"A major use for many of the rare earths is in permanent magnets. While alternate technologies are in research or already exist, rare earth magnets are unlikely to be supplanted as a major input to clean technologies and high efficiency consumer and industrial devices. We’ll examine where and how the magnet rare earths are utilized and the size of the market. Market growth forecasts based on global markets will be presented. A brief explanation of materials research in the US completes the material.INTRODUCTIONRare earth magnets, first commercialized c.1969, have become essential for a wide range of consumer, industrial and military devices. They are used in the speakers and vibrator motors of cell phones. Rare earth magnets spin the hard discs within the drives and rare earth magnet voice coil motors position the read/write head over the spinning platter. Rare earth magnets are the heart of motors and generators used on airplanes – they are smaller and lighter weight than alternative materials/devices. Now rare earth permanent magnets are being introduced into electric vehicles and wind power generation.Rare earth minerals are difficult to extract from the ores and to separate from one another. The increase in use of rare earth magnets has placed a severe strain on established sources of supply. The establishment of new mines and processing facilities is costly and requires upwards of 15 years to become productive. The combination of rapid rise in use of rare earth minerals coupled with supply shortages has caused rapid price increases and threat of non-delivery of product. The result of this disruptive situation has been a profound response at several levels: corporate, industry-wide and governmental. Let’s learn more about why rare earth magnets are so important to modern society."

At the end of a century of mining education in South Africa, it is appropriate to reflect on the past, take stock of the present and ponder the future of mining education. While it is likely that changes in the mining industry will generate an increased demand for mining graduates, the number of suitably qualified applicants to study mining is worryingly small. While good progress has been made in unifying the educational system that previously provided schooling on a racially separate basis, it appears that a decade or more will be required to raise competency levels in mathematics, science and English, and this paper describes the process as it affects mining engineering programs. It also describes the initiatives currently being undertaken by the University of the Witwatersrand and the mining industry to ensure that the South African industry receives an adequate flow of well-qualified mining graduates, despite more than 70% of the intake coming from severely disadvantaged educational backgrounds.

"A set of Al-Co binary alloys (with respectively in weight percent 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% Co) have been studied by X-ray diffraction at the as compacted state. The structural evolution according to cobalt addition shows special features as the apparition of fcc cobalt and hcp cobalt beside aluminium in some cobalt compositions of the Al-Co mixtures using only cold compaction without sintering at high temperature. Figure 1 Cobalt is not a common alloying element in aluminium because its solubility is very low [1]. According to the pressure-temperature phase diagram, Co is known to exist in two allotropic forms: a low-temperature hcp phase and a high-temperature fcc phase [2-3]. At room temperature, Co is stable in the hcp form but it transforms to the fcc form when it is heated to above the transition temperature 695K. Powder aluminium and cobalt (99.999 %) were used in the proportions defined according to the required compositions. The total mass of the samples to be elaborated was between 8 g and 10 g. Cold compaction of mixed powder (Al-Co) under an uniaxial load of 10 MPa has been achieved to obtain a dense product (60%)."

"Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo. Lorsque l’on applique la technologie utilisant du métabisulfite (MBS) de sodium comme agent déprimant de la pyrite, le procédé se fait à un pH de 6,5 à 7,5, gamme dans laquelle la récupération de Mo est supérieure au procédé habituel utilisant un pH de 11,0 à 12,0 lorsque l’on applique de la chaux. Les conditions de réduction-oxydation (redox) et les réactions chimiques impliquées dans les mécanismes de dépression de la pyrite par le MBS (ou sulfite de sodium) dans de l’eau de mer sont étudiées et débattues sur la base de l’effet acidifiant du MBS, de l’oxydation des ions sulfites par de l’oxygène dissous et du rôle de catalyseur de certains cations métalliques (par exemple les ions de cuivre) adsorbés à la surface de la pyrite. Introduction Asbestos, a mineral known and used in ancient times, has become an article of commerce only during the life of the older asbestos miners in Quebec. The diversified uses of this adaptable substance are now numbered by the hundreds. Wherever insulation or resistance to heat may be required, asbestos, either by itself or mixed with some other material, may be employed to advantage. Regarded as a curiosity for centuries, it is now in such common use that it is familiar to all. The demand for long fibre for use in the manufacture of textiles and brake-lining, and for shorter fibre for making shingles, paper, and insulation materials, serves to support the industry of mining asbestos-bearing rock and milling the fibre from it in Canada, South Africa, Russia, Cyprus, and the United States. The commercial use of asbestos dates only from 1876, in which year large deposits were discovered in the Province of Quebec, Canada. Prior to that year a small amount of long fibre amphibole asbestos was produced in Italy. Occurrence In Canada In the Eastern Townships of Quebec, along the line of the Quebec Central railway, is an area of serpentine rock. It extends westerly into Vermont and easterly to Gaspe. A part of it, the section from Danville to East Broughton, contains areas in which occur deposits of commercial asbestos fibre of the chrysotile variety. Pits have been opened on some of these deposits at Danville, Coleraine, Black Lake, Thetford Mines, Robertson, and East Broughton. Thetford is distant 68 miles from Quebec city, East Broughton lies 25 miles to the northeast of Thetford, while Danville is 45 miles to the southwest of Thetford.

Introduction It is the purpose of this paper to review the subject of roasting as preparation of refractory gold ores and concentrates for cyanidation, with particular reference to operations at the mill of Beattie Gold Mines (Que.), Ltd., Duparquet, Quebec. Two earlier papers relating to the Beattie roasting operations are cited as background to the ? present discussion, and more general reference is made to other publications relating? to geology and metallurgy at Beattie. The Beattie roasting plant was built in 1937 as an addition to the existing flotation and cyanidation plant to permit complete processing of the ore at the mine property. Previously, the flotation concentrate had been cyanided, yielding 70 per cent of the gold values, followed by re-flotation of a concentrate from the cyanide residue. This re-floated residue was shipped to a smelter for recovery of gold values unavailable from direct cyanidation. The roasting plant itself is of interest through application in its design of multiple-hearth roasters and a Cottrell plant for separate recovery of dust and arsenic. In the laboratory and plant studies that accompanied development of the plant into a dependable and efficient working unit have been found principles and ideas applicable to other roasting 'problems. Before enlarging on these aspects relating particularly to the Beattie problems and plant, brief consideration is given to roasting in general.

Tower crane layout (TCL) is a typical construction site layout (CSL) problem, which is suitable for a wide range of work assignments and site conditions. Tower crane is one of the key facilities for vertical and horizontal transportation of materials, especially for heavy prefabrication units such as steel beams, ready mixed concrete, prefabricated elements and large panel formwork such as machinery and equipment, and a wide variety of other building materials within a construction site. However, it is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem to determine the locations of tower cranes with materials quantity supply and demand for engineers. Swarm intelligence (SI) was very popular and widely used in many complex optimization problems which was collective behaviour of social systems such as honey bees (bee algorithm, BA) and birds (particle swarm optimization, PSO). This study applied a hybrid swarm algorithm namely particle bee algorithm (PBA) based on a particular intelligent behaviour of honey bee and bird swarms by integrates theirs advantages. This study compares the performance of PBA with BA and PSO for a proposed hypothetical construction engineering of TCL with materials quantity supply and demand problem. Results show that PBA performs better performance than the mentioned algorithms on a proposed hypothetical TCL problem.

