THE pronounced and usually deleterious effects of sulphur on all ferrous metals and the resultant necessity for its control in metallurgical processes have stimulated many investigations of the system iron-sulphur. The data required for thermodynamic study of the behavior of sulphur in molten iron and steel include the activity and free energy of the dissolved sulphur and its heat of solution. Such data are also of theoretical interest since there is all too little information available concerning solutions of nonmetallic solutes in metallic solvents. It was the purpose of this investigation to attack the problem very directly by a study of equilibrium at several temperatures in the reaction H2 (gas) + S = H2S (gas) [1] K1 = PH2S /PH2 as where the sulphur is present in the liquid iron in amounts up to several percent by weight. Such a method of attack is not new since several careful studies have already been reported. It is planned, however, to extend the study to other metallic solvents and particularly to determine the effects of the various alloying elements on the activity of sulphur in liquid iron. This paper presents the results on molten iron-sulphur alloys containing up to 4 pct sulphur in the temperature range 1530°-1730°C. As a result of the studies on recrystallization and crystal growth made in this laboratory, certain theories have been developed. These are expressed briefly in a paper by Dean and Hudson.' One of the principal points brought out in that paper is that in the deformation of a crystal, the energy supplied is distributed to the atoms of the lattice, probably by the forced formation of molecules. It is found that a Maxwellian distribution of the energy among these atoms will account for the grain growth at various temperatures. According to such a distribution the number of atoms with energy above a certain critical value, E, necessary for recrystallization at the absolute temperature T is given by n = Ne-E/kT where N is the total number of atoms. It is apparent that if this line of reasoning is correct, a metal which has been cold-worked and reheated to a temperature below that of complete annealing will have the atoms with the higher energy recrystallized, that is, reduced to normal energy and there will remain only atoms below a certain energy. If this metal is again cold-worked the peak in the number-energy distribution curve will, as compaied with its position after the first cold-working, be displaced toward the regions of lower energies, that is, the temperature of recrystallization will be higher. By a repetition of this process the position of this maximum and hence the recrystallization temperature of the metal could be raised considerably. In order to check this theory, experiments have been made on copper wire. The wire was drawn from 1/4-in. rod to 22 B & S gage and then sample lots were annealed at 400 and 220° C., respectively. The wire annealed at 400° C. gave an elongation of 34 per cent., whereas that annealed at 220° C. gave only 23 per cent. These wires were then drawn by identical practice to 34 B & S gage and the elongation determined after an anneal of 3 min. in an oil bath held at various temperatures. As summarized in a re- cent symposium of the Electrochemical Society on "Mechanical Properties of Inter metallic Compound", most of the experimental evidence regarding the mechanical behavior of intermetallic compounds centers about the effect of temperature on the hardness and ductility of polycrystalline specimens. The available data reveal that the plastic behavior of intermetallic compounds might be rationalized in terms of the usual dislocation mechanisms appropriate to a solid solutions providing the additional complexities arising from crystal structure, long-range ordering, short-range ordering, and defect lattices are taken into consideration. It is apparent, however, in terms of the history on a solid solutions, that a complete detailed mechanistic rationalization of dislocation processes may not be possible until the deformation processes are studied in single crystals of intermetallic compounds. The present paper contains a preliminary report on the plastic behavior of single crystals of the hexagonal Ag-A1 intermetallic phase over a wide range of temperatures. The results confirm the thesis that single crystal data provide a most effective method of identifying operative dislocation mechanisms in intermetallic compounds. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Several factors prompted the selection of the hexagonal Ag-A1 intermetallic phase for this preliminar investigation on the plastic properties of single crystals of intermetallic compounds: 1) This phase has a wide solubility range5 which would permit future investigations on the effect of composition and axial ratios on slip mechanisms. 2) Although it undoubtedly exhibits short-range ordering (or clustering) this intermetallic phase is free from complexities arising from long-range ordering.6 3) Since the atomic radii of aluminum and silver are practically identical, the possible complications due to Cottrell locking are minimized. 4)Whereas the dislocations on the basal planes are expected to dissociate into Shockley partials and are thus susceptible to Suzuki locking, those on the prismatic planes probably remain complete. 5) The axial ratio, being 1.61, is almost ideal, suggesting that short-range ordering may be almost spherically symmetrical. The present investigation was conducted exclusively with the hexagonal Ag-A1 alloy containing 33 at. pct Al. Preliminary investigations revealed that this alloy undergoes basal slip by the (0001)

