"Abstract- In the southern Gaspé Appalachians, gold mineralization is spatially associated with the Acadian dextral strike-slip Grand Pabos-Restigouche fault system. Two different structurally-controlled gold prospects, the Lac Arsenault and the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, are described to unravel the genesis of gold mineralization in this part of the Canadian Appalachians.At the Lac Arsenault gold prospect, gold mineralization consists of Au-As-Pb-Zn-Cu-(Ag) polymetallic fault-filled quartz veins with laminated textures emplaced in brittle-ductile sinistral X shear fractures. Mineralized veins are hosted by Middle Ordovician graywacke of the Arsenault Formation, belonging to the Dunnage Zone, the Early Paleozoic oceanic domain of the Appalachians. Terrigeneous rocks of the Arsenault are regionally metamorphosed at the lower greenshist facies and the mineralized veins are included in a zone of Fe-carbonate alteration.The Sb-Au-As mineralization of the Saint-André-de-Ristigouche gold prospect, in the southwestern Gaspé area, comprises extension veins in the extension direction emplaced in brittle conditions. Mineralized veins are hosted by calcilutite and laminated silty and argillaceous limestone of the Early Silurian part of the White Head Formation, which belongs to the Gaspé Belt, the Middle Paleozoic successor basin in the Gaspé Appalachians. Metamorphic grade of the White Head Formation in the southwestern Gaspé area is very low, but the gold mineralization is included in a zone of hydrothermal propylitic alteration which includes two Cu-skarn mineral occurrences. The Lac Arsenault gold prospect has many characteristics of "greenstone-hosted quartz-carbonate vein" deposits whereas the southwestern Gaspé area, which includes the Saint-André-de- Ristigouche gold prospect, shows affinities with the geological setting of sediment-hosted gold deposits (Carlin-like deposits). The two gold prospects are controlled by the Grand Pabos- Restigouche fault system but they were not emplaced at the same level in the crust. Acadian strikeslip fauting played a major role in their respective genesis in providing channelways for ore-bearing fluids. The recognition of the analogy of the geological setting of the southwestern Gaspé area with that of Carlin-like mineralization gives new ideas for exploration in the area and elsewhere in the Appalachians.Résumé - Dans le sud des Appalaches de la Gaspésie, on trouve des minéralisations aurifères spatialement associées au système de failles de coulissage dextre acadien de Grand Pabos-Restigouche. Deux indices très différents, Lac Arsenault et Saint-André-de-Ristigouche, sont décrits pour évaluer la genèse des minéralisations aurifères à contrôle structural de cette partie des Appalaches canadiennes. Au Lac Arsenault, la minéralisation aurifère comprend des veines polymétalliques à Au-As-Pb- Zn-Cu-(Ag) en remplissage de failles. Ces veines à texture laminaire se retrouvent dans des zones de cisaillement fragiles-ductiles senestres de type X. Les veines minéralisées sont encaissées dans les grauwackes d’âge Ordovicien moyen de la Formation d’Arsenault appartenant à la zone de Dunnage, le domaine océanique du Paléozoïque précoce des Appalaches canadiennes. Les roches terrigènes de l’Arsenault sont métamorphisées régionalement au faciès inférieur des schistes verts et les veines aurifères sont dans de larges zones d’altération dolomitique (Fe-carbonate).Dans le sud-ouest de la Gaspésie, la minéralisation à Sb-Au-As de Saint-André-de-Ristigouche est dans des veines d’extension comprises dans la direction d’extension et mises en place dans des conditions de déformation fragile. "Cyanide is a well proven, effective lixiviant that has been utilised for centuries in gold extraction processes. Despite being used in close to 90% of gold processing plants, cyanide leaching is still being scrutinised due to its toxic nature. With governments tightening the regulations on cyanide management, and recently erected sites situated closer to community and environment, leach waste and tailings treatment has become increasingly important. Gekko Systems has worked with engineering companies and directly with gold producers to provide technical services and supply complete modular cyanide destruction (detox) systems for plants leaching both run-of-mine ore and high sulphide gravity and flotation concentrates. Although similar in principle, the different materials presented unique challenges in design and implementation. Similar to designing any section of a processing plant, the development of the cyanide destruction plant design began with laboratory test work to simulate the full scale operation. This paper focusses on the laboratory test work and how other critical factors such as geographical location, logistics, and local community play a role in the process design and construction. Two design and supply cases are discussed in this paper; one treating intensive cyanidation concentrate leach tails and one treating whole ore CIL tails. Although these plants both use the SO2/O2 process, each presented different challenges in laboratory testing and plant design, resulting in variations in final implementation including reagent choice, oxygen supply, and process control.INTRODUCTIONSince 1887, cyanide has played a large part in the beneficiation of gold from gold bearing ores. Cyanide is used to solubilise gold into solution, and is typically added in excess to maintain the leaching process. Some or all the excess cyanide can often be recovered and reused in the process however chemical destruction of cyanide is often necessary to manage cyanide levels in the tailings storage facility (TSF)."

