Teck Metals Ltd. operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Since 1997, KIVCETTM flash smelting technology has been utilized for the treatment of zinc plant residues and lead concentrates. Trail Operations’ furnace uses four water-cooled jackets for bullion tapping. This paper provides an overview of KIVCET bullion tapping for the past 16 years, and discusses successes and challenges encountered with respect to operations, training and monitoring.

Hydraulic fracture is a frequently used technique in the Oil and Gas industry to create high permeability pathways for extraction of hydrocarbons. Numerical simulation of this method poses challenges such as representation of 3D fractures, propagation of randomly oriented fractures in 3D media, enabling fluid leak-off from fracture to poro-elastic medium. We have developed a numerical model using the Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM) to simulate fluid driven fracture in a poro-elastic medium that addresses these challenges. In the GFEM framework, special enrichment functions are used to augment the solution space in the displacement and pore-pressure fields in order to accurately capture the response in the vicinity of the fracture. Adaptive refinement of the finite element mesh is also employed to facilitate accurate and efficient solution of the model. Our model fully couples fluid flow in the fracture, represented with the lubrication approximation, to the geo-mechanical behavior of the bulk poroelastic rock, comprised of an elastic rock skeleton saturated with fluid. Fracturing fluid exerts traction on the fracture surface and is also allowed to leak-off into the poroelastic medium using a transfer function approach. Stress intensity factors (SIFs) are evaluated based on the Contour Integral Method, accounting for the fluid pressure on the fracture surface. The SIFs are used to govern a full 3-D evolution of the fracture. Verification of the model is performed for known behaviors for the poroelastic response and fluid flow in the fracture.

Microseismic (MS) methods offer one of the few ways to monitor a 3D volume of rock and essentially see into the rockmass and the regions of real time rock fracture. This is a critical component when considering workplace safety as well as the economic viability of a mining operation. New Gold Inc. New Afton Mine, an intermediate copper-gold mining company located 350km northeast of Vancouver in the south-central interior of British Columbia, Canada, has recently installed a MS system to help understand the block caving process in space and time. For a block cave mining operation is it important to utilize the MS events to map out the seismogenic zone related to the regions of stress concentration and fracturing mechanisms which lead to caving. The geological setting within the local array is complex, consisting of several distinct lithologies with unique material properties that each affect the microseismic signal differently. The block cave consists of a muck filled void, also affecting the seismic waveform path. This paper compares the use of a single velocity model to a variable velocity model which accounts for the differing lithologies and cave. The variable velocity method determined 3D raypaths for all source to receiver possibilities through five irregular shaped geological domains and the estimated cave. For calibration blast data, the variable velocity model is found to successfully decrease the error for event location from an average of 38m to 20m (47% improvement), and its importance to location accuracy is expected to increase as the cave develops in size.

Cemented carbides or hard metals that generally consist of hard tungsten carbide and a tough metal binder such as cobalt are important in many segments of the world economy, ranging from automobile related components to machining, cutting, and drilling tools. For metal cutting operations such as turning and milling, replaceable cemented carbide inserts are frequently used. The exposure of inserts to very severe conditions (e.g. temperatures as high as 1000°C) in combination with very high loads, limits their lifetime. When the tools and components are scrapped, they are collected with a view to recovering the tungsten carbide and cobalt due to both their environmental aspects and their strategic importance. In this work, a selective electrolysis process was used for recovery of WC powder particles from cemented carbide scraps. The WC-10Co and WC-10Co-VC up to 3 wt.% VC was produced using powder metallurgy route. The mean particle size of WC, Co and VC were selected as 2.5, l.5 and 2.2 µm respectively. Referring to electrochemical curves of WC-10Co cemented carbides in hydrochloric acid solutions with different concentrations, the recovery rate was enhanced in IN acid. Therefore, this solution was selected for recycling of all samples. The surfaces of as-produced and corroded specimens were investigated using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Detection of corrosion products was provided by energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). According to results, the selective electrolysis process could be useful in the recycling of scrap carbide materials, although more studies should be undertaken on economical aspects of the process and the quality of samples produced using recovered powders.

