The implementation of Energy Management within the global mining industry has advanced significantly during the past 20 years. Consequently, the industry?s knowledge of energy efficiency improvement opportunities, more energy efficient technologies, renewable energy technologies, energy procurement practices, and most importantly, practical approaches for integrating the energy management best practices into business processes and operational procedures has improved greatly. Based on 25 years of experience leading the management of energy in mining operations and the Canadian mining community, the author discusses the key building blocks in the evolution toward becoming an energy efficient mining facility. Sustainable energy management depends on the internalization of the behaviors related to the effective energy use by a mining organization. The paper outlines the typical business drivers that stimulate top management commitment to allocate the resources necessary for this to happen. It also explores the barriers that mining companies must overcome to maintain the commitment. Additionally, it will advocate the need for the application of the principles of organizational change management as part of the energy management implementation process. The question regarding how energy management can be made to happen in a way that is practical for an established organization is answered by providing the details of the framework for energy management, the methodology for controlling energy use, and the roadmap for integrating energy as a key business parameter and production process input variable. An Energy Management System standard developed within the Mining Association of Canada?s ( MAC ) Towards Sustainable Mining ( TSM ) initiative has played an important role in increasing the capacity of the Canadian mining industry to manage energy. The impact of the application the MAC TSM Energy/GHG Management Protocol by Canadian mining companies will be discussed. In June of 2011, the international ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems standard was finalized and published for use. The structure of ISO 50001 will be outlined along with its applicability to the mining industry. Opportunities for practically improving mining energy performance along with the most appropriate current new technologies will be identified. A brief discussion of case studies will be included that demonstrates the successful implementation of Energy Conservation Measures ( EAC?s ) and economic benefits. In conclusion, thoughts on important areas of research and development related to increasing mining energy efficiency will be provided.

An application of the statistical and computer techniques in basic mineral processing research is illustrated by means of a case history involving the study of starch adsorption on calcite. Multi-factorial experimental designs and computer techniques were used for determining the effect of different system variables, such as solution pH, sodium oleate concentration and starch concentration, and to obtain a mathematical model of the response. Response maps enabled the investigators to see the effects clearly and to predict the results of changes in factor levels within the design region. Use of time-shared computers and plotters made data processing and analysis efficient and relatively inexpensive.

In the construction industry, project changes constitute a major cause of delay, disruption, cost increases, poor quality and unsatisfying performance. They are also known as a main factor of litigation between the owners and constructors. Construction projects are essentially process-based, and with the critical role of Information Technology (IT) in this industry, projects, especially mega projects, are being managed remotely. The volume of data and documents, such as Requests For Information (RFIs), different types of Change Requests (CRs) and Project Change Notices (PCNs), being transferred and exchanged amongst the stakeholders of a project is considerable. The circulation of these documents amongst project stakeholders still heavily relies on two methods or levels for management of change process; Conventional (fully paper-based, Faxes, Snail mails) and Electronic or semi-automated (Email, Internet, PDF files). These two methods are dependent on human discipline to follow specified processes which often break down because of human nature. This creates serious compliance problems. It is hypothesized here that fully that automated process-based management of change can lead to better compliance, more efficient management of change, and reduction of time and cost of data exchange. An approach of doing this is presented in this paper. Ultimately, its impact should improve project performance. Conclusions are presented on time savings and improved compliance.

