The share of electric arc furnace based steel production is increasing - New technologies for the production of virgin raw materials for EAF production are under development and on the market - VAI has a strong position in the field of scrap substitution technologies with their COREX«-, COREX«-DR and FINMET«-technology. In late-1998 the steel plant SALDANHA was started up successfully. This integrated compact mill is using the COREX«-technology as hot metal and a combined DR-plant as DRI production unit. Also in 1999 the BHB FINMET« plant Port Headland went on Stream.

Zarshuran gold deposit, with the total reserves of some 12.5 million tons of 4.18 g/ton ore, is considered to be an important gold mining project in the area. In this paper the feasibility studies of the whole project is carried out on the basis of several economic variables. Given that mining data are often of uncertain nature, these economic variables have therefore been estimated under the conditions of uncertainty. The resultant Net Present Value is hence also obtained under the same conditions. For this purpose, a model is first devised with the help of Excel and COMFAR software. The model is then developed that considers different scenarios which would result in different expected values for the economic variables. It is concluded that the NPV of the project is most sensitive to gold and silver price and that other variables such as discount rate, operating and capital cost all affect the feasibility of the project with lower degree of severity. Finally, risk analysis is also carried out using Mont Carlo technique, in order to estimate the most probable value of NPV. The average NPV calculated in this way is US$ 49.7 Million, whilst without due consideration of risk, this would be US$ 36.6 Million. The techniques used, together with the procedures adopted in this paper, can be used in feasibility studies of all mining projects. Such decision would result in more accurate Net Present Values than expected from other frequently used methods.

Langer Asbestos-related disease is increased with cumulative exposure (the concentration of asbestos in the air and duration of exposure). The maximum duration is assumed to be a working lifetime so federal agencies control cumulative exposure by limiting the airborne concentration of asbestos fibers equal to or greater than 5 lm in length. Air samples are collected in the environment of interest by entraining the airborne particulates including fibers on membrane filters and then counting the number of fibers using phase-contrast light microscopy. In addition to length, the fibers must have a length to width ratio of at least 3 to 1. This ratio is also referred to as the aspect ratio. Some counting strategies placed an upper limit on the fiber width restricting the counting to respirable fibers. Airborne asbestos is controlled by monitoring a sub-population of the airborne asbestos. No asbestos fibers shorter than 5 lm or fibers of any length having widths less than the resolution of the light optical method are counted. In the non-occupational environment, the Environmental Protection Agency requires the use of analytical transmission electron microscopy and fibers and counting fibers with lengths of 0.5 lm or greater and aspect ratios of 5 to 1 or greater are counted. The permissible exposure limit for asbestos has been reduced by more than 120-fold since 1969, when the standard was 12 fiber/ml and the current monitoring methodology was developed. The manufacturing and mining worksites are regulated by two different federal agencies and the asbestos exposure limit was higher in the mining environment until recently (Mine Safety and Health Administration 30 CFR Part 56, 57, and 7, Federal Registry, February 29, 2008). Currently the permissible exposure limit (PEL) is the same in both types of workplace and it is 0.1 fibers per milliliter (fiber/ml) over an 8-h shift as a time-weighted average (TWA). A milliliter (ml) is equivalent to a cubic centimeter (cc) and sometimes this standard is reported as 0.1 f/cc. As the phase-contrast methodology was used to monitor lower exposures and environments, other fibrous mineral particulates were incorrectly characterized as asbestos. These occurred in talc deposits and taconite ores from the Eastern Mesabi Range.

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. "Conventional base metal milling practice normally consists of crushing, grinding and cyclone classification followed by flotation. It is the authors' belief that the commencement of flotation after cyclone classification leads to inferior metallurgical results and that implementation of flotation of grinding mill discharges can result in increased recovery due to reduced overgrinding, reduced activation of contaminating minerals and improved dewatering circuit results due to the production of coarser concentrates.The concept of recovering minerals from the discharge of grinding mills is not new! Gold concentrators have utilized jigs and flotation cells while iron ore plants have employed magnetic separators to recover gold and magnetite respectively from the discharge of grinding mills. More recently, a Reichert cone has been used to recover sulphide and oxide base metal minerals from screened rod mill discharge. 1To the authors' knowledge, the first application of flotation of base metal minerals from the discharge of a production plant grinding mill was at the Lake Dufault concentrator of Corpor'1tion Falcon bridge Copper. Located 10 miles north of Noranda, Quebec the Lake Dufault concentrator commenced operations in August, 1964.The installation of flot11tion cells in the Lake Dufault grinding circuit proved so successful that an identical system was installed in the Manibridge concentrator of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. Located 90 miles southwest of Thompson, Manitoba the Mamibridge concentrator commenced operations in June, 1971 and due to exhaustion of economic ore reserves discontinued production in May 1977."

