WESTERN phosphate resources which lie in Ida- ho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming, have seen great expansion of activity in recent years. Growth has been two-pronged: expansion in fertilizer use, and since 1949, into the elemental phosphorous industry. Elemental phosphorous, produced in the electric furnace, goes largely into chemical making. Phosphate ore was first recognized in the West about 1889. Production started in 1906, and for many years consisted of underground operations by small companies operating sporadically. In 1920 Anaconda Copper Mining Co. opened the underground Conda mine near Soda Springs in southeastern Idaho, and has maintained and increased its operations since then. About 1930 Montana Phosphate Products Co. began underground mining in Montana and has remained a steady producer. In 1945 San Francisco Chemical Co., one of the oldest companies in the western field, initiated strip mining at the Waterloo mine near Montpelier, Idaho, and later at Leefe mine near Sage Junction, Wyo. In1946 J. R. Simplot Co. began open pit mining at Gay mine near Fort Hall, Idaho. In 1950 Victor Chemical Works began underground development work in the area of Maiden Rock, south of Butte, Mont.: and has since mined there. Monsanto Chemical Co. began open pit mining near Soda Springs, Idaho, in 1951.

Several years ago, we used an electric analogue computer to study the effect of vertical fractures on the productivity of wells in expanding fluid-drive reservoirs. The results of this work were used both as a guide to research and as a basis for the design of actual fracturing operations. In 1958, Dyes, Kemp and Caudle' published portions of the data from this study. The results were released in 1959 to service companies for use in fracturing guides. The purpose of this note is to discuss the experimental conditions and assumptions which were made to derive the information which is already partially a matter of public record. ASSUMPTIONS This study applies to fractures which extend in a vertical plane symmetrically from the well. For simplicity, we chose to study the case of a well in a square drainage area with its fractures extending toward two of its nearest neighbors. We have assumed no migration of fluid across the boundary of this area. The quadrant shown in Fig. 1 models this system. We made the usual assumptions that the reservoir is homogeneous and isotropic, that the fluid is homogeneous and that production is effected by fluid-expansion drive. We also assumed that the fracture extends from top to bottom of the reservoir. Of more practical interest is our assumption that the fracture does not change the size of the drainage area. This premise is appropriate if all the wells in the reservoir are fractured in the same way. But where a single well is fractured, its drainage area may be enlarged at the expense of its neighbors. This could be of economic importance. The assumption that the fracture will not extend beyond the established drainage area of the well also limits the application of the results. Such long frac- tures will yield benefits in excess of those predicted here. When we assume homogeneity, we disregard the frequently observed zone of damage in the vicinity of the well. Where damage is severe, the benefits resulting from by-passing it will far exceed those predicted by this study. All comparisons were made of systems producing in the semi-steady state. By this we mean that equal volumes contributed equally to flow (pressure was dropping at a uniform rate throughout the system) when the rate of flow was observed. Most western industrial sands are feldspathic and contain feldspars in variahle amounts. A few deposits will show alumina contents of less than one per cent while others will contain over twelve per cent alumina. Some industries are not especially concerned with the amount of contained feldspar but are interested only in color and in size gradations. Other industries, however, are very much interested in alumina content and set up quite rigid specifications as to this content. Several western plants are beneficiating crude sands both to reduce the iron content and to control the feldspar content. At present, most of these plants are using flotation processes for both controls although a few plants do use magnetic separators for the reduction of iron content. Some work has also been done with electrostatic separators for the feldspar-quartz splits. The Sand Division of Del Monte Properties Company, Pebble Beach, California, has been operating a flotation plant for iron removal and the separation of quartz and feldspar since 1950. As mentioned before, control of alumina, especially in the quartz product, is very important. Some users require an alumina content of less than two per cent and others will demand a product of less than one per cent Al2,O3,. The standard Quinolate method for determining alumina is lengthy and time consuming. The HF —H2SO4 evaporation step is especially critical and, if forced, spattering is apt to occur with a resulting loss of sample. Standard procedure is to evaporate to dry ness overnight at a low temperature. Even with forcing under optimum conditions the procerlnre will take two or three hours to complete. A new method has been developed which allows an alumina determination to be made, in 10 or 15 minutes, on a sample of the quartz product as it is being produced. This pocedure, although simply an approximation, has been most helpful in showing whether or not the product being formed is meeting specifications. This procedure has also allowed a great reduction in samples formerly taken and analysed by the orthodox method. Whether a sample assays 1.75% A12O3, or 1.95% .41,0, is not so important as the fact that it is below the allowable maximum of 2.00%. Similar thinking would apply to products required to contain less than 1.00% A1,0,. The step by step procedures for the method are as follows: 1. Collect sample, drain or filter, and dry. 2. Split sample through standard Jones sample cutter to quarter or eighth sample, depending on size of original sample taken, then split down to about 5 grams through Sepor micro-splitter. 3. Screen through 50 mesh sieve (U.S. Series) and reject undersize. 4. Weigh out 2 grams and place in platinum crucible. 5. Etch with 3-5 mls 38.40% HF for 1 minute at room temp. 6. Decant and wash. 7. Stain for two minutes in same crucible with a 1% water solution of Nigrosene dye. 8. Decant and wash well. 9. Dry.