ALTHOUGH the idea of roasting zinc concentrates in suspension had intrigued investigators for a number of years, no commercial application of a process appeared successful until the development of the "Cominco" process. The efficiency and high capacity of this process may be judged by the fact that nearly all other electrolytic plants and many zinc retort plants in the world use this method. A furnace of the Cominco type can roast without special preparatory treatment and without supplementary fuel, mineral sulphides such as zinc sulphides and iron sulphides containing varying amounts of moisture at any desired rate ranging from one-half up to full capacity. The full capacity of a unit is in general about three times that of a multiple hearth furnace of the same size. "The natural stage of deep mines operation is a closure of unnecessary shafts. It is extremely important to ensure a proper shaft closure to avoid stability loss and the associated damage to surface facilities in the future. For the still active shafts, it can be done by a dedicated shaft closure design, but even then, depending on the shaft closure method, it may be necessary to perform regular shaft inspections. The paper presents a short overview of shaft closure methods and available tools and devices developed in the last time for such shaft inspections. INTRODUCTION The natural stage of deep mines operation, commonly occurring after depletion of the reserves of mined materials, is a closure of unnecessary shafts. All over the world, the number of liquidated shafts grows continuously and the problem of shafts disposal is especially critical for deep shafts. The typical depth of 600 m of currently liquidated shafts in Poland may already be seen as a challenging task. The greater is the challenge of shaft closure in Germany where the last active coal mines for shafts with a depth of up to 1,300 m have been recently closed. It is therefore extremely important to ensure a proper shaft closure to avoid stability loss and the associated damage to surface facilities in the future. For the still active shafts, it can be done by a dedicated shaft closure design, but even then, depending on the shaft closure method, it may be necessary to perform regular shaft inspections. In many cases, it is more important to inspect old, abandoned shafts, where the wall stability or even liner type are not fully known. SHAFT CLOSURE METHODS Abandoning a shaft is a complicated task, as shafts, being the link between the surface and an underground network of workings, disturb hydrogeological and gaseous conditions in the rock mass (Sztelak, 1991). Closure procedures at older mine sites have been carried out in accordance with earlier legislative requirements. For very old shafts (+100 years), it means in many cases only a sealing of the shaft entrances by means of timber or concrete slabs. In the 20th century, the shafts were also closed by means of filling with grainy materials, but even then the retrospective activities at abandoned mine sites were extremely limited and in most cases no further monitoring measures were performed. The possible consequence of an improper shaft closure and lack of monitoring is presented in Figure 1."

Surface wave imaging is a relatively new seismic technique that generates subsurface depth images without having to drill boreholes into the ground, and is rapidly becoming a standard tool in non-destructive geotechnical characterization. This paper presents a case study of the application of these surface wave techniques to image shallow abandoned mine workings at the Montague Gold Mines district near Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This district has numerous steeply dipping narrow vein workings from historical mining activity, and has actively subsiding and collapsing crown pillars. Due to the rugged conditions at the site and the relative narrowness of the openings (often less than 1 m), a surface seismic system was developed that had improved portability and lateral resolution over other available seismic imaging systems. Seismic surveys were conducted over two sites where independent evidence indicated the presence of shallow mine workings. At one site, a comparative gravity survey was also conducted. The seismic data was processed to generate velocity vs depth images. Overall, the velocity images show vertical zones of zero velocity in the same lateral positions where historical mapping, current subsidence and gravity surveys indicate the presence of steeply dipping workings. Further, the velocity sections are consistent with the thickness of the till cover at each site and the possible weakening of crown pillars at one of the sites.