In the last 20 years, In Line Inspection (ILI) using intelligent pigs has become the principal tool used by pipeline operators to assess the condition of their pipelines. New pipelines are normally designed to take intelligent pigs, but many older pipelines require some modifications and special procedures for their inspection. This paper is aimed at practicing engineers and managers of pipelines, or people aspiring to those positions. The paper describes the benefits of ILI and some of the practical issues regarding pipeline preparation and cleaning, choice of inspection tool, running pigs in pipelines, and what to do with the data collected. What are the responsibilities of the Pipeline Engineer ? ? Maintain reliable and acceptable performance of the pipeline in terms of safety and product delivery at economical cost. ? Provide a defined margin of safety for operating the pipeline at its designated pressure. ? Provide timely information on all pipeline defects such that repairs can be carried out according to a managed schedule. What Defects does the Pipeline Operator have to cope with ? A useful record of actual incidents seen in pipelines can be obtained from the web site of the US Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) - http://ops.dot.gov/stats/stats.htm. US pipeline Operators are obliged by Law to report all pipeline incidents exceeding certain threshold criteria (e.g loss of life, escape of product, cost of incident etc). These OPS statistics show that corrosion and third party damage have remained consistently the prime causes of reportable incidents in the US, with similar experience elsewhere. There are several kinds of flaws and defects in pipelines that can lead to failure, the main families being :- ? Metal loss ? Cracks or crack-like defects ? Laminations and other mid-wall defects ? Tables based on 1985 data, which were not available in time for publication of the "1985 Minerals Yearbook," are included in this chapter; corresponding tables for 1986 are not yet available. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1986 had an estimated value of $23.5 billion, an increase of $0.25 billion over the 1985 value. This is the fourth consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a de- crease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 14 out of 15 years. Industrial minerals growth slowed from a 3% increase in value in 1985 to a 1.5% increase in 1986, reflecting the slow growth in the domestic economy. The value of industrial minerals, more than three times larger than the value of metals, easily offset the less than 0.5% decline in the value of metal mine production. Although the decline was small, this decrease makes 1986 the fourth year in the past 6 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States. U.S. production continued to lag behind the growing world production. Overall, the estimated raw nonfuel mineral production rose 1% over that of 1985. Domestic mine production of ferrous metals declined as follows, in decreasing order of production: nickel, iron ore, tungsten, and molybdenum. All remaining domestic primary nickel and tungsten mines had closed down by yearend. Nonferrous metals that similarly declined included titanium, rare-earth metals, lead, silver, zinc, and magnesium. For the second consecutive year, aluminum, produced predominantly from imported bauxite, declined in production, while imports reached record-high levels. Somewhat modest gains were made in beryllium and copper. As has been the case for a number of years, gold was a bright spot in the domestic and internation-al metal mining industry. Gold production was spurred on by the increasing usage and development of heapleaching techniques that make lower grade ores, which were previously uneconomical, profitable. Additionally, various mining companies, the U.S. Mint, individual States, and a number of foreign countries began production of gold bullion and commemorative coins. Gold output in the United States increased from 2.43 million troy ounces (revised) in 1985 to about 3.73 million troy ounces in 1986, a dramatic 54% rise.

La unidad minera Tintaya al igual que la Unidad Minera Antapaccay, son las operaciones de la división Perú de Xstrata Copper dedicados a la producción y comercialización de concentrado y cátodos de cobre. Sin embargo, la mina está en su última etapa de vida. En este sentido, surge el proyecto de integración de la unidad Antapaccay, donde se busca prolongar la vida útil de la mina y por consiguiente, el de la actividad económica minera en la provincia de Espinar. Por ello, el presente trabajo, describe los efectos de esta expansión de la explotación minera a través de la Unidad Minera Antapaccay que utiliza las instalaciones de Tintaya, manteniendo los planes de inversión social y el desarrollo económico local y regional.