The rocks which cover the east flank of the South Mountain are chloritic schists typical in character. A specimen of this rock from near the Bechtel shaft, Hamilton Ban Township, Adams County, Pa., was selected and analyzed in my laboratory by Mr. C. As one penetrates the range by moving westvard, these schists are replaced either by epidotie quartz or by orthofelsite. In the former case, a belt of copper-bearing rock is traversed, but not in the latter case. Inasmuch as this junction of the chloritic schists on the southeast and orthofelsite on the northwest, separated by the epidotic quartz, is several times repeated, we find two or three copper belts arranged in general parallelism to the axis of the chain, because the copper horizon is generally at this junction. Thus, in going west from Fairfield, after entering the low spurs on the South Mountain, one is fairly within the chlorite measures. At the " Virginia Mills " a chlorite schist comes in with a dip of S. 1.5 E.-74 Half a mile up Middle Creek, large numbers of fragments of chlorite schist, decoruposed epidotic matter, and quartz are encountered. The former rock, where in place, dips E. 40" S.-57o. About 4000 feet west of the intersection of this road with the so-called Tape-Worm Railroad, near the house of one Singly, large masses of chloritie schist are found loose on the road. A hundred yards farther west, near a triangle in the road, the latter is less in quantity and much epidotic quartz appears, after which a very large display of orthofelsite succeeds on the left bank of Middle Creek. All these last-mentioned rocks, however, are in fragments. Crossing the stream again a few hundred yards farther On, the chlorite fragments at first preponderate, and then large numbers of both rocks

ThE basic equations describing continuous zone-melting via the zone-void method were reported by Pfann. Using these equations, a theoretical study was undertaken in this laboratory on the effect of the variation of the significant parameters of the zone-void system. These parameters are the zone length, 1, the heater length, h, and the effective distribution coefficient, k. The object of this study was to determine the effect of these parameters on and (where a = Cp/Cf and ß = Cw/Cf, Cp, C,, and Cf being, respectively, the solute concentration in product, waste, and feed) so that, in future application of this technique to the ultrapurification of materials, the effect of 1 and h would be predictable regardless of the value of k. The basic assumptions made by pfannl were, for the purposes of this study, assumed to hold. For k < 1, the steady-state solute distribution in the stripping section and the shift in this distribution brought about by passage of a void is shown in Fig. 7 of Ref. 1. In this section the definition of k and ß precludes the possibility of ß assuming values less than unity when k < 1. In the course of this investigation it was found that computations based on Pfann&apos;s equations gave values of ß less than unity in the region 1 > k > l/h for almost all values of Ls, where Further computations showed that 6 assumes negative values when k > 1 for many values of L,, 1, and h. THE copper-bearing sulphide ores from the mines in Butte, Mont., which are for the most part concentrated at the Boston & Montana duction Works in Great Falls and at the Washoe Reduction Works in Anaconda, contain the following minerals of economic value: Chalcocite, Cu2S; enargite, Cu3AsS4; cupriferous pyrite; bornite, Cu3FeS3; covellite, CUS; tetrahedrite, 4 CuS2Sb2S3; and tennantite, Cu8AsS7;. All of the ores carry a high percentage of pyrite. Many of the above sulphides are argentiferous and also carry from 10 to 20 cts. per ton in gold. The gangue is quartz and highly altered granite, with sphalerite and galena and more rarely barite and hubnerite as accessory minerals. An average chemical analysis of the second-class ore concentrated at Great Falls and Anaconda would be as follows: Copper 3.2 to 3.4 per cent. Silver 2. 3 to 3.0 oz. per ton. Gold 0.0-1 to 0.15 oz. per ton. Si02.. 55 to 60 per cent. FeO 12 to 15 per cent.. Sulphur 12 to 1.5 per cent. Al2O3, S to 10 per cent. CaO 0.5 to 0.8 percent. As203, 0.5 to 0.6 percent. Lead 0.2 to 0.3 percent. Before describing the Great Falls flow sleet as installed, at Anaconda, a brief history of the Great Falls concentrator will be given, including a description of the various concentrating machines and systems which have been tested in the search for a flow sheet which would give a higher recovery of copper.

