BITUMENS have been defined by Abraham1 as substances of variable color, hardness, and volatility; composed principally of 'saturated hydrocarbons, substantially free from oxygenated bodies, sometimes associated with mineral matter; the nonmineral constituents being fusible and largely soluble in carbon disulphide. The principal bituminous substances other than petroleums known to commerce are: (1) native asphaltites, such as gilsonite, grahamite, and glance pitch, distinguished by their hardness and relatively high fusing point; (2) native asphaltic pyrobitumens, such as wurtzilite, distinguished by their infusibility and comparative insolubility in carbon disulphide; (3) mineral waxes, such as ozokerite, distinguished by their high content of crystallizable paraffins; (4) native asphalts, containing varying amouqts of mineral matter, distinguished by the comparative absence of crystallizable paraffins; and (5) bituminous residues obtained from the distillation of petroleum. GILSONITE Gilsonite, a black native asphaltite 98 to 99.9 pct pure, characterized by a hardness of 2 (Mohs), a specific gravity of 1.01 to 1.10, and melting point of 230° to 400°F (K and S), is mined commercially only in northeastern Utah. It occurs in parallel, almost vertical veins, from a few inches to 18 ft wide and 8 to 30 miles long, that cut across the Tertiary limestone and shale of the broad Uinta Basin. The bitumen is believed to have been distilled by heat from oily material in the underlying Green River shale. At the Rainbow mine of the American Gilsonite CO.,† the gilsonite, formerly extracted in an opencut by a system of slopes and benches, is now mined by shafts and horizontal drifts. THE diffusion of carbon in gamma iron plays an essential role in many metallurgical processes. In carburizing, in graphitizing, in homogenizing, in the formation of pearlite from austenite, and in other processes, migra-tion of carbon in gamma iron occurs.1,2 A full understanding of the rate at which these processes occur obviously requires a knowledge of the rate of diffusion of carbon. In carburizing, for example, the depth of carbon pentration is determined by the carbon concentration in solid solution at the surface, and by the rate of diffusion inward of the carbon. Until reliable data on the rates of diffusion of carbon are available it is unlikely that a full quantitative description of this process will be obtained. In the formation of pearlite from austenite, the segregation of carbon and alpha iron from the austenite obviously requires the diffusion of carbon; the rate at which pearlite nodules grow is evidently controlled at least in part by the rate of diffusion of carbon; it is unlikely that we shall understand the factors that determine the rate of growth unless data on rates of diffusion of carbon, and the variation of these with com-position, grain size, and temperature are available. Accordingly it was decided: (1) to determine, more accurately than hitherto, the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite over a wide temperature and a wide concentration range, (2) to study the influence of grain size and impurities on this diffusion coefficient, and (3) to study the effect of manganese and nickel on the rate of diffusion of carbon in the austenite of manganese and nickel steels, respectively; the influence of carbon on the rate of diffusion of manganese and of nickel will be made the subject of later papers. Wollastonite is a calcium metasilicate, with the formula CaSiO3; containing theoretically 48.3 pct CaO and 51.7 pct Si02. It is one of many natural and synthetic silicates with varying CaO/SiO2 ratios, with and without water of crystallization. While it is a very common mineral, deposits of sufficient size and purity to be of commercial interest are unusual. There is only one producer (1958) of wollastonite for industrial use in the United States, Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc. at Willsboro, New York. There has been a small production of surface material for ornamental use from near Blythe, California. Carload tests have been made on California wollastonite for making mineral wool and a commercial plant for this purpose was projected in 1957. Properties Wollastonite is monoclinic and commonly occurs in masses or aggregates of bladed or needle-like crystals. It has a perfect cleavage parallel to the long prismatic axis. It is rather brittle and some types grind easily to a very finely fibrous product, but other types, due to interlacing of fibers, are tough and difficult to grind. Mobs hardness is 4.5 to 5; specific gravity 2.8-2.9; index of refraction 1.616 to 1.631; melting point 1,512°C. Color when pure is a brilliant white, but when less pure it may be gray or brown. Luster is vitreous, transparent to translucent. Common mineral associates are garnet (several varieties), diopside, calcite and quartz. The nature of the mineral impurities determines to a large degree the commercial value of a deposit. At Willsboro, New York, the impurities consist chiefly of iron garnet and iron diopside which are both magnetic and so are easily removable by magnetic separation, yielding a nearly theoretically pure product. Some deposits in California contain calcite and quartz which cannot be removed cheaply, thus limiting market possibilities. Occurrence Wollastonite is a contact metamorphic mineral occurring in most places within or associated with impure limestones. The deposits at Willsboro, New York1,2,3,5 