The massive B(bcc) — am (fcc) transformation in Cu-Zn alloys has been studied isothermally by pulse-heating the retained ß phase from room temperature to the reaction temperatures. The transformation is found to occur only in the single-phase a region of the equilibrium diagram. The massive growth rate is of the order of 1 cm per sec and is constant at each temperature, usually after a delay time of some milliseconds. The delay time depends on the reaction temperature in C-curve fashion, while the growth rate increases monotonically with temperature over the single-phase range. The absence of isothermal massive transformation in the two-phase region does not arise from slow growth rates at such temperatures, but because the reaction cannot get started there. It is proposed that the massive transjormation initiates at small preexisting a particles which have rejected zinc into the surrounding 0 matrix. Only within the single-phase region can these particles consume the excess zinc during diffusion-controlled growth and thereby accelerate to the steady-state massive growth rate. The onset of massive growth marks the end of the delay time, and the growth rate then becomes interface-controlled. These isothermal transformation characteristics explain why the usual composition range for massive-kinetic studies by quenching is so limited. The same principles can be extended to more complex alloy systems by recognizing that the single-phase region in which the massive transformation can occur may not be stable with respect to phases not participating in the reaction. MASSWE transformations are now recognized as a regular class of solid-state reactions involving no compositional change (like martensitic transformations) and no shear displacements (unlike martensitic transformations). The name was first coined by Greninger1 in 1939 to describe the coarse grains of fcc a solid solution generated via a fast reaction from the parent bcc 0 solid solution in Cu-A1 alloys. However, some 9 years earlier, phillips2 had already described a similar transformation in the Cu-Zn system. The fact that the massive a formed as a single phase during drastic quenching from the 0 region of the equilibrium diagram signified that compositional changes were precluded. and the reaction was presumed to take place as in a one-component polymorphic transition by nucleation and growth. Phillips also observed that the occurrence of the massive transformation in the Cu-Zn system was extremely sensitive to alloy composition. For example. in a Cu-37.3 at. pct Zn alloy. the ß — am (am = massive transformation product) reaction was found to predominate and was not suppressed by iced-brine quenching from the 0 region. whereas at compositions greater than 38.3 at. pct Zn the massive reaction did not appear at all. Knowledge concerning massive transformations has bee11 substantially enhanced over the years by Massalski and his coworkers; an excellent summary of his papers and the current understanding of this type of reaction has been published recently by Barrett and ~assalski." he massive transformation product grows in roughly nodular form. often with irregular boundaries but sometimes with almost planar interfaces. The latter may have simple crys-tallographic indices relative to the 0 matrix. or the indices may be complex just as in the case of mar-tensites.'1 Little is known about the existence of orientation relationships between the massive and parent phases. A striking feature of massive transformations is that the massive units start almost exclusively at grain boundaries of the parent phase and frequently propagate on a broad front across matrix grains and grain boundaries of various orientations. Because of the rapid growth rate, it is thought that the interface motion is controlled. not by long-range diffusion. but by thermally activated atom jumps across the transformation boundary.

