The Advocate Mines Limited asbestos property is 6 km north of Baie Ve rte on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Mining began in the early 1960s and was concluded in 1981. The chrysotile asbestos deposit lies at the north end of the Baie Verte Lineament, the interface between a closing ocean floor and continental margin. Asbestos occurs within ultramafic rocks of abducted ophiolite massifs that were thrust westward against Fleur-de-Lys Supergroup metasediments (continental rise sediments) in the Lower to Middle Ordovician. The asbestos-bearing ultramafics belong to the Central Ultrabasic Sequence of the Advocate Complex. Serpentinized peridotite of this sequence has a 'waste cap' core that grades outward to increasingly sheared rock. Asbestos is found mainly in a northtrending, basin-shaped zone surrounding the core, specifically within fractured serpentinized peridotite that abuts the sheared rock. Asbestos appears as stockworks of chrysotile cross fibre veins and is concentrated between brown, narrow brucitic dunite dykes and sills. Shear contacts commonly surround the ultrabasic body. Cross faults and complex Jointing also exist. The Advocate Mines Limited mill produced 65,000 tonnes of Group IV fibres and 1 l , 000 tonnes of Group VJ fibres annually. The bagged product enjoyed markets worldwide.

"The study of a detailed series of structure and isopach maps of the Palaeozoic strata of southwestern Manitoba indicates that the principal Palaeozoic tectonic elements -the Williston Basin and Elk Point Basin -have been modified to a considerable extent by major tectonic features of the Precambrian basement. The principal basement feature is the break between the Churchill and Superior provinces, which coincides roughly with the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. East-west-trending orogenic belts within the Superior crustal block may also be reflected to some extent in later Palaeozoic movements. In addition, the Superior crustal block, as a whole, appears to have had a slightly different response to the tectonic forces, giving rise to both basin subsidence and basin uplift. During periods of deposition, especially during Ordovician time, the Manitoba portion of the basin appears to have undergone a relatively higher rate of subsidence, whereas during periods of erosion relatively greater amounts of uplift and truncation have occurred. As a result, the depositional and erosional patterns for most of the Palaeozoic formations in southwestern Manitoba are somewhat anomalous relative to the regional basin framework.Some prominent Palaeozoic structures probably are the result of salt solution and differential compaction caused directly or indirectly by relatively minor tectonic movements related to Precambrian basement features. In particular, the prominent hinge line at the edge of the Devonian Prairie Evaporite salt basin may be due, in large part, to salt solution. Numerous other small structural lows, structural highs and isopach thicks, probably resulting from salt solution, occur along the salt edge and have been important in modifying and controlling Mississippian oil accumulation in the Daly-Virden producing area."

Introduction Numerous papers have been written dealing with the construction and functions of, and the environmental conditions created by, Diesel locomotives. Therefore, it is not my intention to attempt to deal with these phases of Diesel transportation other than to make reference to them in ?relation to and in connection with actual operation. The rapid expansion of industry during recent years and the necessity of products being made available at competitive prices in home and world markets has made the demand for cheaper coal a very serious factor for the coal industry. This condition has meant each coal producing country looking into ways and means whereby greater productivity and reduction in cost could he achieved. Surveys made show that, in addition to face mechanization, savings, in some cases substantial, can be made in transportation. Ventilation The most efficient mines are in-variably the well ventilated ones, for it is true that, where there is good ventilation, there are usually good roads. These combined factors are very essential where Diesel locomotives are used. Good roadways and track allow speed, and good ventilation dilutes rapidly any disagreeable exhaust gases. Locomotive Development In the older types of auxiliary rope haulage, coal hauled per haul-age hand is usually very low.

