Atlas Copco Wagner launched its ST1010 Scooptram load haul dumper. The ST1010 replaces the company’s Wagner ST-1000 Scooptram. The improvements to the Wagner ST1010 include increased reliability, ease of maintenance and driver comfort or ergonomics. The ST1010 has been redesigned and has added several new features and options not offered in the earlier model. These include anew boom design with side stops. Heavy reinforcements to the bogie offer better protection against the harsh working conditions in underground mining and tunneling. An auto lube system has also been added as has paint-on grip tread to reduce slips and falls during maintenance checks or repair work. Other features include a heavy-duty, auxiliary-fan motor, an isolated transverter, remote diagnostic pressure taps, a bolt-on battery box, raised air-intake, improved fuel-filter access for easier maintenance, larger wear-bars around the engine tub, and smaller, higher output batteries

Typically, large volumes of data are collected during geotechnical investigations for mining projects but rarely is this done in a comprehensive manner that enables all aspects of the geotechnical environment to be evaluated. A geotechnical core logging process has been developed to record mechanical and structural properties of the rock mass. The method enables data for a wide range of rock properties and geotechnically significant major structures to be collected including rock strength, joint surface condition, fracture frequency and fracture orientation. The logging method is unique in that sufficient data is collected to enable the independent determination of all the major rock mass classification systems including rock mass rating (RMR), (Bieniawski 1976, 1989; Laubscher, 1990) Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) tunnelling quality index (Q) (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) and geological strength index (GSI) (Hoek, Kaiser and Bawden, 1995). The logging system has been specifically developed to allow better and more precise appreciation of rock mass and structural conditions across the project area thereby optimising the use and application of the available geotechnical data and improving confidence in the outcomes of geotechnical investigations. BACKGROUND This paper discusses work performed as part the rehabilitation of the gravity flow section of the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) during an approximately two year period between 2004 and 2006. The goal of the project was to restore the gravity flow section of the NCA to optimal operating condition, extending the lifespan of this significant water supply for the New York City metropolitan area. Rehabilitation of the NCA was purposely scheduled before the completion of the new NCA Water Treatment Plant now under construction (Figure 1). The NCA is a 3.73 to 4.34 m (12.25 to 14.25 ft) diameter brick-lined circular andhorseshoe shaped water tunnel constructed between 1885 and 1891. The NCA conveys water for approximately 50 km (31 miles) by gravity and pressurized flow from the New Croton Reservoir in Westchester County, NY to distribution and reservoir points along its alignment, terminating at a distribution station at 135th Street and Convent Avenue in Manhattan, NY. Prominent features of the NCA include a large intake facility at New Croton Reservoir, 38.6 km (24 miles) of gravity flow horseshoe shaped aqueduct, 11.3 km (7 miles) of pressurized flow circular aqueduct, 2 siphons, and 36 open shafts and headhouse chambers which are used as sampling, access and blow-off locations. Until a partial inspection in 1982, the NCA had flowed continuously since its completion nearly 100 years prior. Flow tests have confirmed that the NCA can convey up to 12.7 m3/s (290 mgd) (Figure 2). Cover depths of NCA vary considerably, ranging from a few to hundreds of meters, typically of hard rock. Primarily mined using means conventional for the late1800s, construction of the NCA also employed cut and cover methods in several low-lying sections of the alignment, totaling approximately 1.6 km (1 mile). The NCA crosses through numerous lithologic changes, fault/shear zones and under several significant water bodies including the Pocantico, Saw Mill and Harlem Rivers and the Tarrytown Reservoir. The NCA passes under the Harlem River as a siphon at a depth of approximately 122 m (400 ft) below grade (Figure 3). Soon after construction the Aqueduct Commission Reports on the New Croton Aqueduct documented prominent defects such as large voids behind the lining. More recently, large-scale inspections of the gravity flow section performed during the 1990sand a 2004 inspection of portions of the pressurized sections of the NCA have revealed additional defects such as open and/or deteriorated masonry joints/cracks, leaks ranging from trickles to several liters per minute into and out of the NCA, missing bricks, formed openings, and in one place, a rupture through the liner with discernable