"Abstract - The Eel River area in the southwestern Miramichi terrane of New Brunswick contains a complete calc-alkaline suite of volcanic rocks that are interlayered with intervals of sedimentary and polylithic fragmental rocks, and are overlain by a thick sedimentary sequence. This package, collectively referred to as the Meductic Group, was deposited in a submerged volcanic arc setting interpreted to be part of the Popelogan arc. Rifting of this arc led to the development of the Tetagouche-Exploits back-arc basin, and formation of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in bimodal volcanic rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp in the northeastern Miramichi Terrane. Unlike the Bathurst Mining Camp, volcanic rocks in the southeastern Miramichi Highlands form a continuous calc-alkaline suite characterized by increasing Zr/TiO2 with increasing SiO2, in part resulting from progressive coupled assimilation and fractional crystallization of nested magma systems. Slumping of semi-consolidated volcanic and sedimentary rocks in topographically unstable areas resulted in numerous slumps and debris flows that are preserved throughout the Eel River area. In the early 1990s, the discovery of a large sulfide clast in a road cut along the Benton road sparked interest in the volcanogenic massive sulfide potential of the Eel River area. Subsequent drilling intersected smaller fragments, one clast of which graded 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag, and 220 ppb Au. The intersection of thin lenses of stratiform sulfides in another drillhole indicates favorable conditions for the preservation of massive sulfides. Their subsequent incorporation into synvolcanic debris flows resulted in the transport and deposition of sulfide clasts from hydrothermal vents to more distal locations. Similar to the Buchans deposits of Newfoundland, tracing these debris flows back to their source would be beneficial from an exploration perspective. Approximately 15 km to the southwest of the Eel River area, gold-bearing base metal sulfide clasts (11.1% Zn, 6.13% Pb, 0.19% Cu, 108 ppm Ag, and 1100 ppb Au) occur within intermediate-composition volcanic rocks at Monument Brook in eastern Maine. Cet assemblage constitue le Groupe de Meductic, et a été déposé dans un environnement d’arc insulaire interprété comme une partie de l’arc de Popelogan. Le rifting de cet arc à mené au développement du bassin d’arrière-arc de Tetagouche-Exploits, et à la formation de gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les roches volcaniques bimodales du Camp Minier de Bathurst dans le nord-est de la terrane de Miramichi. Contrairement au Camp Minier de Bathurst, les roches volcaniques des hautes terres du sud-est de Miramichi constituent une suite calco-alcaline continue caractérisée par un accroissement du rapport Zr/TiO2 à des valeurs croissantes de SiO2, résultant en partie de l’assimilation progressive et de la cristallisation fractionnée de systèmes magmatiques superposés. L’effondrement de roches volcaniques et sédimentaires semi-consolidées dans des secteurs topographiquement instables est à l’origine des nombreux slumps et coulées de débris qui sont préservés dans le secteur d’Eel River. Au début des années 1990, la découverte d’un large claste de sulfures le long de la route Benton provoqué un intérêt pour le potentiel en gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les secteur d’Eel River. Demand for both gem and industrial diamonds is very strong. Synthetic production supplies industrial uses, but synthetic gems remain inferior and expensive, so the large gem market is supplied by mining. Several major mines have been depleted, and the market is receptive to new sources of high quality gems. Canada's Precambrian terrane, extending across the Canadian Shield and under the Phanerozoic cover of the Plains and Hudson Bay, has excellent potential for diamonds, but exploration conditions are difficult due to recent glaciation. Early world exploration relying on recognition of diamond in alluvial sediments was adequate to launch pre- 1900 production from India, Brazil, and Africa. Exploration success in Canada, as was the case in Russia and other more recently discovered sources, however, had to await large investments in effort supported by advanced science and technology. Canadian exploration in many ways is similar to that in other regions, relying on analysis of tectonics, indicator minerals, geophysical surveys, and multiple stages of drilling and sampling. Very different from other regions, however, is Canada's surficial environment, in which recent glaciation has caused fresh indicator minerals to be transported hundreds of km. Exploration accelerated in Canada after 1960, first in Ontario and the Arctic Islands, then in Saskatchewan in 1988, and most importantly after the Chuck Fipke - Stew Blusson discovery at Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories, in 1991 that led to the billion-dollar BHP - Dia Met Ekati Mine that opened in 1998. In 2003, production from Ekati will be supplemented by that from the similar and nearby Diavik Mine of Rio Tinto and Aber. These mines will bring Canadian output to over 10% of world supply, and will position Canada with Botswana and Russia as world leaders in production of high quality gem diamonds. There could be other mines as well, as sites across the Arctic and in the south from Alberta to Québec are being explored by an array of companies, including De Beers, other majors, and several juniors.

"Gold producers invest significant effort in mining, processing, and creating an intermediate gold doré product. Nonetheless, equal effort should be extended to the final handling and processing of the doré bar, and managing the high-purity gold produced at the fine-gold toll refiner. This detailed attention to bullion handling and refining provides rigor and confidence that the mine site is achieving, through fair and controlled methodology, the most appropriate value for the final product. With the above in mind, the following study explores the importance of preparing a set of site best-practices for bullion handling and specifically, detailing the peculiarities of sampling methodologies and the impact on assays.INTRODUCTION Gold and silver handling practices are common place at mine sites and refineries. The practices include but are not limited to smelting, ingot casting, weighing practices, and secure transportation. Proper handling and processing of the bullion material ensures that the mine site is achieving the true value of the final product. Various handling aspects can critically impact the perceived value of the bullion. A few of these particulars include weight tracking, scale recertification and calibration, refining and melting practices, melt temperature measurement, sampling, pouring, bar cleaning, furnace technology and crucible selection, and assaying. Nevertheless, this report discusses and focuses on the importance of proper sampling and molten-metal temperature measurement and their potential impact on the final doré bar value. Refining or re-melting operations achieve a proper measure of the precious metal content of its bullion when the sample accurately represents the whole bar. At first this task appears seemly straightforward, however, taking a representative sample can be challenging and is also one of the most important tasks for valuing gold during the settlement stage at the precious metal refinery. Various bullion sampling methodologies exist; including: dip sampling, granulation, drilling, cutting, and vacuum pin sampling. The Royal Canadian Mint (2009) indicated in their technical review of refinery operations that pin sampling is one of the best methods for cases where representative sampling and accuracy are required, e.g. to determine the payable metal content. Pin sampling consists of inserting a sealed glass vacuum tube (Figure 1) into the molten metal; when the molten metal contacts a purposely-designed weak portion of the glass, the seal breaks and the metal is suctioned into the hollow centre (Figure 2)."

