Mixed integer programming (MIP) has been used for optimizing production schedules of mines since the 1960s and is recognized a shaving significant potential for optimizing production scheduling problems for both surface and underground mining. The major problem in long-term production scheduling for underground orebodies generally relate to the large number of variables needed to formulate a MIP model, which makes it too complex to solve. As the number of variables in the model increase, solution times are known to increase at an exponential rate. In many instances the more extensive use of MIP models has been limited due to excessive solution times.

In this paper, which is aimed to serve as a review article, first of all a breakdown of the earth?s total water reserves is given. The usage areas of water in the mining industry are mentioned and these uses are briefly outlined, together with the main pollution potential of each. According to this, most of the water (almost 80% of it) is utilized in processing. Later on, probable damages that the mining would give to groundwater as a result of acid mine drainage, heavy metal pollution, euthrophication and deoxygenation is described. Finally, the measures and controls that should be taken against water contamination in mines are presented.

We consider in this paper the use of a modified version of Hotelling?s statistic in the analysis of particle size distributions. The statistic can be adversely affected by the presence of outliers among the data. We propose a competitor to the statistic that is based on ranks, and hence is less sensitive to outlier effects. The results of a Monte Carlo study suggest that the rank test is highly competitive with the Hotelling test in its ability to detect differences between two mass size distributions. The calculation of the rank statistic is explained in detail and its application is illustrated on two sets of data.

The Alusaf aluminium smelter at Richards Bay by H. T. KAISER, B.Sc. (Pta), M.B.L. (Unisa) (Visitor) and P. DE WAAL, B.Sc., B.lng. (Mech.) (Stell.) (Visitor) A description is given of the aluminium smelter at Richards Bay, which operates on the Hall-Heroult electrolysis principle. The annual output of metal (average 99,7 per cent aluminium) is approximately 7S 000 tons. Since its commissioning in 1971, the plant has fulfilled South Africa's total demand for low-alloy rolling slabs, extrusion billets, remelt ingots, and electrical conductor rod. The plant layout allows for sufficient expansion of its capacity to meet longterm increases in demand.

The use of dual-energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) technology in the mining industry has been developing rapidly in the past decade. In many projects, DE-XRT images are analysed to classify ore and waste in sulphide deposits where the sulphides and non-sulphides have distinct characteristics in density. In the current practice of DE-XRT image processing, every pixel in the image gets classified into two categories, depending on the intensity of the pixel from both low and high energy X-ray response. If the pixel’s intensity is above the threshold curve generated in the high-energy and lowenergy scatter plot, it is classified as “higher density” material, and the remaining pixels are classified as “lower density” material. This paper elaborates on an alternative approach to DE-XRT image processing for in-depth characterisation of samples from a lead-zinc sulphide deposit. The detailed characterisation is achieved by providing density distribution of individual rock using DE-XRT laboratory sorting unit (COMEX) located at the University of British Columbia. Instead of classifying the X-ray images into two different classes from one threshold curve, multiple density classes are created between two threshold curves to generate the density distribution. By manipulating the two threshold curves, we can analyse images of samples obtained at different resolutions of density distribution. If the two threshold curves become infinitely close to each other, it will create a single-threshold scenario similar to the current methods being used in the industry. This method provides the ability to change the threshold curves, hence providing more flexibility on material characterisation based on the needs of the operation. Furthermore, the DE-XRT images from individual rock specimens are compared to the test results from hand-held X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser as well as assays of various elements for the same set of samples. The data analysis will provide information regarding ore characteristics and also the theoretical performance of the sensor-based sorting. The International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, which replaced the Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium, was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd and 4th August, 1989. The Colloquium attracted 150 delegates from the mining, metallurgical, and chemical industries, including 9 from overseas.

The object of this study was to investigate the i1Jfluence of nitrogen on the structure and properties of AISI 310S steel. Experimental ingots of the steel with nitrogen contents of up to 0,525 per cent by weight were prepared, hot-rolled, and tested after various treatments. The rollability of the material was adequate. The yield strength, tensile strength, hardness, and fatigue properties of the new alloys improved with increasing nitrogen content. The impact properties improved slightly. Empirical equations were developed for the calculation of the yield and tensile strengths, as well as the difference between these two properties, with increasing nitrogen content.

"Ferrochrome (FeCr) is vital for the production of stainless and high-alloy ferritic steels, since it is the only source of new Cr units. FeCr production is an energy-intensive process. The pelletized chromite prereduction process is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption (SEC), i.e. MWh/t, currently in operation. However, due to increases in costs, efficiency, and environmental pressures, FeCr producers are attempting to lower their overall energy consumption even further. Recently, it was proven that pre-oxidation of chromite ore prior to pelletization and prereduction significantly decreases both the SEC and lumpy carbonaceous reductants required for smelting. This paper presents the first attempt at conceptualizing the technoeconomic feasibility of integrating chromite pre-oxidation into the prereduction process. Financial modelling yielded a net present value (NPV) at a 10% discount rate of approximately R900 million and an internal rate of return (IRR) of approximatelyy 30.5% after tax, suggesting that the implementation of pre-oxidation prior to pellet prereduction may be financially viable. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the parameter with the greatest influence on project NPV and IRR is the level of prereduction. This indicates that the relationship between maintaining the optimum pre-oxidation temperature and the degree of prereduction is critical for maximium process efficiency. IntroductionStainless steel is a crucial alloy in modern society. Virgin chromium (Cr) units used in the manufacturing of stainless steel are obtained from ferrochrome (FeCr) – a relatively crude alloy consisting predominantly of Cr and iron (Fe) (Murthy, Tripathy, and Kumar, 2011; Beukes, van Zyl, and Ras, 2012). FeCr is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and direct current arc furnaces (DCFs) (Neizel et al., 2013; Beukes, Dawson, and van Zyl, 2010; Dwarapudi et al., 2013). The energy required to heat, smelt, and reduce the chromite ore to the metallized state is supplied by electricity (Pan, 2013). FeCr production is an energy-intensive process, with a specific electricity consumption (SEC) varying from 2.4 MWh/t to more than 4.0 MWh/t FeCr produced, depending on the process applied (Pan, 2013; Neizel et al., 2013). Daavittila, Honkaniemi, and Jokinen (2004) stated that the typical operational costs of FeCr smelters can be divided into four categories, i.e. chromite ore (30%), carbonaceous reductant (20%), electricity (30%), and other production costs (20%). This makes electricity consumption the joint largest factor that influences operational costs in FeCr production."

