FOR a number of years up to the economic setback of the 1929-1931 period, the greatest proportional advances in the mineral industries in California were made among the substances in the nonmetallic groupings, particularly among the so-called industrial minerals and the salines. During the past year or two, although these have not regained the stride that marked their progress in the preceding decade, we can still record, -some new developments. California produces annually between 55 and' 60 different minerals on a commercial scale. Of these, some 40 to 45 comprise the "structural," "industrial," and "salines" materials as grouped in the reports of the State's Division of Mines. THE latest metal-mine accident report available for the United States is that of the Bureau of Mines for the calendar year 1919. Quoting from Table 20, p. 53, of that report, we find that there were 468 men killed, 7 permanently totally disabled, 321 permanently partially disabled, 7848 injured seriously (more than 14 days disability), and 23,330 of 1 to 14 days disability. We have no records to show what the average days lost per case of accident is, but the records for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. show that, leaving out the fatalities and total permanent disabilities, and counting those in which the lost time was one or more days, the actual days lost due to accidents, for the Butte mines and shops for five years, 1917-1921, were as follows: Accident Statistics, Butte Mines and Shops of A. The figure of $70 per case was obtained by dividing the total amount paid by metal-mining companies under Plan No. 1 of the Montana Compensation Law, for the first five years of its operation, by the total number of serious accidents for those years.

ANYTHING that may be said about "too much coal" must seem rather incongruous just at this time when two-thirds of the mines in the United States have been idle for nearly four months and a temporary coal shortage looms as more and more of a possibility. It is the purpose of this article, however, to deal primarily with the fundamental ills of the bituminous-coal industry, which, when summed up, can be expressed in one word-overdevelopment. During recent years the bituminous-coal industry in the United States has been seldom, almost never, in a state of normal business health with production run-ning evenly, prices steady and the market absorbing the output from week to week. There has been either a condition of feverish activity or apathetic sluggish-ness. We have had, for example, the intense strain on production during the war years with heatless days and lightless nights, followed by the slump late in 1918 which lasted through the greater part of 1919 when coal was a drug on the market. Then came the panicky demand of 1920. Competitive buying forced prices up to the highest levels in history. This demand in turn fell off suddenly in November, 1920, and the market remained apparently paralyzed all through 1921. During the latter year, lack of buying forced intermit-tent suspension of mining in all fields and prices averaged less than actual cost of production.

External quantum efficiency measurements at 300" and 77°K are presented for vapor-grown GaAs and GaAs1-xPx electroluminescent diodes as a function of junction depth and doping. In GaAs, external efficiencies are found to decrease exponentially with increasing junction depth, defining an average absorption coefficient of 900 cm-1 at 300°K and 350 cm-1 at 77°Kfor epitaxial layers of p-type GaAs. It is shown that photon absorption losses dominate at room temperature and, in fact, account for most of the external efficiency degradation between 77° and 300°K. Healever, the internal ('junction) quantum efficiency is also found to decrease by a factor of 3.5 between 77" ALTHOUGH rapid progress has been made in recent years with GaAs, Gap, and their alloys for use in electroluminescent diodes, there are still important unknown factors related to the performance of these de- and 300°K. The dependence of GaAs efficiencies on donor and acceptor concentrations is presented, illustrating best efficiencies at donor concentrations of 1.5 to 2x 1018 cm-3 . External efficiencies are found to be independent of acceptor concentrations less than 3 x 1019 cm-3 but to degrade at higher doping. The fabrication of GaAsi-xPx electroluminescent diodes is briefly discussed. External efficiencies here for planar uncoated diodes are about 0.035 pct at 300°K and 0.4 pct at 77°for x = 0.42. A brightness of about 8500 ft-Lamberts is attained at 77°K and of 315 ft-Lamberts at 300° K. for curvent densities of 10 amp per sq cm. vices. For example, although the external efficiency is known to decrease by factors of typically 10 to 30 between 77°K and room temperature, the exact causes of this are still uncertain. Experimental results of ill' and carr2 with zinc-diffused electroluminescent diodes suggest that this external degradation is almost entirely due to increased absorption losses at room temperature, with a relatively temperature-independent internal efficiency; recent calculations by Gonda et al.3 corroborate this hypothesis. In contrast, Pilkuhn and Rupprecht4 find the internal efficiency of solution-grown GaAs laser diodes to degrade from 100 to 66 to 40 pct as the temperature is increased from