The new 30 MVA slag cleaning furnace at Waterval Smelter, Rustenburg Platinum, South Africa, has been in operation since 10 March 2003. The furnace design and operation face a number of challenges including a wide variety of feed materials and resulting bath conditions. Furnace feed varies in combinations of granulated Waterval Ausmelt Converter Slag (WACS), hot fed Peirce-Smith converter slag, concentrate and reverts. Coke is added as reductant. The resulting slag composition varies considerably and regularly. For the case feeding WACS an almost pure fayalitic slag (60%+ FeO, 30%+ SiO2) with a very low viscosity results. Due to the widely varying slag conditions, including a superheated fayalitic slag with high fluidity, a robust sidewall design is required adjacent to the slag bath. For this reason the furnace sidewall is equipped with Pyromet's MAXICOOL® high intensity copper cooling system. The design and installation of the copper coolers as well as tap holes are discussed. To cope with the variation in bath conditions and high slag superheat (350°C when tapped at 1650°C), the copper coolers are capable of removing peak sidewall heat fluxes above 500 kW/m2. Feedback is included on the performance of the Pyromet MAXICOO® copper cooling system for the first two years of operation. The paper further includes an overview on the design and performance of the tap holes, furnace shell, furnace roof and copper slag spouts.

The copper-graphite metal matrix composites were fabricated by two different production methods: directly sintering with copper and graphite (Cu-Gr composite), and in-situ sintering with cuprous copper and graphite (Cu2O-Gr composite). During the in-situ reaction sintering, a redox reaction occurs at the interface of the Cu2O particles and Gr particles, resulting in the improved physical and mechanical properties of Cu2O-Gr composites. Compared with Cu-Gr composite, Cu2O-Gr composite has a higher compression strength at any given graphite content due to the improved interface bonding and uniformly distributed fine graphite particles in the matrix. Increasing graphite content decreases the mechanical properties of the copper-graphite composites. The compression strength of Cu2O-Gr composite is 50-100 MPa higher than that of Cu-Gr composite. INTRODUCTION Copper-graphite composites have been widely used in industry due to their low density, relatively high strength and hardness, good thermal and electrical conductivity, arc ablation resistance and self- lubrication ability (Grandin & Wiklund, 2018; Han & Xu, 1999; Huang et al., 2017). Electric sliding contact friction pair in the high-speed railway system and motor brush in electric contact components have a very high demand on electrical conductivity and self-lubrication ability of materials. The electric devices need to bear both mechanical load and high electric current. Copper-graphite composites with good mechanical, electric and self-lubrication properties are the best candidates for application in multifunctional electric sliding contact frication components. The relative sliding speed of friction pair is developing towards 100 m/s or even faster, which can withstand the electric flow of more than 800 A, and it is often accompanied with vibration and impact (Guo & Ding, 2008). Conventional wear-resistant materials can no longer meet the current requirements and this promotes the development of copper- graphite composites with excellent comprehensive properties (Ding, Chen, Zhu, Zhang, & Zhou, 2009; Yasar, Canakci, & Arslan, 2007). There are many ways to fabricate copper-graphite composites, mainly including powder metallurgy method, liquid immersion infiltration method, rapid sintering method and electrodeposition method (Kalin & Poljanec, 2018; Kim, Lee, & Han, 2014; Liu et al., 2018; Wang et al., 2018). Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the powder metallurgy method is the most commonly used one due to its simple process, high economic benefit, and industrial production applicability. The common steps of the powder metallurgy method are as follows (Samal, Parihar, & Chaira, 2013): firstly mixing the copper (copper alloy) powders and graphite with a certain ratio, following by die-forming, and then sintering at the high temperature with or without pressure. The advantage of copper-graphite composites is that the graphite distributed in the copper matrix uniformly and it can form a carbon diaphragm preventing the wear of the composite (Fu & He, 2010). However, the bonding strength of the interface between the copper matrix and the graphite is relative low as the combination between them is mechanical interlocking but not metallurgical bonding (Ma et al., 2008). It is meaningful to develop new fabrication technology of copper-graphite composites with better interface bonding, which could provide guidance for the design of copper-graphite composites with excellent comprehensive properties.