The first paper in this series1 outlined practical methods for applying the theory of steady-state flow of an ideal Bingham plastic liquid through a circular pipe and axially through a stationary concentric annulus to the enginekring analysis of friction loss problems. In the present paper the properties of another useful rheological model, the pseudoplastic generalized Newtonian liquid, are considered. The terminology applied to the rheological models is derived from the following classification of rheological models. The term "generalized Newtonian" is a class designation applied to models which do not have yield points but which exhibit a dependence on shear rate. The term "pseudoplastic" applies to a sub-group of models within this class which exhibit a decrease in "viscosity" with increasing shear rate. The term "power model" refers to a mathematical model proposed for describing the behavior of the pseudoplastic liquid. This model is of interest since certain of the salt saturated, oil emulsion, and "low solids" drilling fluids, inverted emulsion- and oil-base drilling fluids, aqueous gels, gelled crudes and blocking agents employed in hydraulic fracturing operations are of this type. The present treatment considers the equations describing steady-state Poiseuille flow through a circular pipe and a stationary concentric annul us, and Couette flow between concentric rotating cylinders for a particular pseudoplastic model. As in the previous paper' it is demonstrated how these equations can be applied to engineering calculations of friction losses. Graphical procedures for recovering the various flow curves and cxample calculations are included. A method for simplifying turbulent-flow correlations is also proposed. PROPERTIES OF PSEUDOPLASTIC GENERALIZED NEWTONIAN LIQUID In contrast to the Bingham plastic the generalized Newtonian liquid is yield point-free. However, in the flow region the relation between stress and rate of shear is not linear as it is with ordinary Newtonian fluids. If the stress increases with shear rate at a less than linear rate the system is called pseudoplastic. While there is no yield point in this system, the Bingham advocates' coined the term pseudoplastic to distinguish this kind of behavior from Bingham plastic behavior. For the pseudoplastic a plot of flow rate vs friction loss or rpm vs torque, from pipe flow or rotational viscometer measurements, respectively, generally has three qualities: (1) it can be clearly extrapolated toward the origin; (2) there is very little slope at the origin. This accounts for the high apparent viscosities at low mixing and pumping rates; and (3) the flow curve possesses a continuous curvature which gradually diminishes as the shear increases. Rheological measurements on a pseudoplastic liquid can be easily misinterpreted as indicating Bingham plastic behavior. A typical case in point is illustrated in Fig. 1. These data were obtained from measurements on an oil-emulsion mud using a commercially available rotational-type viscometer (Model 35 Fann V-G meter). Applying the "two-point"* method3 gives a plastic viscosity of 17 cp and a yield point of 24 lb/100 ft2; at the same time weighting material settles very easily in this system. This illustrates that it is not possible to distinguish between the pseudoplastic and the Bingham plastic from only two data points. It is possible to determine qualitatively which model is more appropriate by a combination of dynamic and static measurements. Experience indicates that the simplest criterion for the Bingham plastic liquid is that the calculated dynamic yield point should be of the same magnitude as the measured gel strengths. Cordilleran metamorphic core complexes in the southwestern United States are areas where middle to late Tertiary low-angle normal faulting has uncovered rocks that were at temperatures sufficient for mylonitization during the early part of Tertiary extensional faulting. Large-displacement low-angle normal faults that separate upper-and lower-plate rocks in metamorphic core complexes are termed detachment faults. The significance of Tertiary detachment faulting in the Basin and Range Province has only become apparent in the past 6-8 years, and the association of mineral deposits with detachment faults has only been recognized in the past few years as well. Crystalline rocks below detachment faults have typically undergone chloritic alteration and brecciation over a distance of a few to a few hundred meters below the fault surface (Fig. 1). Chloritic alteration and brecciation overprinted mylonitic fabrics formed during earlier ductile shearing along the down-dip projection of detachment faults. Rocks that underwent pre-Tertiary ductile deformation and prograde metamorphism were subjected, in rapid succession, to middle to late Tertiary mylonitization, brecciation and chloritic alteration, microbrecciation immediately adjacent to the fault, and subaerial exposure. Lower-plate rocks thus experienced rapid decompression and cooling as a result of tectonic denudation and isostatic uplift (Wernicke, 1981; Davis, 1983; Davis et al., 1986).

Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. It is a great honor to be asked by the Board of Directors of this Institute to deliver the Henry Marion Howe lecture. The invitation carries with it a great responsibility, which I accept with considerable hesitation and with a feeling of unworthiness to perform the duties expected of me in this hour devoted to the memory of the life, character, and work of the late Professor Howe. Many of you recall the scholarly address delivered here a year ago by Prof. Albert Sauveur, and the beautiful tribute he paid to his friend and colleague of many years in the great work of changing the art of iron making into the science of iron. My association with Professor Howe was of brief duration—only one year—and the relation was that of pupil to teacher. My feeling toward him in later years was always that of a humble disciple at the feet of a master. He attained his third academic degree in the year that I was born. I recall the pride I felt when, after entering the steel industry, I received from him, from time to time, letters asking for information or, perchance, asking my opinion, and he was always most punctilious in acknowledging the source of such bits of information in his writings. It was also my good fortune to sit at the feet of another great teacher— Sir William Roberts-Austen, at the Royal School of Mines. I mention him because his name was used by Osmond in coining the word "aus-tenite," which is the subject of this address, and Osmond's suggestion was heartily approved by Howe. These three international metallurgists were the best of friends and delighted to honor the achievements of one another. There are other reasons for mentioning Roberts-Austen at this time. It was an introduction from Howe that opened to me the door of his laboratory as well as of his heart. It was while at Roberts-Austen's laboratory that I worked side by side with William Campbell

Minerals have been critical to human society from the earliest and their use has been intertwined with the development of civilization. In the Western World, the mining, processing and extractive metallurgy associated with ores was first described in detail by Agricola in the 16th century. He considered these collective activities to be the most necessary and the most profitable of professions, and wrote, "without doubt, none of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of the metals is not less ancient; in fact they are at least equal and coeval, for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. In truth, in all works of agriculture, as in the other arts, implements are used which are made from metals, or which could not be made without the use of metals; for this reason the metals are of the greatest necessity to man." Ours is still a materials-dependent society that relies heavily on minerals for raw materials. Today our dependence on minerals is exceptionally great. To meet the need for fuel and non-fuel minerals in a representative year, in the United States alone, about one billion tons of coal and 2.7 billion tons of ore are mined. These mineral products are essential for fertilizers, for construction materials, metals and alloys, for manufacturing household and industrial items, for transportation, and for the generation of electric power. It is instructive to consider the diversity of uses found in our society for a single mineral product - silver, for example. Experts believe that in the past 5000 years we have mined about a million tons, or 31.9 billion troy ounces of silver. In 1988, 133 million troy ounces of silver were used in the Unites States. Most of the silver used was for techno- logical, medicinal and industrial purposes, Table 1. X-ray films, for example, carry comparatively large amounts of silver to lessen patient's radiation exposure. Silver does not prevent tooth decay, but each year about two million troy ounces of silver is used for dental work in the United States. In small quantities it is used in medicine. No metal - not even copper conducts heat and electricity so efficiently as silver. Silver wires lace solar cells, and silver oxide batteries power hearing aids, calculators, submarines and satellites. Hardened with tungsten or molybdenum, miniature discs of silver pass current from wire to wire in cars, telephones and computers. A dish- washer timer alone may have 50 such electrical contacts, which open and close without excessive heat or friction. Silver is an important component of solar reflectors, since no other material reflects light so well or uniformly. In our personal lives, silver remains in high esteem to adorn our tables, provide precious objects and jewelry. In many parts of the world, silver in the form of coins, jewelry and bullion is used for financial independence and security against the vagaries of paper currency. In India, silver is used in its purest form as thin foils to decorate sweets and other edibles. It is obvious that this mineral product, silver, is of great value and utility in our society. Minerals and Environment The benefits of minerals do not come without problems. Much of the silver, for example, lies locked up in copper, lead-zinc or precious metal ores; to extract it creates vast quantities of waste material. On the average, in order to recover one ounce of silver about a quarter ton of ore must be mined. To meet the world's annual demand for silver, approximately 100 million tons of waste is generated every Year. The problem with silver is repeated with all minerals. Conversion of mineral ores into usable materials necessitates the generation of large quantities of waste products that create tremendous disposal problems. In addition to waste material discarded during mining, wastes may be generated during processing as gases, liquids or solids that must be subsequently converted into forms more acceptable for disposal. Associated with the handling, treatment and management of waste products are a number of environmental problems. Environmental problems are not new to the minerals industry. Kaolin, or china clay, is the term applied to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates. Because of its purity, light color, and refractory properties, kaolin is used extensively in the manufacture of high-grade ceramic wares and as a filler by the rubber and paper industries. Although there are numerous pottery and enamelware plants in Texas, and large rubber and paper industries; all of the kaolin used in these plants is from other States, There are two known occurrences of kaolin in Texas, namely, the Leakey deposit in Real County and the several deposits of the Medley district in southern Jeff Davis County. An investigation of the Mueller kaolin deposit in the Medley district was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Following an examination of this deposit by W. D. McMillan, engineer in charge of the Texas field office of the Bureau of Mines, a proposal was made to investigate the deposit by diamond core drilling.

