MEASURED in terms of ore tonnage, the New Quebec and Labrador iron ore fields promise to rank with the greatest iron ore districts of the world. Over 400 million tons of high-grade ore for direct shipping have been discovered to date. Much greater amounts of lower-grade beneficiating ores are indicated by outcrops. Many hundreds of square miles of iron formation await testing. By 1954 iron ore will begin to move towards American blast furnaces, and shortly thereafter the annual rate of production is expected to reach 10 . million tons. To bring this vast project into being over $200,000,000 will have been spent for exploration and development, mining equipment, hydro plants, townsites, the building and the equipping of . a 360-mile railroad, and the construction of docks and ore-handling facilities. The most important iron ore deposits are located over 300 miles from tide water, see frontispiece and also Fig. 1. The frontispiece shows principal sources of iron ores and manganiferous iron ores for the U. S. and Canadian steel industry, and the major smelting districts are shaded on the map. No navi- gable rivers lead into the interior. When work was . commenced on this project there were no roads, no railroads, no communication ,system, no inhabitants, and no adequate maps either topographical or geological. The geological field season was limited to approximately 100 days per season. The obstacles facing this enterprise were many and varied. FUEL-OIL was first substituted for coal at these works in September, 1888. It was first applied in the converting-department to the battery of boilers, consisting of 14 tubular boilers, 16 feet in length by 5 feet in diameter. To operate these boilers with coal for 24 hours required 14 strikers, 3 ash-wheelers, 6 men unloading coal, and 2 water-tenders, making a total of 25 men. With fuel-oil the same boilers require for the same period 2 water-tenders and 4 men to attend to the burners, making a total of 6 men. This gives a saving of 19 men, which, at an average of $2 per day each, amounts to $38 per day. Comparing the consumption of oil with that of coal, we find that for the week ending January 5, 1889, with an ingot output of 6403 tons, 2731 barrels of fuel-oil were used as against a necessary consumption of coal for the same work of 848 tons, showing 3.22 barrels of fuel-oil to be equivalent to one ton of Indiana block-coal. Figuring oil at 60 cents per barrel, and coal at $2.15 per ton, we have as the cost of oil $1.93, as against $2.15 for its equivalent in coal. In December, 1888, the rail-mill battery of 26 boilers, of the same dimensions as those in the converting-department, was equipped for fuel-oil. For the week ending January 5, 1889, with a rail out-put of 5208 tons, 5987 barrels of oil were consumed, as against a necessary consumption of coal, to do the same work, of 1805 tons, showing 3.31 barrels of fuel-oil to be equivalent to one ton of Indiana block-coal, which at the costs named above would show $1.98 worth of fuel-oil to he equal to $2.15 worth of coal. The labor required to operate the rail-mill boilers for 24 hours, with coal as fuel,is: 26 stokers, 4 water-tenders, 6 ash-wheelers, 12 men unloading coal; total, 48 men. With oil as fuel, the same work requires 4 water-tenders and 6 men to attend to the burners; total, 10 men; a saving over coal of 38 men in 24 hours, which, at an average price of $2 per day, would be $76 per day. The oxidation kinetics of spherical pellets of zinc sulfide made from Santander concentrates were studied using a thermogravimetric technique. The experiments covered a temperature range-. of 740" to 102O°C, 0-N mixtures varying from 20 to LOO pct O2, and pellet diameters between 0.4 and 1.6 cm. Mathematical models were formulated to Predict the reaction rate on the assumption that a single transport or interface reaction step was rate -controlling. Analysis of the data indicated that the process of oxidation was predominantly controlled by transport through the zinc oxide reaction-Product layer. ROASTING processes, which are reactions between solids and gases, are very important because they are employed in the production of a number of basic metals. These processes are highly complicated, and one needs to consider the transport phenomena of heat and mass between the solids and gases in addition to the kinetics of various chemical reactions involved. Because of such complications there is a lack of knowledge concerning the rate-limiting factors, which may strongly depend on temperature, particle size, gas composition, and solid structure. The oxidation of zinc sulfide, which is of commercial importance in zinc production, falls into this class of reactions. The major goal of this work was to elucidate the roles played by different process variables, such as reaction temperature, gas composition, pellet size, and pellet porosity, on the kinetics of oxidation of single pellets of zinc sulfide. Roasting of zinc sulfide single particles has been a subject of both experimental and theoretical investigations.