consist of two or more beds dipping 15-50°E and striking NW-SE. The main bed, 30 to 70 ft thick, may be traced on the surface for at least 2 ½ miles. In this belt, the Pre-Cambrian Grenville limestone has been injected and partially replaced by the more liquid portions of an anorthositic magma. Buddington and Whitcomb3 have described the rock as "Mixed gneisses, pyroxenite and garnetiferous gneisses and skarns." Prospecting revealed the wollastonite at ten different places in the belt, overlain in most places by a garnet rock. Diamond drilling has proven several million tons with probable reserves around 15 million tons. Interbedded with the wollastonite are beds of garnet from a few inches to several feet in thickness. In the wollastonite ore itself the chief and almost only associated minerals are garnet (mostly almandite but some andradite and grossularite) with small amounts of green hedenbergite. Inasmuch as the almandite and diopside are magnetic they are easily separated from the wollastonite in high intensity magnetic separators. If grossularite should occur in quantity other means of separation would be needed. MOST recently elected to the limited group of Honorary Members in the A.I.M.E. is the distinguished Australian metallurgist, Guillaume Daniel Delprat. His citation reads: "in recognition of his distinguished achievement as metallurgist, engineer, and administrator in the production of ferrous and nonferrous metals," Mr. Delprat's ability and experience in both the ferrous and nonferrous fields at once distinguishes him from most of his professional brothers. Mr. Delprat's nativity was neither Australian nor English, for he was born in Delft, Holland, in 1856, and educated in Amsterdam. At the age of 22 he went to Spain, as metallurgist for the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Co., Ltd. Afterwards he spent some time with the Bede Metal and Chemical Co., which had mines in both Spain and Norway, and of which company he became general manager. Other positions of responsibility held by Mr. Delprat before he went to Australia included the managing directorship of the Cordova Exploration Co., with properties in Spain and Canada; of the Rincon Silver-Lead Mining Co., in Spain; and of the Deloro Gold Mines, in Canada.

PERHAPS the most widely used dispersants or gangue depressants in nonmetallic flotation are sodium silicates, which vary in silica-to-soda ratio from 1 to 3.75. Typical manufactured silicates in order of decreasing solubility and increasing amounts of silica are Metso, silica-to-soda ratio of 1.00; D, 2.00; RU, 2.40; K, 2.90; N, 3.22; and S-35, 3.75.* References in flotation literature1,2 to the use of sodium silicates are often weak because they fail to mention the type of silicate used. Metso and silicate N have occasionally been mentioned, but when the type of silicate is not mentioned, it is usually assumed to be N, the cheapest of the soluble silicates and the one recommended by sodium silicate manufacturers as a flotation agent. In the All is-Chalmers Research Laboratories a systematic study was made of the effect of different alkali-silica ratios on the concentration by flotation of two scheelite ores. One of these was a high grade ore from the Sang Dong mine in Korea. The effect of such factors as pH; addition agents; and conditioning time, temperature, and pulp density on the flotation efficiency of this ore have been described previously. The other ore was a low grade ore from Getchell Mines Inc., Nevada. The mineralogy and techniques of concentrating this ore have been described by Kunze. Hereafter these ores will be referred to as the Korean and Nevada ores. Experiments were made with both to determine the effect of three factors—-type of silicate, concentration of silicate, and pH of the pulp—on recovery and grade of tungsten in a rougher concentrate. Average WO, content of the Korean ore was 1.50 pct and of the Nevada ore 0.27 pct. The predominant tungsten mineral in both ores was scheelite, which was accompanied by a small amount of powellite. The powellite and scheelite were finely disseminated through both ores and required a —200 mesh grind for liberation. Major gangue minerals in the Korean ore, in decreasing order of abundance, were amphi-boles, quartz, biotite, garnet, fluorite, and calcite. Bulk sulfides composed about 3 pct of the total weight. Gangue in the Nevada ore, in descending order of abundance, was garnet, alpha quartz, calcite, phlogopite, wollastonite, and amphiboles. Sulfide minerals were 3 to 4 pct of total weight. Batch flotation experiments were made with 500-g samples of ore, each sample wet-ground to 90 pct passing 200 mesh. The finely ground ore was floated in a Fagergren batch cell at 25 pct solids. The natural pH of the Nevada ore was 8.9 and of the Korean ore, 8.5. The D, RU, K, N, and S-35 sodium silicates were obtained in colloidal dispersions with varying amounts of water. The most alkaline, Metso, was in dry powdered form. For convenience in addition, 5 pct solutions by weight were prepared from each of the silicates, on the basis of dry sodium silicate dissolved in the correct amount of distilled water. Chemical analyses of the various silicates are given in Table I, together with the pH of the 5 pct solutions. A preliminary bulk sulfide float was made with secondary butyl xanthate as the collector and pine oil as the frother. The WO] analysis of the sulfide concentrate was nearly 1 pct for the Korean ore and about 0.1 pct