The runout of dry blocky rock avalanches produced by planar rockslides affecting a limestone formation with clayey interbeds is analysed by means of distinct element modelling. Numerical analyses are validated by means of the back analysis of a historical rockslide occurred in the investigated area and physical aspects of the phenomenon evidenced by modelling are discussed. Over the last decade significant development and use has been made of a simulation model that describes the HCFeMn smelting operations in Assmang Ltd. This spreadsheet based, semi-empirical, predictive model is derived from data from the submerged arc furnaces at Assmang?s Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal smelter site. Departures from the empirical base case mass balance due to changes in the ores, reductant feeds and operating parameters are accounted for by use of fundamental relationships and heuristic type ratios which are applied in an iterative manner in the model. The model performs a sequential set of calculations to iteratively converge on a fully consistent mass and energy balance solution, which predicts Mn alloy and slag output masses and compositions for a given set of feeds. 440 MWh per operating day is used as the basis of energy input. The paper describes the key model components, assumptions made and calculation approach. Added to the mass and energy balance is a cost and revenue balance, which allows prediction of the economic performance for each simulation. Substantial use of the model has been made in simulating the performance of the current Assmang HCFeMn furnaces for both smelter investigations and future production planning. The model has also been a valuable tool in the strategic analysis of the use of future Mn ores and has formed the vital link between mine ore grades (metal and slag elements) and the expected alloy output, grade and profitability. Additionally, the model has been used in benchmarking exercises to predict other Mn smelting operations with remarkable accuracy. The paper highlights some aspects of the approaches taken in using the model to benchmark Assmang?s own furnace performance and cost competitiveness with other producers. For Assmang the development and application of this modelling technology has led to transformation in understanding of the Assmang HCFeMn furnace operations and increased awareness of the potential of its Mn ore bodies.

"The self-heating of sulphides can be a major hazard in mining operations and concentrate handling, particularly during transportation and associated storage. Self-heating results from the oxidation of sulphide minerals and can vary from being insignificant to highly reactive and potentially hazardous to both humans and infrastructure. It is essential that there be a reliable test methodology that can measure and categorize a given sulphide material as to its self-heating potential. By their nature, sulphide ores and concentrates are complex and variable mineral mixtures making it difficult to predict their self-heating behaviour a-priori based on mineralogy or with a simple “snapshot” test. Furthermore, self-heating behaviour will depend on the state of oxidation of the sulphides as well as time, temperature and humidity. A review of available testing apparatuses and protocols that can be used to assess self-heating potential is presented. Each of these methodologies was examined in relation to its ability to measure and reliably predict the latent self-heating hazard of a sulphide material. Several of the methods were tested and compared to illustrate their strengths and weakness. The results indicated that a number of the test protocols may produce false negative indications of self-heating potential, constituting an obvious concern to the industry.INTRODUCTION Sulphides as well as other materials (coal, wood chips, hay, powdered milk, to name a few) that are stockpiled in an air atmosphere may undergo oxidation reactions which can result in the evolution of heat (Beever, 1984) (Hudak, 2002) (Blanchard, 2007). If the rate of heat generated exceeds the rate of heat dissipation, the stockpile temperature will rise, potentially leading to “hot spots” in the most reactive areas, and possibly even fires. The heat generation rate, the “self-heating” rate, depends on many factors such as the type and composition of material, particle size, moisture content, oxygen availability, ambient temperature and humidity, and of prime importance, the extend of prior oxidation, or more specifically, the presence of oxidation products. The desire of operators that mine, process or transport sulphide-bearing materials with a potential for self-heating is to have an accepted and reliable method for evaluating and quantifying the potential hazard of their material. The challenges are how to best measure the self-heating properties of given samples, and based on results, predict the behaviour of the bulk material over time and in-situ. Generally, when evaluating a given material one derives the self-heating characteristics of that sample at the time and under the conditions of testing, which will be referred to as a “snapshot test”. If that material is invariable, i.e. it will not change its response over time, then it may be considered to be a “predictive test”. However, if as a result of continuing oxidation or other changes, the material becomes more or less reactive with time, then a “snapshot test” is unreliable with respect to predictive ability."