A method is derived for obtaining the distribution of sphere diameters and plate thicknesses (or pearlite spacings) from size distribution functions obtained along randomly oriented lines. The method described offers several advantages over existing methods. IT is often of interest to measure not only the average particle size but also the distribution in sizes of particles dispersed in an opaque material, such as an alloy. Particles of a single size will exhibit a range of apparent sizes on the plane of polish. If the sample contains a distribution of particle sizes, the distribution of observed sizes on the plane of polish is related to the distribution of actual particle sizes by an integral equation, For example, a distribution of sphere sizes, N(r),

[Two of the most useful and important equations available to the metallurgist for the study of plastic deformation of metals are the Huber-von Mises-Hencky1-3 and the St. Venant7-10 equations. HUBER-VON MISES-HENCKY EQUATION The Huber-von Mises-Hencky equation answers the question: When does plastic flow occur in metal that is subjected to a multi-axial stress? It occurs, according to this equation, when the three principal stresses,? al, a2, and a3 satisfy the equation: (s1 - s2)2 + (s 2 - s 3)2 + (s 1 ? s3)2 = 2K2 [I] Here K is the yield strength of the material as determined in an ordinary tensile test. If the quantities a1, a2, and a3 are assigned to the coordinates of a Cartesian three-dimensional system, this expression describes a cylinder whose axis of symmetry is inclined at equal angles to the three coordinate axes4,5 (Fig. I). The radius of this cylinder is v2/3K. For the purpose of simplicity, it is sometimes advantageous to ascribe the values s 1/K = si, s 2/K = s2, s 2/K = s3 to the three coordinate axes instead of the principal stress alone. In this case, Eq. I becomes (s1 - S2)2 + (S2 - S3)2 + (Sl - S3)2 = 2 [2] and the radius of the cylinder becomes 2/3v. In the latter method of representation, a point lying inside the cylinder indicates that the metal will react elastically, whereas a point lying on the cylindrical surface indicates that the metal will behave plastically. Some of the geometric features of this cylinder are worthy of study. Let us inquire first as to what interpretation may be placed upon what we will choose to call the "circles of latitude" of the cylinder (L in Fig. I) and the "meridians" of the cylinder (M in Fig. I). Circles of Latitude Circles of latitude are formed by allowing a plane, passing perpendicular to the cylinder axis, to intersect with the cylinder. Any point, P, on this circle is presumed to have the coordinates s1, s2, and s3. The coordinates of the point resulting from the intersection of the plane and the cylinder axis will be a, a, and a (since the cylinder axis is equally inclined to the three coordi¬nate axes). The refraction seismic method has been used as an indirect means of exploring for fluorspar in southern Illinois by the Illinois State Geological Survey. Use of the method has been restricted to those areas where mineralization is associated with faults, a restriction necessitated by the operating principles of the refraction method. The seismic data enable the interpreter to locate fault zones in the subsurface and, under ideal circumstances, to make estimates of dip direction and magnitude and vertical displacement provided the local stratigraphic units are known and are geophysically recognizable. In this instance, refraction seismic exploration has been successful in the surface mapping of well-developed faults, both simple and complex with which fluorspar may or may not be associated. However, less clear results have been obtained where faulting has been less severe and where there are numerous accompanying mineralized joints.