for the Nevada ore. The tungsten contained in the sulfide concentrate constituted about 3 pct of the total tungsten in each ore. No effort was made to recover these tungsten values. The scheelite was floated with oleic acid. Adjustments in pH were made with sulfuric acid or sodium carbonate. A 1 pct solution of 85 pct Aerosol OT was sprayed on the froth and sides of the cell during the scheelite float to aid in dispersing the minerals and to decrease the entrapment of gangue particles. Six tests were planned for each of the six types of silicate in which concentrations of 1, 2, and 4 1b of silicate per ton of dry ore were investigated at both 6.5 and 10 pH. All tests were made at room temperature. The performance of each silicate was judged from the grade and recovery of WO, in the scheelite rougher concentrate. Tungsten recovery was calculated on the basis of the scheelite remaining in the ore after the preliminary sulfide float. Testing of each silicate at three levels of concentration and two levels of pH required 36 tests with each scheelite ore. Variance analyses were performed on the concentrate grades and recoveries to determine whether or not the type of sodium silicate, the concentration of sodium silicate, or the pH significantly affected recovery or grade. Results Concentrate Grade: A variance analysis of the concentrate grades for the Korean ore showed that concentration of the silicate and pH of the ore pulp were major factors in producing a high grade concentrate. Also, the silica- to-so da ratio was important as an interaction with pH. The concentrate grade vs silica-to-soda ratio is plotted in Fig. 1. INTRODUCTION The Mount Isa Mine is a large modern underground mine located in North-Western Queensland, Australia. Two ore types are mined and treated separately. Currently silver-lead-zinc ore is mined at the rate of 2.6 million tonnes per annum and copper ore at the rate of 4.6 million tonnes per annum. The silver-lead-zinc orebodies are mined by sub level open stoping and cut and fill methods whilst all copper ore is extracted by various forms of sub level open stoping. The mining operations are highly mechanised and utilise diesel powered load-haul-dump units of various sizes, two and three boom face drilling jumbos, electric-hydraulic rotary-percussive ring drills, in-the-hole hammer drills, rotary blasthole drills, raiseborers, battery/trolley locomotives, a large fleet of rubber tyred service and supply vehicles plus light rockdrills mounted on airlegs, rail mounted overshot shovels and battery and diesel powered locomotives. All stoping production ore is extracted with diesel powered load-haul-dump units. The ore is tipped into orepasses which connect to the main rail haulage levels. On the haulage levels electric battery/trolley locomotives are used to pull rakes of bottom dump or side dump trucks which feed the ore into primary crushers. Following two stage crushing the ore is conveyed to the shaft and hoistod to surface in bottom dump skips. Each ore stream has its own rail transport system, crushing stations and hoisting shaft feeding separate concentrators. This paper will consider some aspects of the role of equipment and machinery in the growth of the mine, will discuss in some detail the machinery and equipment in use today and will conclude with a look at some possible developments in mining equipment for the future, with particular reference to the Mount Isa Mine. A summary of mining equipment in use at Mount Isa is given in the Appendix. THE PAST Silver-lead-zinc ore was discovered at Mount Isa in 1923 and within a very short time many small mines were being developed. However the rich surface ore traces did not continue and by 1928 Mount Isa Mines Limited had acquired sufficient leases to plan for a large scale mine to exploit the low grade orebodies. At this early stage it was recognised that the mine would need to adopt the most mechanised mining techniques then available in order to overcome its twin disadvantages of low graaes and extreme remoteness. The Company introduced bar mounted drifters and overshot shovels to replace hammer and tap and hand shovelling in development work and by 1930 headings were advancing at the rate of 30 metres per week. In keeping with the concept of mechanisation the early engineers designed the Man and Supply shaft with a very large, for those days, cage compartment measuring 3.8 m x 3.4 m. This shaft was the main means of access into the mine for 36 years until the K57 shaft (now R62 shaft) was commissioned in 1966. Man and Supply is still in regular use. Production commenced in 1931 at an annual rate of approximately 660 000 tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore. The mine was mechanised to an extent which was previously unknown in Australia; whilst the concentrator, smelter and power house utilised the most modern and efficient equipment available. Even so, the mine was very near to closure on several occasions and did not return a dividend to its shareholders for many years. Production levels remained at or slightly below 660 000 tonnes until a separate copper ore streani and mill was commissioned in 1953, doubling the existing production levels. The first underground crushers were installed at this time. Production rates expanded in the years between 1953 and 1973. By 1960 production reached 2740 000 tonnes of ore. In 1965-66 total production was 3650 000 tonnes and in 1973 the production rate plateaued at the current level.

