The physical, chemical and mineralogic characteristics of zeolites allow commercially important applications. While adoption of zeolite technology is slow in the United States compared to other regions of the world, continued testing and research has shown a wide range of uses for these minerals. They are important catalysts in petroleum refining, molecular sieves able to separate gases, and chemically inert carriers of reactants. The zeolite clinoptilolite produced by St. Cloud Mining Company (clino) (SC) is used in animal hygiene and animal feed, especially concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), horticulture, water treatment, floor dry, aquariums, air and other filters, and odour control. Clino can remove cations from solution, and surface-modified zeolite (SMZ) is a sorbent for the removal of anions and neutral organics from water. Specific clino applications are: control of chemical pollution in groundwater, removal of organic compounds from oil field waters, and elimination of pathogens from sewage effluent. Combining the sorption capabilities of SMZ with chemical or biological transformations can yield complete removal of toxic materials from contaminated water. Continued development and marketing of zeolite products will be a growth market far into the future. The CAFO market for zeolites is the most significant growth area in the United States over the next few years. SMZ, currently less than 1% of St. Cloud sales, will continue to gain market penetration for many years.

This is the second in a series of articles on microcomputers and applications in the minerals industry. The first article (ME, Feb., page 129) discussed microcomputer terms and concepts. This article will discuss software for geology and mining. The third article will cover plant, administrative, and geotechnical software applications. Introduction Geology and exploration are areas where computers have a natural fit. Large volumes of data need to be tabulated, evaluated, and made into maps and reports that allow geologists and management to make a decision on a project or mine. Until recently, the programs that performed these tasks were cumbersome and not user friendly by any stretch of the imagination. Learning time to become an expert in these programs typically would be six months or more. The computers needed to run these programs are expensive mainframes. Several years ago, the use of minicomputers became popular because of their lower cost. Programs were adapted to fit these smaller machines and became friendlier. With the advent of micros, many programs. were rewritten and used the screen capability more effectively, thus providing a real advance in user interface. Programs and Price The definition of micro, mini, and mainframe is becoming blurred. For the purposes of this article, micro refers to either an eight- or 16-bit computer, costing less than $10,000 and, more typically, under $5,000. Mini refers to a 16- or 32-bit computer that typically costs more than $25,000. Mainframe refers to a 32-bit or larger computer that costs more than $250,000. There is a large gray area between micros and minis, and minis and mainframes. Technology and prices are changing so fast that the traditional definitions have become almost meaningless and price has become a better guide. With the arrival of the minicomputer, costs for hardware began to fall, but the programs have tended to remain unfriendly. In some cases, the minicomputer acted as a front end to the mainframe. Cost of both the programs and minicomputers could easily run a minimum of $70,000. A total cost of $200,000 would not have been out of line. The average geologist and company would have a great deal of difficulty justifying such a purchase. The advent of the microcomputer has changed all that. For $3,500 to $5,000, one can buy a 16-bit micro and a printer. Plotters with six pens are available for $2,000 that will produce a 280- x 430-mm (11- x17-in.) map. For several hundred dollars, software is available to act as a word processor, an economic spread sheet, or to perform ground water calculations. In fact, some programs are available for free. Some of these programs are relatively easy to learn. In addition, programs are being developed daily that are easy to use. Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are refined raw materials and not manufactured products. The composition and properties of the grains are therefore fixed by nature. Specifications and assay certificates should take this into account by eliminating unnecessary provisions which only increase the time and cost of analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe raw material from which Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are isolated is beach sand on the coast of New South Wales and Southern Queensland. The principal current operations are in an area between Sydney and Brisbane.The sands consist principally of quartz particles, but they contain from 1 per cent to 50 per cent of a mixture of heavy minerals, including zircon, rutile, ilmenite, monazite, leucoxenic grains, chrome spinel, chromite, garnets, corundum, topaz, brown spinel, olivine, epidote, clinozoisite, tourmaline, magnetite, hematite, and cassiterite. The major components are zircon (25 to 60 per cent), rutile (25 to 50 per cent), and ilmenite (5 to 50 per cent).The so-called leucoxenic grains are not a definite mineral species but an alteration product of which the major components are titanium oxides and silica in varying proportions.Primary concentration is by gravity, using spirals or various forms of pinched sluice (Pullar, 1962), the resulting concentrates being redressed on wet tables. Blasting is the most important activity in the mining industry, the world over. It is a well known fact that only part of the explosive energy gets utilized in causing the actual rock fragmentation. The rest of it gets converted into blast-induced ground vibrations and noise. Though blast vibrations cannot be totally eliminated, it is possible to minimize them by optimization of blast parameters. This paper highlights various in-house efforts put forth by the author towards site specific blast optimization and the monitoring of blast vibrations. It also deals with the prediction curves developed by regular regression analysis for the prediction of ‘blast vibrations’, ‘peak particle velocity’, ‘safe charge’ for various blasts.