Motivated by safety considerations, logistical issues, transportation cost savings, product diversification, and marketing preferences, several uranium producers are revisiting their business models and supply chain configuration and, instead of selling dried yellowcake to downstream refineries, they are moving to build in-house calcining facilities. Drying and calcining plants are relatively low-cost facilities to build and operate. The execution period of a typical yellowcake drying and calcining project is also relatively short and alternative construction methodologies, such as modularized solutions, are available. The drying and calcining technologies used for yellowcake are relatively mature, environmentally contained, and well supported by qualified vendors. The drying and calcining circuits also seamlessly integrate with upstream and downstream operations. These either produce a dried yellowcake or calcined U3O8 which are notably safer and easier to transport and market. This paper presents an overview of the recommended technology and project development considerations for yellowcake drying and calcining facilities.

INTRODUCTION FOR THE purpose of this paper, western bituminous coal is defined as steam coal produced in Alberta and southeastern British Columbia for sale primarily to railways and industries. Before examining present and future markets of this industry, it is proper to review briefly financial and operating conditions within the industry. The report of the Royal Commission on Coal, 1946, supplies financial data from which some conclusions may be drawn. In 1944, the industry as defined above had share capital of $24,886,696. In the fifteen years 1930 to 1944, inclusive, the industry produced: 44,364,211 tons of coal. The profit on this tonnage amounted to $4,678,382.58, which represented 10.6 cents per ton of production. Miscellaneous earnings increased the amount available for dividends to shareholders to a total of $8,487,952.41, which is equal to, 19.1 cents per ton of production. Dividends actually paid in this fifteen-year period amounted to $12,332,040.64, which represented an annual average rate of 3.40 per cent on share capital. It is worthy of note that, in 1944, the net current position of the industry, including investments, was $8,753,874.51. The writer believes that the financial position of the industry with respect to capital, current financial position, and net earnings, has not significantly changed from the fifteen-year period out-lined above. The figures quoted indicate the following situation: (1) The western bituminous coal industry is adequately financed. (2) The industry has followed a conservative dividend policy and has accrued funds for contingencies. (3) The industry has sold its production at very reasonable prices as evidenced by its moderate earnings per ton of production.

T HE APPROACH to maintenance must always be ?completely positive: there must be no question of putting off difficult problems until it is more convenient to tackle them. By this it is meant that a piece of machinery or equipment which, by experience, is known to be due for a check should not, merely because it appears to be operating satisfactorily, be left until it reaches a critical .condition and breaks down. The mentality of the Maintenance Manager must be completely orderly and methodical and he should, in fact, possess a ledger-book mind, having a debit and credit outlook. The debit side would be that applying to time out of service, cost in wages, material, personnel involved, etc., and the credit side that relating to continuous operational time of the locomotive and therefore to the ultimate benefit of the mine and the personnel who work there. The Maintenance Manager is not concerned with design problems, and although he and the personnel under his jurisdiction are not engaged in productive work, he and his staff do, nevertheless, add greatly to or detract from the overall efficiency of the organization. Provided the machinery placed in his care is good to start with, he must take the best steps he possibly can to keep it running. However, he may, on occasion, be forced to improvise and this is where the ingenuity of a clever man rises to the occasion.

Introduction Baffin Island is still too in-accessible to be of interest to the mining industry. However, twenty years ago few people dreamed of mining iron ?ore in Labrador. A journey by air to the most remote places in the Arctic is today no more remarkable than a trip to Europe, and the technical difficulties of mining minerals of high value are not insurmountable. Some ?observations concerning the geology and mineral possibilities of Baffin Island, the largest of the Arctic islands, may therefore interest the members of the Institute, in spite of problematic practical value of the subject. The following short account is mainly based on observations made during the Baird Expedition of the Arctic Institute of North America last summer 1950), and on information available from earlier expeditions. Early Work Baffin Island was one of the first parts of Canada to attract prospectors. Frobisher sent a shipload of rocks, which he believed contained precious metals, from Baffin Island to England. This attempt, however, was a failure and no further serious prospecting work has, so far as I know, been done. During the past few years geological mapping has been carried out by the Geological Survey of Canada (Fortier. Davison, 1949-1950) in the southern parts ?of the island, along the coast of Hudson strait. In 1942, Weeks mapped the coast from Pangnirtung to the head of Cumberland fiord, and Netteling river up to Netteling lake. In the northern parts of the island, only scattered observations have been made ?by Bell, Watkins, Baird, and others.