&apos;-&apos; The reaction is exothermic and may be considered to be irreversible. Such a reaction has been found to proceed in a topochemical manner. In other words, as the reaction proceeds, a progressively thicker outer shell of zinc oxide is formed, while the inner core of unreacted sulfide decreases. It has been found experimentally, both in the present work and in the previous investigations,1-9 that the particle retains its original dimensions and the process requires transport of gaseous oxygen across the porous product layer for continued reaction. The reaction may be represented by ZnS(s) + 3/2 O2(g) = ZnO(s) + SO2(g) [1] The solid product considered here is only zinc oxide, since the diffraction patterns of zinc sulfide pellets oxidized partially at &apos;798" and 960°C showed K. This depicts a partially oxidized sphere of zinc sulfide in a gas stream surrounded by a laminar film of gas. The spherical sample of zinc sulfide of unchanging external radius r0 is suspended in a flowing gas stream of total pressure PT and composition specified by the partial pressures of the individual components. Partial pressures of the gaseous species in the bulk gas phase, at the exterior surface of the pellet, at the ZnS/ZnO interface, and at equilibrium for Reaction [I] are identified by the superscripts b, o, i, and eq, respectively. Transfer of reactant gas (oxygen) from the bulk gas stream across the gas boundary layer to the exterior surface of the pellet and the reverse transfer of the product gas (sulfur dioxide). Step 2. Diffusion and bulk flow of oxygen from the pellet surface through the product shell (ZnO) onto the ZnS/ZnO interface and the reverse transfer of sulfur dioxide. Step 3. This chapter deals with the systems of laws by which governments regulate the exploration for and production of the minerals within their jurisdictions. It is a summary, restricted by necessary space limitations, of material assembled by the author for a forthcoming publication of the United States Bureau of Mines, "Summary of Mining and Petroleum Laws of the World." (Information Circular, 1959.) The present study is organized in three parts, dealing with (1) the historical background of these legal systems, (2) laws of the United States, and (3) laws of other countries of the world. The reader&apos;s attention is invited to the acknowledgments at the end of the chapter, which inadequately express the appreciation due those who have assisted in the collection of this material. Part I. Historical Development of Major Western Systems of Land Tenancy with Respect to the Ownership and Control of Minerals The use of metals in primitive societies was largely confined to the manufacture of weapons for self-preservation. The ruler&apos;s control over copper, then brass, then iron, was essential to maintenance of his own ascendancy at home and his group&apos;s position against neighbors who had access to similar metals. Ancient societies were thus characterized by the ruling group&apos;s ownership of minerals and metals. The Egyptian civilization, which emerged in the fourth millenium B.C. upon the agricultural subjugation of the lower valley of the Nile, was responsible for extensive development of the upper valley as a source of mineral wealth. The production of gold during the height of that civilization has been estimated at $30,000,000 per year, thus equaling the early placers of California and Australia. The mines of Egypt were the property of the Pharaohs and were controlled at their direction. Greek mining developed a different scheme of land tenancy which more closely resembled modem concepts. THE problem of increasing output and decreasing percentage of rejections is a vital one in the manufacture of steel of any kind. The making of basic open-hearth steel for use in rolled steel wheels, tires for locomotive and car wheels, and forgings of various kinds, is a highly specialized industry. The increase in weight of railway rolling stock of all kinds, and the high speed that the public demands of transportation facilities, make it imperative that steel for use in this class of material shall be of the highest quality obtainable. During the past few years it has been the writer&apos;s good fortune to have opportunity-to study the defects in basic open-hearth steel, and also the results obtained by various changes in open-hearth practice, on such defects. The opportunity for study and the details available are rarely found in the manufacture of steel of any kind. It seems reasonable to assume that many of the results determined here can be applied to the production of steel of other types with a decided improvement in quality, a decrease in the percentage of rejections and an increase in output. All of the material described is basic open-hearth steel with the following range