The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the openstopes. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar strength and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to oversize pillars with consequential loss of ore or undersize pillars resulting in potential collapses or pillar bursts. This paper describes a back-analysis of pillar failures at Impala Platinum, just north of Rustenburg, and provides insights into pillar behaviour. Strength formulae are presented for Merensky Reef pillars at Impala. These formulae may be used cautiously on other platinum mines with similar geotechnical and geomechanical conditions.

Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.

The C.S.I.R.O. acid alumina process employs the essential steps of digestion, hydrolysis and calcination to produce pure alumina from ores too high in silica or too low in grade for the Bayer process. The two latter stages have been described in some detail previously but the digestion stage requires separate discussion since ores vary widely in composition and reactivity. Kaolinitic clays require roasting to 800°C to render the alumina soluble in the 11 per cent sulphuric acid used in the process while some ferruginous laterites require roasting to reduce the reactivity of iron minerals.The iron content of pregnant solutions is kept at a low figure by digesting at temperatures where the solubilities of ferric oxide or basic ferric sulphates are small. A two-stage, counter-current digestion is necessary to extract a high percentage of alumina from the ores and to produce a basic pregnant liquor with an SO3 : AI 203 ratio of 1'\1 suitable for high temperature hydrolysis. The second stage of digestion, called the modification stage, treats slightly acid liquors with excess of ore in the temperature range 1200-1400C.The first stage operates at 170°-1900C to extract further alumina from modification residues, using recycled acid obtained from later steps of the process. Both temperature ranges are critical for economic operation and for proper control of the iron content of solutions. In batch experiments, 30 min is regarded as a suitable retention time for digestion and modification; ores which require much longer than this are less suitable for the process. Impurities such as silica, and titanium and vanadium oxides are discarded in the residue along with iron oxide, and do not contaminate the final product. Bivalent metallic sulphates such as MgSO4, can build up in the circuit to a very considerable degree without affecting product purity.Comparison with other processes shows that the C.S.I.R.O. process is superior for control of contamination by iron, which is the major problem in acid processes. The pure intermediate product (3Al203.4S03.9H20) is also more convenient for calcination to alumina than the hydrated aluminium sulphate usually recovered in other processes. Detailed cost comparisons must await pilot-plant evaluation of the C.S.LR.O process.

With production of coal per man-hour of work at a higher level than ever before, the coal-mining industry of the United States established a near-record in lowering the accident rate of nonfatal injuries per million man-hours of exposure in 1940, the injury rate being lower, except for 1939, than in any year since 1930, the first year for which comparable figures for nonfatal accidents were collected by the. Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. The rate for fatal accidents, on the other hand, was not as low or favorable as in 1939, nor was it as low as in many years since 1910, the earliest year for which fatality rates were complete for all coal-mining States. Accident and employment reports received from mine operators and fatal-accident reports from State mining departments and inspectors showed that 533,267 men were employed at coal mules in 1940, exclusive of the number employed at coke ovens, Although this number represented 6,108 fewer employees than in 1939, a large increase was made in the volume of work performed and in the quan¬tity of coal produced. In 1940 the amount of labor performed at coal mines was 748 million man-hours, a gain of more than 10 percent over the previous year. The average employee worked 199 days, an increase of 20 workdays per man. Production of coal was nearly 513 million tons, an increase of 14 percent, of which more than 461 million tons was bituminous coal and more than 51 million tons was Pennsylvania anthracite. Accidents to mine workers caused the death of 1,388 employees; in addition, 59,781 employees were injured, and each injury resulted in disability of the employee for more than the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred.

Underground coal mining under massive sandstone can present significant challenges if the roof behavior is not well understood. This paper presents a classic cantilever bending/flexing behavior of a longwall tailgate roof caused by the weighting of structurally massive sandstone strata. Nineteen crosscuts of a longwall tailgate under massive sandstone were instrumented with position transducers connected to a data-logger to monitor roof convergence as the longwall face approached. During the monitoring program, an unusual tailgate roof divergence (uplift) was recorded. This roof behavior contradicts expected norm of roof convergence when the longwall is influenced by periodic weighting. The recorded roof movement data indicated that the roof divergence started well ahead of the longwall face. The most inby position transducer started recording progressive roof divergence when the longwall face was approximately 643 feet away. Very gradual roof convergence did not begin until the longwall face got to within 300 feet of the transducer. Recording of accelerated convergence only started after a massive caving event with the face within 280 feet of the recording transducer.

