This report describes the development, installation and performance of a lonpwall illumination system. The longwall illumination system was installed at the Greenwich Collieries 112, Cockport, Pa. It utilized flourescent luminaires, intrinsically safe power distribution and is the first longwall system installed in Pennsylvania.

Successful longwall mining requires a good roof control. A good roof control implies that: (1) no excessive pressure is build up in the face powered supports, and (2) chain pillars are designed in such a way that panel entries are well protected and interactions between adjacent panels are minimized. A clear understanding of strata behavior around longwall panels due to face movement is, therefore, the foremost requirement for achieving better roof control. This dissertation is designed to analyze the effects of strata behavior on longwall panels due to the mining activities. The following topics are studied: (1) the weighting, phenomena and their effects on front abutments, and (2) the chain pillar stability and pillar design under various roof conditions. Three dimensional finite element analysis was employed. The effect of parameters such as overburden depth, mechanical properties of the immediate roof and main roof, panel width, and size of chain pillar on (t) and (2) were analyzed. Four typical models were utilized to simulate various phases of panel extraction under various combinations of the above parameters; model one is to simulate the beginning of panel mining; model two is to simulate the situation that longwall face has passed more than half of panel length; model three is to simulate the completion of panel production; and model four is to simulate the second panel mining. The following formulae have been developed by applying multiple regression model to analyze the finite clement results: (1) a formula that classifies the type of root strata at the face area. (2) formulae that predict the first weighting and periodic weighting lengths. (3) a formula for design of the chain pillar size. Case studies were performed to check the validity of the formulae proposed. Comparison of the formulae proposed for the chain pillar design with other formulae were also performed.

Alaska contains many critical and strategic minerals that are scarce in the conterminous United States. Among these are tin, tantalum, and columbium. This Bureau of Mines report summarizes available data on the production, reserves, and occurrences of these minerals in Alaska. Alaska produces about 200,000 lb of tin per year, with historical production since 1901 estimated to have totaled 5,830,600 lb. Measured, indicated, and inferred tin reserves total over 140,000,000 Ib. Much of the tin production has been from the placer mines of the western Seward Peninsula; however, most of the reserves are in that area's lode deposits. Alaskan tin occurrences are part of a belt of tin mineralization that extends along the western coast of North and South America. The Alaskan portion of this "tin belt" comprises placer occurrences and lode occurrences of five major types: greisen, vein, skarn, pegmatite, and volcanogenic massive sulfide. Greisen and vein occurrences are the most abundant, but skarn deposits have historically been the most economically important. Columbium and tantalum have not been produced in Alaska; however, they may be recoverable as byproducts of tin, tungsten, gold, or uranium mining. Approximately 135,000 Ib of columbium oxide (Cb205) are inferred within the Tofty placer deposits in the Manley Hot Springs district.

It is generally recognized that the productivity and ultimate recovery of an oil well may be reduced as a result of reduction in permeability of the sand at the well bore by invasion of filtrates and clay particles from drilling fluids. As a means of determining whether a sand has been "damaged" from these sources, several investigators2 3 4 5/ have developed methods of analysis based on the rate of increase in bottom-hole pressure while a well is shut in. Because of growing recognition of the importance of completion practices as related to the quantity of oil that may be recovered from wells, the Bureau of Mines has studied completion practices in California and the Midcontinent area. Well-interference and pressure-buildup tests were completed Ear seven wells in the Scurry Reef field to determine the effective permeability in the reservoir.6/ Also, a study was made of the pressure-decline curves obtained from 35 water-input wells in 5 different production areas of northeastern Oklahoma and eastern Kansas.7/

MEANING OF TERM, The term "minerals" when used in grants or in reservations or instruments of conveyance is not limited to metals or metalliferous deposits, whether contained in veins that have well-defined walls or in beds or deposits that are irregular and are found at or near the surface or otherwise. The term "mineral" in its commercial sense has been defined as any organic substance found in nature having sufficient value sepa- rate from its situs as part of the earth to be mined, quarried, or dug for its own sake or its own specific use. The Remote Working Level Monitor (RWLM) is an instrument used to remotely monitor the Rn-daughter concentrations and the Working Level (WL). It is an ac powered, microprocessor based instrument which multiplexes two independent detector units to a single central processor unit (CPU). The CPU controls the actuation of the detector units and processes and outputs the data received from these remote detector units. The remote detector units are fully automated and require no manual operation once they are set up. They detect and separate the alpha emitters of RaA and RaC' as well as detecting the beta emitters of RaB and RaC. The resultant pulses from these detected radioisotope; are transmitted to the CPU for processing. The programmed microprocessor performs the mathematical manipulations necessary to output accurate Rn-daughter concentrations and the WL. A special subroutine within the program enables the RWLM to run and output a calibration procedure on command. The data resulting from this request can then be processed in a separate program on most computers capable of BASIC programming. The calibration program results in the derivation of coefficients and beta efficiencies which provides calibrated coefficients and beta efficiencies.

