I. INTRODUCTION THE smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at' very high efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of $1.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 tons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. Four coals were treated in the Humphreys spiral concentrator, and the products were examined by float-and-sink and screen-sizing tests to determine fundamental performance characteristics. The efficiency of the separation between coal and impurity was shown to be influenced greatly by particle size.

The general features of the constitution of the B-Pt system were determined using standard rnetal-lograph~c, thermoanalytic, and X-ray diffraction techniques. Three compound were found. Two of these, Pt3B and Pt,B, are formed by peritectic reactions at 523° and 890°C, respectively. The third, Pt3B,, is congruently melting with a flat maximum at 940°C but decomposes eutectoidally in to Pt,B ant1 boron nt - 600° to 650°C. THE low-temperature allomorph of boron (red, simple rhombohedra1 a boron) is of scientific and technological interest as an elemental semiconductor.' However, the studies of this material have been hampered by its reported instability above 1200"~ which precludes crystal growth from the melt (mp - 2200°C). Crystallization from platinum solutions has been suggested as an alternative crystal-growth technique, but has met with only limited success.' The technique depends upon the existence of a significant difference between the eutectic temperature and the transformation temperature of boron. In order to clarify the conditions for further crystal-growth experiments, we found it desirable to redetermine the main features of the B-Pt phase diagram since previous reports on the system1'5'6'7 are in marked disagreement. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental methods used were thermal analysis, metallography, X-ray analysis, and, to a lesser extent, measurements of microhardness. Most of the alloys were prepared from spectrograph-ically standardized boron obtained from Johnson-Matthey &Co., Ltd. (212 ppm impurities, exclusive of carbon and oxygen) and platinum powder obtained from F. Bishop & Co. (200 ppm impurities, mainly of other platinum group metals). Some alloys were also prepared with very high-purity, float-zone refined boron (99.9999 pct obtained from "Wacker Chemie" and extrahigh-purity platinum (99.999 pct) obtained from Johnson-Matthey & Co., Ltd. The reported results did not depend on the choices of these starting materials. Five-gram alloy specimens containing 10, 20, 25, 27.5, 30, 33.3, 34, 35, 37, 37.5, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70, and 80 at. pct B were made by melting the elements together in boron nitride crucibles using rf heating of a graphite susceptor, either in vacuum or under high-purity argon. All alloys were heated to at least 1800°C for -5 to 15 min. Most of the alloys did not wet the crucibles when the latter were outgassed by preheating under vacuum. In any event, no weight loss was detected after melting, and the nominal composition was assumed for all specimens. Thermal analysis on 2.5-g samples were carried out in boron-nitride crucibles under a vacuum of 5 x X torr. The apparatus was heated in a "Kan-thal A 1" wound furnace, which limited the maximum temperature to about 1100°C. The output of the indicator thermocouple was fed to a dc recorder with a 1-mv full-scale span and an adjustable zero. The apparatus was calibrated repeatedly, using the freezing points of high-purity aluminum, silver, and gold. The results justified the use of the NBS voltage vs temperature tables for Pt/Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouples. All thermal analyses were run at least twice and both the heating and cooling effects were recorded. Most of the alloys had a very strong tendency to supercool. However, the use of mechanical vibration permitted reproducibility within *5°C for all alloys, except in the region around 40 at. pct B. Only the cooling effects are plotted in Fig. 2, since they appear to be more reliable. For metallography, the alloys were cut with a diamond cutting wheel, cast in a polymethacrylate resin, ground and polished with diamond paste, and etched with dilute aqua regia, a common etch for platinum alloys. Both copper and molybdenum radiation were employed to obtain X-ray diffraction data using Debye-Scherrer cameras and a "Norelco" diffractometer Diffractometry with high scanning speeds (1 deg per min) using nickel filtered CuK, radiation was used to identify the main regions of the diagram. However, molybdenum radiation was used for the detection of boron, since the latter showed very strong absorption and fluorescence effects with CuK, radiation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Three intermediate compounds, corresponding to the compositions Pt3B, Pt2B, and Pt3B2, were found in the system. (San