This report is in partial fulfillment of Contract S0241051 awarded to COMINEC on June 27, 1974. 'Me purpose of the work under this contract is to develop a conceptual design for an automated longwall mining system. The conceptual design will serve as the basis for future design and development of an automated longwall mining system capable of sustained production in excess of 2,500 tons per shift with reduced manpower which will ultimately be demonstrated in an area where conventional longwall mining has been successful. 1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM 1.2.1 Why An Automated System The most obvious benefit of automation and remote control in a longwall mining system is the reduction of accidents consequent upon a reduced working force in the hazardous face areas. However, another important aspect of the problem is the skilled labor shortage which is being compounded by the need for vastly increased coal production. The United States coal mining industry had a working force of almost 600,000 miners in 1928 but was able to muster only 145,000 miners in 1970. The miners required to staff the additional working sections and the new mines necessary to meet our energy needs are simply not available. Only automation and remote control will permit a reduced work force with increased production by keeping the face equipment operating continuously.

Previous laboratory and field experimentation has demonstrated the effect of several variables on drilling rate.1-5 These results have been incorporated into optimization theories6-" for the purpose of reducing drilling cost. Minimum-cost drilling theories rely on a combination of historical data and empirical prediction techniques for selecting optimum bit weight and rotary speed. Past solutions have required extensive use of computing equipment because of both the complexity of the mathematical formulations and the large number of parameters involved. Field attempts to apply these computed results have frequently failed because of the uncertainty of input data requirements. Humble has developed an on-site computer system to control bit weight and rotary speed and thereby implement the concepts of minimum-cost drilling. This system can (1) perform short interval drilling rate tests for formation evaluation, (2) use the results of these tests as input information to solve minimum-cost drilling formulas, and (3) control bit weight and rotary speed in accordance with these computed solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe the computer control system and present results of initial field testing. Theoretical Considerations Minimum-cost drilling (MCD) requires a quantitative evaluation of the variables involved. Several forms of a basic mathematical model have been sug-gested.'?,' "he relationships reported here form the basis for the solution programmed in this work. Four equations are used, expressing drilling rate, bit bearing wear, bit tooth wear, and cost. A solution for minimum-cost drilling assuming constant bit weight and rotary speed over the entire bit life has been programmed for use in computing MCD schedules. This solution is subject to certain limiting assumptions such as those discussed by Graham et a1.I2: 1. Drilling cost is the summation of bit cost, rotating cost, connection cost and hoisting cost. 2. Diamond bits are excluded. 3. Bit life is limited by either bearing failure or tooth wear, or by a combination of operational factors that make it cheaper to pull an incompletely consumed bit. 4. Circulating hydraulics are adequate and do not limit drilling rate. 5. Bit weight considerations exclude hole deviation. 6. Drilling rate is a function of only bit weight, rotary speed, and degree of tooth dullness; that is, the effects of pressure, lithology, fluid properties hydraulics and drill string dynamics are ignored. We look at the empirical evidence of coal block auctions in India to understand how competitive intensity affects the bid amounts in common value auctions. The results suggest that competitive intensity measured through the number of bidders for a coal block is instrumental in determining the bidding outcomes. The presence of higher numbers of bidders in the auction leads to higher bids - every additional bidder causes the bid amount to rise by INR 142.67 per tonne of coal for auctions studied for 127 coal blocks from 2014 to 2023. The paper also examines the moderating and mediating effect of competition on bids and on excess of bids from the comparative market price of coal from alternative source of Coal India Limited. The results indicate that competitive intensity does not have statistically significant impact on the relationship between common value of coal blocks and bids, neither as a moderator nor as a mediator. The strategic behavior of the bidders has also been observed as bidders have been seen to bid in a higher than market price in order to outbid the competitors.