The response of reclaimed gold tailings to acid leaching was investigated in the laboratory, followed by a pilot-plant program in which the operations of CCD, CIX and SX were tested with plant feed material. These results formed the basis for the design of the extension to the existing uranium plant at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine, commissioned in July 1977. This circuit consists of slimes-dam reclamation by bucket-wheel excavator at a rate of 100,000 t solids per month, acid leaching in pachucas, a five-stage CCD washing section, two parallel C1X absorption columns and two elution columns, SX and an ADU precipitation section. Barren solution is recycled to the CCD section as wash and to the repulper at the slimes dam. The performance of the plant during the first year of operation is compared with the predictions on which the plant design was based. Rated capacity was achieved within three weeks of start-up at a nominal dissolved uranium recovery in the ion-exchange section of around 98%. Owing to recycle, the over-all recovery in the ion-exchange and solvent extraction sections is somewhat higher than this figure.

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. "Efficiency and penetration rate during percussive rock drilling significantly affect the speed of tunneling and excavation. Many researchers and engineers have continuously engaged in the advancement of rock drilling performance. Development and modification of the rock drills based on test data are timeconsuming and costly. Hence it is essential to make effective use of numerical simulation. However, most of the numerical models proposed in previous studies were too simple in comparison with the actual percussive rock drilling in which many factors are involved. The objective of our research project is to construct a new realistic numerical model of continuous percussive drilling, which is based on the previous Okubo-Nishimatsu’s model. In this study, the parts of the previous model involved in stress wave propagation and attenuation were modified. The two models were prepared for HD712 hydraulic rock drill mounted on crawler drills and HD210 hydraulic rock drill mounted on drilling jumbos. Stress wave propagation was computed with the discretized one-dimensional wave equation. The calculated results were compared to the stress waves measured on a rod during percussive drilling. In both models for HD712 and HD210, the measured stress waves can be reproduced with the one-dimensional model of the same acoustic impedance as the actual piston, shank rod and rod combined with the CI+spring model as a rod joint. The calculated results indicate that the spring constant in the model of a rod joint needs to be set appropriately depending on drilling conditions. Components related to the percussive drilling are a drill body, a piston, a shank rod, rods, rod joints, a bit and rock. The piston in the drill body is reciprocated by hydraulic pressure and collides with the shank rod a few thousand times per minute. Stress waves generated by the collision propagate and attenuate in the rods and rod joints, and then reach the bit. The bit penetrates and crushes rock. During percussive drilling, the components mutually affect each other and self-induced oscillation occurs. The number of blows and the rate of penetration are determined by the practical drilling conditions such as hydraulic pressure, thrust force, number of rods and mechanical properties of rock. Development and modification of the rock drills based on test data are time-consuming and costly. Hence it is essential to make effective use of numerical simulation. However, most of the numerical models proposed in previous studies were too simple in comparison with the actual percussive rock drilling in which many factors are involved."

"This paper aims to introduce and discuss a newly developed algorithm, which can be uploaded on smart watches and other mobile devices to inform and protect underground personnel working in hot and humid environments. Using this algorithm, the metabolic rate (M) of a worker can be determined in “real-time”. In addition, besides warning signs and alarm signals emitted by the smart watch, the algorithm has the ability to determine work-rest time periods based on the worker’s physiological parameters (e.g. age, height, weight, gender) and the climatic parameters (Td, Tw, flow velocity). This paper also investigates whether a re-designed auxiliary ventilation system can provide appropriate work conditions in the production stopes. INTRODUCTION An underground environment with high temperature and humidity conditions generated from various heat and moisture sources can significantly affect the thermoregulation processes of the human body. This can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a serious illness that carries a high risk of fatality, if the underground workers are not immediately treated and the climatic conditions are not corrected (McPherson, 1993). There are two methods used to control the climatic conditions in underground mines: (1) Using ventilation and cooling systems to reduce the thermal stress on the mine workers, and (2) Reducing the heat transferred to the ventilating air from major sources such as: strata, auto-compression, mining equipment, groundwater, blasting, etc. The heat from strata and auto-compression is transferred to the ventilating air at varying degrees, based on factors such as the virgin rock temperature (VRT), the thermal properties of the surrounding rock formations, and the surface air temperature. However, the use of mining equipment and blasting processes can be managed to reduce their contribution to the mines’ overall heat load. To provide appropriate work conditions, selecting the most suitable cooling method depends on the level of heat to be removed, the location of the problem areas, and economic constraints (Brake & Bates, 2002; McPherson, 1993). Because every mine is unique, it is essential to monitor the climatic conditions to select the most appropriate method of cooling. A majority of the time, simply adjusting or re-designing the auxiliary ventilation system can efficiently remove the heat and dilute the contaminants. This may involve moving the ducting system, changing the size of the duct, changing the size of the auxiliary fan, or switching from forcing to an exhausting fan arrangement. If the required air volumes are higher than the existing primary ventilation system can supply, other measures may need to be taken to increase the airflow delivery. This may include regulating the flow in some areas of the mine to increase airflow to the desired area, adding booster fans, or replacing the primary fans."