Higher employer costs and increased employee benefits will result from the current sweeping revisions of the un-employment insurance system now receiving consideration before Parliament. The new legislation, the Un-employment Insurance Act, 1971, will substantially increase the unemployment insurance costs of many employers through an increase in the level of employer contributions -generally, employer contributions will go to 1.4 times employee costs -as well as by extending coverage to many classes of employees now exempt. Under the new legislation, executives, technicians, teachers, institutional workers and others will be covered, and eligible for the higher benefits which it provides. For the first time, absence from work because of illness or accident may qualify individuals for unemployment insurance benefits.

Due to the growing share of electrical cars, the use of lithium ion batteries significantly increased. Recycling of these batteries is essential to safely dispose hazardous materials as well as to recover valuables (Cu, Ni, Co, etc.). In order to optimise the recycling process, accurate information is required on the slag phase equilibria for battery smelting. The slag is a multi-component system containing alumina from the battery cases, silica and lime from fluxes, and manganese and lithium from the electrode materials. The present study accurately determined the phase equilibria in the "MnO"-Al2O3-SiO2 sub-ternary system at metal alloy saturation. Particular attention was given to the accuracy and reliability of the final results by highlighting the different reaction pathways, mass transfer- and reaction mechanisms taking place in the system during experiments. This attention enabled improved experimental methodology and measurements. Based on the present study, further measurements will be undertaken in the quaternary "MnO"-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 system at low "MnO" concentrations, which closely represents the future recycling industrial slags.

"Within the last decades, mainly the base metals, like zinc, copper and lead were recycled from different industrial residues without taking into account that accompanied minor side-elements are often also present. A high supply risk for critical raw materials derives mainly due to the high share of the worldwide production in a limited number of countries. Examples include indium and germanium in China, PGM in South Africa and Russia or cobalt and tungsten in the Democratic Republic of Congo. By taking the market of critical metals into account, the recycling of potential residues does not only contribute to an economic treatment but also to the European strategy to decrease the supply risk of certain metals. Depending on the metal discussed, political unrest, decreasing primary resources leading to supply risks in different countries or also simply economic interests moved these mentioned side elements and with this the residues where they are present in, into the focus of the recycling industry.Because of this, the typical routes of lead, zinc and copper production are evaluated concerning generated residues and their typical contents of contained minor elements. Finally, the paper tries to answer the questions how a possible treatment of these wastes could contribute to the overall supply of for example silver but also other minor elements."

The change from a seasonal to a continuous mining operation at Cassiar has been accompanied by increased emphasis on the preventive maintenance of mining equipment. This paper describes how equipment maintenance is organized, and details some maintenance practices that have proved advantageous to the Cassier operation. Introduction Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited is currenly carrying out an open-pit mining operation at the 6,300-foot elevation on McDame mountain in northern B. C. A 6-mile road connects the mine to the mill and plantsite at the 3,500-foot elevation. Ore concentrate is delivered to the mill via a 3llz-mile tramline. Naturally level ground does not exist in the mine area. The weather is typical of mountainous regions, exhibiting wide and rapid variations in temperature. It is generally wet and windy at the mine elevation, and a heavy snowfall is common. The rock types vary from a soft, sheared serpentine to massive serpentine, to medium-hard, friable sediments to hard, blocky volcanic flows.