The Rhenish lignite deposit in the Nordrhein-Westphalia province of the German Federal Republic covers an area on the left bank of the Rhine River of about 970 sq miles (Fig. 1). Here, in the Miocene era, some 20 million years ago a lignite seam was formed and later broken, through tectonic movements into several blocks, some thrown down into depths of over 1,500 ft. This deposit consists of a single seam, in places up to 300 ft thick, but averaging about 150 ft. In a few areas, it is split into as many as five seams, separated by barren strata. It contains about 60 billion tons (2000 lb/short ton) of lignite which, however, being relatively young geologically, has, because of approximately 60% moisture, 2 to 8% ash, and low sulfur, a net calorific value of 3,340 Btu. That calorific value increases, however, with rising thickness of the cap rock. About one-third of the yearly production of 90 to 100 million tons of raw lignites is converted into briquets. Raw lignite is pulverized and dried to about 18% water content and then pressed without binder into briquets under a pressure of about 14,000 psi. The briquets are being used primarily for residential heating; their sales, however, have been declining sharply since 1963. On the other hand, the volume of raw lignite used in steam power plants has been rising steadily and amounts at present (1968) to about two-thirds of the total production. Huge steam power plants, such as Frimmersdorf, shown in Fig. 2 (which, with an installed capacity of 2,600 MW [megawatt], represents the world's largest steam power plant) with a generating capacity of up to 300 MW per unit and a total installed capacity of over 6,000 MW, contribute about 26% of the total electric power production of the German Federal Republic.

Niobium (columbium) metal in the form of a button has been produced by calciothermic reduction of niobium pentoxide using sulfur as the heat booster. In these experiments with 50 g of niobium pentoxide per batch, the influence of percentage of calcium in excess of the stoichiometric, the percentage of sulfur by weight of the niobium oxide, and the outer-wall temperature of the bomb on the quality and yield of the metal has been studied. The maximum yield on this scale was 78 pct using 50 pct excess Ca and 20 pct of S and at a bomb-wall temperature of 600°C. In experiments conducted on 500 g of niobium pentoxide, reduction with 40 pct excess Ca and 20 pct of S, and at a bomb-wall temperature of 500°C, the.yield of the metal improved to 82 to 84 pct. Some of the reduced-metal samples have been electron-beam melted and the button melts thus obtained have been observed to be extremely ductile and capable of cold reduction to 98 pct without intermediate annealing. NIOBIUM, because of its high melting point (2468oC), its ductility, its resistance to corrosion especially in liquid metals, its high-temperature mechanical properties, and its relatively low capture cross section (1.1 barns) for thermal neutrons, has potentialities as a structural material in the field of nuclear engineering. Niobium and its alloys are also gaining importance in high-temperature technology as components in aircrafts, jet engines, and missiles, electronics, chemical engineering, and surgery. In 1904 Weiss and Aichel 1 produced niobium by reduction of its pentoxide by misch-metal. Since then a large number of investigations have been carried out for the extraction of niobium from its compounds. The various routes through which the metal niobium has been extracted from its compounds can broadely be classified into the following groups: a) reduction of its halides, oxides, and fluo-salts with metals like calcium, magnesium, sodium, and aluminum;2-10 b) reduction of its halides with hydrogen and oxides with carbon or carbides;11-18 c) electrolytic winning from its halides and fluo salts;19-25 and d) thermal decomposition and disproportion ion of its halides26-30 Among the processes in commercial use at present are sodium reduction or fused-salt electrolysis of potassium niobium fluoride, carbide or carbon reduction of the oxide, and hydrogen or metallothermic reduction of the chlorides. In 1907 Von Bolton2 prepared niobium by reducing niobium pentoxide with aluminum. Dennis and Adam-sona attempted reducing the oxide with magnesium powder in argon atmosphere and the resulting metal contained as much as 5 pct O. Mondolfo8 claimed a method for the reduction of the oxides with aluminum. In the case of both magnesium and aluminum reduction, it has been stated31 that by-product oxides such as MgO or A12O3 would involve a major separation problem. Further, in the case of alumino-thermic reduction, the solubility of aluminum in niobium and intermetallic formation have to be reckoned with. In 1922 Bridge3 produced niobium by calcium reduction of niobium pentoxide. Dennis and pdamson' obtained the metal by a similar method with an oxygen content of 0.2 pct. In most of the cases of metallothermic reduction of niobium oxides mentioned above, the metal niobium is obtained in the form of powder. In an attempt to produce massive niobium metal, lock' used iodine as the thermal booster in the bomb reduction of niobium pentoxide by calcium. Massive niobium metal was obtained with a maximum yield of 75 pct containing 0.1 pct 0. Joly32 carried out experiments on calcium reduction of