Tensile data indicate that over the range of strain rates 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1 and in the temperature range 298° to 743°K the flow stress at a given temperature may be expressed as: C0 = Cem where m changes abruptly at a critical strain rate of 10-2 sec-1. The Zener-Hollomon parameter was tested and found to be invalid except at temperatures exceeding 700° K. Values of AH calculated for temperatures above 700°K ranged from 30 to 47.5 kcal per g-mole. ThE flow characteristics of aluminum and aluminum alloys as a function of temperature and strain rate have been of interest to various experimenters for many years. Trozera et al.1 determined tensile flow curves for pure aluminum and concluded that the combined effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress could be related using the Zener-Hollomon parameter. More recently, Hockett2 proposed a relationship between compressive flow stress, temperature, and true strain rate which could be represented by a surface. Holt et al.3 studied strain rate effects on flow stress in a number of aluminum alloys at room temperature. It was determined that there is a critical strain rate above which a strain rate effect is observed. It was also reported that the strain rate sensitivity was significant in aluminum alloys in the "0" condition only. In a recent review paper McQueen4 has considered a number of mathematical expressions which have been used to describe the relationship between stress, strain rate, and temperature. These expressions have been applied to the flow characteristics of a number of different metals and alloys including aluminum. In the present work the strain rate sensitivity of 7075-0 aluminum was determined in the temperature range of 298° to 743°K. The tensile flow stress at 0.2 pct offset was obtained over a nominal strain rate range of 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1. EXPERIMENTAL Threaded tensile specimens were cut from a single heat of 7075-T6 aluminum. The composition of this heat is given in Table I. The test bars had a gage section 1.5 in. long by 0.250 in. diam and conformed to ASTM specification E-8-57T. After machining, the bars were annealed at 413° ± 10°C for 2 hr. They were then cooled to 260°C in 3 hr, and finally air cooled to room temperature. This treatment is commonly used to produce the "0" condition. Load-time curves at constant crosshead speeds were obtained at various temperatures using an Instron testing machine. Crosshead speeds ranged from 0.002 to 40 in. per min. A three-zone resistance tube furnace was used for the elevated-temperature tests. Temperatures were measured at three points along the gage length by means of suitably placed thermocouples. Each tensile bar was held at temperature for 30 min prior to testing and the maximum temperature variation along the gage length was kept below 1°C. In all, 275 samples were tested and each data point plotted is an average of at least two tests. In many cases the point represents up to six tests. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Values of the flow stress at 0.2 pct offset at six different temperatures are plotted vs strain rate on log-log coordinates in Fig. 1. A STURDY and consistent expansion of the metal industry occurred in 1947 exemplified by an increase of approximately 30 per cent in steel consumption over 1946. For this major reason, ferroalloy metals have seen their most useful and important peace-time year. The current domestic rate of consumption of high-grade ferroalloy ores, together with added consumption of new foreign producers as well as for eign nationals&apos; restrictions on high-grade exports, makes very evident the increasing difficulties of obtaining sufficient high-grade ores. This accentuates the need for new and less expensive methods of production of ferro-alloy metals of higher purity from lower-grade domestic resources. As an important factor in preparedness, procurement of these high-grade, -critical ferroalloy minerals and metals for our nation&apos;s stock piles is a most important task. Also, this stock-piling can be the means of supplying incentive for the industrial development of the new metallurgical processes and plants necessary for the recovery of ferroalloy metals from our domestic low-grade deposits.