Francisco meeting, October, 1911.) THE nature of slimes handled in the treatment of gold- and silver-ores has been discussed in technical literature to a considerable extent. The subject of slime-filtration from the practical worker's stand-point has also received much comment, and scattered through the literature of the subject are descriptions of many slime-filtration installations. Articles of this nature serve a valuable purpose and assist materially in the design of new and the improvement of old plants. The subject of the physics of slime-filtration has been touched upon to only a slight extent. The underlying principles are worthy of more intensive study and experimentation than they have received, and the main purpose of this paper is to present the results of such study and experimental work as will serve to make clear in part at least many of the principles which control the filtration of slime. Nature of Slime. Much has bean written concerning an accurate definition of the term ? slime," but no comprehensive definition seems to be generally accepted. The reason for this is clear. A slime consists of at least three different substances, each, when separated, possessing distinctly different physical and to a certain extent chemical properties. These substances are extremely fine sand, a colloidal material which may be and generally is in a coagulated condition, and a colloidal material which is in a non-coagulated condition. Suspending a slime in a relatively large volume of water by shaking and allowing sedimentation to take place, results in the fine sand settling out with comparative rapidity, followed by the coagulated material, which settles much more slowly and finally a certain portion remains

The junction luminescence of GaAsxP1-x diodes containing up to 47 pct Gap was studied. Diodes were prepared by diffusing zinc into n-type material which was eithw boat- or vapor-gvown. Observations concerning the energy and the line shape of the spontaneous emission are presented and discussed; in particular the influence of inhomogeneous phosphorus distribution is considered. The role of reabsorption of the junction radiation is pointed out. With increasing current, the peak emission shifts to higher enwgy. This is alm true in cases where slow line narrowing occurs simultaneously. The length dependence of the threshold current density for lasing at 77 °K was examined for lasers made from the same material. It was found that longer lasers have lower threshold curvent densities, Estimates of the characteristic laser losses are given. Data concwning the range of Gap concentration in which stimulated emission was observed are presented. FORWARD-BIASED p-n junctions in mixed alloys of GaAsxPl-, emit light whose wave length depenfs on the composition of the alloy ranging from 8400A (x = 1) to 5350A (x = 0) at 77°K. Laser action in vapor-grown material was first reported by Holonyak and evacqua,' and in boat-grown material by Ainslie, Pilkuhn, and Rupprecht.' In both cases this was observed for low Gap concentration where GaAs,Pl-, is still a "direct" semiconductor with the lowest conductance-band minimum at k = 0 and a subsidiary minimum in the [loo] direction. As the Gap concentration is increased, the subsidiary [loo] minimum in the conduction band is lowered and finally becomes the lowest minimum for Gap concentrations above 50 pt,3 making the alloy an ''indirect" semiconductor. It is of interest to determine up to which Gap concentration stimulated emission can be observed. EXPERIMENTAL Boat-grown material was prepared by N. Ainslie of IBM by horizontal Bridgman technique. The material was n type and silicon-doped up to a concentration of 10'' cm-'. Vapor-grown material was made by E. Hull of IBM or received from Merck & Co. Diodes were fabricated in a similar manner as in the case of GaAs by zinc diffusion. Details about the diffusion can be found in a later paper.4 All diodes were of Fabry-Perot structure with two parallel sides cleaved and the other two sides sawed. Their width ranged from 50 to 150 p and their length from 50 to 700 p. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Spectral Distributions. A typical display of the junction luminescence of a GaAsxPl-, diode is shown in Fig. 1. The liquid-nitrogen and room-temperature curves which were taken at a very low current (25 ma dc) show a relatively sharp high-energy emission which is band-edge radiation. They also show a broad low-energy emission which is due to transitions to deep impurity levels. This latter emission line may have different shapes and positions depending on the nature of the material. It can sometimes be quite near the band gap giving rise to "bumps" in the high-energy line. The results presented in this paper will be concerned only with the high-energy emission which becomes more intense relative to the low-energy emission when the current is increased and the temperature is lowered.