of analysis: carbon, 0.50 to 0.85 per cent.; phosphorus and sulfur, 0.04 coax.; silicon, 0.15 to 0.35; manganese, 0.50 to 0.75. All of this material is bottom-cast, therefore tapping and pouring temperatures are higher than in top-cast production. Ingots used in this type of work are of standard length with varying diameters. The ingot is known as duodecagonal, or twelve-sided. The standard body length is 88 in. and the hot top length, 14 in. Fig. 1 shows a typical ingot of this type. The diameter varies from 13 to 30 in. Ingots for special forgings, which cannot be made in molds of standard size, are made in molds of various sizes and designs. These ingots are sliced cold, into blocks of various lengths, depending upon the weight of the forging to be made. Fig. 2 shows the ingot-after coming from the slicing lathe. Just sufficient metal remains between blocks to hold the ingot in one piece while it is being removed from the lathe; then steel wedges are inserted between the blocks and the blocks are broken apart. The mechanism most consistent with available information on atmospheric trace element emissions involves the volatilization of a significant fraction of many trace elements during coal combustion, with subsequent condensation on fly ash as the combustion gases cool. The larger surface-td-volume ratio of the smaller particles leads to an enrichment of the volatile trace elements. From an environmental viewpoint, the submicron size particles are of greatest concern. These particles show the highest concentrations of trace elements, are least efficiently collected by pollution control devices, have high atmospheric mobilities, and are deposited preferentially in the pulmonary and bronchial regions of the respiratory system. The mechanisms for trace element enrichment and formation of submicron particles will be described.

THE following notes represent significant excerpts from a mass of records of experimental work done in the ore-dressing laboratory at the Columbia School of Mines during the years 1926 to 1928-inclusive. CLASSIFICATION OF EXPERIMENTAL WORK The experiments performed may be grouped for purposes of description under the following general -headings: I. Collecting agents. a. A method for quantifying collecting effect. b. Coating with undissolved collecting agents (oils) c. Action of dissolved collecting agents. II. Frothing agents. a. A method for quantifying frothing effect. b. Relation between frothing effect and chemical composition. III. Inorganic reagents. a. Methods of studying the effects of these reagents. b. Effect on slime dispersion. c. Effect on sulfides. SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINS OF PRESENT-DAY FLOTATION PRACTICE The first practicable, foolproof method of froth flotation was described in U. S. patent 835120, issued in 1906 to Sulman, Picard and Ballot, and in the equivalent patents in other countries. A number of less simple methods of producing the same result had been described previously in patent publications and otherwise.1 The reagents specified in all of these early patents were "oils" and, in addition, some inorganic substance, usually an acid. The quantities of reagents recommended and added were enormous when&apos; compared with those used today.

THE gravity magnitudes obtained by means of observations with the Eötvös balance in the field are necessarily resultant or total effects due to all abnormalities of mass distribution, including even the effects due to the ellipticity and rotational motion of the whole earth. Since the object of the survey is to isolate the effects which arise solely from some particular subterranean feature, and to deduce therefrom the configuration and extent of this feature, the first step is to eliminate from the observed effects all those due to "disturbing" (i. e., unwanted) features, whether above or below the surface of the ground. The disturbing features have different characteristics, according to their situation relative to the center of the balance and to the horizontal plane through the foot of the balance, or station point; this diversity was recognized by Eötvös, who divided the total effects into so-called Normal, Terrain, Topographical, Cartographical and Subterranean effects. This classification has been adhered to by most subsequent investigators, but the writer prefers to employ the term "three-dimensional," which really indicates the essential character of the class of effect known as "Subterranean," at any rate from the standpoint of the computer of effects. Before disturbing effects can be eliminated, the features must be measured up or surveyed, whether by topographical, mining, or boring methods, and then the effects of each feature calculated and subtracted from-the total observed effects. After this the problem of interpreting the residual effects will itself necessitate the computation of the assumed feature, or even a series of trial features.