"SummaryThe results of this investigation indicate that the gold in the cyanide tailing of refractory gold cyanides is occluded in fused •particles formed during roasting. This conclusion was reached following microscopic examination of calcines produced at various furnace temperatures with different atmospheres, and a •comparison with calcines produced by decomposing samples of completely sulphated concentrate under conditions such that the maximum particle temperature varied between 6•50°C. and 1,100°C. This comparison showed that the particle temperature during a normal roast may be several hundred degrees higher than the furnace atmosphere, or that the fusion is associated with a low melting (950°C.) eutectic mixture of FeO and FeS.Because of the unavoidable particle fusion during a furnace roast, and because low particle temperatures are essential for gold extraction by cyanidation, aqueous medium oxidation under high oxygen pressures was studied. Gold recovery from calcines produced by this means was over 98 •per cent •compared with a maximum of 80 per cent from furnace calcines.IntroductionMANY arsenical gold ores are called 'refractory' because much ' of the gold cannot be satisfactorily extracted by cyaniding the raw ore or concentrate. The sub-level blasthole benching method of mining has been proved to be economical at Willroy Mines. How-ever due to the nature and attitude of the wall rock, this method is susceptible to serious hanging-wall dilution of the ore. Attempts to solve the dilution problem by various means were not satisfactory until long Stressteel bars were employed as rock bolts. The adoption of this de-vice does not require any special skill, and has become routine in the under-ground operation. Since the inception of this method, the dilution of the ore has been greatly reduced and the ov1!r-all costs of controlling this dilution are much lower. INTRODUCTION T HIS is a report describing the successful use of long Stressteel bars as rock bolts in preventing l1anging-wall failure and consequent dilution in open stopes. Willroy Mines Limited is located (Figure 1) near the town of Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately l1alf-way between Sault Ste. Marie and Port Arthur.

"Metals vah1ed at more than $200,000,000 have been obtained, mainly since 1930, from the mines of northern Manitoba. The greater part of this production has been copper, zinc, and gold from the Flin Flon, Sherritt Gordon, and Mandy mines. The chief mines from which gold alone has been produced are God's Lake, Laguna, and Gurney. At present (May 1947) Flin Flon and Sherritt Gordon are the only producing mines, but the Nor-Acme property is being developed for large-scale production of gold. Large deposits of nickel and copper are being diamond drilled at Lynn Lake, and the Thompson, Ferro, and other properties are being developed. The mineral deposits lie within irregular or elongated areas of Precambrian sedimentary and volcanic rocks, surrounded by granite ( Fig. 1).The common rock types include basic and acidic flows, agglomerate, ruff, greywacke, arkose, argilli te, conglomerate, and their gneissoid and schistose derivatives. They are invaded by sills, dykes, and irregular bodies of gabbro and diorite, and all are cut by granite. Some of the sediments are interstratified with volcanics, and others are deposited unconformably on them.STRUCTURAL GEOLOGYLittle is known of the structures of the rocks in the area as a whole, because by far the greater part is unexplored or has been covered only by reconnaissance surveys. Available information indicates a general east structural trend in the southeast part, whereas in the west part the folding is mote complex with no definite overall trend. However, in a few small areas in the western part where detailed work has been done, as around the Flin Flon, Sherritt-Gordon, Nor-Acme, and other properties, the structure is fairly well known. The following descriptions apply chiefly to these areas ."