FEB. 17-The past month found the average citizen backed off just a little more into his blind corner staring glassily at hydrogen bombs, unbalanced budgets, John L. Lewis, more inflation, a rising wave of strikes, the country's only active battleship on a mudbank, a famous scientist in gaol as a traitor, a favorite actress on a Roman holiday, and rising mountains of potatoes, butter and eggs begging for destruction. About the only bright spot has been industrial activity and employment, but even these are menaced by the coal shortage. Most industries have orders on hand or in prospect to warrant high operations for some time to come. The trend of the Reserve Board's production index is upward except as strikes may interfere. There has been heavy buying at the seasonal merchandise shows, particularly in furniture and house-hold goods. The demand for goods of this kind illustrates greater confidence in the Spring outlook than was generally felt a year ago. Further, the demand also reflects improved market positions due to curtailment of output and reduction of inventories in 1949 and sustained consumer buying power. It demonstrates the strong support that is given directly to many businesses, and indirectly to all, by the phenomenal construction activity that is now under way. The Commerce Department places the number of new dwelling units started in 1949 at the new all-time high of 1,019,000.

TO THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OE MINING ENGINEERS. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. The committee that makes this report was appointed at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, at Denver, Colo., in. November, 1906. The appointment had in view the drafting. of a law for the regulation of quarrying and metalliferous mining under the police laws of the States, with the hope that the uniform adoption of such a law could tend to reduce the number of accidents in mining. Since its. appointment, the committee has had' under serious and continuous consideration the matter with which it was charged. At the meetings 0f the American Mining Congress in 19o7, 1908 and 1909, it reported progress. At the meeting in 1909 it was authorized to present its report not only to the American Mining Congress, but also to the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the. Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and to present its report in printed form during the interim between meetings of the American Mining Congress. The committee collected from the officials of the States of the Union copies of their mining laws. With the assistance of the Engineering and Mining Journal copies of the laws 0f Great Britain, the Transvaal, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, New aland, and certain European countries were also obtained. These laws were subjected to careful study. The first publication of the committee was a summary of the more important metalliferous mining laws 0f this country. Upon the basis of the existing laws of the States of the Union, Great Britain, and the English speaking colonies, a tentative draft. was prepared and printed in limited number in 1909, for convenience in securing the advice and criticism of a considerable number 0f persons engaged in the mining industry. In this way valuable suggestions were received. At the request of the chairman of this committee, Mr. Frederick L. Hoffman, statistician of the Prudential Insurance Company, of Newark, N. J., summarized and reviewed the available statistics of fatalities in metalliferous mining in the United States. Mr. Hoffman's report was published in the Engineering and Mining

In the first paper on the Russell process presented by Mr. Stetefeldt, in May, 1884 (Transactions, xiii.), the process was treated from a purely theoretical standpoint.. 111 his second paper of October, 1886 (Transactions, xv,), the details of the plant, the chemicals used, and the manipulation in both mill and laboratory were treated. The aim of the present paper is to present economical results recently attained, new data affecting the preparation and manipulation of ore in the mill, and a more complete and systematic scheme of laboratory work. This paper is compiled mainly from Mr. Russell's notes of his own experience. Many of these notes, particularly those relating to work at Cusihuiriachic,* Mexico, have been upon work directly under the personal observation of the compiler, who takes pleasure in thus presenting to the Institute, data and considerations of much interest and value pot only to users of the Russell process, but to mill men generally. The description of the chemicals used and of the preparation of the mill-solutions being' in part the same now as when Mr. Stetefeldt's second paper was published, some use is here made of portions of that paper. No theoretical matter is here given. For a treatise containing also the theory of the process the reader is referred to Mr. Stetefeldt's complete work on " Lixiviation of Silver Ores by Hyposulphite Solutions," now in preparation. To facilitate the consultation of this paper, the following synopsis and index is prefixed. The figures in parenthesis indicate the page of this paper on which the subject is treated.