IT IS most appropriate that this first Memorial Lecture should be given in the Province of Quebec, near the site of the first metallurgical industry in Canada. At La Forge, about seven miles north of Three Rivers, iron was produced in 1783. We are told that the early settlers obtained most of their iron-ware -stoves, kettles, axes and ploughshares -from this smelter, with its foundry and forge. The Canadian copper industry also had its beginnings in Quebec when, nearly 100 years later, in the 1880's, several small copper smelters were erected in the Eastern Townships. Later, in 1899, Canada's first aluminum smelter was built at Shawinigan. From these small beginnings has grown a vast metals industry, the export value of its products being only exceeded by that of our forest products -newsprint, pulp-wood and lumber. As we are not a large country in terms of population, our domestic capacity to consume is often small in relation to our developed capacity to produce.

ABSTRACT: As high-grade nickel sulphide ores are being depleted and processing laterite ores continues to pose challenges, the future of nickel extraction lies in low-grade ultramafic ores. Canada has large resources of low-grade ultramafic nickel sulphide ores in the Thompson Nickel Belt. Most of the deposits are high tonnage and open pittable, but have high MgO content. The main challenge in processing low-grade ultramafic ores is the presence of serpentine. Chrysotile, one of the three polymorphs of serpentine, is the most common form of asbestos. In addition, the high slurry viscosity associated with ultramafic ores makes grinding and flotation possible only at a very low solids percentage.

YOU will likely recall the accomplishments of the International Geophysical Year of 1957, with its polar expeditions, the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts and the spectacular launchings of the first artificial earth satellites. Our know ledge of the exterior of the earth was greatly increased by this international, friendly, cooperative scientific investigation. The Inter-national Union of Geodesy and Geo-physics has now been joined by the new International Union of Geological Sciences in sponsoring a similar study of the earth's interior. The program will extend from January, 1962 until December. 1964, and is known as the International Upper Mantle Project. During the T.G.Y studies of the interior of the earth were relatively neglected, even though the same international •Cooperation in obtaining simultaneous world-wide observations, by similar instruments, is required to locate and study earth-quakes, for example, as it is to study the earth's upper atmosphere. The upper mantle is 1•emote from man, as it extends from a depth of about 10 km. to perhaps 1000 km., but its practical importance is great.

"Abstract - The Orvan Brook deposit is one of several (Zn+Pb>>Cu)-rich sulfide deposits hosted by the Spruce Lake Formation (California Lake Group) in the northwestern part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. This parautochthonous deposit is hosted by a narrow band of highly deformed, locally graphitic shale that appears to conformably overlie felsic volcanic rocks of the Spruce Lake Formation, and is in tectonic contact with overlying mafic volcanic and related sedimentary rocks of the Canoe Landing Lake Formation. The Spruce Lake Formation is dominated by felsic volcanic rocks and subordinate fine-grained sedimentary rocks, and mafic volcanic rocks (Canoe Landing Lake member). The felsic volcanic rocks can be divided into aphyric and feldspar-phyric rock types. The feldspar-phyric rocks and a few of the aphyric varieties have a Zr/TiO2 ratio of 0.06, and fall into the California Lake Group field on a Y/TiO2 versus Zr/TiO2 diagram. In contrast, the aphyric felsic volcanic rocks have Zr/TiO2 ˜ 0.09 and are marked by high Zr and Th, which is consistent with highly fractionated felsic magma of Spruce Lake affinity. Major and trace element analyses of host rocks suggest that weak to moderate hydrothermal alteration developed on the south side (stratigraphic footwall) of the deposit, which is consistent with a north-younging succession. The sulfide lens strikes east-west for approximately 2.3 km, extends down-dip for at least 500 m locally, and has an average thickness of between 0.75 and 1 m, but is locally up to 5.5 m thick. The contacts of the massive sulfide lens with its host rocks are invariably sharp. Host rocks show evidence of intense ductile deformation as well as later brittle deformation. Compositional layering and sulfide breccia textures in the sulfide body are interpreted to result from deformation or tectonic enhancement of original primary layering. The deposit contains an estimated resource of 2.69 Mt grading 1.73% Pb, 5.95% Zn, 0.37% Cu, 72 g/t Ag, and 0.9 g/t Au. Similarities in bulk d34S between the Orvan Brook (+8.6‰) and the nearby Cu-rich McMaster deposit (+8.2‰) suggest a common depositional setting."

