The difficulty of accurately sampling cyanide gold bullion for valuation is well known, and nothing new or original is claimed in presenting this paper, but it was thought that a record of differences in the composition of bullion bars found here may be of interest to others, and perhaps helpful to those who have to do with theevaluation of cyanide bullion. This investigation was made after reading Mr. Sydney W. Smith's interesting paper on the Liquidation in Molten Alloys.*A method was in use of boring each ingot in two places and mixing the two borings for the sample. More accurate values were obtained, however, when the bullion was sampled in a molten condition immediately before casting into the ingot; the sample being so taken as to preclude oxidation of base metals before solidification of the sample.In all, samples from 32 ingots were assayed, and comparisons made between the existing boring sample and the proposed dip sample. Assays were also made of two other portions of the borings from each ingot, and the results show that in the majority of cases the borings sample assays higher in gold than the dip sample of the same ingot.The largest ingot cast weighs approximately 920 troy ounces, and has the dimensions shown in the attached sketch (Fig. 1). Mine water management is often an afterthought in mine planning processes and can introduce significant risks to projects when studied as a stand alone component at a later stage in the mine design. Incorporation of a mine dewatering and pore pressure dissipation strategy in the early stages of mine planning is imperative in order to minimise constraints on the production schedule, to match designed pit slopes and maximise project value for an open cut mine option such as Olympic Dam. A risk-based mine planning approach was adopted during the project selection phase study whereby water management was introduced into mine planning, scheduling and the development of an operational strategy. Hydrological and hydrogeological studies and outputs were successfully integrated into the various iterations of the mine planning cycle during early selection phase to manage the potential water management risks associated with pit slope depressurisation and access to dry working conditions during rapid advancement of mining phases.An extensive network of vibrating wire piezometer sets and long-term depressurisation testing characterised aquifer conditions and demonstrated that hydraulic connectivity exists within the geological profile due to the presence of structures and resource drill holes which enhance vertical connectivity. This connectivity, along with underdrainage from mining activities contributes up to 100 m of depressurisation in low permeability units.A pit dewatering strategy incorporates the mine planning schedules and accounts for operational constraints as to the location and development of the dewatering wells, storages and pipelines. Numerical modelling generated a range of likely pit inflows and dewatering requirements with the average initial dewatering discharge likely to be 150 L/s and reduce quickly to 50 L/s after five years, depending on the premine schedule.Coupled hydrogeological and geotechnical assessments were also carried out as part of the mine planning cycle and indicate that successful dewatering will go a long way to reduce the pore pressures within key geotechnical units during the rapid mining phase where around 300 m of cover sequence is stripped in five years. However, the residual storage in the primary aquifer and the residual pore pressure in underlying low permeability units will need to be dissipated (in-pit horizontal holes) as the pit floor advances. Pit slope design angles are sensitive to depressurisation and dewatering and up to 70 per cent depressurisation of key geotechnical rock units are required. Whilst an accelerated program of aquifer dewatering supported by lithostatic unloading should drive rapid depressurisation in the lower permeability units, intervention is anticipated in key geotechnical units such as the Tregolana Shale and volcaniclastics. The extent of induced drainage will ultimately depend in part upon the mining rate and geotechnical stability requirements. Practical operability testing addressed the potential for operational constraints to mine depressurisation activities such as congestion and mining schedule development within the pit and identified that depressurisation drilling can be achieved even with reduced access availability. Mine operations and planning groups established design criteria and considered the likely inoperable periods following rainfall events of seven to 14 days to manage the base surge and minimise impact on production. In-pit surface water management options to minimise operational disruptions during and after significant rainfall events were estimated used a stochastic approach.