L. D. GODSHALL, Everett, Washington: This very interesting paper cannot fail to command the attention of every one who has ever had experience in the amalgamation of gold-ores. I wish to call attention to three very important facts brought out very prominently by the paper, namely: 1. The extent of accumulation of amalgam on copper plates in the form of scale, not removable in the ordinary manner; 2. The change in the relative quantity of the two metals in the amalgam as we. recede from the battery-discharge; 3. The difference in fineness of the bullion obtained from the above-mentioned scale as compared with the bullion from the daily clean-ups. From Mr. Bayliss's figures we find that during the life of the plate in question 14,942 tons of ore were crushed, yielding amalgam of the value of $5.03 per ton, or a total value of $75,158.26. The amalgam accumulating on the plate during this time as scale, we find to have had a value of $8340.54, or $0.558 per ton of ore treated, representing 11.09 per cent. of the total amount of amalgam saved in the ordinary clean-up; or, taking the amalgam saved by daily clean-up plus the amalgam-scale as representing the total saved on this plate, or 100 per cent., we find that the daily clean-up saved 90.01 per cent., while the scale represented 9.99 per cent. The above figures do not include some additional amalgam still adhering to the plate after scale had been removed. We are told that this was not an exceptional case at the Drum Lummon, but that other plates have even yielded a third more than the one in question. The interesting query now comes up, whether this experience at the Drum Lummon is exceptional or universal at all mills; and another question arises, as to how long such an accumulation might continue,

A complete rational analysis for design of excavation slopes and loaded rock masses is a desirable but perhaps unattainable goal. Irregular external and internal boundary conditions, poor understanding of failure criteria for large masses of rock, capricious material properties, and the importance of indeterminate forces and inaccessible and virtually un- sampleable rock defects emphasize the importance of experience in this aspect of rock engineering. The experience must be correlated with geological factors. In certain regions the accumulation of such experience through the observation of existing rock slopes in various formations constitutes an important aspect of studies for design of rock excavations.

since aluminum-alloy sheet may be used occasionally at moderately elevated ternperatures, the effects of temperature on the mechanical properties are of interest. Recently the short-time tensile properties of several high-strength materials have been studied at temperatures up to 3750°F.l This paper deals with stress-rupture and creep properties at the same temperatures. The work was done at the University of California as a portion of the project NRC-548. It was financed by the War Production Board and was supervised by the Office of Production Research and Development. This paper has been released for publication by the latter agency. The following materials were studied, all in the form of 0.040-in. sheet: Alclad 24s-T Alclad 24s-T8I Alclad 24s-T86 Alclad 75s-T R3oI-T (clad) Specimens were loaded in tension in the cross-grain direction. Testing temperatures included 94°F., 2II°F., 300°F., and 375°F. Stress levels were selected to cause rupture in times ranging from several minutes to 1000 hr. In each test the following data were obtained: (I) fracture time, (2) elongation at fracture, (3) the complete strain-versus-time curve (creep curve), (4) creep rate (defined in a later section). It is not the purpose of the writer to set forth in these notes anything new or surprising in blast-furnace practice, but simply to lay before the Institute the somewhat unusual results obtained during a period of six consecutive months, ending April 30, 1896, at the Dover furnace of the Penn Iron and Coal Co., and to give, with these results, the conditions under which they were obtained, and all figures pertaining to that period. This plant was entirely rebuilt, on thoroughly modern and improved plans, in the spring of 1895, by Frank C. Roberts & Co., of Philadelphia.