"The Mount Milligan mine, located in central British Columbia, began operation in September 2013 with a design nameplate capacity of 62,500 dry metric tonnes per day, using a conventional SABC grinding circuit followed by bulk sulphide flotation. Over the last few years, many changes have been implemented in order to debottleneck and optimize the comminution circuit to meet and exceed the nameplate design capacity as well as improve the metal recovery of the flotation circuit. This paper discusses changes, grouped into mechanical modifications, projects, and operational changes. The implementation of these changes as well as ongoing challenges and potential solutions will also be discussed.INTRODUCTION The Mount Milligan mine began production in the fall of 2013. It is a conventional truck-shovel open pit gold and copper mine and concentrator with a 62,500 tpd design capacity copper-gold flotation processing plant. The average head grades for the life of mine are 0.18% Cu and 0.39 g/t Au. At full capacity, the mine produces an average 400 dry tonnes per day of copper-gold concentrate containing approximately 21.5% Cu and 50-60 g/t Au. Current mine life is 21 years. This paper will discuss a selection of the operational, engineering, and administrative changes that have been made at the site since the publication of An Update on Reaching Nameplate Throughput and Continuous Improvement at Mount Milligan (Yue, 2017). PLANT FLOWSHEET CONFIGURATION Run-of-mine ore is crushed through a 60-110 gyratory crusher to a top size of seven inches. Up to 100% of the gyratory crusher product is diverted to the secondary crushing circuit by a moveable gate. The material diverted to the secondary crushing circuit is fed to a vibrating double-deck screen. The screen oversize is placed on a surge pile and reclaimed by four vibrating feeders to feed two 1250 kW standard head cone crushers in open circuit. The screen undersize is combined with the crusher discharge and returns to the conveyor feeding the coarse ore stockpile along with primary crusher product that by-passes the diverter gate."

"Arsenic contained in minerals sulphides such as enargite and tennantite can represent not only a significant penalty element in base metals production, but also a disadvantage to the environment through producing the toxic emissions to the atmosphere. The achieving separation of arsenic bearing minerals either at an early stage in floatation or from the floatation concentration is significantly beneficial to the economic. However, there was no feasible commercial method of separation at the flotation stage because of its similar flotation properties with many other copper sulphides. In this work, the selective floatation of enargite from copper sulphide concentrate containing maily covllite, chalcoctie, bornite and enargite was investigated. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.2%, Cu 22% and a high arsenic bulk concentrate with As 7.65%,Cu 33.65% were obtained. It was indicated that Ca(ClO)2 is the effective depressor and the optimum floatation condition was obtained. Most enargite could be floated at pH 11 and controlling the pulp potential at 290 mV SHE. Furthermore, the arsenic removal from the high arsenic bulk concentrate by hydrometallurgy methods was study. The results showed that the reaction temperature and the concentrations of NaOH were the most important variables affecting the rate of arsenic removal. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.24%, Cu 37.80% was obtained in the optimum leaching condition.INTRODUCTIONArsenic is mainly produced as a by-product of base metals smelting, in particular copper concentrate. China has imposed an upper limit of 0.50% arsenic for concentrates entering (Long et al., 2012). Arsenic amount of copper concentrate within 0.40% has also been imposed in China, and above which will be introduced about 50 RMB penalties per ton for each 0.10% increasing by smelters now. Therefore, it is necessary to remove arsenic from the copper concentrate.In copper concentrate, arsenic is mainly in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS), enargite (Cu3AsS4) or tennantite (Cu12As4S13). There are two types of arsenic in the separation of copper and arsenic: arsenopyrite and arsenic bearing copper mineral. It is easier to separate arsenopyrite from the copper sulphide by flotation in comparsion with the separation of enargite or tennantite from non-arsenic copper minerals (Pineda et al., 2015). The main difficulty in the separation of arsenic copper mineral from non-arsenic copper sulphides is their extremely similar floatability, which depends on the fact that tennantite and enargite contain high copper content (Pineda et al., 2015)."

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. "We combined stepwise regression and constrained regression statistical method to obtain the best boundary conditions for the calculation of in-situ stress field in Wushaoling tunnel using finite element method. Our numerical results reveal that: the main geologic factors contributing to the initial background stress are gravity and tectonics; the principal stress values would drop in fault zones; the angle between the maximal horizontal stress and the axis of Wushaoling tunnel is acute; Wushaoling tunnel tends to become stable when this tunnel has 2:1 ratio of the height to its width; the possibility of rock-burst exists under high stress.INTRODUCTIONStress state of engineering region is an important factor affecting the stability of project. Geological disasters in the project area are closely related to their stress environment. Wushaoling tunnel which is 20,050 meters long, lying along Lanzhou-Wuwei segment of Lan-Xin Railway in China, is the key project of Lan-Wu double-track railway. The region surrounding this tunnel is under a high stress environment. Accurate identification of the stress environment of the engineering area and the interaction between geomaterials and geotechnical engineering construction holds significant scientific and practical value for engineering design, construction, and operation.Many scholars explored and discussed the present-day tectonic stress through investigations of tectonic evolution history (Ding, & Lu, 1986), crustal deformation (Zoback, 1992), focal mechanisms (Yang et al., 2003, Xie, Cui, & Zhao, 2004), and so forth. However, the above methods would only provide the approximate direction of the principal stress in a broad region, and could not give the absolute stress values. In-situ stress measurement is one of the primary means to directly gauge the current crustal stress. However, in-situ stress measurement can only be applied in small number limited by measurement conditions."