"Titanium aluminides are structural intermetallics which offer an attractive combination of high temperature strength and light weight. For such properties, these intermetallic alloys have become front-runners in replacing nickel-based superalloys used for several high temperature applications. These alloys are produced from metallic titanium, aluminum and master alloys involving an expensive and difficult process. A low cost alternative to current industrial production method is the new modified aluminothermic process which directly reduces titanium oxide (TiO2) to titanium aluminides. Nevertheless, this process has itself significant challenges in achieving alloys free of oxide inclusions; the close densities of the slag and the titanium aluminides makes slag/molten metal separation a challenging task. Usually, the alloy produced requires a second refining step. In this study, thermodynamic calculations based on CALPHAD method were performed to determine the solidification path and an attempt has been made to develop a criterion to increase the density deference between the slag and the alloy by alloying with appropriate elements. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were utilized to examine the microstructure and phase selection of three Ti-Al alloys produced by the aluminothermic reaction, including the as-cast, refined in a controlled atmosphere and inert-gas-refined alloys. The composition range of the alloys studied was restricted to the a2-Ti3Al + ?-TiAl phase field (Ti-30Al) in the binary Ti-Al phase diagram leading to a lamellar structure with different complex intermetallics as shown in Figure 1.INTRODUCTIONTiAl based alloys are promising structural materials for high temperature aerospace and automotive applications. This is due to some attractive properties such as low density, high specific strength, high specific stiffness and high temperature strength retention (Wen-bin, Xue-wen, Hong-fei, & Yong-feng, 2011). These alloys have become leading candidates to replace Ni-based super alloys in gas turbine engines. Replacement of Ni-based super alloy parts with titanium aluminides is expected to reduce the structural weight of high performance gas turbine engines by as much as 20–30% (Kothari, Radhakrishnan, Sudarshan, & Wereley, 2012)."

The rock breakage process in drilling is a main source of noise in roof bolting operations, especially when hard rocks are encountered. Proper control of drilling operation can provide an opportunity to improve energy efficiency of drilling and to reduce noise and heat generated from bit-rock friction. Drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings to confirm this noise-reduction strategy. Preliminary results show that the drilling parameters, penetration and rotational rates can be controlled to achieve in a desirable range in drilling medium hard rock. Based on the theoretical and experimental studies, rational drilling control strategy is developed for noise control while maintaining a safe and productive roof bolting operation. Applying this strategy in underground roof bolting operation, the noise exposure of roof bolter operators will be significantly reduced.

"The notion of ""value"" has always been a subjective and contentious issue. Indeed, Value is in the eye of the beholder. There are varied methods and practices for valuing property, as there are industries in which they are applied. For example, there are ""replacement value"", ""insurance value, ""salvage value"", ""appraised value"", ""book value"" and ""fair market value"", to name a few, although in the mining industry, valuations usually refer to fair market value.In the Canadian mining industry, at present, there are no comprehensive regulations or guidelines that specify which approaches or methods are appropriate for use in the valuation of mineral projects. In January 1999, The Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. Among the approaches to be considered, are included the following: the Discounted Cash Flow Approach, the Cost Approach, the Option Pricing Approach and Market Comparables Approach. In addition, methodologies differ depending on whether the project is at the exploration stage or the producing stage.The CIMVal committee expects that its final report will form the basis for a standard Canadian Code for the valuation of mineral properties."

"In dump leaching, the efficiency of metal extraction from ores is strongly influenced by the mechanisms of fluid flow. Particle size distribution acts as a fundamental parameter in the determination of fluid flow properties in packed ore beds. In this study, we investigated the particle size distribution in dump leaching by using image analysis technique. The results showed that the particles in the dump varied from smaller than 2 cm to larger than 200 cm in diameter. P80 was calculated to be 200 cm, which was significantly higher than the historical data used by the operation. P25, P50 and P80 were found to increase non-linearly with increasing depth towards the toe of the dump, suggesting the segregation of fine and coarse particles. The image analysis results were verified by applying the rock fragmentation models. The model with the Swebrec function was found to be in better agreement with the image analysis results. Future research will investigate the effect of particle size distribution on the behaviour of fluid flow.INTRODUCTION Fluid flow plays an essential role in the extraction of valuable metals using heap/dump leaching (Amos et al., 2009). The rates of the chemical leaching reactions and microbial activities determine metal concentrations in the leachates and therefore the efficiency of the metal extraction. The reaction rates are influenced by two fundamental processes: transport phenomenon and reaction kinetics (Bouffard & Dixon, 2001). The transport phenomenon refers to the percolation of fluids through channels and pores in a packed ore bed, which carries lixiviants and reaction products to/from ore surfaces by convection and diffusion. The percolation rate of the leaching solution is determined by the hydraulic conductivity of the packed ore bed, which is a function of the permeability and the degree of saturation (Guzman et al., 2008). Permeability, an intrinsic property of a packed ore bed, is strongly influenced by the particle size distribution of the ore grains (Bouffard & Dixon, 2001). Hence, the objective of this study was to investigate the particle size distribution in dump leaching."