The cement industry is on the horns of an economic dilemma. Within the last ten years, its over- capacity in the United States has varied from 139- 127% of demand (Fig. 1). The most direct effect of this is seen in cement prices, which reached a peak in 1960, retreated steadily through 1966 and only recently climbed back to the 1960 level again. With prices in a slump and production costs estimated to be up almost 30%, there has been a steady drain on cement profits. Since 1960, labor costs have increased 86% while fuel costs have risen 18%. Meanwhile, customer service costs have also soared owing to the competition for cement customers and the wider variety of available cement products. This search for sales advantage has in turn led to a higher Blaine number, which means more grinding and hence bigger mills, more power, and, once again, higher costs. THE Birmingham district, Alabama, is distinctive in the proximity to one another of its deposits of iron ore, coal and flux. These three basic requisites for the making of iron and steel are found within a radius of 10 miles. Both dolomite and limestone are produced, the former for blast-furnace flux and the latter for basic open-hearth operations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, operates a limestone mine at Muscoda, near Bessemer, 12 miles southwest of Birmingham, served by its own railroad transportation system. The mine has a capacity of 130 tons per hour. Average analyses of a recent month&apos;s production are as follows: Fe2O3 Si02 A12O3 CAC03 MGCO Lump, per cent 0.51 0.22 98.63 0.14 Crushed and washed, percent 0.70 0.26 98.36 0.18 Lump stone, 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 in., is used in open-hearth operations at Fairfield Steel Works. Fine crushed and washed stone, 1 ¼ to 0.063 in., is calcined at the, lime-burning plant and used for lime charges at the Ensley open hearths.

MANY different methods are used for transporting coal from the working face to the tipple. The common methods are animal haulage, locomotive haulage, conveyor systems, and combinations of these three, supplemented, at times, by the miner pushing his own car. Haulage may also be classified into gathering and main line. Gathering haulage is the collecting of loaded cars to a point whence they are hauled to the tipple. In this there is perhaps more lost-time than on the main line because there are .more units in the operation to be synchronized. Also, conditions on the gathering haul- age, such as bad track, poor timbering, insufficient motive power, etc., cause delays; usually these are corrected on the main-line haulage.

[The Construction Materials section contains the following Chapters: Aggregates Cement and Cement Raw Materials Crushed Stone Dimension and Cut Stone Lightweight Aggregates Gypsum and Anhydrite Sand and Gravel Insulating Materials-Thermal and Sound Slag Roofing Granules] Mineral aggregates are those natural and manufactured industrial mineral and rock materials that provide bulk and strength in portland cement concrete, bituminous concrete mixes, and plaster or stucco surfaces. They may also provide special characteristics such as thermal and acoustical insulation, weight, surface textures, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. Most aggregates are relatively inexpensive materials, but despite their low unit value, the tonnages consumed each year in the United States and throughout the" world make mineral aggregates by far the leading industrial mineral and rock materials both in terms of volume (tonnage) produced and value consumed. The major use of mineral aggregates is in concrete. The low cost, high bulk aggregates tend to keep concrete construction costs at levels competitive with other building materials. Other major uses of aggregates include highway and railroad base or ballast materials, graded fill, and various industrial uses such as metallurgical and chemical fluxes and raw materials-these latter uses are often considered nonaggregate uses of mineral aggregate materials. The per-ton value of mineral aggregate materials at the production plant in 1980 and 1981 varied from $2 to $5 for most sand and gravel and crushed stone, $3 to $6 for air-cooled slag, $7 to $20 for expanded slag and expanded clay or shale aggregate, to as much as $165 to $320 for expanded perlite or vermiculite. The expanded lightweight aggregates have been dramatically affected by increasing fuel costs. It is ironic that the specialized aggregates used as insulating materials to conserve energy cost so much more to produce due to the high proportion of energy consumed in their production. The first four parts of "Construction Materials" deal with the utilization of four major mineral aggregate types: Crushed Stone, Lightweight Aggregates, Sand and Gravel, and Slag. While the focus will be on the use of these industrial minerals and rocks, there will also be some coverage of sources, mining and production, especially in those cases where they are not discussed in the Commodity section of this book.