Approximately two-thirds of the annual 210,000 tons at copper refined by AMAX Inc. at the United States Metals Refining Company in Carteret, New Jersey, comes from a wide variety of copper scrap ranging from low-grade smelter scrap to wirebar-grade material. The equipment and methods used to effect such large-scale metal recycling in an urban area and the measures taken to collect and recover metal values from smelter and refinery byproducts while protecting the environment from pollution are described and discussed.

"I WOULD LIKE TO SAY how honoured I am that I have been invited to participate in this panel discussion. I have taken the liberty of narrowing my topic somewhat so that instead of speaking on the Sociology of Professions as a whole I will speak on one aspect of it, that is, on Manpower Problems in the Minerals industry of Canada, with some reference to a new social role for the professionals engaged in this industry. This probably means that I will be encroaching on areas covered or to be covered by other speakers, but I hope that when I do so I will do so from a slightly different vantage point. That is, from a sociological perspective rather than from a historical, industrial, business or professional perspective. I plan to divide my discussion into three areas, namely: (i) problems of ownership and control; (ii) environmental problems; and (iii) manpower and recruitment problems. I do not plan nor am I able to provide clear-cut solutions to the various problems I raise under these three headings. Rather, I hope that my discussion of the problems may form the basis for an extended discussion here and elsewhere. Because of the limitations of time, I will only briefly discuss the first two problem areas noted above – (i) ownership and control and (ii) environmental problems - and I plan to concentrate on the manpower issue."

"Banded iron formation rocks associated with massive sulfide lenses in the Broken Hill Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag deposit in the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex, South Africa, were investigated with respect to the geochemistry of manganiferous silicate-rich bands. Two common varieties of these are: amphibole- and garnet-rich iron formation bands. The results reveal that the former are enriched in Fe, Mg, Cu, Co and S. The garnet-rich bands are enriched in Mn, Ca, P, Pb and Ba with significant detrital contamination of Ti, AI, Zr, Cr, Y, V, Ni and Nd.The silicate-rich bands have compositions, in terms of, Si/AI, SilFe, FelMn, LalCe and Co/Zn, comparable to submarine chemical sediments which precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. The garnetand amphibole-rich bands are interpreted as ""evolved"" and ""immature"" hydrothermal sediments, respectively. The latter resulted from rapid precipitation after exhalation, whereas the former had a longer residence within sea water. The silicate-rich bands both exhibit increasing Mn/(Mn+Fe) fractions, which are consistent with a variation expected from proximal to distal depositional settings. The prevalence of garnet-rich bands over amphibole-rich bands is interpreted as the result of injection of hydrothermal fluids from a single vent situated along the northwest margin of the Broken Hill deposit."

"Comminution is an energy intensive and expensive process consuming approximately 40-50% of the total processing costs in a mining operation. This process poses an even greater challenge with gold ores due to their low elemental concentration and small particle size. Over 99.9% of the ore fed to the mill is waste which must be removed during the ore processing stage. Preconcentrating the Run of Mine (ROM) ore before feeding the mill will result in significant cost savings. In partnership with Sacré-Davey Engineering, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited identified this opportunity and is currently evaluating the implementation of sorting technology to preconcentrate the ore or upgrade the waste material at its operations. This paper will discuss the steps adopted by Agnico Eagle in the evaluation and installation of sorting technology at its operations. Since the Company has a large portfolio of operations, the first step in the project was to shortlist the operations that had the highest probability for successful application of the technology. Following this, the top three operations were selected for bench scale evaluation. The projects which showed the most economic potential were then considered for detailed evaluation and pilot plant installations. This paper provides an insight into the methodology followed by Agnico Eagle and Sacré-Davey in the evaluation of the technology.INTRODUCTION The benefits of ore sorting technology are being increasingly understood by the mining industry today. The application of ore sorting in gold mining is attractive due to the nature of the mineral distribution. The presence of high value minerals distributed in an extremely small mass of the ROM ore creates a tremendous opportunity for preconcentration with ore sorting. Since Agnico Eagle currently has a portfolio of eight operating mines and numerous development projects and exploration properties, the challenge was to identify the deposits which had the most favourable mineralogy and grade distribution for successful ore sorting. The success of ore sorting is mostly based on the minerals present in the deposit and the grade distribution. The minerals signify the amenability of the deposit for ore sorting and the kind of sensing technology to be used. On the other hand, the grade distribution demonstrates the amount of material that can be rejected without losing value. In order to understand a deposit’s characteristics, it is important to examine the sample’s behaviour with various sensors and then assay it to know its actual value. It is a common practice in the mining industry to document assay value of drill cores and/or material feeding in and out of the mill. However, those VALUES (are insufficient to understand the grade variability on a granular basis. To capture the ore variability in very high resolution and significantly improve the selectivity of the material feeding the mill, it is vital to assay the samples on a rock-by-rock basis, as this is the level of resolution which will be examined by the ore sorter during sorting. A careful and elaborate procedure was followed in evaluating the technology at Agnico Eagle’s operations which is discussed in this paper."