"Longwall abutment loads are influenced by several factors, including depth of cover, pillar sizes, panel dimensions, geological setting, mining height, proximity to gob, intersection type, and size of the gob. How does proximity to the gob affect pillar loading and entry condition? Does the gob influence depend on whether the abutment load is a forward, side, or rear loading? Do non-typical bleeder entry systems follow the traditional front and side abutment loading and extent concepts? If not, will an improved understanding of the combined abutment extent warrant a change in pillar design or standing support in bleeder entries?This paper details observations made in the non-typical bleeder entries of a moderate depth longwall panel; specifically, it explores data collected from borehole pressure cells and roof extensometers, observations of the conditions of the entries, and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall extraction. The primary focus was the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced due to the extraction of the longwall panels. Due to the layout of the longwall panels and bleeder entries, the borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and roof extensometers did not show much change due to the advancing of the first longwall. However, they did show a noticeable increase due to the second longwall advancement, a maximum of about 4 MPa of pressure increase and 5 mm of roof deformation. The observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the first longwall panel extraction began to when the second longwall panel had been advanced more than 915 meters. Localized pillar spalling was observed on the corners of the pillars closest to the longwall gob as was an increase in water in the entries. In addition to the observations and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to validate modeling procedures against the monitoring results and evaluate the bleeder design. ITASCA Consulting Group’s FLAC3D numerical modeling software was used to evaluate the bleeder entries. The results of the models indicated only a minor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall panels. These models showed a much greater increase in stress due to the development of the gateroad and bleeder entries—about 80% development and 20% longwall extraction. The FLAC3D model showed very good correlation between modeled and expected gateroad loading during panel extraction. The front and side abutment extent modeled was very similar to observations from this and previous panels."

A calculation programme of finite element method has been developed in order to study the behavior of excavation with sheet piling in soft clay. Based on a series of isotropically consolidated-undrained tests (CIU) on Hangzhou clay a linear relationship between the normalized initial tangent modulus number, E1, and stress-path parameter, a, is found for four different stress paths, and stress-path dependent modulus equations derived. Meanwhile, several influence factors, such as embedment depth and stiffness of the wall and soil conditions, were taken into consideration in the programme. Some valuable conclusions were obtained. Finally, a case history was studied by the proposed method of calculation. The result of calculation and the field observation are in good agreement.

ON mineral lease 38 of the Sulphide Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, a shaft was sunk in the early days Ior prospecting purposes and at the present time it is accessible as far as the 1000-ft. level where a connexion exists with the main workings of the Corporation's Central Mine, mineral lease 9. About the year 1895· a crosscut was driven east from this shaft at the 1330-ft. level cutting the Central Ore-body in mineral lease 9 and the shaft is supposed to extend a further depth of 25 ft; but no records of any of this work are in existence, the whole of the evidence being based on hearsay and memory:Fig. 1 shows the position of the Extended shaft in relation to the main workings. Komatsu America International has introduced two new hydraulic excavators. They can work in congested and confined areas. The tight tail swing radius of the PC128US-2 and PC22-8USLC-2 enables the excavators to minimize the work space. The units can operate in confined work settings that are inaccessible or counterproductive to traditional machines. Even the door is designed for tight working conditions. A convex door slides open along the exterior curve of the cab, rather than swinging out on hinges past tracks. And the excavators’ tight tail swing design allows them to load within the track width of the machine.

The interaction of flotation collectors with sulfide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulfides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidised to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidised xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulfides is discussed briefly.

As cities are growing all over the world, the need for urban transportation facilities are on the rise. Designers (of these facilities) today are faced with a number of constraints for their design, of the most is the space limitation and impact of new construction activities to the community. A typical subway station, as the focus of this paper, is approximately 600 to 1000 feet long, 50 feet wide and 2 to 3 story high. With such a large volume of construction activities, it is easily realized why underground stations are becoming obvious choice for larger cities eventhough the cost could be 2 1/2 to 3 times as much as an aerial station and 4 to 5 times that of an at-grade station [O'Neil et. al.(1977)]. Since cost is an important factor which is always increasing, therefore, the designer should have a good planning, consider alternatives for design and come up with a realistic design with minimum impact to the community. This paper is about the geotechnical considerations that the designer should be aware of. PLANNING A 1977 report [O'Neil et. al.(1977)] on the construction costs for a number of underground subway stations indicate that about 4 0% of the cost is site-controlled, 35% is structural items, and 25% is finish and equipment. It is seen that of opportunity exists for cost savings in the site selection and proper use of the site. Once the site is selected, the cost of construction become controlled by urban conditions at the site, geotechnical conditions, station size and depth. Therefore, the design-solution is very much site-specific. The geotecnical designer should collect the following information at the early phase of the design:

The Manhattan section of the New York Water Tunnel No. 3 constructed by the Schiavone/Shea/Frontier-Kemper Joint Venture is a $668 million project. The contract includes a tunnel drive of 8.85 km (29,045 feet), tunnel lining of 14.77 km (48,468 feet)and construction of nine shafts ranging in depth from 143 m (469 feet) to 169 m(555 feet). Construction methods for excavation of the shafts are presented including raise bore, ground freezing, soil excavation, blasting, slashing, muck handling, rock support and shaft final concrete lining.