Rehabilitation of mining sites helps to achieve the purpose 5(2c) of The Resource Management Act 1991 û æavoiding, remedying, or mitigating any adverse effects of activities on the environmentÆ. The environmental outcomes for recent and current mining operations on the West Coast are variable. There are some exemplary mining operations which are restoring or even improving land use and environmental factors in the region, particularly those operated by the larger mining companies. There are also examples of an exploitative mentality where the environment and land have been severely degraded by mining activities. Technology has been developed to prevent a repetition of the historical destruction of the environment through mining. Failure to rehabilitate mined land is no longer acceptable to the New Zealand public in the 1990s and damages the credibility of the mining industry. Examples of successful mine site rehabilitation to pastoral farming and to production or plantation forestry are illustrated from the alluvial gold mining industry. Planning, sequencing of operations, the utilization of sailor plant growth materials, and aftercare are key factors in successful land rehabilitation to these productive uses. There is also a recent focus on restoring indigenous forests and wetlands at both coal and gold mining sites, particularly for mines on or adjacent to the conservation estate. The results of scientific research and efforts by the industry on techniques for rehabilitating rainforest and pakihi wetland after mining are presented, particularly from the Giles Creek Dunoille Coal Mine. There is a need for further research and trials to apply and extend rehabilitation techniques to other geological and environmental situations, particularly to mines in mountainous areas and to difficult environments like the coal measures ecosystems of the plateaux above Westport.

As a part of our study of how coal mine dusts injure the lung we have studied the effects of dusts and dust-exposed pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) on the growth of lung fibroblasts (LF). Fibroblasts were cultured near confluence in low-serum medium, either alone or in the presence of dusts, dusts plus PAMs, dust leachates or superriatants of dust-exposed PAM cultures. We report here provisional conclusions, based on initial observations. Rat LF were relatively unresponsive to direct effects of dusts, showing weak stimulation in only a few cultures, and there was no evidence that dust-exposed rat PAMs had released any growth-regulatory products. In contrast, guinea pig cells were more responsive to the dusts. The pattern of responses was quite complex. Three of the dusts stimulated LF directly (with no mediation by PAMs). Two dusts were essentially inert when added directly to fibroblast cultures, either with or without PAMs, but their leachates were active: 867 leachate was inhibitory and RF leachate was stimulatory. Dust 1361, either directly in the cultures or as an aqueous leachate, was stimulatory, and it activated cocultured PAMs to stimulate LF growth; however, supernatant products of 1361-stimulated PAMs were inhibitory. Direct exposure to 1192 stimulated LF, but its leachate was inert; cocultured PAMs exposed to 1192 had weak stimulatory effects, but supernatants of 1192-exposed PAMs were mildly inhibitory. MP3-3 had effects similar to 1192, except that the cocultured, dust-exposed PAMs had no effect on growth. We conclude 1) that guinea pig lung cells are more responsive to dusts than are rat lung cells, 2) that dusts can influence growth of LF by four kinds of interaction (by direct dust-cell interaction, by release of soluble dust components into the culture medium, by activating P AMs to exert direct cell-cell interactions, and by activating P AMs to release growth regulatory products into the culture medium), 3) that each kind of interaction may be neutral, inhibitory or stimulatory, depending on the dust tested, 4) that four of the dusts tested were neutral, inhibitory or stimulatory, depending on the assay (the fifth <lust was either neutral or stimulatory), and 5) that the effects of soluble mediators (leachates or products of activated PAMs) frequently did not correspond with the direct dust-cell or PAM-fibroblast effects. These results suggest that the nature of the dust-lung interaction at the level of cells and molecules is exceedingly complex. These observations need to be confirmed and extended to determine what characteristics of the dusts determine the nature of the cellular responses, and to determine which patterns of responses are detrimental and which are beneficial in the overall health of the dust-exposed lung.