niobium pentoxide on a 2-kg scale using sulfur as the heat booster in a sealed bomb filled with argon. In his experiments, the reaction was initiated by passing a current through niobium spiral wire embedded in the charge. In a typical run consisting of 2000 g of niobium pentoxide, 3100 g of calcium, and 800 g of sulfur (S/Nb2O5 = 3.3), he obtained massive metal in the form of a very uneven mass with a yield of -57 pct. With lower amounts of sulfur and calcium, powder niobium mixed with small metal globules was obtained and the yield was also poor. From these experiments he concluded that this method is not a suitable one for industrial development considering the quality and yield of metal obtainable and the possible hazards with higher ratios of sulfur to niobium pentoxide in the -~charere. In the present work, a detailed investigation on the calciothermic reduction of niobium pentoxide in a stainless-steel bomb in presence of sulfur as the heat booster was undertaken on a laboratory scale.

Cana, originally called Santa Cruz de Cana, is situated in the province of Darien, in the Republic of Colombia, S. A. The river Cana is a tributary of the Tuyra, which flows into the Gulf of San Miguel, and thence into the Pacific Ocean some 80 rniles S.E. of the City of Panama. • The Espiritu Santo mine lies on the S. side of the Cana river at the foot of the Espiritu Santo range. The plateau of Cana has an elevation of 2000 feet above sea-level, and the mine is about 200 feet above the plateau. The map of the Darien accompanying this paper is the only correct one in existence. It was made by Lucien N. Bonaparte Wyse for the Panama Canal Co., and has been copied fur the present use, with permission, by Mr. L. G. Inglis. The dotted line on this map shows the route from the coast to Cana. As this mine was one of the most celebrated at the time of the Spanish occupation, it is only natural that there are a great many traditions and writings concerning its former workers and production. Dampier mentions it, though he does not seem to have been nearer to it than El Real de Santa Maria, the port on the Rio Tuyra, about 50 miles by road from Cana. Senor Vicente Restrepo's work, entitled Estudio sobre las Minas de Oro y Plata de Colombia, translated by C. TV. Fisher and published in New York in 1886, is, perhaps, the best treatise on Colombian mines. He has devoted a great deal of attention to the subject of the Espiritu Santo mine, and has had access to all that dealt with it in the archives of Bogota. It will be interesting to quote a few pasaages from the above work, which seemed like a romance to the writer of this paper some years ago, when he first came across the history. SOME years ago we collated all laboratory data then available to us on the distribution at equilibrium of manganese and of sulphur between metal and simple slags, and used the results in setting up an equation, which proved to be in accord with determinations of the distribution ratio of manganese and of sulphur between liquid steel and open-hearth slag, over a wide range of operating conditions. We now present an outline of our calculations and inferences on these two closely related questions, which are of especial importance because of the advisability of conserving manganese wherever possible. In general. our results show that in the open-hearth furnace equilibrium between metal and slag, with respect to both manganese and sulphur, is substantially attained during the finishing period of the heat, or in about a half hour to an hour after any additions were made. This implies that the end result will be identical whether manganese is added as alloy or metal to the liquid steel or as oxide to the slag. The proportion of total manganese retained by the steel is favored: (I) by use of the minimum amount of lime, consistent with other operating limitations, required to give a lime-silica ratio of about 2.4, which usually corresponds to a minimum practical slag volume; (2) by a high concentration in the slag of MnO relative to FeO; (3) by high operating temperature. Absorption of sulphur by the slag from the liquid metal is favored: (I) by large slag volume; (2-by a high concentration of active (or "free") lime and of manganese oxide dis) solved in the slag; (3) by low concentration of silica, iron oxide, and phosphate dissolved in the slag. DISTRIBUTION OF MANGANESE BETWEEN SLAG AND METAL AT EQUILIBRIUM On the basis that the distribution of manganese between liquid steel and slag is controlled by the reaction [FeO + Mn ;7± MnO + Fe [A] slag metal slag metal] the distribution at equilibrium, at a given temperature, is expressed by the equilibrium constant for this reaction, which is defined as [K" aFPI OFeO ? aMn] where a is the activity of the molecular species denoted by the subscript. The activity of each of the several components, although it is not known precisely, is approximately equal to the concentration of each component expressed as its mol fraction; that is, as the ratio of the number of mols of the given component to the total number of mols of all the molecular species present in the metal or slag, as the case may be. Moreover, since the activity, or concentration, of iron in the liquid metal is in fact substantially constant, the term aFe may he combined with K" to give a new constant K'. Making these changes.