This study analyses the results of a pilot trial of a newly developed armed-chained stone-cutting machine. The machine was developed in Turkey and trialed at the Kaklik/Kocaba travertine quarries in the Denizli District. An armed-chained cutting machine is an alternative to the diamond wire cutting method more frequently used in the production of natural stone quarry blocks, and increases production efficiency and quality. Since there is no need to collapse the blocks using the armed-chained cutting production process, there is no risk of the block developing cracks. This results in a considerable increase in the efficiency of natural stone block production. The armed-chained cutting machine is easier both to assemble and run when compared to other block cutting methods. This process resulted in the production of a larger number of blocks at a lower cost within the same time frame, particularly in travertine quarries and in all other natural stone quarries. The block efficiency in travertine quarries was calculated as 65?80%using the armed-chained cutting machine, compared with 7?14% using the normal diamond wire cutting method.

Cominco Metals, in cooperation with two Canadian Universities and the Government of Canada, is developing applications for column flotation in the treatment of lead and zinc ores. Plant scale results at Polaris and pilot plant studies of Sullivan, Pine Point and Red Dog ores show column flotation to have significant advantages over conventional mechanical flotation for lead and zinc cleaning. Results from these ongoing studies are discussed in relation to ore texture, mineral recovery, impurity behaviour, scale-up and control.

The reconstruction of the world after the present war must inevitably be profoundly influenced by the rise and progress of New China.The principle of Chinese mathrity has been admitted by Great Britain and the United States by their abjuration of extra-territorial tights, and by the withdrawal of the Maritime Customs Administration. The United States admits equality by her declaration that Chinese are eligible for American citizenship, and the reaction to this will be swift enmity to such peoples as may impose humiliating restrictions upon Chinese citizens.Finally, the decisions of the Moscow Conference and the recent meeting of National leaders in Cairo give partnership rights to this new State in post-war reconstruction, and open the way for a rapid realization of her destiny.It seems certain that China, if so she wills, can become, within a generation or so, one of the considerable forces of the world. The toad she wiII follow will be lighted by her own inherent and intrinsic genius. Her speed of progress can no longer be forcibly influenced by other nations and the attitude towards her of somewhat contemptuous patronage hitherto adopted by the European communities bordering the Pacific Ocean must be radically modified.It is doubtful whether the European will ever reach full understanding of Chinese mentality. The Chinese "way of life" since the dawn of her civilization has been totally divergent from that of the European, but the enormous potential strength, due to the simplicity of their requirements and their steadfast industry, is a function of that "way of life." On the other hand the trend of reorganization must obviously be towards Western standards; and a wide knowledge of the potential strength of the Chinese is possible and will be essential in our post-war world. The following, necessarily inadequate, notes are therefore offered, as an indication of the obstacles to be overcome and the capacity of the Chinese executives and operatives to overcome them.For 'thirteen centuries the political and social structure of China proper (ie, excluding Mongolia, Manchuria and Tibet) has been rigidly shaped by the philosophy of Lao Tze and the ethics' of Confucius. This Taoism, which is described as the "way of harmony" with its three jewels of character, gentleness, economy and humility, advocates the minimum of social, economic and political organization and still gives the key to the Chinese character.The Mongol and Manchu conquests of the 12th and 17th centuries, respectively, could hardly be dignified with the name of war, but the superior intelligence and harder mentality of the unwarlike Chinese finally absorbed...

RESEARCH strengthened the position of cesium as the preferred material (commonly but erroneously called "fuel") for ionic propulsion engines. Its use as an element of the plasma thermocouple for generating electricity also seemed more likely. Domestic Production.-No domestic ore of cesium and rubidium was produced. San Antonio Chemicals, Inc., San Antonio, Tex., and Maywood Chemical Works, Maywood, N.J., continued to produce cesium and rubidium compounds including carbonate, chromate, hydroxide, nitrate, sulfate, and all four halides. Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., began producing various cesium and rubidium salts. American Potash & Chemical Corp., Los Angeles, Calif., offered cesium and rubidium for sale.