For the purposes of this discussion it is assumed that contributors should express the thoughts that arise from their personal experience. So wide is the range of mineral deposits, and so varied the methods employed in their discovery and development, that no two geologists are likely to have been impressed with the same applications of their science. The author's own personal experience has been, during recent years at least, very largely concerned with the broader aspects of the employment of scientific method and geological knowledge to the problems of exploration and exploitation, for the guidance of the general public and governmental authority rather than of mine executives and directors. The view-point thus reached is likely to differ in many respects from that of men who are much more intimately concerned with the mining problems of a single metal or a single mining field, and for this reason a statement may perhaps supplement those from others whose experience has been markedly different.It may well happen that, at some not distant date in the future, when systematic and comprehensive instruction in economic geology is embodied in the courses- prescribed for mining engineers during their years of training, the author's comments will be quitesuperfluous; but at the present time they appear to him to call for expression.The Need for Training of Mining Men in Economic Geology.Contact over a period of many years with mining men who have had different kinds of training and experience has been convincing that there is a general reluctance to acquire a full rational understanding of the geological factors involved in exploratory and developmental problems. A 4-legged jacket structure was installed by an Offshore Installation Contractor (OIC) in the Persian Gulf. In addition to four open-end pipe piles, six conductors were installed by OIC. During the installation of the piles and conductors, some cemented layers were encountered, which had not been accounted for in the foundation design performed by an independent well known offshore geotechnical site investigation contractor (OGSIC). Six months later, the Drilling Company (DC) hired by Client to execute the wells, reported that all of the six conductors were presenting anomalies, such as vertical misalignments up to 10o and/or collapse of the conductors tip and mid height. The DC faced with serious problem in drilling of the wells and in spite of several times milling the conductors and spending 40 days unpredicted extra time, some of the routes could not be opened and Client lost millions of dollars due to direct and indirect associated costs and expenses. This paper presents a complete overview of all engineering, construction and specially geotechnical investigations and shows that how an inaccuracy in interpretations of the results of an offshore geotechnical site investigation as the main reason in this case study can cause serious damages to whole project with unbelievable time and cost impacts some times up to millions of dollars.

Conventional processing of heavy mineral deposits containing radioactive rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime may cause industrial hygiene problems through atmospheric dust and contamination of product concentrates. An alternative procedure has been developed in which such minerals are removed from bulk heavy mineral concentrates by flotation with little loss of other economic minerals. With fine ores, recoveries of over 95 per cent have been achieved and with coarse ores over 80 per cent, in both cases at high grade. Several flotation regimes have proven effective. The potential for generation of radioactive dust or product contamination is subsequent processing is correspondingly reduced.

Sedimentary pyrites from Tasmania have Se contents that are high for it province showing no overall Se enrichment. Sulphides from Devonian granitic rocks, and related cassiterite-sulphide deposits, Sn-Wand PbZn-Ag fissure veins have similar and relatively low Se contents, and pyrites from Devonian gold-quartz veins have very low Se contents. The high concentrations of Se at Mount Lyell are consistent with enrichment in pyritic Cu deposits in volcanic rocks elsewhere, and the dispersion of Se is consistent with a surface volcanic origin for several of the orebodies. In contrast, sulphides from Cambrian volcanic rocks and associated granitic rocks, and from the Rosebery and Hercules pyritic PbZn deposits, also believed to be of volcanic origin, are impoverished in Se.In the Mount Bischoff cassiterite-sulphide deposits there is no relationship between Se content of sulphides and temperature of formation as indicated by fluid inclusion studies, and sulphides from Devonian ores with different temperatures of formation have similar Se contents.The Se content of Tasmanian sulphides appears to be an unsatisfactory discriminant of their genesis and temperature of formation but in volcanic terrains may be a useful pathfinder for Cu concentrations.

In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of the ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill grinding circuit has vast applications in the mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy, and research laboratories; however, this system has some challenges. The grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which the high interaction between loops, the variation of the system parameters with time, and time delay are some of the problems that pose a challenge. Since the controller parameters are determined offline in classic PID control, these gains are unchangeable and cannot overcome the mentioned challenges in this system. Hence, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller, which is a combination of fuzzy logic and a conventional PID controller, is proposed to control the grinding system, especially in the presence of model mismatch and disturbances. In addition, in order to solve the system challenges, a multivariable control approach based on an improved disturbance observer is proposed to suppress the effects of the disturbances. The most important feature of the algorithm proposed in this paper as the combination of fuzzy logic self-tuning PID and improved disturbance observer is its ability to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances, and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit. Simulation results in the cases of the set-point change in particle size and circulating load in the presence of model mismatch and external disturbances confirmed the controller performance compared to other controllers.

This is one of a series of pacers being published by the United States Bureau of Mines, describing mining and milling methods at crushed-stone plants throughout the United States. These pacers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total production cost might not be advisable in some instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called o this differentiation in order that there will be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations. This paper deals with the quarrying and crushing methods used at the Plainville plant of the New Haven Trap Rock Co., which produces annually between 275,000 and 300,000 tons of trap rock, Although pct the largest quarry operated by the company, it typifies the standard methods used by all the quarries in producing crushed stone and has one or two rather unique operating features. The cost of production at this plant is close to the average cost at all quarries of the company.

To determine whether reflectors could substitute for the trip lights referred to in the Federal Mine Safety Code, the Bureau of Mines studied trip safety devices under simulated haulageway conditions. The noticeability of reflectors compared with trip lights and fluorescent panels was evaluated from distances of up to 850 feet with light source intensities of up to 1-6 foot-candles (ft c). Reflectors tested consisted of a reflective lens in a holder secured to a frame that can be attached to a trip. Reflectors were found to be suitable for use as a trip safety device. In fact, for the conditions in many underground haulageways some reflectors would be more effective than a permissible trip light.

