The Minister for Roads and Traffic's opening speech highlights some of the topics to be covered in the conference with particular reference to the Channel Tunnel, the recent breakthrough of whose service tunnel marked a historic moment three and a half years after passing of the Channel Tunnel Act and which was the first example in recent years of a major transport project entirely privately funded. The Minister also mentioned the building of UK road tunnels, research and development, and the role of UK consultants in the single European market

Industrial minerals are extremely important to downstream industries and in our everyday lives. Their ontribution to the UK economy and to society as a whole is greatly underestimated. The industrial minerals sector is lacing increased pressures - environmental and competitive - both at home and abroad. These pressures are likely to increase. The Government, working in conjunction with the industry, can help the industry to meet these challenges. The role of Government is to establish a dialogue w ith the industry, to find out what its concerns are.and to ensure that these are taken into account in the draw ing up of policies that affect it. There is also a role for it in exploring, with industry, the linkages between environmental improvement and competitive advantage, and giving, w herever possible, early warning about regulatory developments. In order to maximise the effectiveness of links, industry needs to be coherently organised and represented both in the UK and in the European Union (EU).

Offering 1000 hour salt spray protection, the KEYCOAT 1000 coating presents no chipping, cracking or deformation when hammered or flexed through 90 degrees or more. This cost-effective metal protection system features lubrication performance equal to molybdenum disulphide and Poly Tetra Fluoro Ethylene (PTFE) grease providing complete anti-seize protection whilst aiding assembly and disassembly. In addition, the coating is impervious to acids, alkalis, solvents and attack by oils and all fuels. KEYCOAT 1000 has been exhaustively tested in three main industry sectors - automotive, heavy earthinoving vehicles and chemical - where it lias been proven to outperform conventional systems in all respects and as the film formed is less than one thousandth of an inch thick (typically 20 microns), it rarely presents the engineer with any tolerance difficulties. IMM B, vol.99, 1990, p.B139-B152, which he contends minimises the role of the Portuguese state organisation Servico de Fomento Mineriro (SFM); the author, in response, once again thanks all SFM staff but reiterates his conclusion that Neves-Corvo was discovered through an amalgamation of exploration results and interpretations from different sub-disciplines and geoscientists