The development of research activities at Risdon and the implementing of a policy of instrumentation in plant processes have, in recent years, entailed a considerable increase in research staff and created an urgent need for more space and modern laboratory facilities. The existing laboratories have been in use for 25 years and are now inadequate. New buildings have been authorized.The new buildings will comprise, firstly, a laboratory building of three floors giving a totai .floor space of approximately 11,000 sq.ft., and a pilot plant building as an annexe to the laboratory building, of approximately 4,900 sq.ft. The laboratory building will accommodate from 20 to 22 research workers, and additional plant operatives will be used for the control of processes in the pilot plant building. The new buildings are designed to provide facilities for three principal functions; the investigation and improvementof existing processes, the development of new processes up to the pilot plant stage, and the control and maintenance of instruments.LOCALITY AND ORIENTATION OF BUILDINGSThe site of the buildings is elevated ground on the eastern side of the main plant, near the main entrance and general office building. Importance of Strain to Fragment Strength in Blasting Induced Pre-Conditioning When a rock is blasted, cracks propagate through the rock causing the rock to fracture. This paper focuses on applying the results from a series of small scale blasting tests were designed to show the effect that varying blast variables such as explosive type and explosive energy have on the resulting strength of the post blast fragments. It was shown that the velocity of detonation of the explosive product affects the reduction of fragment strength. This has important implications for the downstream comminution process. The observations from these tests are then explained with reference to the principles of fracture mechanics. A simple but effective prediction of blast induced preconditioning is shown.

The iron ore industry faces significant challenges in the control of dust to meet emissions regulations and goals, as well as ensuring sustainable operations. This paper describes some of the different techniques and innovative technologies that are being developed and implemented to improve the suppression of airborne dust, specifically through the use of high energy micromist sprays. The utilisation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and simulation is identified and described as a key enabling technology for an improvement in dust suppression solutions both from a level of understanding the source and flow of dust emissions, and for the development of new systems that can be used in the iron ore industry. CFD modelling is shown to be effective for modelling both spray dispersion and cross-wind effects, allowing designers to develop high-efficiency dust suppression systems with a greatly improved level of confidence when compared to traditional techniques. New high energy micromist technology is also outlined as a key element in developing high-efficiency dust suppression systems. Experimental results and industry applications are presented to demonstrate the significant improvements that can be achieved in suppressing or reducing airborne dust emissions.CITATION:Roberts, J M and Wypych, P W, 2017. In March 2012 a combined BHP Billiton and Hatch team embarked on a program to improve the concentrate burner efficiency of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. A multi-faceted approach including an analysis of the furnace using operational knowledge and first principles engineering led to the design and supply of a new central-lance (disperser). A new, patented, swirl method of introducing the copper concentrate into the furnace was developed to integrate with the existing concentrate burner. Plant trials in 2014 demonstrated an increase of nearly 10 percent in the oxygen efficiency of the furnace. THE flotation plant at Mount Lyell was erected, primarily, for the treatment of ore from the Lyell Comstock mine. These workings are situated over a mile in a direct line north of the North Mount Lyell mine, and are connected with the Reduction Work at Queenstown by a 2-ft. gauge steel tramway via the Queen River valley a distance of 7 miles. The property was purchased from the Mount Lyell Comstock Copper Co. After the disastrous fire in the North Mount Lyell mine in October, 1912, steps were immediately taken to make Lyell Comstock ore available for treatment, in order to relieve distress caused by any prolonged stoppage of work, and subsequently 13,032 tons of ore, averaging 3.38 %copper, 0.28 oz. silver, and 0.034 oz. gold; were smelted. When operations were resumed at the North Mount Lyell mine, it was evident that there was no economic advantage in smelting Lyell Comstock ore as compared with the higher value North Mount Lyell ore, which was also a better flux for the Mount Lyell pyrites, and that the future of the Lyell Comstock ore depended upon cheap mining and successful concentration of the ore. Therefore, extensive trenching and diamond-drilling was carried out, and a sufficiently large quantity of ore proved available for cheap extraction by open-cut methods. At the same time bulk tests by flotation were carried out at the Minerals Separation testing plant in Melbourne on different classes of ore from the Mount Lyell Comstock mine proper, followed by laboratory tests at Queenstown on all classes of ore available. All these tests demonstrated that the ore was amenable to the process, provided that it was ground finely enough. For establishing sustainable material cycle process in human system, a brand new concept should be created, which could recycle the waste materials, which are land-filled and discarded under present economical situation. The concept of 'RtoS' (Reserve (of waste) to Stock) to create 'artificial deposit' of the materials concentrate is one of the best ideas to be applied. From this viewpoint, separation technology, in especial, solid phase separation such as mineral processing technology contributes much to the concentration, making 'artificial deposit' with less energy consumption compared with melting and/or dissolving technologies. Results of rare metals concentration in the e-waste are also introduced as an example with combining novel comminution and parts/powder separation.