The in situ performance of Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) systems can be monitored to improve understanding of the paste?s behaviour and therefore optimize the geomechanical design of the cemented paste backfill system (i.e., minimize binder content, minimize fill barricade complexity, maximize fill rate-of-rise during backfilling, and minimize cure time before resuming production blasting in proximity). However, undertaking such a monitoring program is inherently complex, because the rate-of-rise and accompanying self-weight induced stresses occur at a time rate that is similar to the rate of hydration and associated increase in the paste?s stiffness and strength. In addition, arching within the stope complicates the overall stress distribution. Therefore, to obtain a complete picture of the CPB?s response, it is necessary to measure several variables (3-D total pressures, water pressures and suctions, hydration rates, and blasting induced vibrations) at a given ?point?, and take all such measurements at many points throughout the fill mass as well as at barricade locations. The overall testing program can therefore be logistically difficult to implement and have an apparent high cost. However, if the program is successful, the benefits arising from improved mine design can significantly outweigh the seemingly high initial capital and labour costs of the monitoring program. A case study involving an instrumented paste fill in a tall and narrow Alimak stope is briefly outlined. Plans for a similar experiment in a large long-hole stope are then considered.

THE DEFINITION of the continental margin, as considered in this paper, is in the broad sense: " ... those provinces of the continents and of the oceans which are associated with the boundary between these two first-order features of the earth" (Heezen et aL, 1959, p. 17). The provinces in the area under con-sideration are: the Continental Shelf, the Continental Slope and the Continental Rise. The Continental Shelf extends from the shoreline to the shelf break, which lies at approximately the 200-meter isobath through-out the region (except north of the Grand Banks, where the break may be defined more properly by the 400-meter isobath). The Continental Slope and Rise occur between the shelf break and the 4,000-meter isobath. (The last figure was somewhat arbitrarily selected for the purpose of this paper.) The Atlantic Continental Margin as thus defined extends along the eastern coast of Canada from the International Boundary in the Gulf of Maine northward to approximately the 60°N latitude off the coast of Labrador. The area of study amounts to at }east 500,000 square miles -an area roughly equivalent to 13 per cent of Canada's total land surface.

DURING the field season of 1938, the Ontario Department of Mines assigned a combined geological and geophysical survey patty to the investigation of the location, genesis, structural relationships, and economic possibilities of the hematite deposits at Steeprock lake. The investigation was carried out by detailed mapping of the rock exposures and a magneto-metric survey of the drift-covered portions of the area. This was supplemented during the winter of 1938-39 by further geophysical work conducted on the ice. Dr. A. A. Brant, of the Department of Physics, University of Toronto, was in charge of the geophysical work for the Department of Mines in the summer and for the Sterola Exploration Company in the winter. The writer supervised the geological examination. Scope of the Paper The present paper is an attempt to acquaint the members of the Institute with the structure and mode of occurrence of the deposits, since many people are of the erroneous opinion that they are analogous to the Mesaba and Michigan deposits. It is hoped that, from this discussion, they may be able to draw some conclusions of their own regarding the nature of the deposits, and the importance and future possibilities of the region.

The mines in western Canada producing steam coal will find a better opportunity this year to market their product in Winnipeg - for two reasons: First, the new wage schedules, signed with local unions at each mine, have enabled them to reduce the selling price materially. Second, the duty on slack coal coming in from the United States has been raised to 50 cents, which is equal to the duty on run-of-mine coal. This has had the effect of raising the cost of mine-run to .the importer. Formerly, it was the practice to bring in slack coal under a duty of 14 cents and lump coal under a 53-cent duty and, by judicious mixing of the two, manufacture a mine-run coal at an average duty cost of about 22 cents. Fortunately, through efforts of the Alberta Government, and other friends of the Canadian coal trade, the Federal Government was persuaded to adjust the duty on slack coal as indicated. While it will be found that the Manitoba market, this season, is slightly more easy of access we have still a long way to go before we reach the desired goal. Geographically and economically the Manitoba market should belong to western Canada. However, it has been found a very profitable market for United States mines because large tonnages of coal can be shipped, practically at the convenience of the mines, via the Great Lakes, during seasons of slack business. They will therefore not relinquish this market without a struggle.

The mine and concentrator of Cyprus Anvil Mining Corporation are situated in south-central Yukon, some 120 miles north of Whitehorse. The large lead-zinc concentrator employs conventional crushing and grinding , followed by differential flotation, to produce selective lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a mixed lead-zinc (bulk) concentrate. Since the commencement of operations in 1969, the concentrator has undergone expansions and modifications which have increased the capacity to 10,000 tons per day, and afforded some metallurgical improvements.