This report 3/gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Lander County, Nev., made from March 29 to April 20 and from May 9 to May 21, 1938, during which virtually all of the mining districts n the county were visited. No attempt has been made to include in this report all the mines and prospects in the various mining districts, and it should be stated that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no. bearing on its merits. The report rovers the situation of the various districts, types of ore deposits, ownership and description of mines and prospects, information on past and current activity, and other information of economic interest likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The names of the various districts mentioned are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When originally organized, the districts embraced large areas with no well-defined boundaries, so that the names have little geographical significance.

This paper is one of a series describing; mining and milling methods and costs being published by the Bureau of Mines. It deals with the mineral resources of western South Dakota and describes the mining and milling of tantalite and associated amblygonite by the Black Hills Tin Co. and the Fansteel Mining Corporation. This report describes instrumentation which is part of a system for extinguishing mine fires by pumping material through surface boreholes in order to seal off all underground passageways leading to the fire area. Major instrumentation systems include a closed circuit television probing system and an acoustic seal checking system. The latter consists of a speaker probe, a receiver probe and related signal processing equipment. All probes can be winch-deployed down a 6-inch diameter borehole. The CCTV unit can be rotated 360 degrees in the horizontal plane, and contains sufficient lighting to reliably assay conditions for sealing or rescue within a 200 foot radius. The acoustic seal checker monitors the completion of a seal as it progresses by use of probes lowered through boreholes on either side of the seal.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated the equilibrium of the system potassium carbonate (K2C03) potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) potassium bisulfide (KHS) carbon dioxide (C02) hydrogen sulfide (H2S) water (H20). Partial pressures of hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and water vapor were measured at 70° to 130° C. over solutions of 20-, 30-, and 40-percent-equivalent potassium carbonate containing from 20 to 3,000 grains of equivalent hydrogen sulfide per gallon of solution. This study was made to obtain equilibrium data for evaluating the feasibility of using solutions of hot potassium carbonate for removing, hydrogen sulfide from gas mixtures. The equilibrium partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide may be correlated with the ratio of the molal concentrations of the solutes (KHC03) (KHS)/ (K2CO3). The relationship is shown graphically for the 30- and 40-percent solutions. Once this ratio is determined, the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide can be obtained from the curves. The equilibrium data show that effective removal of both carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide can be achieved simultaneously with hot solutions of potassium carbonate.

This report describes the development and application of PHASEQ/FLOW, a geochemical flow simulator capable of describing the dynamic changes in chemical composition of an aqueous solution during flow in a permeable medium. The solution components can react through intraaqueous reactions, redox, precipitation, or dissolution. The assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium ensures maximum generality with respect to the number of species and components possible; however, the fluid flow itself is limited to one-dimension. The report describes several applications: generic batch equilibria, flowing equilibria, uranium roll-front deposition, and roll-front leaching.

This Bureau of Mines report presents three methods for designing bulkheads to impound water underground: (1) thin and thick plate design; (2) South African plug design; and (3) single and double bulkhead seal design. Related areas critical to the long-term effectiveness of underground water impoundments are also addressed. These include bulk-head anchorage, concrete specifications and placement, the grouting of permeable strata, and the sizing of barrier pillars. A case study involving hydrostatic tests conducted on a single bulkhead seal constructed in the Safety Research Coal Mine of the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center is presented in an appendix.

This report contains the results of a technical and economic evaluation of conceptual systems for the underground mining, rubblization, and in situ retorting of deep oil shale deposits. Study efforts were first directed towards evaluation of the applicable geology, associated minerals, rock mechanics, in situ retorting, access mining, ventilation, rubblization, safety, and environmental impact factors. Conceptual systems were synthesized and then evaluated against these factors from both a technical and limited economic viewpoint. The results of these evaluations were then analyzed and, based upon this analysis, the following two systems were selected for further study: System II: Room and Pillar-Vertical Drill and Blast System IV: Tunnel Boring-Horizontal Ring Drill and Blast Due to the large number of variables to be considered, a computer program was developed and utilized to provide data for the cost trade-off studies and economic analysis. Results of the early computer runs indicated the value of the tool available? in the computer program and led to an extension in the contract to determine the sensitivity of the systems to several of the more apparent significant variables. These results in turn led to a refinement in the design assumptions and a better understanding of the technical and economic options available to an owner-operator of a Vertical Modified In Situ Shale Oil Extraction System. This report is submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of Contract Number 50241073 by Fenix & Scisson, Inc. to the Denver Mining Research Center, United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines.