"In early 1988 the decision was made by Noranda Minerals Inc. to install pressure filters at the GECO mill to replace the vacuum disk filters and bunker-C fired rotary kiln dryers. Two filters were installed, one for copper concentrate and one for zinc concentrate. Completion of the project was scheduled for the third quarter of 1989. The filters were made operational in October 1989. Some work remains to be done yet on loadout conveyors for total project completion. Capital expenditures for the project have been approximately $2,700,000 to date. The paper describes the selection criteria for the filter, the installation, startup and associated problems.1. INTRODUCTIONThe filter model chosen for the project was the Verti-Press model VP-50-6(7) (Figures1 ,2 and 3) by Filtra Systems of Farmington Michigan, USA. The decision to purchase the Filtra Systems filter was based on gaining familiarity with a different, mechanically simpler pressure filter than the Larox design and to a lesser extent a necessity for repairs to the the disc filter, rotary kiln dryer system used at the GECO operation for its' copper and zinc concentrates. The fact that it is manufactured in North America was an important consideration. The same basic principles of pressure filtration as the Larox machine are used but the implementation is quite different and somewhat simplified with some interesting innovations. 2 filters were installed to allow direct and immediate comparison of the same machine on both fine and coarse materials. Copper concentrate is reground for cleaning on the flotation circuit while zinc is not. Screen analysis of composited samples of concentrates for 1988 indicated that expected copper concentrate would be approximately 66% minus 400 mesh and zinc 50% minus 400 mesh (Tables 1 & 2).The filter is composed of six horizontal chamber module layered vertically and held together in a frame by 1 O large bolts; torqued down to 4000 ft-lbs. 6 individual belts are used; each with its own drive system. The belts themselves are of a 3 piece design with a filter cloth portion, a support belt and a rubberized intermediate portion. They are held together with steel clipper lacings. A basic description (1) of the filter operation is as follows. ""The horizontal filler chamber is closed by hydraulically pressurizing seals across each end of the filter chamber to 200 psi. The feed pump then pumps slurry into the filter chamber. Suspended solids are retained on the filter belt and the filtered solution drains into a lower drip tray and flows from the filter by gravity. At the end of the filtration or feed cycle, a rubber diaphragm in the filter chamber is pressurized hydraulically to 100 psi pressure. This removes all free liquid from the filter chamber and the filter cake. After the diaphragms are retracted the filter cake is blown with compressed air to remove any residual cake moisture. The seals are then retracted and the belt is advanced to discharge the filter cakes. During the cake discharge the belts are washed with a spray header located at the drive end of the filter. The belt assemblies move one (1) complete revolution during the cake discharge cycle. The cycle automatically repeats until the filter is shut down by the operator."

The purpose of this paper is to cover in a general way the extent, geology, quality of product, working methods and trials of the coal mining industry. of New South Wales from 1946 to the present day, with particular reference to the Western field.It must be clearly understood that any opinions expressed are those of the author and not necessarily those of the Joint Coal Board.The extent of the Western coal field at the present stage of investigation may be said to be from a few miles east of Katoomha to a few miles north-west of the township of Ulan, the total distance being 150 miles.To the west of a line from the Western Highway from Lithgow through Wallerawang, PortIand, Tyldesley, Ben Bullen, Kandos and Rylstone, there are no signs of coal except for one or two outiiers in the neighbourhood of Portland. To the east of this line the coal-bearing areas extend to the seaboard approximately 80 miles to the east.GEOLOGY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COAL SEAMSThe Western coal measures belong to the Upper or Newcastle series, which have been correlated with the Sciritheru or lllawarra, and the North-western or Gunnedah measures. Being close to the margin of the coal basin the Western measures have an average thickness of only 200 ft. to 500 ft., or approximately one-half of the maximum development of the Newcastle measures. They are underlain by Upper Marine beds which in turn rest directly on Devonian rocks.

A commercial scale strong acid leaching plant was commissioned at the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, a member of the Pasminco group of companies, in February 1988. It was designed to upgrade the lead/silver residue product from 26% to 37% lead, thus improving the realised value and increasing overall zinc recovery. This in turn enables the lead smelter treating the lead residue to improve its productivity. The equipment consists of two 250m3 bricklined leach tanks and two 6.5m diameter stainless steel high rate thickeners operating with counter current washing at 95¦C and 120 g/L H2SO4. The present filtration and drying equipment is also being replaced. Two 35m2 squeeze action filter presses equipped with horizontal plates are being installed, together with ancillary drying equipment to ensure that the final product complies with the transportable moisture limit. The new filtration plant is due to be commissioned in mid-1989.

Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.
