Novel dewatering aids were tested on various coal samples from the U.S. and Canada in laboratory and pilot-scale filtration experiments. The reagents substantially improved the dewatering kinetics and reduced the cake moistures. The cake moistures were typically reduced from 20-30% by weight to 8-14% range in vacuum filtration. When the reagents were used in conjunction with a pressure filter, higher degrees of moisture reductions were achieved. In the present work, the novel dewatering aids were tested using different types of pilot-scale vacuum filters. The results were consistent with those obtained in laboratory experiments.

Surface properties of minerals could be modified selectively and very specifically by adsorption -desorption (dissolution) processes. This requires a monitoring and control of the outermost surface layer at a molecular and atomic level. The nature and structure of self-assembled submonolayers and monolayers at the interface of minerals were studied by infrared reflection spectroscopy. The external reflection spectra of the adsorbed monolayers on any type of minerals: transparent, opaque or non-transparent, recorded at different angles of incidence and for two polarizations are an excellent source of information about the nature and surface distribution of the adsorbed species. The developed method allows to obtain detailed information at a molecular level about the adsorbed surface species. By combination of the simulated and experimental data, the qualitative description of the adsorbed species as well as quantitative evaluation of orientation and the thickness of the adsorption layers were obtained. This fundamental knowledge allows to determine the mechanisms of surface phenomena which govern selective separations. Examples of different surfactant - mineral systems and industrial applications will be discussed.

Treated effluent from the Clean Water Coalition (CWC) member agencies is currently discharged at an annual average rate of 6,570 l/s into the Las Vegas Wash, and is increasing annually. As the effluent flow increases, the nutrient loading of the treated effluent will approach the maximum limits allowed under the current regulations. To manage this flow while maintaining water quality in Lake Mead, the CWC is implementing a 44-km-long conveyance system. This paper discusses the geological and geotechnical aspects of the 13.4-km-long tunneled section through the River Mountains and their effect on design. The tunnel alignment traverses a heterogeneous package of volcanic and sedimentary rocks exhibiting widely variable rock conditions.

An assessment of U.S. western hard-rock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed, and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hard-rock mining machines. Ninety-six percent of the operators had daily noise doses that exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214%, and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jack-leg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners. INTRODUCTION The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) serves unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, parts of the cities of Sacramento and Folsom, and the cities of Citrus Heights, West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, and Elk Grove. SRCSD maintains 145 kilometers (km) (90 miles) of interceptors that convey a combined total of 0.6 million meters3 per day (160 million gallons per day) or more of waste-water, with additional miles of sewer interceptors that are scheduled to be built by 2020. Wastewater is conveyed to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in the southwestern portion of the County, also managed and operated by SRCSD, in interceptors with diameters as large as 3.0 m (120 inches.) As part of its overall expansion program, SRCSD has constructed a number of major interceptors over the last few years with tunneling methods due to concerns associated with either the impacts of open cut construction in an urban environment (traffic, safety, noise, environmental concerns) or the need to achieve a crossing of a stream, river, or transportation corridor. This paper focuses on a specific issue that affected construction of the Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) Sections 3&4 project, located at the northern limit of the SRCSD service boundary and within the limits of the City of Sacramento. This project involved the construction of 3.2 km (2 miles) of 2.1-meter (84-inch) and 2.4 km (1.5 miles) of 1.7-meter (66-inch) diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) using MTBM, EPBM, and 3.3-meter (130-inch) two-pass TBM methods. The owner elected to install the RCP using tunneling for a number of reasons including a desire to avoid traffic impacts in a dense urban corridor, to minimize disturbance to the neighborhood, and to avoid potential dewatering-induced settlement issues along the western one-third of the project. For the western portion of the alignment the 2.1-meter (84-inch) reinforced concrete interceptor pipe was to be installed using a 2.7-meter (105-inch) earth pressure balance machine (EPBM). No external dewatering of shafts or tunnels was permitted for reasons of concern about settlement, discussed previously. At the intersection of Elkhorn Boulevard and Natomas Boulevard (at the extreme northwest corner of the project) the 2.7-meter (105-inch) EPBM tunneled past a recently constructed 11-million liter (3-million gallon) water storage reservoir, passing within 3 meters (10 feet) of the tank?s shallow foundation while tunneling through clean sands with a shallow groundwater table. The paper will discuss the implemented solution to mitigate additional settlement risk that was developed as a joint collaboration between the owner, CM, designer, and contractor.