The design of hydrostatic liner for a deep potash mine shaft in Saskatchewan poses tremendous technological challenges. Technology has evolved to a point where one could consider a new innovative approach to hydrostatic liner design. But there is still a place for conventional technologies such as cast iron tubbings. As will be discussed in this paper, improvement to manufacturing process, installation procedures and even new materials can bring this technology to an excellent level of performance. With the spur of new projects in the potash industry of Saskatchewan, the authors worked in various shaft liner designs from the conceptual stage through to the construction phase. They were either directly leading the design work on some of these projects or acting as an external reviewer on others. Most of these shaft liner designs involved cast iron tubbing technology and ground freezing. The major challenge in sinking potash shafts in Saskatchewan is to go through a water-bearing ground formation under high pressure, known as the Blairmore or Manville fm. The only proven stabilizing technology for these formations is ground freezing. For a potash shaft, dry shaft conditions are highly desired, so a fully waterproof hydrostatic liner is required. All the existing potash mine shafts in Saskatchewan, except for two with composite steelconcrete lining, used the cast iron tubbing technology. Two new shaft tubbing liners have been constructed recently, one in the Athabasca Basin and one for a potash mine in Saskatchewan. When the authors began working on these new projects, what became quickly evident is that the technological knowhow for designing and constructing tubbing liners was no longer available within Canada and that the past construction methods used to sink tubbing lined shafts was obsolete. The tubbing liner for the shafts sunk in the sixties were designed either by German or British companies. In both of these countries only few tubbing lined shafts were sunk in last 40 years and the technology used in the sixties was not improved. There are only few countries where tubbing is routinely produced and installed: China, Russia, Ukraine and Poland. Out of these countries Poland is the one where this technology is the most advanced. The authors, working in close collaboration with engineers from Poland, attempted to rebuild this knowledge for the mining industry in Canada. This process involved thorough analysis of old technical reports, literature review and study of current polish design and construction practices as well as site visits of existing shafts. Through actual construction experience, some lessons were learned as well as ideas for improvements. In this paper, the authors will present a succinct review of design and procurement process. But, the practical aspects of the construction and installation methodology will be treated with more emphasis, more specifically the practice leading to good liner performance. Some of the poorly understood technical aspects of tubbing installation will be discussed more thoroughly and some currently accepted myths dispelled.

"The Island Mountain mine is at the southeast end of Island mountain; across Jack of Clubs lake from the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine.; The orebodies consist of quartz veins and pyritic replacement deposits in limestone. To December 31; 1944; there has been mined 296; 273 tons of quartz-vein ore averaging about 0.34 oz. gold a ton; and 101; 002 tons of sulphide ore averaging about 0.83 oz. gold a ton; a total of 397; 275 tons averaging 0.46 oz. From this; 175; 985 fine oz. of gold and about 26; 450 fine oz. of silver were recovered; having a value of $6; 510; 521.More than 95 per cent of the production has come from a band 500 feet wide along the contact of the Rainbow and overlying Baker members and extending about 100 feet into the latter. Evidence that the Rainbow belongs stratigraphically above the Baker is presented later in this paper. Both members are most variable lithologically, and individual beds and whole series of beds pinch out in short distances. In part, at least, this is due to squeezing out incidentally to intense folding. No section can be claimed with assurance to be really representative. However, both memb.ers are composed predominantly of quartzitic rocks. Both contain argillaceous quartzite, argillite, limy quartzite, limy argillite, limestone (marble), and minor amounts of highly ankeritized rocks believed to be igneous sills possibly originally approaching diorite in composition."

ABSTRACT The scheduling of underground mining activities is a complex task that must simultaneously satisfy a large number of constraints. A schedule optimization tool (SOT) for underground mine planning is described, and its use for investigating strategic decisions is illustrated through a case study. The maincomponents of the SOT include (a) a genetic algorithm that searches for optimal schedules, (b) guidance for the application of heuristic rules, and (c) sliding, which implements just-in-time development. Findings indicated that preliminary scheduling performed before invoking the SOT, intended to provide a good starting point for the search, did not ultimately lead to higher value schedules.