BRIDGMAN1,2 melted metals in a graphite or hard glass tube and lowered the tube through a furnace to make it cool from one end only. Because of the difficulty of eliminating all vibration of the mold, others have raised the furnace instead. Neither way seems as desirable as a setup with no motion of either the mold or the furnace. A furnace in which both the shape and the slope of the temperature gradient could be controlled and varied over a wide range and in which such a gradient could be moved from one end of the furnace to the other, freezing the specimen from one end to the other, at any desired rate, all by means of isolated external control, seemed to offer definite advantages. In addition to eliminating the possibility of vibration due to moving parts, it might also give better control over the direction and rate of heat flow. Such an apparatus was assembled and is shown schematically in fig. 1. Equipment Furnace: A clay-carborundum tube of 3 1/2 in. ID with a % in. wall thickness was used as the core. This had a main winding of No. 12 B.&S. gauge Nichrome V with some compensation for heat loss at the ends. Taps to this winding were made at points 12 in. from each end. Fig. 2 shows details of this winding and of the two end windings. Each end winding was wound over Micanite over the main winding. No. 15 B.&S. gauge Nichrome V was used for these, and again taps were supplied at two inter-mediat,e points on each. The tube was supported in an 18 in. OD black iron shell with brick insulation. The input to each of the windings was regulated by means of a variable transformer. Temperature Regulation: A chromel-alumel thermocouple located near the furnace wall in the center of the furnace was connected with a Celec-tray controller, type PIC, 300" to 900°C range, which opened and closed a shunt across an external variable resistance in the main winding circuit. An "anticipatory response" device also was incorporated to minimize the cyclic effect of the control mechanism. Eleven survey couples in a common pyrex glass protection tube were located near the furnace wall and spaced 2 in. apart. The couple leads went to a common reference junction box where they were connected to copper leads from a selector switch which, in turn, was connected to a type K potentio-meter. This arrangement permitted rapid temperature surveys. The knob on the controller dial was replaced with a threaded brass spool turned at a controlled rate by a thin iron wire one end of which was attached to a gear train and the other to a small weight heavy enough to prevent slipping of the wire on the spool. The gear train, driven by a 1-rpm Telechron motor, contained a series of different sized interchangeable gears and threaded drums permitting a range of travel speeds from 0.10 in. per hr up to a hypo-

THE Salt Creek Oil Field of Wyoming occupies a unique position among the major oil fields of this country. Many years before the beginning of actual production in this area, in 1911, it had attracted country-wide attention as a district holding oil possi¬bilities. Even foreign capital, mainly French and Belgian, had sought out this district as having oil values and spent many thousands of dollars 'in an effort to acquire property rights' in this field which was very largely located on the public domain. Owing to inadequate laws governing the acquisition of oil lands on the Federal domain and a careless practice having grown up among oil land locators of that time, a complicated title situation quickly developed in Salt Creek. This condition of uncertain titles together with the isolation of the field from industrial centers were doubtless the two most potent factors in retarding its early development. After actual production began in 1911 governmental regulations, suits between the government, and the locator, disputed ownerships between locators and claim and counterclaim continued to retard the field's development. It is believed that the title situation in the Salt Creek Field, where potential values of such magnitudes were involved, was responsible more than any other factor for the ultimate passage of the government leasing act in 1920 affecting all oil lands on the Federal domain.

It is almost exactly seven years since the last previous meeting of the Institute in this city. In a paper on " Pittsburgh, its Resources and Sorroundings," read at that meeting, I showed that Allegheny County had produced in 1878, " one-twelfth of all the pig-iron,.... two-ninths of all the rolled iron (except rails), over one-eighth of all the Bessemer and open-hearth steel, two-thirds of all the crucible blister and puddled steel, one-fourth of all the glass, one-eighth of all the coal, and one-sixth of all the pig-lead produced in the United States;" and the object of this paper is to show that, great as the record then was, it has been greatly surpassed since.* Population. In my former paper I expressed the opinion that the census of 1880 would show the population of Allegheny County to be in excess of 300,000. The census report made it 355,869. Production of crude oil for 1940 in southwestern Pennsylvania was off nearly 70,000 bbl., largely as a result of the great number oi abandonments, together with the lack of extension of the Washington and Green County pools. Oil wells completed numbered 51, which is 26 more than last year, but the total initial production of 259 bbl. is only 18 bbl. greater than in 1939. There was an increase of 72 over last year for a total of 209f gas wells. However, 68 7 dry holes were drilled, which is 40 more than a year ago. Thus, 328f wells were drilled during the year, and rigs are erected or drilling is progressing on 59 t more. Shallow Development Oil.