One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is the modelling of liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. While more fundamental research seeks to model the non-random breakage of ores this work examines whether we can move forward now by using observed characteristics of ores to model the composition of particles generated in comminution processes. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which of these exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed.

The floatation of niobite was studied using a number of collectors at various dosages and solution pH’s. Octyl diphosphonic acid was found to be an effective collector for niobite flotation with good selectivity. A flotation recovery of 91.2% was obtained with 140 mg/l octyl diphosphonic acid at pH’s less than 5.0. Infrared absorption spectroscopy (IAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the interactions of niobite with octyl diphosphonic acid. Species distribution diagram of octyl diphosphonic acid and niobium species was used to elucidate the flotation behavior of the mineral with octyl diphosphonic acid. The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County constructs twin Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnels through cohesive soils and rock beneath the Allegheny River and a narrow city street in Pittsburgh, PA. The tunnel alignment includes an historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and an office building constructed directly over the alignment during the design of the tunnel sections. This paper provides an overview and update of the general site conditions, TBM tunnel design, and support of excavation for the TBM launching pit. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans are also discussed.

If the particles produced and transported in your plant are as chunky as rough crushed coal or as fine as cement, there are probably several conveying and elevating systems suitable for your operation. The problem is deciding which is most suitable in terms of space, energy cost, allowable product degradation, productivity, and angle of movement. Each conveying and elevating method should be fit to the products it can handle successfully, to desirable economics, and to suitability for the overall operating scheme. Matching along these lines will result in selection guides that should be useful for many years, although design evolution is expected for the materials handling equipment involved. There are several common bulk material handling devices for moving solids: belt conveyors, screw conveyors, bucket elevators, chain conveyors, and en-masse conveyors/ elevators. En-masse conveyor/elevator equipment is commonly compared and contrasted with the other devices. These comparisons often involve en-masse versus all others. En-masse has developed into a versatile technique because the machines can move materials horizontally, vertically, or in closed circuit. Such machines unload, elevate, store, reclaim, and distribute materials-all without ancillary equipment except for chutes and gates. Bulk material can be carried, as with a belt conveyor or bucket elevator; pushed, as with a flight or screw conveyor; bumped, as with a vibrating conveyor; blown, as with a pneumatic conveyor; fluidized, as with a dense phase pneumatic conveyor; or by applying internal forces to it to induce "en-masse" flow. Conveying en-masse is analogous to the flow of a fluid in an open channel, and elevating en-masse is analogous to the flow of fluid in a pipe. In the case of a fluid, flow is caused by a differential in pressure. With en-masse movement, flow results from resistance to shear induced by the movement of chain and flights.

An ongoing research program is characterizing the ore qualities that most affect mine and mill processing of iron. Current practice uses assays of magnetic iron and silica, but additional qualities are needed for advanced process control. If additional qualities can be measured from core, blastholes, or process samples, they can be modeled and controlled similarly. What qualities, other than assays, hinder or facilitate beneficiation at each processing step, and how can they be measured in the mine/mill ore stream? This paper describes preliminary determinations of the effects of ore chemistry, hardness, blasthole drill performance, fragmentation control, and grindability on mill performance.