Equilibrium constants have been determined for the jeaction C (in steel) + H2O = CO + H2 as a function of carbon content (0.013 to 0.74 ujt pct) and temperature (1200° to 1800°F) by using a flow system in which the water-vapor content of various gas mixtures containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen was systematically controlled. The equilibrium partial-pressure ratio K1 = PcoPH2/PH2O was obtained for two low-carbon steels and four Fe-C binaries from a series of runs made at each temperature. By comparison of Ki with the analogous ratio for the reaction C (graphite) + H2O = CO + H2, the activity of carbon in steel (ac) was comDuted for each temperature and carbon content studied. From these data values of the equilibrium constants for two other carburization-decarburiza-tion reactions of importance were estimated. The chemical compositions of the two steels and four Fe-C binaries used are given in Table I. Specimens of Steel E were cut from a 0.035-in.-thick commercially box-annealed and temper-rolled lot of a low-carbon low-metalloid steel. Steel F was a commercially hot-rolled rimmed steel that was cold-reduced at the Laboratory to a 0.059-in. thickness. Fe-C binaries A, B, C, and D were vacuum-melted and poured, hot-rolled, pickled, and cold-reduced at the Laboratory to furnish specimens 0.035 in. thick. Sheet specimens were cut from all lots to approximately 3/4 by 3 in. by gage and were vapor-degreased with trichlo-roethylene and weighed before heat treatment. Aluminum and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron were brought into equilibrium with pure alumina crucibles and atmospheres of known H2O and H2 contents to study the reactions: 1—Al2O3(s) = 2 Al + 3 0; 2—Al2o3(s) + 3H2(g) = 2Al+ 3H2o(g); and 3—H2(9) +O = H2O(g). Aluminum strongly reduces the activity coefficient of oxygen and similarly oxygen reduces that of aluminum. Values of the product [% All" • [% O]3 are much smaller than those found in previous experimental studies and are of the order of magnitude of the calculated values. ALUMINUM is the strongest deoxidizer commonly A used in steelmaking, but the extent to which it removes dissolved oxygen has been debatable. The relationship between aluminum and oxygen has not been determined reliably not only on account of the usual experimental difficulties at high temperatures but also because of uncertainties in the analyses of very small concentrations of oxygen and aluminum. The earliest experimental attempt of Herty and coworkers' was followed by a more systematic study of Wentrup and Hieber.' These authors added aluminum to liquid iron of high oxygen content in an induction furnace and considered that 10 min was sufficient to remove the deoxidation products from the melt. Parts of the melts thus obtained were poured into a copper mold and analyzed for total aluminum and oxygen (soluble plus insoluble forms), assuming that the insoluble parts were in solution at the temperatures from which samples were taken. It is conceivable that the furnace atmosphere in their experiments, consisting of mainly air at 20 mm Hg pressure, was a serious source of continuous oxidation and therefore that their oxygen concentrations were correspondingly high. Scattering of their data was explained to be well within the maximum inaccuracy of 10°C in the temperature measurements and errors of ±0.002 pct each in the oxygen and total aluminum analyses. Maximum and minimum deoxidation values, i.e., values of the product [% All' . [% O] differed by factors of 10 to 15; mean values of 9x10-11 and 7.5x10-9 ere reported at 1600" and 1700°C, respectively. Hilty and Craftsv determined the solubility of oxygen in liquid iron containing aluminum, using a rotating induction furnace. Pure alumina crucibles used in their experiments contained the liquid iron which in turn acted as a container for slags of varying compositions consisting mainly of Al2O3, Fe2O3, and FeO. The furnace was continuously flushed with argon, and additions of aluminum and Fe2O3 were made in the course of each experimental heat. The inner surfaces of their alumina crucibles were covered with a substance other than pure Al2O3, containing both iron oxide and alumina. Although frequent slag additions can change the composition of slag in the liquid iron cup formed by rotation, the inner surface of the crucible must depend upon the transfer of oxygen or aluminum through the liquid iron for any adjustment in composition. It is not clear that their metal was in equilibrium with the crucible wall, but it is clear that it was not in equilibrium with Al2O3. Their deoxidation product, [% A].]" • [% O]3, varied by a factor of more than 50; the average values of 2.8x10- and 1.0x10-7 were selected for temperatures of 1600" and 1700°C, respectively. Aside from the experimental determinations, attempts have been made to calculate the deoxidation constant for aluminum indirectly from thermody-namic data. Schenck4 combined the thermodynamic data for Al2O3 and dissolved oxygen in liquid iron by assuming an ideal solution. His calculated values are 2.0x10-15 and 3.2x10-13 at 1600" and 1700°C, respectively. Later, Chipman5 attempted to correct for the deviation from ideality and derived an expression which led to deoxidation values of 2.0x10-14 and 1.1x10-12 at 1600" and 1700°C, respectively. The errors in these treatments originate mainly from inaccuracies of thermal data and uncertainties regarding the activity coefficients of dissolved oxygen and aluminum. The purpose of this investigation was to study the equilibria represented in the following reactions in the presence of pure alumina: Al2O3(s) = 2Al + 3O K = aAl2.ao3 [1] Al2O3(s) + 3H2(g) = 2Al + 3H2O(g) H2O K2 = aAl2(H2O/H2 ) [2] H2(g) +O = H2O(g) K3 = 1/ao (H2) [3] The experimental method consisted of melting pure electrolytic iron, usually with an initial charge of aluminum, in pure dense alumina crucibles under a controlled atmosphere of H,O and H2 and holding