The 2004 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference contained an air of optimism and excitement that has not been seen since 1997. Many segments of the mining industry are alive and well. This is largely a reflection of improved metal prices, themselves due to the strong euro and improvements in Asian economies. Those factors offset higher oil prices, a weaker U.S. dollar and concerns about the Middle East. This report is an overview of the conference. It is supplemented by an examination of conference handouts, abstracts and a few complete papers that are on the PDAC’s Web site www.pdac.ca. Sixty PDAC 2004 abstracts are available at the same site, along with 15 complete papers in PDF format. The conference was held March 7-10 in Toronto, Ontario. It was attended by a record 9,200 delegates from 85 countries. About 8,000 people from 74 countries attended the 2003 conference.

"MillMapperTM is a new 3D laser scanning technology that has only recently been introduced into the North American mining industry. It enables mill operators to gain a much more complete understanding of the condition of their mill internals and to more accurately predict how liners will perform in the future. This paper describes the technology and techniques used to obtain data on internal mill conditions, how this data is processed into meaningful information which enables better prediction of liner life and gives examples of the reports provided by the software. Examples are given, using client sites data, on how this information is being used to reduce the costs and improve the revenue from SAG and ball mills.INTRODUCTION Scanalyse Pty Ltd developed the MillMapperTM technology in Australia over a number of years and has recently introduced it into North America with a significant take-up in Canada. The technology was commercially released in Australia in late 2006 and there has been significant technical development in the features provided since that time. MillMapperTM has been accepted as a useful technology in the Australasian region and more recently has been introduced to sites in Chile, Peru, Brazil, USA, Canada, Laos and South Africa. Over 100 different mills have been scanned and the technology has been thoroughly tested and validated. It has become an integral tool in condition monitoring and improvement programs for SAG and Ball mills across many sites and is now providing significant and measurable benefits to the mining industry. Some of these benefits will be described in this paper using actual examples."

Paper 1: Risk of gastrointestinal cancers from inhalation and ingestion of asbestos, John F. Gamble Selikoff suggested the hypothesis that asbestos exposure is causally associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in an early study of insulation workers. In this paper, John Gamble reports on his extensive review and reanalysis studies that address the relationship between asbestos exposure and GI cancers. The purpose of the review was to evaluate the association between asbestos exposure and risks of stomach, colorectal, colon, and rectal cancers separately. Gamble evaluated exposure?response (E?R) relationships using surrogate exposure methods ??because few individual studies of GI cancer have reported exposure? response analyses.?? The principal asbestos exposure surrogates are: (1) the rate ratio (RR) for lung cancer; and (2) the percent of mesothelioma among exposed workers. Analyzing SMRs for GI cancers from individual studies versus the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma provides crude estimates of E?Rs for asbestos exposure and GI cancer. Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route.The Australian Atomic Energy Commission is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and&#183; calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site.