"The treatment of an oxidized copper-gold ore by stage cyanide addition was investigated. For cyanidation, free cyanide ion concentration can be an indicator of whether there is copper dissolved in cyanide solution, and maintaining the free cyanide ion concentration lower than 1.0 g/L could be an effective way to prevent copper dissolution and reduce cyanide consumption. For that purpose, stage cyanide addition was introduced to control free cyanide ion concentration within the range from 0.8 to 1.0 g/L. Cyanidation tests results indicate that gold extraction was still acceptable at reduced cyanide consumption with a lower copper extraction. Based on the experimental study, industry application works at Beiya concentrator of Yunnan province, China were successfully conducted. When the raw ore contains 2.95 ppm Au and 0.75% Cu, by stage cyanide addition method, the gold extraction was still 93% at reduced cyanide consumption of 2135 g/t, which was only half of one addition method, and the copper extraction dropped to only 5%, which indicated that dissolution was prevented for almost 75% of the malachites.INTRODUCTIONCyanide with its competency to form a strong complex with gold, is the most preferable lixiviant for gold leaching. However, cyanidation is not inherently a selective process since many other minerals present in the ore are also readily soluble, especially the copper minerals. Muir (2011) reported that every 1% reactive copper present in the ore consumes about 30 kg/t NaCN, which can have detrimental effects on the process efficiency and economics due to high cyanide consumption, reduced gold leach rates and poor gold recovery."

At its Copper Cliff Smelter, bulk nickel and copper concentrate is processed in two Inca flash furnaces and Peirce Smith converters to produce Bessemer matte containing 0.6%Fe. After slow cooling and Matte Separation, Bessemer matte is converted into three main products using magnetic separation and flotation technology: (1) a nickel containing chalcocite concentrate (MK); (2) two types of copper containing nickel sulfide (ME and MR); (3) metallics (MYN). MK is further processed in the Inca top blowing bottom stirring MK Reactor to produce semi-blister copper containing ~4%Ni and ~3±1 %S. The semi-blister copper is then purified in the multi-purpose vessels (MPV) to produce blister copper by reducing Ni, Fe and S content through oxidation. High melting point NiO is formed inside the MPVs. The accumulation of solid NiO and other oxides requires periodic cleaning by adding reductant and furnace matte, a unique process called "washout" at Inca. For many years, the reductant used for the "washout" process has been 15%Si Ferro-silicon. With increasing cost and limited suppliers for 15%FeSi, alternative reductants were pursued. This paper summarizes the development and commercialization of new alternative reductants for MPV "washout".

Abstract Spectrographic methods for the analysis of minor constituents such as platinum-group metals, gold, silver, and silica in palladium and platinum refinery sponge are described. These involve the conversion of the sponge metals to the black form by reduction with high purity aluminum filings in either acid or alkaline media. Standards of known composition are prepared in the same manner from either refinery or spectrographically standardized sponge metals. Samples of the black metals are mounted in pellet form and a multisource spark discharge used for excitation. The range of concentrations of impurities studied are those common to refinery samples. Excellent reproducibility of intensity ratios using major constituents as internal standards, is demonstrated and two methods have noted by which the accuracy of the procedures are shown to be of the order of 3 per cent, on the basis of synthetic preparations. Introduction During the past two years an investigation has been carried out in the Spectrographic Laboratory, Queen's University, to determine the suitability of modern spectrographic techniques for the precise analysis of the platinum-group metals palladium, platinum, rhodium, iridium, and ruthenium in the form of refinery sponge analyzing about 99 per cent of the major constituent.