A SURVEY and critical appraisal of published information about Young's modulus was originally made by the writer because of a complete lack of information about this very important quantity in works on mechanics, physical metallurgy, physics, and other sciences. It was felt that a comprehensive summary of such information about Young's modulus might be of general interest and may suggest new problems or lines of attack on other problems that involve E. Hence this paper has been prepared even though it is only a review, with no new ideas or experimental data. The references are only those used in assembling the paper. No attempt was made to compile a complete bibliography on the subject of Young's modulus. CALCULATION OF YOUNG'S MODULUS FROM THEORETICAL OR EMPIRICAL CONSIDERATIONS Many attempts have been made to compute E from theoretical considerations. The earliest calculations were probably those of Tomlenson (1883) and Southerland (1891), but Fessenden 41,42 made extensive calculations a few years later and arrived at the relationship: [2E = 78. 101 (_L V] where V is the atomic volume. In 1923, Peczalski,43 working from the same stand-point but with more information available on atomic structure, arrived at an identical relationship, which he expressed as: [E=B(m) 2] where B is a constant of value about 8 • 10 7, p is density and m is atomic weight; the atomic volume, of course, being m/p. Portevin44 immediately pointed out that while the equations of Fessenden and Peczalski were true of the common metals, they gave low values for the refractory metals with high moduli (Fig. I). He showed (Fig. 2) that much better concordance was obtained by means of an empirical equation of the form: [E _ KT'Vb] where K is a constant; T the absolute melting point; V, atomic volume, and a and b constants of value approximately I and 2 respectively. This constant K in the Portevin equation is not necessarily the same for all elements, as shown by Thompson.45 Other equations for E based upon theoretical considerations have been derived by Honda and Yamada49 and Lasareff. 50 The most recent calculations of elastic moduli based upon quantum mechanics are probably those of Fuchs.46-48 He extended the method of Wigner and Seitz for calculating the lattice energy and compressibility of monovalent metals and computed the elastic constants of lithium,

TO all Mineral Dressers, but particularly to those in the Coal and Industrial Minerals Divisions: Ted Counselman, retiring after two years at the helm of the Milling Committee, pointed with pride to the continued growth of that committee, and sang the swan song "Why ain't we a Division of Mineral Dressing?" Our genial Secretary pointed out, handily, that, you see, the way the Institute is divided there are several blocks running across this way here, and one running all the way down here, and another running part way down here, and they all cut across each other like this, and anyway the miners want to be a Division now, so why not you Mineral Dressers be good and not upset the big Institute organizational chart? And anyway again, Divisions have vested interests, and a Division of Mineral Dressing would take something away from Coal and something from Industrial Minerals, and any good institutional man can see that a Division would never give anything up. It was all quite confusing, and apparently not too convincing, because then the Milling Committee went ahead and voted unanimously it is a good idea, let's see what the other fellows think about it as well.