"Evaluating resources and reserves requires the reliable modelling of geological domains and their grades. “Multiple point statistics” simulation is a relatively new geostatistical method to generate complex, high-resolution geological models by extracting high-order spatial relations from training images. A method based on combining multiple training images is developed to obtain the correct amount of large-scale continuity and short-scale variability. A calibration process matches the geological spatial variability between the final realizations and the drillhole dataset. A case study with data from the Red Dog mine, Alaska, United States, shows an appropriate reproduction of short-scale variability along boundaries between geological units.RÉSUMÉ L’évaluation des ressources et des réserves exige une modélisation fiable des domaines géologiques et de leur teneur. La simulation par « statistique multipoint » est une méthode géostatistique relativement nouvelle pour générer des modèles géologiques complexes à haute résolution par l’extraction de relations spatiales d’ordre supérieur à partir d’images d’entraînement. Une méthode basée sur la combinaison de multiples images d’entraînement est développée afin d’obtenir la bonne quantité de continuité à grande échelle et de variabilité à petite échelle. Un processus d’étalonnage fait correspondre la variabilité géologique spatiale entre les réalisations finales et l’ensemble des données de forage. "The Endako molybdenum deposit is located 160 km west of Prince George, British Columbia. It occurs within the main body of the Francois Lake Intrusions, a composite batholith consisting of early, middle and late intrusive phases. The ore deposit is confined to Endako Quartz Monzonite, a middle phase intrusion, which is bound on the north by Carey Alaskite and on the south by Francois Granite, both late stage intrusions. In the mine aretz, the Endako Quartz Monzonite has been intruded by pre-ore dikes of quartzfeldspar porphyry and porphyritic granite, and by post-ore dikesof basalt.The Endako deposit forms a west-northwest trending body that has a strike length of 3360 m and an apparent width of 370 m. It consists of four structurally distinct zones: Endako East, Endako West, Denak East and Denak West. Principal sulphide minerals of the deposit are pyrite and molybdenite, accompanied by magnetite and minor chalcopyrite. Galena, associated with wulfenite and bismuthinite, occurs in some ores of Endako West and Denak as minute inclusions in molybdenite. The sulphides and associated minerals are hosted by quartz veins which occur principally in vein systems. Hydrothermal alteration accompanying ore mineralization has pervasively kaolinized the quartz monzonite host rock, and has locally produced K-feldspar and quartz-sericite-pyrite envelopes on quartz veins.Primary structural controls of the deposit are southwesterly dipping vein systems which strike 110° in the Endako zones, 110° to 130° in Denak East and 170° in Denak West. Secondary structural controls are northeasterly striking vein systems that dip northwesterly in Endako East and southeasterly in Denak. Domal uplift accompanying the rise of latest stage magma is considered to have caused intense dilatant deformation along older west-northwest trending shear zones, producing an elongated structural host for ore deposition."

"Darcy's law is widely used to describe the oil and gas flow characteristics in the multi-pore media reservoir. However, the low-velocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media reservoir under low permeability conditions. Meanwhile, the high-velocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media near the wellbore. The gas flow velocities in coal in different deformation stage under different gas pressure gradient were tested and the relationships between gas flow velocity and gas pressure gradient were discussed, which can help us to investigate the transformation conditions of gas linear flow and gas nonlinear flow in coal. The results showed that the gas flow in the coal under low effective stress environment can be described by Darcy's law. The low-velocity non-Darcy flow of gas gradually occurred and the start-up pressure gradient increased in the coal as the effective stress increased. The low-velocity non-Darcy flow of gas also occurred in the coal at the yield deformation stage, however, the start-up pressure gradient decreased as the effective stress increased in this stage. In post-peak stage, the highvelocity non-Darcy flow of gas occurred in the coal under low effective stress environment. The gas flow in the coal gradually returned to be Darcy flow as the effective stress increased. The mechanism of the phenomenon is discussed based on the experimental results. The research results can be used to guide well test analysis and prediction of oil-gas production. INTRODUCTIONThe oil and gas flow in original multi-pore media reservoir are usually regarded as steady and linear processes and can be described by Darcy’s law. However, the low-velocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media reservoir under low permeability conditions. Meanwhile, the highvelocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media near the wellbore or workface. The gas flow in the multi-pore media even may be unsteady under some conditions such as gas emission and outburst.The phenomenon of underground water low-velocity flow in clays was deviated from Darcy’s law was found in the end of the nineteenth century (King, 1898). The deviation from Darcy’s law was later reported and investigated more (Swartzendruber, 1962; Miller and Low, 1963). These researches revealed that the start-up pressure gradient exists under low permeability conditions. Klinkenberg (1941) proposed that the permeability constant as determined with gases is dependent upon the property of the gas, and is a linear function of the reciprocal mean pressure. This effect can be explained by taking into account the phenomena of slip, which are related closely to the mean free paths of the gas molecules."