Six examples of the peritectoid transformation were selected from the literature and studied by the method of isothermal transformation. The kinetics and mechanisms of five of the examples are presented as TTT diagrams and photomicrographs. The exist-enc- of a peritectoid in the sixth case is doubtful. ALTHOUGH the peritectoid transformation per se has been known for many years, no precise published data exist concerning the kinetics or mechanisms involved in transformations of this type, except for the brief treatment by Rhines, et al. 1,10 Bearing in mind the fact that investigations of recent years are uncovering more and more peritectoids and suspected peritectoids, a thorough study of the well-established peritectoids appeared to be in order. It was for this reason that a study of the kinetics and morphological mechanisms of six binary peritectoids was undertaken. The six peritectoids selected from the literature for study were those reported at 7.02 wt pct Al-Ag, 26.0 wt pct Sb-Cu, 30.5 wt pct Sb-Cu, 32.3 wt pct Sn-Cu, 8.35 wt pct Si-Cu, and 21.2 wt pct Al-Cu. These selections were based on availability and purity of components, ease of preparation and heat-treatment, and estimated reliability of the available equilibrium diagrams in the regions of interest. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation were induction melted in electrode-grade graphite and chill-cast in cast-iron split molds. In all cases, the alloys were so brittle that they could easily be broken into samples weighing 1 or 2 g. Chemical analyses showed that the alloys used were close to the respective peritectoid compositions reported in the literature and that the impurity levels were low in all cases. Metallographic examination showed uniform distributions of phases in all samples, indicating uniformity of composition in the samples studied. Isothermal transformation studies were carried out in fused-salt media, using the familiar inter-rupted-quench method. Uniformity of temperature in the salt baths was maintained by continuous stirring with a stainless-steel agitator. On the basis of actual observations of the temperature fluctuations, the estimated temperature control was + 10C for the Ag-Al and Cu-Sb alloys and ±30C for the Cu-Sn, Cu-Si, and Cu-Al alloys. The accuracy of all temperature measurements was estimated to be ±1°C. It was found necessary to mount metallographic specimens of the Ag-Al alloy in cold-curing methyl methacrylate, since the temperatures encountered in mounting in bakelite or lucite caused an appreciable degree of transformation to the ß phase. For the other alloys, wood-flour-filled bakelite mounts were used to avoid extraneous X-ray diffraction lines during the later examination of the metallographic specimens on a Norelco Geiger-counter d if f r ac tomete r. In the X-ray diffraction procedure, agreement between the published diffraction patterns and those obtained in this study was good. This was particularly important for phase identification, since the literature contained little in the way of micrograph description in some cases. Etching of the silver-aluminum alloy for metallographic examination was done by swabbing with either of the following reagents: 1) 10 g CrO3, 1 g (NH4), SO2, 0.5 g NH4NO3, 100 ml H2O, or 2) 10 ml NH4OH, 1 ml 20 pct KOH, 4 ml 3 pct H2O2, 5 ml H2O. The other alloys were etched with the usual bichromate etchant: 2 g K2Cr2O7, 1.5 g NaC1, 8 ml conc. H2SO4, 100 ml H20 (swabbed vigorously). EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) The Ag-Al peritectoid at 7.02 wt pct Al— The phase equilibrium involved in this peritectoid is shown in Fig. I.2 The phase boundaries in the vicinity of the peritectoid were most comprehensively established by Hume-Rothery, et al,3 who placed the equilibrium temperature at 448 °C and the equilibrium compositions of the a ß&apos; and y phases at 6.11, 7.02, and 7.24 wt pct Al, respective The alloy used in this study analyzed4 6.95 wt pct A making it slightly hypoperitectoid according to the accepted equilibrium diagram. "HEREDITY"&apos; in cast iron has been a subject of much discussion. Numerous experimenters have found that the properties of gray iron may vary greatly without corresponding variations in composition or thermal treatment. The main structural difference in such cases is in the size and distribution of the graphite flakes and the explanations given usually attribute this difference to some chemical element not shown by ordinary analysis or to some physical factor, such as inclusions in the melt. It cannot be said that any of these theories is completely satisfactory. Much remains to be learned about cast iron and for this reason a study of the material was undertaken as a part of the program of fundamental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. A review of the literature indicated that very little systematic work had been done on the mecha-nism of freezing in cast iron. The experiments described below are largely concerned with that problem.