Much new data on the flow of gases have been discovered by recent experiments by the United States Bureau of Mines and others. Although additional investigation is still desirable, the information now collected seems sufficient to attempt a tentative coördination of the friction factors. This study is confined entirely to fluid friction when the density throughout the duct is so nearly constant that it may be so considered. In the subsequent discussion the following notation is used: v = mean velocity of fluid in duct, feet per second. v' = mean velocity of fluid in duct, meters per second. R = hydraulic radius of duct, feet. R' = hydraulic radius of duct, meters. S = the hydraulic slope. P = pressure absorbed by friction, pounds per square foot. p = pressure absorbed by friction, pounds per square inch. p' = pressure absorbed by friction, kilograms per square centimeter. A = sectional area of duct, square feet. O = perimeter of duct, feet. L = total length of duct, feet. L' = total length of duct, meters. d = diameter of a cylindrical duct, inches. w = density of the fluid, pounda per cubic foot. g = specific gravity of the fluid compared with water = w % 62.4. For a number of years I have used for the commercial wet assay of lead generally the ammonium molydate, and occa-sionally the ferrocyanide method. These well-known methods need no detailed description here. In the ore-selling and ore-buying establiahments of the West, 90 per cent. of all wet lead-assays are made by one or the other, and at least nine-tenths of this proportion by the molybdate method. Why should I pay $8.50 an hour for dealer repairs when my own mechanics work for $3.50?" The numbers vary, but that's the argument most contractors use to justify doing their own repairs. They don't realize it, but they're probably losing big money. For instance, it takes nearly a quarter of a million dollars in tools alone to equip a shop comparable to an average equipment dealer's facilities. A contractor must buy a lot of expensive, specialized tools he seldom uses, or else settle for the inefficiency of having repairs done by his mechanics with relatively unsophisticated tools. His building soaks up money in rent, maintenance insurance, taxes. His mechanics demand good wages. It even costs money when mechanics aren't repairing equipment. Mechanics get full wages for slack periods and cleanup time, too. This doesn't count as service manhours, but it's still part of the total repair cost. To help contractors uncover these hidden expenses and find out the true cost of owning a shop, some equipment dealers have devised a do-it-yourself "shop cost analysis form."

The low-rank coals containing 10 to 50 pet natural bed moisture represent over half of the tonnage reserve of the available solid fuels of the United States, but only about 2 pet of United States coal production is derived from these fuels. Increased utilization of these large reserves will result if the bed moisture can be removed at the mine in high-speed low-cost processes. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of the factors affecting high-speed drying of coal dusts. The time required to heat particles of coal is proportional to the square of their diameter, and it is calculated that the probable time in minutes is equal to 6D2. In other words, a 11 a in. coal particle should be heated to drying temperature in 1.5 to 2.0 sec. Likewise, 1/8 in. particles should be heated in about 6 sec. The net heat required to dry subbituminous coal and lignite varies from 240 to 375 Btu per pound, depending upon the moisture removed, and this heat can be obtained from 42 to 61 cu ft of hot gases at 600°F.

A method of calculating formation water resistivities from chemical analyses is presented which is somewhat faster and more accurate than previously described methods. For 26 formation water samples taken from wells in the Texas Gulf Coast, the average deviation of calculated from measured water resistivities was 3.3 per cent, with an average bias of + l.l per cent in the calculated values. This compares with average deviations of 4.6 per cent and 7.8 per cent, with corresponding average biases of +3.2 per cent and -6.3 per cent, for the two methods previously described in the litera-

NOT WITHSTANDING the extremely low ebb of business activity, the nonmetallic industries have fared somewhat better than some other branches of mining. The average price level in nonmetallics, although far from satisfactory, has resisted any cataclysmic fall such as has been suffered by copper and other metals. Stocks, also, though too abundant, represent no corresponding overhang of the market, which should result, in some branches, in a more rapid recovery. Research work has continued in some industries with interesting developments.

IT IS the purpose of this paper to summarize, as far as possible, the metallurgical information and experience gained by the Ordnance Department, during the War, in the manufacture of artillery cartridge cases, to describe the tests to which artillery cartridge cases were put, and to summarize the knowledge and experience gained in this testing. The authors wish to acknowledge the aid given by manufacturers, army officers, and civilian employees of the Ordnance Department in obtaining these data. Artillery cartridge cases are cold drawn from circular disks punched from strips of rolled brass. The manufacture involves from 25 to 30 main operations, which are done almost entirely on a punch press. Descriptions of the operations have appeared in various periodicals and, therefore, will not be given here. After each cupping, or drawing, operation, except the last, the cases are annealed at from 540° to 650° C. (1000° to 1200°F.), to remove all the hardening stresses set up in the metal and to allow complete recrystallization. After each annealing, the cases are pickled in niter cake or sulfuric-acid solution and then washed in water to remove all traces of acid. In some instances, the cases are then immersed in a cyanide-salt solution, and afterwards rinsed in water, to remove the thin layer of copper that forms on the surface of the cases during the acid pickle. The last cold-drawing operation is followed, by the heading operation which, by flattening the head of the case on the outside, causes the metal to flow on the inside to approximately the proper finished dimensions. The mouth, or open end, is then annealed at 430° to 480° C. (800° to 900° F.) by immersion in a salt bath or by gas flames.