Cinnabar was discovered in southwestern Arkansas on Little Missouri River in sec. 1, T.7S., R.26W., in April, 1930, and near Antoine Creek in sec. 28, T.6S., R.23W., some 15 miles farther east in May of the same year. It was not, however, until June, 1931, that cinnabar was identified as such in a specimen from the original discovery area sent to W. M. Weigell by Walter F. Hintze of Murfreesboro. Almost simultaneously2, in July, 1931, Moritz Norden of Hot Springs identified specimens from the Antoine Creek area as cinnabar. Immediate interest in the district followed the identification of cinnabar and by January, 1932, the district was known to extend as a mineralized belt about one mile wide trending east-northeast from sec. 13, T.7S., R.27W., in Howard County across central Pike County and into Clark County to sec. 19, T.6S., R.23W., thence extending southeast into sections 33 and 34 of the same township. Since then, cinnabar has been found in sec. 6, T.7S., R.22W., thus giving a total east-west length to the district of approximately 30 miles. Interest focused mainly on the two discovery areas, with the result that mining development has progressed most rapidly in those localities. In the Antoine Creek area the Arkansas Quicksilver Co. has done considerable exploration work and has retorted the high-grade ore so obtained. In the Little Missouri area the Southwestern Quicksilver Co. has had a 12-ton rotary furnace in more or less continuous operation since April, 1932, and has been the largest producer in the district. In March, 1934, the United States Geological Survey began a study of the Arkansas quicksilver district, which was made possible by an allotment of funds from the Public Works Administration. Until

Cinnabar was discovered in southwestern Arkansas on Little Missouri River in sec. 1, T.7S., R.26W., in April, 1930, and near Antoine Creek in sec. 28, T.6S., R.23W., some 15 miles farther east in May of the same year. It was not, however, until June, 1931, that cinnabar was identified as such in a specimen from the original discovery area sent to W. M. Weigell by Walter F. Hintze of Murfreesboro. Almost simultaneously2, in July, 1931, Moritz Norden of Hot Springs identified specimens from the Antoine Creek area as cinnabar. Immediate interest in the district followed the identification of cinnabar and by January, 1932, the district was known to extend as a mineralized belt about one mile wide trending east-northeast from sec. 13, T.7S., R.27W., in Howard County across central Pike County and into Clark County to sec. 19, T.6S., R.23W., thence extending southeast into sections 33 and 34 of the same township. Since then, cinnabar has been found in sec. 6, T.7S., R.22W., thus giving a total east-west length to the district of approximately 30 miles. Interest focused mainly on the two discovery areas, with the result that mining development has progressed most rapidly in those localities. In the Antoine Creek area the Arkansas Quicksilver Co. has done considerable exploration work and has retorted the high-grade ore so obtained. WHAT information do you have on precision investment casting? Please send me all available information on the removal of paraffin from oil wells and pipe lines. How can I find out how to remove magnesium oxide from lime? I want a good book on the pickling of steel. Can liquid oxygen be used as an explosive in a mine? Where can I get a bibliography on the plasticity of metals? These questions, selected from the scores of questions asked the Engineering Societies Library staff every day, indicate some of the diversity of the requests received. The samples chosen relate to interests of AIME members but the questions that come to the Library by mail, telephone, telegraph, and in person cover all fields of engineering, science, and technology. Some questions can be answered quickly; others require extensive searching. Those that can be answered in a few minutes or ten, twenty, or even thirty minutes are usually done without charge. For the more difficult questions a charge is made. In this way those requiring considerable service pay for it and the Library finds it possible to serve more persons.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, May, 1879, I made the first announcement in America of the results obtained by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy C. Gilchrist, ill their efforts to eliminate phosphorus in the manufacture of steel in the Bessemer converter and the open-hearth furnace.1 The first published statement in an American newspaper was a reprint of the first Thomas-Gilchrist paper, 2 which I sent to J. C. Bayles, at that time the editor. At the suggestion of many friends who were present at the Pittsburg meeting, and others who are cognizant of the beginnings of the process in the United States, and for the information of the younger generation of the iron and steel fraternity, I have thought it eminently proper that the history of the process in detail should be given where I made the first announcement and where the process has had its largest development. During my residence in England, from April, 1873, to February, 1879, and as a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1874, I was present at many of its meetings during those years. At nearly -every meeting the burden of discussion was the question of the use of pig-iron containing phosphorus in the. manufacture of steel by the Bessemer or the open-hearth process.