—Butler County led in number of oil wells completed, with a total of 27 for an initial production of only 69 bbl. Washington County, with 12 new oil wells, one of which made 40 bbl. from the Fifth sand in S. Franklin township, has 95 bbl., while in Allegheny County 9 wells gave an initial of 86 bbl. for the highest Per well average in the area. This initial was given a considerable boost by one 35-bbl and another 2;-bbl. well in West Deer township, where the Fourth sand produced at 1840 feet. Greene County had only one oil well completed during 1940, and Washington County had 12. The subnormal totals for these counties may be explained by the higher cost of completions and the declining price of crude. The first price change in crude during the year occurred on May 22, when a 25 cut was made. A second 25 cut was made July 12, and was followed by a 156 cut on .Aug. 28. This price held until Nov. 12, when there was a restoration of 156. On Dec. 17 a second 156 increase was put into effect, bringing the price to $I.So per barrel. Gas The large increase in the number of gas wells completed may be attributed to three factors; namely, the recently discovered production possibilities of moderately deep, hitherto little tested horizons, together with increased demand and price. The latter has been made possible by a recent decision of the court, which ruled restraining the public service Commision's prohibition of a raise in the minimum monthly charge to small consumers by one of the major gas companies. A portion of the revenue derived in this manner is being passed along to the producer in the form of higher prices in the field. This higher field rate will remain in effect until a new ruling is made, when it will be reduced in proportion to the reduction of the monthly minimum charge. In an effort to extend the chambers Dam Fifth sand oil pool southwest from Amwell township, Washington County, several wells have been drilled. One of these, in Morris township, washington County, had an initial of 3.2 million cu. ft. open flow from the Big Injun sand. This indicates an entirely new productive area for the latter horizon. Allegheny County had one spectacular well in South Fayette township-—at a depth of about 2500 ft. a 4-million-CU. ft.

The physical constraints for the major enhanced oil recovery processes are described, followed by new estimates of cost. The range for all three options in terms of light syncrude equivalent are $22 to $40 per barrel in 1980 dollars.

Discussion of the paper of Charles R. Keyes, Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 19, January, 1908, pp. 1 to 31. BERNARD MACDONALD, Guanajuato, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Keyes's paper is very interesting to me because of my personal experience with the development of the ore-deposits of Lake Valley. Seeing that many of the important facts connected with the early history of the development of these mines are either now unknown, or have become more or less distorted, and thinking that it would be interesting as well as valuable to have these recorded as a historical supplement to Mr. Keyes's elaborate paper, I present the following narrative: In February, 1881, soon after the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fé railroad made connection with the Southern Pacific at Denting, N. M., the Lake Valley properties were brought to the attention of New York and Philadelphia capitalists by John A. Miller, of Silver City, N. M. At that time silver was $1.10 all ounce and silver-mining was very attractive. Vast fortunes were being made in Leadville and other Colorado camps, and Tombstone was pouring out its millions. Lake Valley, like all' other mining-camps in their early history, had its drawbacks, but the railroad, then passing within 14 miles of it, mitigated many of these. The camp lay in the foot-hills of the Black range, in which the Apaches had their stronghold, and raided, when it suited their convenience, the surrounding country, killing the prospectors and pioneer settlers and stealing their cattle. This band of Indians was joined by the outlaws and desperadoes from the frontiers of Texas, Arizona, and Mexico, who collectively defied the United States soldiers, restrained, as the latter were, by the mollycoddles from the East. Densities of cerium metal and several lour-melting binary cerium alloys were measured over the range 25° to 800°C. A rolumeter, using NaK as working fluid, was used to obtain the data. The cerium, Ce-Co, Ce-Ni, and Ce-Cu alloys all exhibited an increase in density on melting, while a Ce-Mn alloy expanded on melting. FOR the proper design of a nuclear reactor, the change in density of the fuel with temperature must be known. This is especially important in a system utilizing molten fuel, such as LAMPRE (Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor Experiment), since a relatively large change in density usually occurs during the solid-liquid transition. The fuel for LAMPRE is a Pu-2.5 wt pct Fe alloy with a melting temperature of 410°C. However, limitations in reactor design with