Free energies, heats, and entropies of mixing of solid Fe-Au alloys have been measured by the galvanic cell method between 800° and 900°C. A positive deviation from Raoult's law and a large excess entropy of mixing were observed, both attributable to lattice distortion caused by the disparity in component atom sizes. Since the terminal solid solutortiontions are not regular, thermodynamic properties computed from the location of the mis-cibility gap do not agree well with measured quantities. The electromotive force data suggest some changes in the existing Fe-Au phase diagram. ALTHOUGH a considerable amount of information has been accumulated about the thermodynamic properties of metal solid solutions which exhibit negative deviation from Raoult's law, particularly those in which ordering occurs, relatively few experimental measurements have been made on solutions with positive deviation. This is due to the infrequency of broad homogeneous regions suitable for experimental measurement in solutions of this type, since any marked positive deviations from ideality lead to restricted solubility and the formation of miscibility gaps. Thermodynamic data reported in the literature for such systems have usually been calculated from the location of the miscibility gap boundaries under the assumption that the entropies of mixing are ideal, i.e., the terminal solutions are regular.' One of the few binary systems with both positive deviation and a wide homogeneous range in the solid is the Ni-Au system. A recent investigation of solid Ni-Au alloys' revealed that the entropies of mixing were much larger than ideal and consequently thermal data computed from the phase boundaries assuming regular solutions were seriously in error. Theoretical considerations put forward by Zener indicated that high entropy values should generally be associated with systems possessing a miscibility gap in the solid, when this is due to differences in the size of component atoms. These facts suggest that the regular solution assumption is a poor approximation for many solid solutions with positive deviation and that reliable thermodynamic data generally cannot be obtained by conventional methods from the location of miscibility gap boundaries. The Fe-Au system, Fig. 1, resembles the Ni-Au system in certain respects. The presence of a miscibility gap in the solid indicates a large positive deviation from ideality, but there is nevertheless an extensive single phase region suitable for experimental measurement. The following investigation of solid Fe-Au alloys was carried out in order to obtain additional data on the thermodynamic properties of metal solid solutions with positive deviation from Raoult's law and to further compare thermodynamic data computed from miscibility gap boundaries with those measured experimentally. Experimental Method The thermodynamic properties were derived from measurements of the potential developed between pure solid iron and Fe-Au alloys in a high temperature galvanic cell. The experimental apparatus and technique were the same as those used for the Ni-Au alloys and described in a previous report.' Cell electrodes were 1/16 in. diam rods swaged from chill-cast ingots and annealed for one week at 850°C. HE recent papers of Aust and Rutter112 have again brought to mind the importance of certain "special" orientation relationships between the lattices of two fcc crystals on the mobility of the grain boundary separating them. No theoretical treatment of this problem has been offered till now. The only principle published so far that has given an indication why certain orientation relationships should be "special" is the counting of "coincidence sites" according to the suggestions by Kronberg and Wilson.3 The "coincidence plots" published by these authors show, for instance, that two fcc lattices rotated by 38 deg around a common (111)-axis have 1/7 of their lattice sites in common. Such an orientation relationship is also characteristic for high boundary mobility. The accuracy of the orientation relationship needed for high mobility is not too rigid. Deviations up to 10 deg from the ideal orientation seem to be tolerable as can be gathered from the experimental data.'j4 The auestion arises, then. how the density of coincidence sites will be affected by a deviatioi from mathematical accuracy. This can be checked by a simple model. Two sieves are prepared, the arrangement of the holes corresponding to lattice sites on a (111)-plane in a fcc crystal. They are placed upon each other, Fig. 1. One is kept fixed, the other is rotated around an axis pushed through one hole in common to both. The light falling through holes of both sieves is then a measure for the density of coincidence sites. If the diameter of the holes is very small, light intensity is contributed only by holes the centers of which coincide "exactly." INTRODUCTION MANY different shapes of drill bits are in use with hammer drills, but little definite information is available whereby to judge which one of these shapes is the best. The following investigation was undertaken in order to determine what effect, if any, the shape of the cutting edge has on the cutting speed and wearing qualities of drill bits. The bits tested were those in common use, namely, the 4-point or cross bit, the 6-point bit, the Z bit and the "Carr" bit. The rock in which the tests were made was the red granite from southeast Missouri. It is a coarse crystalline granite containing an unusually large amount of quartz and is extremely hard, and on account of its uniform texture is admirably adapted to this work. While tests in other rocks might show somewhat different results, nevertheless it is the opinion of the authors that the relative cutting quality inherent in the shape of the bits would be the same in all rocks. Other qualities, such as mudding freely, freedom from fitchering, etc., might make one bit more desirable than another in softer rocks. DESCRIPTION OF BITS TESTED The 4-point bits were the usual shaped bits commonly made on the Leyner sharpener with 14° taper on the wings and a 90° angle between cutting edges. Some tests were run at 85 lb. pressure with a 4-point bit made with a 5° taper on the wings. This was made by using the Carr bit die. The 6-point bits were the usual shaped hits made on, the Leyner sharpener. The Carr bits were made with a 5° taper and an angle of 100° between cutting edges.