The uapor pressrcres of magnesium over binary alloys of magnesium with twelve of the yare-earth eletnetzts have been measured by the Knudsen effuion method in the temperature range 675° to 910°K. These vapor-pressure measurments were combined with data concerning the tevtrlitzul magnesium solubility and the vapor pressure of pure magnesinm to evaluale the standuvd free energies of pluase jormation. These free-etzergy values indicate that the CsCl structures of the heacy rave earths tend to be somewhat less stable than those of the light rare earths. This dif-]eying- behaviov covrelates with differences which have been obsevz~ed in other alloy systetns wherein a phuse appeurs, disappeavs, or changes crystal stvucture as the atomic number of the rare-earth com-ponent is changed. This behauior also appears to correlate with the struclurul rariations within the rare-earth elements themselves, and it is speculated that cariations in the spatial extent of the 4f orbitals are responsihle. STUDIES of the phase relationships and crystal structures in the binary systems between rare-earth metals (lanthanons) and magnesium are extensive but far from complete. However, the currently available information1-10 does produce a rather interesting pattern. This is illustrated in Table I. If one excludes europium and ytterbium from consideration because of their generally atypical behavior, it can be seen from the table that the phase relationships in the magnesium-rich regions show a distinctly different pattern for the lighter lanthanons as compared to the heavier lanthanons. For the lighter lanthanons, LnMg2 phases occur from lanthanum to gadolinium with the cubic MgCu2 structure, LnMg3 phases occur from lanthanum to terbium with the BiLi3 structure, and magnesium-rich phases occur from lanthanum to gadolinium with stoi-chiometries between Ln5Mg42 and LnMg12. In contrast, for the heavier lanthanons, those LnMg2 structures which have been examined have the hexagonal MgZn2 structure, LnMg3 phases have not been observed beyond terbium, and the magnesium-rich phases occur with the a manganese structure near a stoichiometry of Ln5MgZ4. The heavy lanthanon-magnesium systems thus appear to be analogous to the Y-Mg system""2 wherein YMg has the CsCl structure, YMg2 has the MgZn2 structure, and the region Y4Mgz5-Y5Mg24 has the a manganese structure, and no other intermediate phases are observed. Similarity in alloying behavior between yttrium and the heavy lanthanons occurs commonly, and on this basis it seems likely that LnMg2 phases will be found with the MgZn2 structure in the binary systems of dysprosium, thulium, and lutetium with magnesium when the appropriate investigations are made. In the case of the magnesium-rich phases of the lighter lanthanons, only the Ce-Mg phase relationships have been investigated thoroughly and in detail, and until similar investigations are made for the other systems there will remain questions as to which magnesium-rich stoichiometries represent equilibrium phases and what systematic variations occur in the sequence from lanthanum to gadolinium. Thus the data in Table I show that only the LnMg phases occur with the same crystallographic structure throughout the sequence from lanthanum to lutetium. It was speculated that the relative stability of these LnMg phases might vary from one lanthanon to the next in such a way as to presage the differences which occur among the more magnesium-rich lanthanon-magnesium phases. On this basis the present investigation of the thermodynamics of phase formation was Gndertaken for the LnMg phases. Using an expression for the free energy of a homogeneous phase as a function of composition, a relationship is derived which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. Comparisons between observed and calculated phase boundaries in the systems Fe-Ni, Fe-Mn, Fe-W, Ti-Mo, and Ti-Cb are presented. IT is the purpose of this paper to illustrate how the general free energy equations for two phases in equilibrium may be used to derive an expression which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. The free energy per gram atom of a disordered solid solution may, for many purposes, be represented by the equation:' F = ½NZ [C-V,, + (1-C) VbB + 2C (l-C)V] + K(T) +RT[C-lnC+ (l-C)ln(l-C) ] [1] where N is Avogadro's number; Z, the coordination number; C, the concentration of the solute element in atomic percent; the subscripts refer to concentrations at phase mixture boundaries; VAA, VBB, and V,, are the bond energies between like and unlike adjacent atoms, respectively, at the interatomic spacing characteristic of the phase. The bond energies are usually assumed to be independent of small changes in the lattice parameter occasioned by solute additions and variations in temperature; V = VAB ---------------—— ; K(T) is the sum of the heat con- tent and heat entropy; R, the molar gas constant; and T, the temperature in degrees Kelvin. The free energy of a homogeneous phase is there- fore the sum