Fires that occur in abandoned coal mines, waste banks, and in coal outcrops constitute a serious health, safety, and environmental hazard. Toxic fumes, the deterioration of air quality, and subsidence constitute the greatest hazards from these fires. Although tires on abandoned mined land (AML) occur in every coal-producing state, the severity of the problem varies. Methods to extinguish or control AML fires, including excavation, fire barriers, and sealing, are generally expensive and have a relatively low probability of success This U.S. Bureau of Mines report includes information from a variety of sources, i.e., agencies of the Federal Government, State agencies, research reports, conference proceedings, product information, and technical literature. This information has been collated into a comprehensive discussion of AML fire problems. Data on past fire control projects and on the estimated extent of the current problem have been compiled. Factors affecting the occurrence, propagation, and extinguishment of AML fires are discussed. Conventional fire control methods are described, and their probable effectiveness is evaluated. Information on the hazards of AML fires and safety considerations is included. The status of current technology, recent improvements in fire control methods, and areas of current research are discussed.

"INTRODUCTION During the early 1920's world-wide attention was attracted to a group of oil fields (Mexia, Wortham, Currie, Richard, and Powell) later known as Mexia-Powell fault-line fields in Limestone, Freestonne, and Navarro Counties, Tex. Enormous yields of high-gravity oil from the wells in these fields resulted in drilling campaigns that quickly surpassed all previous records for rapid, intensive development of productive areas. The discovery of oil in the Mexia filed in September 1921 was followed quickly by the finding of oil in the Currie field in October. In January 1923 oil was discovered in the Powell field; in February 1924 the Richland field, midway between Currie and Powell fields, was brought in; and in November 1924 oil was discovered in the Wortham field, situated between Mexia and Currie fields. Each of the fileds was developed rapidly: wells were spaced closely and had high initial production; production peaks were reached early in the producing lives of the fields; subsequent decline was rapid, and there was early and rapid encroachment of edge water.In 1927 Bureau of Mines engineers, in their investigations a engineering conditions in oil,completed a preliminary study and published a mimeographed report 4/ on underground conditions in the Wortham field, and in 1928 they reported on production and development problems in the Powell Field. 5/ field."

There has been a substantial increase in the use of rubber-tired front-end loaders in the mining industry in recent years. Concurrent with this increased usage, in the period of 1966 to 1970, there were at least 74 mining industry fatalities involving front-end loaders, or (on the average) in excess of one fatality per month. When the usage of front-end loaders by the construction industry and other industries, organizations, and agencies, such as the Government (i.e., Department of Defense), along with the uncounted numbers of serious, but non-fatal accidents, are included in the picture, the safety record for front-end loaders, of necessity, becomes a serious subject for study. There is an urgent need for attempts to be made to eliminate or reduce the number of safety hazards; to decrease the confusing diversity of controls designs found on present front-end loaders; to improve the maintenance and operating procedures; to formulate better personnel policies; to increase management and official awareness of the extent of the problem, in both industry and the Government; etc.; in order to decrease the number of accidents. Part of the problem may be traced to the fact that the operator of a front-end loader is frequently designated a "heavy equipment operator." This implies that he is automatically qualified to operate any model, of any manufacturer's, wheeled or tracked, front-end loader as well as many other types and classes of heavy equipment. Contrary to automotive practice, the complement of primary operating and emergency controls varies widely from model to model, as well as from manufacturer to manufacturer. Not only are certain controls present on one front-end loader model and absent on others, but there are significant differences in the modes of control operation, in the functions performed by superficially similar controls, in the location of the various controls, etc.