this fuel have led to consideration of other plutonium-containing alloys for use in future generations of this type of reactor. Several ternary alloys containing plutonium and cerium as two components have satisfactorily low melting points. The system that at the present time appears to be most acceptable is Pu-Ce-Co; it exhibits little change in melting temperature with wide variation in plutonium concentration. Other alloys that have received some consideration contain nickel, copper, and manganese as the third constituent. The proposed fuel alloys are difficult to handle experimentally in the 25" to 800°C temperature range since they oxidize readily, react with many solvents, and contain a poisonous fissionable material. In addition, in this temperature range the alloys pass through the solid-liquid transition. Several techniques are available for measuring the densities and volume coefficients of expansion of solids or liquids. However, the only apparatus that appears suitable for measuring expansion coefficients over this temperature range and through the phase transition is a volumeter. In a volumeter, the indicating medium must be essentially inert to and insoluble in the material being studied. It must also possess a low vapor pressure over the operating temperature range, and its coefficient of expansion must be accurately known. One material that is satisfactory in nearly all of these respects is the alloy Na-78 wt pct K, which melts at -10°C and has a vapor pressure of 860 mm Hg at 800°C. This relatively high vapor pressure at 800°C requires an overpressure of an inert gas to prevent boiling. While a volumeter is capable of determining accurately the volume coefficients of expansion of materials, it cannot be used for absolute density measurements. Therefore, a density determination at a known temperature must be coupled with the volumeter measurements to give all the desired data. The weight-loss technique using immersion in bromobenzene at room temperature proved to be satisfactory. The preliminary work that was done on this experimental program involved developing and calibrating the equipment, and measuring the densities and volume coefficients of expansion of cerium and some low-melting binary cerium alloys. The complications that are caused with the introduction of plutonium into the system were avoided until the equipment was proved to be satisfactory and until experience was gained in its operation. It is this first phase of the experimental work that is described in this report. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT AND OPERATING PROCEDURE The NaK volumeter is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Basically, the equipment consists of two weld-sealed stainless-steel containers of nearly identical volume. One container holds a tantalum crucible and the specimen being measured; the other contains a tantalum crucible and a tantalum specimen used as a control reference material. To avoid temperature gradients, the bombs are located in a copper block inside the furnace. Stainless-steel capillaries of equal length and volume connect each stainless-steel container to a glass viewing capillary. The stainless-steel containers, stainless-steel capillaries, and a portion of the glass capillaries are filled with NaK (22 wt pct Na-78 wt pct K). The NaK/gas interface in the glass capillary is viewed with a cathetometer which is accurate to *0.5 mm. The cathetometer readings are used to calculate the volume changes of the samples during a run. This volumeter is basically the same as that described by F. Knight in Plutonium 1960. 2 However, changes in equipment design and operating procedure were made to eliminate some major operating difficulties. THE activity and enthusiasm of pioneers still prevail among workers in applied geophysics1.- Within the year, new devices have .been tried out, instruments and technique have been improved and the methods of application to commercial problems have been increased in many ingenious ways. There is still great need for more skillful interpretation of results in terms of geology, but oil the whole geophysical prospecting is making encouraging progress toward finding its proper place and function in engineering and geological practice. Spectacular successes continue to be reported, particularly .from the Gulf Coast, where the race for salt domes has not slackened, and encouraging results have been giined elsewhere in the mapping of structures in the search for oil. In the mining field, however, it can hardly be claimed that the same measure of success has been obtained, for brilliant efforts worthy of wide recognition have been overshadowed to some eatent by the unfortunate outcome of surveys undertaken unwisely without recognition of the limitations of the work. Consequently, hopes were aroused that could not be fulfilled, and it must be admitted in an impartial survey that there are a few regions, chiefly in the far north, where the standing of geophysical prospecting is somewhat doubtful and where the course of public opinion regarding it shows a certain similarity to the history of the market during the past few months. Reliable work, however, is steadily going 011 and it can confidently be expected that the methods will eventually be regarded in many regions as an essential part of the technique of securing geologic data needed for intelligent exploration.