of an internal energy, a specific heat, and a configurational entropy term, respectively. The compositions of two phases in equilibrium at a given temperature are governed by the minimum total free energy principle. Graphically, this is represented by the points of tangency of the tangent common to the free energy vs. concentration curves of the two phases. The limiting cases of non- Newtonian fluids flowing inside a concentric annular duct are developed without using a model of the fluid behavior. The solutions provide limits with which to test the various models of fluid behavior such as the power law and Bingham plastic models. The results of previous theoretical work are discussed in terms of limiting cases. This limiting case study also shows that experimental work on flow of non-Newtonian fluids in annular ducts should be confined to ducts for which the ratio of the radius of the inner wall to that of the outer wall is less than 0.3 and preferably less than 0.2. INTRODUCTION During the last 10 years the problem of laminar flow of non-Newtonian fluids in concentric annuli has received much attention large1y because of its application to the hydrodynamics of the wellbore. Recently solutions utilizing the power law1,2 and Bingham plasticl,3,4 models have been published. In this paper the method of limiting cases, which has been successfully applied to laminar-flow heat transfer516 will be applied to the problem of flow of non-time dependent, non-Newtonian fluids through annuli. This method permits solutions for the limiting cases to be made without using a model of unknown validity. The solutions, therefore, provide limits with which to test the various models which have been or will be proposed. A pertinent conclusion concerning the region of experimental work is also provided. DEVELOPMENT OF LIMITING CASES The limiting cases for the axial flow of fluids in concentric annuli may be defined with reference to Fig. 1. It is possible to define two limiting cases which pertain to the physical dimensions of the annulus. First, the annulus must degenerate to a circular pipe as the radius of the inner wall decreases or, as k = (k R/R) ? 0. Second, the annulus must approach the limit of parallel plates of infinite extent as the spacing between the inner and outer tubes becomes small in comparison with the radius R of the annulus, or as k?1. It is also possible to ascertain three limiting cases which pertain to fluid behavior. With reference to Fig. 2, as a fluid becomes progressively more pseudoplastic, the shear stress-shear rate relationship progressively approaches the indicated horizontal line more closely. At this limit the shear stress becomes independent of the shear rate. At the other extreme of increasingly dilatant behavior, the vertical asymptote is approached. Intermediate between these two limiting cases lies the case of the Newtonian fluid. Fluids which exhibit a yield shear stress also approach the limiting case of "infinite" pseudoplastic behavior. The microstructure of TD-Ni has been examined by transmission electron microscopy in the extruded, annealed. and deformed states. The tensile properties hove been correlated with the observed microstructures and the results ore com-pared with those obtained from pure nickel. The important conclusions are that the thorin particles in TD-Ni act as strong burriers to dislocntion motion during both deformation (slip) and annealing (climb). During deformation. the dislocations tangle around the particles and a cell structure is devleloped after 10 pct or more strain. The cell size appears to be determined by the spacing of the largest particles and is about five times smaller than that in pure nickel for the same strain. The higher work-hardening rate in TD-Ni compared to nickel is probably due to the more rapid rate of dislocation multiplication in the alloy as a result of dislocation-particle interactions. The Th0,particles inhibit recrystallization and twin growh so that some strengthening may arise from the high density of small annealing twins. THE strengthening of materials due to the presence of a dispersed second phase has been the subject of considerable experimental and theoretical investigation in recent years. One of the newest dispersion-strengthened alloys to be developed is TD-Ni,1 a system of approximately 2 vol pct thoria (ThO2) dispersed in a matrix of commercially pure nickel. This material is fabricated by powder-metallurgical techniques and offers high-temperature stability and useful mechanical properties virtually to the melting point of the base metal. While the mechanical properties of this system have been investigated,2,3 there have been no reports in the literature concerning the microstruc-ture of TD-Ni and its correlation to mechanical properties. This paper describes a transmission electron microscopy investigation of the micro-structure of TD-Ni together with its mechanical properties. The results are compared with the structure and properties of pure nickel.