INTRODUCTION THE use of iron powder during the post-war conversion period has been increasing with great rapidity. This is particularly true in regard to the manufacture of molded mechanical parts such as bushings, gears, cams, small wheels, and the like. Many manufacturers have found it possible to replace machined cast iron and carbon steel with molded iron powder parts, and thereby can not only effect a savings in cost, but can produce a better product as well. As the field of application for iron powder parts widens, greater demands are made upon the powder supplier concerning quality and uniformity characteristics. The following are some of the most important properties parts fabricators desire in the iron powder they use: I. The powder should have high compressibility so that good density can be obtained without the use of excessive pressures. At the same time, it should show low die wear so that a large number of pieces can be produced from the die. This means that the powder must be of high purity and good softness or plasticity. 2. The powder should produce compacts of high green strength, so that unsintered parts can be handled without breakage or fraying of the edges. 3. The sintering properties should be good so that satisfactory strength is obtained in the sintered piece. 4. Compacts made from the powder should show small but, above all, uniform dimensional changes during the sintering operation so that accurate parts can be produced, and warping and other such bad effects eliminated. 5. The powder should have satisfactory flow properties for automatic molding. 6. It is very important that the powder be uniform in sieve analysis, compressibility, flow, purity, and other qualities, from container to container in any given lot and from shipment to shipment. 7. Price-The fabricators desire all these good properties, but in many instances still do not wish to pay a premium price. There has been considerable discussion as to the importance of price of the powder in relation to the cost of the finished product. It is true that in cases where certain special properties only procured by powder metallurgy are required, price is not a criterion. On the other hand, there have been a number of applications recently made which would not be commercially practical with a powder which commands a premium in price. The powder is compressed to a density figure dependent upon the function the part is to perform, as well as upon such important considerations as press capacity and die wear. The energy and climate protection policy of European Union (EU), and its Member States adopted in 2007 bridges security of supply, environmental protection and competitiveness. The objectives of the EU energy and environmental strategy cover the foreseeable period till 2020. It assumes all sources of energy will be needed. The objectives for renewable and improved efficiency are ambitious; it must be established if they are also realistic. Coal can continue to make valuable contribution to the security of supply and low price of electricity, only with technologies allowing for drastic reduction of the CO2 emitted of its combustion. The aimed at -20% reduction of green-house gases (GHG) of EU-27 by 2020 is an objective limited in time and content. Europe produces less than 15% of global CO2 and this will be reduced to 10% in 2030. Emissions Trading (ET) is to remain the central instrument for CO2 management, especially in the power sector. ET scheme (ETS) or other mechanisms need designing to create an incentive for investment in higher efficiency and technologies and to Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS). The ETS as the climate protection instrument of the EU can become a heavy burden (high fuel and electricity prices, less security of supply) or it can create a climate for modernization of fossil fuel power plants. The suggestion in this paper of fuel-specific benchmark system for CO2 allocation after 2012 can combine the emission levels to be reached with a strong drive to invest, the necessary investment security, transparency and the principle of proportionality. A Benchmark System as recommended by coal industry could adapt to the different circumstances in the long term and comply with EU energy and environmental policy objectives.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to determine the feasibility of water diversion and overburden dewatering for underground coal mines in the Appalachian Region. All relevant published literature pertaining to the occurrence and control of surface and groundwater in underground coal mines was reviewed and organized into a bibliography. The impacts of mine water with respect to health and safety, production, environment, and costs were assessed. Sources of water inflow into underground mines were described. A summary description and evaluation of techniques that can be used to reduce the amount of water entering underground coal mines was prepared. A review of engineering practices currently used by operating coal mines in the Appalachian region to prevent the movement of ground and surface water into active coal workings was conducted. Major emphasis was placed on the identification of the geologic and hydrologic con¬dition of the site, onsite inspection of the methods used and an evaluation of their technical and cost effectiveness.