A conveyor belt fire presents a serious safety hazard in an underground coal mine. A review of underground coal mine fires involving conveyor belts which occurred within the past two decades was made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Belt fires that occurred during this period of time have burned as much as 610 m of belting before the fire was extinguished. In an effort to improve safety, MSHA has undertaken a program to study the flammability of conveyor belts in large and small-scale tests. Large-scale tests were conducted on various types of mine conveyor belts using a range of airflows from 0 to 6.1 m/s. Data were obtained to evaluate the effect of airflow on flame spread and other combustion properties of the conveyor belts. The results from the large-scale tests were utilized to develop a new MSHA laboratory-scale test for evaluating the flame resistance of conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. Agreement of results based on a pass/fail criterion was obtained between the large-scale test and new laboratory-scale test. A summary of test results from the new test is shown for different conveyor belt formulations. MSHA also performed a series of fire tests with wood samples using the new laboratory-scale tunnel apparatus. These tests were conducted at airflows from 0.5 to 5.1 m/s to determine the effect on flame spread and burn damage. The data were also analyzed to determine if wood could be used as a calibration standard. The results indicate the flame spread behavior of the wood follows trends similar to results obtained with conveyor belts. The data did not show the precision needed to use wood as a calibration standard. MSHA intends through rulemaking procedures to replace the "20g" conveyor belt acceptance test with the new laboratory-scale test. MSHA also plans to implement a voluntary acceptance program. Under this program, a. conveyor belt manufacturer could obtain an MSHA acceptance for belts meeting the new test criterion. A belt accepted under the voluntary program could then be used underground. Use of conveyor belts meeting the new test would limit the propagation of fire and reduce the probability of igniting other combustibles in the belt entry.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a respirable dust survey to evaluate the effectiveness of a water curtain utilized for dust control on continuous miner sections. The purpose of this survey was to determine if the water curtain was effective in reducing respirable dust concentrations, since several mines currently use water curtains to control miners? respirable dust exposures. The survey was conducted on a supersection of an underground coal mine, which utilized two continuous miners on the same split of air. Each continuous miner alternated taking a cut so that both continuous miners would not operate at the same time. The underground coal mine is located in Knox County, Indiana. The water curtain evaluated in this survey was located in the last open crosscut between the intake side continuous miner and the return side continuous miner. When the intake side continuous miner cuts coal, its exhaust air would be used to ventilate the return side of the section. The intent of the water curtain was to reduce the intake air respirable dust concentration (generated by the intake side continuous miner) before the air stream ventilated the return side of the section. To determine the effectiveness of the water curtain in reducing respirable dust concentrations, respirable dust sampling pumps were placed on both the intake side and the return side of the water curtain. Additional respirable dust sampling pumps were placed farther downstream from the water curtain to monitor dust levels downstream of the water curtain, but in an area where respirable dust would not be created by anything other than the intake side continuous miner or additional section air. The water curtain and the respirable dust sampling pumps were operated only when the intake side continuous miner was cutting coal. The samples were analyzed for respirable dust and quartz content. The water curtain showed minimal effect in controlling respirable dust and respirable quartz dust, but the reduction was so negligible that this survey could not quantify the reduction. The measured reductions are within the accuracy of the sampling equipment.

INTRODUCTION The first Dispute Review Board (DRB) was utilized on a tunnel project 20 years ago. Increasingly utilized on a wide range of construction projects, DRB's are becoming the norm on tunnel and underground projects. This paper summarizes the growth in this usage, uses observations and experience to establish that barriers to the utilization of DRB's are more perceived than real and that many arguments against the DRB concept are not valid, and notes some of the salient elements that should be considered in practice to optimize DRB effectiveness. The purpose of the paper is to provide an annotated checklist for current and prospective users. The basic concept, structure, and operation of DRB's are described elsewhere and will not be repeated here (ASCE, 1991). DISPUTE REVIEW BOARD USAGE A compilation of Dispute Review Board usage for tunnel and underground projects to January 1994 indicated use on 63 contracts with a cumulative construction value of $3.8 billion and a total of 60 disputes settled. As of that same date, DRB's were planned for another 63 contracts with an estimated construction value of $4.7 billion. (A listing of these 126 projects is available from the authors.) This success and popularity have spread to other civil projects as well as process and building construction. The increase in DRB usage has been exponential. See Figure 1.

The block cutting machine is one of the most important noise sources in the stone processing factories. In this study, the assessability of the noise from the block cutting machines in the stone processing factories using the P-wave velocity was investigated. The noise levels of some block cutting machines were firstly measured during the cutting of the three different rocks. Then, core samples of the same rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. A conversion factor was obtained by dividing the site noise levels by the laboratory noise levels. Then, thirty seven different rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. The P-wave velocity of rock samples were also measured in the laboratory. A strong relation between the laboratory noise levels and the P-wave velocity was found. The noise level from the block cutting machines can be assessed using the derived relation and the conversion factor.

Since the beginning of Aluminum mining and refining the industry has lived with distributed control rooms and suffered from many behavioral problems common with this design. When Human Factor/Ergonomic design is introduced to a Western Australian installation a common centralized control room realized many improvements including economic payback. Communications issues were resolved, better coordination of materials, improved situation awareness during startups, abnormal operations and an opportunity to make improvements during normal operations characterize the changes at the Worsley Refinery. This presentation will review the reasons for the change. Since the beginning of Aluminum mining and refining the industry has lived with distributed control rooms and suffered from many behavioral problems common with this design. When Human Factor/Ergonomic design is introduced to a Western Australian installation a common centralized control room realized many improvements including economic payback. This presentation will review the reasons for the change, what changed and the process of changing the culture from reactive to predictive and what difference that has made.