Geological mapping on the Canadian Shield in northeastern Alberta outlined severalgranitoid rock massespotentially suitable as building stone. A particularly attractive prospect, the Chipewyan Red Granite, was subjected to an aerial survey and ground check. The petrologic and fracture characteristics critical for quarrying and use as a building stone were assessed in the course of detailed mapping at two of the most favourable sites. The extension of good rock was tested to shallow depths at one site by shallow diamond-drill coring. , The Chipewyan Red Granite displays a warm red colour, medium grain size and fairly massive texture, and takes a good polish. Deleterious geologic features studied in outcrop and subjected to structural analysis included regular joint systems, quartz veins, pegmatite dykes, basic shear zones and fault zones. Many of these key geologic features are systematic and hence predictable for stone quarrying purposes; other features, such as irregular fracelM tures, are non-systematic and arefar less predictable. The megascopic structural features studied show similar preferred orientations which appear to be collectively related to the tectonic history.

Following study of historical South African practice and a review of recent experience gained during the design, construction and testing of the high pressure plugs at the South Deep Water Barrier Project, this paper makes recommendations to improve practice. Initially, site investigation requirements are described with reference to geological, hydrogeological and seismic considerations, including site preparation and pre-grouting of the surrounding rock mass, if permeable. Structural and hydraulic aspects of plug design address topics such as residual permeability, aggressive mine water, plug materials, mortar strength and bleed. In situ thermocouples and piezometers are recommended to optimize the timing of plug tightening and monitor plug performance during service. Plug construction covers aggregate preparation, mortar quality control, plug tightening grouts, injection pressures, records and the overriding need for a method statement specification to control all aspects of plug construction. On completion of the plug, tests to establish surrounding rock stress regime, plug strength, and residual permeability are described to enable a comparison with original design assumptions. Monitoring and maintenance procedures are proposed to ensure satisfactory long-term performance of the plugs.

Asbestos first became an issue to Minnesota?s iron industry when it was revealed that mineral fibers similar to those in Reserve Mining?s tailings were being found in drinking water for several communities that used Lake Superior as their primary water source. This discovery turned what had largely been an environmental court battle into a case concerning public health. The courts listened to much conflicting and uncertain scientific testimony on the size and distribution of the mineral fibers and on the potential health effects imposed by them. In April 1974, the plant was ordered to shut down by a federal judge but the company quickly appealed the decision. The appeals court granted a stay and ultimately ruled that the plant?s closure could not be justified based on the unknown health effects of the mineral fibers since the consequences of such an action would have immediate and severe social and economic impacts. The plant was allowed to continue operation, but ordered to abate emissions to air around the plant and to switch to a land-based tailings disposal system. Much of the scientific uncertainty and public concern over mineral fibers in Minnesota?s taconite industry remain today. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. In this address I look back over the past 40 years of mineral exploration in New Zealand û essentially the period since the Second World War (ie since 1945). It was the period of my personal involvement, and indeed of the personal involvement of a number of you. Luckily it was aperiod of great interest and activity. In the previous 50 years, virtually nothing had happened, and it is kindest to draw a veil over that period. In the very important earlier 40 years (1855 - 1895) the New Zealand gold rush occurred. That must have been a fascinating, rewarding period, which has been thoroughly documented by better historians than myself. I will simply comment firstly that its mineral explorers (gold-prospectors) were very successful indeed, and found most localities of the minerals they sought, in spite of using very different methods from ours of today. Secondly, they were preceeded by one of Maori exploration, which searched for a much restricted list of minerals, but succeeded in finding virtually every locality we know of today. The explorers of both of these early periods were obviously highly successful, but, in the time available, I must restrict myself to the period since 1945. I am currently editing the effective up-dating of Gordon WilliamsÆ &apos;Economic Geology of New Zealand&apos; (1974). It covers the last 12 years or so. Many of you are contributing to that volume û both as authors and as referees û and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all. Although this new volume excludes the energy field, many of us have been involved in it, and I am therefore including energy minerals in this review, as Williams did in 1974.