"There has been a significant reduction in maintenance hours and improved performance by maintenance crews at the MacLeod mine since the introduction of a Maintenance Control system which includes the use of maintenance standards. This paper deals with the steps taken to develop and implement the program. The objectives of the program and the organization and training of the control group are outlined. The work-order system, standards application, classification of work and the preventive maintenance procedures will be discussed.All maintenance information is processed on a Model 360-20 IBM computer, which turns out maintenance records and control reports for management action. Information in these reports, and reasons for reporting, will be discussed and the benefits resulting from the program reviewed."

At then end of this year will be 10 years of producing concentrate for Antamina. This is a summary of what occurred over the last decade to increase production and tonnage above the design tonnage of 70,000 tonnes per day, up to an average of 100,018 tonnes per day in 2010, an increase in production of 42.9%. Equipment currently in use is the originally installed equipment, signifying a meaningful increase in capacity without capital. In this paper, the different phases of improvements and the realization of their impacts in chronological order will be outlined. Figure 1 below shows the average daily tonnage processed each year (tonnage throughput each year/calendar days), as well as the percentage increase over the tonnage of design.

Giant Yellowknife is located 600 air miles north of Edmonton on the north shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. In its 24 years of operation some 7,730,000 tons of ore have been treated to yield $175,000,000 worth of gold.The gold ore occurs at irregular intervals throughout a fold-like sericite schist zone cutting Precambrian rocks. The ore is characterized by 40 to 80% quartz - carbonate and about 10% pyrite and arsenopyrite. Considerable amounts of stibnite and antimony sulpho-salts are also present. Gold is finely divided in the native state existing in complex association with the sulphides. In most instances stibnite is barren but minor values are evident on occasion. Visible native Fold, quite prevalent in the early operating years, is, practically non-existent today. It was readily apparent from mineral dressing investigations conducted in .1944 that Giant ore would be difficult to treat. By 1948 a flow sheet had been established and operations began. In the ensuing years, changing ore characteristics necessitated modifications to some process steps and complete abandonment of others. By 1962 the major metallurgical problems were solved and all that remained was the refining of operating performance to its highest level.With one or two exceptions today's operation follows the practice established by 1962 (Fig. 1 - Flowsheet).

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to give a •brief history of iron and steel in British Columbia, a quick look at the present operations of Western Canada Steel, Limited, a review of iron ore resources and iron and steel markets, and a projection of what the future might hold for the industry in British Columbia.From the Past to the PresentWhile the paper is entitled Past, Present, and Future, in covering the past, which we shall call the time prior to 1947, there is very little to be said. Small shipments of iron ore were made from the Texada deposits by the Puget Sound Iron Company from 1886 to 1907. Total ore shipped did not exceed 70,000 tons. Part of this is believed to have been used in building a United States battleship in 1907 in the Bremerton Naval Yards in Seattle, Washington.In 1914 a small steel mill was started on Lulu island, rolling bars from •box piles and used shafting. This mill operated spasmodically for a few years but finally burned down in 1921. The rolling mill stands were sold to China and are no doubt in operation in China today.In 1916 the City of Port Moody assisted in the financing of a mill which operated on re-roll rails, box piles, and steel ingots made in an experimental electric furnace in Port Moody. This furnace also produced small quantities of pig iron scrap. The backers of the Port Moody mill showed a great deal of enterprise and must have been a very forward looking group, since this was one of the first recorded applications of the electric furnace to small ingot production. Despite their enterprise, the operation was unsuccessful and terminated in 1921."

ABSTRACT The influence of using different extraction processes (caustic versus non-caustic) on thethixotropic strength of oil sands fine tailings is examined, as is the influence of adding a coagulant tocaustic fine tailings. The thixotropic strength of fine tailings at large void ratios manifests itself as a bonding or gel strength that has been widely noted both in the laboratory and in the field. This gel strength has a significant influence on preventing the initial consolidation or settlement of fine tailings. Differences between the fine tailings’ thixotropic strength development are explained based on their physical and chemical characteristics.
