West Camp and the East Camp. Probably 50% has been mined since 1908, with over 90% from the West Camp. The West Camp, exploited through a vertical depth of 1945 m and now approaching exhaustion, is the subject of this paper. The district lies in the northern part of the Santa Eulalia Mountains in central Chihuahua in northern Mexico, 400 km south of El Paso, Texas, and 22 km southeast of Chihuahua City. Dominating the northern part of the range is the Cerro de Santa Eulalia, a broad rolling upland which contains the district's West and East Camps. The West Camp, on the west side of the range, centers around the village of Santo Domingo, which is 2 km northeast of the Real de Santa Eulalia (Fig. 1). REGIONAL GEOLOGY Thick-bedded middle Cretaceous limestones, probably Aurora, form the great bulk of the Cerro de Santa Eulalia. From Sept. 22-24, the Las Vegas Convention Center will be home to MinExpo 2008, the world?s largest mining equipment show that comes along once every four years. Sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), this year?s show is on pace to be the largest ever. Nearly 1,300 exhibitors have purchased nearly 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of booth space. At the center of it all will be some of the most impressive mining equipment that the industry has to offer. And in the shadows of the massive haul trucks, drill rigs and bulldozers, attendees will be able to see the latest and greatest products including hand tools; the latest in automation and robotics; safety and communications equipment; longwall mining equipment; engines and parts; materials handling and processing equipment and services; pollution control equipment; reclamation equipment and services; computer applications; consulting and financial services and more. While many companies will be on hand to display the tried and true, there will also be plenty of new things to see. ?We anticipate that a whole range of new products will be introduced at the show,? the NMA said of the show that has been called the world?s richest deposit of mining technology, services and products. In addition to the show that will take place in Center Hall and North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, MinExpo 2008 includes a conference program with 20 educational sessions that will tackle the most timely and pressing issues affecting the mining industry. The Tabriz-Urmiyeh Highway shortens the distance of north-western cities of Iran by about 130 km, resulting in improved access and efficient transit between Iran and Europe through Turkey. The highway crosses the Urmiyeh Lake, an inland lake surrounded by mountains. Due to the circulation of salt-water in the lake and the necessity to continue shipping between adjacent ports, a waterway should be kept open. Consequently, a bridge was built to provide access of marine traffic. A causeway bridge had a length of 1,260 m, comprising of 19 spans. In construction of the bridge, more than 400 piles having a total length of 32 km have been driven. For design of piles different methods have been used such as static analysis, dynamic testing, and correlations to in situ tests, such as cone penetration test (CPT). This paper presents construction of bridge substructure, full-scale piling tests, and methods of analysis used in the evaluation of the deep foundation capacity. The presentation includes an assessment of four current direct CPT and one CPTu methods to calculate the bearing capacity of the piles. It was found that the CPTu and dynamic testing are two suitable tools for rapid and optimum pile design and verification.

During the 1980s and early 1990s low cost gold treatment plants were at the forefront of the Australian engineering and mineral processing business. This opportunity was the result of a high gold price and innovative design by emerging engineering companies in an expanding market. The low cost approach to gold plant design and project execution resulted in smaller and shorter life projects becoming viable and the multiplicity and fast track approach of the projects resulted in sharp learning curves. From the mid 1990s to the early 2000s the relatively low commodity prices and resultant reduction in minerals opportunities also resulted in innovative design in both small and large plants, albeit on a reduced scale. The innovation was associated with alleviating capital cost pressures for large capacity low-grade (eg NewcrestÆs Cadia) or small-scale (eg JubileeÆs Cosmos) projects to either improve NPV or to enable the project to be won and profitable in the competitive lump sum environment. Between 2004 and 2008 the engineering market became less competitive from an engineerÆs perspective due to the high demand for engineering services in a high price commodity market. The need for innovation remained but was driven overtly by shortages in water, power and personnel and long equipment lead times. This paper discusses some of the factors that contribute to the capital cost of a project and the scope for improving the likelihood of financing and increasing the project net present value (NPV). Case studies with recent large copper concentrator projects will be used to demonstrate how a value driven approach to project and plant layout can result in significant improvement in NPV.