THE present work was carried out as part of a general program to study the magnitude and concentration dependence of exothermic heats of solution of various metals in liquid tin. Thermodynamic data for the Te-Sn system are very limited, particularly for dilute alloys. Indeed, apart from the prior heat of solution determinations of Pool,1 the only other published values are those of McAteer and seltz2 who carried out electromotive force measurements on solid alloys of compositions from 75 to 95 at. pct Te at temperatures between 543° and 668° K, of Colin and Dro-wart3 who made mass-spectrometric studies of the vapor in equilibrium with solid SnTe, and of Robinson and Bever4 who determined the heat of formation of SnTe by solution calorimetry. The present work thus provides further thermodynamic information for this system, specifically in a temperature range where the solubility of tellurium is very limited. The liquid metal solution calorimeter used in this investigation has been described previously.&apos; No further discussion of its design or operation will therefore be given here. For each series of measurements a tin bath consisting of approximately 70 g of 99.99 pct pure Sn was carefully weighed out and inserted in the calorimeter which was maintained at the desired temperature to within ± 1/4°c. Tellurium, of 99.999 pct purity, was supplied by Atomergic Chemetals Co., a division of Gallard-Schlesinger Chemical Manufacturing Corp. Approximately 0.0006 to 0.001 g-atom specimens of tellurium were used for each experimental run and these were added to the calorimeter from a temperature of 273" K. Heat of solution values were calculated by analysis of a strip-chart recorder plot of the heat effect accompanying the solution of each sample in the tin bath. The heat capacity of the latter was determined at regular intervals during a series of tellurium drops by using pure tin or tungsten calibration samples, the heat contents of which were obtained from the standard compilation of Hultgren et al5 The composition of the bath was calculated after each drop from a knowledge of the weights of tin and tellurium added. Values of the heat of solution of tellurium at 725" and 775° K are listed in Table I together with the corresponding tellurium contents of the alloys. The data are also plotted as a function of tellurium concentration in Fig. 1, which includes the equivalent data obtained by pool&apos; at 750° K. It can be seen that the heat of solution remains

THE COAL DIVISION started its share of the annual meeting Monday morning with a study of coal classi fication. A. C. Fieldner was in the chair. The report of the tellers of the ballot for division chairman, stating that Thomas G. Fear had been elected to that office, was read by M. D. Cooper. Mr. Fear acknowledged the honor in a few words. In reviewing the history of the Coal Classification Committee the chairman pointed out that this was its third symposium, the last previous one having been held at the 1930 Annual Meeting. Throughout its work the com¬mittee has had the active cooperation of the Canadian workers who are interested in the subject which should result in a uniform scheme of classification in Canada and the United States. F. E. Lathe, of the National Research Council, Ottawa, abstracted the first two papers of the session entitled "Determination of the Alkali-Soluble Ulmins in Coal," by Edgar Stansfield and K. C. Gilbart, and "Moisture Determination for Coal Classification," by the same authors. The third paper "Condition of Water in Coals of Various Ranks"&apos; was presented by its author, A. W. Gauger. Written discussions of these papers were presented by H. C. Porter and Gilbert H. Cady. In the oral discussion which followed, W. T. Thom, Jr., brought out the advisability of considering age as a factor in classification. Mr. Fieldner favored retaining bed moisture as a partial classification basis, stating that a review of many coal analyses revealed a remarkable consistency in this item in samples from a given mine particularly where the moisture content was not high. Mr. Porter pointed out that the structure and porosity of coal often have much to do with its moisture content and that these vary in different parts of a seam, particularly in anthracite. Mr. Gauger expressed doubt as to whether the Stansfield method gives the true moisture content of coal, which is needed for classification purposes.

The oxidation characteristics of hafnium and zirconiunr diboride were measured between 1200 and 2200&apos;K by a thermal- conductivity method which continuously ttzeasures the rate of reaction of oxygen with the diboride and by a metallographic air oridation method zuhich provides a measure of the total arr7ount of bovide conuerted to oxide for a given time interval. The oxidized specimens obtained from the tl~eritaal-coi~ductitrity method were also examined by quantitatire metal-lographic procedares. The significant results obtained in this investigation reveal that metal-rich compositions of lzafi~iutil diboride proride the most oxidation-resistatzt material up to 2000°K; hafnium diboride is tmre oxidation- resistant titan zirconium diboride at all tempevatures examined; the morphology of the oxide formed on H/B2 and Llie temperature coefficient qi. the oxidation rate constants change at the temperature of ttze monoclinic to tetragonal phase transition] in HfO2; the oxidation of neither HfB2 nor ZrB2, results iN catastrophic Jazlure at lorc. oxygen pressures; and pvefevetztial gvaLti boundary oxidation was not obsevued for either HfBi or ZYB, A comprehensive study of the high-temperature characteristics of refractory transition-metal di-borides is currently in