The conclusions reached by den Tex after a study of the fabric of some rocks from Broken Hill have been used to support the epigenetic hypothesis for the origin of the ore, first by Edwards (1959, p. 70) and then by Stillwell (1962, p. 131) in his criticism of Segnit's (1961) views. Den Tex claimed that the petrofabric study provided "independent evidence that the ore, at least in its present form, post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area concerned".Repetition of this claim by Edwards and by Stillwell and the lack of any criticism of den Tex's work for more than three years implies its general acceptance by geologists in Australia. Therefore it appears necessary to examine parts of den Tex's paper in detail to show that his, conclusions are unwarranted. The major weaknesses in his study are that1. the petrofabric study was inadequate to warrant any major conclusions, and2. the petrofabric data allow alternative conclusions.Den Tex made a single visit to the field, collected six carefully selected specimens and presented quartz and· biotitepetrofabric diagrams for two specimens, quartz-diagrams alone for three more and included three diagrams of the orientation of c-axes and fractures in one specimen. It is not reasonable to come to firm conclusions about the origin of such a complex area as Broken Hill on such inadequate data, despite den Tex's claim (p. 87, lines 22 and 23) that "a thorough investigation of the quartz-fabric of the wall rock was undertaken".Den Tex's interpretation of each diagram is open to criticism, and alternative (and to my mind, preferable) interpretations may be made. The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

Geological hazards such as faulting, basement ridges, and zones of "thin" (< 6 m) coal have a major impact on mining economics of underground operations in Huntly Coalfield. Experience has shown that drillhole-based investigations do not yield sufficiently detailed models of the coal seam to allow management of the planning risks associated with these hazards. Consequently, operational performance is affected by unplanned costs associated with lower productivity, loss of coal reserves, and expensive strata control remedies in problem ground conditions. Huntly Coalfield is a challenging environment for acquisition of good quality seismic reflection data due to the very thick (10-85m) weathering layer. Since 1994, successful acquisition of 2D and 3D data has been achieved through a combination of careful testing of technical parameters and experimental trials prior to committing to production recording. High resolution seismic reflection (HRSR) is proving to be an investigations technique which generates accurate and reliable models of the coal seam and associated structures, such as normal faults and topography of the surface on which the coal seam rests. The HRSR technique has been applied and developed in the Okowhao Sector where Huntly East Mine is developing and extracting coal reserves. Results of a recent 3D survey demonstrate that this technique is capable of revolutionising risk management in mine planning for underground mines in structurally complicated coal deposits.

With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system. The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is located 120 km south east of Perth, Western Australia. The operation is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd and mined by contractor Henry Walker Eltin (HWE). The mine has been operating since 1987 with ore extracted from a series of pits along strike. Ore is contained within the basement rock, which is overlain by a cap rock layer and transition zone. Cap rock and basement zones require blasting.As the mine neared completion, a high-grade deposit was discovered within 50 m of an existing Western Power substation and 100 m from the processing mill. The substation provides power to the Boddington area and is a back-up power supply to the city of Perth. Due to the delicate nature of the transformers located at the power station, overhead power lines and the mill, blasting in the area was considered very high risk. As such blasting needed to be controlled for flyrock, airblast and most importantly peak vibration and frequency limits which had the potential to damage the transformers.The mine was due for closure in March 2001. The decision to mine the pit was based on its high grade, ability to be blended with lowering grades from other pits and changing of the processing technique with the expansion. This decision extended the life for a further six months.Due to the high potential risks a detailed risk assessment was conducted by Orica, Worsley and Henry Walker Eltin. The completed assessment and the major design parameters were presented to Western Power for approval. The ability to reduce the blasting risk was focused on limiting of vibration through controlling maximum charge initiated per delay, blast timing and firing direction, and other innovative control measures. OricaÆs SHOTPlan« and Sabrex« computer modelling packages were used to predict the outcome of blasts.The success of this project has opened the doors for other high risk blasting projects, which otherwise may be left unmined.