The paper describes the geology of the gold deposits of the Yanacocha district, Northern Perú. The Yanacocha District is located 20 km north of the city of Cajamarca, whose deposits are located in the Andes of norther in Perú. Gold production may have occurred as early as Incan times, but modern exploration that began in the 1960’s targeted only copper and silver. Current mining is entirely by open pit methods with heap leach recovery. Production in 2003 was from the Cerro Yanacocha deposit and the La Quinua fluvioglacial deposit. La Quinua is not discussed in detail in this report. However, Yanacocha is described as a high-sulfidation epithermal deposit occurring in pyroclastic rocks. The success of Yanacocha has made this type of target among the most sought after by exploration companies worldwide. The important characteristics of the geology of Yanacocha are reviewed below, along with some specifics of exploration techniques used in the district.

The pile foundation of Sutong bridge pylons is an extra large pile foundation. The length of piles is 115m, and the diameter of the piles is 2.5-2.8m. Since the traditional design method may not determine the settlement and capacity reasonably for such a large pile foundation, the finite element method is used to study stress and deformation of the foundation. The interface element is set to simulate the possible slide between piles and soil layers. The hyperbolic model is taken for soils. Parameters are determined from triaxial test first, and then modified by back analysis on basis of in-situ loading test. The computation results show that the axial force of piles changes with the location of the pile. Outer piles support greater axial force and also friction. The settlement will not be greater than 26cm. The stress and deformation of the pile cap, the abutment, are obtained too. The whole foundation is safe.

This paper presents an overview of work conducted over several years to investigate the continuous stope closure profiles recorded in tabular excavations and the use of this data as a hazard indicator. In spite of the brittle nature of the rock, measurements in gold mines and intermediate depth platinum mines revealed a significant time-dependent closure component. Various approaches to simulate the time-dependent closure have been investigated. Viscoelastic theory is able to simulate the time-dependent closure behaviour, but there are subtle problems with the use of this theory as it cannot simulate the failure processes in the rock. To overcome these problems, continuum and discontinuum elasto-viscoplastic models were developed by the authors. Discontinuum models have the advantage of being able to simulate the creep behaviour of prominent discontinuities. Development of these models has led to useful insights into rock mass deformation and has made the numerical simulation of parameters, such as rate of mining, possible for the first time. A number of practical applications for the mining industry have been developed from this study. Originally developed for use in mineral exploration, regional geochemical mapping based on stream (and lake) sediment sampling is showing broader application in other areas of the earth sciences and in environmental science. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the role of regional geochemical mapping in relation to geological and environmental studies. This is achieved using a descriptive equation for the chemical composition of a stream-sediment sample and then relating it to the use of successive approximations in geochemical and environmental investigations. The procedure is further qualified with reference to time and process in the formation of regional geochemical patterns. Examples are included of studies based on stream sediments related to bedrock geology, surficial geology, ecology and man's effect on the geochemistry of the environment. The range of applications of regional geochemical mapping in earth and environmental studies is outlined and some conclusions drawn regarding the future development of geochemical mapping under Canadian conditions.

The decreasing quality of the input materials in copper recycling leads to a higher content of impurities in the anode copper. An improvement of the pyrometallurgical refining process is therefore necessary to produce high quality anodes for the copper refining electrolysis. The behaviour of the most important accompanying elements (e.g. nickel, tin, lead, zinc etc.) at different reaction conditions has to be investigated in order to improve the metal/slag reactions as well as the vaporisation by selective oxidation in the anode furnace. Therefore the thermodynamic conditions like reaction order and the activity coefficients at the copper refining process have to be known for the optimisation of this technique. Additionally the interaction between different elements has been investigated as a function of the temperature, the content of the elements and the slag composition especially for nickel. These investigations were done at the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Secondary Metallurgy of Nonferrous Metals.