Key variables in heap leaching include permeability, mechanical stability and mass transport. All of these properties can be manipulated by agglomerating and curing the ore before stacking it into heaps. The chemical and structural evolution of the agglomerates during curing is key to improving agglomerate properties and, ultimately, heap performance. It is possible to image the internal structure of agglomerates using SEM/EDX (e.g. QEMSCAN or MLA), although these methods are destructive and do not represent the 3D structure of the agglomerates. A non-destructive alternative is to image the agglomerates using X-ray Microtomography (XMT). Not only does this provide 3D information, it also allows the same samples to be repeatedly scanned, allowing the time evolution of the agglomerate structure and chemical composition to be tracked. In this paper we compared the behaviour of ores agglomerated using a combination of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate with ones in which chloride ions are added to the recipe, since chloride leaching is gaining in popularity as a chemical alternative to bioleaching for sulphide ores. We tracked the curing process beyond the typical time scales to see the impact that this has on both the agglomerate structure and the subsequent leaching behaviour. Technology is advancing at a rate that makes it extremely difficult for the mining industry to keep pace. Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of 'Google maps?' underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum's new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

The Decar Nickel District is a greenfield discovery by FPX Nickel Corp., of nickel mineralisation located in central British Columbia (BC), Canada. The Baptiste deposit is part of the Decar Nickel District and is a unique deposit containing a nickel-iron alloy mineral called awaruite, with over 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource grading 0.12% Davis Tube Recoverable (DTR) nickel. This deposit represents a significant nickel resource. Awaruite is a high density and ferromagnetic mineral, which could be recovered, along with magnetite that is also present in the samples, using magnetic separation. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the properties of the awaruite and its metallurgical response. This information is imperative for the set-up of the variables involved in its concentration. The aim of this paper is to show and discuss the effect of magnetic field strength for the recovery of nickel from Baptiste deposit samples. Magnetic separation at bench and pilot scale with different magnetic field strengths is evaluated as a concentration method for awaruite. Mineralogical information is provided to support the results and also to briefly assess the variability of DTR nickel within the deposit. The Baptiste deposit is unique and will benefit from a sound scientific understanding of the process solution as well as other ongoing work. If successful, the outcome will lead to the development of a mine. With greater than 2-billion tonnes of inferred resource, the mine would represent a significant new source of nickel globally. In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Since the first application of solvent extraction as part of the hydrometallurgical processing of copper, several studies have been carried out to optimize extractant formulations. In 2006, Solvay developed the ACORGA® OPT series of solvent-extraction reagents to optimize copper transfer by use of a blended formulation containing both aldoxime and ketoxime as well as selected modifiers. The incorporation of selected modifiers in these blended reagents resulted in increased copper transfer, due to the interaction between the modifier and oximes within the blend. By changing the ketoxime concentration and ratio of modifier to aldoxime, the strength of the formulation was optimized to enhance copper transfer and improve Cu:Fe selectivity. This formulation is well known in the African region under the ACORGA® OPT5540 name and provides the best performance at the conditions of agitated leach plants with pregnant leach solutions that fluctuate in Cu grade and pH. De Beers' Finsch Mine is situated in the Northern Cape province, 170 km northwest of Kimberley. The concentrator facility, designed and constructed by Bateman Engineering, was commissioned in 1967 and upgraded in 1979 using diamond liberation and extraction technology available at the time of design. Since then significant advances in diamond processing and technology have been made and these -have been incorporated into the new main treatment plant and recovery plant flowsheets, making diamond liberation and recovery from the Pre-1979 dumps a viable economic option at Finsch."

"The primary function of a tundish in the steelmaking industry is to serve as a buffer tank, accepting molten steel from the batch ladle process and allowing it to be cast continuously. However, modern steelmaking has more stringent demands for the quality of the steel product, requiring increased control over the properties of the molten steel before casting. For this reason tundishes have been developed as metallurgical reactors to serve as the final step in refining of the molten steel by removing non-metallic inclusions, preventing the formation of new inclusions, and promoting chemical and thermal homogeneity. In this study the flow behaviour in a four-strand tundish was investigated by means of a half-scale water model as well as numerical modelling. Both the numerical study and physical model were used to characterize residence time distribution (RTD) in the vessel and calculate properties pertaining to the tundish flow regime. Three different tundish configurations were investigated: a bare tundish with no flow control devices, a tundish with a turbulence inhibitor and a tundish with both a turbulence inhibitor and a dam.The physical and numerical models showed that a tundish without flow control devices was prone to significant short-circuiting. A tundish with a turbulence inhibitor was shown to be successful in preventing short-circuiting and provided surface-directed flow, which aids inclusion removal in the slag. Despite the benefits of the use of turbulence inhibitors, it was observed that the upward-directed flow increased the maximum turbulence kinetic energy near to the surface by approximately 120% compared with the bare tundish. Therefore the potential for slag entrainment should be considered during the design and operation of tundishes utilizing turbulence inhibitors."