The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by Jillle 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised long wall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.

In Australia and worldwide, open cut mining has become increasingly common over the last few decades through changes in excavation technology and ore economics. However, such operations frequently leave a legacy of open mine pits once mining ceases. Pit lakes will then form in mine pits that extend below the water table when dewatering operations cease. Pit lake waters are typically contaminated with metals, metalloids, saline or acidic/alkaline and rarely approach natural water body chemistry. Physically, pit lakes have unique bathymetries, are often strongly wind sheltered and have very small catchments. Nevertheless, pit lake waters often constitute a vast resource but of limited beneficial use (due to water quality issues); with a potential to contaminate regional surface and ground water resources. Water in pit lakes has the potential to be useful for a range of purposes in the Australian context of characteristic hot, dry climate and relatively few natural water bodies. Consequently, pit lakes can be seen to represent either a significant liability or a water resource to mining companies and regional communities. However, the lack of knowledge on pit lakes continues to hinder their proper management. This paper summarises the limited information currently available on water quality associated with Australian pit lakes. Information on pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quantity and quality is not nationally collated and requires immediate and ongoing attention from both mining companies and regulating authorities. Lack of a readily available database for pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quality fails to realise the potential for these water resources by both mining companies and Australian communities. Lack of access to pit lake quantity and water quality data may also lead to failure to manage this significant source of mining environmental risk.

With the exception of occasional periods, when up to 80% of oxidized ore was treated, the G.M.K. plant treated all sulphide ore until October, 1939. The treatment was, briefly, as follows:The ore was ground to approximately 17% plus 200 mesh Tyler and agitated in cyanide solution, after straking. After agitation, the pulp passed through two stages of counter-current decantation washing in Dorr thickeners and was filtered once, to complete the precyanidation stage.The precyanide filter cake was repulped with flotation circuit solution and floated in a Denver Sub A flotation machine, consisting of twelve cells. The concentrates were roasted, cyanided and filtered four times before disposal to the' dam. The flotation tailings were thickened to conserve water and pumped away to a separate dam.The average results of flotation operations for the six months before October, 1939, are shown in Table 1.

In considering the preparation of any paper concerning bearing metals, one feels a certain amount of diffidence in venturing into a field which has been capably explored at great length and in great detail during recent years. Many excellent articles have appeared in technical literature, dealing with the general theory of bearings and of bearing metals, the properties of white metals of the tin-base and lead-base types, and of the recently developed lead-bronzes.The justification for this further excursion into the field lies in the fact that it treats a branch of the bearing metal family which has so far received very little attention, and that of a somewhat sketchy nature, in published papers.The author's object is to give some outline of the history, development, present status and possibilities of the cadmium-base bearing metal alloys, particularly those in which copper is the main alloying element.GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS.It is desirable that attention should first of all be given to the general theory, constitution, and necessary attributes of bearing metals, in order that some of the problems met with during the development work may be better appreciated.Despite some evidence to the contrary, it is fairly generally maintained that an alloy for bearing metal use should be of a heterogeneous nature. It should consist of particles of a hard constituent uniformly distributed through a softer matrix.The basic idea is that the hard constituent should actually bear the load and resist wear, while the matrix imparts the necessary ductility and allows the bearing to align itself on the shaft in service.