Coupled influence of sulphidizers and xanthates on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite was systematically examined via electrophoretic mobility measurements and microflotation tests. The electrophoretic mobility results for the malachite before and after surface modification with different types (Na2S and (NH4)2S) and amounts (1×10-7?1×10-4 moles/g) of sulphidizers, showed that the isoelectric points (IEP) of malachite differed at the low dosage level depending on the type of the sulphidizer, which ranged between 5 and 9.5. However, the IEP values were observed to be shifted from high to low pH values with increasing amount of sulphidizers and finally ranged between 3 and 4, indicating that the sulphidizers played a different role on changing the surface property of malachite. In order to further understand the effect of sulphidizers on the electrokinetic property and flotation behavior of malachite in a sulphidizer+xanthate system, flotation tests were carried out with malachite sulphidized with Na2S and (NH4)2S (adsorptive amount=8×10-5 moles/g) at different bulk xanthate concentrations. The results showed that the flotability of (NH4)2S-treated malachite was greater than Na2S-treated one over the entire xanthate concentration investigated, indicating that the type of sulphidizers played important role in malachite flotation; however, no obvious correlation between electrokinetic property and flotability of malachite was observed.

Flotation behavior, of magnesite and dolomite pure minerals was studied separately. Rice bran oil (a source of fatty acid ) was used as a collector for both minerals . The aim of this study is to find a separating zone in the flotation of these pure minerals to be used in the separation of their mixture. Factors affecting the flotation process, such as pH and collector, were studied. It was found that magnesite can be separated, from its mixture with dolomite, in the pH range of 5-7. At this pH range flotation recovery of dolomite reaches~98% where magnesite reaches ~20% only. Besides, the effect of collector concentration on the flotation shows that the separation of magnesite from dolomite is feasible at a collector concentration of 3x10-4 M. At such concentration, dolomite recovery reaches ~98%, where magnesite reaches 25%. The differences in the flotation behavior of dolomite and magnesite were investigated by studying the adsorption isotherms of rice bran oil on magnesite and dolomite surfaces. The adsorption study indicates that while there is an excessive adsorption on dolomite surface, the adsorption density on magnesite was restricted to be lower than monolayer capacity. The adsorption behavior of dolomite and magnesite was discussed in the light of their solubility and crystal structure. It was found that due to the higher solubility of dolomite than magnesite, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions are available and more reactive on dolomite surface increasing collector adsorption. In addition, it was indicated that dolomite mineral has a crystal lattice structure more compatible to the geometry of the fatty acid carboxylic group than magnesite. However, the adsorption of collector on dolomite surface is more compact and more regular than on magnesite surface.

Due to deposit shape and dimension, narrow vein makes reserve modeling, geological control, stope design, drill and blasting more challenging. It needs high standard quality control as errors can be created easily, which could cause significant amount of ore loss or dilution. From channel sampling, survey control, reserve modeling, drill hole design, blasting, communication with underground drillers to backfill, this paper illustrated every step and its quality control of a long hole stope mining. Compared to other narrow vein mining methods (cut and fill and shrinkage), long hole stoping means higher production, less labor, and significantly lower cost when deposit characteristics allowed.

A clay binding agent has been investigated to enhance flotation recovery of bitumen from Canadian high fines oil sand in the Clark Hot Water Extraction (CHWE) process. Selective adsorption on fine particles and subsequent agglomeration are critical for the success of clay binder enhanced oil sand flotation. A number of flotation tests have been performed at different reagent dosages under different operating conditions such as pulp pH to evaluate the reagent performance. Dissipative Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM-D) analyses of clay binder adsorption on quartz were carried out to better understand process mechanisms. It has been found that use of clay binder in flotation resulted in an absolute bitumen recovery increase of 18%, 25%, and 11% for the high-, medium-, and low-grade oil sand samples, respectively. The QCM-D analyses have revealed that the clay binder was strongly adsorbed on the SiO2 surface.