The microstructure of explosion-bonded pairs of similar and dissimilar metals has been investigated by electron microscopy. A review of the specific problems encountered and the methods used for obtaining surface replicas and thin-film transmission specimens of the bond interface is given. The bond area is mainly characterized by continuous and practically diffusionless metallurgical bonding. The very large shear stresses induced along the collision front of the plates being joined causes extreme grain elongation and a symmetrical pattern of subgrains in the bonding direction. The bond zone is also characterized by a very high density of dislocations and pressure-induced twins. Localized heating occurring during the cladding process can result in partial re-crystallization or the formation of thin layers of molten material. The force of precisely controlled explosions causing a high-velocity impact between metal plates has been used for several years to achieve metallurgical bonding between an extremely wide variety of metals. This method essentially consists of accelerating a plate to high velocity toward a stationary plate by a detonating explosive. Since the restrictions to bonding are not those encountered with conventional nethods, it becomes possible to bond pairs of metals having widely different mechanical properties that are immiscible or form brittle intermetallic compounds. Many applications of such composite metals are found in the field of corrosion protection as well as numerous other fields; for example, explosion bonding is being applied for fabricating the materials used by the United States Mint in the new sandwich-type coins. The primary condition for establishing a metallurgical bond is that absolutely clean metal surfaces be brought together. Any metal exposed to the atmosphere is covered with oxides, adsorbed gases, and other contaminants; even a very forceful impact of two such surfaces is not sufficient for bonding. Cowan and Holtz-man,"' who reviewed the dynamics of colliding plates in detail, showed that in order to achieve a good bond the explosion conditions must be chosen in such a way that the plate collision velocity is less than the sonic velocity, in which case no oblique shock waves are attached to the collision front. A pressure wave is then generated ahead of the collision line, and the material forming the colliding surface of each of the plates flows forward and is ejected in the form of a spray, the so-called jet. The dynamic elastic limit of the metals must be exceeded so that there is sufficient plastic deformation. At the point where the jet formed by the junction of the inner surface layers of both plates separates from the combined plates, the material experi- ences a very high shearing strain and the pressure can reach several hundred kilobars. This process strongly influences the microstructure of the bond zone as will be seen later. Behind the collision front, uncontami-nated layers of internal material are brought together under high pressure and are thus metallurgically bonded. I) STRUCTURE OF EXPLOSION BONDS The different types of explosion bonds that can be obtained depend on the explosion conditions, and have been investigated by Cowan and Holtzman,1'2 Holtzman,3 Klein; Bahrani and crossland,' and Buck and Horn-bogen. The preferred kind for practical applications is the so-called wavy bond, typical examples of which are given in Fig. 1 showing light micrographs of various metal-to-metal interfaces. In forming this type-- of bond the collision energy is mainly expended in jetting, the formation of waves, and localized melting. Beyond the crest of the waves, eddy-shaped areas are observed in which the two metals are mixed in a complex pattern of streaks. Cowan and Holtzmanl first proposed that this wavy pattern is analogous to periodic eddy shedding in the flow of a viscous fluid around an obstacle (Von Karman's eddy street). The mass of metal ahead of the stagnation point, which is associated with the jet and has forward momentum, plays the role of an obstacle and the eddies created in the flow of solid metal around the stagnation point are preserved in the final clad specimen. This idea has been reviewed more recently by Klein4 and the variables involved in the wave formation have been discussed in some detail by Bahrani and crosslands and Buck and Hornbogen.6 Several studies of the structure of explosion bonds by light metallography have already been published.1-6 Aside from the waviness and the eddies which were mentioned above, the most striking characteristic of the area in the vicinity of the bond interface is a very considerable longitudinal grain deformation which appears to be strongest at the metal-to-metal boundary and dies out as one moves away from it. Large twins are often observed within the deformed grains, and molten areas are found in the center of the eddy-shaped structures situated beyond the crest of the waves. The large hydrostatic pressures and shear stresses occurring at the interface modify the mechanical and chemical properties of the bond zone. Increases in hardness in this area have been reported by various authors.396 The defects along the interface can also cause a local increase of the chemical reactivity and thus might be expected to boost the etching rate. However, the effects of this preferential etching cannot be observed by light microscopy due to its inherently limited resolution power. The same limitation precludes the observation of morphological features directly along the bond interface as well as the interface itself. Furthermore, no information can be gained by light-