One of the important functions of the iron blast furnace is the desulphur-ization of pig iron before it enters the steelmaking furnaces. However, the increasing concentrations of sulphur in the metallurgical coke, source of approximately 90 pct of the sulphur present in the blast furnace charge, and demands for higher rates of production within recent years have increased the need for greater desulphurization within the iron blast furnace. Furnace operators are beginning to look for desulphurizing agents other than blast furnace slag to accomplish the desired degree of desulphurization. A considerable amount of work has been done on desulphurization outside the furnace with soda ash, calcium carbide and various synthetic slags. Whether the desulphurization of pig iron is accomplished wholly inside the furnace or partly inside and the remainder outside, will be determined by the economics involved. Regardless of which is the case, it is believed that it is necessary to have a better understanding of the physical chemistry of desulphurization by blast furnace slags. To this end, it is the object of the present investigation to attempt what is believed to be the first equilibrium study of the distribution of sulphur between liquid pig iron and a wide range of blast furnace slag compositions. Review of Literature There is a considerable amount of information in the literature concerning the desulphurizing power of iron blast furnace slags, the solubility of various sulphides in the slags, and the effect on desulphurization of temperature, of elements dissolved in the liquid iron, and of viscosity. However, there is nothing to indicate that the equilibrium distribution of sulphur between liquid iron saturated with carbon and iron blast furnace slags has been studied experimentally. Wentrupl has made probably the most detailed study of the desulphurization of pig iron to date. He considered that there are three distinct aspects involved, namely: 1. Desulphurization within the blast furnace (by lime and manganese). 2. Subsequent desulphurization by manganese. 3. The effect of subsidiary reactions on the desulphurization by manganese. The experimental work carried out by Wentrup was devoted mainly to obtaining a better understanding of how desulphurization by manganese was accomplished in the mixer and the ladle. Particular attention was given to the part played by carbon, silicon, and phosphorus associated with manganese in the iron, and the effect of temperature on desulphurization. The experimental results indicated that desulphurization by manganese is purely a process of crystallization of manganese sulphide. The addition of silicon to iron melts containing 3.5 pct carbon and less than 0.5 pct manganese had no noticeable effect on desulphurization, but with 1-2 pct manganese the silicon additions improved the desulphurization. Additions of phosphorus also resulted in improved desulphurizati011 by manganese, but the effect was not as marked as in the case of silicon. It was also found that desulphurization by manganese was further improved by lowering the temperature. In order to explain desulphurization inside the blast furnace, Wentrup considered the system iron, sulphur, calcium, oxygen, manganese. (silicon). The distribution of sulphur between the metal and slag was represented by the following equation: (SS) _ (S)Fe + (S)Ca + (S)Mn .... The value for LFaB at 1480°C was found to be equal to 4.5, based on the experimental work of Bardenheuer and Geller.2 The results of the calculations are shown in Table 1. Although the slags are hypothetical and do not represent the range of compositions found in ordinary blast furnace practice, the calculations indicate that lime is effective in controlling desulphurization only if the iron oxide and silica contents of the slag are kept low. Schenck3 did not claim K1 to be a true equilibrium constant, but an empirical value which varied with the silica content of the slag.

The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $530,000. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.