"More Skill is needed to avoid rather than to handle heavy ground loads." This finding, from a tunneling engineer of the nineteenth century, is still relevant today with all advanced sequential excavation and support methods available whether they are applied in the vertical or horizontal direction. Balanced contractual agreements and documents are important since they provide the spirit and climate at the site. This article aims to describe the means and measures for &apos;hand mined&apos; shaft and tunnel support as they are available today. Some special construction elements and methods with a perspective in recent developments in order to avoid getting stuck in conservatism are presented as well. If we don&apos;t allow new methods, means and measures we may end up with the famous quote "Only women who have already proven they are able to give birth to a healthy baby are allowed to become pregnant!"

The properties of some heavy liquids which can be used in sink-float separations are discussed with major emphasis being given to the halogenated hydrocarbons. Data are presented on density, viscosity, thermal characteristics and the effects of moisture and temperature on the corrosiveness of the liquids towards various materials of construction. The toxicity of these materials, the hazards involved in handling them, and the procedures for handling them safely are also discussed. True liquids have certain advantages over colloidal suspensions for sink-float separation of minerals which makes their use especially advantageous when close separations, fine particle sizes or water-soluble minerals are to be treated. For best separating results, the medium should have an easily controlled, uniform, stable density. Here, true liquids have the advantages of allowing closer control of density and of not requiring agitation to maintain a uniform den- sity in the equipment. Low viscosities are desired in a separating liquid so that rapid separations of fine material can be made. Many liquids have lower viscosities than the colloidal suspensions at operating gravities of 1.4 to 5.0. For economic reasons and to prevent contamination of the product, the separating medium must be easily and completely removed from the ore. Normally, true liquids must be more completely removed than the cheaper suspensions and thus cause more problems in this area. The fact that the medium should not react with the minerals, air, water or the common materials of construction limits the choice of liquids which can be used, but many are available which are sufficiently stable. A more serious objection to the use of true liquids is that many of them present a toxic hazard to operating personnel and users of the product. Most true liquids are toxic to some extent, but modem knowledge of toxicity allows us to recognize the hazards inherent in handling them and enables us to design around them. Three types of true liquids are available for this use: 1) Halogenated hydrocarbons cover the gravity range from 1.2 to 3.3. They are generally more volatile and less viscous than the other liquids.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated residues from aluminum plants, to determine if carbon could be removed by flotation while recovering fluorine and aluminum compounds for recycling to the reduction process. This publication summarizes studies on samples representing three types of plant waste products, supplied by three aluminum-producing companies. Samples of flue dust, pot skimmings, and pot linings from the various plants all responded to a simple turpentine flotation scheme to reject 90 to 97 percent of the carbon. Aluminum compound recoveries ranged from 42 to 94 percent on the flue dust, were about 95 percent on the pot skimmings, and ranged from 75 to 89 percent on the pot linings. Fluorine recoveries from the same samples ranged from 35 to 63, 92 to 95, and 77 to 86 percent, respectively. The pot linings contained soluble salts of aluminum and fluorine which were recovered by precipitation with sodium aluminate and carbon dioxide gas. Composites of residues from each plant responded to flotation much the same as the individual samples. Aluminum is produced by the electrolysis of alumina in a molten cryolite bath. The electrolytic reduction cell consists of a carbon-lined box containing a pad of molten aluminum which serves as a cathode, a carbon anode, and an electrolyte of molten cryolite in which the alumina is dissolved. Alumina is reduced to aluminum at the cathode, and carbon is oxidized at the anode.

The health & safety of all workers in an underground environment is paramount to the success of our operations. The diesel emission reduction projects are key to improving such an environment. However, care must be taken to reduce the risk to personnel during such tests and prevent exposure to other hazards. VALE Inco works in a close partnership with its unionized employees, manufactures, suppliers, researchers and government officials to ensure projects are done safely and efficiently to successful completion. The Creighton Mine Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) project is an example of such a project that is currently under way to evaluate new and innovative technology that will further our search for improved environment for our workplace. This paper will discuss the issues and processes that are followed to ensure Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) field tests are conducted safely and productively.