"Exploitation of an ore deposit can be optimized by adapting the beneficiation processes to the properties of individual ore blocks. This can involve switching in and out certain treatment steps, or setting their controlling parameters. Optimizing this set of decisions requires the full conditional distribution of all relevant physical parameters and chemical attributes of the feed, including concentration of value elements and abundance of penalty elements. As a first step towards adaptive processing, the mapping of adaptive decisions is explored based on the composition, in value and penalty elements, of the selective mining units.Conditional distributions at block support are derived from cokriging and geostatistical simulation of log-ratios. A one-to-one log-ratio transformation is applied to the data, followed by modelling via classical multivariate geostatistical tools, and subsequent back-transforming of predictions and simulations. Back-transformed point-support simulations can then be averaged to obtain block averages that are fed into the process chain model.The approach is illustrated with a ‘toy’ example where a fourcomponent system (a value element, two penalty elements, and some liberable material) is beneficiated through a chain of technical processes. The results show that a gain function based on full distributions outperforms the more traditional approach of using unbiased estimates."

Olympic Dam is a world-class deposit and is unquestionably one of the most geologically, structurally and texturally complex orebodies in the world. As development advances into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) the geological understanding is rapidly evolving as underground drill rigs are prioritised to provide the additional data necessary to convert Indicated and Inferred Resources into Measured Resources. The SMA represents approximately 70 per cent of Olympic Dam’s total resource and is significantly more complex when compared to the Northern Mine Area with respect to the diverse nature and origin of lithotypes, rock mass characteristics and the extent of major structures controlling primary mineralisation trends.Recent mine development into the central SMA has been impacted by a major structural gouge zone. Sound geological interpretation allowed mine geologists to successfully integrate their local understanding of the distribution of lithotypes with critical geotechnical data, chiefly rock quality designation (RQD), to delineate and better predict this major structural gouge zone. As a direct result, development rates improved whilst also increasing awareness for the importance of sound geological interpretation utilising all available data. In order to maximise predictability across all systems in place through the mining geology value chain, the integration of geological and geotechnical data in a geotechnical RQD block model provides an additional tool to assist in preventative solutions for complex problems to achieve a proactive mining environment.This paper details the methods used to build the RQD block model, the geostatistical estimation parameters, 3D geotechnical domain wireframes, challenges regarding legacy approaches, and collection of geotechnical information and incorporating/linking geotechnical data with geological features, including the use of grade and lithotype domains. Many mines in Canada, the US and S. Africa are reaching the hoisting limit. Very little payload will be possible without compromising safety due the excessive weight. It has been suggested (DeLorme, 2000), that one of the most attractive concepts to enable deeper hoisting is to reduce the allowable factor of safety in the wire rope. Researchers at the Spokane Research Lab are developing new technology to improve hoisting safety and productivity by providing new monitoring and analytical tools. A Shaft Conveyance Monitoring System (SCMS) has been developed which determines hoist rope end load, true conveyance position and acceleration, and rope safety factor, as well as other hoist operating parameters. This information is transmitted to the hoist operator display 20 times per second. Recent field measurements on 45 mm(1 ¾ in.) diameter hoist rope indicate that dynamic forces during loading of a 9000 kg(10 ton) skip may exceed the safety factor of the rope. To improve on the current understanding of the mechanical behavior of hoist ropes, and to help interpret the results from field-testing of the SCMS, a new approach to computer modeling of stranded wire rope is also being developed. Particle Flow Code, PFC3D (Itasca 1995b) is used to simulate the structural behavior of wire rope and the interaction between individual strands when the rope is subjected to static and dynamic end loading. Details of the SCMS, field results from the measured rope loads, and the results of numerical modeling on the wire rope will be discussed.

All methods of deep foundation construction present challenges to the contractor and engineer that vary according to the method employed, and the geotechnical conditions in which it is being used. Augered-Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles are generally regarded as one of the most challenging, because the construction method precludes the use of traditional shaft inspection and quality control techniques. Application of Nondestructive Test (NDT) methods can provide quality control for ACIP shafts that traditional methods cannot, but each NDT method has limitations. These make some NDT methods unsuitable for use on ACIP shafts, and may limit the effectiveness of others, depending on geotechnical conditions. To help contractors and engineers working with ACIP piles select the test method most appropriate to specific site conditions, this paper presents a summary of the major NDT methods currently available, and reviews their capabilities with respect to the unique conditions presented by ACIP pile construction. Case histories illustrate how a combination of careful method selection, skilled data interpretation, and experienced engineering judgment have resolved problems and ensured quality in foundation construction by discriminating between potentially serious defects, and those that are unlikely to be significant.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017.