pH effectively regulates the flotation of corundum through its control of the surface charge. Since collector ions function as counter ions in the double layer, the collector must be anionic when corundum is positively charged and cationic when it is negatively charged. Even a long-chained xanthate will float positively charged corundum. Association of the hydrocarbon chains of the adsorbed collector ions gives rise to increased adsorption and increased rate of flotation. Because of this phenomenon, neutral organic molecules aid flotation although the unionized collector cannot promote flotation independently. Na2SO4 was found to depress the flotation of corundum with animic collectors through ionic competition whereas the same salt activates corundum for flotation with cationic collectors. A close connection between ion association, electrokinetic behavior, and floatability is suggested. As part of the increasing interest in the physical chemistry of flotation, strong experimental evidence has been obtained which indicates that organic ions are adsorbed as counter ions by non-metallic oxide minerals mainly because of the electrical forces which exist at interfaces(1-3). Thus flotation of such minerals without activation should then be appreciable only when the mineral and the collector are oppositely charged. Since only limited work has been reported on the effect of surface charge upon flotation behavior(3) this general hypothesis on the flotation of insoluble oxide minerals has not been tested thoroughly. Investigating the flotation of a mineral for which extensive electrokinetic data exist yields a way to test this hypothesis more extensively. The electrokinetic behavior of corundum in solutions containing both organic and inorganic electrolytes has been studied quite thoroughly' Electro-kinetic measurements have shown that in the case of corundum, simply by controlling pH the solid surface can be charged either positively or negatively. For this reason corundum was chosen for study. The object of this paper is to present a study of the flotation of corundum and to explain the results in the light of our knowledge of adsorption mechanisms gained from streaming potential investigations. This paper is concerned mainly with the effect of surface charge on flotation with anionic and cationic collectors, but in addition such flotation phenomena as collector hydrolysis, Van der Waals attraction between hydrocarbon chains, ionic competition, and activation are discussed. While the present paper is confined to a reporting of the data obtained and some of the more immediate conclusions, it will be seen that the results, in combination with those on other systems, do promise a

The point-source function introduced by Horner' us a solution to the general unsteady-state equation for the flow of fluids through porous media has been utilized to calculate pressure profiles for adjacent wells as a function of time. By trial and error, the time at which the pressure waves meet to cause interference can then be calculated. For this calculation, the time of interference is arbitrarily defined as that time when both pressure waves exhibit a pressure decrease of 25 psi ar the same point within the formation. To illustrate the method, an example involving two adjacent wells producing at different rates has been worked out and is presented in detail. INTRODUCTION The initiation of production of a new well is usually accompanied by pressure drawdown measurements in order to establish the extent and characteristics of the formation. The interpretation of such pressure drawdown data is based on mathematical developments involving a single well in an infinite reservoir. If more than one well is present in a reservoir, the possibility of interaction between wells exists. Therefore, care must be taken in interpreting the pressure drawdown data. It becomes important to be able to determine when this interaction, or interference, becomes significant. This paper presents a method for the prediction of the approximate time of interference between two such adjacent wells. The basic differential equation describing the pressure distribution existing during unsteady-state flow of a slightly compressible fluid has been solved by Hor-ner.' for a constant production rate from a circular homogeneous reservoir of infinite extent. The solution utilizes the point-source function to define the pressure at various points within the formation as a function of time. A pressurizing system was designed and built to apply a radial pressure of 5.000 psi to rock samples. Samples of the Bradford, Weir and Kirkwood sandstones were subjected to radial pressures parallel and perpendicular to the bedding in the system and the changes in conductivity, porosity and permeability were deter-mined. Asymptotic decreases in conductivity, porosity and Klinkenberg permeability were observed over the 0- to 3,500-psi range. From these data, the increase of formation factor over the same range was calculated. The cementation exponent expressed in the Archie equation was found to increase with pressu,re. The rate of change varied from formation to formation. Only small differences were observed for samples taken parallel to the bedding as comnared to those taken perpendicular to it except for the Bradford sand. Above 3,500 psi the data are not good enough to tell if the properties continue to fall-off asymptotically or in a different manner. A possible explanation for the probable litnit of the asymptotic rate around 3,500 to 4,500 psi is that this represents the maximum pressure which the formations have unrdergone during their geological life as a result of burial. INTRODUCTION For many years measurements have been made in the laboratory of the properties of oil-bearing sandstones with little consideration being given to whether these properties had been changed when the samples were moved from their original position in the ground to the laboratory. Relatively little has been reported in the literature on the effect of pressure on the properties of sandstones. The changes in permeability for eight typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure (0- to 15,000-psi range) was presented by Fatt and Davis' in graphical form. In 1953 Fatt' also reported the relationship between porosity and overburden pressure for four typical consolidated oil-bearing sandstone samples (0- to 5,000-psi range). Fatt later described the changes of formation factor and porosity of 20 typical oil-bearing sandstone samples with overburden pressure changes (0- to 5,000-psi range) giving the values of the coefficients and exponents in the Archie' equation, and the more general Winsauer equation', where C, k and m are empirical constants, F is the formation factor, and + is the porosity. During the experiments of this investigation the core was contained in a neoprene rubber sleeve as shown in Fig. 1. It was held between two steel end members which were mounted in a steel cylinder. MOST students that plan to enter the mining profession attempt to obtain some kind of practical experience before graduation. Six or seven years ago it was an easy matter for undergraduates to find employment during the summer vacation and return to school in the fall filled with enthusiasm to dig deeper into the theoretical field. However, during the past few years it has become extremely difficult for an inexperienced undergraduate to obtain even a menial job in mining. This was the situation which presented itself to the author and his partner, T. M. Patten several months before school closed in May, 1934. At that time, Mr. Patten's training consisted of two years study in Mining, and mine included three years' study in Mining Geology at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. With this technical training and no practical experience, we conceived the idea that custom assaying in some of the western mining districts should be a lucrative business. We thought that the renewed interest in prospecting for gold and the opening of new mines should provide more assay work, and believed that we might secure it if we were on the spot where the assaying was needed. We realized that it would be out of the question for us to obtain the necessary equipment with which to establish an assay office. Even if such an office were established we had a maximum of but three months during which to operate. So we determined to build some kind of inexpensive equipment that could be placed in an automobile, or trailer, and be moved from one camp to another. We then began to study the theoretical aspects of assaying and started experimental work with the equipment that we proposed to build.