Due to urban subway tunnels mostly built in the cities with highly density buildings, the geological and construction conditions is complex, especially certain sections of the subway tunnel will pass through from the foundation of the overpass, therefore the stability and surface deformation control of that section’s tunnel excavation is particularly important. Taking Xi'an Metro Line Three interval tunnel as a research object, we have used FLAC3D simulation to analyze the tunnel’s surrounding soil deformation and tunnel lining stress distribution under bridge foundation with shallow buried covered excavation method. Analysis results show: (1) After the excavation of the tunnel right line, due to the bias of the upper bridge foundation the right of the tunnel showed relatively large deformation. In order to ensure the construction safety, we recommended using the grouting anchor reinforcement on the right side wall to further control the deformation zone. (2) The maximum vertical displacement of the ground occurred in the right wall of the tunnel portion which was due to the intensity of soil outside the grouting range of the arch is low, as a result the deformation is larger; this position requires special attention, strengthening the monitoring measurements of this part is necessary to avoid the large deformation and other adverse effects of the upper portion of bridge foundation. (3) The maximum vertical force area of the initial lining of the tunnel is in the middle of the side wall, while the second lining in this part of forces is smaller, thus at the beginning of the construction of the liner, attention should be paid to this area. On-site grouting or steel bracing reinforce support may be used if necessary.

Mkango Resources Limited is developing the Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element Project in southeast Malawi. Since being awarded the exclusive exploration licence for the project in January 2010, Mkango has completed an extensive work programme including detailed mineralogical studies, geological mapping, geochemical sampling and trenching, environmental and social studies, two phases of diamond drilling, and extensive metallurgical test work. In October 2012, the company announced a NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate comprising an Indicated resource of 13.2 million tonnes grading 1.62% total rare earth oxides (TREO) and an Inferred resource of 18.6 million tonnes grading 1.38% TREO. The Indicated mineral resource estimate formed the basis for commencement of the Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS). The mineralogical program identified the fluorocarbonate mineral, synchysite, and the phosphate mineral, apatite, as the primary rare earth element (REE) bearing minerals. Extensive flotation testwork conducted at Mintek in South Africa has resulted in an effective regime to increase the REO grade 2.6 times. Initial leaching testwork by Mintek identified that a selective hydrochloric acid (HCl) leach can target the gangue minerals with minimal REE dissolution. Recent testwork undertaken at Nagrom in Western Australia has expanded on this work to develop a two stage HCl leach process incorporating HCl recycling. A downstream processing route of purification and cerium rejection to produce a cerium depleted high grade REE concentrate suitable as feed to a separation facility is proposed.

"J. S. Redpath Limited, an underground contractor with a worldwide presence, has implemented innovative techniques in various projects in Canada to shorten the development cycle. Conventional methods currently used for installing primary ground support are compared with the Australian technique of bolting and meshing with jumbos equipped with twin telescopic booms, in-cycle shotcreting, and the use of two jumbos and two scissor bolters set up side by side in wide headings. Recommendations and lessons learned are presented with the aim of providing realistic expectations with regard to development advance rates in a mining environment.RÉSUMÉ J. S. Redpath Limitée, un entrepreneur minier souterrain d’envergure mondiale, a complété plusieurs projets au Canada où des techniques novatrices ont été mises en oeuvre pour raccourcir le cycle de développement. Cet article présente une comparaison entre les méthodes conventionnelles fréquemment utilisées pour le support de terrain, la technique australienne de boulonnage et d’installation de grillage au moyen de jumbos équipés de flèches télescopiques doubles, du béton projeté appliqué durant le cycle de développement et de l’utilisation de deux jumbos et deux boulonneuses côtes-à-côtes dans des galeries de grandes dimensions. Introduction To enlighten those who may be wondering where anyone could find sufficient data to write a paper on underground concrete work, the author would like to explain that, at Copper Mountain, we have found it necessary to line numerous headings with a layer of concrete in order to keep them in a safe and serviceable condition. The majority of these headings are scram drifts and ore-pass raises. This paper will therefore deal, in the main, with the methods of and reasons for placing concrete in these headings. During recent years, radical changes have been made in the methods of mining ore at the Copper Mountain mine. After considerable experimenting, a mining system has been developed making use of diamond drills for primary breaking and transfering such broken ore through scram drifts with slusher hoists. With the advent of scram drifts, it soon became apparent that some substantial means of reinforcement and protection for the scram drifts themselves would be necessary. Since the orebodies in this mine are cut by numerous dykes or faults, and often both, it was anticipated that some means of support would be required where headings necessarily passed through these incompetent zones. Further, as experience was gained, scram drifts were driven into pillars and in close proximity to old workings so as to recover the maximum amount of ore. In such places, the ground is often severely fractured, either as a result of previous mining or from the effect of excessive rock pressures.