"Rock properties have a material impact on mining processes, including drilling performance. An investigation using point loaded index (PLI) data converted to uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) has revealed that a direct relationship between grain size and UCS exists at Mogalakwena Mine. This correlation is best seen in unaltered rock, with lower correlations for altered rock types. Measurements from the new RockMa system installed on drill rigs can be used to obtain rock strength data to validate the current rock strength domains and create additional data for the next benches below. An investigation of penetration rates in different lithologies shows that rock composition plays an important role in determining drill performance. Additionally, there is an inverse relationship between rock strength and drilling penetration rate – a measure of how efficiently a hole is drilled.The domaining of grain-size-adjusted UCS at Mogalakwena Mine will allow more accurate scheduling of drill rigs through increased knowledge of rock strength in various areas. Successful rock strength domaining has the potential to be incorporated into blast indexing and predicting crushing/milling performance.IntroductionThe optimization of mining and processing through geometallurgical characterization of ore are key drivers of value realization (Deutch, 2013). Rock strength is one such property and is affected by, among other variables, composition, texture, and grain size (Ozturk, Nasuf, and Kahraman, 2014). Mogalakwena Mine is exploiting the intrusive Platreef PGE (platinum group element)-bearing orebody which forms part of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This complex orebody exhibits areas of metasomatic alteration, metamorphism, and sporadic mineralization of the footwall and hangingwall (Nex et al., 2006). Understanding this variability is paramount due to the implications for rock strength and hardness, which in turn affect crushing, milling, and liberation efficiency. These variables must be known prior to blasting in order to optimize mine and plant processes using in-situ variables. This necessitates predictive modelling (Deutch, 2013). Geological and geotechnical data was sourced from the Overysel (OY) exploration database for the study. Point load testing was done for each borehole and the results converted to uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) (Akram and Bakar, 2007). The relationship of lithology, texture, and grain size with UCS revealed an inverse relationship between grain size and UCS in unaltered rock. The relationship was not present in altered rock types. A comparison of mean strength and hardness results indicated that Bond work index and UCS may be related. Drilling performance is affected by UCS (Bourgoyne et al., 1986), and this was proven using recent measurements obtained during drilling. Lastly, grain-sizeadjusted UCS values were applied to a 3D model for the OY property."

The AusIMM/AMIC code for reporting Reserves seeks to improve the calibre of professional reporting on this subject. But have they gone far enough? Should the code appreciate that the degree of reliability of estimates required will vary with the type of mining planned? How does one "confirm continuity" as required by the code? The aim of optimum development drilling is to achieve appropriate ore zone definition for acceptable estimates of reserves and their economic extraction. Can this procedure be in conflict with the code? How does it affect finance decisions?

Specially designed X-ray machines are used extensively on diamond mines for the recovery of diamonds from ores. These machines are extremely expensive and, at present, there are no reliable methods of determining if the equipment is performing efficiently. The objective of this work was to manufacture translucent X-ray diamond simulants, which would emit varying but known luminescence signals when exposed to X-rays. These X-ray diamond simulants could then be used to determine the efficiency of diamond recovery operations.

The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Expressway Central Circular Route with a total length of approximately 47 km is located outside the Inner Circular Route of Tokyo (at a radius of approximately 8 km from the city center). Sections with a length of approximately26 km, slightly less than 60% of the total length, on the east and north sides are in ser-vice. Completing the Central Circular Route (Figure 1) is expected to enable through traffic concentrated at the city center to get around, and to form a well balanced trans-port network, which will alleviate traffic congestion considerably. The Central Circular Shinjuku Route, a section with a length of approximately 11 km on the west side, is now being constructed at a fast pace. The route is being built mainly by the shield tunneling method to carry out work smoothly under a trunk highway carrying heavy traffic and to reduce adverse effects of tunneling work on residents in the neighborhood. Shield tunnels have recently been becoming longer and deeper, and no secondary linings have been used in an increasing number of cases because of the over-crowding of cities or the reduction of budgets for public works. Economical, durable and high-quality segments have been required for linings of shield tunnels. Segments are made of concrete, steel, cast iron or combination thereof. Concrete segments are generally used in shield tunnels of medium to large diameter. Concrete segments are highly durable and resistant to compression, so they are highly resistant to earth pres-sure, water pressure and jack thrust. They are, however, heavy and have low tensile strength, so they are brittle and their corners are likely to spall. Concrete segments should therefore be handled carefully.[1] The authors have developed a steel fiber reinforced highly flowable concrete segment (referred as SFRC segment) that overcomes the weaknesses of concrete segments[2] to construct economical, durable and high-quality linings. SFRC segments have been applied to outbound sections SJ51 through SJ53 of the Central Circular Shinjuku Route. Unlike conventional concrete segments (referred as conventional RC segments), SFRC segments are made of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting highly flowable concrete. SFRC segments require less reinforcing bars than conventional RC segments because steel fibers are expected to work as reinforcements.