"Pre-treatment of mill feed in a minerals processing plant enables for higher production efficiency per ton of product, reduction of consumables and diverting mineral feed types. Sensor based particle sorting allows for pre-concentration of the run-of-mine (ROM) material prior to other concentrating process. Various sensors provide different responses from the minerals in measured particles. The capability of “accepting” or “rejecting” particles based on sensor responses is investigated in specific test work for each project. Modern sorting machines use pneumatic actuators to divert the reject particles from the material stream. This paper discusses the incorporation of ore sorting test work in processing and plant design. When taking the effects of a sorting circuit into account early in the process planning phase, the downstream process can be adequately sized and impacts evaluated. Potential benefits include but are not limited to increased head grade, lower tonnage to the mill, increased mining operations, removal of deleterious elements and changed properties in the process feed. In a case study we present the Keliber lithium project in central Finland. The plant will produce 9000 tons of lithium carbonate per year from a spodumene ore. Ore sorting and flotation tests were carried out in laboratory and pilot scale. Process models were designed and simulations performed using Outotec’s HSC Chemistry Simulation software. Changes in the flotation performance (grade, recovery, impurity levels) were simulated with and without the pre-concentration of the ROM material. The metallurgical performance and mine economics of the different operational scenarios were evaluated using the Ore-Met optimizer module of the simulation software.INTRODUCTION Challenges in the recent years such as declining ore grades, increasing energy prices, scarcity of water and increasing environmental regulations raise the demand for more efficient processing technologies. Sensor based sorting offers a method for pre-concentration or waste rejection at an early process stage. The technology analyzes each rock particle separately for their unique physical and chemical properties, and diverts the particles into separate material streams by high pressure air jets. Successful implementation relies on ore heterogeneity, differential sensor response and suitable feed preparation."

A group of mining men attending a recent workshop on "Analysis and Control in the Canadian Minerals Industry" issued, among others, the following statement: "Slurry flow measurement is considered to be one of the most inaccurate in the industry. A special program should be launched to encourage development." In response, this paper starts off the program with an investigation of the principles and the conventional practice of slurry flow measurement and identifies weaknesses which cause inaccuracies. Then it follows with descriptions of nonconventional systems in use at various locations and comments on their degree of success. The paper concludes that relatively simple methods, which it describes, can be applied to obtain an accurate slurry flow measurement.

Introduction Considerable attention has of late been attracted to the area surrounding Nimpkish lake, on northern Vancouver island, by the discovery of important rich copper deposits. In less than two years some 200 mineral claims have been staked in a small area, and at least two groups have very promising surface showings. During the summer of 1929, the writer spent one month investigating the general geology and mineral deposits of the region, and, although no detailed work has as yet been done in the field or in the laboratory, the importance of the mineral discoveries and the lack of geological information available to the public warrants a preliminary paper on the district. The district is, from a mining viewpoint, very accessible. Boats from Vancouver call at Englewood, in Beaver cove, four times a week. From Englewood, a first-class logging railway, operated by the Wood, .English Company, extends to the northeast corner of Nimpkish lake. The fifteen-mile trip from the north to the south end of the lake is made by boat, two tugs being maintained by the logging company. The whole trip from Englewood can easily be made in one day. The known mineral deposits lie immediately east of the southern part of the lake, four miles or less from the shore. A fair trail, four miles ? long, leads from the lake to the Nimpkish Copper group. Apart from this trail and an old logging railway grade which follows the east side of Klaanch river for several miles, no trails exist on the southeast side of the lake.