In this study the effect of solidification rate, T6 and T7 heat treatments on thermal fatigue resistance of A319 aluminum was investigated. Increasing of the solidification rate improved the thermal fatigue resistance of the alloy by refinement of the microstructure. The most sensible areas for thermal fatigue crack growth were the eutectic zones, T6 and T7 heat treatments improved the thermal fatigue resistance of the alloy by enhancing of the matrix resistance against the crack propagation. The slight reduction of the thermal fatigue resistance after T7 heat treatment is attributed to coarsening of the precipitates which reduces the matrix resistance.

A trend in mining exploration is to increase the number of geophysical parameters collected and interpreted for geological features in a given area. Airborne technology now allows us to simultaneously combine electromagnetic, gravity, aeromagnetic and radiometric surveys. We report the results of a multiparameter survey conducted in the area of Kamiskotia, Ontario. This area is located near and on the West side of the multi-metalliferous Kidd Creek deposit. Various metallic occurrences are reported in the studied area. Integrating multiple parameters in the interpretation produces a more detailed pseudogeological map than what has already been published. 3D interpretation has been undertaken using some of these parameters and suggests that future work is required in 3D earth model solutions in order to fully use all parameters.

"Exampling of the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, this study investigates the application of the Drilling Survey System (DRISS) in both Drilling and Blasting (D&B)- and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)-excavated sections. In the D&B section, a nonlinear relationship exists between drilling energy and uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass, in which a reasonable coefficient of determination can be analyzed statistically. Additionally, the DRISS accurately predicted an unfavorable section with a valuable position. The magnitude of uniaxial compressive strength back calculated using DRISS data also matches those acquired from geological investigations with different approaches. Study results indicate that the DRISS is an effective tool for fore-probing of both D&B- and TBM-excavated tunnels. INTRODUCTIONModern advancements in geological and geophysical investigations, and drilling techniques, have provided valuable information for detecting and interpreting geological conditions of rock tunnels with a resolution of several to ten of meters (Brückl et al., 2001, 2008, Lorang et al., 2005). Nevertheless, construction risks remain considerable during tunnel excavation, especially when a tunnel was excavated by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Predictions of the local fault, shear zone, and other minor geological features, which may cause moderate collapse or excessive deformation of rocks surrounding the tunnel, before tunnel excavation is highly desirable for high-quality tunnel construction and economically efficient project management.Rather than conventional geophysical prospection methodologies, which always favor large-scale investigation with moderate precision, this study focuses on the drilling method probing ahead of a tunnel. The goal of such an investigation is not only to prevent catastrophic collapse, but also to provide quantitative or semi-quantitative information for estimation of the mechanical parameters of rock mass.For the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, a drilling survey system is adopted for fore probing. Data collected from both drilling and blasting (D&B) and TBM-excavated sections are analyzed statistically and discussed. The 50,000-ton-per-day Concentrator and Crushing Plant, complete with its related water supply, tailings disposal and concentrate handling systems, was started up in a five-month period, with the entire plant obtaining its design capacity six months after the first mill became operational. Individual mill lines, with their spiral circuits, achieved design capacities within a week after the first treatment of ore through each mill. Construction and start-up proceeded together in many areas of the plant, and considerable organization and cooperation between the Owner, the Engineer and the Contractors permitted a smooth transition from construction to operation. PLANT DESCRIPTION THE Carol Lake Plant of the Iron Ore Company of Canada l1as been well described in various technical magazines. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief outline of the start-up of the con-centration complex. This start-up was accomplished in a period of five months, with the plant producing one million tons of concentrate and achieving its design-rated tonnage less than six months after the first ore was treated.