Arthur Notman, of the Phelps Dodge Corpn., as chairman, guided the discussion. Americanization was defined by E. E. Bach, !chairman of the Institute's Sub-committee on Americanization, who said: "Americanization applies either to the native-born or foreign-born and is that process of assimilation which guarantees the full functioning of American citizenship. Naturalization papers merely entitle one to the privileges of citizenship."

LUMINESCENCE of rare-earth-doped materials has been a subject of interest for the past 20 years. Within the past few years there has been a considerable increase in rare-earth research motivated in search of new and more efficient laser materials and also due to the use of certain-rare-earth compounds in the preparation of color television screens. The purpose of this study has been to seek an understanding of some of the basic processes involved in exciting the rare-earth luminescence which is associated with transitions within the 4f shell of the trivalent rare-earth ion. Single crystals of ZnS doped with a variety of rare-earth ions have been prepared by vapor-transport technique described elsewhere.&apos; Photoluminescence was excited by a high-pressure short-arc mercury lamp together with suitable glass and chemical filters. For electroluminescence, sinusoidal and pulse excitations were used. 1) ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS 1.1) V-I Measurements. Electroluminescence experiments were performed on crystals of terbium-doped ZnS. The samples were cleaned and etched and indium or In-Ga alloy contacts were alloyed on by heating in H2 atmosphere to 600°C for times ranging up to 10 min. Static voltage-current measurements were made on several samples. Fig. 1 shows the results for a typical sample. For voltage V < 20 v, the V-I relationship is linear giving a resistivity of 2.5 x 109 ohm-cm for this particular sample at room temperature. In the range of 20 to 250 v, I varies as V "3 and at still higher voltages (when electroluminescence is visible to the scotopic eye) current varies as Vs up to 600 v, all at room temperature. At 77"K, for V > 200 v, / I vge5 up to 1000 v. The V-I characteristics at room temperature follow reasonably well the behavior predicted by Lampert&apos; for one carrier space-charge-limited current in an insulator with traps although, as shown later, the expression derived by Lampert2 for the threshold for trap-filled law behavior Vtfl yields an unrealistically low value for trap density if we use the experimental value of 300 v for VtfL. Assuming the case for shallow trapping, the transition from Ohm&apos;s law behavior to space-charge-limited behavior occurs at voltage Vtr given by where no = thermally generated free carrier density, L = length of the sample, e = static dielectric constant, 6 = ratio of free to trapped electron densities, e = electron charge. For the ZnS:Tb crystal, L = 0.5 mm, E = 8.3 €0, Vtr - 20 v, and no = 5 x 10&apos; per cu cm, calculated from the ohmic behavior assuming electron mobility of 100 sq cm per v-sec. This results in 9 = 0= As more and more electrons are injected the Fermi level moves up in the forbidden gap toward the conduction band. If we assume a single-energy level for traps (which is not strictly correct, as we will show later), the current voltage characteristic is profoundly affected when the Fermi level crosses the trap level. The traps are now filled and injected carriers can no longer be immobilized in traps. Hence, current rises sharply with voltage. The transition from space-charge-limited behavior to the trap-filled behavior occurs at voltage VTFL given by

For several years International Minerals & Chemical Corp. has used a radiation method to assay potassium content of products from potash and feldspar beneficiation. The procedure is rapid, accurate, and inexpensive and is easily handled, if necessary, by nontechnical personnel. Data are presented to show the accuracies that may be expected if the technique is used for control of pilot plants or large- scale plants. Natural potassium is composed of three isotopes -K39, K40 and K41. Five other isotopes, artificially produced, have been detected. In natural potassium only the K40 isotope, with a half life of 1.4 x 109 years, is radioactive. Its modes of decay are beta and gamma rays, positrons, and x-rays. Only the more abundant beta rays, however, are important in radiation measurements using geiger tubes.