progress. This program has included investigation of the physical, thermal, and thermodynamic properties of TiB2, ZrB2, HfB2, NbB2, and TaB2. In addition, aspects of the synthesis and fabrication of such materials have been studied. In view of the diverse nature of this research, a number of other laboratories have actively participated and contributed specific capabilities for analysis and characterization of these materials. As a consequence, an extensive description of the relevant properties of these compounds has emerged which is central in evaluating their high-temperature (1200" to 2500°K) performance. To date, information on thermodynamic stability, specific heat, and vaporization characteristics,1 hot hardness and electrical resistivity,1, 3 therma1 expansion:&apos;4 and thermal conductivity 1, 5 has been presented. This information has been generated on materials of the highest purity (98.5 to 99.9 wt pct Me + B) and density currently available. Samples fabricated by zone melting6 and high-pressure hot pressing"3&apos;7 techniques have been used to generate suitable specimens for all of the aforementioned studies. dation characteristics of the most oxidation-resistant of these materials, hafnium and zirconium diboride, is presented and a description of the synthesis and the experimental procedures used to prepare and characterize specimens is given. The high-temperature range under consideration (1200" to 2200°K) and the known dependence of oxidation characteristics on sample chemistry, density, and oxidation conditions required a close coupling of the synthesis, fabrication, and evaluation procedures.8 This was accomplished by continual surveillance of chemical composition of starting materials before and after specimen fabrication and by evaluation of density, phase constitution, and microstructural features prior to and after oxidation exposure. I) PROCUREMENT AND CHARACTERIZATION OF STARTING MATERIALS In view of the current state of the art in fabricating refractory boride materials, the methods used in preparing samples for the present study are given in detail as follows: starting materials were purchased in high-purity powder form and fabricated by high-pressure hot pressing into 0.40 by 1.00 in. bars from which oxidation specimens were obtained. The hafnium diboride used in this study was purchased from Wah Chang Corp.; the zirconium diboride from U.S. Borax and Chemical Co. These powders were routinely characterized by quantitative chemical analyses for metal, boron, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and iron, by qualitative emission-spectrographic analysis for trace impurities, by X-ray procedures for extraneous phase identification, and by powder densitometry for comparison with X-ray (theoretical) density. Hafnium and zirconium metal and elemental boron were also purchased as high-purity powders and characterized for impurities by emission-spectrographic analyses. The hafnium diboride was procured in three shipments which were designated as HfBl.g7(1), HfB1.88(2A), and HfB2.12(2). The indicated stoichiometry is based on the atomic ratio of total boron to total hafnium; the number in parentheses identifies the shipment number. Shipment 1 was 5 1b, shipment 2A, 1 1b, and shipment 2, 8 1b. The zirconium diboride was procured as a 20-1b shipment and designated as ZrB1.89(1). A small quantity of purified zirconium diboride was also supplied and designated ZrB1, 9(P). The averaged results for chemical analyses which were generally performed according to the procedures set forth in the compilation by KrieGe9 are presented in Table I. Qualitative spectrographic analyses indicated that Ca, Cr, Ti, Si, Zr (in H~B~), and A1 were present at levels between 0.01 and 0.10 wt pct. Other metallic elements were found to be less than 0.01 wt pct. They were noted, not with a view to investigating the point discussed by Mr. Clark, but in course of a test on a working scale to determine the com parative saving from a given free-milling ore on copper and silvered plates respectively. In every case the bullion assayed was the result of a separate clean-up on a considerable quantity of ore. The ore varied widely in grade and in other respects, but the runs bracketed in the table were made at the same time, in adjoining batteries, and on similar types of ore. In a * Result modified by the addition to the bullion-shipment of a little impure bullion left over from previous clean-ups.. On these occasions, the strips of copper were removed from the tables, and: their lower surfaces were cleaned. Hence the higher yield reported.

As in other fields of Extractive Metallurgy, Hydrometallurgy is preoccupied with separation processes and with oxidation-reduction processes. The physical chemistry of each type of process can be described in terms of thermodynamic equilibria and in terms of reaction kinetics. Reaction kinetics are much more important at the low temperatures limiting hydrometallurgical processes than in com- parable pyrometallurgical operations and the number of cases in which the kinetics can be described by simple liquid-phase mass-transfer models are sharply limited. It is convenient to subdivide the applicable rate phenomena into processes in which (a) interface reactions control the rate,(b) mass transfer processes control the rate, (c) solid state process affect the rate, (d) thermodynamically predicted phase changes or molecular reactions fail to take place, (d) metastable substances or supersaturated phases persist, and (elchomogeneous reactions in solution affect the chemistry and the kinetics. Examples are drawn from the unit steps of leaching, cementation, hydrogen reduction, and electrowinning.