Apparatus for maintaining constant — but adjustable — pulp level and rate of froth removal are described. The results of preliminary experiments into the effect of scraping speed on the rate of solid and liquid recovery with a semi-batch system are presented. Glass spheres restricted to a narrow size range is the solid under investigation. Graphical methods for estimating the mass of recoverable material and the zero error are given. The semi-batch procedure1 is extensively used in laboratory flotation testing, though the method is subject to variability of moderate severity. Raffinot2 concluded from a statistical study of the difference between replicate tests, that the ptincipal source of errot was the test itself and not sampling or chemical analysis. These differences can be ascribed principally to changes in pulp volume and reagent concentration, and uncontrolled rate and depth of scraping. Semi-batch testing has been criticized1 on these grounds as a means of investigating flotation kinetics. This paper discusses and describes modifications to laboratory flotation equipment which reduce the number of manual operations and lead to improved control. Kinetic studies were the primary reason for developing the apparatus described. It should, however be a useful aid in normal flotation testing. Some preliminary results of experiments are presented.

Results of experimental work on the in situ combustion process were first published in this country in 1953' when Kuhn and Koch described results of a three-well test in Jefferson County, Okla. Shortly there-after Grant and Szasz2 described field studies in Nowata County, Okla., in which several modifications of the basic combustion process were investigated by injection of various oxidizing gas mixtures other than air. In the past five years speculation concerning this method of oil recovery has continued, with a number of interesting papers on various aspects of in situ combustion appearing in the literature3,4,5,6,7. However, only one of these' provided actual engineering information on pattern-type field experiments. The primary objectives of the Oklahoma three-well test were to check operation of specially designed electrical ignition equipment and evaluate problems associated with initiation of combustion in a natural oil sand reservoir. Immediately following successful completion of this test in the Pontotoc sand, plans were activated for a second field experiment to be conducted in the same sand a short distance away. The objective of this second field test1 as to establish a relationship between field observations and information derived from laboratory experimentation and computations. Secondary objectives of the test were to develop operating tech- niques and define operating problems, and to obtain information that would assist in the economic and engineering appraisals of the process. Careful planning was required since this test was designed with the hope of providing basic information on the characteristics and operation of a combustion drive. It was necessary to include test facilities which would not only permit precise control and measurement of the process variables but would also provide sufficient flexibility of control to insure that variables in the combustion process could be studied during the course of the test under a wide range of conditions. In order to accomplish these objectives elaborate instrumentation and several control wells were included in the design of the test installation. This type installation was felt to be well suited for an experimental study, but was in no respect intended as a counterpart of a commercial-scale operation. PRELIMINARY LABORATORY WORK An important objective of the field experiment, as stated previously, has been to obtain reliable data on operating variables which might be compared with similar data obtained in laboratory combustion tests. The value of successful correlations between quantities that can be measured in the laboratory and those obtained in a full-scale commercial venture has been well established for other industrial processes. The difficulty of following a process underground should make such correlations even more essential here. Also. approaching the field test phase of development of in situ combustion, it was considered desirable to precede design of test equipment with laboratory combustion studies under a variety of conditions to establish likely ranges of variables. These included temperature, air injection rate, frontal advance rate and produced gas composition.