We must pursue conservation and energy management vigorously if we are to remain competitive in domestic and world markets, and minimize our reliance on external energy sources. Energy management in industry is discussed from three viewpoints: (l) as a means of directly improving profitability; (2) as a major factor in the supply picture; and (3) as a significant influence on Canada's balance of payments and over-all economic well-being. The Federal role in promoting a voluntary industrial energy conservation program is described.

"Special salt protection rings containing a water-swell• able, polymeric sealant are in successful operation in Canadian potash shafts. Installed above the Prairie Evaporite salt formation at a depth of 3,000 feet, the sealant is preventing formation water migration into the salt and pressure build-up on the concrete lining of both production and service shafts. The salt protection rings are not under the hydrostatic pressure of the formation water.The chemical sealant in use has the unique property of imbibing water and swelling. •Therefore, any water at• tempting to flow by the seal ring actually produces a tighter seal.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the sealant and its properties and uses. Installation of the material and its operation in two Canadian mine shafts is described."

The numerous factors associated with the prov1s1on of satisfactory air conditions in hot and humid Canadian mines are described. The main heat sources are auto-compression and the actual flow of heat from the rock. Temperatures reach 97°F at a depth of 8,100 feet. Various methods used in coping with high temperatures are described, including the use of ice stopes and heat exchangers. Moisture control, desirable air volumes and velocities, sizes of airways and methods of distribution are important considerations. A comparison of the temperatures, humidities and types of airways of two deep mines should prove useful in the design of future ventilation systems. Introduction OUTDOOR temperatures in northern Ontario vary from a low of around -40°F in winter to a high of about +90°F in summer. The average annual mean temperature over a 12-year period was +35°F, with a summer mean of 54 o and a winter mean of 16°. Because of low outdoor temperatures, a number of northern mines must heat fresh air for underground ventilation in winter; others, with high rock temperatures, are faced with a year-round cooling problem.

The effect of various N-substituents on the performance of amide-containing tertiary amine compounds in the extraction of Rh(III) from HCl solutions was investigated to optimize the structure of these compounds for industrial use. It was found that N-2-ethylhexyl-bis(N-di-2-ethylhexyl-ethylamide)amine and tris(N-di-2-ethylhexyl-ethylamide)amine, which have long, branched alkyl chains, were suitable for Rh extraction, because they were soluble in a practical diluent (80 vol% n-dodecane?20 vol% 2-ethylhexanol) and stable against highly concentrated HCl/Rh solutions, and showed high selectivity for Rh(III) over Pd(II) and Pt(IV).

This paper describes the concentration processes of the Sullivan. Concentrator, including crushing , transportation, sink-float, grinding , flotation and dewatering. Handling of hot muck has had a deleterious effect on most of the processes, resulting in significant operating problems and poorer metallurgy. These problems are described -in detail. THE SULLIVAN CONCENTRATOR is situated in Kimberley, high up in the Purcell Range of the Selkirk Mountains, at an elevation of 3,600 feet, approximately 4 miles from the Sullivan Mine (see Fig. 1). The original plant went on stream on August 23, 1923 at a designed capacity of 2,500 tons per day. This has been increased in stages to its present rated capacity of 11,000 tons per day. The latest stage was in 1949, when several major projects, including the underground crushing plant, the sink-float plant and the installation of a rod mill, were completed. Some 112,800,000 tons of ore have been treated in this concentrator to November 1975. The plant started on a 48-hour/ week schedule, but was reduced to 44 hours/week in October 1946 and down to 40 hours/week by the end of 1949. Except for a 6-month period in 1952 when the mill operated continuously, the 40-hour/week, Monday to Friday schedule was in effect.
